Dear Sir or Madam,

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

The Ruins at Brambletye by Garen Ewing

Poking your head through the foliage that lines the south side of Forest Way, about half a mile from its bisection with the A22 at Forest Row, you may find yourself confronted by three ancient stone towers rising above the trees that mask the still-humble River Medway on its route towards the Kent countryside. This is many people’s first glimpse of a structure that provides much

mystery and romance within the remains of its tantalising Jacobean architecture, but not a lot in the way of hard facts.

brothers after his widowed mother married the 2nd Earl of Dorset (and creator of Sackville College) when he was 13.

Some facts, however, can be extracted by studying the clues carved into the local sandstone that make up the honey-hued ashlar blocks. The date 1631 is accompanied by the initials C H M in a lozenge at the top of the central tower, and a weathered coat of arms above the door aides their interpretation - the house was the abode of one Henry Compton and his second wife, Mary Browne.

The old manor at Brambletye had been one of the most important of the district, detailed in the Domesday Book, and handed down through the connected families of Montague, Aldham and Saintclare, ending up at the end of the 1400s with Richard Lewkenor, an East Grinstead MP, County Sheriff, and second husband to Elizabeth Saintclare. His building, surrounded by the moat which still survives 150 yards to the west, was very likely prone to dampness, and this may have been one of the reasons Compton built his house on a new site, and made sure it rose up from an impressive vaulted basement.

They married sometime around 1620, and it was the year before that Compton came into ownership of the older double-moated manor at Brambletye by way of Richard and Edward Sackville, the 3rd and 4th Earls of Dorset respectively. They were brothers of Henry’s first wife, Cecily Sackville, and his own stepSeptember 2010 • East Grinstead Living

and also served as a ranger on Ashdown Forest. One of his children, Henry, was killed in a duel with the 6th Baron Chandos in May 1652 at Putney, and seven years later another son, John, died in residence at Brambletye. The manor had survived the Civil War, and the last act of the Comptons at Brambletye was in 1660, the year of the Restoration, when Henry’s third son, George, held court there. George had married Mary Biddulph in about 1648, and in 1673 the Biddulphs were the new owners of Brambletye Manor, the land staying in their family until as late as 1866. However, the house had fallen into ruin long before then. In 1683 or 84 one Sir James Richards was made a baronet and described as ‘of Brambletye House’. It is commonly believed he abandoned the manor while fleeing to Spain on suspicion of treason, leaving the manor to fall into disrepair. A drawing dated 1782 shows the building in ruins, though with the gatehouse mostly intact and two of the impressive finials still in place atop the towers. By 1830 it was pretty much the ruin we know today, with large portions of the stone having been dismantled for other building projects, including for repairs to the bridge at Edenbridge. The house, or castle as it was sometimes overzealously known, enjoyed a flare of celebrity in the late 1820s when the popular novelist Horace Smith wrote his fictional account of the Comptons, ‘Brambletye House, Or Cavaliers And Roundheads’, which had the double effect of confusing its history and bringing the tourists, some of whom decided a little piece of the castle would make a very nice ornament. By the early 1900s the edifice seemed more tree than stone, but by 1930 the ivy was cleared, the building was stabilised and surveyed, and in 1953 it became a grade II listed structure. It currently resides on private land, and as of 2009 was included on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ register due to general deterioration, though the air of mystery and romance, and perhaps a whiff of Horace Smith’s fictional gunpowder - if the wind is right and the imagination flowing - will still greet the viewer who happens across this wonderful local gem. info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Tree Stump Removal

After

During

Before

Do you have a tree stump that you catch your lawn mower on, or that is harbouring honey fungus or is just plain unsightly?

Call the

specialist! Jonathon Vartan has specialised in tree stump grinding for 27 years. Foretellingly perhaps, he set up his own business just before the storm of 1987 (for those of us old enough to remember…) and was extremely busy by the end of the year clearing stumps to make way for new trees to be planted. He has three machines of varying sizes which allows him to use the most appropriate machine for your tree stump. Access to the tree stump is not a problem, the smallest machine can even go through a house if necessary!

Any tree

stump can be ground, whether it is windblown, out of the ground or close to walls or drains. Stumps can be ground to a depth of 28 inches if required. Jonathon prides himself on managing to get to places to remove stumps where other people have failed, often being called in to re-grind stumps that haven’t been done properly.

Jonathon has worked for hundreds of local residents and has references available on request.

If you’d like to give your front or rear garden a makeover by de-stumping, then for free advice and estimates from an expert, telephone Jonathon Vartan on 07973 289 103 or 01342 824648 September 2010 • East Grinstead Living

yew lodge Warm and welcoming with an air of quiet, rural charm, Yew Lodge is a beautiful Victorian house offering a top-class service for weddings, parties, and social celebrations. Named after the 800 year old tree in the 10 acre gardens and set well back from the road by a long, private drive, Yew Lodge is a family business owned by Peter and Pauline Wells, with their son Nicholas. “We have a passion for quality and service, which together with the wonderful setting, makes Yew Lodge the ideal venue for a special occasion”, says Peter. Knowing that good food, fine wine and attentive serve are vital for the success of any event, Yew Lodge tailors its catering services to suit individual wishes. Pauline explains “We have our own chef and catering team and

meals are freshly prepared on the premises, using local suppliers where possible. For example, our meat is from Fry’s the Butchers, in Lingfield Road. As well as offering our ideas for menus, we are also happy to cook a favourite dish” A great advantage of coming to Yew Lodge is that “exclusive use” can be offered as standard. It is an intimate venue and you and your guests will be the only people in the house and gardens and can truly relax. Indeed, many people have commented favourably on the warm, “house party” atmosphere as opposed to being in a more formal, corporate setting. The house and gardens also offer many and varied wonderful photographic opportunities to capture memories you can treasure forever.

Our web-site www.yewlodge.co.uk has further details and photographs; however, to fully appreciate what Yew Lodge has to offer we invite you to contact us to arrange a visit, without obligation.

Chequer Mead Bares All for

Photography by Steve fisher

The FULL MONTY

by Krystyna O’Brien, Meridian FM DJ Six courageous men, including 107 Meridian FM’s daytime Breakfast Show presenter, Terry Sumner, are baring all in the Chequer Mead’s production of ‘The Full Monty’, which hits the stage on 23rd-25th September. And tickets are selling fast! The show, set in Buffalo, New York, rather than the original Sheffield, is an Americanised musical version of the 1997 hit film, and follows the men as they go from unemployment to performing ‘the full monty”. It includes classic scenes from the original film and addresses issues such as self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun. September 2010 • East Grinstead Living

Other lead roles are played by: Ashley Wolfendale, Dan Woods, Sam Banks, Mike Ricketts and Peter Robinson. Producer, Jo Stephenson of the East Grinstead Operatic Society (EGOS), saw Terry and Ashley last year when they were playing parts in The Company of Friends’ production of Pirates of Penzance at the Hawth in Crawley. She already knew Terry, and so approached him about playing a lead role in ‘The Full Monty’. She also asked him to bring Ashley along to the audition, and the rest is history. Ashley, a mounted police officer, who is also doing the publicity for the show, has known Terry for only a year info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

since Pirates of Penzance, but says that they were destined to meet. Ashley, like Terry, was a Blue Coat at Pontins Holiday Camp, and they’ve walked parallel paths ever since. However, unlike Terry, who fronts East Grinstead rock band, “Euphoria”, Ashley admitted that he cannot sing, but said that Musical Director, Joules Portier (Musical Director at Brighton University), got them all singing regardless of ability, which added to their camaraderie. He said, “The six guys instantly hit it off and we have been like brothers since day one. We have had lots of giggles incorporating the stripping and

East Grinstead LIVING • 15

getting comfortable with one another. The show ends with the famous strip scene, but all the way through the audience is taken on a roller-coaster ride following all the guys from down-and-outs to superstars for one night.” Terry added: “We’re getting to a stage now where we are down to our boxers every time we rehearse. It’s quite a comical show and not one for the kids!” The six men have got on so well in fact that Ashley has asked Terry and ‘Euphoria’ to play for him and his future wife at their wedding next March. To add to the drama, Pru Oliver (who also hosts the daytime Breakfast Show on 107 Meridian FM with Terry) said, that Terry’s role in The Full Monty prompted her and a friend to have a Facebook conversation, during which they discussed how Terry’s hairy back “resembled that of a mammoth” and how it had to go before opening night.

So, unbeknown to Terry, Pru decided to get it waxed off! The idea then came that it would be a great way to earn some money for 107 Meridian FM - East Grinstead and the surrounding areas’ local community radio station, which relies on advertising and sponsorship to fund its substantial monthly running costs. Thus the date was set for Terry to have his back waxed on air during the Breakfast Show on 30th July. Terry’s screams of pain were heard by all Breakfast Show listeners that morning and brought in £500 for the station. The live event was also recorded on video by 107’s Meridian FM’s presenter Steve Hall and photographed by Fraser Visser of Hamilton photography. Before the ordeal, Terry admitted that, out of all the scary things he’d ever done, this was “the scariest of them all. I’ve got sweat beads.” Thankfully, the fun will not stop

info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

once ‘The Full Monty’ ends. There have been rumours of a 2011 Full Monty calendar featuring the six men, with photos taken by Steve Fisher of Visualchaos Studios. Like the show itself, this is certain to be a huge success! Performances: Thurs 23rd to Sat 25th Sept at 7.30pm plus Sat matinee at 2.30pm. Call: 01342 302000 for bookings.

Gardening Tips for SEPTEMBER Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Bulbs

Bulb planting can now begin in earnest particularly Crocus, Chiondoxa, Anemones, Grape Hyacinths and Narcissi and all the various types of Rock Garden bulbs. Tulip planting can be left until next month or even as late as November.

Herbaceous

Early flowering perennials can be cut back and tidied. Penstemons should be pruned back by half. New plantings of herbaceous plants can be carried out this month. If ground is dry continue to water.

Roses

Rambling Roses should be pruned now. Cut away the old flowering growths and tie in the new shoots. Continue spraying all Roses with an organic Fungicide as Black Spot, Rust and Mildew can still be a problem.

Lawns

September is ideal for laying turf. It is essential that once laid the turf is kept well watered. Grass seed can also be sown this month.

GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios. People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex September 2010 • East Grinstead Living

The Swan, Lewes Rd, Forest Row, East Sussex, RH18 5ER Proud Sponsors of this Charity Page

It’s A Cat’s Life at Cats Protection By Krystyna O’Brien The National Cats Protection Centre (NCAC) in Chelwood Gate is much more than just a cats’ home. It is open every day to the public apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, although it is always staffed because of the nature of the work. Those cats that need re-homing the most, are allowed to wander free in reception meeting and greeting the visitors as this gets them re-homed faster. Cats Protection is a charity and receives no government funding. Instead it relies on regular donations, bequeathments and events to bring in much-needed funds. There are several stages a cat must undergo before it can be re-homed: The cat-care assistants do a nose to tail check and alert the vet to any problems. The flea and worming regime is then started, as are the checks for ringworm. The cat is then micro-chipped unless it is a stray. The strays are given their vaccinations and then attempts are made to try to get them back home. If this is not possible, then they are

prepared for re-homing. Tania actively encourages all owners to get their pets micro-chipped. One such cat had been missing for three years. Its owners were both shocked and thrilled when they received the phone call from the NCAC saying that their cat had turned up. About 300 cats are on site at any one time. On average about 120 cats enter the home each month and the same number re-homed, with a cat’s average length of stay in the Centre being 3-4 months. All cats over 4 months old are neutered before leaving the centre. There are around 250 branches of Cats Protection around the country and most of these are volunteer-led. Chelwood Gate which serves the surrouding area is lucky in that it has a full-time staff and many dedicated volunteers, who cuddle the cats and do home visits. Cats Protection is only able to survive because of its volunteers. For more information, make a donation or to become a volunteer, contact NCAC on 01825 741330 or visit their website at www.ncac.cats.org.uk

Family Crest - Seal Rings Seal Rings have been worn by men of distinction for centuries. The signet ring was originally a Seal Ring - the “mark” of a gentleman. The name “Signet” came from the Latin word signator, the person who puts his seal onto a document. The time taken on each ring and the lack of skilled craftsmen means only a few people have the opportunity to own a seal ring. To purchase a seal signet, with a crest attributed to your family name, creates for you and your family an heirloom of great interest and beauty. Many crest rings are sold as Graduation or 21st Birthday presents and to couples for the gentleman’s wedding ring. Available in Gold or Platinum, plain or stone set, most rings are in ladies and gentleman sizes. At George Knight Jewellers in East Grinstead, you can view your heraldic family crest along with a range of signet rings. A man who is not proud of his ancestry will never leave after him anything for which his posterity may be proud of him. Edmund Burke

Is there a ‘Big Society’ in Ashdown Forest?

Featuring prominently in our news at the moment is the new government’s ‘Big Society’ idea. Of course the idea of ‘working’ for free, for the good of others and to better yourself, is as old as society itself. The ‘Big Question’ however is whether, in a society where we already have some of the longest working hours in Western Europe, we want to give up our leisure time to carry out ‘work’ for free, solely for the benefit of others? For those of us that are a little less selfless than those already volunteering where is the return on time invested? And perhaps this is where those of us working in the voluntary sector may have got our messages a little wrong. For the many of us that give our time and energy to a cause we believe in, the main September 2010 • East Grinstead Living

motivation is an altruistic one. But what about selfish gain?

sweat pouring from their brows) they were working very hard.

I hope I might be able to persuade you, that if you haven’t considered joining in with some voluntary ‘work’ or have thought about it often but haven’t actually got involved, there are many opportunities to spend your leisure time having fun, meeting new people, learning new skills and feeling good about yourself? So called ‘volunteering’ can be a lot about what you personally gain from the experience.

But this wasn’t the work most of us think of doing to earn a crust. This work provides the chance to:

I recently went to meet some volunteers who were ‘working’ on a ‘task’ to benefit a local nature reserve. The task was to make some beautiful hand tooled benches from locally sourced chestnut. Of course they had given a substantial amount of their time and (I can assure you of this as I saw the info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

a) Do something very worthwhile to benefit others, but also….. b) Have a go at something new, something different and personally enriching. Learning traditional craft, working with wood and hand tools, making something. How often do you get the opportunity to make a substantial piece of traditional furniture, without having to pay for the tools or materials? c) Most importantly these volunteers were all smiling, laughing and chatting. Some had met before, some had not but they were all having a great time and enjoying each others’ company.

East Grinstead LIVING • 37

Now switch “volunteer task” for “day out” and I’d say this sounds like a pretty good day out! This is just one example of many days being run in our area. Within the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme there are opportunities to get involved in a whole range of countryside practice, traditional woodland crafts, studying local archaeology, working with local theatre groups, helping children learn about bushcraft, working in museums, studying birds and butterflies. Of course there are many more opportunities with other local organisations. Way before David Cameron was talking about ‘Big Society’ the Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership

Scheme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, had launched projects across our local area. Many of these projects specifically aim to support local people in caring for their landscape.

about what is going on in your area please have a look at www.highweald.org, or call the Scheme’s Officer James Sharpe on 01580 879957 or email j.sharpe@highweald.org, we’d love to hear from you.

The Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Scheme began in 2009 and will run until early 2012. The Scheme has around thirty projects running across the Weald Forest Ridge area, the highest ridge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with Ashdown Forest at the centre. The overarching aim of the Scheme is to provide opportunities for local people to become more involved in learning about, understanding and caring for their landscape. If you would like to know more
