Before

After You can only become truly accomplished at something, if you thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing...my passion for various water features goes back to the days when my two brothers and I helped our Dad and his team design and build a number of Ponds, both large and small, on our farm in Zimbabwe. I’ve adopted an African theme in my design work, by using various size rocks in all my Ponds and Pondless Waterfalls, thus retaining that “close to nature” look, which everyone here in the UK admires and really loves about my work

“ADN Roofing is a family company that we can recommend highly. Our cottage needed a complete new roof. It was a difficult project involving complex angles, valleys, gables and flat areas. The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Whats inside this month

Dear Residents, Welcome to the October issue. Autumn has a wonderful charm and we hope you enjoy the multitude of colours that nature offers us this month.

We have a couple of fascinating local history articles from the Workhouses museum. We also decided to include a featurette about Anne Boleyn, as Hever is just down the road from us.

Finders Keepers

Actor Paul Putner who grew up in East Grinstead has shared a great anecdote for our readers. And finally a charming feature about one man and his robin.

Thank you for supporting our local businesses at this time, they appreciate it more than ever. Thank you for any feedback, it is all welcome. With Best Wishes, Tally & Chris

FINDERS KEEPERS By Jonathan Parrett East Grinstead Muesum Recently, the museum was visited by BBC’s Bargain Hunt, to film a short piece about the history of the East Grinstead Pottery, and the story of the man who saved many pieces from it, Charles W. Goolden. But who was Goolden, and why did he save so much? We think Goolden started investigating the old derelict East Grinstead Pottery buildings, which were in Park Road in about 1970. What he found inside was like a time capsule – the pottery had been shut down very abruptly and inside there were still pots and tiles lying around everywhere and various things in cupboards like labels and books that nobody seemed to have taken any notice of for many years. In our picture archive we have some wonderful photos of him as he worked to save the contents of the old pottery as well as interior scenes,

crammed full of pots, there are pictures of him smiling for the camera as he straddles the exposed roof timbers, so somebody else must have been with him to take these photos. Yet Goolden himself remains a mystery – and there has been very little written about him personally. We have found out that he died in March 1981, but there are two versions of his birth date – 21st May 1939 and 21st April 1939, which means he wasn’t very old when he died. He obviously had a great interest in history and he belonged to the East Grinstead Society, which was formed to save parts of the town that were being demolished.

Thanks to him, we have about 200 pieces from the pottery in the collection – and of course you can still see a lot of the finials and the tiles on the older buildings around the town. There’s a particularly nice wyvern on the top of one of the buildings in the London Road. The pottery in East Grinstead was established in 1855 by somebody called George Lynn and then the Foster family took it over in 1875. There is a flask in the V&A which is marked on the bottom ‘TH23 1865, EG/HFFoster’ so we think Foster was an employee of Lynn and took over the business. It was with the Foster family until it closed. At its height, it employed a lot of people producing mainly

FINDERS KEEPERS CONTINUED

domestic and functional pottery – everything from finials and tiles and fancy things for buildings, to chicken feeders, dog dishes, plant pots and garden ornaments. Apparently, they also designed things according to their customers’ requests, so if someone wanted something with a special rim or decoration, they would turn it out for them. But the pottery closed during the war in 1942 because the kiln fire couldn’t be damped down hard enough to make it undetectable from the air. It was believed that it was going to be a target for enemy bombers. After the war nobody seemed to pick it up again and it fell into disrepair, becoming more derelict until it was eventually sold as a building site. It’s around this time that Goolden started his investigations. He loaned quite a lot of material to the museum in the early days and then when he died it all came to us. What is interesting is how much he saved; he didn’t just take one sample or one example of one particular thing – he rescued the lot. The piece for Bargain Hunt will go out early next year.

AUTUMN

Gardening

Autumn is the perfect time of year to plant, as the soil is still warm from the summer sun, which encourages root growth, and moist from autumn rain. Choose plants that will add instant colour and drama to your garden now, grow your own winter vegetables, plant a fruit tree, or add spring flowering bulbs for beautiful blooms next year.

Instant Impact Plants As the days shorten go for to bold, vibrant colours, moving away from pale pastel colours that are so popular in summer. Brighten your garden by adding asters and chrysanthemums, and put life back into your beds and containers, with dainty violas, cyclamen and pansies.

Grow Your Own It’s so satisfying to grow your own fruit and veg and easy too. Now is the time to plant broad beans, cabbages, onions, garlic, peas, salad mixes and spinach. Autumn is also the best season to plant fruit trees such as apples, pears and plums – just give them time and they’ll reward you for years with glorious blossom in the spring followed by tasty fruit.

Bulbs Plan for spring and plant flowering bulbs now, and you’ll have beautiful blooms next year. Buying now give you the widest choice and freshest stock. Some of the most popular bulbs to try: tulips, daffodils, crocuses, alliums and snowdrops.

Get A Lush Lawn Now is the perfect time to get your lawn into shape. Remove Moss - Scarify your lawn with a rake to remove moss and weeds. Or if this sounds like too much hard work, then try a great product called ‘Mo Bacter’, an easy to use moss remover that ‘eats’ moss without turning it black, so you don’t have to rake it out! It is safe for children and pets, and can also feed your lawn for up to 100 days. Aerate Your Lawn - Perforating the soil with small holes helps drainage, and allows water, air and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, giving you a stronger and more vigorous lawn. Small areas can be spiked with a garden fork, or use a handheld hollow tine aerator. Feed & Seed - Use a granular feed such as ‘Miracle-Gro Evergreen Autumn’ which releases a steady amount of nutrients over a period of weeks. Then fix any bare patches by overseeding. EAST GRINSTEAD LIONS

Serve up lunch

A group of enthusiastic East Grinstead Lions and their families have been working with EG Age UK to deliver hot meals to the homes of many of their elderly members.

of the kitchen at Glen Vue is underway and it is hoped, in the near future, more local elderly residents will benefit from this hot meals delivery programme.

Prior to Lockdown, many of the Age UK members who came to the centre for activities and social interaction, enjoyed a hot meal before returning home. However, due to social distancing measures, the centre was unable to provide its normal services.

If you would like to find out more about joining the EG Lions, please contact Richard Maynard on 03458339506 or visit their website: eastgrinsteadlions.co.uk

Since June, the lions have been delivering meals on Wednesdays and Thursdays to residents living not only in the town, but also in the surrounding villages. Escaping to Ashdown Forest For those of us lucky enough to live nearby, Ashdown Forest has offered freedom, inspiration, and sanctuary over the last few months. Everyone will agree that the forest is more beautiful than ever, with recovering habitats providing shelter for record numbers of birds, butterflies, among others. We need nature more than ever which is why we kept the car parks open during lockdown - seeing unprecedented visitor numbers. We are proud of the role the forest has in enriching lives, however visitor numbers of this magnitude present new challenges. In the background, our team have been working harder than ever attending fires, deer vehicle collisions, fly-tips, caring for livestock, installing benches, litter picking the car parks, etc. We provided lockdown activities and developed educational resources, also launching wildlife projects, such as the iNaturalist app, to engage with the local community, while our conservation team has worked tirelessly. It is thanks to your support

and donations that this is possible. You may not be aware that Ashdown Forest is now predominantly selffinanced and funding opportunities have been further diminished during the pandemic. With that in mind, we are publishing a 2021 Ashdown Forest calendar, which shows its beauty through the seasons. All proceeds will go towards the Conservators of Ashdown Forest who have been caring for the forest since 1885. If you can help, the A3 calendar is available to buy through our website: www.ashdownforest.org/store/ Thank you for supporting Ashdown Forest.

Robin & I Local photographer, Tony Putman, has a very special friendship with a feathery friend. He and the robin have appeared on BBC South East, with photos on Springwatch, among other places. We are pleased to bring you a Q&A with him:

How did your relationship with robin’s begin? In 2014 I took a photo of a robin in my garden, I posted it on my facebook profile, a good friend commented, “you can train robins to fly to your hand”. I’m a gardener by trade, so it’s inevitable I’ll bump into wildlife (I’ve always loved animals anyway). At a job I work at for two days a week, I noticed a robin following me when I was digging the flower beds. It was November and I knew robins are territorial during winter, which meant I could find him and get to know him. I used dried mealworms to gain his trust. At the same time my parents gave me their old DSLR canon 300d camera; I wanted to get good photos of the robin. I named him ‘Robin’. That

was the beginning of my photography adventure and I’ll never have a lonely winter again. Robin was great, he’d follow me around the garden and he knew he was safe with me. One time he was sitting on the gate and he was looking up, so I looked and there was a kestrel hovering

above us. Robin looked at the kestrel and then looked at me and he didn’t run, he stayed, seeming to know the kestrel was unlikely to attack with me there.

Please describe a typical day with your feathery friend? It’s just normal for me. Bob is now the 8th robin, I trained 3 last year in the same garden (that was interesting). I’ll get to work and Bob will either be waiting for me on the fence by the gate or I’ll find him, usually in the hawthorn hedge which is the main part of his territory. He’ll have some mealworms, sometimes we’ll do some photography, then I’ll get on with my days’ work. I have my two dogs with me too, they’re both

2 0 ROBIN & I CONTINUED border collies. During the day sometimes Bob will come and find me to see what I’m up to and sometimes he’ll call me by making a strange chirping noise. Or I’ll go looking for him if I want to do some photos or just want to say hello. I can call him too, as he recognises my call. It’s like having a wild pet but he’s free and can take care of himself, which is awesome.

we care to look. I have to be calm, patient and respectful for him to trust me, it’s a great way to relax. Plus, when spring arrives and we’ve all made it through the winter together, that’s a great feeling knowing he’s survived and will probably go on to raise his young.

What feedback have you had?

What’s the best highlight of having your robin friendship?

If my robin photos put a smile on someone’s face, I’ll continue to photograph them. I’ll continue to befriend the robins either way, it’s second nature to me now.

The best thing about having Bob in my life: he reminds me of what matters in the world. Everything we want is what other people tell us we should want. Nature doesn’t do that, it’s harsh yet beautiful and it’s there for all of us if

Anne Boleyn

& Hever Castle

Hever Castle is thought to be the place where Henry and Anne fell in love. The now 125-acre grounds would not have existed during the pair’s courtship but the recreated Tudor knot and herb gardens allow visitors to experience a garden from that period.

One of the most famous historical figures in British history Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I, grew up at Hever Castle, not far from East Grinstead. Then called Lancaster Great Park, Ashdown Forest and the wider area would have been known to the Boleyns as Henry VIII had a hunting lodge there. Hever is a double-moated castle and visitors are able to view Anne’s childhood bedroom. Two prayer books owned and signed by her are also on display. The daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, Anne was educated in the Netherlands and

the French court before securing a job as a maid of honour to Catherine of Aragon. Although not considered the most beautiful lady at court, her refinement, education and quick-wit gained her many admirers, amongst them King Henry VIII.

Henry met Anne when he was still married to Catherine of Aragon and it was his love for Anne and her insistence that she not be his mistress that helped to lead Henry and the country to break away from Rome and expedite the Reformation. It is now believed that Anne Boleyn made the monumental decision to marry Henry VIII while she was at Hever Castle during the Christmas of 1526. Anne sent Henry a bejewelled ship as a New Year’s gift with a maiden at the helm, signifying to him that she was prepared to venture with him into the rough seas of the quest for an annulment from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. 2 4 ANNE BOLEYN & HEVER CASTLE CONTINUED

Anne at Hever Castle thanking her for her ‘étrenne,’ which is a New Year’s gift. A couple of years later, before her marriage to Henry, she was sent into quarantine at Hever during the sweating sickness pandemic of 1528, where her and her father Thomas Boleyn became gravely ill with the disease. Henry was so concerned by the news that he sent his second-best doctor, Dr Butts, to attend the Boleyn family at Hever. Although Anne and her father survived, her brother-in-law William Carey died from the sweat. Henry wrote many letters to Anne at Hever during her illness and they survive today in the Vatican archives. Henry and Anne married in a secret ceremony on 14 November 1532. She soon became pregnant and had one daughter, Elizabeth who would go on to be one of the most famous monarchs in history. As most of us know, three years later Anne was investigated for high treason and executed. One of the prayer books on display at Hever Castle is thought to have been taken to the scaffold with her. Anne Boleyn wasn’t the only Queen Anne of Hever. Hever Castle became part of the Crown estate after the fall of the Boleyn family and Henry VIII purchased the property. He allowed his fourth Queen Anne of Cleves, who remained in Britain after their marriage was annulled (and

unconsummated), to rent Hever Castle for £9 13s 31/2d, with the Crown paying her rent. As Anne of Cleves outlived Henry and all his wives, she had some rather grand landlords who owned Hever Castle: King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, Queen Jane Grey and lastly Queen Mary I and King Philip of Spain. Anne of Cleves called Hever Castle home for seventeen years, leaving funds for the poor of Hever in her will. Tudor enthusiasts and fans of Anne Boleyn flock to Hever Castle to see where she grew up and walk in her footsteps.

WORKHOUSES by Dorothy Hatswell, East Grinstead Muesum

How to help the people who, through illness, injury or age, cannot support themselves or their family, is a problem that has existed for all time. Over the centuries, various laws have tried to address the problem. The earliest attempt to regularise the situation was the Poor Law Act of 1388. It put the onus of help on the state and away from individual help. It was precipitated by the extreme hardship and poverty caused by the widespread outbreaks of bubonic plague, or the Black Death as it was popularly known. In England, up to that time, those in need had to rely on personal help given by individuals or communities. This resulted in what today, would be referred to as a “post code lottery”. Before the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, in the C16th, the monks were one of the main sources of shelter and food for the poor. The parishes were also charged with providing for them but after the monks were unable to help even themselves, the burden fell more and more on the villages and towns to use the revenue they obtained from local taxes to support the poor. In fact, the Act for the Relief of the Poor, passed in 1601, made parishes legally responsible for them. People would have to travel

back to their place of birth, as parishes would not help outsiders. This practice dates back even to biblical times. Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem as Joseph was of the House of David, centred on Bethlehem. I have never understood why Mary, not his wife at the time, had to travel, heavily pregnant, with him. However, in order to pay his taxes in his own “parish”, Joseph had to make this long journey. This regime of ‘Relief of the Poor’, continued for two centuries but the mass unemployment and poor harvests in the decade following the Napoleonic wars, made a further change necessary. In 1834, the new Poor Law discouraged helping those who would not enter the recently built workhouses. The reason for this is that within the workhouse, residents were used as a source of unpaid labour. They were literally

“workhouses”. Everyone who was able was put to work, breaking stones for road repairs, crushing bones for fertilizer or simple sewing tasks. The residents were divided into four groups; the aged and impotent, children, able-bodied males and able-bodied females. Within the home, they were segregated by gender. Male children under the age of two, were allowed to remain with their mothers, but otherwise families were split up. Often, they could not see or speak to each other for years, although they were under the same roof. Parishes were grouped into Unions. The East Grinstead Union served the villages of Crawley Down, West Hoathly and Copthorne. The original site of the first East Grinstead Workhouse is unknown. In 1742 it consisted of seven rooms on each of the ground and first floors, with a garret (habitable attic) and cellar.

2 8 WORKHOUSES CONTINUED It was replaced in 1747 by a new building in the London Road, approximately at the foot of what, was subsequently, named Rice’s Hill. In 1859 a new workhouse was built in Railway Approach. Partly because the old building needed repairs but mainly to provide the extra accommodation needed for the expanded catchment area. Conditions within were grim. On arrival, all personal items of clothing and other possessions were removed, and they were issued with uniforms. The diet was adequate, but boring. Bread and gruel, a thin porridge, was served at breakfast. Lunch was a small quantity of meat with vegetables,

Tree Surgery & Hedge Cutting

followed by suet pudding or rice pudding. In the evening, soup together with a piece of cheese, was given. Prayers were said before all meals. Some basic education was given to the children, but it lacked the breadth of education provided in state schools. Discipline was strict. Beatings were not uncommon and food could be withheld for relatively small misdemeanours. This general description of life in the workhouse does not, however, reveal the personal stories and tragedies of the inhabitants. Next month I will try to tell some of these, briefly glimpsed in the census returns.

A One in A Million Chance, or Not…

Paul Putner was born in East Grinstead in 1966, and attended Sackville. He lived here off and on until the mid-1980s when he moved to London to seek his fortune as an actor, becoming one of those faces that pops up in TV comedy with appearances in This Morning with Richard Not Judy, Little Britain, Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, Rock & Chips, Downton Abbey, and more. Here is an East Grinstead anecdote Paul has kindly shared with us: ‘In 1990, I lived in California for a while. I was 23. Exciting times. As a young man, I was a massive fan of horror movies, so naturally, I was eager to pay homage to my unhealthy interest by paying a visit to Universal Studios. It was a dream come true to take the studio backlot tour and witness such spooky delights as the Bates house from Psycho, drive through the ‘Court of Miracles’ village set in Frankenstein, experience Cylons from Battlestar

Galactica, be attacked by the mechanical shark from Jaws and scared witless by a huge animatronic King Kong! Oh, and I also sat on the bonnet of KITT, the car from TV’s Knightrider. Envious? ‘But nothing could’ve prepared me for the biggest shock of the day. After the tour, I went for a snack in one of the many resort restaurants and noticed the interior was attempting to recreate the ambience of an old British railway station. Bit corny, I thought, but when I glanced above the bar to see a huge sign for East Grinstead, I was gobsmacked. One minute I’m in Tinseltown, the next I’m back in my hometown! - sort of. ‘My dollar spends were slightly straining by then, so I used the opportunity to try to blag a complimentary lunch. Sidling up to the waiters, I informed them they were almost in the presence of royalty. I mean, what are the chances of all the railway stations in Britain they could’ve picked, the probability of someone

harking from East Grinstead being stood at their salad bar? ‘Quite high as it happens. They were courteous but not impressed. One of them revealed that EG locals pass through from time to time and always ask for a snap. We Grinsteadians apparently get around! Ah well, no free lunch for me. I wondered if in a parallel universe that day, there was a boy from Arkansas in a fake 1950’s American diner at Pinewood Studios having his picture taken under a Little Rock station sign? Spooky thought’.
