As well as explaining how he started painting wildllife and why he choose to live here he also gives us a slight insight into his “happiest commission”: a portrait of the Queen Mother. David Shepherd

David Shepherd, CBE, lives in Hammerwood, East Grinstead. He’s known internationally as one of the world’s leading wildlife artists.

Throughout his career he has therefore tried to do all he can to repay the enormous debt he feels he owes wildlife. In 1984 he established the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to channel his own conservation efforts that continue to make a real difference to wildlife. David is perhaps lesser known for his portraits, which include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. His life as an artist and conservationist has featured in many TV programmes, including the BBC’s ‘This is Your Life’ (1990).

David celebrates his 80th birthday in April and will be marking the occasion with a fundraising dinner at the Natural History Museum hosted by Michael Parkinson on 6th May 2011. Tally (Editor) had the good fortune to interview him at his home. The first question I had was why he choose East Grinstead to live. He admits that some people have asked him why he would choose this town with it’s permanent traffic gridlock? (the bottle necks evidently leave a lasting impression). Augmenting this, on the A22 there’s not much else to see but a Homebase, Macdonalds, etc.… “The top part of the High Street is beautiful.. I’ve got the impression that in recent months the town is trying to make itself even more attractive… And people are so friendly around here,” He told me.

Peace & tranquility at home are a very important part of David’s life and essentially why he settled in this neck of the woods. Having lived in Hascombe, Surrey, in a country house, they had realised it was time to move on. David explained, “same old thing, (the house) was originally built 500 years ago, on a track that then became a road, that then became a highway. The articulated trucks discovered it as a short cut… They would come belting down the road, hitting the trees… if you were out in the garden you could hardly hear yourself speak because of the noise”. A circle was drawn around the Surrey base of his conservation charity and East Grinstead was funnily enough right on the line.

“You can stand out in the garden and not hear a sound except birds singing… it’s unique to be so near to London and yet not be able to hear anything except birdsong”. Indeed, while waiting in his lounge it was so serenely quiet that the sound of my mobile was almost a momentary shock - extremely rare in this day & age! His current residence dates back to 1490 and he admitted he couldn’t live in anything modern. “The older I get, the more I love living in the past for a hundred reasons.” He admitted he’s a grumpy old man, “there’s just so much to grump about… The Health & Safety act, children growing up now can’t do anything because of the danger angle… you can’t play in the woods, you can’t fool about… all our daughters broke arms (as children); it’s all part of growing up... (it’s) all being dissipated now.”

sure doesn’t happen often”. She told David how she never had time to chat to anyone, as she’s always shaking hands. “She so enjoyed speaking about Africa, we talked about all the memories. I got away with outrageous things, used to turn up dressed like this (points to trousers complete with dabs upon dabs of dried oil colour) … she said something like: ‘modern art’”. We go on to talk about the RAF’s “Bomber Command Memorial” recently featured with a double page spread in the Daily Express, a cause close to his heart. “50 years overdue is shameful. Only now, when they’re nearly all passed away… Acres of stuff about the Battle of Britain, but the RAF’s Bomber Command never gets a mention...55 thousand plus young guys didn’t come back…We have planning permission just need to raise a bit more”. David’s asked to support so many charities, and it’s impossible to get involved with all of them, but because of his debt of gratitude to the RAF he jumped at the chance with the memorial fund. “I owe so much of my success to the RAF. I’ve flown with them all over the world for 40 years. They commissioned my first wildlife painting in 1960 which changed my life… They flew me to Kenya as their guest and asked for an original painting for the officers mess but said, ‘we don’t want bloody airplanes as we fly them all day’…”.

A topical subject these days (with the recently released and much-accoladed film, The Kings Speech), my ears especially perked up when he mentioned the late Queen Mother: “A few weeks after that I was commissioned to paint the Queen Mother’s portrait at Clarence House... She asked, ‘how do you manage to paint the Ark Royal one minute and my portrait the next?’ which was her favourite ship by coincidence, ‘there’s no difference ma’am,’ I answered… realising what terrible trouble I was about to get into... she just laughed. She was lovely. I think painting the Queen Mother has to be one of my happiest commissions. I had 6 one hour sessions... She offered another session as she’d so enjoyed talking, which I’m

“She kept me waiting one morning and she said, ‘I’m so sorry to keep you waiting Mr. Shepherd, I’ve been up the road having coffee with my daughter’…… isn’t that lovely”. He admitted that only 2 people have truly stopped him in his tracks one was Queen Mother, the other Neil Armstrong. This month we interview

Peter Arnstein

a 56 year old Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeon, husband and father of a boy and a girl each in their twenties. He was appointed Consultant at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead in 1994. His NHS role involved a surgical cover for the some half million population. Subsequently, becoming involved in the renovation of the old Burns Unit, which was imbued with new life as the McIndoe Surgical Centre. 1. What do you like most about what you do? Beyond the technical achievement, I greatly enjoy the restoration of confidence displayed by patients. In particular, a case such as a mother and daughter we recently treated, where the mother received breast reconstruction following cancer and the daughter then found a lump which thankfully proved to be benign, but was removed. Both ladies were completely happy with their new outlook on life and the way surgery had saved them.

2. What is the hardest part of your community role? The hardest part is accepting the schism between what can be achieved for people with Plastic Surgery versus the financial restraints in the NHS. 3. Why did you decide to work in this area? Having explored numerous facets of surgery, Plastic Surgery particularly appealed because it demands technical excellence. 4. What’s the best thing about living in the East Grinstead area? I am a country boy at heart and East Grinstead offers that environment. I cycle to work using bike paths and back roads, which is a daily joy to me. 5. What has been the highlight of the year so far? At the time of writing I would say the potential for true democratic reform in North Africa and Egypt. 6. What’s your favourite film? Doctor Zivago and the impact it made on a naive 15 year old. 7. What’s your favourite one-liner? “I wouldn’t take my advice if I were you”. 8. Who or what is the biggest inspiration to what you do? I have many colleagues who have an enormous enthusiasm for what we do and this continues to drive the team forward.

KITCHEN TRENDS FOR SPRING ‘11

COLOURS Kitchens are definitely becoming a much more colourful affair. Often we are designing kitchens now that are either painted using colours like Duck Egg Blue or Sage along with the more

traditional cream and ivory. All of these colours work well with the contrast of wood and can be used together in a scheme using Oak as the work surface or in the flooring. For a more modern look

the gloss finishes are still very in vogue and stronger colours are being used for a very dramatic finish, Aubergine, Grey and even Lime Green can create a stunning wow factor kitchen.

Glass is now being used in nearly every kitchen that we design and install. Be it a splash back behind the hob in a complementary colour or to have the worktops, walls and window sills all in glass.

HOT WATER TAP We are installing more boiling water taps in our kitchens. We have even had one installed in the showroom which saves space as we do not need a kettle on the work surface. The British drink on average over a thousand cups of tea a year. That amounts to 3 cups a day. And as tea is becoming ever more popular, customer are demanding better quality.

So the most obvious use is for making a cup of tea or coffee but it can be used to poach fish, blanch vegetables, rinse baby bottles to name just a few. Vegetables

If the weather is suitable sow beetroot, broad beans, carrots, leeks, lettuce and other salad leaves. Also onions, parsnips, peas, radish, spinach, summer cabbage and cauliflowers. Ensure the ground is friable. Follow instructions on the packet for sowing depths. Plant onion sets, shallots and garlic. At the end of the month plant early chitted potatoes and put maincrop potatoes in trays or boxes to chit. Regularly hoe vegetable beds so weeds are not taking available moisture or nutrients.

Fruit Garden

For an early crop of strawberries bring potted plants into the greenhouse. Water well and feed. If your rhubarb is pushing through, cover it with an upturned bucket to exclude light. This will encourage the plant to produce tender pink shoots. Mulch fruit with your own compost or wellrotted farm manure but ensure it does not touch the stems of each plant as this can cause them to rot.

Roses

Continue pruning large-flowered and cluster-flowered roses. Then give them a feed. Shrub roses should not be pruned in the spring, as you won’t get flowers. However, you can feed and mulch shrub roses now. This is the best month for planting new roses. Never plant a new rose in soil that has grown a rose previously. The new one will suffer from rose transplant sickness. If you must have a rose in a particular place you should change the soil at least 1 metre all around the planting hole and 1 metre deep.

Lawns

Raise the mowing height for the first cut of the season. New lawns can be made using turf but it is best to wait until late in the month or even into April before sowing grass seed. Towards the end of the month feed the lawn with high nitrogen fertilizer.

Bulbs

Plant summer flowering bulbs in well prepared soil. If you have wet soil place a layer of grit in the bottom of the planting hole.

Hope 4 Thomas www.hope4thomas.com Our family lives in East Grinstead, myself, Adam, my wife Cinzia, and our 2 boys, James 7 and Thomas 4. Although a happy and determined little boy, Thomas suffers from Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. His condition means that his muscles are extremely stiff, and he cannot walk properly, run, etc. Cerebral palsy is incurable, and in this country is treated with a series of painful operations on his legs, and possibly his hips whilst he grows up. As he gets older and heavier, his muscles will not be able to cope, which may very well result in him becoming wheelchair bound. Thomas has been accepted for an operation which is performed in St Louis in the USA, which would permanently release the spasticity in Thomas’s legs, and allow him to walk properly, and even run, as well as do all the other things that children take for granted. To help pay for this life changing procedure, we’ve set up the Hope 4 Thomas Fund to try and raise the £45,000 needed by June. Numerous fundraising events have been arranged to help us to reach our target and we’ve had lots of help & support so far. Here are some organised events (more listed on our website): Saturday 19th March. Thomas’ Quiz Night, at Sackville School, Main Hall, East Grinstead. Tickets are £10 per person and include a fish and chip meal. You can bring your own drink, and there will also be a luxury raffle in aid of Hope 4 Thomas. Saturday 16th April. Fundraising Abseil, 28 Dignwall Road, Croydon. Anyone interested in being sponsored to abseil this 10 storey building should contact us. Be daring, be caring. Since November 16th when the Royal engagement was announced the whole world has gone “Kate & Wills” mad. Always ask to see a portfolio from the photographer, preferably a whole wedding allowing you to see all the images captured and not just a select few. Cheap is not always best. With today’s digital cameras there are plenty of friends and uncle’s that may offer to do your wedding photography for you.
