Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Dear Residents, Welcome to the next issue.

Spring is upon us! Or at least it was when this went to print, so fingers crossed it stays that way! If you like gardening you’ll love our April article from Imberhorne Lane Nursery. Hever Castle which is about 10 miles from East Grinstead was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn which most of us know, however we have an article about the man who, in effect, brought it back to life in the late 19th century, see page 18. Ever thought of foraging? This is becoming everpopular and since we have Ashdown Forest on our doorstep there are many opportunies for it, for an introduction see page 8. Ladies, what are the perfect jeans for you? see 14 for helpful advice. Hopefully you can find all the services for your home and garden here. Please support local businesses when you can. Wishing you all a very Happy Easter. Tally & Chris

Foraging, a new Spring hobby? Spring is upon us and the hedgerows and gardens are starting to burst forth with new shoots. An exciting time in any foragers diary! I am often asked which plant I would most recommend as an introduction to foraging. The answer is always nettles and Spring is the perfect time to pick this plant. There is probably no other plant that excites me in the way the humble nettle does. Now, at the start of Spring, these new shoots are at their best. It is with a big smile and a real sense of gratitude that I harvest the tips of the shoots. And once my foraging bag is full, I cannot help taking in the sweet aroma. There is a real sweetness to them that is only revealed once the plant has been picked. The first thing I do when I get back home is pop the kettle on and throw a couple of nettle tops into a mug. Nettle tea has a Foraging, a new Spring hobby? crisp, earthy freshness to it.

to identify, but they are incredibly nutritious and medicinal too. As an acupuncturist and herbalist I would recommend nettles when the signs & symptoms are pointing in the direction of, thin hair, weak nails and dry skin. I am sure there are many ladies that recognise these. Nettles are a potent source of minerals, amino acids and protein. They are high in calcium, vitamin C and a great source of iron. It’s like spinach or broccoli on steroids. If ever there was a super veg this would be it and it’s growing right on our doorsteps. No air miles involved in bringing this to you plate. to simmer until the potatoes are cooked through. Then I add the nettles and simmer for a further 3-5 mins. I take the pot off the heat source and blend the whole lot and season with salt and pepper.

So the best way to access this would be to make a simple tea infusion or even better to make a wonderful, tasty soup:

Whilst I am preparing the soup I fry some smoked streaky back bacon until crispy. I serve the soup with the bacon and garnish with Hairy bitter-cress (Cardimine hirsute).

Keeping the kids busy this Easter. Try the traditional decorative Easter eggs 1. Gently swirl the point of a scalpel into the end of the egg until it pierces. If you don’t have a scalpel then use a needle to make a hole.

Repeat at other end but continue to widen the hole at the other end by swirling the scalpel (or needle) around so it chips away at the sides. Insert the skewer or needle, jiggle it around a little to break up the yolk - this will make it easier to blow the egg out. Gently blow out the egg. Afterwards put in a drop of water into the shell. Gently shake it around a little and blow it out. Leave to dry and then you’re ready to decorate. 2. You can use the following to decorate the eggs: stickers, spraypaint, metallic felt pens, etc. Food colouring can be used as an effective background colour. You can also gently wrap elastic band around the egg and then spraypaint or paint. Take the bands off when dry for a fabulous effect. Silvery Fish-scales are a great pattern. There is a world of possibilities!

BACK AND NECK PAIN

Written by Marie-Agnès Casalini - Certified AtlasPROfilax® Practitioner What is the Atlas? The Atlas is the first cervical vertebrae in the neck, also called C1. How does a misaligned Atlas (or C1 – First cervical vertebrae in the neck) affect the body? The Atlas carries not only the skull, but also facilitates suspension, balance and control of the human spine and skeletal system. A twisted Atlas can cause significant adverse changes to the posture. The spine can be compared to a chain. When the first link is twisted each link down to the last turns thereby disrupting the rest of the chain. The whole back bone tries to compensate for such imbalance causing significant adverse changes to the posture. The results are symptoms such as headaches/migraines, neck pain, stiff neck, whiplash, back pain, lumbago, herniated disc(s), scoliosis, jammed spinal nerves, twisted pelvis, hip joint pain, knee pain, difference

in leg length, dizziness, TMJ, and a variety of other symptoms. The neck is the passage for the nerves, veins, arteries, cerebrospinal fluid and the spinal canal through which is transmitted all information between the brain and the various organs. Dislocation of the Atlas may thus, put the spinal cord, cranial nerves and other nerve tracts under constant pressure as well as reducing the opening of spinal canal (foramen magnum). Who is affected by a misaligned Atlas? People who have been involved in a car crash accident (whiplash), had a difficult birth, fallen off a horse/ bicycle/ ladder, rugby players, footballers… and many of those who can’t even recall any previous physical impact or injuries. How is this different from chiropractic work? The Atlas correction is a unique, effective, non-medicinal method and requires no cracking neck or manipulations. It is not an adjustment but a powerful relocation of the Atlas. We massage the tight muscles around the base of the skull where the Atlas is trapped and release it. The atlas moves into full location in one session, permanently. See advert opposite. For happy clients and chiropractor’s feedback see:

Picking Up the Pieces Local children’s charity Jigsaw (South East) has just launched a new £100,000 fundraising campaign, ‘Pick up the Pieces’, to fund its invaluable work supporting bereaved children and children who are facing the loss of a loved one through serious illness.

The idea was conceived by one of the charity’s dedicated volunteers, Tony Allen. A week ago, a symbolic 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle was unveiled with an appeal to local businesses, sponsors, individuals – anyone – to purchase a piece of the puzzle for £100. This will help Jigsaw to ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ and continue its work supporting children and young people across Surrey and Sussex. All participants will receive their piece of the puzzle along with a certificate and a logo on the website. Janey Treharne of Jigsaw South East said: “Our service provides support to children who have lost a close family member through illness, accident, suicide or murder as well as those who have a family member with a life-limiting illness. Where is the seat of the Dutch government?

Here are a few golden rules which may help the more reticent of you to embrace your inner ‘rock-chick’. 1. For the more curvy figure, choose a high rise style, ie long zip with a waistband which sits at your slimmest point. 2. For a straighter figure, choose a style which finishes just below the point where your waist should be. This will give the illusion of curves (and don’t worry a well cut jean will still tuck in any extra pounds you may want to hide). 3. Top heavy? Consider a bootcut, which will flare slightly at the ankle and balance your upper proportions. 4. Choose dark denim – much less challenging than lighter washes 5. If your rear view is larger than you would like, avoid pocket details and bling. Wear tops which finish at your hip level – or wear a long line jacket or cardigan, with detail at the shoulders or neck.

6:

What is the national sport of the USA?

6. Don’t wear belts unless you are proud of your tummy area. Salvation is here in the shape of pull on jeans, with wide elastic waistbands! Say hello to flat tummies without the ugliness of a front zip!

Hever Castle & William Waldorf Astor

home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I.

A few miles from East Grinstead, situated in the heart of idyllic countryside, this romantic castle is famous for being the childhood

The original medieval castle with its gatehouse and walled bailey was built in 1270, with the Tudor dwelling added within its walls by the powerful Bullen (Boleyn) family who lived at Hever during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its splendid panelled rooms contain fine furniture, tapestries, an important collection of Tudor portraits and artefacts including two Books of Hours signed and inscribed by Anne Boleyn. In 1903, the Estate was bought by

the American multi-millionaire, William Waldorf Astor, who invested an immense amount of time, money and imagination restoring the castle and grounds. He inherited the benefits of the fortune of his great grandfather and succeeding generations of the Astor family. The Astor family’s story is a ‘rags to riches’ one, just like that of the Bullens in Tudor times. In 1783, a butcher’s boy called Johann Jakob Astor emigrated from the small German town of Waldorf to America. He took up fur-trading in the north-east, buying his furs from the Indian trappers. became increasingly successful until by the end of the 18th century he owned a fleet of 12 merchant vessels which carried his furs to Europe and the Far East and returned with manufactured goods and tea which he sold in America. When he died in 1848, he was the richest man in America. William Waldorf Astor inherited the original fortune and the continuing success in business and investment of the next two generations. He also developed a love for Europe, particularly when he was appointed American Ambassador to Italy between 1882 and 1885. He grew increasingly disenchanted with his native land, announcing publicly that ‘America was no longer a fit place for a gentleman to live.’ Astor left America for England in 1890 with a reputed 100 million dollars – the equivalent of at least ten time that amount today. He totally absorbed himself in his adopted country, buying Cliveden in Buckinghamshire in 1893 and, ten years later, Hever Castle and 640 acres of land from the Meade Waldo family. Between 1903 and 1908, with his architect, F.L. Pearson, Astor set about building a complete 100-

room wing in the style of a Tudor village attached to the castle to provide sumptuous rooms for family and guests. Cellars were built underneath what is today known as the Astor Wing and enormous boilers installed to provide hot water and central heating. Miles of cables and pipes running through the cellars provided power, light, heat and water to the entire complex. Astor also had a fire-fighting system, a power station and a private water supply. The award-winning gardens were laid out by Joseph Cheal and Son between 1904–1908, turning marshland into the spectacular gardens visitors see today. One of the most magnificent areas of the gardens is the Italian Garden which was designed to display Astor’s unique collection of Greek and Roman statuary, collected while he was living in Italy. Over 1,000 men worked on the grand design with around 800 men taking two years to dig out the 38acre lake. In just four years, the 125 acres of classical and natural landscapes were constructed and planted. Each area has its own style and character, from the magnificent Pompeiian Wall and classical statuary in the Italian Garden to the Tudor Garden and walled Rose Garden containing over 4,000 fragrant roses.

Gardening in April Spectacular Sunshine has encouraged us all into the garden, in some instances to survey the damage from the wet and windy winter - very often this damage presents new and exciting opportunities to make changes and introduce new plantings to the garden – and now is a very good time. It is very tempting with the warmer weather to want to plant out our patios and fill the borders with tender plants – restrain yourself if you can, Jack Frost may still pay an unwelcome visit! If you can’t resist then keep an eye on the forecast and when it is likely to frost cover your tender plants with a light horticultural fleece. Borders – If you haven’t already done so tidy the borders up removing weeds. Apply a good general fertiliser to give all the plants a nourishing feed to help them get going. Hedges – Now is the time to fill any gaps in the hedge. Why not try something new, add colour with evergreens such as Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ or try a native hedgerow with Fagus sylvatica (Beech) Carpinus betula (Hornbeam), Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn), all brilliant to encourage the wildlife into the garden. Shrubs and Trees and Roses – It is still a good time to plant these out. Ensure you have a large hole filled with well

rotted compost, add some fertiliser and water the new plant in. If conditions are dry keep the plant well watered for a few weeks until it is established. Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas – All these thrive on the acid clay in this part of Sussex and give fantastic displays of colour. They too benefit from a feed, sequestered iron granules or a liquid feed which after flowering you can water over the leaves to keep them nice and glossy green throughout the summer. Fruit and Vegetables – All these should have had a good mulch in March – if not then do it now. If planting out new fruit bushes, mulch them well and keep watered. You can sow your vegetable seeds, give them a head start in the greenhouse and get herbs under way as well. Lawns – Feed the lawn now for a good colour and strong growth. Rake out moss, remove weeds and sow seed onto any bare patches. A high cut every two weeks will suffice until next month. Remember to enjoy your garden, however large or small, savour the scents of blossoms and freshly cut grass, be inspired with the colours… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

The Countdown has Started.... Last June we published an article about local resident Daryl Farmer’s solo rowing race across the Pacific which will start from Monterey Bay, California and finish in Hawaii. In this time he will cover approximately 2400 miles of open ocean by the most direct route - although wind and currents may increase that distance considerably. The motivation and goal for the row is conservation of our oceans through supporting the charity, Earthrace and also supporting the Peter Andre Foundation for cancer research. Daryl has been getting lots of local support recently, starting with Peter Andre’s involvement, including filming with him at Weirwood reservoir to raise awareness - see thepeterandrechannel. com. Forest Row Primary school held a non-uniform day in exchange for each pupil donating a chocolate bar with an upbeat message written on it (to keep him going!). Plus in late March there was a send off auction at the Felbridge Hotel - one of his sponsors. Daryl leaves for the States on May 17th and the race will start June 7th. This solo row still needs support by way of sponsorship, donations, awareness spreading... whichever way possible. Please See:

Lemon & raspberry trifles

Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 0 mins

Treat yourselves to this easy dessert with its wonderful raspberry sauce. This simple recipe is very quick to put together and is perfect for Spring/Summer.

What to do: 1. Beat the soft cheese with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy, then stir in the yoghurt. Add 1 tbsp of caster sugar with the lemon zest and juice, mixing well. 2. Put half the raspberries to one side, then puree the rest with a blender or simply mash them with a fork or potato masher. Stir them into the whole raspberries and add the rest of the caster sugar.

Ingredients: 250g soft cheese 125g vanilla yoghurt 30g caster sugar ½ lemon zest finely grated and 1tbsp juice 250g frozen raspberries defrosted, fresh would also work well 8 sponge fingers broken into pieces

3. Divide the sponge fingers between 4 serving glasses or ramekin dishes and spoon half the raspberry mixture on top. Now spoon the lemon mixture into the dishes and finish off with the rest of the raspberry mixture. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve. Tip 1: If you make this recipe without the sponge fingers, it’s suitable for anyone with a wheat allergy too. Tip 2: Try serving the raspberry mixture spooned over fresh fruit, natural yoghurt, ice cream or hot porridge - it tastes superb! Notes: This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life ‘Supermeals for under a fiver’ cookbook

Business Profile: Matt at Progressive Electrics What training have you had?

Testimonial – Replacement Fuse board

I am City & Guilds qualified with certificates for 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, Part P and Testing & Inspection. I also have experience ranging from the replacement of consumer units and property rewires to the more specialist installations of swimming pool plant rooms.

Matt at Progressive Electrics inspected our existing electrics and talked us through our options and the process. As well as fitting the new fuse board Matt identified 3 faults with our existing electrics all of which he promptly rectified. We found Matt to be friendly and reliable, offering a very professional service at a reasonable cost. He was always happy to answer our questions and we would gladly recommend him to anyone who needs electrical work carried out in their home. Mrs Bowerman, Feb 2014

What do your customers most like about your service? I am polite, punctual, reliable and tidy but most of all I believe my clients appreciate the time I spend with them, prior to carrying out any works, advising them of the options available so they can make a fully informed decision. They also like that I provide accurate quotations, not estimates – the price will not change halfway through the job!

What accreditations, etc. do you have? I am NICEIC registered, which enables me to certify my electrical installations, saving the clients time and money. It also means my installations are covered by an insurance backed warranty, which gives clients peace of mind. 28 | April 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

The Best April Fools’ Hoax Ever? The spaghetti tree hoax was a three-minute report broadcast on April Fools’ Day 1957 by BBC’s Panorama, supposedly showing a family in the South of Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family “spaghetti tree”. Back in the ‘50s, spaghetti was littleknown in the UK, so many would have been unaware of what it consisted of. Charles de Jaeger, the cameraman, apparently dreamed up the story after remembering how teachers at his Austrian school teased classmates for being so stupid that if they were told that spaghetti grew on trees, they would believe it. The programme showed a Swiss family gathering a bumper spaghetti harvest after a mild winter and “virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil”. Footage of a traditional “Harvest Festival” was aired along with a discussion of the breeding necessary to develop a strain to produce the perfect length. Some scenes were filmed in Hertfordshire, others at a hotel in Switzerland. Broadcaster Richard Dimbleby’s voice lent to its authenticity.

Only seven million homes in Britain had television sets at the time. An estimated eight million people watched the programme. Hundreds phoned in to question the authenticity of the story or ask for more information about spaghetti cultivation and how to grow their own spaghetti trees! The BBC purportedly told them to “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best”. Decades later CNN would call the broadcast “the biggest hoax that any reputable news establishment ever pulled.”

CONSERVATION

The Trust itself consists of some 100 volunteers who undertake checking of ponies one day per month. Pony grazing was originally begun to conserve the flower-rich slopes of the Firle Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on the South Downs, which was seriously under-grazed due to the poor quality grazing and the incidence of bovine TB. During 2005 this expanded to include the carrying out of summer grazing of heathland in Ashdown Forest SSSI.

The Trust. Motorists driving across the expanse of heathland that is the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex or, taking an afternoon stroll along the eastern South Downs may have noticed numbers of ponies grazing... These ponies are quite likely to be owned by the Sussex Pony Grazing & Conservation Trust, which provides a grazing service to landowners and farmers of wildlife-rich areas that require grazing of course, or nutrient-poor vegetation.

GRAZING Currently, the Trust owns 77 wild (semi-feral) ponies, though this number may increase; all ponies are of the Exmoor breed, mainly pedigree, with most having come directly up from the West Country. They are extremely hardy, being able to tackle the tough, invasive purple-moor grass, gorse and bracken on Ashdown heathlands and tor grass on the Downs, conditions that modern farm livestock would not be able to cope with. They are also being increasingly used to graze the RSPB’s new 450 acre reserve Broadwater Warren reserve near Eridge; the Trust’s ponies are also grazing on Chailey Common. Background. Ashdown Forest and Chailey Common SSSI’s. These expanses of lowland heathland (covering 7,000 and 450 acres respectively) are noted for their wet and dry heath plant communities and associated insects. At Ashdown, birds to be found include the rare nightjar, dartford warbler and woodlark, the area being designated a SPA (Special Protection Area) due to the occurrence of these species. The Trust commenced grazing at Chailey in November 2012. The common is grazed as three separate areas so there is always

Broadwater Warren is being created from formerly coniferafforested heathland. Increasing numbers of ponies will graze the traditional heath flora as it re-establishes. Steve Wheatley, Sites Manager, says, “…Most notably the ponies have been very popular with visitors to the reserve; we have received lots of positive comments about how nice it is to see the ponies in the Wealden landscape... We look forward to their return in 2014 and hope that they will continue to be part of our heathland restoration project for many years to come.” The South Downs are of international landscape importance, renowned for their nutrient-poor, wildlife-rich chalk grasslands, which can contain up to 36 wild flowers and grasses per square metre! It is notably rich for insects, including the chalkhill blue butterfly. With some 93% of this precious habitat destroyed since the 1940’s, the remaining areas in Sussex form a significant proportion of remaining English chalk grassland. Malcolm Emery, Natural England’s Senior Reserves Manager says, “Over the years, the National Nature Reserves at Castle Hill near Woodingdean and, Lullington Heath on the edge of the Friston Forest, have benefitted hugely from the indomitable Exmoors during some testing winter seasons, for both the animals and the volunteers checking them... We hope to keep up our winter welcome for the ponies on the Reserves, not only because they do such a good job of maintaining the habitats, but also because they look so stunning!” Why The Need for Grazing? Heathland areas are suffering from habitat degradation due to the cessation in the mid-20th century of traditional summer grazing and winter collection of bracken by Commoners. This lack of use, the grazing being of very low quality, has led to the rank

at least one area for those visitors who do not want to encounter ponies whilst taking a walk.

growth of bracken, purple moorgrass and gorse, leading to these once largely treeless landscapes becoming more wooded. The South Downs in East Sussex have sites totalling over a thousand acres that are substantially dominated by tor grass. Tor grass is notorious for its vigorous growth and for overwhelming neighbouring specie-rich vegetation plus the myriad insects that thrive on them. The dense layer of dead matter (thatch) that accumulates during the autumn is an additional factor in suppressing bio-diversity. Tor grass is tough, unpalatable and of very low nutritional value to most modern farm livestock. The situation generally across this part of the world, is aggravated by nitrogen deposition from exhaust pollution; most wild flora having evolved to cope only with low nutrient soils. An Answer: An Old Breed for a New Situation. Targeted grazing by hardy wild ponies is a practical, landscape-scale strategy, aimed at limiting habitat degradation. The Exmoor Pony is the oldest of the native breeds of British ponies and is thought to be the closest pure descendent of ponies that inhabited Britain 100,000 years ago... long before the arrival of man. They have hardly changed since those prehistoric times when they lived alongside mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers and are one of the purest

examples of equines in existence. This means that they all look alike and have unique features that have helped them to survive for thousands of years. Exmoors were chosen for three reasons: 1) being very hardy and are highly suitable for low-quality grazing and the fact they are immune to bovine TB, 2) rather aloof in their response to people, 3) assisting a British breed by creating a new demand. Though not traditional to Sussex, they are carrying out a new job under new circumstances, mainly assisting with the safeguarding of SSSI’s. We only have mares and geldings which are in mixed-sex herds with well-established social hierarchies. Ponies at Standen House Exmoor Ponies are also being used at Standen House as well to help keep down invasive weeds and tough grasses, and allowing the more delicate wild meadow flowers to increase. This is done by not only eating the plants, but by reducing the nutrients in the soil (see photo). How To Become Involved. The Trust encourages public support by becoming a member or making a donation. People may also wish to become involved as Trust Lookers - ponies are checked daily by ‘Lookers’.
