Dear Sariah... Our local agony aunt, Sariah Jackson, make a welcome return. A trained midwife and mother of four, who better to ask? egliving.co.uk, your questions send through to info@ If you would like Sariah to answer ! wish we can change your name if you

Dear Sariah, My brother-in-law used to be very close to our children (he has no children of his own) but after a fall out with my husband he's no longer interested at all, we struggle to see him once a year. I've worked on trying to get my husband to resolve the situation and it is better, they are now civil again, but he remains uninterested. I've even suggested he might like to take the kids for a day out without us (all expenses paid, I would take them and pick up, etc. they are old enough to do this with ease) but he has absolutely no interest. To give you an idea, at his own wedding he said the day his nieces, nephews were born were the best days of his life... It's painful to witness, but I think it might be time to give up. - Marion

It sounds as if the issues between your husband and his brother aren’t really resolved and that could be why your brother in law is struggling to allow himself back in to your family circle. You say that they are civil to each other now and that doesn’t bear the hallmarks of a good relationship. Perhaps his need to keep himself away from your children is an effort at self-protection, a way to keep his distance in case relations break down again. Is there any way that your husband and his brother could really get together and fix their broken relationship? From an outside perspective, it feels like this may be the root cause of his absence. If you feel this isn’t something your husband could do, perhaps just have an honest, open conversation with your brother-in-law. Ask him why he chooses to keep his distance from your children and perhaps share how much you all miss him in your lives. You can’t force someone to have a relationship with your children, however sad that may be, but perhaps trying to open the lines of communication with him is the starting point to the children having their uncle back.

HeART to Heart

I’m sure many locals have by now spotted the beautiful heart in front of Sackville College? This heart and others, are part of St Catherine’s Hospice’s first ever community art trail, HeART to Heart, put together after two years of preparation. Twenty six beautiful fibreglass hearts, each one designed by a local artist and sponsored by a local business, are spread throughout the area which St Catherine’s serves. Throughout the ten weeks that the hearts are in-situ, the local community will be invited to follow the trail, and join in a range of family friendly, creative activities. As we go to print the hearts have already helped to raise much needed funds! For more info: www.stch.org.uk/hearttoheart.

20 years on: HRH Prince of Wales returns to the Millennium Seed Bank and Wakehurst ©Jim Holden/RBG Kew

Last month HRH The Prince of Wales visited Wakehurst place and specifically the Millennium Seed Bank (MSB) to see the progress made since he opened the striking glass building back in 2000. Initially the aspiration was to bank 10% of the world’s wild seeds by 2010, but today, the Wakehurst seed bank proudly represents the largest wild seed conservation project in the world, with 2.25 billion seeds from 190 countries!

Inside the bank, His Royal Highness (Patron of RBG Kew since 2016) visited the Surviving or Thriving exhibition, based on the State of the Worlds Plants and Fungi report, plus the underground vault where he was shown the processes involved in freezing seeds. Later, Ed Ikin, Head of Landscape and Horticulture at Wakehurst, explained how Kew’s science and the horticulture teams work together to propagate species for the future. The visit ended at Wakehurst’s stunning Coronation Meadow, created in response to Prince Charles’ request for wild meadows to be planted on the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.

Brilliant

Beauty Tips

With such an amazing range of beauty products and treatments on the market these days, it’s never been easier to enhance your natural features! Here are some tips to help.

1. Invest in anti- pollution skincare

3. Face wipes

The environment can have a devastating effect on your skin over time – causing acne, blackheads, irritation, etc, so try to find masks and treatments that contain anti-oxidants which help your skin fight back and give your face a deep cleanse at least once a week, to remove as many impurities as possible. Also try to find a skin care brand that treats the cause of issues and not the symptom.

It may be time to break up with your face wipes… the majority are loaded with chemicals, not what your skin needs. And especially a massive no-no around the delicate eye area (they are also a no-no for environmentally sustainable living).

2. Instant eye lift You can’t overstate the huge impact the shape of your brows and colour-strength has on your overall look, you can work on this with products like kohl pencils, brushes, etc. or consider a professional treatment with shaping, lash extensions and lifts. The effect can be dramatic and take years off.

4. Oily skin? Despite the temptation avoid harsh cleansers. It’s easy to go hardcore, but if it’s too harsh you’re making the problem worse, as the skins natural response is to just produce more oil. Choose a gentle, soap-free cleanser, preferably fragrance-free.

5. NEVER EVER forget your SPF! Brought to you by Louella of local salon, Beauty by Louella (see ad opposite).

Riding for Brooke Last month, riders from across the area took part in a sponsored ride through Ashdown Forest, where over £3000 was raised for Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, a charity which cares for over 100 million working horses and donkeys in the world. The charity supports the lives of of 600 million people in countries including Pakistan, India, Kenya and Ethiopia, etc. to educate the owners of their working horses and donkeys to help them care for their animals and ease their suffering. Shelters are built to provide shade from the hot sun, veterinarians to treat animals and advise owners, farriers to trim hooves, advice about harnesses, tack, etc. They work with governments at all levels and

international bodies such as the UN to provide support and promote long-lasting change. Deborah Jackson who helped arrange the ride is to put on another on the 21st September. Walkers are also welcome to join in and dogs (on leads). The start is at Pippingford Park, TN22 3HW. There is ample parking, toilets, caterers and an ice cream van. There is a 10 or 7 mile route (different to July’s route) taking in amazing views. Riders can book in via www.equoevents. co.uk and there’s a prize for the rider who raises the most. Also see FB page, Ashdown Forest Sponsored Ride.

Reunion Number 7! In February 1984 a chance meeting between two former East Grinstead Grammar School class mates prompted them to stage a reunion in the June of that year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of them sitting their (then) GCE ‘O’ Level exams. In a surprisingly short time they’d recruited almost 60 of their contemporaries, plus Headmaster Mr R V Dawes and eight of his teaching colleagues from that era. Over a series of five-yearly events the number was expanded with people from Canada, USA, Ireland, South Africa and Australia joining the ranks.

On 29th June this year, Reunion number 7 took place at the customary venue of The Brambletye Hotel in Forest Row with 32 attendees arriving on the hottest day of the year (thus far). For a generation of war babies who predated the NHS, space exploration and supersonic flight, the years rolled back as if 1959 had been the day before! Initially billed as

probably the last of its kind, a distinction not matched by any of the school’s annual intakes before them or since, a chorus of voices expressed a hope for No 8, “maybe when we’re 80!”. Clearly a unique ‘Windmill Lane vintage’ – EG Grammar School was where Imberhorne Lower School is now, in Windmill Lane. Here’s hoping for number 8!

Local girl Tiah aims high with unperfect few years apart, which was nuts. Then one day the four of us found ourselves grouped together on a sofa at the Xenomania Christmas party. We realised we’d been writing and singing on the same beats and ideas. And then we had a lightbulb moment! We approached Brian with our plan to join forces, and he immediately saw the potential in our chemistry’. Local, East Grinstead girl, Tiah Mason-Windett is a member a newly formed vibrant pop girl group ‘unperfect’, a new prototype for 21st century girl bands. Siobhan, Soipan and Chloe, with Tiah, form the fourmember pop group. Unperfect is the brain child of Xenomania (the band’s label), a pop production house responsible for all of Girls Aloud’s 21 top 10 hits, as well as Cher’s, ‘Believe' and Sugababes, ‘Round Round’; it is headed by Brian Higgins. Tiah says: ‘It all kind of fell into place really. Siobhan and Soipan both met Brian at a Xenomania audition in Shoreditch. Chloe was already working with an Xenomania after being introduced to Brian by another songwriter, and I’d been dipping in and out of studio life at Xenomania from the age of 14. Siobhan and Soipan kept running into each other in the studio kitchen, and found out that they had gone to the same school a

Since then it’s been a whirlwind for the girls. One recent highlight Tiah tells us was when Elton John played their first single, Gots To Give The Girl on his Beats 1 show and said it was, ‘the coolest song he’d heard in a long time’. I asked Tiah about her childhood growing up in the area, ‘I had loads of different interests as a child, but I always absolutely loved singing. I was in the choir at primary school and part of a local singing group. My first performance was at Bluebells (Grub at the time). I was in the choir at Blackwell Primary and part of a singing

group with one of my best friends. I used to play netball at Mount Noddy which is where my love for netball was sparked. As I got older, I started concentrating on sports and got into Ardingly on a sports scholarship, but then opportunities turned up in my late teens to pursue singing and that’s what led me to now.’ The girls recently worked with Robinsons Fruit Shoot on their new single, ‘I’m a Dreamer’, which aims to inspire kids to dream big, and Tiah is looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead, ‘to show what we’re about and what we can do’. We asked Tiah what local support she has had so far, ‘I’ve had so much support from my friends, and friends of friends, in and around East Grinstead, messaging me when they hear us on the radio or playing in shops. It’s really nice to be able to do them proud’. We wish Tiah and unperfect the best of luck for the future!

Don’t Lose Your Way Our rights of way network is one of the country’s greatest assets with over 1400 miles of public paths criss-crossing England and Wales which have evolved over centuries. Millions in our cities, towns and countryside use this unique network but did you know that many miles of our public paths remain unrecorded and could be lost forever if they are not put on the definitive map (the legal record) by 2026? Ramblers, the walking charity, are urging us to get involved to identify and claim any unrecorded routes before it’s too late, which is why they have launched their, “Don’t Lose Your Way” campaign. Anyone can help with this and a guide with full details of the historical background can be found on www.ramblers.org.uk. Local rambler, Trevor Mann, of the High Weald Walkers says, “The unrecorded routes do need to be identified and claimed by 2026. Most exist in law and many exist on the ground and are in current use but all are in danger of being permanently extinguished. If you use a regular route which is not officially on the map it may be one of the 10,000+ unrecorded rights of

way which need to be officially preserved. Don’t delay, download your guide from the rambler’s website and see how you can save your path” ( for more about High Weald Walkers see www.highwealdwalkers.org.uk). Interested in rambling? Another local group is the East Grinstead based, Ashdown Rambling Group, despite the club name, walks are not limited to the Ashdown Forest. The member-led walks cover a wide area of Surrey, Kent and Sussex and try to ensure that old and unused paths are kept open. Almost all walks are circular and at the end the group enjoys a cup of tea with cakes or biscuits. The club offers a programme of walks on Sundays and Wednesdays of varying lengths, see ashdownramblers.btck.co.uk.

Once upon a Pooh Bridge As we all know Pooh bridge is located in Ashdown Forest, not far from Hartfield. Built in 1907, it was originally called Posingford Bridge and lay between two large estates of the area, it crosses a tributary of the River Medway. It was of course made famous by the game of Poohsticks which was first played on the bridge by Christopher Robin Milne and immortalised by his father in the Pooh stories. We can’t know if the game was first played at the bridge and then written into the story, or written into the story and then played at the bridge… In the late seventies East Sussex Country Council planned to replace the existing bridge (which was in danger of collapsing because its upright supports had almost rotted away) with a single-span utility structure. There was a public outcry! The bridge was held in the public’s consciousness by the

omnipresence of Pooh and so a campaign was launched to rebuild it, true to the original structure. The bridge was subsequently reopened by Christopher Robin Milne in 1979 and officially renamed as Poohsticks Bridge. The contributions had come in from Pooh’s world-wide fan club, his publishers,

Methuen, and Natwest. Representatives of ESCC pulled out the publicity stops for the opening, with white tape across the bridge and a speech by the chairman of the council’s highways and transportation committee! The site was so popular that twenty years later, in 1999

Sustainable Living Tips We are all getting far more aware of our need to take responsibility for the waste we create and what happens to it (in particular plastic) which is all part of sustainable living. Here are a couple of tips you might like to try: • If you can't sell an item but you need to get rid of it fast, you can place it (or ask a friend to) on a local Facebook selling site for free - or put it on ebay for a £1. This is very effective and you can have it collected, rather than having the problem of taking it to the tip. It might be just what someone else is looking for! • Make up ecobricks using your old plastic bottles and stuff them full of plastic (ecobricks are used to make plastic structures), to get more information about how to make them effectively and where to drop them locally see: www.facebook.com/

groups/ecobricksUK. • Ban clingfilm and sandwich bags from your cupboard and use other coverings like reusable beeswax wraps or glass (or existing plastic) containers that can be used over and over again.

Once upon a Pooh Bridge continued

the ESCC made an appeal to Disney as the old wooden bridge had been worn down by an overwhelming number of visitors and we had entered a new age of health and safety concerns and the bridge didn’t comply. Disney provided a substantial donation towards the estimated £30,000 needed to replace it. The donations from Disney, building firms and members of the public funded its complete reconstruction yet again. The newly built and modernised bridge retained its precursor’s original style and was health and safety compliant. However, what happened to the Pooh Bridge that Christopher Robin Milne had opened all those years ago? Well, after it was dismantled, it remained in an ESCC warehouse for many years until it was decided it should be donated to the Forest Centre at Wych Cross in the late noughties. Then about 5 years ago or so, it came under new management, where it was reconstructed in a private garden and where it remains to this day. It is now looking for a ‘new home’ and we had the privilege of visiting its present site recently. At the time of its official opening, back in ’79, Christopher Milne said of the Hartfield area, that there were more houses than during his childhood, but nothing else had changed. Of the bridge he was quoted as saying, “I first found the bridge 20

years after it had been built when I came upon it with my nanny. How could we not fall in love with it? Then my parents came and how could they not fall in love with it? If Pooh was here today, a hum would be working its way up to the surface, Rabbit would be making a list, Eeyore would be down by the water somewhere feeling left out and Tigger would have pushed you reporters out of the way.” I wonder if he knew then that Pooh’s legacy would continue well into the 21st century, growing steadily across the

world to international fame and firmly cementing has place in classic children’s literature for progeny. For any enquiries about Pooh Bridge, please drop an email through to the editor, info@ ashdownforestliving. co.uk, (NB: A donation to facilitate the ongoing management of the Ashdown Forest and its environs will be made after a successful sale of the bridge).

EG10K: The Andy Ripley Memorial Race This year’s race on the 29th September is our tenth anniversary, so we are hoping for a memorable event. We have raised over £30,000 for various charities, principally Prostate Cancer UK and EG Lions. As ever, the race is dedicated to the memory of Andy Ripley, who was an inspirational Rugby Union player for England and the British Lions and lived locally; he sadly passed away from prostate cancer. As well as being a national rugby treasure, Andy was also a stalwart supporter of various East Grinstead clubs.

SUDOKUS

As the race is in its tenth year, we asked the Ripley family for a quote from the man himself. They mentioned this quote, taken

from his book, 'Ripley's World': “Dare we hope? We dare. Can we hope? We can. Should we hope? We must, because to do otherwise is to waste the most precious of gifts, given so freely by God to all of us. So when we do die, it will be with hope and it will be easy and our hearts will not be broken.” The organisers are hoping for an extra special turn out this year... time to grab those running shoes! Race start time: 10am, Imberhorne Upper School, £15 (runners affiliated to UK Athletics); £17 (others); entry through the race website: www.eg10k.co.uk.

Update: Forest Row Festival After a year’s break, Forest Row Festival is back on weekend 20th-22nd Sept with an amazing programme of music, spoken word and art. New for 2019 will be a series of cross-generational events, a movie-making competition, and the welcome return of the village bike ride. The festival team has been busy raising awareness: last month local artist Julian Johnson led a group who decorated the façade of the former Coop on Hartfield Road in suitable festival style. The team have also organised fundraising gigs, the next is at Hop Yard on 6th September with an all-star line-up. Great news, the festival has again been selected for National Lottery funding.

“The lottery money is fantastic. Combined with the generosity of local people and businesses, it helps keep the festival free to attend”, commented organiser Matt Hatton, “but our fundraising is still behind where we were in 2017 and with more than £3000 of extra costs to meet!”. In order to meet growing costs, the festival is looking for sponsors, with options

including entrance banners, programme adverts and many others. Direct donations are also flooding in. They can be made via JustGiving. com, under the name “FrowFest2019”. You can contact the team about sponsorship opportunities, or events you may want to run over the weekend at enquiries@ forestrowfestival.org.uk.

250 years of East Court: Exhibition Cranston, a lawyer who had married a local heiress, the house was initially a family home set in 900 acres, including three additional farmsteads. Over the years it became an army barracks, was squatted and was home to East Grinstead's Urban District Council, later to become East Grinstead Town Council.

East Grinstead Town Council is proud to be the current custodian of East Court. This year an exhibition celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the building. Built in 1769, by the Scot John

Come along to East Court, to see how the house has changed in this free exhibition covering the last 250 years. Open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday. The exhibition will run through to the end of the year (opening times may change as events may make the hall inaccessible to the public). Please call in advance.

East Grinstead Sports Club Has been the space for local sports clubs to train and go on to excel at their sport. We opened in 1989 when East Grinstead Cricket Club and East Grinstead Hockey Club worked together to create a centralised sports club. As the years went on, we have welcomed CD Phoenix Netball, Dunning’s Squash and Racketball, East Grinstead Meads Football and Felbridge Badminton clubs. Each affiliated club has had success in their chosen fields. We are proud to say that world champions have used our facilities to train. We’re known for our sports clubs, but we’re open for everyone. Our grounds are the perfect setting for outdoor classes when the sun is shining, and when it’s not we have ample studio space. We offer yoga and pilates and are official providers of the famous Les Mills workouts. If you’re looking to better your health and boost your wellbeing, we have classes every day that will help you on your way. And our gym is open seven days a week. Earlier on in the year we invested some money into making it a more comfortable place to workout in. We updated the lighting and flooring, and the air conditioning to make it the perfect environment to reach your goals, which our

personal trainers are happy to help you achieve. Our onsite physiotherapists, Flex, help make this a complete sporting facility. When the whistle blows and the weights are down, we have a fully licensed bar, complete with Sky TV and even an escape room. The bar area and other parts of the sports club can be privately hired out. Whether it’s a small celebration or a wedding reception we can cater for all events. So why not become a member? Membership can be taken out online (www.egsc.org.uk) or at reception, and there is a range to choose from. Our most popular membership costs £37.95 a month and includes unlimited gym use, unlimited classes and unlimited racket sports. There is no joining fee for any of our memberships, and parking is free. And members who sign up before 31st August will get 50% off their first payment and a free session with one of our personal trainers (worth £40). There’s never been a better time to join your local sports club. We look forward to welcoming you! Nick Vowels, East Grinstead Sports Club Site Manager

Miss Moneywise CLEANING TIPS Clean toilet: Pour the cola neat around the rim and let it flow into the bowl. Let it sit for about an hour and then scrub off any stubborn stains with a toilet brush, it’s great for tackling all limescale. Clean grout: Saturate a rag with coke and

damp down grout. Leave it for 10 mins and clean off thoroughly, use an old toothbrush to scrub if possible. If grout isn’t fully clean, repeat. Clean a dirty pan: Finding it hard to clean burnt on food? Poor cola in the pan and leave for a good while, then scrub off the residue.

Front Cover Artist Local resident Roland Nissan is an urban sketcher and painter working mainly around London and East Grinstead. Concentrating on buildings and street scenes, his work sometimes sells on the streets even before they are completed. Roland often sketches on-site as he believes this is the best way to capture the ambience of the scene. He is just as happy to work from photographs that he gets sent for commissions. He is proud that his work has been noticed around the world due to his exposure on social media. So far, the furthest his work has travelled is Australia and the US. Having recently given up his job to concentrate on his passion, he hopes to spend a lot more time sketching around the East Grinstead and Sussex areas and invites the readers to say “hello” if they spot him at work. As well as working for fun and commissions, Roland has a few projects up his sleeve that will help to get his work seen more. One involves a book that he will be working on in association a few well known people on East Grinstead. Roland can be contacted by email for commissions - contact@rolandnissanart. com or via: www.rolandnissanart.com.
