Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Spring is now fully upon us and hopefully the weather is following suit! It’s a great time to start all the projects you want to get done in the house and garden and hopefully we can be of assistance to you with our local businesses. This month we feature two local residents who have been inspired to undertake journeys in support of their chosen charities/campaigns. We also have an article about the Wildlife A&E for this part of Sussex, which is a Q&A with the founder, pretty inspirational considering its humble beginnings! Thank you for supporting our local businesses. Please drop us a line if you’re a local charity or community group and need local promotion. With Best Wishes, Tally & Chris

‘Bloom’ ing Excitement! Be prepared for a burst of colour and blossom fever with the first ever tulip festival at local National Trust property Standen. Move over Holland, as from Monday 13th April to Sunday 10th May, over 8000 tulips will be on show around the gardens! Senior gardener Nick Delves, who curated this year’s tulip display, explains what the festival has to offer: “Tulip time at Standen is always pretty spectacular, but this year we’ve planted more tulips than ever before. There will be 28 different varieties on show, including a good mix of vintage and modern. Visitors will get to see many different forms of tulip aside from the popular single flower blooms; we’ve got double blooms, lily-flowering ones even a few Darwin hybrids in there.” They’ll also be a range of tulip-themed events to tie in with the festival. This is the most ambitious garden display ever put on by Standen, and represents the growing importance of the garden as a heritage attraction in its own right. A range of tulip events are programmed to coincide with the festival, including:

Tuliptastic: Tour & Flower Arranging Workshop Saturday 25th Apr, 4.30pm - 6.30pm A guided tour of the vibrant tulip display with senior gardener Nick Delves, followed by a flower arranging workshop in the Barn Café. £25 per person (includes all materials).

Tulip Photography Workshops Tuesday 28th Apr & Thursday 14th May, 8am - 10.30am Photography masterclass from expert Roger Bloxham, with bacon butties in the Barn Café. £15 per person.

Tulip Garden Tour Sunday 10th May, 8am - 10.30am Guided tour of our 8000 tulips in bloom, with sparkling wine and light breakfast. £15 per person. The festival is part of a major five-year revival of Standen, which aims to restore the Arts and Crafts-inspired gardens to their early 20th century heyday by 2017. Standen’s first owner, Margaret Beale, kept a garden diary which records the thousands of tulips she planted over the years. For further information visit www. nationaltrust.org.uk/standen.

I very much enjoy the creativity of this job. Be it in tutoring little ones, exam students or adults (privately in businesses or in classes at Central Sussex College) or having a great mix of levels in our monthly fun packed conversational workshops with Kaffee und Kuchen. Goings On in Grinstead Hopefully we’ll all soon be hanging up our coats and scarves as Spring has now arrived, and the great big outdoor world starts to beckon once again. So it’s a good time to give you all some advance information on the events in and around East Grinstead coming up this year. Our first big outdoor event of the year is the Vintage Bus Running Day, which takes place in the High Street on Sunday April 12th. It’s a firm favourite with parents and grandparents who have younger kids. The town is filled with wonderful restored vintage single and doubledecker buses that re-create the bus routes of yesteryear connecting the town with the surrounding villages. It’s a rare chance to travel by bus for free on roads that these days have no bus connections, and if you wish you can hop on and off the different routes and you can rest assured that your journey will return you to the High Street. Event takes place from 9:30am to around 4pm in the afternoon. May then arrives with a flourish with the East Grinstead leg of the Mid Sussex Marathon taking place on Saturday 2nd of May around 9:30am at the Rugby Club. Always good to see someone else do the hard work while you stand back and cheer them on! Then on the Monday Bank Holiday 4th of May the East Grinstead Lions are bringing us another brilliant May Fair. All the High Street is closed to traffic and the crowds pour in for this highly popular event. Lots of fun, with something for everyone and of course live performances in the Market Square area through the day. Let’s hope that we can all get together again at the end of that week, because on Sunday 10th of May the town celebrates the 70th Anniversary of VE Day. There’s going to be a giant Street Party in the High Street with tables and chairs provided and an on-site BBQ and a pay bar. There’s also the opportunity not only to bring your own picnic but also to use the many cafes bars and restaurants who will all be making a special welcome for the expected crowds. There will be a covered stage in the Market square with a sound system, and we have Adam the Magic Music Man opening the show from 4pm to entertain the kids, and then up until 9pm the sound of our own Conchord Big Band in full Glenn Miller Mode, and the fabulous Spinettes, a close harmony act who travel the world, will also be performing. This is a free event, but you should book seats in advance by calling 01342 410121. Simon Kerr, Tourist Officer East Grinstead

Greenfields English Language College Many of the students are working as au pairs and want to improve their English before returning home with their new skill. Others work in the local area in hotels, care homes, restaurants or have their own businesses. Classes are from 10am to 12pm, and the number of students in each class is between 3pm to 8pm, so that each student gets a lot of individual help. The emphasis is on conversation and listening skills, while also learning grammar and ‘new words’ and we provide examination preparation for First Certificate in English and IELTS examinations. In the mornings and evenings, our building at 59 Railway Approach is an international meeting point and you are likely to hear conversations in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, German, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Slovakian, Hindi, Bengali, or Thai. That is, until the English Language lessons start.

We also provide one to one lessons for anyone who prefers personal help. The first step is a free assessment and introductory lesson. So if you have an au pair, or are thinking of having one, or if English is not your first language and you would like to improve it, contact us on 01342 317417 or 319299, or email info@gelc.org.uk.

Effective Education Centre A line often heard at the Effective Education Centre is ‘I have walked past you so many times and didn’t realize what you do.’ Another, sadly, is ‘If I had only known about you earlier.’ This is therefore an open invitation to residents of East Grinstead and the surrounding areas, to come into the Centre to have a two minute tour of our small but interesting facilities, and to have a chat about what we offer. Which is, as it says on the tin, Effective Education. At this time of the year, GCSE and A level tuition is one of our main activities. It isn’t too late to arrange for extra help, either to get that important passing C grade or to have a boost towards an A or A*. We can’t promise miracles, but a few hours of tuition can do wonders and parents who support their children in this way will know that they have done their best to help them. For younger children, if you have any concerns at all about their progress at school, the free assessment we offer gives you the opportunity to see for yourself their strengths and weaknesses. Some parents go away relieved to find their children are doing well and don’t need help, some go away

relieved to have found a way to help them. Either way, it costs you nothing. If you are home schooling, you are welcome to come in to see if we can support you. Teachers or anyone interested in tutoring as a part time profession are also very welcome. Our address is 59 Railway Approach, RH19 1BT. Our phone number is 01342 317417. Our email address is services@effectiveeducation.net. We’ll be happy to hear from you.

Something Simple to Grow with the Kids this Spring (or by yourself!) By EG in Bloom

How to grow a Sunflower

How to grow the Sunflowers

The first thing to remember is that Sunflowers like the sun and well-drained soil, so the best place to grow them is a place in the garden that gets the sun all day long.

1. Sunflowers can be sown straight into the ground where you want them to grow and flower, so make sure there is enough space for the flower to grow tall and the area is weed free. You can use the trowel to help you remove any weeds.

When to grow Sunflowers When you buy a packets of seeds remember to read the back of the packet to see when it is best to grow them, but any time from the end of March should be fine. They flower in the late summer months.

What you need • Your Sunflower seeds – remember to look how tall they will grow to make sure you allow enough space for the flower to grow really tall. • A trowel • A small rake • A place in the garden to plant the seed or a large plant pot with compost. • Plant label and pen

2. Rake the soil to a fine tilth (a fine crumbly texture) and make some small holes about 12mm deep. Leave about 10cm space between each seed. 3. Place a seed carefully in each hole and cover them up with soil. 4. Alternatively, if you are planting your seeds in a plant pot put two seeds in the large plant pot about 12mm deep with 10cm between the seeds and cover them up with soil. 5. Water the seeds gently, keeping the soil moist. 6. As they grow, if the plants become crowded, thin them out to about 45cm apart leaving the strongest, tallest plants. 7. As your Sunflower begins to grow taller than you, it will need to help support the stem. You can do this by placing a long cane near the stem of each Sunflower then loosely tie the cane to the plant with string. 8. If your Sunflowers becomes really tall you will need the help of an adult to make a support big enough for the Sunflower. 9. Remember to water your Sunflowers as they grow keeping the soil moist. 10. Now all you need to do is watch your sunflower grow!! East Grinstead in Bloom is a group of local residents and volunteers who aims to improve the environment in which we live. This year EG in Bloom are aiming for their first Gold medal in the South & South East in Bloom competition. As part of this they are looking for volunteers to help on their projects from gardeners and conservationists, to people with marketing skills and even caterers.

Mothers’ quote The relationship between parents and children, but especially between mothers and daughters, is tremendously powerful, scarcely to be comprehended in any rational way. Joyce Carol Oates

Spring Activity: Kids can build a nest for birds It’s the time of year that many birds build their nests. A challenge to help local wildlife: build a nest that could hold birds eggs, and withstand the wind. Take a visit down to Ashdown Forest and look for materials that you could use: dried grasses, twigs, sticks, lichen, mud, etc. you can even use some wool. Next find a low fork in a tree in your garden or park and build your nest.

14

When finished, test the nest by putting small stones, cones or other objects that could be your ‘eggs’ to test for strength. Also give the branches a tiny shake to ensure the nest would stand up to the wind. Keep an eye on your nest over Spring and with a bit of luck it will provide a lovely home for a family of birds.

FAVOURITE FAMILY RECIPES: MUMS HELPING MUMS From the East Grinstead Mum’s Facebook Group

Howe Family Risotto My family recipe has evolved from a dish we used to have when we went camping and only had a one ring gas burner, so it was a one pot and a BBQ dish!

Ingredients: 8 sausages 1 onion, finely chopped 1 clove of garlic 1 tin of baked beans 1 tin of tomatoes 1 mug of basmati rice 1 tsp whole grain mustard

Method: Cook the sausages under the grill or in the oven. In a large pan fry off the finely chopped onion and add garlic once softened. Add the tin of tomatoes to the pan and simmer. Now put the rice on to cook in a separate pan with a pinch of salt. Once the rice and sausages are nearly cooked add the baked beans and mustard to the tomato. Once the rice is cooked, drain it and add it to the tomato and beans and stir. Cut up the sausages and stir in, then serve. It sounds odd but it’s so good. And better still, I always seem to have the ingredients in my freezer and larder! By Becky Melvin

Mexican ‘Lasagne’ Mexican ‘Lasagne’ is a current fav in my house! Chilli layered with tortillas and grated cheese with no added salt for small people.

Ingredients: 500g minced beef 1 onion 1 pepper, de-seeded and chopped Small tin sweet corn Tin baked/kidney beans 2 cartons of passata Squirt of tomato purée 4 tortilla wraps Spices: black pepper, chilli powder, paprika to taste Grated cheddar cheese

16

Method: Preheat oven to about 200c. Dry fry mince and onions, add peppers and cook for about 5 minutes until onion is translucent and the peppers and mince are cooked. Add passata, tomato purée, sweet corn and beans, add spices to taste. Cook the chilli mixture for about 20 mins until the oven is hot. Then layer chilli mixture, then tortilla, then a handful of grated cheese, repeat for as many layers as you can fit in your dish! Finish with a last layer of cheese and pop in the oven for about 15-20 minutes and until browned and crunchy on the top. Serve with salad and coleslaw! Makes enough to serve 4 normal adults, and freezes fine if there are leftovers. The chilli ingredients can also be thrown in the slow cooker (minus the sweet corn and beans) in the morning, put on low all day, then when you’re home, add the beans and corn and leave while the oven is heating up, then just construct the layers and put in the oven. Interior design: A self-made Journey It’s Springtime and so it’s the time of the year that many of us look to make a fresh start in a new home or refresh our own homes. Moving is a daunting prospect especially if you look around and see an abundance of accumulated belongings, or consider the prospect of going through the stuff in the garage or loft that you haven’t looked at since the last time you moved. There are some simple things that you can do to improve the appearance and saleability of your home.

Tidy up! This might seem obvious, but maintaining a tidy home can be difficult especially if you have children or animals. If your home is full of toys, get some good storage boxes that can be stacked and encourage the kids to pack their things away.

Clean! This costs nothing, but even an out-dated avocado bathroom looks better if it is clean. Close toilet lids and wash pedestal mats. The mould around the bath needs to go and replace the shower curtain. Keep kitchens free from dirty dishes. Don’t mask nasty smells with air freshener, find the problem and eradicate the cause. Ask a friend what your house smells like – get them to be honest!

Start packing You will have to pack things anyway, so make a start. Be ruthless. If you haven’t needed something since you last moved, give it to charity or sell it. Removal companies may lend you boxes. That collection of china dolls needs to go and you can live without them for a few months until they take

pride of place in your new home.

De-personalise Family photos and mementos have their place in moderation, but remember you need your buyers to imagine themselves in your house, not enjoy how YOU live there.

Take a good look around By leaving tatty wallpaper or frayed carpets you are restricting your buyers to those who can’t see past it. Not everyone can visualise the changes that might be needed to update your home into something special, so it is up to you to maximise the pool of potential buyers by appealing to as many people as possible, not just those with an eye for decoration or design. Buyers often over-estimate what it costs to replace carpet or redecorate, so reduce the figure in their head by doing minor repairs. Fix loose cupboard doors and replace missing handles.

Don’t neglect the outside If you have outside space make sure it is tidy, the lawn is trimmed, weeds are removed, jetwash and clean the moss from patios and decking. You don’t have to spend a huge amount to tidy and clean your house but be prepared to put the time in, it will make all the difference. Of course some of these points can be useful even if you’re not intending to move! By Melanie Laidler of ODD Interior Design, East Grinstead. Maybe it was a trip to the seaside, a visit to a theme park or maybe a ride on a steam train? Now think about how that day out made you feel then and the happiness that the memory gives you now. That’s exactly what The Rotary Clubs of East Grinstead Meridian, Crawley and Storrington work to achieve every year when they take approximately 100 18

Gardening in Spring been shoehorned in over the years and some of the colours don’t really work together – we all do it, tempted by the gorgeous plants at the nursery we know just the spot where it will go!

Spring is so full of promise and at last you see the rewards of all your Autumn planting efforts. The clumps of daffodils that adorn our verges cannot fail to bring sunshine and a smile to the gloomiest of days. By the time you are reading this we will have said ‘au revoir’ to the snowdrops and crocuses and a big hello to the majestic blooms of Magnolia soulangea and M. Grandiflora or the delicate petals of M. Stellata. These are the more common white/ pink/purple variety but have you considered the beautiful yellow magnolias? M. Daphne presents rich dark yellow petals often at the same time as its leaves and is perfect for a smaller garden, by contrast as a specimen in a larger garden M. Yellow Bird will not disappoint.

Well this year I’m actually going to do it - replant the front garden - the dark winter days were spent planning, plants and shrubs chosen and then dismissed, new ones included, I think I’m almost there with the planning . Every opportunity I’m out in the garden digging up, moving, imagining, it is very exciting. There will be some plants and shrubs that I’ll miss but to enjoy these I can visit other gardens. I’ll treat myself to new colours and specimens and yes of course there will be the odd mistake, but isn’t that part of the joy of gardening? Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursey

My front garden was planned and planted about twenty years ago and at the time I chose various shrubs and trees that I really liked at the time… but now I’m fed up with them! Some have got too big for the garden and look out of place, others have

Survival Can Be Shocking By Steve Morris Following my recent cardiac arrest in the Kings Centre, East Grinstead, in February of this year, I have launched a campaign entitled “Survival Can Be Shocking”. With the brilliant intervention from the Kings Centre team in reviving me with CPR and a defibrillator, I was then transferred to the East Surrey hospital to undergo a successful emergency stent operation. I am on track for a 110% recovery! During my second night in hospital I decided to investigate if defibrillators were available near to the High St, which the public could use 24/7. After walking the High St and asking in a number of shops, I realised people didn’t know where the nearest AED (Auto External Defibrillator) was kept, but then realised the only access to a 24/7 AED is outside of the Jubilee Community Centre – which is too far from the High St in case of an emergency.

Steve’s amazing recovery, shown here with the brilliant Kings Centre team, fuels the “Survival Can Be Shocking Campaign”

Exciting things so far: • The Kings Centre has kindly offered to fund and provide initial free CPR/AED training sessions and are hosting a CPR/Awareness day on the 21st June.

Generally the public are reluctant to use a defibrillator but the machine is simple to use and talks you through what you need to do – although it would, of course, be a scary and stressful situation. The reality is that you could be the only person who has a chance of saving someone’s life and the machine will not shock someone if they don’t need it.

• Community First Responders are arranging CPR/ Awareness open days at the library and Kings Centre.

The aims of my campaign “Survival Can Be Shocking” are twofold:

• The British Red Cross have agreed to provide CPR/ Awareness sessions going forward.

1. To increase awareness and identify potential training opportunities within East Grinstead (and beyond). 2. To identify existing facilities and assess opportunities to provide additional AED equipment in the community. To provide at least one public 24/7 defibrillator in the High St.

Please support the campaign in any way you can.

• The campaign will be in full swing at the Lions May Fair on the 4th May, working alongside the Community First Responders who do a great service.

Q&A with Debbie Johnson who operates the Wildlife A&E of this area

How did the Wildlife A&E get started in the first place? I have always had a love for animals and wildlife since I was small; helping birds and mice the cat caught and nursing them back to health, but it was when my daughter began working at the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield that my involvement in animal rescue really gathered pace. Members of the public would bring all manner of sick and injured wild animals into the centre; not knowing what else to do with them. The centre didn’t have facilities to deal with these animals, so as my daughter Samantha was the head keeper there at the time, she used to bring everything that needed help home to me. Her thinking was that, as I am a trained ‘human’ nurse, I would know what to do! I loved the challenge and it was no different to dealing with humans really; only the patients were usually much cuter! The only problem was that the animals couldn’t tell you what hurt or explain their symptoms. I used to end up taking orphans to work with me, as they needed feeds round the clock. Thankfully, I had very understanding, animal-loving bosses. In fact they used to lend a hand too. In 2009 we moved from Lingfield to Rotherfield to a larger house with a bigger garden. Then within a year, the children all left home and we were left with space! It was then that I decided to make it official and the Wildlife A&E was born. Pens were put up in

24

the garden, the conservatory was cleared, I bought a larger car to fit all the cages and bedding in and we were up and running. If you can think of an animal native to Britain, from owls to grebes, from swans to hawks and from hares to badgers; you name it we have looked after it. What role has your family had in the group? I have a very understanding and supportive husband who thankfully shares my passion for wildlife. David is never surprised to come home from work to find a cygnet/duckling in the bath or a hedgehog in the conservatory. He runs his own company but helps with the feeds and fundraising and mucks in whenever he can. My daughter, Louise who lives in East Grinstead, also helps; often looking after the animals in her home, collecting animals for me and she also does a lot of the fundraisers for us. Samantha, who now lives in Yorkshire, helps out when she is home, including house sitting for us so we get a holiday occasionally. What is the hardest part of running the A&E? The hardest part is a difficult one. There are those times where I have been up for nights on end with

a young fawn, trying to get it to feed, then once it is feeding well and putting on weight, doing all the right things and three weeks later suddenly dies. It’s heart breaking and has happened to me 3 years on the trot on my birthday! These were Roe deer which are very difficult to raise. The other problem is trying to understand what has happened to them before we get them. Of the three babies who passed away the first (we found out later), had been fed sugar beet, the second had an intestinal obstruction and the third had been attacked by a dog or dogs and never got over the shock. The other hard thing is trying to find food for the deer, who are with us for a year if they come in as orphans, and once they are weaned they have to be fed natural food they would find in the wild which means us going out to collect fresh browse every day. Depending on how many we have in our enclosures at the time, it can be a trailer load a day. Once that dies off we are stuck and have to feed vegetables/bread and hard feed, which gets expensive. The whole process is very time consuming as well. We are at the ‘scratching around for feed’ phase right now, so I am begging borrowing but not stealing everything I can get to feed them. What is the highlight of running the Wildlife A&E? The highlight for me is seeing any animal that has come in really sick or injured or orphaned, running/ flying off into the distance after they have been restored to health and can be released. Sometimes they look back to say thank you but not often! Nonetheless, it is always a very special moment. What support have you had from the local community? We had a lot of help from the community in Lingfield when we lived and I worked in the area. I worked at the local doctors surgery and all the patients would bring in donations of newspapers, cat food, dog food and blankets on a regular basis. Fundraisers

26

that we do are always well attended especially our Quiz Nights which we hold bi-annually at the British Wildlife Centre who donate their reception area to us for the evening. I should mention a great deal of thanks to them for their help. We have invitations to a lot of the summer fetes in the area to hold a stall and I am invited to deliver talks to evening/afternoon groups, schools and brownie/ scout groups. The Cat Protection League have loaned us a piece of their land for a deer release pen. We could not be more grateful to them for their support. What support would you like from the local community? As we are finding it difficult to feed the deer, we would be grateful for any vegetables, bread or fruit that has gone out of date or is surplus to requirements. We are always in need of cat/dog food, newspapers, bird food and blankets. We have an amazon gift list which is very well supported. I think it is great that people who want to help can buy something from that list and know that it will go directly to help the animals. I also think people are happy to support us because everything we do is voluntary, we don’t charge any admin or wages to Wildlife A&E, so every penny raised is spent directly on the treatment or feeding of the animals in our care at any given time. If there are any groups who would like to come and talk to them about our work, we are very happy to do so; we don’t charge we just ask for donations. Up for the South Downs

Local resident Chris Parfitt aged 52 is an HGV driver and ex-submariner. He’s taking on an extreme charity challenge that is pretty daunting - understatement! Here is a ‘Q&A’ with him: What’s the challenge? Taking part in “Since 1664”, a unique Yomp (a march with heavy equipment over difficult terrain) in the history of Royal Marines yomps that have been undertaken since 1664, the birthday of the corps. It will take place over the weekend of 23rd/24th May and the yomp will test the physical and in particular the mental endurance of the toughest yompers – 90% of this challenge is in the head! Described by the adventurer Bear Grylls as ‘truly ambitious and totally crazy’, the challenge is to walk the entire South Downs Way NON-STOP, a total of 166.4 kilometres! Who am I doing it with? Over 50 other yompers will be taking part in the event, I am part of a three person team called Pride & Passion, my fellow team mates are Michael “Jimmy” Page who lives in France and is a landscape

gardener also an ex-submariner, we served together on HMS/M Walrus in the early 80’s. Wendy Britton, a contracts manager who lives in Colchester, she is also the mother of a serving Royal Marine that has seen service in Afghanistan, she is also a grandmother! Who are we doing it for? We are raising money and awareness for UK Homes for Heroes, they provide help and advice to ex-servicemen who are homeless or are facing homelessness, they also provide outreach vans that feed and clothe ex-servicemen that are living on the streets, they have also recently opened up a day centre in London where ex-service personnel can meet, seek advice and get help with applying for work and housing. No politics, no CEO earning five figure salaries, every person who works for UK Homes for Heroes is a volunteer who dedicate their time to help our veterans. Why are we doing it? It is estimated that over 4500 previously serving members of the British Armed Forces are sleeping rough in the UK today. With MOD due to be making cuts this figure is going to rise. I believe that homelessness can affect anybody whether it is due to relationship break downs, unemployment or illness... we are only a few circumstances away from ending up without a place to call home. How can people donate? By visiting: www.since1664.com/sponsor-a-yomper/ and clicking on the team name Pride & Passion. Thank you for any sponsorship! We’d like to wish Chris all the very best for his challenge, Good Luck.

Local History Notes

Place Names by Dorothy Hatswell

Twyford Continuing with the theme of frequently asked questions in the East Grinstead museum to stewards, I was recently asked ”What does the suffix ‘tye’ mean?” I am ashamed to say that I had no idea. Afterwards I looked it up and found that it indicates land used for grazing. So at Herontye the grazing was near a lake and at Brambletye blackberries were in abundance, for example. This set me thinking that some other suffixes that I did know about might be unknown to some readers. These words are usually local and particular to one county or even smaller areas. Another common place name ending around East Grinstead is “lye”. This means a clearing

in a wooded area. Many such clearings or assarts (a piece of land converted from forest to arable use) occur around Ashdown Forest. People would make an open space where they could grow crops, sometimes on a small scale: fruit and vegetables for their own consumption, sometimes on a larger scale for the cultivation of cereal crops. West Hoathly means a clearing in the heath, the West to distinguish it in more recent times from East Hoathly, in the same way that Grinstead became East Grinstead when people travelled further afield and Grinstead could be confused with the other Grinstead which became West Grinstead. Grinstead, of course,

means ‘green place’. The prefix “Ash” usually means that the ash tree grew in large numbers in the area. In other places it might indicate that the area had been use for smelting iron. However, that used seems to be limited to field names rather than entire villages or hamlets. Ashdown Forest had large stands of ash trees, hence its name, but also of Scots pine and, of course, the “Sussex Weed”, the oak. However, the two latter species do not seem to have been reflected in place names here. “Ashurst Wood” has, in effect, “wood” twice in its name as “hurst” is a name for a wood in any case. The house on the Lewes Road, Brockhurst is another example. Brock is the

old name for a badger. Woods have several names “ley” as in Crawley Down indicates that this wood was home to many crows, although it is generally rooks who form colonies rather than crows who tend to be more solitary. Yet another name for wood is “shaw” but this only seems to appear in individual small areas of woodland and not give rise to names for settlements.“Down” is an interesting word. Downs are really “Ups” or hills. The name comes from the Old English word for hill; “dun”. Names such as Sharpthorne and Copthorne are fairly self-evident. The thorn in question could be hawthorne but in this whole area the gorse is abundant. The Latin for gorse is planta genet, which gave its name to the Plantagenet dynasty of English monarchs. It was said that a Plantagenet monarch would rule over England as long as there was gorse in bloom somewhere in the country. Whether this superstition was the cause of Richard III’s death on Bosworth Field is unlikely, but August is a month when the gorse blossom is less likely to be seen... “Ford” is an obvious one and is fairly widely used over the whole

Gravetye Manor showing the land behind it cleared for grazing and the forest beyond

country Oxford being, perhaps, the best known example of its use. Around here there are not many ”fords”, possibly because this area is a watershed - an area or region drained by a river or river system. The source of the river Medway, flowing south and the river Mole and the river Wey flowing north, all arise within a few miles of East Grinstead. We do not, therefore, have any large rivers that we need to “ford” (cross). However, there is one on the forest and that is at Twyford, so called because there are two ways of crossing the stream. Ashdown Forest was at one time enclosed because it was the hunting ground of kings.

To be able to enter and leave it, nearly forty gates were placed in the fence or “pale” around it. “Hatch” is another name for gate. Coleman’s Hatch and Chuck Hatch are examples of this. On the forest are several instances of the word ghyll or gill. This refers to a small stream or brook often in a ravine. The most famous one is Ghylls Lap which features in the Winnie-the-Pooh stories by A.A. Milne, set on the forest near Hartfield. The Milnes lived at Cotchford Farm, another example of a ford in the area. By the time of Christopher Robin the stream had been bridged and it was from this bridge that the game of Pooh Sticks was, and still is, played.

Local Club of the Month

Testimonials: ‘Always ontime, good quality work, overall a good job for a good price. Would defiantly reccomend and will use again on future work’. Craig, East Grinstead “Mark was very professional. Arrived on time. I was nervous about using a professional as I had done a lot of the decorating in my house myself but the wall paper I chose was very expensive and I did not want any mistakes. He was friendly, reassuring and easy to talk to. He also took the time to listen to what I had to say and was very neat and tidy. Would not hesitate to contact him again.” Catherine

The East Grinstead Climbing Club was formed in 1985 by Dave Roughley and others, as they put it, “EGCC was started by a few local enthusiasts who shared one basic aim - to explore the mountains and crags of the UK from the worst possible location”. It has grown in the 30 years that followed to a stable group of around 30 members who vary in their particular styles of climbing from alpine to indoors. Regular meets and trips away are taken to crags around the UK as well as the occasional trip abroad. In the future they hope to see a rise in members and a more active club with more trips to more places! For more information about the club see: www.eastgrinsteadclimbingclub.co.uk.

Mark was punctual, polite and efficient. He did a good job, left no mess and moved some heavy furniture back into position for me, without me having to ask him. He also saved me a roll of wallpaper by being very clever with the pattern. I would certainly use him again and would recommend him. Jill, Tunbridge Wells See Advert Below

Business Profile: Paul Nash, Allzones How did you originally get into the roofing business? Having been in the building industry since the early 1970’s we were requested to carry out some roof work about 28 years ago now. Initially I hired in professional roofers and received on the job training from them as an expansion of my own building business. During our years in roofing we’ve had additional training and product briefings as we’ve gone along both through manufacturers themselves and by using experts in certain areas that I’ve been fortunate enough to train under. What do you most pride yourself on in the service you offer? We always aim for a quality, cost-effective job. For instance, sometimes clients ask for repairs to be made to fix a leak but if this won’t actually solve their problem (i.e. the leak would come back and worse), then we won’t touch the job. And we don’t take on any work if we can’t deliver what the customers wants and more importantly needs, as otherwise we are not giving value for money. Why do your clients choose you? Good references, which include actual jobs that they can visit and see the quality of the workmanship and the finished result. 38

What is the highlight of your profession? The satisfaction of seeing a roof completed that is going to last for a lifetime, meeting new people of which some become friends. And of course roofers are always able to get good tans in the Summertime! What guarantees do you give to customers? We have insurance backed guarantees on tiled/slate roofing which means if we ever went out of business the insurance company would cover us, this would also include any woodworm treatment in the loft required. And on flat roofs we give a company guarantee of 15 years. Testimonial: Tobias School of Art & Therapy have used Allzones Roofing for both replacement and repaired roofs for many years. Their work is always to a high standard, good value and completed to time and price. The written contract with them is short and clear, and anything not included in the price is discussed and agreed. The site is kept neat and tidy (important for us when we have residents and students here). And they take pride in their work, which shows. For more information call Paul Nash on 07851 421104 or 01342 315250 See advert on page 3.
