Guttering Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Gardening Tips for April Article by Michael Dongray,
Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor
Lawns
April is the best month to apply weed killer or moss killer. Apply a spring fertilizer to help green up your lawn after the winter. Mow the grass as necessary but do not compost the clippings if you have applied lawn weedkiller. If you used moss killer after a couple of weeks rake out the dead moss and any other debris on the lawn.
Shrubs and Flowers Mulch around camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas to help conserve moisture to ensure good flowering next year. Tie in new shoots of clematis, jasmine and climbing and rambling roses Sow sweet pea seeds outside or plant out those you have grown over winter. Put the climbing structure, either a wigwam of frame with netting, in place. Put two seeds or plants to each cane. If you have a light soil you can start making sowings of hardy annuals. Sow into straight seed drills as this makes it easier to take out any weeds that will grow. Once the flowers are in bloom you will not be able to see the rows. Put in supports for perennials to grow through before they become too large. Use frames sold for this purpose and once the plants mature they will be hidden by the foliage. The more tender plants that had their stems left on to protect the crowns such as fuchsias and penstemons can now be pruned taking care not

to cut out any new growth. Keep dead heading daffodils and tulips taking off only the flower and seed head.
Roses Finish pruning your roses and start spraying them with fungicide to ward against black spot, rust and mildew. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn.
Fruit
Plant strawberry plants in planters or hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop this summer. Protect fruit trees and gooseberries with netting. Check your rhubarb; harvest it if it has grown. The blossom of peach, nectarine and apricot trees should be protected from frost with a cover of fleece. Remove it in the daytime to allow insects to pollinate. Plum and cherry trees can be pruned now the threat of getting silver leaf disease has gone.
Greenhouse If you have a frost-free greenhouse, get ahead with the summer crops – sweet peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and salads can be planted inside. If it remains cold, check the temperature requirements on the seed packet and wait if necessary. On warm days open the vents and doors of your greenhouse and damp down the floor.

“If when you say whiskey you mean the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.

EG Resident faces 100km walk from London to Brighton in 24 hours challenge Chris Parfitt, 49, was looking for the challenge of a lifetime to mark his 50th birthday in May this year when he came across the Walk100 challenge (walk100. org.uk) organised by Blind Veterans UK to raise money for blind & visually impaired exservicemen/women.
Dodgers – Pride Runs Deep’ team.
“My wife, Karen & I, have always enjoyed walking and are often out and about in the beautiful Sussex countryside with our dog Ollie”, says Chris. “But I have never contemplated doing this sort of distance before let alone a 100km walk in 24 hours!”
“When I was considering this I thought it would be better to be part of a team for mutual support & encouragement for when the going gets tough. Life on post-war diesel submarines was cramped & hard at times; what bonded us together was our unique sense of humour, professionalism, the feeling of comradeship & team spirit. I knew that if I was going to complete this walk in 24 hours, a team of ex-diesel submariners would be the best bet.
Chris, an ex-service man himself who served in the Royal Naval Submarine Service, is teaming up with 2 other ex-submariners to form the ‘Ex-Diesel Sun
“I have always had the greatest respect for how blind people cope & to find yourself going blind or having greatly reduced vision is a real challenge in itself”. You can sponsor Chris by visiting his online fundraising page on www.justgiving.com/chrisparfitt. You can also donate £1 / £2 / £5 or £10 by texting DEEP50 £1 / £2 / £5 or £10 to 70070 eg; DEEP50 £5. 1. Speed up ironing. When ironing clothing much of the iron’s heat is sucked up by the board itself - so you have to make several passes to remove creases. To speed it up put aluminium foil under the ironing board cover. 2. Scatter a border of ashes around the garden to deter worms, slugs, etc. 3. Soften up tough meet. Beer is a great tenderiser for tough, inexpensive cuts of stewing meat. Pour a can over the meat and let it soak for an hour before cooking - better still marinade it overnight in the fridge. 4. Alleviate athlete’s foot. Use Bicarbonate of Soda, dust your feet (along with shoes & socks) with the powder. Also try making a paste of 1tspn bicarb soda with 1/2 tspn water and rubbing in between toes. Let it dry and wash off after 15 mins.

Imberhorne’s new Sports Hall Forging Ahead
A number of sponsored events have been planned to raise the £200,000 the school needs to contribute to the project themselves. • On the 1st June students will be taking part in a team marathon which is being calling ‘Imberthon’ - a sponsored Diamond Jubilee celebration. • Later on in the year a group of staff are planning to climb the “three peaks” . • In July a team of PE teachers are going to run along the south coast from pier to pier. Please sponsor these events as you can. Walk of fame bricks: Later on this year there will be an opportunity to buy a brick which will be individually engraved with a name or names. They will be used to create a “walk of fame” brick path leading to the entrance. More news to come…
Chris Michaels I started DJing in and around East Grinstead in 1995 with a passion for dance music and mixing. I moved away from the area in 2004 for a year and retired from club DJing. In 2009, I had a chance meeting with an old friend and current Meridian DJ Neil Symon, who asked me if I’d like to be a guest on his Friday night show. I jumped at the chance and have been a part of the show ever since, which I’m now co-host to, called funky weekend. I now have two of my own shows. One is on a Thursday night, which takes a look at different kinds of music from the 1980s. On a Sunday, I take you back in time with my lazy Sundae show, which takes a look at the 60’s and 70’s. I pay particular attention to one year from either decade and play the hits and recall the headlines from that year. I love the way music can take you back to a certain time and place in an instant and hopefully bring back happy memories and good times. The Thursday Night Throwback Show, Thursday nights 10-12pm Funky Weekend with Neil Symon, 8-10pm Lazy Sundae Sundays, Sundays 12-2pm

100 Miles for 100 Years:
The Big Swim
2012 marks the centenary of East Grinstead Swimming Club’s existence. This is a significant landmark that very few clubs or organisations reach. To celebrate this milestone, on the 25th of May EG Swimming Club members will swim ‘non-stop’ for 100 miles in East Grinstead High Street! How? Good question… Thanks to Hydropool of Felbridge an ‘Aqua-trainer’ – a swimming treadmill - is being donated for the event. South East Water is filling up the Aqua-trainer and taking away the water afterwards. Swimmers are not expected to swim continuously; news we welcome with a sigh of relief - it was exhausting just imagining it… The aqua-trainer has seats in it so, when each swimmer has given a burst of energy, the
very next swimmer will take over. This is then repeated to give long periods of rest between swims. 100 miles is a huge effort… It is expected that the swim will take 50 hours! The youngest might give short bursts of 50 metre sprints whilst older swimmers might challenge themselves to swim 1 mile continuously. To achieve the goal, they will need to maintain an average of 2 miles per hour. As this is a continuous swim challenge older members & adults will be swimming through two nights. This televised event is expected to gain publicity both locally and nationally. The club has received lots of support so far from local companies. For instance Hydropool are donating the

EG Hockey Club’s Local Lad, Luke Taylor
As part of our series of profiling East Grinstead Hockey Players we’re featuring up-and-coming young talent, Luke Taylor, who was born and bred in the local area. At the tender age of 17 his honed skill on the hockey field is plainly evident by his already long list of accomplishments.
How did you get into Hockey? What sparked your initial interest? As a youngster I had some plastic sticks and a ball that I used to hit around down the side of our house. Aged 8 I saw an ad on the door of the classroom at school encouraging youngers to start training at East Grinstead Hockey Club, I went along and have never looked back.
U21 for England, representing U21’s still aged 16. I went to the U18 Europeans last summer. I have also been lucky enough to win two Golds at the Sainsbury’s UK school games, the second as captain. I have been playing for EG men’s 1’s for two seasons now. Last year even though we won the league by 11 points, we lost in the championship finals. This year I hope that we go one better and win. I have also played in the Euro Hockey League with EG. For the last 3 years I have won the National schools indoor finals with Whitgift School.
Although you won’t be participating due to age, what are your hopes of the British What are your hopes & aspirations Hockey Team this summer? for your Hockey career? My hopes are that both Men and I would like to make it into the GB/England senior squads and represent GB at a future Olympics, winning a medal would of course be the icing on the cake but that is a long way off. There are the youth Olympics and world cup in 2013 and that is what I am working towards at present.
What honours & awards have you achieved so far? I have been selected for U16/U18/
Women win a medal - preferably gold (of course…) at the games this summer. Being in a squad with 7 of the GB boys is a great honour and I hope to be as good as them one day.
Who or What is your inspiration when competing? My parents have had to sacrifice a lot driving me around the country to train and compete so I guess they come pretty high up my list.
Profile questions: Year of Birth & Birthplace? Haywards Heath, 1994 Local Schools attended? Ashurst Wood primary and then Sackville school until 2009. I received a sporting scholorship to Whitgift school which I currently attend. Highlight of last year? Being selected to represent England U18’s in the European Championships Best thing that could happen this year? The best thing that could happen would be to reach the European Hockey League Finals with EG and to move up into the England U21 squad.

WITH COMPLIMENT www.kitchensbespoke.co.u
Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. The word ‘bespoke’ refers to the design process itself and Rachael says that her kitchens are more affordable than you may think. An expensive look doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Rachael can design a kitchen that fits you. With your needs and her expertise the kitchen you have only imagined can become reality. BRITISH NEWSPAPERS
Easter
1) Commenting on a complaint from a Mr. Arthur Purdey about a large gas bill, a spokesman for North West Gas said, “We agree it was rather high for the time of year. It’s possible Mr. Purdey has been charged for the gas used up during the explosion that destroyed his house.”
Easter is a chief Christian feast, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion. The word itself is sometimes thought to have been derived from Eostre, a very obscure Germanic goddess of Spring of the Anglo-Saxon Pagans. Grimm in his Teutonic Mythology said that “Ostara, Eástre, was goddess of the growing light of Spring.”
(The Daily Telegraph)
2) Irish police are being handicapped in a search for a stolen van because they cannot issue a description. It’s a Special Branch vehicle and they don’t want the public to know what it looks like. (The Guardian)
3) A young girl who was blown out to sea on a set of inflatable teeth was rescued by a man on an inflatable lobster. A coast guard spokesman commented, “This sort of thing is all too common”. (The Times)
4) At the height of the gale, the harbourmaster radioed a coastguard and asked him to estimate the wind speed. He replied he was sorry, but he didn’t have a gauge. However, if it was any help, the wind had just blown his Land Rover off the cliff. (Aberdeen Evening Express)
5) Mrs. Irene Graham of Thorpe Avenue, Boscombe, delighted the audience with her reminiscence of the German prisoner of war who was sent each week to do her garden. He was repatriated at the end of 1945, she recalled. “He’d always seemed a nice friendly chap, but when the crocuses came up in the middle of our lawn in February 1946, they spelt out ‘Heil Hitler.’” (Bournemouth Evening Echo) 30 | April 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts
Easter has various religious and popular customs. Church services are one of the high points of the Christian calendar, which, since the 2nd century, has also been a time for baptism. Eggs, hares & rabbits are symbols from antiquity of the rising fertility of the earth, symbolising new life. Birds lay eggs in Spring and hares & rabbits are both prolific breeders! In addition eggs were forbidden to Christians during the fast of Lent (which ends just before Easter) which was the reason for their abundance at Easter time. The painting of eggs and tales of a rabbit who decorates and hides them are among the early folk customs associated with the holiday.
East Grinstead Art Society We meet at St. Swithun’s Church Hall twice a month on Wednesdays from 2.00 until 4.30 pm approx. One session is a demonstration and the other a workshop. Fees are very reasonable at £25. p.a. and visitors are welcome at any meeting for a nominal sum of £3. We cover watercolours, oils, pastels, sketching, acrylics and much more. “Aspidistra” Deep underground at King’s Standing on the Ashdown Forest is a bunker which housed the largest radio transmitter in the world, ASPI 1, codenamed ‘Aspidistra’. It was used to transmit announcements & black propaganda to Germany during the Second World War. In 1940 the British Government’s answer to the German broadcasts by the traitor, William Joyce, known as Lord Haw-Haw was the setting up of a network of short wave transmitters based at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire. These were under the control of the Political Warfare Executive (PWE) and mainly transmitted ‘white propaganda’. When Denis Sefton Delmer was recruited by the PWE in November 1940 black propaganda was created. Sefton Delmer was born in 1904 in Berlin but was registered as a British citizen with the British Consulate. His father was Professor of English Literature in Berlin University. The English Language: Is there method to the Madness? Some words have become antiquated and slipped out of general use but have yet been preserved in phrases or expressions, for instance: Neck in ‘neck of the woods’ was once generally used to describe a piece of land but that meaning has all but died out. Tell once meant to count as in ‘bank teller’ Raring in ‘raring to go’ means: full of eagerness, enthusiastic. Kilter in ‘out of kilter’ means: good condition, proper form. Bay in ‘at bay’ means: a deep howl or growl, esp of a hound on the scent. ‘Fro’ in ‘to and fro’ means: away, back. The phrase, ‘spick and span’, was formerly ‘spick and span new’. Spick is a spike or nail and ‘span new’ means, ‘entirely new’. Call Nanci on 0774 0981855 - 01342 325913 To discuss how we can Help with All Your Cleaning & Other Domestic Chores

Aspidistra continued
site was illuminated at night and the lighting was immediately switched off when a message was received that enemy aircraft were approaching the coast. The soil-covered bunker which housed it was a concrete box completely underground with a reinforced concrete slab 4 feet thick on top. Aspidistra (ASPI 1 transmitter) and all of the equipment required for broadcasting were installed, and in another bunker ASPI 2 was located as a back-up. Later more transmitters were added: in the building known as ‘The Cinema’ built during 1942/1943, ASPI 3 and later ASPI 6 were installed. In 1943/1944 a short wave transmitter, ASPI 5, was installed. This transmitter was initially used for jamming Luftwaffe ground-to-air communications.
deceive the Germans into thinking that his broadcasts came from within Germany. His creations would join a number of other research units operating propaganda broadcasts. The new station ‘Gustav Siegfried Eins’ went on the air on the evening of 23rd May 1941. It would be a further 2 years until his black propaganda programmes were broadcast from Aspidistra. Also in May of 1941, the Government had sent Harold Robin to the USA to purchase a medium wave 500kW transmitter. Robin spent the summer of 1941 learning it’s use. It was later codenamed Aspidistra and Robin was to become the Chief Engineer of the radio station. A search took place to find a suitable site for Aspidistra and eventually 70 acres on the Ashdown Forest in the parish of Maresfield at King’s Standing was found and requisitioned. Work commenced in the winter of 1941/1942 to excavate a 50 feet deep hole to house the transmitter. A team of Canadian engineers, stationed nearby completed the task in six weeks. The rest of the building work was carried out by a team of 600 men working round the clock. The
The first official broadcast of Aspidistra, made in November 1942 to the French by President Roosevelt, proved a great success. The occasion was the landing of the Americans in North Africa. It was because of disagreements between the PWE and the BBC, that Aspidistra was not actually used for black propaganda until February 1943. In May 1943 to augment this black propaganda campaign, a studio was built in the grounds of Woburn Abbey and recordings were then relayed to Aspidistra for broadcast. Another use for Aspidistra, on the orders of Winston Churchill, was to try to mislead the night fighters. Bomber Command were losing many bombers to German fighter aircraft and so the fighters were sent to the locations of the previous nights raids - as many as twenty to thirty bombers were saved every night. This operation was codenamed ‘Operation Dartboard’. The radio station remained intact and was never bombed although on one occasion incendiary bombs were dropped close by and in July 1944 one V1 Flying Bomb passed very low between the masts. On 20th August 1945 the black propaganda stations were closed down but the transmitters
