The price quoted was the price we paid. A special thanks to Mark who was flexible, resourceful and a brilliant craftsman, also very pleasant to have around our house.” FH

Vegetable jalfrezi

SUDOKUS

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tsp vegetable oil 2 medium onions, chopped 1 medium apple, cored and chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tbsp jalfrezi curry paste 1 carrot, sliced 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped 400g tomatoes, chopped 3 handfuls cauliflower, broken into florets 410g chickpeas in water, rinsed and drained 300ml vegetable or chicken stock 180g easy cook long grain brown rice 50g frozen peas 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped (optional) 4 tbsp natural yoghurt, to serve 1 pinch ground black pepper

Method:

1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the onions, apple and garlic and cook, stirring, for 3-4 minutes. Stir in the curry paste and cook for a few seconds. 2. Add the carrot, pepper, tomatoes, cauliflower, chickpeas and stock. Simmer, partially covered, for 25-30 minutes, adding a little extra stock or water if needed. At the same time, cook the rice in a large saucepan of gently boiling water. It will take about 30 minutes. 3. Add the peas and coriander (if using) to the curry and heat for 2-3 minutes. Check the seasoning, adding a little ground black pepper if needed. 4. Serve the vegetable curry on warmed plates, with the rice, topping each portion with 1 tbsp of yoghurt.

Magical Place?

Imagine you were offered lifetime admission to a vast, enchanting park – a place where paths wind through woods and slopes, past streams, waterfalls, hidden gardens and magnificent views, a place whose wildlife and landscape can set your spirits soaring. Most of us would probably be willing to pay a small admission charge for all this wouldn’t we?

The reason is simple: the forest is losing public grants of £60,000 which help pay for its maintenance, from clearing up fly-tipping to cutting back dangerous roadside trees, keeping car parks in good order to managing livestock.

Wheatear © Steve Alton

In fact, there’s no charge to enjoy Ashdown Forest (which at the moment offers all these things and more) and there won’t be. But if you’d like to keep the forest the way you love it, the time has come to consider making a donation for its upkeep.

Unless the guardians of the forest, the conservators, can raise this money elsewhere the forest will start to lose some of its shine. That’s why they are now urgently appealing for donations from everyone who appreciates and enjoys the unique qualities of Ashdown Forest. Whether you are an occasional stroller or a regular dog-walker, a horse-rider or a nature-watcher, a picnicker or someone who scampers across the forest with the kids – please pause and think whether your life would be worse without it. And if the answer to that question is yes, why not donate? Even small contributions of a

There’s a vast range of work the conservators and forest staff do to keep it at its best. That includes emergency help such as attending road accidents and deer collisions as well as the preservation and enhancement of the forest’s walks, rides, car parks and open spaces. few pounds will be warmly welcome. There are a million visits to the forest each year and if each one resulted in a gift of just six pence it would close the funding gap the forest is facing.

Donations have begun coming in from friends and supporters of the forest – please do take a moment to contribute if you’re able. www.ashdownforest.org. With grateful thanks.

EAST GRINSTEAD STAMP & POSTCARD CLUB Whilst it is generally accepted that the club will mark its 75th anniversary in 2019, there is actually no record of the founding of the club or its existence over the first 25 years or so. The club plans to mark the anniversary socially with a lunch, but a more public demonstration of the club’s existence will take place on the 27th May (Bank Holiday Monday), when the Association of Sussex Philatelic Societies (ASPS) is holding its Spring Convention at Felbridge Village Hall (Philatelic, ‘the study of stamps and postal history’). The event is being held in conjunction with Chris Rapley who holds a regular fair at that venue - the arrangement is a common sense approach, due to the lack of viable venues as well as the number of fairs around this time, partly due to a late Easter this year. In addition to the stamp and postcard dealers who will be present at the fair, the association is arranging for displays and talks to take place, in association with the East Grinstead club; in particular one presentation will be given on East Grinstead Postal History. The club curated a display at East Grinstead Museum in 2016, The Post comes to East Grinstead, with a limited amount of philatelic material, but the presentation at the

Sussex Spring Convention will show far more examples of postal items depicting the early postal service to and from East Grinstead. Apart from visitors from across the Sussex clubs, and beyond, the East Grinstead club is hoping to attract interest which may result in new members. Whilst stamp collecting is a very individualistic hobby, there is much to be gained from meeting up with fellow collectors, and knowledge and encouragement gained from the displays given at club meetings. The hobby remains one of the most popular, although less so with younger people these days. This does not mean that there isn’t the basis for a worthwhile hobby any more, but collectors have to be more discerning from the outset. It is with this in mind that the East Grinstead club would like to encourage would-be collectors, maybe the more mature person (male or female) with a little more time, seeking a new interest.

If you would like to pursue an interest in stamp collecting, you are invited to contact the stamp club. If a number of people are interested, a workshop could be held to discuss different aspects of collecting depending on the collectors interests, and some of the more mundane aspects of developing , arranging and housing a collection. Please get in touch with the club secretary and we’ll take it from there. **The event on the 27th May is organised by the Association of Sussex Philatelic Societies in conjunction with Chris Rapley Stamp & Postcard Fairs. It will be held at Felbridge Village Hall, Crawley Down Road RH19 2NT from 10am – 4pm. Admission is free, and there will be refreshments available. For further information about East Grinstead Stamp & Postcard Club contact the Secretary. Malcolm Green, meridian35@btinternet.com 01342 327554

ASHPLATS WOOD UPGRADE Ashplats Wood spans almost 70 acres and is part of the East Court Estate. The main part of the wood is designated as Ancient Woodland and a Local Wildlife Site. The woodland sits within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is a beautiful place for a woodland stroll in peaceful surroundings. If you haven't visited Ashplats Wood recently then you may not be aware that Mid Sussex District Council has made some improvements to the McIndoe Path that runs through the wood. The McIndoe Path is a main cut through for local schoolchildren on their way to and from school but often became boggy during the wet autumn and winter months. Mid Sussex District Council has teamed up with East Grinstead Memorial Estate Ltd to install wooden steps, boardwalks and rolled stone paths to ensure people can enjoy the walkway all year round. The improvements will help walkers to stay clean and dry while they enjoy the nature reserve and make Ashplats Wood more accessible. The path improvements add to the 2.5km way-marked circular walk around the East Court Estate, which enables walkers to explore the open parkland of East Court and Ashplats Wood. The circular walk offers the opportunity to see the East Court mansion, now the home of East Grinstead Town Council, and the ponds, streams, glades and wildlife of the woodland, as well as enjoy views across the High Weald.

The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, time to banish the winter blues with a little spring Cleaning.

Hints & Tips • De-clutter: Prior to the actual cleaning, take a big cardboard box, and go through each room in the house spotting things that you never use, don’t fit or just make the place look too cluttered and put them in the box (donate the contents to charity or give them away…. try not to chuck if possible as it creates landfill waste). • Clean room by room, making a brief checklist of actions to take; save time by avoiding anything that has recently been cleaned. • Before you start have all your cloths, sprays, etc. to hand to save on time. • Clean from the top down by dusting first before finally vacuuming. • Start with either the bathroom or kitchen, whichever is hardest! Get the tougher jobs out of the way first before moving on to the easier rooms. • Open the windows! Doing so regularly is also good practice, about 15 minutes per day. Fresh air can sweep through and everything else can head outside – it worked for the Victorians! • Make- up an all-purpose cleaning spray that you love: 1 cup of warm water, add 1 tsp of baking soda and 2 tbsp of white vinegar. Optional: 20 drops of lavender oil or 20 drops of orange oil or If you would like a stronger disinfecting spray add 20 drops of tea tree or peppermint oil instead. If you love the scent then cleaning will be a more enjoyable experience and easier to do! If you can, rope in every other member of the family to do their bit… (it might seem too tough to get them off the screens, etc. but it’ll be worth it in the long run!)

History of Mother’s Day Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, who held festivals in honour of the mother Titan goddess Rhea who gave birth to many of the gods including Zeus. In Christian traditions the festival known as “Mothering Sunday” is the earliest precedent for modern Mothers Day celebrations. With this special day soon upon us, here are a few 'mother' quotes for inspiration: 'God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers'. Rudyard Kipling 'Mothers hold their children's hand for a short while, but their hearts forever.' unknown

'A Mother's Love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking...' Helen Rice 'All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.' Abraham Lincoln

'When your mother asks, 'Do you want a piece of advice?'. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway.' Erma Bombeck

'Mothers hold their children's hands for a while, but their hearts forever' Unknown To all of our readers that are mums, Happy Mothers Day! Enjoy your special day.

HELPING OUR LOCAL QUEEN VIC facilities for my son, it put him at ease and made the whole experience less stressful.” Over the last year, the charity was able to fund £172,000 worth of improvements at the hospital, including purchasing medical equipment not routinely paid for by the NHS, supporting research to find new treatments, as well as improving other patient areas. Going to hospital can be daunting, especially for children, so to help make the experience more positive QVH Charity set up a fundraising appeal last year to transform the children’s waiting areas – readers may remember the feature covering the appeal. Thanks to donations from the local community and supporters of the hospital, QVH now has a new dedicated play area in the main outpatient department, complete with toys, books and interactive games to help entertain the hospital’s youngest visitors. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with one patient’s family saying, “Wonderful staff, friendly and informative. Excellent

Camilla Slattery, Head of Fundraising for QVH Charity said “We want to thank everyone who has supported us over the last year. It is only thanks to the generosity of supporters including the readers of East Grinstead Living that we can fund these truly wonderful initiatives. These improvements have already made a real difference to QVH and its patients.” There are still many projects QVH Charity would like to fund with your support. If you are interested in fundraising or finding out more about how you can support the QVH Charity please email Camilla.slattery@nhs. net or phone 01342 414170. More fundraising initiatives will be announced in the East Grinstead Living during the course of the year.

IMPROVING YOUR SMILE CAN NEVER BE WRONG! At the local Riverview Dental Centre in Forest Row there are many services offered to patients, quite aside from regular dental work. For instance, dental implants which are titanium root replacements, inserted into the jaw bone, used to support an artificial tooth. When insufficient tooth remains to restore a tooth, a dental implant is often a better option. Such implants can also be used to support dentures. Here is a short Q&A with Dr. Patel of the Riverview Dental Centre to find out more. What services over and above usual dentistry can you offer clients? The key additional services we provide are implants, cosmetic adult orthodontics (straightening) and cosmetic makeovers. With 10 years’ experience in providing both implants and teeth straightening, I am highly qualified in the both fields. The implant system we use is Neoss, which is a global-research based system with a high success rate.

The Halifax & High Beeches By Clive Smith

Flight Sergeant Tom Gallantry was the pilot of 76 Squadron Halifax II which set off from its base at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, at 19:15 hours on 11th March 1943 on an operation to Stuttgart. This is his story, which is also the story behind the fate of High Beeches House, Handcross, near Turners Hill. In Tom’s own words: ‘It was March 1943, the eleventh to be precise. I had celebrated my twenty-first birthday a month before we had completed 22 bombing raids on Germany. I had just been granted a commission. We were an integrated, happy crew, well satisfied with each other's expertise and input and it was beginning to look as if we might now complete our first tour of operations. Two crew numbers, Len Exton, the navigator and Bill Middleton the flight engineer were somewhat older than the rest of us, but the only relevance that had was that they were probably a stabilising influence on the others of us. Alex McLure, our Canadian wireless operator was, because of his engagement and impending marriage to a local girl, somewhat quieter and he naturally liked to spend most of his off-duty time with his fiancée. The bomb aimer, Johnny Higgins, another Canadian, was a devilmay-care young fellow whilst the two gunners, Ken Whitmore, our twenty-year old mid-upper gunner, and Tommy Farrer, our Canadian reargunner, made up the rest of the crew. We were looking forward to Spring and the end of the long, cold winter nights and tonight was to be our ninth mission in fourteen nights. During those fourteen nights we had visited Cologne, Essen, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremburg twice, St. Nazaire and Berlin and we hoped that tonight's target might be one of the less heavily defended and less distant ones. We were therefore not too over-joyed when the curtain was rolled back in the briefing room to see that the target was Stuttgart in Southern Germany, a round trip of some fourteen hundred miles. We had been there before in the previous November but the only thing I remembered about that was that we had returned safely from it. Our wonderful ground crew were all there to assure us that the aircraft was in tip-top condition and to see us off with their usual jokes and we knew that they would be there to welcome us when we returned. These highly skilled men; engine and airframe fitters, riggers, armourers, radio and instrument mechanics,

never let us down and were ever ready to give advice and guidance whenever asked. They are the unsung heroes of Bomber Command and we owe our lives in great part to their skill and hard work under the most difficult conditions. After a final cigarette we all clambered aboard, started the engines, carried out our usual checks and taxied out to the end of the runway. Take Continues over the page.

THE HALIFAX & HIGH BEECHES CONTINUED

off was to be at about seven o‘clock so everything was pitch black except for the guide lights on the taxying track and the dimmed lights of the flare path. On receipt of the green light from the airfield controller we turned onto the runway and I opened up the throttles and started the takeoff. I climbed to operational height, leveled off, checked all systems and continued on our set course whilst the rest of the crew carried out their usual duties. The two gunners kept a constant look out for enemy night fighters and also for our own aircraft flying around us. The wireless operator obtained radio bearings which he passed to the navigator so that he could keep a regular check on our position and timing. The bomb aimer tried to map read as well as keep a look out and the flight engineer continually monitored engine performance and fuel consumption. We reached the target at some time around midnight. As an experienced crew I felt that we should decide at what height to bomb from and so approaching the target I noted where the heaviest concentrations of flak (anti-aircraft fire) were bursting. The Halifax’s and Lancasters were flying at about eighteen to twenty thousand feet. The Stirlings were down around ten thousand feet so I decided to make our bombing run at twelve thousand feet and thus avoid the worst of the anti-aircraft fire. The bomb aimer picked out the aiming point in the light of the flares and from the coloured markers dropped by the pathfinders, and we started our bombing run. This was always the most nerve-wracking part of the raid

Crash Site at Handcross (© Crown Copyright 1936)

because the idea was to keep the aircraft at a constant height and speed and on a straight course running up to the target. Then, after dropping the bombs, we had to continue like this for another ten seconds in order to take a photograph of our bombs bursting - hopefully on or near to the aiming point. This was the most vulnerable time because it allowed the enemy radar time to plot our position and to get an accurate sight on us with their antiaircraft guns. However, with the optimism of youth and the "it won’t happen to us" attitude we unloaded our bombs, high explosive and incendiary... and then it all happened. There was a series of almighty bangs, the aircraft was tossed about like a cork and immediately the struggle began to right our wounded Halifax and get away from whatever was doing this damage to us. What had obviously happened was that some eagle-eyed German

radar operator had spotted a blip on the screen showing a stupid pilot flying at a different height from most of the other attackers and so leaving himself wide open to radar predicted anti-aircraft fire. However, we were still in the air and more or less right side up so I turned away from the target and on to our compass course for home. We then began to take stock of our damage. We had lost height and were down to about ten thousand feet, the starboard engine was giving no power and I was unable to feather the propeller because of mechanical damage (the propeller blades would normally be rotated in an emergency to stop them spinning and cut down their drag through the air) so it just continued to wind-mill round, consequently giving a fair amount of drag. The other three engines seemed to be performing alright so by giving them more power I was able

to maintain our height. The bomb doors were jammed in a half-closed position but the most serious faults were that our elevator cables had been severed and the electrical relays were out of action thus leaving us wide open to attack from enemy night-fighters. The lack of elevator control; that is, the ability to keep the aircraft from diving or climbing, was much more serious. Fortunately, the trimming tabs on the elevators were still operating but by judicious and constant use of the trimming wheel I was able to maintain a more or less reasonable position in the air. There were two options open to us now. We could turnaround and head for Switzerland, a neutral country, and be interned for the rest of the war, or we could struggle along in the hope of getting back to England. As captain of the aircraft I had no hesitation in taking the latter. Ken and Tommy, our air gunners, and Johnnie the bomb aimer continued to search the skies for enemy fighters, fortunately without seeing any. l doubt whether I should have been able to take any evasive action if one had attacked us, so once again Lady Luck was riding with us. All this time Mac, the wireless operator, was beavering away trying to repair his radio set which had been put out of action by the enemy gunfire and Len, our navigator, peaceful and calm as ever, was trying to calculate our position by using astro-navigation. Bill, the flight engineer, kept a constant check on our fuel consumption and engine performance and tried, regrettably without success, to organise some better form of

control over the elevators. We were also carrying a second pilot, also Canadian who was making his first operational trip. He had no specific task to perform but was just gaining experience before venturing out with his own crew. He was very quiet and as far as I can recall the only time he spoke was when he asked if every trip was as exciting and dangerous as this! We carried on in this fashion, slowly losing height and gradually falling behind the main bomber stream, feeling very lonely and vulnerable to attack by fighters or ground fire until some forty miles from the French coast the port outer engine began to overheat and show signs of dying on us. Eventually the flight engineer had to stop the engine, feather the propeller and open up the two remaining inboard engines in order to keep us in the air. The French coast was indeed a welcome sight but even more welcome was the English coast as we passed over it just to the west of Brighton and continued to head inland. I had already decided to try to land at one of the airfields dotted around that part of south east England; we had on a previous occasion landed at RAF Tangmere and I felt confident enough to put down there. We were by now down to about four thousand feet when the two inboard engines which had so bravely kept us airborne began to show signs of the strain which they had been put under. Normally these two wonderful Rolls Royce Merlin engines could have coped reasonably well but because of our half-open bomb doors and the wind milling propeller of the starboard outer

engine they had been asked to operate for several hours under much greater pressure than normal. So, it was not too much of a surprise when they began to overheat and looked like giving up the ghost. Under those conditions I felt that it would be suicidal to attempt a landing in the pitch dark at an unfamiliar airfield. You can only ride your luck so far and we seemed to have used more than our fair share already that night. I told the crew that we would have to bail out and ordered them to put on their parachutes and come to the front of the aircraft and go out through the escape hatch in the nose so that I could see them all go. I began to turn the aircraft around so that it was heading back out over the Channel where I hoped it would finally and safely ditch. I don't recall the exact order in which the crew jumped but eventually I was left alone with my poor dying Halifax. I climbed down from my seat, had a final look at the engine instruments, their readings left me in no doubt that I must go, little as I relished the idea. I sat on the edge of the escape hatch facing the rear with my legs dangling in the slipstream. I looked down into the inky blackness and pushed myself out. I saw the tail of the Halifax pass over my head, waited a few seconds and pulled the ripcord. With a loud crack the canopy opened and I was floating through the air. An explosion on the ground and leaping flames told me that the Halifax had not made it to the Channel. The handle of the ripcord was still in my hand so I pushed it inside my battledress jacket and as I did so I felt my cigarettes there.

However, before I could make up my mind to have a smoke something struck me lightly on the face and then I was on the ground. I had narrowly missed a tree and it was one of the branches which had brushed my face. Some ten minutes later I came to an anti-aircraft battery where the soldiers took me in, gave me a cup of tea and telephoned the nearest airfield. Very shortly afterwards and RAF truck arrived to pick me up and take me to Redhill aerodrome. I waited there until it was daylight by which time all the other members of my crew had phoned in and reported their whereabouts. We went off to collect them and, on the way, stopped to see our crashed aircraft still smouldering but with one wing stuck up bravely

What Tom and crew hadn’t realised at the time was that their stricken Halifax had come down on High Beeches house, famous for its well-known Sussex gardens; three servants in residence had been killed. The photo shows not only the extensive impact damage to the rear of the property, but because the building caught fire, the whole roof was destroyed in the blaze and the building was never occupied again.

Testimonial: ‘We used M&M Walker for many jobs at our property including exterior redecoration and found them to be very thorough and reasonable, plus very clean and tidy. We would not hesitate to use again’ - Mrs Lines, the Coach House, Felbridge.  For a free quotation call:
