“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

The Ladybird Book Mystery Local man John Potts got in touch with us recently about a little mystery we might be able to solve. Back in the 70s he'd popped into a bookshop, then on the high street near where Pizza Express is today. He picked up the Ladybird book of 'Road Sense', and flicking through the pages shortly realised that the artist had painted various images of East Grinstead. John bought the book, and having kept it in pristine condition all these years, dropped us a line about it. Here we publish some of the pages which includes a boy on a bus in which John believes was the Oxted school uniform of the time. If anyone knows who the artist was, a local person perhaps? Please drop us through a line. Thank you!

THE FIRST LOCAL BOND GIRL

Actress Madeline Smith, Rodger Moore’s first ever Bond Girl (among other accolades) was born in Hartfield in 1949 and shortly after moved to East Grinstead. She is coming back to the town this month on the 6th of June, to put on a talk at the library which promises to be oodles of fun and laughs. We realise that some of our readers will miss this date (the magazine will not be fully distributed) but we wanted to share news of Madeline and her story in any case and we have personally encouraged her to come back soon! She’ll be sharing echoes of WW2, her memories as a baby, interesting local characters, her mother’s love of Flomari's Tea Room biscuits in the High Street, her father’s dairy in London Road, St Swithun's Church and how the family moved from the country to London, where Madeline found a life of acting and modelling.... Madeline was a top model in the late 1960s, and appeared in famous shows such as The Two Ronnies, Steptoe and Son, Hammer Horror Films, Carry

on Again Matron, Morecambe and Wise, the Persuaders, amongst many others.... In 1973 Madeline starred as Roger Moore's first Bond Girl in the iconic James Bond 007 film, Live and Let Die: the two remained firm friends for life. Recently too, Madeline has been hosting the excellent "Q The Music" - The James Bond Orchestra, who are touring the country, performing the iconic theme songs. We are pleased to bring you a short Q&A with Madeline: What is most memorable part about having grown up in this area? I always bitterly regretted that my little family was forced to leave East Grinstead and later, Forest Row, before my baby impressions hardened into proper memories. The recollections belong to my mother, and I wrote them down not long before she died. Grinstead was very precious to her because these were the first few months and years of a marriage that was to later founder so bitterly after we left in 1952. She always looked back on a time when life was challenging and tough, yet rewarding. I am, and always have been, drawn to this magical area. It is where I began my life, after all! You worked with the likes of Roger Moore, Frankie Howard and Ava Gardner to name a few... which memory really stands out?

Being in bed with the delightful Roger Moore OBVIOUSLY! But I learnt my comedy craft from the genius that was Arthur Lowe, when I played his daughter in 5 episodes of a 1971 TV series called ' Doctor At Large'. Being a bond girl, must have been incredible, what feedback do you receive? It is an iconic scene because of the magic watch... I was Roger Moore's first Bond Girl and for that alone people value it more and more with each passing year. What was your favourite life lesson from your time as an actress that you could share with our readers? Life lesson learnt is to live only in the moment and relish every second. Always retain that first bubble of joy! My main aim is to make people laugh, because my first love is comedy.

5. Pour the cream mix into ramekins and cook in the oven at 150°C for 30-40 minutes, until the brûlée has set and has a firm jiggle when you move it. 6. Leave to cool before putting in the fridge to chill completely. 7. Just before serving, sprinkle demerara sugar on top of each ramekin

LOCAL FARMER SAVES FOX CUBS This story has been reported widely so you may have heard about it already and since it happened not far from East Grinstead and a lovely story at that, we wanted to include it in this issue. There is also information about the supporting charity as you will see: Local farmer Chris Rolfe from Haywards Heath was travelling on the A272 near Cowfold, having worked late, checking ewes, when the car in front of him hit a fox. He got out to check the situation, he could see the vixen had died, but on closer inspection saw that she was lactating. Chris then noticed her belly moving and, realising she was heavily in cub and likely due any minute, decided he had to somehow help, or all their lives would be lost. He ran to his car, as every minute was crucial, and pulled out his knife; he said it was instinct more than anything else. Having performed caesareans before, when sadly ewes had died suddenly in birth and the lambs needed rescuing, he undertook a c-section by the side of the road, in his car

headlights – incredibly he was able to pull five cubs out of the mother and placed them in his pockets to keep warm. All but one survived the journey home. ©Wildbynature

©Wildbynature

Chris explains, “It was a spur of the moment decision, I knew they would die if I didn’t try helping them and that I had nothing to lose if I did – but if I did nothing

2 0 LOCAL FARMER SAVES FOX CUBS CONTINUED next they gave them milk every 20 minutes needless to say it was a very long night! They had to be kept warm at all times, as for the first 2 weeks the cubs cannot regulate their body temperature, so they were placed under a heat lamp and on top of a covered hot water bottle. Over the next week the cubs were fed every hour (day and night!), gradually increasing to every three hours by week 5 … all in all a lot of hard work.

they would certainly die and very quickly now mum had passed”. “I remember ringing my mother and telling her I was about to do a c-section and get ready for some fox cubs to arrive home – I don’t think she believed me until I rang the doorbell at midnight! I’m so glad I did though, it’s been a wonderful experience to see them grow and flourish”.

Now they are eating puppy food and frozen chicks, Jeans explains, “the reason being, they would have fur and bones and all sorts if living with mum so we are trying to keep their diet as natural as possible, helping them to build resilience for release back to the wild. It has taken a lot of time, love and care – but worth every minute.”

It was midnight and Chris’s mother Jean, who had previous experience caring for foxes, jumped in to help. For the first hour they were warming and drying the clubs to get their circulation going, as cold cubs cannot suckle,

After hand-rearing them for about a month, their eyes started to open. Jean was concerned that she would imprint on them as their “parent” and their chances of being able to survive in the wild would be greatly reduced.

She rang the Fox Project and they suggested she hand them over to their cub unit run by Sue and Trevor Williams, who would be able to offer specialised care – especially given their unorthodox arrival. However once the Fox Project realised how well they had been doing in Jean’s care they offered her the chance to continue hand rearing them, but with their support, knowledge and back up – Jean jumped at the chance. Sue and Trevor reassured Jean that the cubs don’t get ‘too comfortable and trusting’ of any single person or environment, their natural and wild instincts to not trust people are inherent. They explained how interaction needed to be kept at a minimum and although they are given all the care they need, it’s best not to spend too long cuddling them – something Jean reluctantly agreed to stop doing! At around 10/12 weeks old

cubs usually start thinking about leaving mum, and so it’s around this time that they need to be fully encouraged to reject their human mum, although by this point, they see them more as a food supplier than a comfort or supplier of reassurance.

Jean explains that having reared them to this point is very exciting for the family as it’s a mark of how far they have come and how ready they are for their next adventure but it will be incredibly difficult to let them go, however, as they are wild animals, the aim has always been to get them back to the wild and use this second chance to live a long, healthy, happy life and most importantly free lives.

To help develop this instinct to leave “home” the Fox Project will swap them from local carer to local carer to ensure their wild side kicks in. They will spend three weeks at a time in different foster pens, getting acclimatised to new noises, people and objects – all of which helps to create a creature timid of the unknown and wary of all things human related. Then finally at 6 months old, they will go into a ‘release pen’ in a carers garden where they will slowly learn to become fully independent. Leaving the pen regularly, but always returning for food when and if they need it. Most cubs will soon leave completely and not return, but a cub has

2 4 LOCAL FARMER SAVES FOX CUBS CONTINUED The Fox Project which has assisted Chris and Jean with the cub’s journey is a local charity which looks after about 900 injured or abandoned foxes every year. We are lucky to have the charity on our doorstep in the Ashdown Forest area. For more information about the charity and how you can support their vital work see www. foxproject.org.uk or visit The Fox Project, The Lodge, Kings Toll Road, Pembury, Kent TN2 4BE, tel: 01892 82411. One of the cubs, Ginger, in the early days was very poorly and there was huge concern that he wouldn’t make it, the feeling was that his heart wasn’t strong enough to sustain his rapid growth rate. But incredibly this little chap pulled through and in doing so captured the hearts of many via Jeans Facebook page. The Delights of Summer in EG Jeff Dyson (27 Mill Way, RH19 4DD) and Dee and Richard Doyle (29 Mill Way, RH19 4DD), and Carole and Bob Farmer (16, Musgrave Avenue, RH19 4BS) have been past winners of Best Front Garden too.

16 Musgrave On 21st July there should be quite a blaze of colour and gardening talent to lift your senses and make you smile, on show for the National Garden Scheme in East Grinstead! Five of the towns beautiful gardens will be opening up for the scheme, and two brand new for 2019. Four of the five on the trail are past winners of EG in Bloom’s ‘Best Front Garden’. One of the new gardens belongs to the Chairman of In Bloom, Julie Mockford. Her garden, Twyford (35 Dorset Avenue, RH19 2AB) has an eclectic mix for visitors to see. It is a narrow garden designed into rooms, making the space seem deceptively large. Around each corner there are surprises ahead, at the bottom is a newly growing vegetable garden – work in progress, yet pleasing to the eye.

Jeff’s garden has a varied and colourful collection of perennials, with baskets and tubs of begonias and salvias, some annual planting. Dee and Richard's garden is a small front garden supplemented with baskets and pots with colourful annual planting. Meanwhile Carole and Bob’s garden is a colourful country cottage style garden on a quarter of an acre plot. A partly terraced garden with herbaceous borders,

The final garden on the trail and new for 2019, is Gail and Andy Peel’s garden (7 Nightingale Close, RH19 4DD). There is a steep drop down to a stream and as this area is under development it is not accessible to visitors.

MOON EXPLORATION by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum Earlier this year, the Chinese space agency succeeded in landing on the far side of the moon. Chang’e moon lander, together with its Vutu Rover, reached the 115 mile wide, Von Karman Crater, in January. The far side of the moon is out of reach of all signals and so is an extremely difficult achievement. Our one time East Grinstead resident, the late Patrick Moore would have rejoiced in the news. Although only an amateur astronomer, he was able to identify the Eastern Sea on the far side of the moon using only a conventional telescope. Patrick Moore, the longtime presenter of “The Sky at Night”, was born in Pinner on the outskirts of London. His parents were Captain Charles Moore and his wife, Gertrude. At the time of his birth, on March 4th 1923, it was still a small rural community. Before he was a year old, the family moved to Aldwick near Bognor, where his grandmother lived. He recalled, in an article for “Country Living”, that some of his earliest memories were of playing on the beach and catching shrimps, which were returned, unharmed. He once saw a collector catch a butterfly. On learning that its fate was to be pinned to a board, the young Patrick asked to see it and engineered its release. He was a life-long campaigner against any form of activity which involves killing creatures for so-called “sport”. Much to his annoyance the family moved again, this time to East Grinstead. He went to prep school here, but from the age of seven had to spend much of his time in bed. He suffered from a heart condition that precluded him from attending school regularly or playing sport. He was especially keen to play cricket. These restrictions continued until he was about fifteen. They resulted in his having

the time to spend studying astronomy. He had a small telescope in the garden and first studied the moon. This interest in the moon was to last a lifetime. He would have been delighted that the Chinese managed to land a rover there. Another focus for his attention was the planet, Jupiter. His mother, a talented artist, tutored him at home most of the time. Gertrude was also interested in astronomy, and later wrote and illustrated a children’s book on the subject, “Mrs Moore in Space”, Patrick contributed the preface. The Second World War found him lying about his age and medical history in order to join the RAF. He joined Bomber Command and rose to rank of Lieutenant. He suffered injuries, which were to return to trouble him in his later years, to the point that he could no longer use the telescope in his own garden at Selsey. It was at this period that he became engaged to Lorna, a nurse, who was tragically killed in the London Blitz while driving an ambulance. He never married, saying that “second best is not good enough for me”. After his discharge from the RAF in 1945 he returned to East Grinstead. By this time his health had improved so that he could now play cricket, bowling leg-breaks

3 2 MOON EXPLORATION CONTINUED and batting at number eleven. He worked for a few years as a prep school teacher and then was offered the post of director of the Armagh Observatory. Always outspoken, in an interview for the East Grinstead Observer in 1958 he is quoted as saying that “it would be easier to go to the moon by spaceship than to travel from East Grinstead to London by British Railways”! This situation was slightly relieved by the electrification of the line, but always seems to attract problems, the wrong sort of snow or leaves on the line. While he lived in the town he was always pleased to help others locally further their interest in astronomy. He subscribed to an appeal from Ardingly College for a small observatory in their grounds and also officially opened it. He also was the president of Crawley Astronomical Society for many years until he moved to Selsey. He must also have had connections with East Grinstead Grammar School, as a former pupil who was at the school in

the 1950s recalls that a number of pupils went on to have careers in astronomy, possibly because of Moore’s enthusiasm and influence. Indeed the town seems to have a forte for astronomy. Moore’s interests outside astronomy were wide and varied. Music was, perhaps, the greatest. He taught himself to play the piano and the xylophone and wrote two operettas. He counted Brian May, of Queen, as a personal friend. He was a keen chess player, often taking a travelling set with him and challenging people to a game. He was extremely fond of cats, supporting several charities which protect them. He was quoted

as saying that “a catless house is a souless house”. As someone who is owned by four felines, a sentiment I totally agree with. He was by nature conservative and was affiliated to several right-wing parties and, as an eccentric himself, expressed admiration for the “Monster Raving Loony Party”. He wrote over seventy books and was knighted for his services to astronomy in 1988. He appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving presenter of the longest running programme on television. It started in 1957 and he missed only one month. His move to Selsey in 1968 was largely because the light pollution in East Grinstead was affecting his work, but he retained links with East Grinstead. He returned here to open improvements to some sheltered accommodation, Dart Court, in September 2001. This was his last recorded visit to our town, which is still proud of its association with Patrick Moore, who was the leading amateur astronomer of his time.

The High Weald

Walking Festival Returns Even Bigger & Better

We are so lucky to live in a beautiful, medieval landscape with distinctive features which include rolling hills, studded with sandstone outcrops, dense woodland, small, irregular-shaped fields, scattered farmsteads and ancient routeways. After the huge inaugural success of last year, The High Weald Walking Festival returns again from the 14th to 22nd September. Where we live here in the High Weald AONB is a walker’s paradise, whether you’re an avid rambler or just want to get out in the fresh air the festival has something for everyone. Last year hundreds turned out to explore and enjoy the festival walks, including many in the Ashdown Forest area. The AONB contacted us to mention that many East Grinstead Living readers had responded and partaken in the festival and could we let everyone know it’s back! This year, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the legislation that led to the creation of AONBs, it is set to fully

showcase the High Weald with even more guided walks, most free-of-charge. With over forty inspiring guided walks, all ages and abilities are catered for. Themes include local history, wildlife, geology, creative writing, literature and architecture; many welcome children, some are accessible for buggies or wheelchairs, and some are suitable for dogs. Enjoy a short walk on Ashdown Forest: Look for dragonflies at Old Lodge Nature Reserve or stroll through the woods and heath of the forest fringe, finding the medieval deer park boundary. Take a slightly longer walk to seek out Winnie-the-Pooh’s favourite places on the forest. Look inside Nutley Windmill or tour the parks and architecture of Tunbridge Wells. You could wander Crowborough’s ancient routeways, following in the footsteps of livestock drovers. Go even further and take a picnic on one of the hikes. Admire stunning views at Ashdown Forest or Horsted Keynes. Explore the valley of the River Uck, or hear about the upwardly mobile Georgians of the historic estates around Groombridge. At last year’s High Weald Walking Festival, people particularly enjoyed the varied
