“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Dear Residents, Whats inside this month Welcome to the April issue!
Spring is here at last and with that, warmer days ahead. Last month there was a fantastic response to the Ashdown Forest article, asking for help to support the forest after funding cuts. The rangers wanted to thank readers (see their feature) and we would like to echo their thanks. This month is a bit of a 'local sports' special with a feature about the history of the famous Sunshine 7s Rugby Club weekend which will take place at the end of April and EG Town Football Club's special day last month with Harry Redknapp, plus a potted history of their club to boot! We also have a fascinating interiors feature, with the latest trends to create that perfect ambiance in your home. We hope you can find the local tradesmen you need to help you out with your home and garden goals this spring.

Rich Dark Chocolate Tart Serves 6 By Alex Floyd, Pastry Chef, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club
Ingredients: Pastry: • 125g unsalted butter • 50g caster sugar • 200g plain flour • 1 egg Filling: • 200g 50% cocoa dark chocolate • 250ml double cream • 75g butter
Pastry Method 1. Beat together the butter and caster sugar then add the flour and rub between your fingers to create a breadcrumb-like consistency. 2. Stir in the beaten egg to bind the mixture then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 3. Roll out the pastry to approximately 2mm thick and use to line a 8” round tin. Place a piece of greaseproof paper over the top of this, and use either baking beans or dry rice to fill the tin. 4. Bake for 30 minutes at 180ºC. Remove the baking beans and paper then brush the inside of the tart with a little beaten egg, then return to the oven for 5 more minutes before cooling.
Chocolate Filling Method 1. Heat the double cream in a saucepan and bring to the boil. 2. Add the chopped chocolate and butter to a heatproof bowl, then pour the cream over the top. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and everything is combined. 3. Pour into the pastry case and allow to cool to room temperature, then serve with your choice of accompaniments – we use a salted caramel
sauce, raspberry gel, meringue shards and chocolate crumb, but fresh raspberries and vanilla ice cream are just as good!

Ikigai is the new Hygge!* At Sofas & Stuff, we have been looking at the new Interior Design trends for 2019 and this is one we are really embracing.
The word Ikigai comes from Japan and loosely translates as ‘finding a feeling of purpose and wellbeing’. Within interiors this means using tactile fabrics such as wools, velvets and linens, and an earthy colour palette in lots of tones or teamed with inky blues. We recently visited Chelsea Harbour to see all the new collections and it was Romo Fabrics who told us all about Ikigai. They have put together this fabulous mood board to illustrate the trend perfectly.
Hambledon corner sofa with Indigo & Wills handblocked linen cushions. Port Isaac Chair in sumptuous Tango Lunar velvet
The emphasis this year is also on sustainable and recyclable fabrics so artisanal, handmade elements are very popular. There is another Japanese phrase associated with Ikigai which is Wabi Sabi, this roughly translates as ‘appreciating the beauty in imperfection’. So, we can celebrate the natural imperfections in fabrics such as hand-woven Harris Tweeds or painstakingly hand-blocked Indian prints. Or the textures of Sisal or Kilim rugs on wooden floors.

green velvet, linen union or a botanical print. These all help bring a feeling of the outside freshness into your home. The final trend we’d like to share with you is the New England nautical look. This timeless style brings and uncomplicated colour scheme using a sea of textured cool blue coastal tones to natural linens in sunbleached hues to create a breath of fresh air and seaside ambiance. They can work in any home from a quaint cottage to a modern beachside apartment - red and blue stripe fabric designs can create depth and height in any space. We have some great examples of this new trend at Sofas & Stuff in Eridge so why not pop in for a cup of Jasmine Tea and a chat! Call: 01892 572309. Another trend this season is for ‘greening’ interiors by filling your space with house plants seems to be affecting fabric choice too, with green fabrics on the up, whether it be

A Little Sunshine Sevens History
From humble beginnings way back on a Sunday in 1958, the tournament has progressively grown into a major event in the rugby calendar, so we are rightly proud to be celebrating the 62nd time here at East Grinstead Rugby Football Club. Led by the incomparable, the late Steve Cairns, the initial tournament happened when a group of eight teams came together to have a day of sevens rugby whilst at the same time raising money for the local RNIB’s “Sunshine Home for Blind and/or Deaf Children” which was located on the south side of East Grinstead and only a stone’s throw from the club. They competed for the Lady Irene Astor of Hever Rose Bowl which was donated and presented on the day by Lady Irene herself.
From that first tournament the Sunshine Sevens has grown year-on-year as teams have come to recognise it as a top-quality event, played in a friendly and competitive (but charitable) atmosphere. It has attracted teams from all over the country (and Wales!)….
and even a Dutch touring side with nothing to do on a Sunday! Over these eventful years, the tournament, with the considerable generous support from its sponsors, supporters and spectators (of all ages), has helped to raise in excess of £275,000. It is to be hoped that on the conclusion of the 62nd tournament alongside a very successful ‘Golf Day’ held in the summer, that figure will be seriously improved to enable us to continue to support local charitable causes. This year’s event will again be sponsored by Blue Cube Security, and the charities include local Step-by-Step

A LITTLE SUNSHINE SEVENS HISTORY CONTINUED
School, a small local independent day school for pupils with autism, Special Families East Grinstead, a support group for families with disabled children and Wooden Spoon, a charity that changes children’s lives through the power of rugby. In 2018, the tournament also raised money to help a little boy called Henry Maxwell, aged 6, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, and who needed a new lightweight wheelchair. The wheelchair has given Henry independence and the freedom to be able to wheel himself around his home and the playground at school with his friends. Special thanks to local EG business, Penny Farthing Jewellers, who has generously donated an amazing raffle prize to be auctioned on the day and Mansell McTaggart who will be providing the Estate Agent boards advertising the event for us this year. Thanks again for your support
and in the words of Lady Cairns, “Help us to Help the Kids” A Sunshine Weekend for All! Friday 26 April 2019: EGRFC will be hosting the thirteenth Primary School Tag involving most of the local primary schools who will enter teams of year 5 and 6 pupils. This continues the tradition of involving all ages of rugby players in the Sunshine Sevens events. We must thank Steve Hill the Schools Sports Coordinator who has for the thirteenth time organised the participation of the primary schools and provision of senior school pupils to help run the
event. The event has proved an invaluable link between the rugby club and all primary school and secondary schools within the town. In addition to over 200 enthusiastic players the club welcomes the many parents and friends who come along to give vocal touchline support and enjoy the club’s facilities. Saturday 27 April 2019 EGRFC will host two Sussex Cup Finals - the Sussex Bob Rogers Cup Final and the Sussex Trophy Final. Sunday 28 April 2019 Blue Cube Security Sunshine Sevens Tournament.

Romance in the Air
Last month, East Grinstead resident & romance author, Liz Fielding, received the 2019 ‘Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the Chair of Romantic Novelists' Association. Liz’s first book was published in 1992 and her latest was published in February. The Romantic Novelists' Awards took place at the prestigious Gladstone Library in Whitehall and author Alison Weir presented the prizes. Liz started writing when her children were small, short stories and picture stories for Twinkle and Listen With Mother. Her first romance, An Image of You, published in 1992, was set in Tsavo West in Kenya, where she and her husband had spent many happy weekends on safari. The novel was plucked from
the slush pile by Pamela Mann from Mills & Boon because the feisty heroine made her laugh. Emotion touched with humour has been the hallmark of Liz's work ever since, leading to over 15 million sales worldwide. The Harlequin/Mills & Boon brand has seen her published in over 30 overseas markets and 27 different languages. Liz has had a phenomenal eight nominations for the RITA (Romance Writers of America) awards, winning twice, first with The Best Man and the Bridesmaid in 2001 (Best Traditional Romance)
and then with The Marriage Miracle in 2006 (Best Short Contemporary Romance). Liz recently moved to East Grinstead to live near her daughter and family. She belongs to the Bookclub run by The Bookshop, has joined the Kingscote WI and is generally enjoying living in this beautiful area, which she says, ‘has so many things going on’.

L O C AL H I S T O RY N O T E S
“LET US AWAKE” by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum It’s been 100 years since the very first woman, Lady Astor, was elected to parliament in 1919; it seems fitting that a tribute is paid to our local suffragist, Dame Margery Corbett Ashby, who stood several times for East Grinstead, but was never elected. Her contribution to the rights of women is, nevertheless, vital. This article ties in with a temporary exhibition at the museum, until June, focusing on the role of suffragettes and suffragists within the East Grinstead area. Margery Irene Corbett was born on May 15th 1882 in Danehill. Her parents, Charles and Marie Corbett, were both strong Liberals and supporters of women’s rights. They often travelled to East Grinstead (then the most important town of the constituency of the same name) where they made speeches on the subject. East Grinstead was then a staunchly Conservative town and their audiences were frequently hostile. Margery was to say later in her life, “my parents, as Liberals, were at that period, as hated and distrusted by the gentry as communists are today.” Coming from this background, it is unsurprising that Margery and her
younger sister, Cicely, also became involved. Together with friends they formed the Young Suffragists. Suffragists were less aggressive, but equally determined to enfranchise women as the more militant Suffragettes, who made more headlines. Educated at home, Margery was accepted for Newnham College, Cambridge, where she joined the National Union of Women Suffrage Societies. After leaving university she took a place at a teacher training college but never taught, as her time was increasingly taken up by the suffrage movement. She became secretary of many groups and societies with this aim. She married Brian Ashby in 1910. He was a barrister and was a great supporter of her work. The next year she and Cicely formed the East Grinstead branch of the
Suffrage Society. A survey in the same year showed that less than 20% of the women in the town supported votes for women! At a public meeting in the Queens Hall in July 1922, the Countess de la Warr was elected president of the society and Margery and her sister, now Cicely Corbett Fisher, were on the committee. The common desire of these siblings to retain their own identity through the continued use of their maiden names, (albeit, in conjunction with their husband’s surnames) was unusual at this period. At the general election of 1906, Charles Corbett won an unexpected victory over the Conservative candidate. It was what we now would think of as a one-issue campaign, though Corbett would no doubt have thought his liberal views were now being espoused

LET US AWAKE CONTINUED
by the voters of East Grinstead - all male, of course. The truth was that there was universal disquiet with the Education Act of 1902 which made the teaching of the Anglican religion mandatory in all schools, not just those run by the Church of England. This was very unpopular in East Grinstead, which had a strong non-conformist tradition. Corbett promised it would be repealed if the Liberals formed the government. It is the only occasion when the constituency of East Grinstead had not returned a Conservative Member to Westminster. Once there, Charles Corbett spoke strongly for women’s rights. In 1913 he, together with the Reverend G. Riddell and the Reverend R. Strong, formed the East Grinstead branch of the Men’s League for Women’s Rights. This was disbanded at the start of the war. In 1914 Margery’s only child, a son, Michael George Ashby, was born. Co-inciding with the outbreak of World War I, Margery’s energies were temporarily concentrated on her child and the war effort. She worked in hospitals as a volunteer, for the four years of its duration. The end of the war saw the Qualification of Women Act, which gave women over thirty the right to vote. This was a step in the right direction and led to the election in 1919, of the first woman to the Houses of Parliament, Lady Astor. 1928 saw the suffrage extended to all women over twenty-one. Full political equality with men was however, the next goal. Margery, herself, stood at every election from then, until 1935 and again at by-elections in 1937 and 1934. She was unsuccessful in all of them, but her real aim was to encourage other women to come forward as candidates rather than to become an MP herself. Her interests had always been wider than just women’s emancipation. A friend wrote of her saying, “she also fought for civil liberties, freetrade, international goodwill and democracy.” She went as a delegate to The Versailles Peace Conference of the International Alliance of Women. She was elected President of the International Women’s Suffrage Alliance
in 1923 and stayed in that position until she retired in 1946. In 1932 she travelled to Geneva as the British delegate for Disarmament. She was a signatory on a letter asserting that war could be averted if the League of Nations took more positive action. War was inevitable at this point, however, and she quietly worked throughout the duration in many voluntary roles. After the war she became politically active again and was awarded the DBE by the Queen for her services to women in 1967. Dame Margery went on her last demonstration, in London in 1980, at the age of 98. She died the following year, just a month after her 99th birthday. During her long and active life, she used her gift of being a rousing and passionate speaker to draw others to her many causes. Her strong religious belief and her family heritage made her one of the best-known women of her generation in this area. From sharing a platform with the Pankhursts at the turn of the twentieth century she went on to work for many different causes. As she said in one of her inspirational speeches: “Let us awake and determine women shall enter the machine to direct it for the defence of democracy.”

Harry and the Wasps
Last month many locals will have already heard that Harry Redknapp and Sky Sport’s presenter Hayley McQueen visited the EG Town Football Club’s GAC Stadium. This was part of the ‘Nations Favourite Fans Game’ which was won by club superfan, Mike Phillips, after a single facebook comment! Here is a short quote of Mike’s address to fans from the days’ programme : ‘My first real memory of East Grinstead Town was against Crystal Palace in a friendly to celebrate the newly installed floodlights. Nigel Martyn and Geoff Thomas played. I knew I had a problem then as I was the only kid getting the Grinstead boys to sign my programme after the game. When I was tiny my nan and grandad were club members and played the old fruit machine we used to have. It’s always been a lovely community
Photo: Mike Phillips and his daughter Orla receiving his “Fan of the Match” trophy. club since I can remember. I spent many a day watching the County League on my own and always meeting someone to talk to. This was and is a safe and friendly environment for a kid to be and I was lucky to be able to come here.’ Lots of hard work was put into pulling off what was a fabulous day in the club’s history. We thought it would be a good opportunity to publish a potted history of our town’s football club (with thanks to EGTFC).
EGTFC: A Potted History 1890-1950s 1890s One of the first football clubs in the country, East Grinstead Town Football Club was formed on May 8th, 1890, although it was another ten years before they played their first competitive match as founder members of the Mid Sussex Football League. In those early days the club played in blue and white with the town's coat of arms on the breast pocket. It was some years before they adopted their current colours of amber and black and were nicknamed 'The Wasps,' both of which survive to this day.
1900s They won the Mid Sussex League in 1902 and their first major honour followed seven years later when they shared the Sussex Junior Cup with Arundel. In 1909 they were awarded senior status which they have held ever since apart from two seasons when they were relegated to the intermediate third division of the Sussex County League in 1989.

EGTFC: A POTTED HISTORY CONTINUED
1910s In 1912 Grinstead reached the Sussex Senior Cup final for the only time in their history but lost 4-1 to St Leonards Amateurs in a ferocious snowstorm.
1920s The Wasps were original members of the Sussex County League when it was founded in 1920, but they struggled to make any impact and after finishing bottom in 1927 and replaced by Horsham, they were not re-elected.
1930s Rather than returning to the Mid Sussex League, they had four successful seasons in the Brighton League before stepping up to the Southern Amateur League. A fresh challenge reinvigorated the club and they won the Division Three title in 1932 with 15 victories out of 18. Three years later they played on the test match cricket ground at Trent Bridge in Nottingham when they defeated Nottinghamshire Amateurs 6-0 in the old FA Amateur Cup. Determined to regain their place in the Sussex County League, they were re-elected back in 1937 after winning the Mid Sussex League again and finished fifth in their first season.
1940s In those halcyon days either side of the Second World War, four-figure crowds were the norm at their old ground in West Street, East Grinstead, which they shared with the town's cricketers. The club's record attendance is 2,006 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Lancing in November, 1947.
1950s Success eluded Grinstead until 1952 when they won the Baldwin Cup, the forerunner of the Sussex County League Cup. That team is reckoned by many to be the finest the club has ever produced. It was certainly the most entertaining - 42 games that season in league and cup produced 222 goals! Grinstead were third in 1955, but their fortunes began to decline along with crowd numbers after that. They left West Street in 1959 and had a spell at King Georges Field in the town centre.

FATHER’S MISSION TO BRING BACK BEDTIME STORIES East Grinstead author Stuart Simmonds is releasing a seven-part ‘Hannah The Spanner’ series of illustrated children’s books. Each book in the series follows a different adventure of Hannah and the dreadful Aubrey. Taking the name from his eldest daughter, Stuart promised her that the stories he made up during her childhood would one day be ‘real life’ books. Staying true to his word, he presented Hannah with the pre-release, first editions on her 21st birthday last year. 88% of parents say they wished they could read to their kids before bed more often so these new books are written specifically with bedtime reading in mind, short fun stories, which can be enjoyed time and time again. This has all come off the back of the success from Stuart’s cricket book released last year
which is now being republished. Stuart decided to take the plunge and set up his own publishing business to get out his books without any delays, with the help of lots of brilliant people, he’s thrilled with the outcome. Stuart says, “Reading to Hannah and my other daughter Lucy every night was one of my favourite parts of their childhood, but they grew up before everyone had a smart device and the world became so digital focused. Hopefully both the children and the parents will enjoy these new book as I’ve definitely written them with a slant towards the parents as well. Thankfully, so far, people have found them really amusing which always helps!’. For more information on the series, or to purchase the books please visit www.stuhead.co.uk

At Last by local poet, Peggy Oliver It's early morning, and light so grey I wonder what will be today Surely we deserve some sun To warm the soil for plants so young Soon the thoughts of evening walks Will fill our minds and fill our thoughts And we'll forget how long it's been Since we glanced in wonder at fields so green I know we've seen it all before But somehow spring makes us stand in awe No one wants to miss the start Of natures wonderful show on earth I know we're always grateful Of this lovely wonderful time Given to us so gladly These days called our 'Spring-Time'
THANK YOU FROM THE ASHDOWN FOREST CENTRE We wanted to write and personally thank the readers of East Grinstead Living for their kindness and generosity following our fundraising appeal in last month’s magazine. The response was instantaneous and overwhelming. Donations poured in with messages of support, in memory of loved ones and from charitable trusts. We raised over £5,500 in the following week, from contributions to the donate campaign and through the sale of the 2019 “We support Ashdown Forest” car stickers. Although rewarding (especially with spring fast approaching) the rangers’ role can be quite demanding when we are trying to provide a good service to all the forest users with different needs and issues. So, we were delighted to read the messages of support and its great to know so many people share our love for the forest. Once again thank you for your contributions. With Best Wishes, The Ashdown Forest Rangers PS. Please do visit our website www.ashdownforest.org for further information about the management of Ashdown Forest, our volunteers and our fundraising activities.
