After You can only become truly accomplished at something, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing...my passion for various water features goes back to the days when my two brothers and I helped our Dad and his team design and build a number of Ponds, both large and small, on our farm in Zimbabwe. I’ve adopted an African theme in my design work, by using various size rocks in all my Ponds and Pondless Waterfalls, thus retaining that “close to nature” look, which everyone here in the UK admires and really loves about my work

“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

A to B of Local History by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum This year I am trying something new. Subjects for articles are getting more difficult to find, so because there are small items which are not suitable for a full-length article, I am gathering some of these together, alphabetically, every month this year, starting, unsurprisingly, with A and B. The village of Ashurst Wood has been closely associated with the town since the beginning. Several years ago, it decided that it would prefer to have its own parish council, to decide local matters. They have always had a very strong history group which has a great deal of information on its website. Among the subjects they discuss is the Abbey, an imposing white building on the left of the approach to Ashurst Wood. Built for the South African diamond millionaire, Sir Abe Bailey, (who incidentally is perfect for this article, as he is both A and B), it has been a school but is now divided into several residential apartments with magnificent
Sir Abe Bailey
views. Baldwins Hill, another village close to the town, has followed a different path. It is now subsumed into East Grinstead and is treated as part of it. Another building of note, is Barton St Mary. The house, Grade II listed, was designed for the shipping magnate, Sir G. Munro Miller, is the work of one of the most prominent architects of his time, Edward Lutyens. The house is complemented by gardens designed by the equally prominent, Gertrude Jekyll. Situated on the south side of the road to Tunbridge Wells, it has a gatehouse which is also Grade II listed - incidentally it is currently on the market at the time of print. The Sackville family’s connection to the area, are well known, but there are also links with the lesser known Abergaveney family. Kidbrooke, in Forest Row, was built in 1733, for William Neville, the 16th Baron Abergavenny. The title dates back to the Conquest, but lapsed, for lack of male heirs, on two occasions and was revived again in the early C18th. William Neville died in 1744 and his monument in St Swithun’s Church was designed by Peter Scheemaker. Some years ago, the museum had an exhibition highlighting six family businesses in the town
Portrait of Gertrude Jekyll by William Nicholson
which had survived for over 100 years. Of these, sadly, only two survive today. Fortunately, they both fit into my alphabetical theme. They are Armstrongs, wine sellers in the London road and Broadley Brothers, outfitters in the High Street. The other four have now almost entirely disappeared, except Fry’s, the butchers, which lives on under a new name, on the Lingfield Road. The other commercial loss that has occurred, is the closure of all the brickworks around the town, the most prominent was at Hackenden near Blackwell Farm. It was still producing high quality bricks into the C20th, but more mechanised methods of production forced its closure in 1956. Many people have over the centuries contributed to the life of the residents. Among them were Nicholas Bodle and his son, Thomas, who were watchmakers in the town in the C18th. There is an example of the former’s work in the museum, a long case clock, which is still working to this day. A tribute to the quality of his work.

A TO B OF LOCAL HISTORY CONTINUED
Douglas Blakiston was the Vicar of St Swithun’s between 1871 and 1908. He oversaw the restoration of the interior of the building, which started in 1974 and forced its closure for two years while the roof was being repaired. He supported the work of several Friendly Societies, who, in turn, supported many local workmen, when they were in need. He also designed the drinking fountain, given to the town by the Crawfurd family, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. The fountain still exists in the High Street, alas, minus the dolphins which were stolen years ago. One of the big occasions in the town was Bonfire night. The Bonfire boys would parade through the town with burning torches and tar barrels. The custom died out in the early C20th, unlike some other Sussex towns, for example Lewes, the tradition is carried on and draws crowds from all over the area.
town is the Bluebell Railway. Running from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park, it uses the track of the closed British rail line to Lewes. Another closed line in the town is the old St. Margaret’s Loop, which is now used as a slip road, diverting the north- south traffic away from the town centre. The old branch line, originally opened in 1855, to join East Grinstead to the mainline station of Three Bridges, is now a linear country park. It provides a very pleasant track for walkers and cyclists. However, the loss of the transport connection to Three Bridges is still regretted, especially as its closure was a direct consequence of the Beeching cuts in 1966. Ironically, Dr. Richard Beeching was a resident of the town. Many of you will have seen Harry Billing MBE, on the television. He fought on D-Day and has campaigned for years for a memorial to those who died on Omaha Beach. What you may not know is that a close relative of his, E J Billinge, was one of

the Guinea Pigs treated at the Queen Victoria Hospital for burns received in WWII. I cannot leave without mentioning the very large tract of open heathland and forest, Ashdown Forest. It has been subject of many articles in the past and does not, strictly speaking, fall into the scope of this article, but as the most visited area in the district and, given that the tower of our parish church, St Swithun’s can be seen from many a vantage point on the forest, it deserves acknowledgment as a major influence in our lives. Our historic mediaeval High Street was constructed from oak trees that grew there. It is truly part of the heart of East Grinstead.

page in 1926, together with friends Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore – all named after toys owned by Christopher Milne (aka Christopher Robin). The meteoric rise of the popularity of Pooh is rarely mirrored. Disney later gave the timeless character indelible, worldwide fame on film.
How best to mark the day? • A scrumptious indoor picnic (don’t forget the pot of honey) and be sure to bring along any Pooh character toys. For those really going for it, come dressed as your favourite character. • Read aloud Pooh stories. • Learn about the history of Pooh including AA Milne and the original Winnie, the black bear of London Zoo.
• Watch a Pooh cartoon or film. • Read out your favourite Pooh quotes during the picnic and/or share on social media.
If Scotland has ‘Burns Night’ to look forward to and get them through the short, cold days of January, perhaps it’s time for Sussex to fully embrace the celebration of Winnie the Pooh Day on the 18th of January, as its own. Where better to start such a movement than here, in Pooh Country. The celebration is on AA Milne’s birthday who was born in 1882. Its origins are uncertain, but it started gaining definite traction among international fans from the early noughties and from the beginning of the ‘twenty-tens’ it’s been recognised by mainstream news outlets and other official-type national-days websites – we are sure some Pooh devotees have been celebrating longer. Winnie the Pooh first appeared on the printed
• And, because you CAN, visit Pooh Bridge (if it’s reopen) for a game of Poohsticks, followed by a visit to Pooh Corner (check website for details beforehand). • Finally, be very proud that the world famous Pooh was born here in Pooh Country, in Sussex where you live.

TOWN MAYOR At a virtual annual town council meeting last year, Cllr John Dabell was elected Mayor of East Grinstead. John and his family have lived in East Grinstead for just shy of 30 years and was originally elected to EGTC in February 2014. In his time with the council, he has held various roles including Chairman of Planning.
CRY. In March 2004, John’s 26-year-old son, Adam, tragically and without any warning collapsed and died whilst playing in a local fivea-side tournament with his friends. He was 26. Every year Adam’s family and friends hold a memorial football match between the town’s two secondary schools sixth forms. At that match each year, voluntary contributions are collected for C.R.Y. – Cardiac Risk in the Young.
This new year John will seek to raise funds for two charities with a local impact, plans are in the pipeline and more will be announced in the coming months. These charities are:
CRY was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of undiagnosed heart conditions, that can lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD); Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS, SADS), in the young.
St. Catherine’s Hospice. A treasured local charity dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people and their families, friends and carers, in Mid Sussex and south-east Surrey. For over 25 years they have been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge (www.stch.org.uk). We hope you can, where possible, support John’s charitable efforts in the year ahead.

PORTRAITS FOR NHS heroes
Local portrait artists Sheri Gee and Helen Stone put their talents to great use earlier this year, painting NHS staff as part of an initiative set up by artist Tom Croft. His offer of a free portrait to the first NHS worker to contact him on Instagram quickly snow-balled with Tom pairing up some 500 would-be sitters with professional artists before the idea went viral with painters all over the country offering free portraits via the hashtag #portraitsfornhsheroes. In response, Helen painted nursing family Vitor and Claudia Gomes while Sheri painted Staff Nurse Alfred Gonzales in full PPE. Both went on to create second portraits with Sheri painting an anaesthetist and intensive care doctor from Glasgow and Helen choosing local nurse Deb Chart. ‘It was an absolute pleasure to be able to give back, to salute the hard work and dedication of all NHS workers around the country,’ says Sheri. The artists currently have paintings featured in the online exhibition Healthcare Heroes on Google Arts & Culture, and both are featured in a new Portraits for NHS Heroes book published by Bloomsbury.
The book shows portraits by more than 300 artists along with some of the sitters’ stories and is a moving tribute to our incredible frontline workers. ‘It really is testament to the courage and resilience these people have shown on a daily basis on our behalf,’ adds Helen. The book makes a beautiful gift and a portion of the RRP of £25 goes to NHS Charities Together. See more of Sheri and Helen’s work at www. sherigee.com and www.helenstoneart.com

THE POLITICIANS VS T H E S TA G E
A cricket match held to support Sackville College One Sunday afternoon in September 1955, a cricket match took place at East Court. Whilst this might be a fairly standard occasion, which played out across the country each summer, this was different. It featured two very unique teams: politicians and stars of the stage and screen. The match was a special fundraiser for Sackville College, organised by its patron, the 9th Earl De La Warr. The college was in dire need of repairs and improvements, with costs quoted in the local press by the Warden, Sir Harry Sinderson, as around £6000. Earl De La Warr had been inspired whilst watching a village cricket match one August day, and immediately set to work to recruit players to his proposed match in September - before autumn set in. At best, the whole event was organised in only six weeks! The Earl split his personal contacts into those with political roles and connections, and stars of stage and screen. The politicians team included: • Harold Macmillan, the then Foreign Secretary, who lived in nearby Chelwood Gate, • Gwilym Lloyd George, the Home Secretary and younger son of First World War Prime Minister David Lloyd George, • Viscount Kilmuir David Maxwell Fyfe, the Lord Chancellor. He wrote about the event
in his memoirs, and claimed that he was the only Lord Chancellor to score a four from Denis Compton, • Sir Walter Monckton (Minister of Defence),

2 2 THE POLITICIANS VS THE STAGE CONTINUED • The Earl of Selkirk (the Paymaster General), • Viscount Gage (who lived in nearby Firle Place near Lewes), • Lord Hawke (about whom not much is known), • Lieutenant-Colonel Walter BromleyDavenport (MP for Knutsford, who was renowned for his loud voice), • Earl de la Warr himself as the captain. The politicians also included two members of the Sussex County Cricket team, Mr G Doggart, and Mr G Cogger. On the other hand, the stars of the stage were made up of: • John Mills, the captain, (whose acting credits could fill many pages, and was on a return to form in 1955), • Richard Attenborough (who was then just an actor, but would be just as famous as a director/producer), • Douglas Fairbanks Junior, (who was living in Britain at the time, but whose career started in 1930s Hollywood), • Leo Genn (a star of stage and screen, who was most famous for his Oscar nominated role as Petronius in Quo Vadis), • Rex Harrison (again, famous for many stage and screen roles including Doctor Dolittle, and Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady), • Richard Hearne (most famous for his role as Mr Pastry, a comic character with a trademark walrus moustache), • David Niven (again, his acting credits would fill many pages), • John Slater (a local who worked at the Whitehall), • John Underdown (likely another local, but it is not clear). They also included two professional cricket players: J. Warr of Middlesex, and Batsman Denis Compton of Middlesex and England.
The Earl De La Warr was also able to use his connections to help publicise the event, even if, as recalled by Lord Kilmuir, this largely involved he, his soon to be second wife Sylvia and his daughter Miranda handing out handbills at the many pubs and post offices of East Sussex. Of equal importance were the contributions of many local people and businesses including 600 deck chairs from the Sussex County Cricket Club, competition cricket bats and balls from A&C Bridgeland, and a cartoon drawn for the programme by Guinea Pig Club member Henry Standen. The match was very popular, attracting a huge crowd, and even a film crew who recorded it for British Pathe. Today these films are available to view on Youtube, with a highlight being the commentator, who seemed shocked that Denis Compton would be at East Grinstead at all! On the stage team, the film captures several highlights, including a dropped catch by Richard Hearne (dressed as Mr Pastry), and an unfortunate fielding injury caused by the ball to Richard Attenborough, who was taken away under the care of local surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe. Other highlights of the day included Harold MacMillan’s cardigan, which as recalled by Lord Kilmuir, Macmillan’s wife had sworn had been sent to a jumble sale and returned unsold! The politicians set a score of 178 runs (the Sussex player Doggart top scored with a 50), but the stage team were unable to reply, as the great British weather prevented them from batting due to rain. The game was therefore a draw, but the real winner was the Sackville College, who raised a lot of money with the event. Copies of the programme created for event are held within the museum’s collection, including one which had the politician’s scores recorded onto it. My thanks go to Sue Casson and Robin Whalley, whose extract of the memoirs of Lord Kilmuir published on the Sackville College website were vital to providing some stories of the players on the day. The British Pathe video on youtube is worth a mere 90 seconds of your time. Jonathan Parrett, EG Museum

Getting your Resolution Game on Need a few ideas for those pesky but important New Years resolutions Hopefully we can give you a few – or at least a couple. Here goes: Put aside savings. Make a vow to save in 2021. Budgeting can go far but even if that’s too much, just decide on a set amount each week/month. The key thing is to put it ‘out of arms reach’ in an account that you ‘almost’ can’t access. Sometimes it works to give it to a parent for safekeeping. Cook one new thing each week. It’s become clearer in recent years that a variety of food is also key to good health. The ideal is having a ‘rainbow’ of vegetables on your plate. With or without this, taking the time to try at least one new recipe each week can broaden your scope of ‘go-to’ recipes and may be a welcome change for the family…after all, variety is the spice of life. Read more books. January is the perfect time to snuggle up with a new book. If its more of an effort and the various screens just demand all your attention, try to commence your book during a moment of digital detox – hopefully you’ll then get stuck into a good yarn. Try to eat more veggies regularly. If you’re not keen on veg, try different ways to cook it. Stir frying with soya sauce is still better than having no veggies…it might be time to get inventive. Whether slimming down or getting healthy, vegetables are your friends.
Change at least one trip a week to walking instead of taking the car. Exercise and fresh air help the mind and body and well worth that bit of extra time. Taking in nature is always a good idea – wrap up snug during the colder days and try not to use the cold as an excuse.
Book in a set time for a digital detox every week. Some people take Sunday off, but even if it’s just a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon, have some time out.

2 6 GETTING YOUR RESOLUTION GAME ON CONTINUED Add to your plant collection. The benefits of plants both indoor and outdoor can’t be over-estimated. As well as beautifying the house and garden, they provide extra oxygen and are known to have a subliminally calming effect. Increase your water intake Have a big water bottle you fill at the beginning of the day, squeeze a little lemon juice if needed for taste. Have it by your side throughout the day and sip on it whenever you can. This is better than drinking loads in one go, as it doesn’t go straight through you. Reduce clutter. The best weapon in your cleaning arsenal is de-cluttering. Chuck, chuck, chuck. Some people find it easier than others. The best way is to set aside a space of time and go through cupboards, drawers etc. If something seems too valuable to chuck away and/ or has further use, you can always give it away on a FB selling site or a charity shop. But be disciplined and get it out the house. Then keep anything that shouldn’t be on surfaces put away in cupboards. This will make the whole cleaning experience a million times quicker and much easier to maintain during the week. A good reward at the end of a resolution-achievement always helps the mental inertia barriers… chocolate works well for me, but for January I may have to choose a healthier reward option!

What to do with your Christmas Tree? Add pine needles to a bowl to give your home a wonderful scent
Tradition has it that we take our Christmas tree down on the Twelfth Night (12 nights after Christmas Day), which is either the 5th or 6th January, depending if you’re counting Christmas Day or Boxing Day as night one. But regardless of when you take your tree down, what’s the best thing to do with it? •
Use the tree as a stake – strip off the pine needles and use the tree as a fantastic frame for flowers or runner beans to grow up.
•
Use the branches – lay branches on top of your flowerbeds to protect them from frost.
•
•
•
•
Create a wildlife habitat – put your tree or branches in the corner of your garden and it will make a great shelter for wildlife from the cold, wind and rain. Make a bird feeder – place your tree in a heavy pot in the garden so that it doesn’t tip over, and hang different bird feeders on the branches to attract wildlife into your garden. Turn it into a natural air freshener – pluck out the pine needles and add them to a bowl of potpourri to give your home a wonderful scent. Get creative – slice the wood into rustic coasters, create candle holders or a tealight log.
•
Use on a firepit – chop up the branches, wait for them to dry out, then use as firewood in an outdoor fire pit. Don’t use the wood indoors as it can get extremely hot.
•
Recycle it – see what schemes your local council are running. Many will collect your tree from your road so there’s no need for that trip to the dump.
With thanks to www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Super stew & dumplings recipe
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •
2 tsp vegetable oil 280g braising steak, cut into chunks 450ml vegetable or chicken stock 2 medium onions, chopped 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 carrots, cut into chunks 2 celery sticks, sliced 1 bay leaf 250g closed-cup mushrooms, halved 100g self-raising flour 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped 50g spread or butter 1 pinch ground black pepper
METHOD 1.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large flameproof casserole dish or saucepan. Add the beef, a handful at a time, and cook over a high heat for about 2 to 3 minutes until sealed and browned.
2.
Pour the stock into the pan, then add the onions, garlic, carrots, celery, bay leaf and mushrooms. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat. Cover and cook over a low heat for 90 minutes, checking the liquid level from time to time, and topping up with a little water if needed.
3.
To make the dumplings, sift the flour into a bowl and add the parsley and some black pepper. Add spread or butter to the flour, then rub in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like fine crumbs. Add just enough cold water (about 2 tablespoons) to make a soft dough. Knead the dough lightly for a moment, then form into 12 small dumplings.
4.
Add the dumplings to the stew, letting them sit on the surface. Cover and cook for another 25 to 30 minutes, until the dumplings are light and fluffy, then serve.
Let’s help to keep East Grinstead a Safe Place for everyone. “Safe Places” is a national initiative that aims to establish a network where anyone feeling vulnerable or unsafe, young or old, can seek assistance. Individuals can sign up to the scheme, which will issue them a card with their name and their emergency contact numbers. This card is handed over at a Safe Place venue, where a phone call can then be made to the contact number and ask that they collect the person. It’s that simple! Businesses and organisations can also sign up to the scheme. All those employed at the Safe Place will receive safeguarding training. So, whoever you are and whatever your circumstance you know that, if you need it, help is always just around the corner.
