Flat roof repairs
Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Dear Residents,
Whats inside this month
Welcome to our August issue! This is the month for summer holidays and relaxing, which we trust you’re doing plenty of! Honeybees needs lots of help this summer and we have two special articles about them, one from the EG Beekeeping Association and another featuring Ashdown Forest’s favourite fictional son, Winnie-thePooh.

From 1984, onwards and upwards
As we know George Orwell’s 1984, published in 1949, is one of the most influential novels in history. East Grinstead born Matthew Spencer is currently starring as protagonist Winston Smith in the highly acclaimed West End production of 1984 at the Playhouse Theatre, London. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with Matthew, whose thespian leanings were developed as a child growing up in our town: When did you first decide to get into acting? I’d always enjoyed performing the school plays when I was growing up, the first being ‘Oliver’ at primary school where I played Fagin. But I never really thought it was a thing I could do as a career. It was only after I got a place at Guildhall School of Music and Drama did I think this was something I could really pursue.
How long did you live in East Grinstead and what are your favourite memories of the town? I lived in EG until I went to drama school at 18. I loved my time at Sackville, where I started at the age of 11 and stayed on to do my A-levels. My drama teachers, Pam Griffiths, Robin Blanch and Joel Mansell were brilliant. I used to play cricket in the summer at Felbridge which I really miss, and spent my first nights out in what was then Jumpin’ Jacks/the Base and Martines. Very silly and happy memories of dancing. Were you in any local drama/theatre groups? I joined Forest Row Youth Theatre at the age of 13 after playing Bugsy Malone in their Summer School. I loved going to that every Saturday and entering Tunbridge Wells Festival with them. Again, some great teachers in Robin Shergold and Shane Hannam. After that stopped a few of us formed our own company called Stage Two and put in stuff ourselves. I also did a few shows with a Company of Friends, with my parents. What has helped you the most in propelling you into the West End? Going to drama school was a fantastic base and grounding to enter the industry. Doing the core work of your craft is invaluable for three years. But then the lesson really starts when you start working and try to glean as much from those directors and

me and my career so they were obviously so pleased for me. My parents came to the press night in June and I’m so happy they could be there for that. What is the most challenging part of playing Winston Smith? Without giving too much away, it’s 101 minutes with no interval and I don’t leave the stage so it’s a stamina thing really. The play is so well constructed that the journey of the character is taken on the ride through what happens. So when, near the end, it really ramps up, the play takes you to that point on its own. actors who have much more experience than you. It’s a job that you’re forever learning which is why it remains interesting and exciting. How did you come to have the role of Winston Smith in 1984 at the Playhouse Theatre? I’d worked with one of the directors, Robert Icke, a few years before, on Romeo and Juliet. Then when Robert and Duncan, the co-creators, were workshopping the play, in 2013, which often happens for new writing, I was called in. I stayed with the show and been part of it in some capacity ever since. What was your family’s response to your getting the role? They were and have always been so supportive of
What is the highlight of being part of the 1984 cast? It’s a really special cast/ensemble to be part of. Everyone gets on, and even when grim things are happening in the play we all find something to laugh about. This also extends to the whole crew, stage management etc., all great people. What does the near future hold for you? We take the show to Melbourne in October and then in January we’re taking the show to the USA. First the west coast in LA, then Boston and Washington. That takes us through to April next year. Then who knows... We wish Matthew all the very best in his future career. For more information see: www.playhousetheatrelondon.com

Baked stuffed vegetables Ingredients: 150g wholegrain brown rice 2 tsp vegetable oil 1 large onion chopped 2 celery sticks finely sliced 2 garlic cloves crushed 2 handfuls mushrooms (cup or button) sliced 1 courgette chopped 1 tsp dried Italian mixed herbs 4 large tomatoes halved 4 peppers, any colour halved and deseeded 1 pinch ground black pepper 40g hard cheese finely grated
What to do: 1. Put the rice on to cook in plenty of gently boiling water. It will take 30-35 minutes to cook. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and cook the onion, celery, garlic, mushrooms and courgette for about 8-10 minutes, until soft. Set aside. 3. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 5, 190°C, fan oven 170°C. 4. Drain the rice and mix with the cooked vegetables and herbs. Season with black pepper.
5. Slice the tops from the tomatoes and scoop out the seeds. Arrange them in a roasting tin with the pepperhalves. Fill with the rice mixture and sprinkle with the cheese. Pop the tops back onto the tomatoes, then bake for about 20-25 minutes, until the vegetables are tender. Tip 1: Try aubergines as an alternative to peppers and tomatoes, scooping out some of the flesh. Tip 2: If there’s too much rice mixture, just keep it to one side to serve with the vegetables when they are cooked. Tip 3: Add a few fresh basil leaves for an aromatic garnish.

Sharpthorne’s very own Superhome Pioneering owners of some of the UK’s most ecofriendly SuperHomes are hosting free Open Days this September. SuperHomes are older homes refurbished by their owners for much greater comfort, lower bills and far fewer carbon emissions at least 60% less! This means that visitors can expect to come away with plenty of ideas for greening their own homes. Households living in the East Grinstead area can visit Sharpthorne’s very own SuperHome on the 12th of September. Owned by Paul and Kathy Brown, this 1950s, detached property is now 84% less carbon intensive than before. Improvements include loft, floor and cavity wall insulation, coupled with a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system. A biomass boiler now provides the space heating and there are solar panels on the roof to provide electricity and additional hot water. The couple say, “Our motivation was to create a low energy, sustainable environment that would provide a flexible home for us into our retirement. The benefits of renovation have included lower running costs as well as avoiding further increases in the price of fuel oil. However the underfloor heating in the extension sitting room is the star of the show, providing all round comfort without the hot and cold air currents associated with radiators.” SuperHomes are some of the UK homes most

improved for energy use, making them fit for the future. Most have superior insulation; many have alternative heating sources and some produce their own energy. In every SuperHome you can learn about a range of installed technologies. Tours and Q&A sessions will let you quiz the owners, so you can discover what worked and get frank feedback on anything that didn’t. You can visit over 50 refurbished Victorian, Edwardian and post-war properties in September. The events are coordinated by the National Energy Foundation and supported by Green Open Homes. Entry is free. To find out more or to pre-book a place on a free tour, visit: www.superhomes.org.uk/183.
Laughter, the Best Medicine “Contact the Elderly”, East Grinstead group has been run by Malcolm Goman for the past 7 years. It is a group of volunteers who hold monthly tea parties, usually on the last Sunday of each month, in the local area for a small group of people who are over 75
years of age, live alone, have little or no contact with family and friends and are unable to get out without assistance. These parties last for a couple of hours between 3 - 5pm, hosts welcome members into their homes for tea, sandwiches and cakes but, more importantly, chat and laughter. Volunteer drivers take the members to and from the party safely as well as enjoying the tea with them. Neither the hosts nor the drivers charge any money so the service is free. Usually the parties are held in private houses but occasionally they are held in commercial premises. The photo shows a party hosted by Alexandra House Hotel. For more information about either hosting a tea party or recommending someone to attend a tea party or attending yourself, please call Malcolm Goman on: 01342 325134.

health/Beauty Mum’s quote My mum was never too keen on TV, so we kids all went to the library and got books out. Right from the start, I loved the works of Mark Twain. Every time I read about Tom Sawyer, I’d go out and do something lowlevel naughty, just like him.
Some ideas to keep the kids busy this holiday 1. Make a book. Buy some scrapbooks and get the kids to write and draw pictures with a theme. 2. Go to the local library and have the kids sign up to the reading challenge. 3. Have a family quiz - make sure there’s a small prize to get everyone into the competitive spirit.

Keep BEElieving in the Honeybee Oliver Sinclair of the East Grinstead Beekeeping Association provides us with a fabulous Q&A about this local beekeeping club and just how we can help our honey bees: What are EGBKA’s objectives? The EGBKA is a small group of enthusiastic hobbyist beekeepers based in EG and surrounding villages. Our aims are to promote and increase the local community’s understanding of helping honey bees and beekeeping by means of teaching adults and children through demonstrations at local shows and clubs. We also seek to train our members to become better informed beekeepers and try to provide education and support to people who might be interested in bees yet do not have the time or inclination to keep bees themselves. What are the biggest challenges of beekeeping? Some of the last few years have been the most challenging in living memory for honeybees – due to a combination of diseases, changes of land use and poor weather. This is not great news for anyone, as a majority of food we eat relies on pollination
by honeybees and other insects. Looking to the future this vital insect species will remain under threat as the climate changes, urban sprawl continues and other diseases threaten to hit our shores, meaning beekeeping will be of even more importance to the UK economy and our local environment. What is the highlight of keeping honeybees? Beekeeping is an amazingly fun hobby that involves constant wonder as you learn more about one of the most fascinating and impressive creatures on earth. You get to meet lots of likeminded people and contrary to popular belief you don’t need lots of outdoor space to keep bees. In fact many landowners and local residents will jump at the chance of hosting an apiary for nothing or at most a few jars of honey and the EGBKA has a list of such parties that we share with our members. What is the current priorities/ programmes for the EGBKA? Our main priority is finding a new

site for the association’s apiary; this is the place we keep our honey bees, teach new members and run taster days, etc. How can we support the bees even if we are not beekeepers ourselves? By reporting honeybee swarms to us: swarming is a natural process when colonies seek to increase their numbers. If you see a swarm contact EGBKA’s Swarm Coordinator who will collect it. Honeybees in a swarm are usually very gentle and present very little danger. Before calling us out we recommend looking at our swarm page as we get a lot of calls about bumblebees and wasps. By planting your garden with bee friendly plants: in areas of the country where there are few agricultural crops, honeybees rely upon garden flowers to ensure they have a diverse diet. You can encourage honeybees to visit your garden by planting single flowering plants and vegetables (e.g. runner beans, sweet peas, etc. ). Bees like daisy-shaped flowers: asters and sunflowers,

and herbaceous perennials in particular. Bees need a lot of pollen and trees are a good source of food. Willows, lime and fruit trees are exceptionally good, as are blackberries, so please resist cutting back brambles in your garden! Even mowing your lawn less frequently can help by allowing dandelions to grow - a perfect excuse to leave the lawn mower in the shed. Typical expensive British summer bedding plants sadly provide no nectar and pollen and are best avoided if you want to help honeybees. By buying local honey which helps beekeepers cover the costs of beekeeping. It is not mistreated to give it a long shelf life and tastes quite different to foreign supermarket honey. The flavour reflects local flora and can help alleviate hay fever. We find many people who say they don’t like honey, love local honey when they try it as invariably they have only ever tried the bland blended foreign honey sold in supermarkets. If you’d like to buy some local honey contact Oliver Sinclair: chair@egbka.org.uk. Finally by asking your MP to improve research into honey bee health: there is not enough information to combat the diseases that currently affect honeybees. Pollination by honeybees contributes £165m annually to the agricultural economy, yet the government only spends £200,000 annually
on honeybee research. Beekeepers have costed a five-year, £8m programme to secure the information to save our bees, incidentally during which time pollination will contribute more than £800m to the government coffers! Even the Defra minister, Lord Rooker, who holds the purse strings to finance this, has said that without this extra research we could lose our honeybees within ten years.... So please if possible, write to your MP in support of the bee health research funding campaign. What are the benefits of EGBKA membership and how do I become a member? EGBKA membership has many benefits, including help and advice on starting up and also giving you the chance to handle bees before you spend any money. For the new beekeeper, this can be invaluable. More importantly you will get to meet lots of other local, friendly beekeepers and can receive help when needed. For more information about beekeeping, attending beginner courses see www.egbka. org.uk. You can register your interest in EGBKA’s Spring 2016 course by emailing Oliver at training@egbka.org.uk.
Conquering the Impossible Forest Row resident, Allan Curtis, who works at the Queen Vic Hospital was awarded a special ‘Ebola Medal’ last month by the Prime Minister for his work nursing Ebola patients in Sierra Leone earlier on this year. He was sent out to the West African country as a part of a group of NHS volunteer staff. As well as being a qualified nurse, Allan is also a paediatric teacher, teaching clinical practice to less experienced nurses. Allan explains it was challenging to try to marshal all the knowledge he had to help in a situation for which he had no actual experience, working with people from many countries. In fact nobody had any experience of Ebola and all clinicians had come together to try to avert the crisis. They had to work in special suits, in extremely hot weather and could only work an hour at a time, which made it even harder. When the mortality rates improved, Allan explains he was able to pass on his clinical skills to locals so they could carry on the work when the international 18
team had to leave. Needless to say, quite a lot of teaching thus went on. On a light, non-political note, on the day of his award Allan was asked by the Prime Minister David Cameron what feedback he had for the NHS from his experience in West Africa to which Allan responded that not having to spend 20% of his time filling in paperwork (none of which was needed over there) meant he had that much more time to give to patients. This sentiment was then echoed back to him with David Cameron’s speech to the awardees later. Congratulations to Allan for this hugely deserved award.

NEW DUARIS SHOWROOM O his home town later. The company itself was established 54 years ago and has steadily grown a stellar reputation for high standards in the building trade over the years. The NHBC approved company draws from wealth of experience and is a specialist in providing everything needed for a successful build and project. From drawings and sketches, to on-site project management throughout the process and a successful and stress-free conclusion. Incidentally Wayne approximates that he has personally installed over 10,000 conservatories since he started in the building trade! In Wayne’s own words the company is very ‘user-friendly’ with high expectations and a high level of finish which is what they also strive to deliver, resulting in a stress-free conclusion to any project. The other very important point that Duaris aims to achieve is continual communication with clients throughout the duration of their projects; so they feel safe, secure and they know they will be delivered what was agreed. Duaris Building Contractors is a local company specialising in design, refurbishment and general building work to help people realise their home improvements goals. Their services and products include conservatories, orangeries, extensions, oak framed buildings and more. They have just opened their newly refurbished showroom on Imberhorne Lane, East Grinstead where you can meet friendly experts who will guide you through what products and services they have to offer.

Duaris also has access to inhouse workshops to help bring bespoke products to turnkey projects to give flexibility, so you can obtain exactly what you’re looking for. The Managing Director, Wayne Varney, has 30 years experience in the business trade. Having originally apprenticed as a brick layer at the age of 16, he later grew his own building firm in East Grinstead, developing a good rapport with the founder of Duaris before buying the Tunbridge Wells company with his step-father 12 years ago and moving it here to

As Wayne points out it is also very much how issues that arise during a project are managed and resolved and Duaris prides itself on dealing with such issues professionally and effectively. Recently under the flagship of Duaris, two further companies have been established by Wayne and his team: Virtuoso Joinery and Nuglaze. Virtuoso Joinery is a specialist manufacturer and supplier of timber-based windows, entrance doors, roof lanterns, conservatories, orangeries and bespoke joinery.

Ashdown Forest’s Pooh & the Bees Illustrations by Mark Burgess after E H Shepard. ©Disney 2015
So to help families understand the part they can play, the new guide includes a brand new short story and ten simple activities to support British honey bees - all featuring Winnie-the-Pooh and friends in various parts of England, lovingly drawn by illustrator Mark Burgess, who coloured the original E.H Shepherd black & white art and the latest book ‘Return to the Hundred Acre Wood’. Interestingly, the consumer research leading up to this guide provided an insight into the next generation’s views about care of the environment. Over four out of five (83%) British children aged 5-10 believe it is important to look after our environment. However less than a quarter (22%) of children are aware of any steps they could take in order to help Ashdown Forest’s favourite fictional son, Winnie the Pooh, likes nothing more than a lovely pot of honey to tuck into. So it seems only fitting that a new campaign to help save the honey bee has recently been launched in ‘partnership’ with our favourite bear. Egmont Publishing (the publisher of the classic Winnie-the-Pooh stories) aims to help Britain’s honey bee population. The famous Pooh characters feature in a newly released ‘bee-friendly’ guide that highlights simple, fun activities for families to do together over the summer in the great outdoors to help the honeybees. It is available in print as part of the BBKA’s (British Beekeepers Association) ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ member pack, or free to download from www.friendsofthehoneybee.com. The BBKA annual study surveyed 900 British beekeepers selected at random and sadly colony losses are continuing to decline. save the honey bees – although three quarters (76%) would like to help if they were told the honey bee was struggling to survive. David Aston, President of The British Beekeepers Association says: “While many people are aware of the plight of the honey bee, there are many that don’t know what they can do to help. We hope that by supporting our ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ initiative with the brand new guide inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh, families across the country can get involved, making a practical contribution and supporting bee health research.”

The Wild Carrot
hinting to its key identification characteristics. The flowers are arranged in a compound umbel, meaning the flower stems all originate at the same point, like an umbrella. Then at the end of each of the flower stems there is another even smaller umbrella of stems, hence the “compound umbrella” or “compound umbel”. But a word of warning here! The Apiaceae family is home to two of the most deadly poisonous species of plants in the UK. Namely, Hemlock and Hemlock Water Dropwort. Therefore NEVER consume any species of this family unless you are 100% positive of its identification.
More often than not, the plants we forage can be compared to farmed or home-grown vegetables and herbs while being really quite different all together. Having their own unique flavour, medicinal and nutritional values. But every once in a while we come across a wild version of a common vegetable, and this article is about one such plant. Finding the wild carrot, Daucus Carota is like stepping back in history, a virtual time travel if you will. It is almost unchanged from its historical predecessors. Although fossil pollen samples from the Apiaceae (carrot) family have been dated to between 35 – 55 million years ago. The origins of the humble carrot stretch back about 5000 years to the area now known as Afghanistan, from where it slowly spread even as far down as the Mediterranean. Although the orange carrot we know today was developed from the wild species in about the 16th Century, discoveries of seeds in ancient archeological sites have shown that carrots were used in England during the Iron age and in Switzerland during the Neolithic and Bronze ages. This shows that ancient man had already discovered the culinary and most probably the medicinal uses of both the seeds and the roots of wild carrot. There is little evidence to suggest that they were cultivating the plant during these periods though.
Wild carrot is also known as Queen Anne’s Lace or Birds Nest Weed due to two aspects of the compound umbel. Firstly it derives the name of Queen Anne’s lace due to one tiny purplish floret in the centre of the white florets. The association is with Queen Anne (1655-1714) who, it is said, pricked her finger while making a lace collar, staining the lace with blood. Botanists on the other hand believe the plant is using mimicry to encourage pollinators. The red dot is said to mimic an insect and so entices others in. The other name of ‘Birds Nest Weed’ is due to the shape of the umbel once it goes to seed. The whole umbel closes up on itself taking the cup-like shape of a small nest. Other than a wonderful vegetable, the wild carrot has been used as an effective herbal medicine throughout history.
So moving forward to modern day, what do we now know about this plant? As previously mentioned it’s a member of the Apiaceae family, formerly known as the Umbelliferae family. The former name 26

It is known as an aromatic herb that acts as a diuretic, soothes the digestive tract and stimulates the uterus. It has been found to support the liver and due to its diuretic nature it stimulates the flow of urine and the removal of waste by the kidneys. An infusion made with the leaves of the plant has been used in the treatment cystitis and kidney stone formation, and even to reduce stones that have already formed. Carrot leaves increase levels of sex hormones as they contain significant amounts of porphyrins, a pituitary gland stimulant. The whole plant is medicinal from the flowers (an infusion used in the treatment of diabetes), to the seeds (treatment of oedema, flatulents, indigestion and menstrual issues) to the root (which is used used to treat delayed menstruation). As with all herbal medicine, care must be taken when pregnant, this is especially with relevant with Wild carrot. The root of the wild plant can induce uterine contractions and the seed was used as a traditional ‘morning after’ contraceptive.
version. The young roots are tender and can be quite sweet, whilst the older roots are quite woody. While the younger roots can be eaten raw and gently cooked the older roots can be used when making stock and discarded. The seeds have an amazing flavour, like a cross between carrot and caraway. They have been used historically to flavour beers and give a unique flavour to desserts and fruit coulis. I have used them in the past as one of my many wild ingredients for a spice mix for curing mackerel. Although related to the cultivated carrot, the Wild carrot seems to offer so many more culinary and medicinal opportunities, and the best thing is it’s abundant, sustainable and local. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.
Unlike the supermarket bought carrots, the root of the wild carrot is not the only part of the plant that I use. The flavour of the wild carrot is intensely “carroty” and so the leaves make a great addition to salads. Or they can be used as a garnish on dishes giving a carroty herby flavour. The root of the wild carrot is white in comparison to the cultivated

The Worshipful Guild of Mercers Local History Notes
by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum
Image of Caxton Manor about 2010
East Grinstead has two historic links with the Worshipful Guild of Mercers: Richard Whittington and William Caxton. Richard or Dick Whittington, who was Lord Mayor of London four times in the late C14th and early C15th, was a mercer. He left money in his will to found a college or almshouse for the poor at St. Michaels Parish in London. The college relocated to Felbridge in 1966, where it is still fulfilling its original purpose of giving a home to those in need. The present buildings house fifty six people, mainly women. It is set in twenty acres of glorious parkland. Whittington was a man dedicated to helping those less fortunate than himself and initiated many public projects to improve the community. During
30
his lifetime he funded a drainage system in Billinsgate and Cripplegate, and also built a new ward at St Thomas’s Hospital for unmarried mothers. Probably unique at that time. He also had erected a public toilet seating 128 people which was cleansed twice a day by the tide on the River Thames! He married Alice Fitzwarren in 1402 but they had no children. The pantomime story of how he went to London with his cat which he subsequently sold to rid an island of rats and so make his fortune has no evidence to prove it. However when the parish church of St Michaels, Highgate, where he worshipped and was later buried, was excavated, a mummified cat of the right period was found.
living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk
Perhaps the cat story was true after all... One of his colleagues at Mercers Hall, who also became Lord Mayor in 1439, was a wealthy merchant, Robert Large. He took William Caxton as his apprentice in 1437 when he paid the Mercers’ Company two shillings as a fee. Large died only two years later and left money in his will to all his apprentices including Caxton. William Caxton was born in Hadlow in Kent, the son of a farmer. He had a basic education which allowed him to apply for an apprenticeship with the mercers. Caxton travelled to Bruges, probably while still an apprentice. He soon became a merchant in his own right. imported wool from England and exported luxury goods such as furs, silk, ermine and saffron. He amassed quite a fortune in this way and was appointed Governor of the Company of Merchant Venturers. He was fascinated by the printing presses there and went to Germany to learn the printing process for himself. He bought a press from Germany and had it transported to England. Thus he started printing books at Westminster in 1476. His command of languages, (he spoke French, Dutch and Latin), enabled him to translate many books into English. It spread literacy across the country and he was criticised for this as it was feared that it could lead to the education of the poor! One of his patrons was Lord Rivers, the brother-in-law of Edward IV whose wife’s lady-in-waiting was Katherine Lewkenor of Brambletye. Her memorial brass is in St Swithuns Church. This royal connection stood him in good stead when he returned to England. Caxton was the first person to print in the English language. Among his early publications were “The Canterbury Tales “ by Chaucer. In his preface to the book he wrote; “The worshipful fader and first

foundeur and embellisher of ornate eloquence in our Englissh. I mene Maister Geffrey Chaucer.”
Caxton was buried next to her. By the time of his death Caxton had printed over one hundred books.
He also published Morte D’Arthur by Mallory.
The house he was born in was dismantled in 1436 and transported to Wall Hill in Ashurst Wood. In the 1950s it was the home of Sir Archibald McIndoe and his wife Constance. It was at that time called Miswells Manor, it has since been changed to Caxtons. The gardens are open each May for the Open Gardens Scheme. They are well worth a visit.
The Sarum Missal he printed in Latin in 1487 was recently bought by the National Trust for £500,000. Caxton died in 1491 leaving a daughter, Elizabeth. His wife, Maude, predeceased him and was buried in the churchyard of St Michaels. When he died

Cinestock’s hugely popular showing of ET on the High Street last year was one of the most popular events in the town calendar. This year bigger, better plans are afoot. We ask proprietor Oliver Tulley to tell us more: What inspired and lead you up to starting Cinestock? Since the age of 16, I have worked in the event industry starting in my home city of Hong Kong. These have been music based events which has seen me travel, live and work around the world. What started Cinestock was actually a combination of things: a friend of mine was doing a drive-in cinema, and although a great idea, the execution of it sadly had faults, and I found myself fixing these.

Quote Something my mum taught me years and years and years ago, is life’s just too short to carry around a great bucket-load of anger and resentment and bitterness and hatreds and all that sort of stuff.
This started me thinking as to what it could be and where it could go, another friend wanted to do an open air movie night but had no experience in running or putting on events, so we decided to give it a go as a team of three. The next season it was decided to expand which saw lasts years screenings and the large crowd of 1400 people at the East Grinstead High Street event.

Since then we are now doing open air cinema at festivals, universities, and increasing our own season to include drive-in cinema nights locally, as well as our open air cinema.

What has the response been so far? This year the response has been amazing, our FB page is growing hourly, it’s becoming a hugely popular evening out. How has it progressed from its inception? We started with the open air cinema on the Island of Zante in Greece this year, we are also looking to take it across the pond to the USA and down to Mexico. We have also expanded in the UK, with bookings now going to universities and festivals this summer. We also have a selection of exciting nights running in the local area. For more information see wwwe.cinestock.co.uk and Facebook by searching Cinestock.

The Month of August August was named in honor of Augustus Caesar. It has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar’s month of July had! Previously names Sextilis in Latin, it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar. Incidentally, they took that extra day from February! The Anglo-Saxons called it Weod monath, which means Weed month, because it is the month when weeds and other plants grow rapidly. 1st August is Lammas Day coming from the Anglo-Saxon Hlafmaesse which means Loaf Mass, it used to be harvest time in Britain. This day marked the beginning of the harvest and predates the Christian harvest festival. Folk lore tells that if the first week of August is hot then winter will be white and long... Time will tell!
