The Peop le in Our Community

This month we interview

Lynn Skinner

Community Fundraiser for St. Catherine’s Hospice What do you like most about what you do? Working and meeting different people What is the hardest part of your community role? Trying to get people to understand what the hospice can do and also what services St Catherines can offer to people and their families. Why did you decide to volunteer in this area? My husband died 18 years ago at the hospice. They were so kind so i wanted to help them as much as they helped me. What’s the best thing about living in the East Grinstead area? I was born here and therefore know so many people What has been the highlight of the year so far? Other than a great holiday in Europe, I would say fundraising for the hospice as people are so generous in East Grinstead

December 2010 • East Grinstead Living

What’s your favourite song? You are my sunshine What’s your favourite film? The Eagle has landed What’s your favourite one-liner? Every penny counts Who or what is the biggest inspiration to what you do? My biggest inspiration is to try and raise as much money as possible by volunteering for St Catherines hospice. This has also allowed me to go out into the community and meet so many people. I hope with the fund raising that we do through the year it will help so many people and their families.

St Catherine’s Hospice is looking for Santa’s Little Helpers! Here’s a great opportunity to support St Catherine’s Hospice, your local provider of end of life care, this Christmas. We urgently need volunteers to help out at our Santa Run event at East Court in East Grinstead, 8.30am – 1pm on Sunday 12th December. You’ll be helping us keep the event running smoothly, marshalling the route, registering participants, assisting with parking directions, serving refreshments and helping to set up and pack away. This is a fun family event, open to everyone and all those taking part will be dressed in their Santa suits, helping raise vital funds for St Catherine’s. As a volunteer you’ll receive refreshments and a set of reindeer antlers to help you get in the festive spirit! You’ll be 18 years old or over, have good communication, teamwork and people skills and be willing to help with varied tasks on the day with a positive, friendly attitude

and approachable nature. A basic level of fitness will be required as you may need to walk between points on the 1K route at times. For more information please contact Jen Wickham on 01293 447364 or jenwickham@stch.org.uk St Catherine’s Hospice is a local, independent charity that provides end of life care and support for patients and their loved

ones across Mid Sussex and East Surrey. Every year, it relies on the generosity of people across the area to help raise £4.7 million in voluntary income needed to ensure people are cared for across the area. If you or your family would like to take part in this year’s Santa Run, sponsored by Southern Railway, visit our special festive website at www.stch.org.uk/ christmas

Q: What’s the difference between a traditional tattoo and Semi -permanent? A-MaryAnne: A traditional tattoo is done to last, so inks are implanted deeply in lower layers of the dermis. Semi permanent Art be it make up or body, is worked only into the very upper layers of the dermis and with specially formulated pigments; it is a graze of colour and needs to be boosted annually or it will fade away.

Frankincense is a sweet smelling gum resin derived from certain Boswellia trees which , at the time of Christ, grew in Arabia, India, and Ethiopia. Tradition says that it was presented to the Christ Child by Balthasar, the black king from Ethiopia or Saba. The frankincense trade was at its height during the days of the Roman Empire . At that time this resin was considered as valua ble as gems or precious metals. The Romans burne d frankincense on their altars and at cremations.

Winter was a time of celebration to preChristian Romans and they decorated fir trees in honour of this seasonal change

Some Ideas to keep the kids occupied in the holidays!

Home made paper chains is always a winner. You need nothing more than paper, scissors and glue (decorations like glitter to add to the paper as you like) Hand-made Christmas cards for all the members of their family (or others)

Looking after a “bird table” (anything flat and raised will do) and make them responsible for looking after the birds by topping it up regularly with bread crusts etc. Home-made Christmas Tree Decorations (see our cookie recipe, for instance) A “Christmas Race” in the garden. This will get them outside for fresh air and warm them up! Make it the best out of 10/20 (enough to keep them going a while). Younger siblings get a head start. Give them some big card-board boxes and old sheets and suggest they make a fabulous camp in their bedroom. They’ll love it.

John Mason Neale

Warden Sackville College (1846 – 1866) He was born in London and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. At Cambridge Neale was affected by the Oxford Movement, the members of which argued for the reinstatement of lost Christian traditions that are most often associated with Roman Catholicism. He helped found the Cambridge Camden Society which promoted a return to the “medieval or Gothic church architecture”. It is well known that the gothic style was in fashion during the Victorian times. Though he took orders in 1841, ill health prevented his settling in England until 1846, when he became warden of Sackville College, which is, as many of us know, an almshouse (home for the poor). As the most famous past warden of Sackville College he held this appointment till his death. In 1854 Neale co-founded the Society of Saint Margaret, an order of women in the Anglican Church dedicated to nursing the sick. As their numbers increased, they moved into their first convent, Saint Margaret’s in East Grinstead. Many of us know this as the “Old Convent” most of which has now been converted into houses. Many Anglicans in his day, however, were very suspicious of anything suggestive of Roman Catholicism. Only nine years earlier, the recently beautified, John Henry Newman had encouraged Catholic practices in the Anglican Church, and had ended up joining the Roman Catholic Church himself. This encouraged the suspicion that anyone like Neale was an agent of the Vatican, assigned to destroy the Anglican Church by subverting it from within. Once Neale was attacked and mauled at a funeral of one of the Sisters. From time to time unruly crowds threatened to stone him or to burn his house. He received no honour in England, and his doctorate was bestowed by Trinity College (Connecticut). However, his basic goodness eventually won the December 2010 • East Grinstead Living

confidence of many who had fiercely opposed him, and the Sisterhood of St. Margaret survived and prospered. The sisterhood still survive to this day both locally and abroad. Neale is best known as a hymn writer and, especially, translator; with many ancient and medieval hymns translated from Latin and Greek. We have chosen Christmas time to publish this brief article about his life because his most enduring and widely known work is his contribution to the Christmas repertoire, most notably, “Good Christian Men, Rejoice” and his original now legendary Boxing Day carol, “Good King Wenceslas”. So when you next look at Sackville College remember carols which were “born within” have since been disseminated across the country and more widely the world.

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row
