A Dangerous Novelty?

Ushering in the Age of Electricity Discover the history of electricity at Standen in a brand-new exhibition. This revolutionary yet initially mysterious and somewhat dangerous technology was embraced by the wealthy who could afford to dabble in the unknown, this included Mr and Mrs Beale along with their architect Philip Webb who built Standen in the 1890s.

But was this cutting-edge technology all it was made out to be?

House manager Ruth Howard explains, “We were inspired to tell this story because it is such an important element of Standen’s innovative history. One of the first ever houses to be designed for electricity from the very onset, this bold forwardlooking decision was down to the owners and avantgarde architect. It is easy to

Hornby at the Bluebell Railway

The Bluebell Railway was right on track when a toy train manufacturer, Hornby, was looking for a site to film a promotional video.

A film crew recently came to the Bluebell’s Sheffield Park station to shoot scenes on platform 1 and then on board a train as it journeyed through the beautiful Sussex countryside.

The video’s storyline has a retro feel with the Bluebell scenes depicting a couple in 1940 with the woman giving her departing soldier boyfriend a model loco as a gift, not knowing if she will see him again.

The video is the latest in a long line of films, TV programmes, advertisements and photoshoots to choose the Bluebell Railway as a backdrop. The 11-mile railway, which runs from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead, has featured in the Downton Abbey TV series, The Woman in Black film, episodes of Poirot and a TV version of The Railway Children.

The sequence lasts for approximately 50 seconds and forms part of a six-minute video which was published last month to coincide with the launch of Hornby’s 2020 catalogue of products.

Chris Knibbs, Bluebell Railway filming manager, said: “This year is an important anniversary for both of us as the Bluebell celebrates its 60th anniversary of operation and Hornby marks 100

of “celebrating 100 years since Frank Hornby built his first model locomotive and the journey you have all taken with us”.

The video is called “More Than Just A Hobby . . . A Lifetime’s Journey” and can be viewed on YouTube with the Bluebell scenes from 0.40 to 1.27.

Bluebell train services resume on Saturday 15th February, with children aged 15 and under paying a £1 fare when travelling with a full-paying adult as part of ‘Kids for a Quid’ during halfterm week.

Later in the year, the railway’s 60th anniversary celebrations, ‘Steaming Through 60’, will be held on 7th – 9th August.

REAL GOOD FOOD Local cook Iona Fraser, brings us her take on food with two delicious recipes for perfect Winter nourishing food, she explains: When I say real food, what comes to mind?

For me, it is nostalgic… ancestral. A harking back to a time before industrial processing, when life (and food) was a little slower.

I set up ‘Broth and Butter’, an online group, with the intention to create a community around that feeling, to encourage people to share ideas, information, recipes and excitement around good food, cooked from scratch.

You will never find anything in my recipes more processed than flour, or sugar, and the only ‘cheats’ will be time or energy-savers.

Here are some recipes you might like to try:

Roast Partridge with brown butter pearl barley risotto and salt baked celeriac This recipe sounds more complex than it is, and you could always swap out the salt baked celeriac for roasted veg cubes, or just some greens. It is written as dinner for 2 but is easy to double, and brings a real sense of restaurant Lux to your kitchen with minimum fuss.

Ingredients: • 2 x Partridge (Many rural butchers are also Game dealers, give them a call!)

• Fresh bay leaves • 100ml sloe gin (port would also work) • 1oz of butter • 5 oz of pearl barley • 3 oz butter • A small glass of white wine (I used dandelion wine from last year, but any decent white is fine) • 1 pint of warm chicken (or other fowl) stock • 1 large onion • 2 sticks of celery (or alexanders stems in season) • 1 celeriac • 6 egg whites • 8 oz of fine salt

Preheat your oven to Gas 6 (200C). Start with the celeriac. Give it a good wash, and place it on a baking tray lined with parchment.

Whisk your egg whites until stiff, then fold in the salt, to form a thick paste. Pack it all around the celeriac, making sure to leave no gaps, and pop in the oven for 3.5 hours or until a skewer goes through the middle without resistance. Take it out and put it to one side, it’s salt cocoon will keep it lovely and warm!

It may seem extravagant to use so many egg whites for one side dish, but the results are to die for, and you can use the yolks in the custard pudding below.

Once the celeriac is out, turn the oven up to gas 7 (220 C), and put 2 oz of

butter in a medium pan, on a medium high heat. The butter will froth, then turn golden brown, with the most sensational caramel smell.

At this point pour it into a bowl, add the remaining butter and the diced onions and sliced celery/alexanders to the same pan and turn down to low. These need to saute until they are soft and translucent.

While these are cooking, pop your partridges into a cast iron frying pan (or the base of a tagine, anything that is safe for the oven and the top is ok) and rub them with butter. I always use good unpasteurised salted butter.

Season with a little salt and pepper pop a few fresh bay leaves in and around, and slide them straight into the hot oven, set a timer for 10 mins to baste, and then another 10/15 until golden brown. When they are done you will lift them out, put them upside down on a plate and cover with foil.

While the partridges are cooking, cook your risotto.

wine and turn up to medium.

Stir until it is all absorbed, then begin to add your stock, a little at a time, stirring as you go. Once about ¾ of your stock is absorbed, taste the barley to see if it is done, grains should be tender.

When it is done, add the brown butter, season to taste and cover to rest.

When you are ready to serve, put the partridge pan back on the heat and pour in any juices that have escaped the birds, then add your sloe gin and blast with heat until reduced by around half.

Spoon the risotto onto the plates, sit your bird on top.

Break the top off the celeriac and scoop out with a spoon and plate. Any celeriac leftovers make a sensational soup or puree!

The lovely thing about this recipe is all the components will keep warm for a little while so no pressure! I have served with black truffle and wood blewits as I had been foraging, but just as it is, is perfect winter comfort food.

Start by making your apple compote. Put the butter in a saucepan on a medium to high heat, until it froths and then turns brown. Add the apples and sugar, and cook out until the liquid from the apples evaporates and leaves you with gooey caramel-y apples.

Remove from the dish to a cooling rack until cool, then put in the fridge until fully cold (around 4 hours).

Around half an hour before serving turn out onto a plate by putting a plate on top, turning over and shaking!

Serve at room temperature with crumbled flapjack if you like, or just as it is for comfort.

Some days custard really is medicinal…

Place the dish in a large Mix the milk and cream and add the bay leaves. Bring to just simmering over a medium heat and then turn off. In a mixing bowl whisk together the eggs and yolks, sugar, salt, yoghurt and brandy. Slowly pour in the cream mixture through a sieve, whisking all the time, then very slowly pour over the apples.

Ingredients I have made this as one big dessert because I love the communal dive-in-ability of it, but you could equally make it in individual ramekins. Just adjust the cooking time down by around 15 mins.

East Grinstead’s Fairtrade Fortnight from 10-4pm - come along and see the goodies on sale and find out more about the work of your local group, the Fairtrade Foundation and Tradecraft.

Along with cities, towns and villages throughout the country, Fairtrade EG will be celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight 2020 from 24th February until 8th March. These two weeks are a fantastic opportunity to learn about Fairtrade and share the stories of the people who grow our food and drink - from coffee, fruit juice to bananas and chocolate. Our banners will be flying on churches, schools and in the town, this highlights an astounding 25 years of the Fairtrade mark or logo!

Fairtrade is about producers and farmers in the developing world receiving a decent, steady wage for goods, even when world markets fluctuate.

By buying products with the Fairtrade logo people help the developing world to have a better way of life. East Grinstead has been a Fairtrade town since 2005 (one of the first in Sussex) and is supported by the Town Council.

Last year, fairtrade groups,

community groups, churches and schools across the country campaigned against unfair trade in the chocolate industry. This year the campaign continues to make sure cocoa farmers receive enough money to lead a dignified life, and focuses especially on the unique role women farmers play in the journey to living incomes, and sharing new stories and tools to get more people choosing Fairtrade chocolate. The fairtrade Foundation travelled back to Côte d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone, to meet some truly inspiring women, and their families, who want their stories to be heard by the UK. Moat Pond’s New Lease of Life

Nathan White, Cllr Julie Mockford at Mid Sussex applauds award in which Nathan came joint second in the young volunteer category

Three years ago, seventeenyear-old local lad, Nathan White witnessed an awful mass fish death at Moat Pond, near Kings Centre, caused by low oxygen levels. At the time he spoke to Cllr Julie Mockford and former Cllr Norman Mockford about his concerns, remembering how he always used the pond growing up, so it was a shame to see it in this state. Both left contact details for any future concerns. The next year,

Nathan commenced studying ‘Fisheries management’ at Plumpton College and wondered if he could transfer his new-found knowledge to better the pond. Going over his ideas with the Mockfords, a meeting with MSDC officers and district councillors was set up. Nathan was asked to draft a management plan, which is being made formal and implemented, leading up to the present, where it is part of East Grinstead in Bloom.

So far, the feedback has been great with people commenting on how widening the paths has helped and how good it is to see a new lease of life at moat pond. The team looks forward to working with local companies to add new benches or receiving help provide equipment to allow us to improve the pond further. With that in mind, Nathan, along with the Mockfords, initiated the Moat pond working group. The purpose is to create Moat Pond as an area for the community to enjoy and be part of once again. To allow access to all and keep it looking great, clearing areas to enjoy the scenery from various angles and allow the wildlife there to thrive and flora and fauna to bloom!

GROOMBRIDGE PLACE Extracted from ‘Groombridge Past’ by Barbara Maidment, with grateful thanks for permission to reproduce.

The first house was built in the thirteenth century and the present house is the third to stand on this site.

Groombridge Place today is a tranquil, mellow house surrounded by the still waters of its ancient moat. Its history, which is largely the story of its various owners, begins twelve centuries ago.

Whilst the remains of mesolithic and neolithic inhabitation have been found at High Rocks, two miles distant, the earliest inhabitants of Groombridge were Saxon. The name ‘Groombridge’ derives from the Saxon word gromen, indicating military attendants or servants. It has been suggested that in Saxon times a guard may have been posted here to watch and defend the river crossing between the separate

kingdoms of Kent and Sussex.

The discovery in recent years of a number of Saxon artefacts close by supports this theory.

The earliest surviving record relating to Groombridge is a charter of Henry III dated 1239, which granted permission to William Russell, Lord of the Manor, and his wife, Haweis, to found a chantry – a private chapel -

for the celebration of mass and the saying of prayers for the dead.

William Russell built the original manor house in the early 1230s, and surrounded it with the moat we see today. Although no known record survives of what it looked like, one can make an informed guess: built around the outside edge of the moat island, with a large central courtyard where the present house stands.

The moat, possibly a defence against roaming bands of marauders, may well have had a drawbridge in the same position as the current bridge.

John to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. He was probably granted Lordship of the Manor of Groombridge in the early 1230s; he owned other estates in Lancashire and Ireland and sat in England’s first parliament, held in Oxford in 1258.

By 1254 he’d been granted another royal charter, ‘free warren’, the right to hunt pheasant, partridge, rabbit and hare; game usually reserved for the king.

William Russell died in 1261 and the lordship of the manor of Groombridge became vacant.

It was next granted to Henry de Cobham, scion of a powerful and influential Kentish family from Cobham, near Rochester.

With the grant of lands providing income in the form of rents, came the obligation to fight in the king’s wars.

In 1281 Henry de Cobham fought under Edward I in his battles to conquer Wales.

Henry de Cobham’s military service was rewarded in 1286: a charter established a weekly Thursday market and a threeday fair every May which cemented Groombridge as a local trading centre. Both were lucrative sources of income for the de Cobhams since rents and tolls were paid to them by the craftsmen, artisans, traders and itinerant hawkers. Market and fair were held continuously up to the early years of the twentieth century.

In 1300 Henry de Cobham and his brother John marched north with Edward I, hoping to repeat the Welsh triumph by conquering Scotland. At Dumfries they laid siege to Caerlaverocke Castle, where Henry, John and two other de Cobham’s were knighted.

Henry was eventually succeeded at Groombridge by his son Stephen.

The de Clintons After the death of Stephen de Cobham in 1333, the estate at Groombridge came into the possession of Sir John de Clinton, younger brother of the William, Earl of Huntingdon. The de Clintons were another powerful family with vast estates in Kent.

They probably acquired Groombridge because of its lucrative income from rents.

Towards the end of the fourteenth century income from rents and land under cultivation were in decline throughout England. Wages and costs rose sharply, largely due to the economic effect of the Hundred Years’ War and outbreaks of plague and epidemic disease. Landowners were left beleaguered, with fields left idle for the want of labour. Such problems led many landowners to put estates up for sale. When Sir John de Clinton’s heir, his grandson William, Lord Clinton and Saye, inherited Groombridge in 1397, the annual rental income was 30s 8d, equivalent today to £620.

William, Lord Clinton sold the estate at Groombridge in the

early years of the fifteenth century.

The Wallers Thomas Waller, a landowner from Lamberhurst, purchased Groombridge from the de Clintons in the early fifteenth century. He died in 1410 and the estate was inherited by his son John.

One of Groombridge’s most famous legends surrounds John Waller’s son, Richard, who reputedly fought at the battle of Agincourt on 25th October 1415. Immortalised

by Shakespeare’s Henry V, Agincourt was one of the outstanding English triumphs of the Hundred Years’ War. Vastly outnumbered by the massed French forces, Henry’s army was hungry and exhausted after months of fighting and marching. But, in little more than three hours of savage combat, Henry’s army of deadly accurate archers inflicted a crushing defeat on the French.

As dusk fell on the carnage, the English set about the traditional gathering of the spoils of war, looting the bodies of the dead and dying French nobles. The pickings were good, since it was an obliging habit of the French aristocracy to come to battle clad in fine livery and jewels beneath their armour. It is said that during the postbattle looting, Richard Waller discovered Charles, Duke of Orleans, half-brother to the French king, still alive, one of only a handful of French noblemen to survive. Richard Waller, according to the legend, claimed the duke as his prisoner and brought him back to Groombridge where he was kept until his ransom was paid, 25 years later.

Sadly, some, if not all of this heroic story is certainly untrue. There is evidence which suggests that Richard Waller was not even present at Agincourt. Charles of Orleans was discovered alive and taken captive after the battle of Agincourt, but never imprisoned at Groombridge.

The Duke of Orleans was a great prize, having been paraded triumphantly through the streets of London

by Henry V, he was taken first to the Tower of London, and later imprisoned at Eltham, Windsor Castle, Pontefract Castle and at Stourton, in Wiltshire, among other locations. The nearest he came to Groombridge was when he was in the charge of Sir Reginald Cobham at Starborough Castle in Surrey.

The legend of Charles of Orleans’ imprisonment at Groombridge most likely arises from the coincidence that there certainly was a member of the Orleans family held captive at Groombridge.

Jean, Duke of Angoulême, a younger brother of Charles, was a boy of twelve years old when he was handed over by his older brother to Henry Beaufort as a hostage against a debt in 1412. The young duke was given into the custody of Groombridge’s Richard Waller, himself an officer of the household of the Beaufort family.

Under the traditions of medieval warfare, highranking prisoners were obliged to set the amount of their own ransom. When Charles of Orleans was taken captive at Agincourt and imprisoned in the tower he had not only to fix the price on his own head and then raise the money to pay it, he had also to continue to find the money to meet the debt to release his younger brother Jean, still a hostage at Groombridge. The financial demands of Charles’ ransom and Jean’s debt stretched the Orleans purse beyond its limits and the brothers were destined to spend many years incarcerated. They were allowed to meet at least once.

Some historical sources suggest that Richard Waller rebuilt the manor house at Groombridge and contributed to the rebuilding of Speldhurst Church with money provided by Charles of Orleans. The discovery of French coins of the period in fields between Groombridge

and Speldhurst has been offered in support of this theory, but it must be said that such evidence is circumstantial at best. Accounts of Charles’ imprisonment in England show that he could barely afford sufficient clothes to keep himself warm, let alone fund major rebuilding projects. Undoubtedly, Richard Waller would have been recompensed for his lengthy guardianship of the young Duke of Angoulême. Perhaps this source of income enabled him to undertake the remodelling of William Russell’s original manor house at Groombridge and the rebuilding of Speldhurst Church.

Towards the end of Charles’ imprisonment his financial resources were depleted, his estates in France were severely diminished and he was unable to send money for Jean’s upkeep. In one account, Jean’s valet, Collinet Goulon, is credited with raising the money to supply his master’s needs by turning his tailoring skills to the advantage of the population of Groombridge.

In July 1440, after twenty-five years’ imprisonment, most of Charles’ ransom was finally raised and his return to France negotiated. Jean was left behind, since much of the Orleans property and lands had been sold and their coffers stripped bare to pay Charles’ ransom. How many of the thirty years of Jean’s enforced stay in England were spent at Groombridge appears to be a moot point, but in 1442 he finally returned to France. His release was agreed as part of the negotiations for peace between England and France, eventually sealed by the marriage of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou.

Meanwhile, Richard Waller had been knighted and was granted, with his coat of arms, an additional crest bearing the French fleurde-lis, hanging from a walnut tree, bearing the label Huc Fructus Virtutis (Here is the fruit of courage). Whether Richard Waller was knighted for deeds at Agincourt or subsequent action in France is unclear. He was only 20 when (if ) he fought at Agincourt, and afterwards his military career in France continued to thrive. He rose in consequence, becoming bailiff of Evreux in 1426 and of

Caen in 1430. Back in England he became Master of the Household of Cardinal Beaufort, sheriff of Surrey and Sussex and, in 1437, sheriff of Kent. He died in 1462.

One of Groombridge’s most romantic legends surrounds Sir Richard Waller’s descendant, also Richard, who reputedly fell in love with Cicely Neville, wife of Richard Plantagenet and mother of Richard III. The tradition suggests that when she died in 1495, Cecily Neville was buried at Groombridge and that Richard Waller planted a hawthorn tree over her grave in the churchyard. In 1900 the tree was thought by the parish clerk to be dangerous and cut down. Miss Saint, the owner of Groombridge Place, was furious at the loss and tried to take a cutting of Richard Waller’s love-token tree. The cutting failed to take, but part of a branch from the old tree is preserved to this day and can be seen in a box fixed to the garden wall.

The story of Cicely Neville’s burial is, like the legend of the Duke of Orleans, untrue; she is buried at Fotheringay in Northamptonshire.

The charming story of the hawthorn tree is questionable too. Historical evidence does not support it, the most obvious difficulty being that there was no churchyard at Groombridge until the 1630’s.

GROOMBRIDGE PLACE CONTINUED

The ebb and flow of the tide of great events continued to wash over subsequent generations of the Waller family. In 1595 Sir Walter Waller found himself considerably outof-pocket due to Queen Elizabeth’s inefficiency in reimbursing expenses incurred by those in her service. Having supplied four men and horses for the army, then occupied fighting an exhausting and inconclusive war in Ireland, he was obliged to petition the queen for a grant of lands to the yearly value of £50, to make good the shortfall.

Sir Walter’s son, Sir Thomas Waller (born 1558), was appointed Governor of Dover Castle and in 1649 Sir Hardress Waller was a signatory of the death warrant of Charles I. Edmund Waller, the poet, maintained family connections in the locality although he never lived at Groombridge. In 1604, a year after the death of Sir Thomas Waller, the family’s long association with Groombridge came to an end when the estate was sold to its most illustrious owner, Sir Thomas Sackville.

An Artist of East Grinstead Town

East Grinstead resident, Roland gave up his job in London last July to pursue his passion of sketching and painting.

Concentrating on buildings and structures, he spends as much time as in his home-town. His 2020 East Grinstead Calendar sold out at the bookshop, a success he’s hoping to repeat this year.

Saint Valentine

He could have been three!

One saint was a Roman priest, another the bishop of Interamna (modern Terni, Italy) both buried just outside Rome – these were likely the same person. The third was said to be a saint who suffered on the same day with a number of companions in the Roman province of Africa, of whom nothing else is known. In fact, the name "Valentine" derived from valens (worthy, strong, powerful) and was a popular name of that era.

The most famous "founder" of Valentine's Day was the

Saint Valentine who defied Emperor Claudius II. At the time, Claudius had banned marriage because if you were married, you could avoid conscription or lets just say it created “problems”, legend claims that soldiers were sparse at this time so this was a big inconvenience to the emperor. The rebellious Valentine felt differently — he illegally married couples and the account mentions that in order to remind these men of their vows and God’s love, Saint Valentine is said to have cut hearts from parchment for their safe-keeping. He

Charles, Duke D’Orleans, who was famously captured in the Battle of Agincourt, features in our article about the history of Groombridge Place in this issue.
