Roofing repairs
Guttering Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

y Keep this hand by the phone as you’ll never know when you’ll need a local service
Dear Residents,
Welcome to our August Edition. This month we have a fantastic article about St. Swithun’s, the distinctive landmark of our town, and it’s history.
Winnie-the-Pooh lived “just round the corner” from East Grinstead in the Ashdown Forest, so we’ve an interesting and rare article about him by Shirley Harrison who recently released her new book about the famous bear. This August sees the first East Grinstead International Arts Festival which is already under way, we have a full program inside. Here is some recent feedback from Roger Mead of the Lions Club about an article for their Belarus Appeal we ran for them: “The feature in E.G. Living magazine is great, we have already had positive response to the article”. So all charities out there, please drop us a line. A big thank you for supporting our many local businesses, the majority of which are East Grinstead based. Enjoy the rest of Summer.

Hidden Talents
01342 410068
Hidden talents are having an Art Exhibition at Ashdown Forest Information Centre,Wych Cross, RH18 5JP. August 2nd to September 30th. Open 2:00 pm to 5:00pm daily. Wealden Hidden Talents, a local charity, is intended to reveal the wealth of artistic talent lying hidden throughout the Wealden Sheltered Housing Schemes, of whom many residents are retired and/or bereaved. The aim of Hidden Talents is to establish more Art and Craft groups within the 13 schemes. We also aim to help individuals, by loaning the equipment necessary to enable them to enrich their lives by unlocking the creative talents hidden within, or even forgotten about over the years. The talent that is emerging is of a surprisingly high standard. The quality of life of our participating residents has been considerably improved by being encouraged to make these journeys of self discovery through artistic expression. info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

DO try this at home! August Recipe Lamb Leg Confit & Herb Cutlet with Carrot & Cumin Mash Recipe by Chef Dean Samsudin at the Brambletye Hotel Try using your local farm shop lamb for this.
Ingredients Serves 4 Crusted Lamb 50g butter 50g white breadcrumbs 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 25g parsley finely chopped 600g piece of best end lamb Rosemary Sauce 50 ml dry white wine 1 beef stock cube, dissolved in 200 ml hot water 1 sprig of Rosemary (chopped) 100g butter Salt & pepper
Lamb Confit 400g leg of lamb, cut from bone and rolled (ask Butcher) Carrot & Cumin Mash 300g carrots peeled and chopped salt & pepper knob butter ½ tsp cumin powder 1 head of garlic brushed with oil
Method 1. Parsley crust: soften butter and blend together with the breadcrumbs, garlic & parsley, add pinch of salt. Place mixture between 2 sheets of greaseproof paper and roll out flat (3mm thick). Place in fridge to firm. Once chilled, cut into square the same size as your piece of best end of lamb. 2. Mash: boil the carrots in salted water till tender, drain, mash with butter & cumin. Season to taste, set aside (keep warm). 3. Rosemary Sauce: Place wine, stock & chopped rosemary into a large sauté/frying pan. Boil to reduce by half, then add butter whilst stirring gently. Remove from heat and season, put aside. 4. Set Oven to 180*C/350*/Gas 4. Using the same pan you made the sauce in, sear the left of lamb for 2 mins all over. Transfer to roasting tin, add the whole head of garlic, cook for 15 mins. 5. Once the leg is cooking, take your best end of lamb, season it, then sear it on either side. Remove from pan, place on your square of herb crust then roast in oven for 10 mins. 6. Remove the leg of lamb from the oven, wrap in foil and rest for 10 mins. Take best end of lamb out of oven after 10 mins and also leave to rest. 7. Spoon mash on to warmed plate, cut rolled leg into 4 portions. Slice best end of lamb into 4 cutlets, place next to leg. Pour over the rosemary sauce, break the head of garlic into cloves and sprinkle over. Serve.

HISTORY NOTES By Caroline Metcalfe
St. Swithun’s Church, East Grinstead St.Swithun’s Church stands just behind the eastern end of East Grinstead’s High Street. The tower reaches into the sky; the church is a landmark for miles around. There has been a church on this site for hundreds of years. The earliest dedication may have been to St Edmund, martyred king, pierced with arrows for refusing to deny the Christian faith. Now the dedication is to Saint Swithun, a ninth century Bishop of Winchester. He requested burial outside his cathedral but about a hundred years later monks brought his body inside the cathedral for reburial. Terrible rainstorms and reports of miracles at Swithun’s tomb followed, giving rise to the tradition that if there is rain on St. Swithun’s day, July 15th, there will be rain for the next forty days. Most years, the weather for our Patronal Festival picnic, on the nearest Sunday to July 15th causes concern to clergy and parishioners! Behind the altar there are carved figures made in the last century representing Saint
Swithun, with ducks at his feet and Saint Edmund, with a wolf. An early wooden church likely existed, but the first real documentation for the church is from 1104, when Alured, the high butler of Earl Roger of Mortain gave the church to Lewes Priory. Tithes from Brambletye would support the Priory; other tithes would support a Rector, chosen by the Priory. Usually the Rector appointed a Vicar who was paid a fixed stipend to carry out parish duties.

The list of clergy on the board reflects the uncertain time of the Reformation, with an incumbent who was ejected during the reign of the Protestant Edward VI and reinstated during the reign of Roman Catholic Queen Mary Tudor. Outside the door is a monument to three Protestants, Anne Tree, Thomas Dunngate and John Forman, burned at the stake in the High Street in 1556, for refusing to turn away from their Protestant faith. The church probably had three aisles by the fifteenth century and it had a tower by the seventeenth century. In 1683, lightning struck the steeple. A contemporary wrote: ‘the resultant fire caught the shingles of the spire. In a short time the bell lofts were all but burned to the ground and the bells melted, but by God’s mercy and the industry of the people, with a Providential change of wind, the church was preserved untouched by the fire and the surrounding houses in the town were saved.’

The most famous is a guinea pig with wings, in honour of the ‘Guinea Pigs’, the wartime servicemen whose terrible burns were treated at Queen Victoria Hospital. These windows were installed by 1989. The tower was rebuilt with unsound foundations, so it collapsed again on November 12th 1785, damaging the nave badly. Some pillars survived intact, but walls had to be pulled down. There had been a wedding that morning in the church. An Act of Parliament was passed authorising rebuilding in 1787; finally by 1875 the amount of £30,000 (nearly 2 million in today’s money) had been collected. The architect James Wyatt designed the new church. It is said that Mr. Speaker Abbott, whose funeral hatchment hangs in the church, wanted the tower to be twenty-five feet higher so that he could see the weather vane from his mansion at Kidbrooke.
to the murder of her little half brother in 1865. His murder at Road Hill House was infamous in its day. The death sentence was passed, only Queen Victoria’s intervention led to a reprieve. A recent television dramatisation of these happenings was based on the book ‘The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher’, by Kate Summerscale. The stained glass windows are magnificent. Many are scenes from the life of Jesus. The Oxford Movement window depicts John Mason Neale, Warden of Sackville College almshouse ( just across the churchyard) from 1846 to 1866. Neale is surrounded by likeminded Victorians- Keble, Woodard, Hook and Rose. Neale wrote Protestant Martyrs’ graves
In 1836 a pinnacle fell from the tower into the nave and in 1930 a pinnacle fell through the church roof, so all the pinnacles were shortened. Proof is hard to find, but it is believed that the mosaic work in the Sanctuary was made by prisoners including Constance Kent. Having been declared innocent in 1860, she confessed August 2011 • East Grinstead Living

The bells in the belfry are some of the finest in the diocese and are rung on Sundays to summon the faithful to prayer. St. Swithun’s is a large parish and there are two daughter churches of St. Luke and St. Barnabas. Our wonderful team of clergy continue to care for the people of the town. In May the ‘Reachout’ Mission was very successful. The church is open during the daytime. People are welcome to come in for quiet prayer, to enjoy a few moments of peace in the church, or to look around the Church. Free leaflets tell visitors about the history of the church and about church services.

Sarah Young’s Skydive Imagine standing at the edge of an open doorway in an aircraft flying at 10,000 feet – the noise of the engines and the wind ringing in your ears with only the outline of distant fields below. Now imagine leaning forward out of that doorway and letting go – falling forward into the clouds, diving down through the air and freefalling at over 120mph! Agony Aunt
Dear Sylvia,
I’m finding it difficult to get my 8 year old son to do any work around the house. Every time he’s asked to do something he flatly refuses and I have to give him a lecture about it and often threaten, “no treats!” to get him to do even a simple chore. I’ve been hoping he’ll come round to the idea that it’s all part of life but that doesn’t seem to be happening…
I don’t remember either myself or brother and sisters being so stubborn. We seemed to realise that it was part of our familial duties to get a daily job done, even if we were sometimes reluctant. I can’t seem to be able to get my son to realise for himself that it’s not just “mum & dad” who do all the work… All suggestions welcome... Thank You, Marion
Sylvia says: Dear Marion, Have you tried bribing him with pocket money? When I was a mum, my girls would help me out with the housework and I would give them a little bit of pocket money every week? Try the carrot versus stick approach.
Send in your own “Dear Sylvia”, email: info@egliving.co.uk or write to: Dear Sylvia, 33 Mo rton Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 4AF. (pl ease note we can not pro mise publication of letter or that it will be answered. On e letter per month to be fea tured)
But perhaps he needs to learn about choice and consequences too. Give him his list of chores and list the treats/pocket money etc he will get if he chooses to help you but be very strict about not letting him have TV/computer time/pocket money if he chooses not to.
Be very clear about the consequences of his choices. ‘You didn’t help me with those chores, and that’s fine but the consequence is that you have no TV time tonight. ‘ But always allow him to make that choice. Don’t force him into it or make into a punishment but let him see how his choices affect his life. Perhaps let your other children (or even his friends!) do his chores and then give them his pocket money. Let him see the connection between his choices and the consequences of his choices. All of our choices have consequences so it’s a good life lesson to learn early on. I hope that helps, Sylvia

Gardening Tips for AUgust Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Shrubs and Trees
Keep Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas well watered during dry weather otherwise the flower buds for next year may not develop properly. To improve growth feed with a liquid ericaceous fertiliser. Trim lavender bushes once the flowers have finished to encourage new growth. Summer blooming shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches.
Fruit and Vegetables
Pinch out tomato side shoots. Continue to feed tomato plants each week with a liquid tomato feed. Prune raspberries and gooseberries. Tie in new raspberry shoots and the main stems and side shoots of gooseberries should be shortened to five leaves. Plant rooted strawberry runners now to ensure a good crop next year. Pick courgettes regularly. Pinch out the tips of the climbing shoots of runner beans once they reach the tip of their supports. Sow lettuce, winter spinach, spring cabbage and Chinese cabbage out of doors.
Lawns
Mow the lawn before going on holiday.
Roses
Stop feeding roses now. Rambler roses that have finished flowering can be pruned now. Cut the long old stems that flowered this year, but leave non-flowering shoots, as these should bloom next year.
Miscellaneous
Water all containers on a regular basis and feed regularly. Take cuttings of shrubby herbs and tender perennials. Trim hedges. Plant Autumn Flowering Crocus this month.

11 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know
A bout W innie -T he -P ooh by Shirley Harrison
1
The original teddy bear who became known as Winnie-the- Pooh celebrates his 90th birthday this month.
2
He was made at the Farnell toy factory in Acton and sold in Harrods to A.A.Milne’s wife, Daphne for 10s 6d. He was a first birthday present for their son Christopher Robin. Originally he had a growl but has now lost his voice.
3
Pooh made his first visit to Hartfield in 1925 when the Milnes bought Cotchford Farm as a weekend and holiday home for the family and the toys – Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, Roo and Piglet.
4
The stories Pooh inspired there have been translated into more than 46 languages including Mongolian. “Winnie Ille Pu”, is the only book in Latin to be featured on the New York Times best-seller list.
5 6
There is a Winnie-the-Pooh street in Moscow!
7
In 1961, five years after her husband’s death, Daphne Milne licensed the film rights to Disney and Pooh became an animated super-star with a place on Hollywood’s Pavement of the Stars.
8
Today he lives in retirement in the Children’s Department of New York Central Library with the original friends from the nursery. He is visited there by 750,000 people a year and is sometimes invited to witness the engagement of young couples and birthday celebrations.
9
Pooh the philanthropist is richer than the Queen, whose fortune is worth about £350m whereas Pooh earns around £375 billion from merchandising alone. This money is cared for by a number of trusts and funnelled into a wide variety of charitable causes.
10
Pooh returned to Hartfield in 1976 where he hosted a picnic for hundreds of visiting teddy bears and their owners. He was taken to the Enchanted Place for a story, with the children of Hartfield Playschool and went to play Poohsticks near his former home in Cotchford Lane.
11
Today there is an annual International Poohsticks Competition on the Thames in Oxford which attracts 500 competitors.

A.A.Milne lent him to his American publisher, E.P Dutton in 1947. He left aboard the luxurious Queen Elizabeth liner and never came home.

The Life and Times of the Real Winnie-the-Pooh by Shirley Harrison To celebrate his 90th birthday this is the first, fascinating, biography of the real teddy bear which was the inspiration for A.A. Milne’s Winniethe-Pooh. It takes us from his “birth” in an Acton toy factory in 1921 to Harrods where he was bought by Mrs Daphne Milne for her baby son, Christopher Robin. Containing much original material, friends of the Milne family and Pooh’s Guardians in the United States, tell their stories and share their previously unpublished photos and diaries. A truly heart-warming tale of a cuddly teddy bear, loved by Christopher Robin and transformed into one of the world’s richest and most famous bears of all time. Published by: Pen & Sword Books Limited, Tel: 01226 734555. Also available at Waterstones, East Grinstead and the Bookshop, East Grinstead.

Suffering from aches pains or injury? “After 20 years of pain in my right shoulder from playing badminton and countless visits to GP’s and Physios who recommended I stopped playing, Annemarie at Musclebound sorted my shoulder in just 4 sessions! I no longer have any pain and am still playing badminton. I would recommend Musclebound to anyone.” M. Jones of Copthorne. Our soft tissue make up the majority of our body, it is complex and connected more than we realise, and many of us do not understand the function and make up of our body or why we have niggling aches and pains that cannot be resolved and do not seem to go away. Most of our soft tissue issues stem from our childhood, work environment or everyday functions that we do but unfortunately our bodies are not given a second thought until we have a trauma whether that be from sport, taking a tumble or undergoing an operation. Our soft tissues are made up of muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia that communicate and balance the body in both structure and function. It gives us our shape, supports our skeleton and joints, communicates information and moves nutrients and waste. It determines our movement, agility and flexibility and does all of this without us even thinking about it. You have over 600 muscles in your body, attached to your skeleton by tendons. To carry out one movement your muscles will work in groups assisting one another, however, if one of those muscles is damaged your body will compensate by using a different muscle, or group of muscles, to undertake the movement and it is from this point your body starts to alter and over time those aches and pains develop and movement starts to become restricted.
Your muscles are made up of hundreds of fibres, think of them as strands of spaghetti. When they are cold, never stretched, or restricted to a continuous specific short movement they are like uncooked spaghetti that when put under pressure will snap. To be effective they need to be elastic, soft and supple like cooked spaghetti. Many of us do not alter or stretch beyond our daily activities but then occasionally we do:a day gardening, a bike ride or a long walk, asking our body to do something out of the norm, our muscles get stretched and strained and this results in the fibres breaking causing us pain and reduced movement. Unless this is treated the problem does not resolve resulting in long term suffering. Many problems seen are the result of childhood. Many children complain of pain and we pass it off as ‘growing pains’, this is normally wrong. Children grow in spurts and always go from being inactive at the school desk into sessions of extreme activity in the playground or sports, generally without warming up or stretching their muscles, tendons and ligaments. The result is damaged soft tissue that gives aches and pains and if not treated has the long term effect of altering the development and movement of a joint, affecting the range of movement and posture of the child as they grow into adulthood.
Your soft tissues need maintenance and looking after, for more information, or an appointment, contact Musclebound

ASHURST WOOD HISTORIANS
PUBLISH NEW BOOK Are you interested in the history of Ashurst Wood? The Historians have just published a book covering it’s history from medieval times. Although not mentioned in the Domesday Book, there is reference to farms on either side of Ashurst Wood and clear evidence has been found of the Roman occupation in the 1st and 2nd centuries. Did you know that there was a mail coach robbery on the edge of the village at the beginning of the 19th century and the culprits were subsequently hanged on the site? For people interested in timber framed houses there are a number in the village dating back to between 1300 and 1700 and there is a whole section on these. This includes the story of how the historic Homestall was significantly increased in size in the 1930s by adding Dutton Hall from Cheshire. This 1540 typical West Midlands ornamented timber framed house was transported down piece by piece in 66 lorries and re-erected as an extension to the east wing. Thus the name of the property was changed to Dutton Homestall. The book is available from the News Store in Hammerwood Road, Ashurst Wood, The Bookshop in the High Street, East Grinstead or Keith Stacey (Ashurst Wood Historians Chairman) on 01342 323880

Following a shipwreck, Viola is washed ashore in Illyria, a country where everything is illogical and delirious. To protect herself she adopts a male disguise. But what use are disguises when Lady Olivia falls madly in love with her, and she herself falls in love with Count Orsino? It could all end in tears - even if most of them are of laughter. Illyria performs the finest comedy in English on a stage exactly the same as those used by mediaeval touring troupes. Bring low backed chairs or rugs/cushions and a picnic, dress for the weather and do not bring umberellas. Performance will go ahead whatever the weather. 6:30pm – 9:30pm. 07718 585303 or illyria@02.co.uk August 2011 • East Grinstead Living
