Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Remember your dogs on the 5th November! By Sue Day
With Bonfire Night approaching you may have already heard fireworks. For many of us we enjoy the sight, smell and sound but what about your dog? Some dogs aren’t bothered and happily sleep through them whilst others love them and sit in the garden staring at the sky watching. But for a great many dogs fireworks can be terrifying and very stressful. It is a good idea to walk your dog earlier in the day before fireworks are likely to be set off as a big danger at this time of year is dogs becoming spooked and running away. Don’t forget to also check what your dog may be picking up on walks after Bonfire Night. Debris from fireworks may look enticing to a dog so be sure to check he isn’t eating anything he shouldn’t. If your dog becomes particularly anxious during fireworks there are a number of measures you can take to help her relax ranging from popping on the TV or Radio as a distraction from the noise to using a DAP diffuser (discuss with your vet) or calming tablets depending on the severity of your dog’s anxiety.
If you are the proud owner of a new puppy watch the fireworks with her, and remain calm while doing so, as this should help acclimatise her to these new sights and sounds. Sadly some dogs are just not comfortable with fireworks and require us to remain as calm and relaxed as possible to help them through this stressful evening!

THE MONTH OF OCTOBER: A CLOSER LOOK... 1. The Anglo-Saxons called October Winterfylleth (or Winterfilth as Tolkien’s hobbits put it) meaning the ‘fullness’ because at the full moon (fylleth) of this month, winter was supposed to begin. The Slavs called it “yellow month”, because of fading of the leaves. 2. The Hunt For Red October is the only film with October in its title to win an Oscar.

3. The month of October is not mentioned at all in any of William Shakespeare’s plays.
If the October moon comes without frost, expect no frost till the moon of November.
4. According to a recent study in Italy, October is the best month for conceiving a boy baby.
If ducks do slide at Hallowtide (around Halloween), At Christmas they will swim; If ducks so swim at Hallowtide at Christmas they will slide.
. St Luke’s Day on the 18th of October is traditionally a day when girls could have some insight into their future marriage prospects. Before going to bed, they were told to put their faces in a mixture of spices, honey and vinegar, and once in bed they must say the following rhyme: St Luke, St Luke, be kind to me, In dreams let me my true love see Also ‘St Luke’s Little Summer’ is so named as this saint’s day is often at the centre of a spell of

Introducing Cranwell Wealth Solutions Tell us about your business? We offer bespoke financial advice - a personal wealth management service, tailored to fit you, from getting on to the property ladder to retirement and ensuring your children will see as much of their inheritance as possible. Everyone has a need for specifically tailored advice. How did you end up sitting where you are? After working for a number of large financial organisations, I felt that the business had become too much about one off transactions rather than building long term relationships. This key principle is the reason I established Cranwell Wealth Solutions. What advice can you offer to our readers regarding personal finance? People often assume they need a large amount of wealth before they seek advice, though this is not the case. The best way to assist people to reach their goals is by giving appropriate advice on an on-going basis. Very few of us manage our finances as best we might,
this is understandable - the financial world is complex and fast changing. Achieving a successful outcome can mean spending huge amounts of time researching choices and options, which most of us are not able to do. So as your financial situation is unique, a personal, tailored service and a long-term relationship Steve Palmer, Principal with a chosen adviser could Cranwell Wealth Solutions be very beneficial and is worthwhile considering for the future. LOCAL HISTORY NOTES
The STENNING Family by Dorothy Hatswell
There are several families whose names run throughout the more recent history of East Grinstead. Among them are the Stenning family. The name derives from the village of Steyning, some twenty miles to the south of our town. When they left there and moved to East Grinstead, is not known but the surname Stenning can be traced back to 169 in our town. John Stenning married Susan Brown here, on November 24th 169 . The next reference we have to the family is the baptism on March 14th 1 16 of another John, also in East Grinstead. Whether he was the son or grandson of the John, married in 169 , is unclear. There is then a gap of over eighty years before the Stennings appear in the surviving records again. In 1 92 a John Stenning, apprentice joiner, comes to the town and sets up his own business. In April 1 98, he married Sarah Lynn. He gives his place of birth as Chailey but by 1841 he is living at his sawmills on the London Road with his wife, Sarah, and sons John, William, Charles and George. Ten years later he has become a farmer. Widowed in 1861, his own burial in the East Grinstead churchyard took place on February 11th 1868.
All members of the family, whether or not concerned with the day-to-day running of the business, appear to have taken an interest in East Grinstead. For instance, there was a public well at the west end of Middle Row and John, then an agent for highly prominent Earl de la Warr, was concerned about its safety. His efforts paid off and the well, which was over eighty feet deep and not fenced, was eventually made secure. The next generation of the family also carried on their fathers’ interests. By 18 1, John’s son, William, is living in Halsford House (sometimes called Halsford Park) now the site of The Stennings, The Timbers and Gwynne Gardens. William had built Halsford House 20 years earlier on land that his father owned at the north end of what was then East Grinstead Common - the common originally stretched from the vicinity of what is now McDonalds down to Felbridge Water at the Star junction. Halsford House was itself set in fifty acres of parkland and had seventeen bedrooms, a billiard room, stables, entrance lodge and various farm buildings - it remained their family home until 1913 when it was sold.

In 18 1, William described himself as a timber merchant aged 6 , born in East Grinstead. His household is made up of his wife, Mary Child, his children, Fanny Augusta, John Cuthbert, Katherine Mary, William Vicissimus, Charles Horace, Isabella Lennox and Alan Herbert. All of them unmarried. The family is looked after by five servants. Of the sons, only William and Charles give their occupation as timber merchants. George is the rector of Beaulieu in Hampshire and is found visiting his mother at Halsford House in 1891 but does not seem to have been part of the business or East Grinstead after his ordination. John Cuthbert is an East India merchant and Alan is still at school. 10 years later, in 1881 William’s son, John Cuthbert Stenning has now moved away from East Grinstead and is boarding with his wife, Mary, in Warrior Square, Hastings while his three children: John H., Bernard W. and Harold are living at Halsford House in East Grinstead with their paternal grandparents. Whether this was a short break is not known but by a strange coincidence, Peyton Blakiston, the brother of the vicar of East Grinstead, was also staying in Warrior Square on the same night. John Cuthbert later moved to Beckenham, Kent having been widowed. He remarried to another Mary, who was born in Jamaica (there were no children from his second marriage).
refers to East Grinstead as “One of the oldest-fashioned places in the country.” He also states that the ashes of the martyrs were seen “many years ago” when the highway was being repaired. This seems to have been a rather fanciful idea... The ashes would have just been scattered over the surface of the dirt road but to discover them two hundred years later and identify them seems highly unlikely! When he died in February 1922 the S.A.S published an obituary extolling his support for the society. It also mentions that he had been married three times but I have only been able to trace two wives. Alan Stenning was later to edit and revise his oldest brother’s history of East Grinstead. With thanks to the Felbridge & District History Group for their input (www.felbridge.org.uk).
W.H.Hills, the historian, who wrote “The History of East Grinstead” in 1906, dedicated the book to “John Cuthbert Stenning, Esq., who was the first to write a history of East Grinstead and whose great knowledge and valuable collection of documents concerning the Town have been freely placed at my disposal, this Volume is respectfully dedicated by his grateful servant,”. A copy of the document referred to is in our research room in the Sussex Archaeological Society (S.A.S.), Volume 20 for 1868. John Cuthbert was also an enthusiastic early photographer and did work for the society over many years. Although he spent his latter years living elsewhere, in an article he wrote he

Wakehurst Place Kew’s Country Home
On our doorstep, but so often taken for granted, Wakehurst is the country home of West London’s Kew – more famous for its Royal Botanic Gardens, alongside the River Thames, than Kew Palace itself. The 00-acre Wealden estate in Ardingly sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Sussex High Weald. It was chosen by Kew in 196 as an alternative site for propagating plants as it had a higher rainfall than at Kew, richer soil and different microclimates, allowing the range of plants in the organisation’s collections to be greatly extended. The name Wakehurst is of Saxon origin, ‘hyrst’ meaning wood and ‘wake’ possibly coming from the ‘wak’, meaning moist or watery. When Kew moved in, Wakehurst was unkempt, having lacked care and attention for some 18 months since it had been left to the nation by the former owners. For the past 49 years, horticulturalists from
Kew have been transforming the landscape to create one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. Historical records of the West Sussex estate date back to the thirteenth century when a William de Wakehurst purchased land from Phillip de Crauele, or Crawley. However, it was Gerald Loder (later Lord Wakehurst), who bought the estate in 1903, and his head gardener Alfred Coates who began amassing the outstanding collection of trees and shrubs. Gerald Loder’s father had come from High Beeches, the estate at Lower Beeding, which itself became a well-respected garden open to the public before being sold. Gerald became MP for Brighton in 1889, holding several government positions as well as being a keen sportsman and successful in business. Leaving politics in 1906, he devoted himself to horticulture. The story goes that when Alfred Coates went to the House of Lords for his interview, Loader asked him, “Well, Coates, what shall it be; flowers, or trees and shrubs?” and Coates is said to have replied, “I reckon trees and shrubs, sir”, and on this exchange Wakehurst’s unique collection, built up over the next 32 years, was founded. With his main interests of conifers, rhododendrons and Southern Hemisphere plants, particularly those from New Zealand, Loder was kept busy as stock arrived almost daily from British nurseries as well as from abroad; there was seed from plant collecting expeditions and crated plants which had survived long sea voyages.

Sheer enthusiasm and competition between the great gardens of the day led to an almost explosive increase in the number and variety of plants collected by Loder. His notebooks, preserved at Kew, details purchases he made, while his 1908 plant catalogue ran to 300 pages and showed that, within five years of purchasing the estate, there were some 3,000 species and cultivars at Wakehurst Place. Today that figure is closer to 15,000 with the work Kew has done over the past half a century. With the estate shaped by Loder, the development undertaken by the next owners, Sir Henry and Lady Eve Price, was not insignificant. Having bought Wakehurst in 1938, Sir Henry loved plants and took great interest in the estate which in his care became widely admired. He is, however, probably best known as the ‘fifty-shilling tailor’ - his highly successful business had introduced the suit to those who previously could not afford one.
Sir Henry and Lady Eve Price loved the house and gardens, and together they restored the 16th century mansion house and continued to develop the gardens with a blend of skill and enthusiasm. They became formidable plant breeders and major exhibitors at the Royal Horticultural Society show with several award-winning plants, including Viburnum ‘Eve Price’ and Piris ‘Henry Price’ named after them. In 1963 when Sir Henry bequeathed Wakehurst to the nation, it had benefited from over 60 years’ worth of enthusiastic nurturing from owners passionate about plants, and backed by outstanding head gardeners. As Kew moved in, the emphasis shifted and Wakehurst grew into its new role; no longer a private estate but a public botanic garden, accessible to an interested public. Basic work began to construct a public entrance, toilets and a car park, installing a network of hardsurface paths while Wakehurst began to benefit from Kew’s constant plant collecting activities but with conservation firmly to the forefront. Even in those early days, Kew’s scientists were among the first to sound warning shots about the loss of important plants and habitats. The reference collections of birch and southern beech trees were established, and those for skimmias and hypericums were planned. The now hugely popular Himalayan Glade and highly colourful walled garden, behind the mansion, were developed. One single night saw more havoc and destruction at Wakehurst than two world wars combined. In the early hours of 16th October 1987 an almost unimaginable 15,000 trees were lost to the force of

Putting a price on priceless. In this issue, Annie Streeter and Jane Cowans, Agents at the Haywards Heath office of NFU Mutual, answer your questions about valuing your possessions: Which items do homeowners typically undervalue or overlook when calculating their home contents insurance? Artwork, jewellery and watches, especially those items which have been inherited which may have appreciated in value without anyone realising. We recommend that valuations are revisited every three years as things like gold and art can appreciate steeply over this time. NFU Mutual offers access to valuation experts with wide ranging experience. If something is of sentimental value, surely it doesn’t matter what it’s worth? Enjoying an object or piece of art for the memories it holds and its significance to your family is part of the beauty of heirlooms; however, if the item is lost, damaged or stolen, it affects a family’s ability to pass it down. By correctly insuring items, future generations will not miss out on their sentimental importance or financial benefits. How common are insurance claims for jewellery & watches? lost or stolen jewellery and watches - the sentimental loss can be equal to, if not greater, than the financial loss suffered. What should I look for when choosing an insurer for my home & contents? It’s important to look at the ‘whole package’ – service, cover and price. It can be tempting to simply select on the basis of cost; however, you should satisfy yourself that the level of cover and service provided will meet your needs. The true test of an insurance company is will come when you have to make a claim. It’s well worth talking to other people about their experiences and asking for testimonials. near-hurricane force gusts. Gerald Loder had built ‘shelter belts’ to protect against the weather, but they proved totally ineffective given the power of the winds that night, the worst storm since 1703. A knock-on effect of the Great Storm was to destroy many habitats for wildlife, bats in particular being evicted from fallen trees. Today, Wakehurst is again not only a place of great beauty thanks to tireless work since 1987, but a model of practical conservation. The completion of Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank in August 2000 was the realisation of a dream that will bring nothing but good to endangered plants from these islands and around the globe. The centre has
become an international resource and the largest repository for wild-flower seed in the world. Those great men who started and developed the estate would be impressed if they could see it today. But their spirit lives on, so in a way, perhaps they can... At Wakehurst, the 15,000 different types of plant contains five species that are totally extinct in the wild and 300 more included in the list of threatened and endangered species. The site has become an important one not only for visiting scientists, but for thousands of school children each year on educational trips, plus those attending the variety of adult education courses. It is a rare visitor who leaves the gardens without being better informed. The gardens are open daily (except 24th-25th December) from 10am. www.kew.org/wakehurst.

A HIGHLY MEMORABLE NIGHT FOR THE TOWN
Cinestock: Oliver Tully & Danny Bridle
Last month, East Grinstead staged an amazing first! In an incredible feat of organisation, an open air screening of ET was staged in town by Cinestock. With an estimated audience of nearly 1000, people thronged the High Street for a superb evening of both live music and cinema. The musical talents of Jono Harrison, Meg Jordan Paul and the Dunton Orchestra entertained the expectant crowd.
Food and drink was available from street vendors and local restaurants and pubs who stayed open to enhance the general ‘ambience’. The crowd was thrilled by Spielberg’s masterpiece - there was laughter, excitement, and hardly a dry eye in ‘the house’. Money was raised throughout the night in support of the QVH Peanut Ward. Overall this has been a triumph
of local community spirit, and Cinestock wish to extend their thanks to the many movie fans, sponsors and volunteers who made it such a fantastic evening. Certainly this looks set to become a regular fixture in the town’s event diary! Anyone wishing to find out more can search ‘Cinestock’ on Facebook or visit www.cinestock.co.uk Photos used with kind permission of Paul Furmanski

Is your TV volume unbearable for others? How did you get involved with the hear at home system? My dad suffered with hearing loss in later life and over a period of a few years he had to gradually increase the volume of the television in order to hear it. This increase in volume eventually became too much for my mum who would quite often go and sit in another room to escape from it - they even bought a second television and this was sad because it meant they spent much of their time sitting in different rooms. We had heard of induction loop systems before used in places like libraries, banks and theatres, that help people with hearing aids to hear conversations much clearer but we didn’t know that smaller Loop systems were available and could be used for home use. We purchased one and installed it and the results were instant and amazing. Not long after this my mother and father-in- law were suffering in the same way and so we installed a system for them as well! They too found it was the perfect solution to something that was becoming a bit of an issue. And that was 10 years ago and they still comment on just how much the loop system has transformed their lives!
Derek - owner of Hear at home
What customer feedback have you had so far? Our customers are always very happy because from the initial demonstration they can see, and hear the benefits immediately. Comments vary from “I wish we had known about this years ago” and “We don’t argue about the telly anymore” to “At least we can stay in the same room together now” . It’s so nice for me to be doing something that I know really makes a difference to people’s lives.
Do you wear hearing aids?
How does it benefit people’s quality of living? Quite often it is not the person with the hearing problems who is suffering but instead it’s their family members who have to suffer the loud volume of the television. An Induction loop system however can really transform people’s lives and restore the calm in the house. The person with the hearing aids simply switches their hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting and they can then pick up the television sound directly and not from the speakers of the television.
What is your background? I worked in Customer Service roles for many years before moving onto Facilities Management and Health and Safety Consultancy. It is probably that which prompted me to start up a business supplying and installing the Induction Loop Systems as I became very aware of just how many people suffer with hearing loss problems and the daily
issues that they and their families face because of it. With my customer service background, we now offer a friendly, fully inclusive service which includes a free demonstration to customers in their own home.
Is everyone else in your home suffering because you need to have the television volume turned up so loud? Worry no more, our low cost home loop system could transform your lives and restore harmony in the home. Call Derek now for more details or to arrange a Free ‘no pressure’ demonstration in your own home. www.hearathome.co.uk 01342-326977

Local Business Country Traditionals of Forest Row Country Traditionals was started up some twenty years ago from a barn on London Road in Forest Row. Nicola and Simon Tame bought the business in July 2012 from the previous owner who was retiring. They’d started up their own business, Artyfarty Designs - Home Accessories, over 20 years ago and became friendly with him whilst they were all exhibiting at the Country Living Magazine shows in London. The pottery to be found at Country Traditionals is handcrafted in Boleslawiec Poland, at the world famous Ceramic Artystyczna pottery works. This handcrafted stoneware is meant for real life and every day use; therefore it is oven/aga, microwave & dishwasher safe. The colours on offer are mostly blues/creams with a touch of green which mix beautifully together to make a stunning display in any home, both traditional and modern. Patterns such as sloe-berry, love-leaf, hearts, spots, stars, etc. Items such as mugs, jugs, plates, bowls, tea pots, lasagne/baking dishes & more can be found. Country Traditionals receive a delivery from Poland every couple of months, and are always adding new items/patterns to the range, also supplying many trade customers throughout the uK. There is a very busy online side to the business, with wedding lists for lucky brides to be!
Nicola says, ‘The enjoyable part of running this business is getting in new designs and the wonderful feedback we get from all our loyal and new customers. We know that once someone has bought or been given their first piece of our wonderful pottery they will be back for more, it can almost become an addiction to keep collecting it”!. ‘There may be another shop in the pipeline, it’s just finding the right town, location/premises and of course great staff who are the key asset to any business! We are very lucky at Country Traditionals to have such a brilliant team of staff ; two of our ladies have been with the business since day one!’ To visit Country Traditionals and see what they have to offer simply look out for the blue Pottery Barn sign on the road from East Grinstead to Forest Row A22 London Road ( Friends removals yard) there is ample free parking available and you will receive a warm welcome.Open Thurs-Sat 10am -4pm

The Seven Deadly Internet Sins By Jessica Whyte, of East Grinstead based ‘Love Letters Publishing’
At one time or another, most of us will have been guilty of a faux-pas on Facebook or a trip-up on Twitter, made an idiot of ourselves on Instagram or embarrassed ourselves by email. So, what are the seven deadly internet sins that you need to be aware of? Deadly sin #1 Nocializing Nocializing happens when you’re out in a social setting and are supposedly interacting with real live people who you are actually friends with (not just ‘Facebook friends’ with). Yet somehow you just can’t stop yourself surfing the internet on your mobile or tablet. Deadly sin #2 Typerventilating Time to ‘fess up. Have you ever bombarded someone using instant messaging at rapid speed, one message tumbling after the other until either your hand loses the ability to type or the person you are rapid-firing at shuts down their computer? If so, it’s time to breathe into an imaginary paper bag because you have been guilty of typerventilating. Deadly sin #3 Having an awkward malware reunion You’ve kept them on your email contacts list, even though you haven’t contacted them in years. Then a computer virus hacks your email account and sends your ex-friend junk mail. Panicking, you then contact them to say ‘hi’ with an unconvincing excuse about living in a remote area/the dog eating your email/ long-term amnesia.
Deadly sin #6 Emailing a send-and-run You’ve got bad news to impart or you have been delaying admitting something unpleasant via email. You know you should deal the blow as quickly and painlessly as possible but you keep putting it off. So you wait until the very last email of the day, or leave it until you’re about to head off on holiday. That way you won’t be around for the fallout until the following day or week. Any angry or upset response will simply be greeted by an ‘out of office’ reply. Deadly sin #7 Feeding the blogosfear A new ‘blogosfear’ phenomenon is gripping the nation; the fear of being quoted or turning up as a character in someone’s blog. Are you guilty of writing about someone or naming and shaming them in your online blog? If you want to make friends and influence people, then don’t get too personal when you blog. For more information about East Grinstead-based content agency, Love Letters Publishing, see: www.loveletterspublishing.co.uk.
Sudoku
© Kevin Stone [www.brainbashers.com]
Deadly sin #4 Comment-messaging Mostly occurring on Facebook, a comment-message should have been a short and snappy comment left after someone’s status update but turns into paragraphs of questions and information. It should have been an email, but it wasn’t. Congratulations, you have officially killed the comment thread. Deadly sin #5 Posting a gloatgram

A gloatgram is a little bit of harmless boasting on Instagram about your amazing new job/loving partner/exotic holiday or other generally envyinducing fact about your life. The occasional gloatgram can be excused, but if every Instagram post becomes a good old gloat, it’s time to get yourself in check.

HELPFUL HALLOWEEN RECIPES
GREEN SPOOKY WITCH FINGERS These biscuits are a perfect Halloween treat
INGREDIENTS:
WHAT TO DO:
1 egg
1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract & food colouring in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder (or bicarbonate of soda) and salt, continually beating;
1 teaspoon almond extract
2. Chill in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3. Preheat oven to 160 C / Gas mark 3. Lightly grease baking tray.
3 0g (12 oz) plain flour
4. Remove dough from fridge. Take one heaped teaspoon at a time and place onto a flour-covered surface or greaseproof paper. Roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped biscuit. Press an almond into one end of each biscuit to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze biscuit near the tip and again near the centre of each to give the impression of knuckles, then use a knife to mark it, if you wish, to give it a more haggered appearance. Continue making fingers as above until all the dough is used up. Place the finger-shaped biscuits on the baking tray.
22 g (8 oz) butter 12 g (4 1/2 oz) icing sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder (or Bicarbonate of soda) 1 teaspoon salt 100g (4 oz) whole almonds 1 tube red decorating icing (optional: make your own red icing with icing sugar & food colouring) 1 teaspoon green food colouring (or another colour of your choice)
. Bake in the preheated oven until the biscuits are slightly golden in colour, 20 to 2 minutes. 6. Remove the almond from the end of each biscuit & squeeze a small amount of red icing into the cavity. Replace the almond and press down to cause the icing to ooze out around the tip of the biscuit. . See the horrified looks as you serve up the fingers as a Halloween treat!

Gardening in October By Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery
Autumn planting
Shrubs and Hedges
To do or not to do? – that is the question. I’m a fan of sorting the garden out in the autumn, not least because in the Spring you wake up one morning and start to see the reward for all your efforts.
If you’re planning a new hedge then you can buy it now bareroot. It’s a good time to plant trees and shrubs as the ground is warm but moist creating perfect conditions for them. They will establish well ready for next Summer.
Perennials If you have tender perennials in the borders, now is the time to lift them, pelargoniums, half hardy fuchsias, dahlias, move them indoors or into a greenhouse. With the dahlia tubers, clean and dry them off and wrap them in newspaper and leave in a cool dry place over winter. Plants with good seedheads leave for the birds to feed on. Some grasses and perennials can give good winter interest when they glisten in the frosts so leave some plants for winter border interest.
Bulbs Now is the time to finish off your bulb planting ready for the Spring. Your daffodils are probably already planted but now is perfect timing for the tulips and hyacinths.
Containers and Pots
As last month, maintenance and repair. Fill any bare patches, scarify and hollow tine and then apply a good autumn feed.
Fruit and vegetables Sprouts and leeks will be ready this month as well as the autumn cauliflowers. Onions, shallots and garlic can be kept in a dry, cool and bright place. When the soil is cleared of all your crops dig it over and work in garden compost . Enjoy the garden, get out early as the nights are drawing in quite fast and you need to make the most of the late autumn sunshine. Take time to enjoy the blaze of colour that Autumn throws at us…
% 10
You may have done these last month but if not get out and do them now. Put you bulbs in and then make the pots look pretty for the winter with a range of autumn and winter bedding. It cheers you up on those dull winter days.

We all know the story of the Gunpowder Plot of 160 when 13 conspirators planned to blow up Parliament and kill King James I, Fawkes, of course, was arrested while guarding explosives. People in London lit bonfires that night to celebrate the failure of the plot, and an act of Parliament was passed to appoint the date as a day of thanksgiving for the “joyful deliverance of James I”. This act remained in force for 2 4 years, until 18 9. However it is still celebrated to this day. As it is just round the corner, here are some facts about Guy Fawkes, gunpowder and fireworks: • The only place in the uK that does not celebrate Bonfire Night is St. Peter’s School in York which Guy Fawkes attended as a boy. In their words, “We don’t burn effigies of old boys” out of respect for their former pupil. • Guy Fawkes wasn’t actually the head honcho conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, but he had one of the most important roles as it was he who guarded the gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament. • Physicists from the Institute of Physics have calculated that the 2, 00kg of gunpowder Fawkes hid would have wreaked damage almost 00 metres from the centre of the explosion. • Gunpowder was invented in China while alchemists attempted to create a potion of immortality. Chinese military forces started using gunpowder-based weapons and explosives against the Mongols whom continually attempted to invade and breach city fortifications on China’s northern borders. It is believed that this ‘recipe’ was then
spread via the Middle East to Europe. Fireworks were first produced by the Italians in the city of Florence.
Discovery of the Gunpowder Plot (c. 1823), Henry Perronet Briggs
The first recorded fireworks display in England was at the wedding of King Henry VII to Elizabeth of York in 1486. Fireworks steadily gained popularity during the reign of Henry VIII. By Elizabethan times (1 8-1603) there was a fireworks master created by the Queen. Later still, James II (1633 - 1 01) even knighted his fireworks master having enjoyed an amazing show of fireworks at his coronation. • Dummies have been burned on bonfires since as long ago as the 13th century, initially to drive away evil spirits. • The word ‘guy’ actually comes from the name Guy Fawkes. It originally meant “an ugly, repulsive man” but, throughout the years, simply became another word for “man”. As a word it actually ‘emigrated’ to America with the English immigrants of the day. It dropped out of use in England in everyday speech, but we absorbed it back again with the coming of American movies! • Despite the high security that already exists, The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard before the state opening which has been held in November since 1928. The idea is to ensure no modern-day Guy Fawkes is concealed in the cellars! Ironically the man, Guy Fawkes, is now remembered far more in common consciousness than James I whose deliverance from death is the moment we’re all supposed to be celebrating! We wish you all an enjoyable and safe Bonfire Night!

AN ARCHITECT’S VIEW
Designing for Old Age By Phillip Mumford, Cowan Architects
O
ld age is not an illness but comes to us all, bringing with it stiff joints and creaking bones. Equally, infirmity and old age do not necessarily go together. But maintaining an independent lifestyle in your own home, whatever your changing circumstance, needs only a little thought and smart design. Addressing the factors of an ailing body and a more sedentary lifestyle can still be handled with subtlety and need not involve a move. Careful design considerations can be used to avoid many difficulties, including bending and an increased propensity to trip over small height changes. Level access throughout the home and garden will lessen the risk of falls and automatic garage doors prevent strain. Access to kitchens and bathrooms have to be safe and uncomplicated while raised WCs and a wet room with a fold-down shower seat will avoid the difficulties of getting into and out of a bath and ultimately giving longer independence. A major issue is likely to be your need to get from one storey to another and you might need to consider a lift, such as a stair-lift though some staircases are too small or not suitable. Alternatives are a through-floor which may not be as expensive as you might think. Improving views, particularly in the living rooms and kitchen, can be achieved by lowering window sills and the maximising of natural light will give a happier environment. Arthritic hands manage levers better than knobs so a change of the ironmongery on doors and cupboards around the house will be a great help to arthritic hands. Handrails that are robust and simple (avoid the designer look) should be positioned on strong walls, while shallow steps with a handrail are easier to negotiate and more desirable than ramps
unless a wheelchair is needed. In this case, avoid the problems of getting stuck by replacing gravel driveways and paths with bonded gravel. In the kitchen avoid low and awkward cupboards while non-slip surfaces can be applied to areas where there may be spills. High level fridges minimise unnecessary bending and lifting can be reduced using ovens with sliding doors that act as a safe shelf. Instant boil taps might offer an alternative to heavy kettles while induction hobs will cut the likelihood of unnecessary burns. Internal finishes can be made for easy maintenance and regularly accessed sockets put at waist height. If there is a need for wheelchair use, space becomes a factor as in Britain most doorways, halls and passages would need widening to allow freedom of movement. Basins and work surfaces would also have to be altered to be at the right height. Smart technology is no longer the preserve of the young with lighting, heating, security, opening doors and windows and much more managed via the internet at the touch of a button. Designing for old age or sudden infirmity is not about making your home institutional but keeping it comfortable and desirable, adding value while protecting the quality of your life. Finding Fabulous Fungi being in a Classification/Kingdom unto their own. They range in form, from yeast and moulds, to the edible or inedible mushrooms that we are most familiar with. But due to this range we actually come into contact with them more often those most will realise. Secret and elusive, their existence being a mystery until they bear fruit which we know as mushrooms, toadstools or moulds. The main body of the organism consists of tiny strands known as mycelium. Although tiny and almost invisible for a majority of the time, they are probably the most important organisms on the planet. Important as they are, little is known about this Kingdom which has been estimated at 1.5 million to 5 million species.
Autumn is the time of year that probably gets most foragers most exuberated! After the heady excitement and frantic picking of the new spring herbs things seem to plateau in Summer. The days are longer and the frenetic energy of Spring is but a distant memory. Fruits are ripening and there is a bit of a waiting game on our hands. Patience being the order of the day. But Autumn is different. For it is at this time that the fungi season starts in earnest. Now don’t get me wrong, there are fungi present all year round, but Autumn is when they come into their own. Fungi are probably one of the most fascinating of the natural world. They are neither animal, vegetable or mineral,
What we do know though, is that in the wild, there are a wide variety of edible species and deadly species alike. While I always advocate that a person forages with care and never eats anything without 100% identification, this is most important when foraging for fungi. There is no room for error with fungi, for there are some species that there is no known cure for the effects of the toxins held within. Fungi provide the trees with minerals and metals and the trees, in return, provide water and sugars. The mycelium of the fungi wrap around or tap into the roots and then extend out to the next tree. This is very important as the trees use this not only for the nutrients but also as a means of communication. Just like the World Wide Web (internet) for us. Young trees growing in shade are able to gather the nutrients they require for growth through this process. The fungi also

is based on numerous factors, the shape of the fungi, the size, the smell, the taste, the habitat and spore print. Habitat is very important as most fungi have a symbiotic relationship with particular trees or plants. Spore print is the most important identification tool. Fungi spore are of a particular colour, depending on the family or individual species. Sometimes a microscope is required to look at the shape of the spore in order to identify it 100%. I often get told by people that they don’t like mushrooms. Taste and texture being the most common cited reason for the dislike. But in the wild they come in a variety textures from being like chicken breast (Chicken of the woods, Laetiporus sulphureus) to silky soft texture of the cooked Parasol Mushroom, Lepiota procera. The smells and tastes are as varied as the number of species and could be further apart from the limited selection of the supermarket. I would encourage everyone to start taking notice of the fungi growing around them at this time of year. But NEVER eat anything unless 100% sure of what it is. break down hard wood and return this nutrient rich source back into the ecosystem.

When foraging for fungi we need to engage all our senses and most important we need to slow down. It is amazing how camouflaged they can be. Identification
