Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Meet East Grinstead Living’s
Agony Aunt
Suzy Greaves, 41, local author, met Sylvia Brady, 91 and by strange coincidence s Suzy Greave discovered that they lived in the same house, an old brickmaker’s cottage in East Grinstead - 70 years apart.
“It was such a coincidence,” said Suzy. “I invited Sylvia round for tea. She regaled me with tales from the war when her husband Sylvia Brady had taken down the black out blind and watched a bomb sail over the house. It gave her such a shock, her waters broke. She was only 24, and giving birth to her first child as Dear Sylvia, the bombs fell around her. She’s an amazing I am eager to hear any advice about woman!” being a mother from someone who has “Sylvia was feisty, witty and wise and “seen it all”. My mum always tells me sitting beside the original Aga that she she regrets working as much as she did remembered from way back, I felt we were when we were young, but it seems so strangely connected by the bricks and unavoidable these days. What tips would mortar of my little cottage that we had both you give mums of today? lived in. As Sylvia talked about bombs, food shortages, death and love, I wanted her to stay and chat forever.” Sylvia says: Author of The Big Peace (Hay House, £8.99), Suzy has spent the last few years researching the latest scientific findings on what makes people feel happy and at peace. “But as I listened to Sylvia, I realised she had lived that journey. She didn’t need science to tell her how to be happy or self help techniques to tell her how to be happy, she just was!” (Sylvia and Suzy’s story was featured in The Daily Mail on the 10th January 2010 www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1345653/ Want-secret-serenity-Just-ask-granny.html)
“I’ve worked most of my life and worked at Martells in East Grinstead right up to being 76 so don’t feel bad for working and having kids. Working is great because it gives you a sense of purpose and keeps you young! But just try to enjoy your kids more. When you are with them, be with them. Get them to switch off the television and their computer games and just talk together, play board games, interact, go on your bikes together. Nowadays, everyone seems to just stare at screens. Switch the screens off and talk!”
East Grinstead Living have invited Sylvia to be agony aunt. Every month she will be answering reader’s questions, here is one we Send in your own “Dear Sylvia”, email: info@egliving. co.uk or write to: Dear Sylvia, 33 Morton Road, East started her off with (from our very own East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 4AF. David Shepherd Interview
David gets a little bit frustrated for only being known as “the chap who has a print on the wall of Only Fools and Horses” (the much-loved iconic British sitcom). “When that programme started the BBC bought a print of mine called, Wise Old Elephant for the set. I’d sold the copyright years ago for £100.” Had he not sold the copyright it would have been a massive earner for him… “I have to tell people: ‘I do paint other things as well’”. I was fascinated to find out where his love of art all
started. He admits to being useless at school. But as one of the legendary headmasters of Stowe, which he attended as a boy, told him: “It’s not what you know, it’s what you are”. Growing up in the 1930s he had one ambition in life which was to be a game warden in Africa. “I’d never been abroad in my life, I had this arrogant idea I was god’s gift to the Kenyan National Park.” He flew out there only to be royally rejected. “I came home at 21, my world in ruins. Having failed to be a game warden I had two choices to become a bus driver or artist. I decided to go to Slade School of Fine Art and they slung me out there too”.
© Becky Thomas
As promised, we continue our interview from last month of Hammerwood resident and world-renowned wildlife artist, David Shepherd. (For the first part of the interview visit our website to view the back issue online).
He was getting worried by this time. By sheer chance, fate or what have you David went to a cocktail party in Winchester (“I hate cocktail parties”, he said, “but I’m glad I went to this one”). There he met Robin Goodwin, a well-established professional artist who said, “I’m not going to teach you David, I don’t teach anybody. But bring me some of your work tomorrow, I’ll take a look”. The next day he was so horrified at David’s work he told him, “Anybody who paints as badly as that,

I’ve just got to teach”. In a true Henry-Higgins style project Robin Goodwin took on the teaching of David as a challenge. “He was brutal and taught me not only to be an artist but a business man”. Setting his work ethic out to David he told him, “you have to be up early on a Sunday morning, when it’s pitch black, even when it’s cold and raining, working ”. Which is exactly what David does to this day, “I’ve little choice…with commissions to fulfil up to 18 months ahead!” Entering the realm somewhat of ideologies David told me that he “can’t stand” the class system, that there’s still shreds of it around in the “stock-broker belt”. “Some of the finest friends I know are engine drivers I’ve met over the years. There are people ‘taking the train to Waterloo’, who wouldn’t dream of talking to people like that. It’s all wrong.” I asked him about the rumoured German bomb buried in Hammerwood.
As a child during World War II David grew up in North London, “we had all our windows blown out by the Germans”. The children had great excitement at seeing Spitfires & Hurricanes, not really realising, of course, that people were dying. “We used to swap bits of crashed aeroplanes at school”. “I’m passionately interested in archaeological digs and it’s a fact that a German aircraft blew up over Hammerwood and left it’s trail of wreckage all the way along. And I’ve done a bit of research, it crashed opposite the church. Through one person and then another I got to know this chap who’s now in his 80s, he showed me exactly where it is. There’s a professional archaeologist who’s possibly interested in digging it up”. With allegedly 2 unexploded bombs still on board, excavation would not be for the faint-hearted! We spoke again about conservation, “We are making such a mess of it (the
Self Portrait of David in his twenties
world).” David goes to schools for talks and asks children, “what’s the most dangerous animal in the world?” man being the answer. He believes conservation should be taught as a curriculum subject because it’s our future. “Children born today, when they are in their 80s, whatever is this planet going to be like?…” He admitted to almost being glad he won’t be around. I can tell that education is a huge part of the David Shepherd Foundation’s philosophy. David summarised, “I have a great debt of gratitude to wildlife so I must pay it back through my foundation. It’s wonderfully exciting to be able to put something back”.

Gardening Tips for April Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Vegetables
Vegetable planting should now be well under way if ground conditions permit. Sow summer cabbage and Brussel sprouts. Sweet corn can be sown in pots or cells for planting out late May. Second early potatoes can be planted at the start of the month and maincrop ones at the end of the month. Many vegetable crops can be sown as seed this month – check the instructions on the packet. Broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach are just a few ideas. Plant shallots, garlic and onion sets as well as asparagus crowns in friable well-drained soil.
Shrubs and Flowers
After a wet spell mulch around camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas to help conserve moisture to ensure good flowering next year. Tie in new shoots on clematis, jasmine and climbing and rambling roses. Rose shoots should be kept as level as possible to promote growth of side shoots . Sow sweet pea seeds outside or plant out those you have grown over winter. Put the climbing structure, either a wigwam of frame with netting, in place. Put two seeds or plants to each cane. If you have a light soil you can start making sowings of hardy annuals. Sow into straight seed drills as this makes it easier to take out any weeds that will grow. Once the flowers are in bloom you will not be able to see the rows. Put in supports for perennials to grow through before they become too large. Use frames sold for this purpose and once the plants mature they will be hidden by the foliage. The more tender plants that had their stems left on to protect the crowns such as fuchsias and penstemons can now be pruned taking care not to cut out any new growth. Keep dead heading daffodils and tulips taking off only the flower and seed head.
Fruit
Plant strawberry plants in planters or hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop this summer. Protect fruit trees and gooseberries with netting. The blossom of peach, nectarine and apricot trees should be protected from frost with a cover of fleece. Remove it in the daytime to allow insects to pollinate.
Bulbs
Protect new spring shoots from frosts and slugs.... Split clumps of fertiliser on beds and borders and erect supports for herbaceous plants such as peonies, delphiniums and oriental poppies that would otherwise flop. Carry on lifting and dividing overgrown clumps of perennials and split polyanthus plants once they have finished flowering. Sprinkle general purpose and unsprouted dahlia tubers Sow sweet peas outdoors (soak the seeds overnight to improve germination) and plant out those raised under cover.

THE COMPUTER STUDIO in Railway Approach, East Grinstead opened their doors just over 2 years ago just as the recession was announced! MADNESS you might say. However, as director Andy Tippett explained, “Having created a successful formula in our high street store in Crowborough over the previous 5 years, we knew that if we replicated that model in East Grinstead there should be no reason why it wouldn’t succeed.” “It’s fairly straightforward,” he continued, “provide value by offering great products at prices which compete with the large PC outlets, many of whom attract customers in with loss leaders which hide many items being more expensive generally. The important thing is, supplement this with what they don’t offer - personal and qualified service from knowledgeable and helpful staff, which is perhaps why in a March 2011 investigation by ‘Which’, the consumer magazine, those large PC outlets faired so badly in their abilities and quality of PC repairs” “In time of economic downturn service becomes even more important when dealing with technology. knowledge and advice as they are not computer experts themselves. Also, when money is tight buying new equipment is not always an option, if you offer a good repair and maintenance service this is not only good for your customers but makes for good business.” Over the last 2 years The Computer Studio in East Grinstead has continued to see growth. “We are extremely pleased with the way things are going and we now have a good, established customer-base of individuals and local businesses,” says Tippett. “I think many local businesses are surprised when they realise just how competitive we are. Only recently we have supplied multi-user licences of Microsoft Office to one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of vending consumables.”
The Computer Studio are an AcerConnect Partner, Epson Express Service Centre and HP, Toshiba and Netgear retail partners, as well as a Microsoft Solution Partner. As a result they can offer a full range of specialist products in addition to standard stock lines. Their

Music & Arts Festival Janet Gillbard
East Grinstead is extremely lucky to be able to boost it’s very own Music & Arts Festival. Now in it’s 43rd year! It was formed to encourage and promote the performing arts for all age groups, especially for the young.
Janet Gillbard, festival secretary, gives us some background to this now well-known and loved annual event.
The Festival movement was established in the 1870’s at a time of major educational developments and by 1904 some 60 festivals had been formed. A Federation of Festivals was established in 1920 which has since developed into the British and International Federation of Festivals with over 300 affiliated festivals in the UK alone.
desire to help the community. The reward is to be part of the event and to work with others committed to the same goals ( for the young ones out there: it also looks great on your CV!) This year’s Festival will be held at Chequer Mead on the following dates. All classes start at 9.30 am. April 2nd &3rd Singing April 30th, May 1st. 7th & 14th Dancing May 7th Speech & Drama Anyone is welcome to come and watch any of the classes. There is an entry fee, payable on the door. More detailed information can be found on our website www.egmaf.org.uk from where, when it is available in autumn, you will be able to download a syllabus and entry form for next year’s festival, so start preparing early!
It was decided in November 1966 that a Competitive Music and Arts Festival should be held in East Grinstead and the first Festival took place in June and July 1968 incorporating classes in Piano, Choral, Instrumental, Drama and Dancing. For many years different school premises around the town were used for each section. Entries grew and other sections were introduced, such as One-Act-Plays, Brass, Organ, Arts and Crafts and Photography. An end of festival concert was held each year. The Festival moved to Chequer Mead Community Arts Centre after it was opened in 1997 enabling the whole Festival to be held in one location. This year there are classes for Dancing, Singing and Speech & Drama. The Town Mayor becomes the Festival’s President during his/her year of office. We are always looking for more helpers. The Festival work is purely voluntary. The qualifications are a love of the Arts and a

H.E.L.P Centre The H.E.L.P. Centre opened its doors in Railway Approach in 2001. Some children, fall behind in their reading and writing skills, which are necessary for success in all other subjects, and some parents cannot afford to pay for additional tuition. This is where the H.E.L.P. Centre can live up to its name! We provide tutors who can work with children one-on-one to help them catch up and make learning fun. We use a very successful phonics system, so that even children who have had prior difficulties in reading and spelling can become good readers and spellers. It is never too late to learn and it can change an otherwise disadvantaged life! Here’s what a parent of one of the children said recently:
“I am writing to express my appreciation for all the help you have given my son.
When Sam first started at the H.E.L.P. Centre he was struggling to read and write and therefore was unable to fully participate in his school lessons. He was falling further and further behind his classmates. His tutors at the H.E.L.P. Centre took him back to basics and helped him to learn the alphabet properly. With all the time and effort they have spent with Sam during the time he has been there, he is now able to read, write and enjoy school. I seriously wonder how Sam would be coping with school if he had not had the help he has received. Many thanks to all your tutors for all the help you have given Sam.” We welcome anyone who would like to train, free of charge, to be a tutor at the Centre and to volunteer THEIR help. Effective Education The Effective Education Centre is located in the heart of East Grinstead on Railway Approach, close to the train station. We are an established tutoring and learning centre. We provide tutoring in subjects such as Maths, English, Science, History, Geography and Foreign Languages (Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portegese), and we prepare students for SATs, 11 + Common Entrance, GCSE and A-Level exams. We also run throughout Half term, Easter and Summer Holidays, various Clubs such as Creative Writing, Times Tables, Handwriting and Science Clubs. Our tutors are qualified, friendly and patient and are ready to help any student. Our purpose is to help the students develop their confidence and good study habits so that they understand and put what they learn into application. Here is what some our parents and students have to say:
“My daughter Jemma came to do the Creative Writing Club and Times Table Club here at the Centre. She loved the classes and was always enthusiastic to come. She was so happy when she realised she knew all the tables. She started writing a book and poetry and is very good at it after having come to the Centre… “Her school report mentioned how all of a sudden she started to do better and better in maths and literacy. I know that her coming to the Centre has a great deal to do with this and the help she received from her tutor was invaluable. Help from the Centre together with Jemma’s determination to improve was the right combination. “Thank you very much for your care and attention. Your are lovely people and Jemma starts Secondary school with a lot more confidence and knowledge thanks to you!” Parent April 2011 • East Grinstead Living

From PR to
Pirates...
NOT many authors are inspired by watching paint dry but for East Grinstead-based journalist Geraldine Durrant it was the start of a new career. “I’d taken a month off work for a house renovation project three years ago when I heard about a BBC story competition to promote literacy and encourage parents to read with their children, and as I painted I had the idea for what became my first book. “I had always teased my granddaughters, Alice and Ellie, that I used to be a pirate, and it struck me that a funny, feisty Pirate Gran would make a good heroine.” The BBC agreed, and after a TV interview about her quirky winning tale Geraldine was commissioned by the National Maritime in Greenwich to write a longer version of the story for publication. “I was very, very lucky - it was a real case of being in the right place, at the right
time: and I was particularly pleased to work with the Maritime Museum because I had spent seven years at school in Greenwich and knew it well.” ‘Pirate Gran’ was published simultaneously in England and Australia two years ago, and has since been translated into Spanish and Catalan. It isn’t just children who have enjoyed the antics of mischievous Gran and the faithful crocodile who lives underneath her bed. “I think a lot of mums and dads get a bit fed up with endless stories about dinosaurs and glittery princesses. Artist Rose Forshall’s illustrations of Gran are beautiful and very funny, and include some jokes for grown-ups because parents who end up reading the same book a dozen times want something to make them smile too.” And after a career in journalism Geraldine has enjoyed discovering the world of publishing. “I’ve interviewed very many well-known authors including Ken Follett, Julian Fellowes, Salman Rushdie and P L Travers, who created Mary Poppins. “I’ve even interviewed the real Christopher Robin (Milne). But I never imagined

becoming an author myself”. Geraldine’s cheeky heroine is now back and up to her old tricks in a newly-published sequel - ‘Pirate Gran Goes for Gold’ - the highly topical tale of Gran’s pursuit of Olympic excellence. Geraldine’s third book, ‘Twinbane - An Appalling True History’, was published last summer. A fast-paced and funny pageturner for over-eights.
writing it, so I am both surprised by Gran’s success and very grateful. “On the other hand,” Geraldine admitted, “I still find it sightly odd to find myself on ‘the wrong side’ of an interview. As a publication that supports local community & businesses we were interested to know Geraldine thoughts about East Grinstead.
“I wrote Twinbane for a serialised Daily Telegraph competition and although it is aimed at children, I had a hugely enthusiastic response to it from adult readers too.
“I have lived in East Grinstead for 27 years now and people who know me from my past work on both the local newspapers, or more recently as the Town Council’s communications officer, have been very kind and very supportive - which is what life in a close-knit town is all about.”
“One octogenarian even wrote begging me to tell him the ending because at his age he didn’t know how long he’d got and he didn’t want to die without knowing the end!”
Pirate Gran Goes for Gold, published by the National Maritime Museum, will be out in paperback in May. Geraldine’s books are all available on Amazon or through local bookshops.
So how has life changed since her career took a new path? “Most journalists think they have a book in them but most of us never get round to

Michael hires and sells fitness equipment for use in the home. He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and fitness studios. His customers appreciate the quality of the machines and the speedy and flexible delivery times. Hire Fitness also provides a hire-to-buy scheme, where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. So when they buy a machine they know they’re going to get a personalised back up service with a comprehensive warranty. People hire in their own home for many different reasons, but often because of the convenience factor, lack of time or inclination to visit a gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst exercising at home. Perfect for busy mothers who want to get back into shape, but do not have enough hours in the day. Also at this time of the year many people are starting to think about how they are going to get fit and look good in their summer outfits and swimwear!
At Hire Fitness the equipment range includes Vibration Plates, Treadmills, Cross Trainers, Bikes and Rowers. All models are robust, good-looking, high quality with excellent computer functions and easily portable. The equipment ticks all boxes! The Ultim8 Pro Plate is the fastest growing model. Ultim8 Pro Plate – After 16 weeks use of the Pro Plate I felt in much better shape with noticeable improvement in the toning of my tummy, bottom and legs. I have not felt so good for as long as I can remember. Thank you so much!
