Dear Residents

With Valentines Day this month we couldn’t help but celebrate with our front cover and love quotes page. With only 1 month to go before Spring (thank goodness), we have gardening tips to help with your preparations. Our gardening section has grown considerably recently, well worth looking at for an array of services you may require. We have a special treat this month with a feature written by Lord Buckhurst of the Sackville family about the Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park, Withyham, with fascinating historical facts. February sees in the Chinese New Year, so we’ve a feature on the Chinese Zodiac for food for thought. To view an online copy of the East Grinstead Living you can visit our website: www.egliving.co.uk. With by far the majority of our businesses being East Grinstead based hopefully you can find the local service you’re looking for, please mention you saw them in here. Wishing you all the best for February. Tally & Chris The East Grinstead Living Team

• East Grinstead LIVING

With Chinese New Year being celebrated this February we take a look at the Chinese animal zodiac… Those who were born in: Year of the

Dragon

Year Of The

Snake

Year Of The

Horse

1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 They are healthy, energetic, excitable, short-tempered, and stubborn. They are also honest, sensitive, brave, and they inspire confidence and trust. They neither borrow money nor make flowery speeches, but they tend to be soft-hearted which sometimes gives others an advantage over them. 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 They are deep, say little and possess great wisdom. They never have to worry about money. Snake people are often quite vain, selfish, and a bit stingy. Yet they have tremendous sympathy for others and try to help those less fortunate. Although calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002

They are popular, cheerful, skillful with money, and perceptive, although they sometimes talk too much. The are wise, talented & good with their hands. They are impatient and hot-blooded about everything except their daily work. They are very independent and rarely listen to advice.

Year Of The

Ram

1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003

They are elegant and highly accomplished in the arts and seem to be, at first glance, better off than those born in the zodiac’s other years. But ram year people are often shy, pessimistic, and puzzled about life. They are usually deeply religious, yet timid by nature. Ram people never have to worry about having the best in life for their abilities make money for them.

Year Of The

Monkey

1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004

They are erratic geniuses, clever, skillful, flexible, remarkably inventive and original and can solve the most difficult problems with ease. There are few fields in which Monkey people wouldn’t be successful. They want to do things now. Having common sense, Monkey people have a deep desire for knowledge and have excellent memories.

Year Of The

Rooster

1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005

They are deep thinkers, capable, talented, like to be busy and are devoted beyond their capabilities. People born in the Rooster Year are often a bit eccentric, and often have rather difficult relationship with others. They always think they are right and usually are! They frequently are loners and though they give the outward impression of being adventurous, they are timid.

Year of the

Dog

1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006

They possess the best traits of human nature with a deep sense of loyalty, are honest, and inspire other people’s confidence because they know how to keep secrets. But Dog People are somewhat selfish, terribly stubborn, and eccentric. They can find fault with many things and are noted for their sharp tongues. Dog people make good leaders.

Year of the

Pig

1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007

They are chivalrous and gallant. Whatever they do, they do with all their strength. They have tremendous fortitude and great honesty. When making friends they make them for life and are extremely loyal. They don’t talk much but have a great thirst for knowledge. Boar people are quick tempered.

Year Of The

Rat

1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

They are charming and attractive to the opposite sex. They work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists and are basically thrifty with money. Rat people are easily angered and love to gossip. Their ambitions are big, and they are usually very successful. .

Year of the

Ox

1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

They speak little, and inspire confidence in others. They tend, however, to be eccentric, and bigoted, and easily angered. They have fierce tempers and although they speak little, when they do they are quite eloquent. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed.

Year Of The

Tiger

1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

Tiger people are sensitive, given to deep thinking, capable of great sympathy. They can be extremely short-tempered, however. Other people have great respect for them, but sometimes tiger people come into conflict with older people or those in authority. They are suspicious of others, but they are courageous and powerful.

Year Of The

Rabbit

1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 They are articulate, talented, ambitious, virtuous, reserved and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. Fond of gossip yet tactful and generally kind. They are clever at business and being conscientious, never back out of a contract. What’s It All About? Not Long Now..

PANCAKES – don’t you just love ‘em? Crispy, sweet or savoury, thick or thin, the very thought makes your mouth water. Pancakes are eaten allyear round, but one date in the Christian calendar is always associated with this delicacy.

‘Pancake Day,’ or Shrove Tuesday as it is officially known is a tradition that’s been observed for a 1000 years or more. So what’s it all about?

Call Paul on 01342 312009 07971 647 334

Shrove Tuesday derives from the Christian practice of shriving whereby a believer receives absolution for confessing their sins.

TOTAL RUBBISH CLEARANCE

It’s not only a day of penitence, but also a great day of celebration and merry-making. It was partytime – it still is in many parts of the world! Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to feast before Ash Wednesday signalled the first day of Lent. Traditionally, Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is a time to indulge, using up foods that aren’t allowed in Lent. In the past, observers of Lent might refrain from eating a whole range of foods such as meat, fish, fats, eggs, cheese and milk. Families ‘celebrated’ the arrival of Lent with a feast that consumed all supplies that wouldn’t last the forty days of Lent. Pancakes became associated with this as they are a simple dish which uses up all the milk, eggs and fats with just the addition of flour – and could be served in many different ways. Like Easter, Shrove or Pancake Tuesday is a moveable feast. It usually falls in late February, but occasionally is celebrated in March. No Shrove Tuesday would be complete without pancake tossing and racing, the origins of which go back to the 15th century. A housewife in Olney, Buckinghamshire is reputed to have lost track of time whilst preparing pancakes on Shrove Tuesday 1445. Summoned by the bell’s tolling, she raced to church, clutching her frying pan and wearing her apron. The village is now world famous for its annual pancake races. There are many traditions and superstitions attached to Shrove Tuesday. It’s significance has changed with time but religious festival or not, one constant remains – it’s a great excuse to pick up the frying pan and serve up a feast. Get out the eggs and have a cracking time! February 2011 • East Grinstead Living

Gardening Tips for FEBRUARY Article by Michael Dongray, Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Fruit A general-purpose fertilizer such as Fish blood and bone can be applied to fruit trees. Use a high potash fertilizer for soft fruit such as blackcurrants and gooseberries. Apply the fertilizer over the whole root area roughly the same as the branch canopy. Always read the instructions and keep to the recommended rates. Autumn fruiting varieties of Raspberries should have all their canes pruned down to ground level. This is best carried out around the middle of February and then apply a mulch of well rotted compost.

Vegetables

Bulbs

Now is a good time to move overcrowded snowdrops. Lift and divide and replant whilst the foliage is still green.

Aim to complete all your digging this month. Purchase Seed Potatoes, Onion Sets and Vegetable seed.

Roses

Bare rooted roses need planting as soon as ground conditions are suitable. Avoid planting when soil is frozen. Prepare beds for new roses by working in a good helping of well-rotted compost or manure. Also apply a dressing of fertiliser to the soil as roses are regarded as ‘heavy feeders’.

Lawns

Do not walk on lawns when frozen as this can lead to damage. Keep grass free from leaves. As the weather becomes milder worm casts may become a problem. Spread the worm casts with a rake. Towards the end of the month, it may be necessary to cut the grass. Raise the cutting height on the mower to the maximum and give the grass a light trim.

Greenhouse

Wash down the glass. Removing all the dirt and grime that has accumulated. This will increase the amount of light reaching seedlings and other young plants growing in the greenhouse. This will also help to destroy any over wintering plant pests. If you can provide protection from frost, start Dahlia tubers or Gladioli corms into growth in seed trays or boxes and place in a light, airy location.

“The Weald Forest Ridge, historically part of the Weald, has a scenic quality of its own. The high country, much of it between 400 and 600 feet above sea level, runs almost unbroken from the county boundary near Tunbridge Wells to Horsham, and includes the breezy, treeless heights of Ashdown Forest. It is famous for its far-ranging views South to the Downs and for its magnificent gardens like Wakehurst, and Nymans, in which the sandy soil is especially favourable to rhododendrons.” Weald Forest Ridge Landscape Partnership Area Neighbouring Urban Towns

Crouch, M, (1969) The Heritage of Sussex, Macdonald Just thirty miles south of London, it is possible to step back 600 years to a medieval landscape of rolling hills, abundant woodland and ancient routeways. The High Weald is recognised by its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and as East Grinstead is designated as the Capital of the High Weald you might like to know more: For millennia the concept of the Weald has meant different things to people at different times and has been variously imagined and rendered. By name, the ‘Weald’ is related to German ‘Wald’ meaning ‘forest’ and was most likely used by Saxon’s and Jutes to describe the immense wooded area that then occupied most of Sussex and bordering counties. To early peoples, the area was a wild and barren place – as 8th Century scholar agreed the region was, ‘thick and inaccessible, the abode of deer, swine and wolves.’ February 2011 • East Grinstead Living

Generations of pioneer farmers with axe and plough slowly made their mark on this complex countryside; with unrelenting hard-work and an independence of spirit these early Wealden characters found opportunity in the landscape. Onto modern times and it is arguably little changed; found still are the patchworks of small-scattered farmsteads and thick coppiced woodlands, lined with their steep banks of darkened stream beds and scattered with grand outcrops of sandstone. This story of local landscape is also a story of unrelenting labour of generations and people’s unyielding interaction with trees; cared for to provide timber for shipbuilding, charcoal for the home and more importantly fuel for the furnace. Within the High Weald is the Weald Forest Ridge. Today, the Weald Forest Ridge Partnership Scheme has around 30 projects running across the area, with info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

opportunities to get involved in a whole range of countryside practice, many of these specifically aim to support local people in caring for their landscape. The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) has been helping groups of local people to set up conservation groups in the Weald Forest Ridge area, part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With local people now regularly working in and around Horsted Keynes, Forest Row, Hargate Forest in Tunbridge Wells, as well as nature reserves across the area; BTCV are calling for a few more local people to express their interest in setting up their own conservation group. If you would like to know more please call the BTCV Weald Forest Community Officer Warren Young on 07740 899 678 or, e-mail w.young@btcv.org.uk

The Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park

W

e are honoured to be able to publish this article written by Lord Buckhurst, the Sackville family heir. It covers the history of the Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park (Withyham) their family estate interspersed with fascinating snippets of family history. The Sackville Family’s ancestors, of course, once owned most of the lands in the area and no place is this presence more evident than East Grinstead for which many namesakes have been given – Sackville College, Lane, School etc; Buckhurst Way; The Dorset Arms (after Dukes of Dorset), Cantelupe Rd; De La Warr Rd., etc.

The Rackets Court at Buckhurst Park enjoys the distinction of being the last remaining privately owned Rackets Court in England. It remains interesting for its richly coloured red floor - thought to have been stained with bull’s blood! It is one of very few mid 19th century courts to have survived, and possibly one of the earliest enclosed courts in the country. It has been privately owned by the same family for over 150 years. Built in 1857 by doting parents to commemorate the safe return of their eldest surviving son and heir from the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-1855, Crimean War), it reveals a fascinating history and insight into the Sackville family and the 19th century game of rackets. The Court was built for MajorGeneral Charles Richard Sackville-West, who later became the 6th Earl De La Warr. Charles had been educated at Harrow School in February 2011 • East Grinstead Living

the 1820s, during the time that Harrow became the first public school to take up the game of rackets, and so had presumably developed a passion for the game there. Up until Charles’s arrival at Harrow there had been no particular tradition of rackets sports in the Sackville family. Indeed, if they can claim a contribution to the ranks of British sporting history then it is through his predecessors, the 2nd and 3rd Dukes of Dorset, who were notable for their patronage of early English cricket: Charles Sackville, 2nd Duke of Dorset, and his younger brother, Lord John Sackville, were at the first cricket match played at the famous Vine Cricket Ground in Sevenoaks, where for the first time cricket was played with three stumps rather than two. John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, was a founder member of the Marleybone Cricket Club (MCC) and when, during his ambassadorship in France, he invited a team of English cricketers to lead a tour in 1789, they were met at Dover by the info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

Duke himself coming the other way - he was fleeing for his life from the French Revolution. So the intended first-ever overseas cricket tour became instead the first tour to be cancelled for political reasons! The 3rd Duke’s only son died childless aged 21 in a hunting accident in Ireland in 1815. The Dukedom of Dorset passed to a distant cousin and subsequently died out, but the extensive Sackville lands and estates passed to the 3rd Duke’s last surviving daughter, Lady Elizabeth Sackville, who by then was married to the 5th Earl De La Warr, whose ancestor had given his name to the US State of Delaware. A run of bad luck followed in the family as Lord and Lady De La Warr’s eldest son and heir, George John Frederick, Viscount Cantelupe, also died young and childless in 1850. When, therefore, their second son and new heir, Charles, left to fight in the Crimea, the relief that his parents felt at his safe return resulted in the commission of an

impressive new Rackets Court in a perfect location, metres from the main house and the formal gardens. A brass plate in the gallery commemorates the return from Sevastopol of Colonel Lord West; interestingly Charles didn’t take his late brother’s title of Viscount Cantelupe (presumably thinking it to be unlucky) but instead styled himself as Lord West, referring back to an ancient De La Warr barony which had long since ceased to exist. Luck was not to follow him, however, as the rackets player, Charles, who never married, ended up drowning himself in the River Cam in 1863. Unusually then, it was Lord and Lady De La Warr’s third son, Reginald, who succeeded as 7th Earl in 1863. There is little record of Reginald - who until his succession to the Earldom had been a vicar - ever having played rackets in the Court. There are, however, well preserved records of the Court being put to other uses. Firstly in December 1863, when the new 7th Earl and his Countess arrived at Buckhurst, the Tunbridge Wells Courier describe lavish celebrations held in the Court with “300 sat down to a bountiful repast of roast beef and plum pudding” and a few days later, “a Christmas Tree, lit up and of gigantic proportions with 577 children of February 2011 • East Grinstead Living

estate staff and tenants filing past”. Later, in 1889, at the coming of age party of Lord and Lady De La Warr’s eldest son, Lionel Charles Cranfield - who this time did style himself Viscount Cantelupe - a week of celebrations was held at Buckhurst with the Rackets Court used again to stage a presentation ceremony from the estate tenants to Lord Cantelupe and then, later in the week, for all the birthday presents to be laid out on tables for visitors to file past and view. With a young family living at Buckhurst once again, it is likely that the Court was played on frequently; it is unfortunate that, although there is still a copy of the visitors book in the Court at Buckhurst, players stopped entering their names in the 1870s. We do know, however, from Lord Aberdare’s book on the game that at around the turn of the century Joseph Bickley - a well-known builder of Tennis, Rackets and Fives Courts - re-faced the walls, and they remain in good condition today. The run of bad luck continued in the family. Shortly after his coming of age celebrations and subsequent marriage, the young Viscount Cantelupe drowned in his yacht during a storm off Belfast. His younger brother, Gilbert, eventually became the 8th Earl but died at sea in 1915 on his way back from fighting at Gallipoli. The Cantelupe title has not been used by an eldest son since. Following the untimely death of the 8th Earl, Buckhurst was leased to a rich banking family called the Bensons (the family bank later became Kleinwort Benson). Although they made considerable improvements to the main house and gardens, there is little record of what happened to the Rackets Court during their tenure in the first half of the 20th century. info@egliving.co.uk • tel: 01342 300152

During the Second World War Buckhurst was requisitioned by the Canadian Army who used the Court to store tanks; in order to get them in and out they carved a large hole in one of the side walls, which was subsequently repaired. The last time that the court was played on was during my grandparents’ time in the 1960s when Clarence “Clarry” Pell (a close friend of my grandparents) played against Cosmo Crawley. My own more recent memory of its use was restricted to games of indoor ‘stump’ with my younger brother! Since then, the Court has fallen into a state of disuse with much of the original wooden staircase and viewing gallery rotted and no glass left in the roof. The court lights are no longer in place. However, the exterior walls are still in very good condition and the inside walls and floor, rather remarkably, remain in a very ‘playable’ state. We are currently exploring ways of raising sufficient funds to restore the Court to its former glory in the hope that we could once again see rackets played at Buckhurst. Lord Buckhurst

Choirs seem suddenly to be all the rage. Over the last three or four years, more choirs are springing up in towns across the length and breadth of the country and East Grinstead is no exception. The television programmes of Gareth Malone have clearly shown that anybody can sing, and the success of the BBC choir competition, Last Choir Standing has given everybody an insight into the incredible sound a choir can make. But the real benefit of a choir comes from being part of it. A quick search on the internet reveals that there are several opportunities to join a choir in East Grinstead alone: inChoir, a choir in which I must admit to having a personal involvement, has been running for two years and sings rock, pop and soul songs. ChoirPower has been established for a number of years, singing jazz, show tunes, old standards and the like. East Grinstead Choral Society was formed in 1952 and sings a more traditional range of classical choral music. February 2011 • East Grinstead Living

And the latest addition, a new children’s choir, “One Voice” for kids in the local area. All four are looking for new members. And there are no doubt more choirs in the area besides. And of course, singing is good for you. Yes it really is. Physically, it increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when you’re sitting down. Psychologically when people sing together, benefits are evident because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour. At inChoir we hear comments all the time like “I was so depressed until I started singing with the choir”, and “I haven’t needed my asthma inhaler since I started singing”. It has to be better for you than sitting at home watching the telly! There is a big social benefit too. You can come out and meet new people or bump into old friends. a choir as it’s always good to do something fun with the family.

Mark Heppell

Being part of a choir gives you a chance to perform in public, even if you have never done it before. Over the last year, inChoir has performed in Chequer Mead Theatre, East Grinstead; The Capitol in Horsham; Wakehurst Place; and The Jubilee Community Centre as well as various local fetes and fayres. All profits from these performances are donated to charity, and to date we’ve raised nearly £3,000. Just imagine the feeling, having never been on stage before, of getting a standing ovation from a packed audience. & being able to help charity at the same time. Now that has to be good for you! It’s not too late to make a new resolution for 2011 and join a choir… Mark Heppell mark@inchoir.co.uk www.inchoir.co.uk

Have you Overplucked your Eyebrows? Can’t apply great make up? Lips lost their definition and thinning? Hate to be seen without your make-up on? Pretty permanent make-up addresses these problems giving you a beautifully groomed and defined look that can also take years off your appearance and solve your make-up problems. Plus It lasts from morning to

night, day after day, month after month! Mary Anne

This is a proven safe and easy way you can look better fast, without surgery. You can have more confidence and more time!

Q: What’s the difference between a traditional tattoo and Semi -permanent? A-MaryAnne: A traditional tattoo is done to last, so inks are implanted deeply in lower layers of the dermis. Semi permanent Art be it make up or body, is worked only into the very upper layers of the dermis and with specially formulated pigments; it is a graze of colour and needs to be boosted annually or it will fade away.

Which woman doesn’t want to look her best all the time? Here are some of our customer testimonials: “Just wanted to say how delighted I am with my eyebrows! They have settled down nicely into the perfect colour and shape. We went to Lanzarote for a week and it was a god send to look made up by the pool with just my brows on! I feel like I have had a face lift at a fraction of the price and just look so much smarter and finished! I am a very happy customer and wish I had done it years ago!” Caroline F

Before

“I’m just dropping you a quick line to let you know all is well and I’m loving my new brows! You were of course completely right, my brows did need doing and the shape is amazing. The freedom of not having to wear make-up and still looking ok is fantastic.” Heather K

After

“For years I struggled with drawing in my eyebrows and the time it took that I simply had to do something about it. I am so impressed with my eyebrows now that applying my make-up takes half the time and I look great! Thank you MaryAnne.” Mimi P
