Before

After You can only become truly accomplished at something, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing...my passion for various water features goes back to the days when my two brothers and I helped our Dad and his team design and build a number of Ponds, both large and small, on our farm in Zimbabwe. I’ve adopted an African theme in my design work, by using various size rocks in all my Ponds and Pondless Waterfalls, thus retaining that “close to nature” look, which everyone here in the UK admires and really loves about my work

“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Local A La Mode

One of our local residents is celebrating sustainable fashion in a big way on social media. Anna Kilpatrick, 47, of Forest Row, started her online Instagram account @not.needing. new just over a year ago. She now has a couple of thousand followers, people from around the world who love seeing her put-together, second-hand outfits. She has recently been featured in national media. The mum of two is a regular treasure-hunter at the Salvation Army Shop in East Grinstead and loves being asked by Sophie’s Fashion

Shop in Forest Row to feature their pre-loved designer clothes on social media. Anna has a passion for showing that it is possible for women no longer in their 20s or 30s to access fabulous style and gorgeous clothes without having a big budget. The single mum also furnished her small flat almost entirely with midcentury pieces from The Red Cross in EG and from the Forest Row amenity tip, when it was open. She found Danish sideboards and Swedish leather chairs that would have fetched hundreds of pounds with London dealers!

Valentine's Day & Lupercalia Though some historians believe that Valentine's Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14th, others believe that the holiday actually has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival called "Lupercalia," which was celebrated on February 15th in ancient Rome. Dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus, the day was celebrated by sacrificing animals and smacking women with animal hides, a practice that was believed to encourage fertility. During the festival men chose a woman’s name from a jar to be coupled with them for the duration. Often, the couple stayed together until the following year’s festival - many fell in love and married. Unlike Valentine’s Day, however, Lupercalia

was a bloody, violent and sexually-charged celebration awash with animal sacrifice, random matchmaking and coupling in the hopes of warding off evil spirits and infertility.

The Lupercalian Festival in Rome (ca. 1578–1610), drawing by the circle of Adam Elsheimer, showing the Luperci dressed as dogs and goats, with Cupid and personifications of fertility.

Top Ten Gardening Trends

The popularity of gardening continues to rise, with research by the Horticultural Trades Association showing that 2020 created another 3 million more gardeners. Now is the perfect opportunity to make your garden, no matter what its size, look its best. Gardening makes many people feel happier, healthier and more in tune with nature. Perfect. HERE ARE THE 2021 TRENDS FOR GARDENS

Best of British Native British plants create elegant and contemporary gardens. They may require less watering and less maintenance too. Plus, you’re helping to support local growers.

Bright Colours People want cheer and joy in their gardens, and an injection of colourful plants does just that. Go for bold, vibrant colours, and make your garden as colourful as you like. Retro plants such as Chrysanthemums, Asters and Dahlias are very popular right now.

Grow Your Own There’s no greater reward than growing your own fresh fruit and veg, people are increasingly conscious of where their food is coming from. Whether you have a windowsill, balcony, patio or garden, everyone can try to grow something edible. Potatoes, chillies, tomatoes, herbs and strawberries are good things to start with.

Peat Free & Eco Compost Demand for sustainable compost has been growing over the last year or so. Choosing the right compost means stronger, healthier plants and bigger, better harvests. There is a wide selection of eco-friendly, peat-free and reducedpeat composts for growing fruit and veg, to planting up containers and hanging baskets.

The classic English Cottage Garden has never gone out of fashion. It’s all about grace and charm, using traditional materials such as brick and paving, and densely planting with a mixture of ornamental and edible plants that look good and attract wildlife such as butterflies and bees too. Try planting classics such as roses, foxgloves, poppies, sweet peas and lavender, as well as vegetables, herbs and fruit.

Houseplants Houseplants have massively increased in popularity over the last few years, and retro plants that were popular in the 1970’s are definitely back in fashion right now. Research has shown that the following houseplants had the highest increases in searches in 2020, so will be very on trend in 2021: • Snake Plant • Cactus • Peacock Plant • Prayer Plant • String of Hearts

• Aloe Vera • Bird of Paradise • String of Pearls • Chinese Money Plant • Fiddle Leaf Fig

Dear East Grinstead Living readers, I hope you are all keeping well. Here are some important pointers for those thinking about making a will: Anyone with assets should have one, otherwise the state will decide who inherits your assets under the law of intestacy. • If you are single, you might want your estate divided amongst friends, relatives and charities in the proportions you want. • If you are married, don’t assume “my other half will get everything”. Brothers, sisters or parents may have a claim. Often your children have a right to part of your estate too. • If you are retired, perhaps you made a will a long time ago. It probably needs updating to include additional grandchildren or deletion of persons you no longer feel you want to benefit. • If you are living with your partner but are not married you may be treated as a single person and a surviving partner may get nothing at all. • If you are a parent, you should consider who you would like to look after your children in the event of your death by appointing a guardian. If not, a court will decide. • If you are entering into a second marriage and already have children. Not doing so could result in your new spouse receiving all or the majority of your estate. Penrose Wills can help with this and more, please call 01342 545 012, see our ad opposite.

TOP TEN GARDENING TRENDS CONTINUED

Wildlife Garden Many people are pruning and mowing less, or leaving a patch of their garden wild to create a haven for birds, bees, butterflies and hedgehogs. To encourage wildlife into your garden, add wildflowers, bird feeders, a hedgehog home or bug hotel, and leave out fresh water if you don’t have a pond. Use less artificial hard landscaping and add more plants to create a biodiversity for wildlife to thrive. Also consider adding a ‘hedgehog’ hole in your fencing to allow hedgehogs to travel in and out of gardens in search of food.

Zen Garden More so than ever, the garden will be a place to relax and escape this year. Plants such as acers, eucalyptus and bamboo will give a Zen-like feel to gardens, and expect to see contemporary metal sculptures for the garden as well as wall art.

White Garden For the ultimate in sophistication and if you want your flowers to illuminate your evenings a white garden could be the answer. A quick look at social media will show you why this is so on trend. Choose a dark backdrop, deep green foliage or a dark fence, and add some eye-catching white flowers to fill the space such as delphiniums, rhododendrons, roses or scented jasmine.

Bring the inside out Gardens are rooms to decorate, so just as you would invest in a new sofa or table for the home. Expect to see more modular furniture that can easily change depending on the number of guests. And outdoor dining is a trend that continues to increase in popularity, with people buying bigger and better BBQ’s, and even pizza ovens for their garden. With thanks to www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk.

The Mediterranean Garden Missing the Med? Bring a touch to your garden by including a selection of plants and herbs to give a laid-back vibe. Use architectural plants such as palm trees, cypress and yuccas to add height and drama. For beautiful scent plant jasmine or lavender, and add agapanthus, osteospermum or ceanothus for a splash of colour. As well as looking good they are low maintenance, requiring little watering. Plant in flowerbeds or in terracotta pots for that blue and ochre look reminiscent of Provence or Italy.

The Future of Fashion What’s in (& what’s out) for 2021 By Susie Hasler who runs Styled By Susie • www.styledbysusie.co.uk

The way we shopped for clothes had already been evolving - and the pandemic forced the shift that will see our buying habits change for good. So where do we go from here? Thankfully, when it comes to the pastime we all love, the future of shopping is bright - and it will be exciting to see what this seismic change looks like. Sustainable humanwear… Last year I predicted gender fluid fashion would be on the rise. It was - and it still very much is. In Spring, we saw designers - such as Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney - launch unisex capsules, and this will continue to filter down to the high street. Instead of focusing on sex, collections will be launched based on activities - ranges will encourage like-minded people to come together; building a community. The fallout from the pandemic will also include fast fashion. Many cheap items are only bought because they are seen as a bargain - and an item that can easily be thrown away. If browsing in-store is restricted, so will the sales of these clothes which do end up ‘costing the earth’.

Outdoor shopping malls? What we could look forward to seeing are outdoor shopping areas, pop-up market places - post- the pandemic, people will be less likely to congregate indoors. So, brands will need to get creative. Large stores could be replaced by smaller spaces; so shops could simply be a hub for collections and pickup; with the rest of the space used for digital engagement, or entertainment. Stores will need to find a way to entice people to put down their online shopping and visit a shop - something that we all love to do - and this will be by offering something

experiential, rather than rails of clothes that they no longer want shoppers to handle. Hopefully we will see a revival of the high street - more independent and crafty stores opening in smaller spaces; large, excellently designed window displays showcasing the best products, so we can leisurely gaze and imagine, without having to step foot inside. A streamlined online experience. Online shopping is already vastly popular - thanks to its convenience and the variety of ranges (plus size, tall, petite, maternity) being offered, compared to in store.

THE FUTURE OF FASHION CONTINUED

How could stores improve? A better filtering system - imagine if you could shop by your body shape (if you don’t know what you are, book a session with a stylist, such as me!) or colouring.

either next day click or collect from a nearby store, or to your home.

We will see more collaborations that allow shoppers to try on clothes from the comfort of their homes.

There are also plans for a smart mailbox - a place where you could leave items that need to be returned to a store, as well as deliveries.

This was showcased between Dior and Snapchat recently - allowing people to visualise how the brand’s new trainers would look on their feet thanks to AR technology, just by scanning a QR code. And we need improved delivery services Amy’s Top Dog Grooming

The East Grinstead

LIDO

Brooklands park once had an open-air swimming pool. A few years ago, we asked what people would most like to see back in the town. The most popular answer was the town’s lido. Here is a little history: The earliest record of swimming at Brooklands was in the late 1800’s when a local group of men (women weren’t allowed) swam in a gravelled stream which was feed by the local spring. At the turn of the last century, they enlarged the stream to make a pool, which then became home to the East Grinstead Water Rats. The open-air pool was built in the following years and had several additions such as changing rooms and a decorative fountain. The facility proved very popular as the prewar photographs show (taken in 1939 by my late cousins’ family). Crowds used the pool in great numbers as was proved on some summer nights, when the pool was open till midnight. One such case was Wednesday 8th July 1959 when a record mid-week attendance of 1326 people swam. I can recall my mother taking my late brother and myself swimming during the school holidays, taking a picnic for lunch as there was plenty of grass banks surrounding the area. The pool was used by the local school children and evenings often had visiting swimming clubs attending galas. Many of the competitors were often seen walking up out of the park, passing the police station to refuel from the Fish and Chip shop at the top of West street - my wife was one of these, as she swam for the Bexhill Swimming club.

Outdoor swimming pools were popular till the late 70’s when more towns had indoor complexes built such as what we see at Kings Centre today. It’s funny how times change as a lot more people are turning back to outdoor swimming in the now heated outdoor pools such as Guildford and the ongoing restoration of the Saltdean Lido. Outdoor swimming’s burgeoning popularity is also due to the mental health benefits as much as physical, as its purported to stimulate natural ‘happiness hormones’. The photographs show different angles of the area. And some boys clearly used the diving boards as climbing frames! Boys will be boys. By Alan Cullen

Local History Notes: C&D Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum, brings us the next installation, C&D, of her A through Z of local history. Two closely situated villages in East Grinstead Museum’s catchment area are Copthorne and Crawley Down. They are the last villages to stay together in the Worth parish council. Worth itself is now subsumed into Crawley borough council. Turners Hill gained its independence in the 1980s. On the borders of their boundary lies Copthorne Common. It was an area outside the residential centres of both villages and was the home of many itinerant and poor people, living in huts and tents, who scraped a living by making baskets and hoops. It was also the venue in the early C19th for illegal prize fighting. The bare-knuckle fights were watched by thousands of people including the Prince Regent. The most famous of these fights was the contest between Tom Cribb and the former American slave, Tom Molyneaux. Cribb won in 55 rounds.

Charles Corbett

Another village which the town museum serves is Danehill. Like Copthorne it has a thriving local history group. It was where the Corbett family lived. Charles Corbett was a local man who stood for parliament in the 1906 elections and was returned the only Liberal MP that East Grinstead has ever had. Both his two daughters were involved with the Suffrage movement in the area, together with his wife, Marie. The older daughter, Margery, became one of the leading Suffragists and went on to have a distinguished career, in her married name Corbett-Ashby. Cowden, although in the museum’s area, is actually in Kent. It is the site of a small stretch of Roman road which was unearthed by the Sussex Archaeological Society. It can be visited at

any time and is a reminder of the Roman presence in this part of England. Another result of the town lying at the confluence of four counties is that Dormansland, whose railway station, the stop before East Grinstead, was strafed by the bomber that dropped its deadly load on the Whitehall Theatre in July 1941, is in Surrey. The influence of the Earls of Dorset, are well documented elsewhere, but their presence is still evident on the High Street. The Dorset Arms is immediately recognisable as a coaching inn. The wide entrance to the now car park, once allowed stagecoaches access to the stables at the rear. East Grinstead, at the mid- point of the coaching route between London and Brighton, was which was superseded by the opening of the railway line through

2 6 LOCAL HISTORY NOTES: C&D CONTINUED a rather fancy way of spelling Powell.

Three Bridges, that runs from London to Brighton. This depressed the economy of the town and led, ultimately to the branch line, now the Worth Way, being built to link the town to this important route.

Another building which has disappeared is the cricket pavilion on West Street. The developers of this site named the roads, imaginatively. As well as the fairly obvious, Pavilion Way, the best is Dexter Drive named for the famous Sussex batsman and his favourite stroke. Moat Road was, for many years, the home of Mrs Richard Powell who, before she married, was one of the friends that was dedicated by Edward Elgar in of his Enigma Variations. She is “Dorabella”. Her house no longer exists but the small block of flats on the site is called Poell’s Court,

Christopher Road is named for one of the co-developers of the Art Deco estate which provided much needed employment for local workmen during the depression which hit the whole country between the two world wars. William Christopher was a partner in the catering firm of Letheby and Christopher which still exists today. They held the catering franchise at the Whitehall and gave a new façade to that building as well as a new road off the London Road, providing a cinema and residential houses. Sadly, the Radio Centre and the garage next to it have now been bulldozed. The grandeur of their architecture lives on in photographs.

Harold Connold is one of the town’s best photographers. In 1906 he became an assistant to Ernest Watts, a studio portrait photographer of some note. Connold, at first when he took over his employer’s business in 1926, also concentrated on portraiture, but he expanded into landscapes and views, which he turned into postcards. The museum is fortunate in having, literally, thousands of his negatives and many printed copies of images by both these talented men. They are available for public viewing in the research room at the museum, together with other photographs of the town, the surrounding countryside and villages and the people who lived and worked, locally.

The Curious Expedition 2 In September 2016 an independent computer game studio in Berlin, Maschinen-Mensch, released an absorbing adventure game called The Curious Expedition. It quickly gained a following becoming an international fan-favourite and one of the industry’s breakthrough success stories. on it seems like magic."

In 2018 the company started to think about a sequel, including a radical overhaul of the gameplay as well as a complete re-working of the visuals. The first game had a strong ‘retro’ feel due to its pixel art, but the idea now was to give its follow-up a European ‘clear line’ look in the vein of Tintin. This led them to England and East Grinstead-based illustrator, Garen Ewing, who had made a name for himself with the Julius Chancer series of adventure comics (Egmont Books), and the recent bestselling card game, The Lost

Expedition (Oprey Games) no connection to the Curious Expedition! This was Garen’s first computer game project, having previously worked almost solely in print, and involved a steep learning curve. "There's a whole host of technical limitations and parameters to take into account, but also, of course, things you can do that you can't do on paper. To see a character I've drawn, with its separate arms, legs and head, come alive after Katarina (the animator) has been at work

As well as characters, Garen had to conceive and draw villages, caves, swamps, deserts, alien technology, dice icons, pieces of equipment, inventory items, map elements, story illustrations and a whole host of animals and creatures, all in collaboration with his art director, and the driving force behind the Curious Expedition, Johannes Kristmann, who did the art for the original game. While Maschinen-Mensch's success has seen an expansion of its team of programmers, story-writers and technical artists, it is unusual for a computer game to rely on a single illustrator for so much of its visual identity, which has so far seen Garen invest over 3000 hours work into the project. "It's hard work and I've had to push my boundaries, but I've learnt so much and it's

3 0 THE CURIOUS EXPEDITION 2 CONTINUED been enormous fun. I feel very lucky to be working on such a worthwhile project with such a great team." Last year The Curious Expedition 2 won the highly regarded Gamescom 'Best Indie Game' award, and it has its full release on January 28th. It's available from the Steam store (https:// store.steampowered.com) with more information available at https://curious-expedition.com. Front Cover Painting The title of the painting is 'East Grinstead station forecourt in the mid 1950's'. The viewpoint is taken as if you were standing on the embankment of the freight line that joined the East / West line to what is now the Bluebell line, which was wiped away with the Sainsbury's supermarket building and road changes. The only part of the view that still exists today is the bridge

abutment seen under the loco, which shows that 4 railway lines ran over here. The pushpull train shown pulled by ex SECR 'H Class' tank engine, has just arrived from Three Bridges and will return there in due course. Other trains went through to Tunbridge Wells West on this line. There is film showing Dr Beeching joining a train from these upper platforms, which shows that he even cut lines that he found useful!

Prints of this painting (A3 size) are available from Matthew Cousins - email mattjcousins53@aol.com for address details, price etc.
