ALLZONES BUILDING & ROOFING

Testimonial: “Allzones have now skillfully performed 3 build contracts for me over the last few years; covering a range of activities from roofing/hanging tiles/guttering to outdoor landscaping, log cabin erection, building a bridge and interior refurbishment including flooring. They are certainly very experienced, know what they’re doing, are excellent trouble shooters and won’t cut corners. Not only that: they are clean, tidy, polite and reasonably priced. They respect your home, have good attention to detail and provide a good standard of finish. I have no hesitation in recommending them and will be inviting them back next year to do the final stage of my restoration work.” Dr. C. A. Scott Forest Row

Is Vibration Training the fitness short-cut of the century?

Can’t find the time or bear the thought of battling the cold to get to the gym? Thankfully there’s an alternative. Michael Wall of Hire Fitness based nearby East Grinstead brings the gym to you. Hire Fitness is Europe’s largest equipment provider with the very latest and most popular fitness

machines that vibrate at certain frequencies (normally between 30 and 50Hz). The user can perform a variety of exercises on the vibrating plate. It is claimed that a minute of this is equal to 100 sit ups and that 20 minutes is equivalent to a full work out.

GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios. People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex

Have you Overplucked your Eyebrows? Can’t apply great make up? Lips lost their definition and thinning? Hate to be seen without your make-up on? Pretty permanent make-up addresses these problems giving you a beautifully groomed and defined look that can also take years off your appearance and solve your make-up problems. Plus It lasts from morning to

night, day after day, month after month!

Mary Anne

This is a proven safe and easy way you can look better fast, without surgery. You can have more confidence and more time!

Q: What’s the difference between a traditional tattoo and Semi -permanent? A-MaryAnne: A traditional tattoo is done to last, so inks are implanted deeply in lower layers of the dermis. Semi permanent Art be it make up or body, is worked only into the very upper layers of the dermis and with specially formulated pigments; it is a graze of colour and needs to be boosted annually or it will fade away.

Which woman doesn’t want to look her best all the time? Here are some of our customer testimonials: Before

“Just wanted to say how delighted I am with my eyebrows! They have settled down nicely into the perfect colour and shape. We went to Lanzarote for a week and it was a god send to look made up by the pool with just my brows on! I feel like I have had a face lift atAfter a fraction of the price and just look so much smarter and finished! I am a very happy customer and wish I had done it years ago!” Caroline F

Before

“I’m just dropping you a quick line to let you know all is well and I’m loving my new brows! You were of course completely right, my brows did need doing and the shape is amazing. The freedom of not having to wear make-up and still looking ok is fantastic.” Heather K

After

“For years I struggled with drawing in my eyebrows and the time it took that I simply had to do something about it. I am so impressed with my eyebrows now that applying my make-up takes half the time and I look great! Thank you MaryAnne.” Mimi P

Potato, Leek & Carrot Soup So here comes the cold weather, which for me means starting to add soup to the weekly menu. Soup is a great way to use up vegetables in the fridge, or to make a nutritional meal. It is also an easy way of bringing in the seasonal vegetables that are available in abundance from our local farms and producers. As the leaves begin to drop from the trees, it is a great feeling to place a large bowl of soup on the table with chunky pieces of bread , feel warm and ready to take on the long evening to come. This soup can be served in two ways – either as a quick chunky soup, or pureed to make a creamed soup. For me soup is always better the next day, as the spices and herbs have a chance to really infuse, so maybe make it one day, leave it in the fridge and serve the next day.

Method

Ingredients » » » » » » » » »

175 – 200g/6 – 8oz Potato, diced 125g/4.5oz grated carrot 175g/6oz leek (approx. 1) 700ml/1 & quarter pint vegetable stock 1 bay leaf 1 x crushed garlic clove 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil i.e. sunflower, olive, vegetable qtr teaspoon ground cumin Salt & Pepper to taste

If you want to puree the soup » »

5-6 tablespoons of wholemilk 1-2 tablespoon of double cream, crème fraiche or sour cream

• Crush the garlic clove, trim the leek and use the white and pale green of the leek and wash thoroughly in cold water – drain.

it to see if you need any more salt or pepper. Take out the bay leaf. This is then ready to serve as a chunky soup.

• Heat the oil in a saucepan with a heavy base, add the garlic and leek and fry gently over a low heat until they have softened. Now add vegetable stock – this can be done via your favourite vegetable stock cubes, boullion or your own – add bay leaf, cumin and then salt and pepper to taste. Bring to the boil, but keep stirring.

• If you want to puree the soup - carefully (its very hot! So you can leave it to cool a little before you do this) place half of mixture in a blender, or food processor, and blend, pour into a clean saucepan, repeat process with the other half and put into rest of blended soup. Add the milk and bring to the boil – taste again and add seasoning if required, then stir in the cream or crème freche before serving.

• Add the potato and pop a lid on the saucepan and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potato is soft when you place a fork into it. • Add the carrot, and continue simmering for another 2-3 minutes. It is a good idea to re-taste

• Delicious with some granary or sunflower bread. Enjoy – Kate & Rick

Jewellery and Watch Specialist Family Crest Seal Engraving Jewellery Repaired, Designed & Manufactured Watch Repairs & Battery Replacement

Seal Rings have been worn by men of distinction for centuries. The signet ring was originally a Seal Ring - the “mark” of a gentleman. The name “Signet” came from the Latin word signator, the person who puts his seal onto a document. The time taken on each ring and the lack of skilled craftsmen means only a few people have the opportunity to own a seal ring. To purchase a seal signet, with a crest attributed to your family name, creates for you and your family an heirloom of great interest and beauty. Many crest rings are sold as Graduation or 21st Birthday presents and to couples for the gentleman’s wedding ring. Available in Gold or Platinum, plain or stone set, most rings are in ladies and gentleman sizes. At George Knight Jewellers in East Grinstead, you can view your heraldic family crest along with a range of signet rings.

3 CHEERS FOR VOLUNTEERS! Calling all past and present volunteers! We had a fantastic event to celebrate East Grinstead volunteering on 5 October at East Grinstead Museum. As well as a networking event, this was a chance to record volunteering experiences and memories for an exhibition on the development of volunteering in EG, to be mounted by the Museum early next year, and we collected many fascinating stories. The good news is that it’s not too late to take part! If you would like to give us a volunteering story, get in touch with Loral the Volunteer Centre.

Calling all EG community groups! Would you like you group to be included in the Volunteering Exhibition next year? If so, let us know all about your activities and the volunteers who work with you.

Gardening Tips for NOVEMBER Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Vegetables Continue preparing beds for the Spring. Leave ground roughly dug as this allows the winter frosts to help break down the soil clods.

Bulbs Tulip bulbs may still be planted up until about the middle of the month. Lift tender bulbs and store in a cool, dry, dark place after first frosts.

Shrubs and Herbaceous This is a good time to transplant trees and shrubs. When lifting established plants get as much of the root ball as possible and get them planted back into the prepared ground as soon as possible to prevent drying out. Large trees and shrubs will require staking to avoid them moving during

winter storms. Continue to lift, divide and plant herbaceous. Prune evergreens to shape.

Lawns Give your lawn a good raking to lift away accumulations of debris. Keep leaves raked from the lawn. They should be composted.

Roses Rose foliage can harbour insects and diseases, both on the shrub and on the ground. Pull off any rose leaves that are still hanging on, and rake up fallen leaves. Mulch around base of established roses with well rotted manure.

Keep warm this winter with Imberhorne Lane Nursery

Logs available in nets at £3.95 per net, 5 nets for £18 or Dump Bag at £85 delivered & stacked if required. (Equivalent to approx. 35 nets.) All logs are seasoned and cut to approx. 20cm (8 inches).

The Community Play for the Community by Krystyna O’Brien

East Grinstead’s Community Play, ‘Matters of Chance’, written and directed by Jon Oram of Claque Theatre Company, will be performed over twelve nights from 29th November - 11th December 2010 at Sackville School. Celebrating the lives, culture and history of East Grinstead, the play examines how small decisions can lead to us being caught up in huge events; events that have profound effects on our lives. All the characters in the play are based on real people, and their stories are taken from over one hundred interviews recorded during the ‘Talk of the Town’ project. Jon sifted through these to write the final play, during which he recognized common threads running throughout: memories of the war, the bombing of the Whitehall Cinema in 1943, and McIndoe’s ‘Guinea Pigs’. Thus the play is set during the war years 1939-45. It includes a cast of 90 local people from East Grinstead and the surrounding areas, but other volunteers are participating as musicians, stage managers, technicians, set builders, costume fitters, etc. Local schools, clubs, associations and

business groups will also be involved in the project. Noah Nicholson, head of music at Sackville School, is in charge of the music, which will comprise of traditional 1940s Hollywood songs. Jon wrote the lyrics to four of the original songs, with the music composed by Sackville students. Directorial Assistant, Allison Pattison, said, “everyone who walked through the door got a part. No one is turned away, and we are still welcoming people who want to volunteer to work with the professional designers, making props and costumes.” The whole point of a community play is to get everyone involved, after which a legacy is left and people tend to stay together afterwards. It’s a very organic process, and encourages people to learn new skills and to pass these on to the different generations within the community and who knows what doors our younger members will be inspired to open thereafter. As part of the community project, local people will be able to drop in to the design workshop anytime at 24a Birches Industrial Estate, East Grinstead, to see props

and costumes being made, as well as to have a go themselves. Tickets are £12 for adults or £8 for children and can be bought from former Wickenden’s sweet shop, High Street. For more information visit the Community Play’s website on www.egplay.org.uk mailto:cast@egplay.org.uk

Dick whittington & E ast G ri n stead

Dick Whittington is this year’s chosen Chequer Mead pantomime and on taking a closer look the real life Dick Whittington’s legacy actually lives on in this area… ‘Dick Whittington’ is the only pantomime character to be based on a real person, Richard Whittington, the son of an Alderman who was actually born in Gloucestershire sometime in the mid 14th century. Contrary to popular belief, Dick Whittington was not a poor, illtreated orphan who managed against all the odds to work his way up to Lord Mayor. Coming from a wealthy family, he was sent to London to train as a merchant and became very successful, dealing in luxurious silks and velvets from the Orient, some of which would have been transported in a cargo boat, also known as a ‘cat’. Whether this was the inspiration for his fabulous feline friend we can’t be sure, but he did become Lord Mayor of London three times and he did marry Alice Fitzwarren. He made several huge loans to the King and in true philanthropic

style also financed major public projects such as drainage systems, almshouses and hospitals including at Highgate, where legend has it he first heard the sound of bow bells calling him back to the City. Amazingly, Sir Richard Whittington’s charitable bequests are still benefiting people today. The almshouses were entrusted to the management of the Mercers Company who still administers them. Originally they were built on College Hill in the City of London. In the 19th century they were moved to Highgate and then in 1966, the almhouses were rebuilt in Felbridge, where Whittington College provides 56 houses and apartments for elderly ladies and married couples. The charitable bequest has grown so much over the centuries that in 1822 the work of the trust was extended to cover paying an allowance to people on very low incomes. The beneficiaries of these out-pensions, as they are known, now number 300. Even if the legend of Dick Whittington is a mixture of fact & fiction, perhaps the truth is even more amazing. Richard Whittington survived

as a prominent City merchant through turbulent times. Even more astounding, the charitable trust he created nearly 600 years ago is still helping people today. It was said that the greatest sadness of his life was not having any children so he would be delighted that today so many of them are having such a good time following his adventures on the stage. Dick Whittington and His Amazing Cat’ set off on their magical trip to Olde London Town and Morocco from 18th to 30th December at Chequer Mead, East Grinstead so don’t miss your chance to cheer the goodies and boo the baddies by calling the Box Office on 01342 302000.

Carmen’s Story

As with all community plays it’s the volunteers that make it happen...take fifteen year old Carmen Langridge who is currently in year eleven at Sackville Community College. Carmen has been coming along to the Workshop Space since the beginning of September. “I enjoy sewing and I like to volunteer and all the things we are making are fun. My favourite item I’ve made so far is ‘Jim’! a traditional teddy bear”, Carmen tells us. Carmen’s enthusiasm to be in the play was evident the moment she stepped into the Workshop where she auditioned for a part in the play. She explains how her character Shelia Roberts witnessed the Whitehall bombing, in which her sister (Isabella) died while her character was working at the Post Office across the road from the cinema . “It’s upsetting and sad knowing that my character saw what actually happened. Knowing that her younger sister was inside the cinema.” For Carmen the East Grinstead Community play has opened up a new door way of meeting different people...“I’ve met lots of nice new people and made some new friends”. Carmen goes on to explain that Alice Killick who plays Isabella goes to The Michael Hall School with a mutual friend of hers and they have other common interests. “I wouldn’t have met Alice if it weren’t for the play”. This is just one of the many examples of what the community play can give back to the community. ’Matters of Chance’ ( running from Monday 29th November until Saturday 11th December) not only takes place in the play but in real life too! Carmen will be making her own costume with the support of the Design Team, but they need YOUR help! Please do come along and get in contact with either Laura, Vicky, April or Sarah on 07757 553 115
