For some local history see our “Hammerwood Park” article complete with gorgeous pictures. There is tons of information to plan days out in the summer holidays, see page 26 & 27. Here’s some feedback from our local rotary club after we promoted their “End Polio Now” campaign in an earlier edition: “I just wanted to thank you again for the excellent coverage you gave the Rotary campaign to eradicate polio from our world. Our fund raising over the week reached in excess of £9,000. I believe many people had seen the publicity of what we are doing, particularly through your publication, and could not have been more generous. Best wishes, Chris,The Rotary Club of East Grinstead Meridian”

In the late 1940s, John George Haigh of Crawley drank the blood of his 6 known victims and then dissolved the bodies in a bath of sulphuric acid. In 1820 Doctor Gideon Mantell found the first known iguanodon fossils close to Cuckfield at Whitemans Green, where a monument to him now stands. Your local RSPCA
Since 1840 the RSPCA has been rescuing and rehabilitating mistreated animals and is only able to carry out this work thanks to the generous support and donations from the public. At RSPCA South Godstone re-homing centre, a fundraising group called ‘The Friends of the RSPCA South Godstone Animal Centre’, or Friends for short, have been working hard to raise funds for the centre for many years. It is an independent charity whose principal source of income is from a charity shop run by volunteers in Caterham. All the money they raise goes directly to caring for the animals at the centre and this year they are funding work on two new buildings. Work will shortly commence on a specially designed rabbit building. Recent visitors will know that our rabbits have been staying in kennels; whilst it gives them lots of space to run around, the new layout will provide a more comfortable and suitable home for the
rabbits while they are with us. The Friends of South Godstone are also building a separate isolation block for our cats. At the moment anything contagious, like cat flu, can spread quickly through the cattery, risking the lives of vulnerable cats, for example kittens. Having another unit will mean we can isolate sick cats and use the current isolation cubicles for newly arrived cats. Without public donations our work of caring for animals would not be possible. If you would like to help support our work, or are interested in adopting an animal, please contact the Centre on 0300 123 0741 or visit our website www.rspcafriendsofsouthgodstone.org.uk. th Please also join us on Sunday 18 July from 10.30am – 4.00pm for our annual Fun Day & Dog Show; we look forward to seeing you. Fran lost 5 stone in 5 months and three years later is maintaining her weight Over three years ago, I was 5 stone overweight and felt continuously tired. I was faced with having to take medication for the rest of my life to handle my cholesterol as it was dangerously high. I was desperate to find a way to lose my weight.
Jan 07
May 07
May 10
Two of my friends had lost their weight with Rachel and I was very inspired by their results. Having tried so many different ways of losing weight, I felt going to Rachel was my last chance. I started my weight loss program in Jan 07 and within five months I had lost five stone. My cholesterol was then retested and much to my delight it was normal! This was achieved without having to take medication. My constant tiredness was replaced with an abundance of energy and other well being benefits. By following the simple guide lines for weight maintenance, it has been very easy to keep my weight off. I can only say that I am extremely happy to be the same size as I was when I finished the program three years ago. The support Rachel gives for weight loss and maintenance is very personal and motivating – it would be hard to find elsewhere. I have personally known at least 20 people who have lost their weight with Rachel and have all got excellent results. My health and well being has greatly improved. Shopping for clothes is a real pleasure now. It is wonderful to be finally free from dieting - very liberating!

GARDENING • 17
Gardening Tips for JULY Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Shrubs. Summer blooming shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches. Fertilize flowering shrubs like Azaleas, Camellias and rhododendrons immediately after they have finished flowering with an ericaceous fertilizer. Deadhead the developing seedpods from your Rhododendrons and Azaleas to improve next year’s blooms. Be careful not to damage next year’s buds, which may be hidden just below the pod.
Fruit and Vegetables Fertilize June bearing strawberries after the harvest, and ever-bearing varieties half way through the season. Protect your fruit from the birds with netting. Ensure adequate watering during dry spells.
Lawns During dry spells raise the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass keeps the roots cooler and helps to preserve moisture in the soil longer. Avoid using fertilizers in hot, dry weather.

Roses Feed roses monthly throughout the summer. Spray regularly with an organic insecticide and fungicide to keep pest and disease at bay.
Miscellaneous Continue to deadhead annuals to increase flowering period. Fertilize patio containers and tubs with a general purpose liquid feed. Keep an eye out for slug and snail damage and treat accordingly.
We have Tens of thousands of Shrubs, Trees, Conifers, Camellias, Acers, Herbaceous, Climbers, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and Much, Much More Garden Tools and Accessories Loads of Bargains available at The Nursery We also sell Calor Gas

Family Crest - Seal Rings Seal Rings have been worn by men of distinction for centuries. The signet ring was originally a Seal Ring - the “mark” of a gentleman. The name “Signet” came from the Latin word signator, the person who puts his seal onto a document. The time taken on each ring and the lack of skilled craftsmen means only a few people have the opportunity to own a seal ring. To purchase a seal signet, with a crest attributed to your family name, creates for you and your family an heirloom of great interest and beauty. Many crest rings are sold as Graduation or 21st Birthday presents and to couples for the gentleman’s wedding ring. Available in Gold or Platinum, plain or stone set, most rings are in ladies and gentleman sizes. At George Knight Jewellers in East Grinstead, you can view your heraldic family crest along with a range of signet rings. A man who is not proud of his ancestry will never leave after him anything for which his posterity may be proud of him. Edmund Burke

Ladies, holiday wardrobe tips! Article written by Tessa Sturdy, Proprietor “Private Collection” East Grinstead High Street When you go on holiday, do you envy those people with hand luggage only? Do you come back with clothes still folded and unused? For a week’s holiday, you need 14 different looks at the absolute most – one for day, one for evening. That doesn’t mean 14 different outfits! Try these easy tips: ∫ Write down what you expect from your holiday. Rest and relaxation? Then just put casual clothes in. Do you like to dress up for dinner? Then add a few smart bits – maybe a black/white trouser with different tops. ∫ Lying in the sun most of the day? Then you only need a swimsuit/bikini as your daytime outfit, plus sleeved top to go over it. Maximum two of each – and try them on to make sure they still fit! ∫ One skirt/trouser for three tops. If they don’t co-ordinate, don’t take them! Remember a cardigan or pashmina in a neutral colour in case the evenings are chilly.
∫ Take dresses – they’re one item outfits and work for day and evening
∫ Shoes: flat sandal for the pool, one comfortable for trips out, heels for
the evening. Metallic colours go with everything. ∫ Jewellery – think colour – it’s summer! Lay everything out on the bed. Make at least one outfit from each piece and make sure the shoes work too. Be strict with yourself – remember there will be less to wash when you get home! Have a lovely holiday.

Hammerwood Park
Article by Simon Kerr
Built in 1792, Hammerwood Park was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, and is set with glorious sweeping views of the surrounding countryside at the point where East and West Sussex now meet. Latrobe himself later went on to fame and fortune in the New World as America’s foremost architect and the leading civil engineer of his generation. Hammerwood was one of the first examples of the style of architecture known July 2010 • East Grinstead Living
today as Greek Revival, and the house employed other innovative ideas such as the provision of running water from the surrounding estate. In 1850 the then owner John Dorien Magens was an influential member of the East Grinstead Railway Company, the town itself not yet connected to the nation’s rapidly growing rail network, the nearest stations being a coach ride away at Three Bridges and Godstone.
info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152
The house then passed through many hands until the outbreak of the second World War, when it was requisitioned by the War Department and housed around 200 soldiers, as well as being a light landing strip for aircraft ferrying agents into occupied Europe. In the straightened circumstances following the war the house was split up into flats until in the 1970’s passing into the ownership of rock group Led Zeppelin,

of Stairway to Heaven fame. Sadly Heaven was missing from the agenda as far as Hammerwood was concerned, as its new owners left for America and ‘forgot’ that they owned it! There then followed a period of rapid decline, with the building becoming derelict until it was at last rescued in 1982 by the 21 year old David Pinnegar, who has since dedicated his life
to its restoration. The house is open to the public during the summer months on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and at other times during the year for the occasional concert. Besides its exquisite architectural charm, the building also contains a remarkable copy of the Parthenon Frieze, and the work of restoration still continues. info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152
