“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Local History Notes: M&N Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum, brings us the next instalment, M & N, of her A through Z of local history.

I am now at the mid-point of this alphabetical tour of the East Grinstead area. They are, of course, the 13th and 14th letters of our alphabet and I have taken seven months to arrive at this point, leaving only five months to cover the remaining twelve letters. The reason being that there are several difficult ones to write about, coming up. I will soon have to decide whether to have two months each of three letters or one of two and the last of four. Watch this space! There are three villages in the East Grinstead Museum’s collections policy area. Newchapel, a hamlet relating to Lingfield, is known mainly for the chapel on the A22, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Two larger settlements are Maresfield and its nearby neighbour, Nutley. The latter has a thriving local history group, which regularly contributed to our, one-time, local history fairs. On one such occasion they displayed about twelve or thirteen leather shoes, found in a village house during restoration. Shoes were frequently hidden in houses as they were thought to ward off the devil and other malevolent spirits. Often placed in the chimney, near a door or other openings, which the spirit could use to gain entrance. We have a lone example in the museum found in a house in our Mediaeval High Street. A large collection, as the one discovered Nutley, is very rare.

Many well-known, or even famous, people have had connections to the town. The most prominent of these is, perhaps, the Rev. John Mason Neale, who neatly fits both letters. However, so much has been written about him elsewhere, I will not do more here than point out that he wrote or translated over 200 hymns and carols although the only one anyone remembers is “Good King Wenceslas”. Similarly, Sir Archibald McIndoe needs no further mention here. The numerous books and the Rebuilding Bodies and Souls gallery in the East Grinstead Museum supply all the information required. Herbert Musgrave, on the other hand has received little recognition for his pioneering work trying to promote the use of aeroplanes in wartime. He was the son of Sir Anthony Musgrave, an ambassador and Governor General of Queensland, in the late C19th whose name is commemorated all over the world. Look in any global gazetteer and the list of rivers, lakes mountains and other geographical features called “Musgrave” is endless. Musgrave senior is also recalled more locally, in Musgrave Avenue, in this town, although he never lived here. His widow brought their three children to East Grinstead

LOCAL HISTORY NOTES: M&N CONTINUED

following the premature death of her husband in Australia. Herbert joined the army and witnessed the landing of Louis Bleriot in 1909, after his flight across the English Channel. He was very impressed and saw the possibilities that this new form of transport could open up, in combat. However, his ideas did not find favour with his superiors and, until 1915, were largely ignored. Eventually they began to be recognised for what they were and he was transferred to the newly formed Royal Flying Corps. There he developed a system of telegraphy to relay the reconnaissance obtained by planes flying over enemy lines, to the troops on the ground. He was sent back to the army and served on the front line before being wounded and sent home to convalesce at Hurst-en-Clays, the family home. Returning to the front line again, he was mortally wounded behind enemy lines in June 1918. The ridge on which The Medway - Chatham our town is built is an important watershed. From it rivers run both north and east. The Mole arises near Crawley and goes to flow into the Thames at Hampton Court. The Medway rises between Turners Hill and Crawley Down to reach the Channel at Chatham, a once busy port. One of the frequently asked questions at the museum is, “where does the name, Mount Noddy come from?”. The real answer is the no-one seems to know. The most generally accepted theory is that “noddy” is an old name for the slag left behind the iron smelting industry which was active over this area from the time of the Romans until the charcoalburning furnaces of the Weald were replaced by the more efficient coal-fired ones in the Forest of Dean and the north. The name “Mount Noddy” can be found all over Sussex. East Grinstead has been a market town since a charter was granted by Henry III in 1247. Henry

was the son of King John, who died the year after signing the Magna Carta at Runnymede. He acceded to the throne, at the age of nine, and reigned for 56 years. He is the fifth longest reigning monarch in the British Isles after Elizabeth II, Victoria, George III, James VI & I. East Grinstead was allowed to hold a fair, annually, on July 24th and 25th. Weekly markets could also be held every Monday. The origins of Middle Row stem from this, as the buildings started life as market stalls which gradually became more and more permanent. At one time there was a movement to pull them down them to improve the flow of traffic. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and we can still enjoy their quirkiness today. Markets have come and gone since then, cattle were sold in the High Street, then later in Cantelupe Road. Now all that remains is a small farmers’ market in the High Street. The fairs also died out, but the Lions’ Mayday Fair is still well supported. Finally, the Order of Sisters, set up by John Mason Neale, was dedicated to St Margaret. There are at least two St Margarets, but the one who cared for the poor and for orphans, was St Margaret the Virgin. Born in 1046, she was a direct descendant of King Alfred. Driven into exile by the invasion of Canute, she eventually returned and went to Scotland. There, belying her title of Virgin, she married Malcolm III. One of their daughters, Matilda, married Henry I of England, thus Margaret played an important part in English history. The convent is now residential units, but Margaret’s name lives on in the town.

(ve/gf ) Serves 2

Like most of us when the weather heats up, all we want is food that is fresh and vibrant and easy to prepare!

For the Peas

• 300g fresh or frozen peas • 1 red onion • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp fresh mint chopped

Start by finely chopping the onion and adding it to a frying pan along with the olive oil. Leave to cook over medium heat for 5-10 minutes until soft. Whilst the onions cook pour a freshly boiled kettle of water over the peas just to soften them slightly. Once the onions are cooked add the peas and mint to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Turn the heat up to get the onions and peas a little crispy, then add to your bowl.

Apple Slaw • 1 large green apple

• 175g white or red cabbage • 50ml olive oil • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 tbsp agave syrup or honey • 1 tsp cumin • salt and pepper to taste

Extras: • greek yogurt (vegan or dairy) • hummus (optional) • freshly sliced sourdough or garlic bread • poached egg (optional) To make the dressing add the oil, lemon juice, agave, cumin, and some salt and pepper to a jar and give it a vigorous shake to combine, or throw all in your nutri bullet. Finely chop the apple and cabbage into small thin slices and pour over the dressing and mix well. Add the slaw to your bowl and serve with some rocket and mixed leaves. Either add a dollop of hummus or Greek vegan yogurt with a pinch of chili flakes, but a poached egg would work perfectly with this dish! Serve with slices of sourdough, or garlic bread.

Enjoy x

Anne Boleyn's

Secret Champions

Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, the beautiful Hever Castle, is on our doorstep, nestled in Kent on the Sussex border. Lovingly preserved as a window to the Tudor world, a time period that would be obsessed over by so many down the centuries. The historical fascination with the life of Anne Boleyn continues with gusto in the 21st century. Last month new research on her historic prayerbook was unveiled, shedding further light on what happened soon after her death. Research conducted into the Book of Hours prayerbooks on display in Anne Boleyn’s childhood home has revealed never seen before names and words hidden in the pages of the historic volume. Using ultraviolet light and photo editing software, it has been discovered what happened to the volume after Anne was executed in 1536 and when legend has it, she handed the book to one of her ladies. Former Hever Castle steward Kate McCaffrey spent nearly a year studying the two prayerbooks and discovered wording in the printed Book of Hours which had been undiscovered for hundreds of years. Following the demise of Anne Boleyn, despite pressure to remove all items belonging to the former queen, the prayerbook she is believed to have taken to her execution still survives. And why this beautifully illustrated prayerbook survives was revealed in Kate’s research, part of her thesis for her masters in Medieval and early modern studies at the University of Kent.

Kate, who worked at Hever Castle as a visitor experience assistant for about six years, was given special permission to look into the prayerbooks which previously was thought only to contain just one inscription. Using ultraviolet light and photo editing software she discovered three family names written in the book; Gage, West, and Shirley (from Sundridge, near Sevenoaks). These three names centre around a fourth, the Guildford family of Cranbrook in Kent.

Kate’s research uncovered that the book was passed from female to female, of families not only local to the Boleyn family at Hever but also connected by kin. She explained: “It is clear that this book was passed between a network of trusted connections, from daughter to mother, from sister to niece. If the book had fallen into other hands, questions almost certainly would have been raised over the remaining presence of Anne’s signature. Instead, the book was passed carefully between a group of primarily women who

three contain her signed inscriptions. One is held at the British Library, the other two at Hever.

“In a world with very limited opportunities for women to engage with religion and literature, the simple act of marking this Hours and keeping the secret of its most famous user, was one small way to generate a sense of community and expression.”

Kate also discovered as part of her research that a copy of the printed Book of Hours in the Morgan Library in New York belonged to Anne’s greatest rival in power and love, the Queen of England, Catherine of Aragon.

She added: “It was incredibly exciting and surreal to uncover these erased inscriptions, and it has been an absolute privilege to restore the names of their authors and recover their stories. What is perhaps most remarkable is that these inscriptions have been unknown and unstudied for so long.”

has potentially highly significant implications for our understanding of Anne Boleyn and her posthumous reputation.”

Dr David Rundle, Kate’s supervisor said: “It is every graduate student’s dream to uncover previously hidden information about a wellknown historical figure. Kate’s energy and enterprise have allowed her to do just that, even in the depths of the pandemic when libraries were out of all researchers’ reach. What she has discovered

The book, which she may have taken to her execution, bears the touching inscription, “remember me when you do pray, that hope dothe led from day to day”.

Hever Castle has on display two illuminated Book of Hours prayerbooks, belonging to Anne Boleyn, which she had written in and which bear her signature.

Only a handful of Anne’s books survive today and only

As this goes to press “The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family!”, three-part docudrama, will shortly be shown on BBC 2. Dr Owen Emmerson, assistant curator of Hever Castle, makes several contributions. Hever will play a prominent role and I’m sure many readers will find it a fascinating watch.

We believe our strength is a high level of community participation in producing

Wildhart Radio may have been created in a crisis but together we are creating something special.

pe

Wildhart Radio was conceived in lockdown last year; a phoenix from the flames. Communities recognised the need to support one another virtually, reach out to those who were lonely, support local business and do what we could. We want to showcase local talent, creativity and have fun. To bring together all ages, opinions, skills and life experiences. To use freedom of expression, freespeech, diversity, inclusion and represent the uniqueness of Forest Row.

programmes to learn technical skills, interviewing techniques, editing, research and other aspects of running a radio station. We believe that building this project with the community will make it sustainable, rooted, and give a sense of shared ownership.

Co

Wildhart Radio is a new and exciting project with a dream. A non-profit, community radio internet-based station aiming to provide a platform and a voice to Forest Row and the surrounding areas. We are a grassroots service aiming to showcase local creative talent, celebrate our unique diversity and offer a way to bring our community together. Radio can be courageous and provide live cutting-edge music, drama, comedy, free speech, wellbeing, and up-to-the minute local news.

Goodbye loungewear Hello glamour What we’re all wearing post-lockdown (and how to wear it with confidence). Lounging in loungewear, or lazing in joggers… we’ve all struggled to get ourselves motivated to get dressed over the past year.

Fast forward to now and, as we’re getting out and about far more, what does it mean for our wardrobe? Here local, East Grinstead based, award-winning stylist Susie Hasler, who runs www.styledbysusie.co.uk, helps you get dressed post-pandemic.

Don’t wave them goodbye completely. Loungewear, joggers, hoodies, sweatshirts will remain in the shops but as of the summer, this style will no longer be a priority in our wardrobes. Even those who used to love “comfy days” in loungewear, are getting fed up with it now and are keen to get into smarter clothing, and this will mean dressing up our casual clothes.

Smart casual for the office

Leave the loungewear behind Loungewear sets boomed during lockdown. If you weren’t a fan of joggers pre2020, chances are you now own more than a pair or two.

Jeans with a blazer, a skirt with flats and a denim jacket, a shirt with brightly coloured wide legs. These are all styles we’ll see as we transition from working from home to the office. T-shirts with pretty sleeves, and lots of accessories - sunglasses, masks, bag and jewellery to jazz up your new office uniform. We will also be wearing brighter colours and

patterns to subconsciously celebrate a move out of lockdown. Don’t save for best Whether it was a dinner date, wedding or a party, most of us had a tendency for saving certain items of clothing for “best” before the pandemic hit. With so many events and occasions cancelled last year (even Christmas) we have

The mentality for many has been ‘if no one’s going to see me, what’s the point?’.

26 learnt that we don’t know what’s around the corner. It’s given us a more carefree, seize-the-day attitude when it comes to clothing. Make up for lost time! Expect to go big and glam even for casual pub dates with friends, with more effort going into outfits, and dressier pieces being worn. The eyes have it We don’t yet know whether face masks will be phased out, but I can see many of us opting to wear them for a while longer yet. Many of my clients have spoken about how they have now perfected their eye makeup skills during the past year, watching YouTube tutorials

© lorealparisusa.com and opting for brighter, bolder eyes. And they’ve stepped away from brighter lips. However, the moment masks can go for good, expect a burst of colour on our lips as we finally get to show them off without the smudge risk!

© johnlewis.com

Buy what you need The past year has taught us that we don’t need wardrobes bursting with clothes that we perhaps have only worn once or twice. We can very much operate a needs-based style. This will continue post-pandemic. I advise my clients to shop in a more aware way - will that item go with three or more things you already have in your wardrobe? Avoid impulse buys - chances are you don’t need those bright red quirky heels. And avoid the sales - there’s a reason it didn’t sell, right? Wear it with confidence Figures show some women

are anxious about lockdown restrictions easing because they’ve put on weight over lockdown. With gyms being closed and many of us working from home, many of us have felt our clothes getting tighter. Many of my clients have told me they’re feeling nervous about socialising again. My advice? There are many ways to boost confidence that don’t involve changes in weight. Firstly, let’s all congratulate ourselves for getting through the past year. To feel your best, practice with new makeup colours to make your eyes pop. Treat yourself to a few new, carefully selected items of clothing; if you have to go up a size, remember no-one knows what size your label says. If you wear something that fits well and makes you feel happy, you will shine with confidence. To book an online style session with Susie see www.styledbysusie.co.uk

Turn your garden into a

Pollinator Paradise Our gardens are an increasingly important habitat for wildlife. There are so many amazing creatures just outside our back doors, and every garden, no matter what size, can be a haven. You can attract more birds, butterflies, bees and insects into your garden by following these simple steps:

• Choose Insect-Friendly Plants – Nectar-rich single flowers with bright colours will help attract bees and butterflies. • No Mow – Leave an area of your garden unmown or mow less frequently and let the grass grow a little longer to encourage wildflowers and insects. • Add Water – A pond, water feature, bird bath, or even just a small bowl of water will help attract wildlife into your garden. • Create Shelter – Add a log pile, bird box, hedgehog home or a house for bugs and insects.

These insect-friendly plants will turn your garden into a pollinator paradise.

Lupins

Verbena This popular plant has compact clusters of lilac-purple flowers. It blooms all summer long, and pollinators love its rich nectar.

Cosmos

makes for an elegant addition to your border, displaying a profusion of striking flowers. Plant in full sun and protect from strong winds.

Foxgloves

Choisya ternate

An excellent source of nectar for bumble bees, moths and honey bees. They are great for adding height and beautiful colour.

Beloved by bees, these sweetly scented white flowers will often flower twice. Plant in a sunny position in moist, welldrained compost.

THE RUDE MECHANICALS

OUTDOOR THEATRE IN HARTFIELD! On Wednesday, July 28th, the wonderful Rude Mechanicals are planning to perform on the Croft, Hartfield.

It will be something to give us a good laugh and raise our spirits. The play will be ‘Little Lily Harley’, postponed from last year, and is about Charlie Chaplin’s childhood in Lambeth. With a drunken but charismatic actor father who was rarely around & a beautiful young actress of a mother who had three children by different fathers, he had to learn alongside his big brother Sydney how to survive a very

precarious existence. Sometimes fostered by other people, sometimes in a school for destitute children, sometimes separated from Sydney and sometimes living on the street (as a child) he nevertheless managed to triumph over all this to become arguably the greatest film actor ever. Pete Talbot, the director, says, “When I wrote the play in 2019, I could not have known how apt it would be for today. The message of hope, triumph over pain, through the imagination and laughter, is really important for today because people are desperate to see theatre and escape for a while. That is why we must do it.” Tickets are available online from The Rudes website, therudemechanicaltheatre.co.uk or speak to Nicola Squire on 01342 850474 or email: nicolasquire@hotmail.co.uk. Covid guidelines will be followed.

AMBER T “Amber T…sixteen year old singer/ songwriter, how brilliant is she” Sir Elton John Local girl, 17 year-old Amber Titchener is already making waves in the music world. From performing numerous live sessions on BBC Kent, being interviewed live on BBC Radio 1, BBC Asian Network and BBC South East News to releasing her debut single “Tick Tock” with Dr.Zeus, at the tender age of 15, with a video that’s had over 1.5 millions YouTube views. We’re pleased to bring you a Q&A with Amber: What inspired you to start writing and singing your own tunes at aged 13? I have always loved singer/ songwriters and appreciated the lyrics more than the instrumental. As I love performing, it was important to be able to perform originals, a must at most venues; I had to get my head down and start writing, developing my own style and sound as I went along. So far, what has the highlights been of your early career? Most recently when Sir Elton John played my song on his Apple music show Rocket Hour, calling me brilliant… still feels surreal now! Other major highlights have been reaching over 100,000 Spotify streams. Selling

out Chequer Mead for my headline Teenage Cancer Trust gig… walking out on a stage I’d performed on for many years to suddenly doing my own show was amazing. Plus being the first acoustic artist to play at the open deck on London’s iconic Shard. I love playing big events, as it gets the adrenaline flowing and I’m lucky that I don’t suffer from stage fright. What do you hope for the immediate future and in the next few years? I hope to get back on stage and get around the country performing. As for the immediate future I hope my new single ‘Get Me’ is hugely successful. There’s a video to accompany it, which is really exciting as the past two scheduled videos had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

What local support have you had? I have been really lucky to have been asked to perform for the previous town mayors (Rex Whittaker & Danny Favor) at their events at Chequer Mead. For my early gigs I got massive support from Dave Phillips who put me on loads of Open Mics and still do gigs with him locally (when possible). I’ve been lucky to perform at East Court, on the High Street for the Big Reveal among others. I also get great support from Sackville School where I’m in the sixth form. Who is your favourite artist of all time and why? My favourite artist/band has to be the 1975. I’m a huge fan girl and really appreciate their unique creativity. After seeing them live numerous times, I’ve taken huge inspiration from not only their performance style but music too.

NEWS FROM THE FOREST

Well, here we are in the middle of summer and at the time of writing a chilly wind blows the rain horizontally across a slategrey sky; this provides a strong juxtaposition with the heat of the previous couple of weeks. It’s just been that kind of Summer. A good mixture of sunshine and precipitation, though, is what plant life like best and right across the forest we see grasses, bracken and forbs growing very quickly. As lovely as all this new growth is, it can prove a danger when obscuring the view from carpark exit points and ride crossings. Our countryside team undertake a busy program of verge cutting at this time of year to keep the view of the road clear for car drivers and horse riders alike. Lots of plant growth is great for our grazing animals. It means that the sheep, cattle and ponies have the chance to eat plenty and, let's face it, that’s what they are here for – to help with managing the habitat. However, the electric fencing we use for our livestock enclosures is negatively affected by high plant growth. Vegetation along the fence lines requires

regular strimming to keep the fence working and the animals safe. You will now see sheep and cattle grazing on the south chase in the grazing enclosure. As a result, extra care should be taken when driving between the cattle grids on Crowborough Road. The animals will often wander out on to the road or sit in the shade along the verges and can sometimes be difficult to spot in the dappled light. Whilst we welcome dog walkers, we would remind you that your canine chums must always be under close control. As alluded to earlier, there are lots of areas where grazing animals roam across Ashdown Forest. There are also heathland sites populated by ground nesting birds that are easily disturbed by dogs ranging through the undergrowth. Young fawns will be spending a lot of time hiding out in rough

vegetation and are at risk of disturbance or even attack should they be found. A forest-wide Nightjar survey took place in the last couple of weeks of June. These nocturnal birds start to arrive in the UK towards the end of April from Africa and are one of the reasons Ashdown Forest is designated as an SPA - special protection area. It can be a really rewarding experience to take a dusk stroll and hear the males churring. Given the birds amber-listed status it is important that we gather a better understanding of its numbers, and those of other species across the forest. It is by gathering this sort of data that we are better able to inform our conservation practices going forwards. So, weather allowing, a lovely time on Ashdown Forest can be had. The trees are in leaf and there is a wide variety of other flora and fauna to be enjoyed. Enjoy yourselves and enjoy the wildlife. Our car parks are free to use but please consider giving a donation through our website to help towards the upkeep and maintenance of the forest and car parks. www.ashdownforest.org
