Testimonial: “I just wanted to say thank you both so much for doing such a brilliant job—and for coming out so quickly to do it. I still can’t believe it’s done—I am eternally grateful and if anyone else needs some work done you guys will be at the top of the list. Fantastic—thank you again.” Louize Mason-Styrron “We have employed Allzones Roofing over the past 5 years, in this time they have re-tiled a large house built in 1916 including dormers and gables. Re-tiled a cottage roof using new tiles on one side and re using the old tiles on the other side. Removed felt from a roof on a large studio and replaced with fibre cement based tiles. Recently re-tiled a bungalow with shingle tiles (wood). All the work has been carried out with efficiency and excellent workmanship throughout. I would recommend this company.” Peredur Art Centre

Wealden Interiors Who would believe that its been 3 1/2 years since Wealden Interiors moved from Crawley Down, to their new showroom & offices in Charlwoods Place East Grinstead. We caught up with principal designer Roy Shepherd recently to find out what has been happening since the new showroom first opened in February 2013. ‘I can’t believe the response, we’ve just gone from strength-to-strength since making the move 3-years ago, the showroom is bigger & better than before, and we have plans to increase the area & number of displays further, later this year – to include bedrooms & a media centre’

Roy told me that it is a constantly evolving & growing business, and they have been supplying & installing kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms in the area since 1982. So I asked him what makes them so successful? ‘apart from the quality of the products we offer, at Wealden Interiors whether an enquiry starts with a visit to the showroom, a website enquiry, or from a telephone call, people will receive the same friendly & courteous service. Our aim is to help in any way we can, so we hope that they will consider Wealden Interiors for their next home improvement project. Much of our work comes from repeat customers & recommendations – that speaks volumes’.

It’s clear that they are understandably proud of what they have achieved thus far, but Roy explains that they can’t just rest on their laurels ‘we’re always looking ahead to the next project, the latest products, or new display etc’. So, better get along to see them soon if you want your kitchen or bathroom before xmas!

After a very long journey down, they seem pleased with their new living arrangements and are causing quite a stir! Please feel free to ask the team any questions on them, and The Donkey Sanctuary, we will be happy to help. Are you a Secretly Happy Person? August is the month for ‘The Secret Society of Happy People’ (SOHP), which is an organization that celebrates the expression of happiness. So now you have an excuse to show that hopefully not too elusive emotion, in case you felt you needed one! Founded in August 1998 by Pamela Gail Johnson of Irving, Texas, the society encourages thousands of members from all around the globe to recognize their happy moments and think about happiness in their daily life... Maybe we could all do a bit of this; just as we share in global grief, so we should share in global happiness. The Secret Society of Happy People supports people who want to share their happiness despite the ones who don’t want to hear happy news. Their mottos include “Happiness Happens” and “Don’t Even Think of Raining on My Parade”. Founder Pamela states: “I’m easily amused so you could say I’m happy most of the time. Not a Pollyanna – I’m like most people, I get a little annoyed dealing with chronically cranky people or when my car is making a funny noise – but I get through most days with a smile. “Then, sometime in 1997, I had an awakening. Some people not only didn’t care whether or not I was

happy — they actually seemed annoyed by it. (Gasp!) And most of the time they didn’t want to hear anything about it. “I started to notice lots of other happy people, like me, tended to keep a lot of our happiness to ourselves, or a secret. So one day I started to wonder where all of the happy people were. “Then my imagination kicked in and I saw them standing around in a room chit-chatting about all things happy. Then I saw their banner: The Secret Society of Happy People. That was so the identities of the not-so-secretly happy people would remain a secret in case a parade-rainer crashed the party - because all happy gatherings are a party.” The idea is to stimulate people’s right to express their happiness “as loud as they want”, and refers to many people’s reluctance to speak out when they have something joyous to share as they fear grumpier people might rain on their parade by making fun of them or questioning their need to express happiness. The Society believes it’s always okay to share your happiness and they even identified 31 Types of Happiness! (A few are below.) So, just in case you needed an excuse to smile this August, here it is!

What Goes Around By local author Julie Corbin

The two questions I’m most often asked as a writer is where do I get my ideas from and how long does it take me to write a novel. Well… ideas are all around us and it’s a case of catching hold of an interesting premise and shaping it into a satisfying story. And that process can take anything up to two years.

There are some serious issues affecting our world at the moment and fiction seems frivolous by comparison, doesn’t it? … Or does it? … Is fiction important at all? Writer and philosopher Albert Camus said, ‘Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth’. Fiction works in mysterious ways, often by stealth, because while entertaining us, it also helps to shape our core values and make sense of our place in the world. Stories are embedded in our DNA, from ancient epic poems to fairy tales, both heroic and cautionary, often spoken or performed rather than read. We are each of us the main player in the story of our own lives. We learn by our mistakes, and sometimes we learn by other people’s mistakes, and often we’re nudged into realisations by works of fiction. 10

Writers tend to circle recurring themes, in my case: family, secrets and betrayal. While most of us form relationships, often long-lasting ones, we make compromises, adapt our behaviours, hide thoughts maybe, scheme even? … We’re not bad people, it’s just that sometimes we make choices that come back to bite us. My fifth novel, What Goes Around, was published in ebook by Hodder and Stoughton in July this year. Psychological fiction keeps us turning the pages because it engages the brain – we are given clues and have plot points to wrestle with - but it also shows us what can go wrong when we don’t behave as carefully or as well as we should. It allows us to vicariously live another person’s life. What Goes Around follows the lives of two women, Ellen and Leila. Ellen is the ex-wife and Leila is the new woman, living in Ellen's house, sleeping with Ellen's husband. Each woman has her own secrets to keep. Leila's COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY brother is back in her life and is determined to rake up their past

living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk

while Ellen is out for revenge. She wants her home back and she wants Leila to pay for breaking up her marriage. Her plan will make her do things she never thought herself capable of. One of the women will end up dead. But which one? And finally to the title – titles can be difficult because I want to intrigue the reader, to give him/ her a flavour of the theme. Fiction has a wonderful way of making consequences matter, and in this case, What Goes Around… Comes Around. For those of you interested in writing stories, I will be co-teaching a course with Mel Parks, beginning in September, for details please email hello@ honeyleafwriting.com. See page 38 for more details.

Olympic Games Facts ;;The early Olympic Games were celebrated as an athletic/religious festival from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., at which time the games were banned for being a pagan festival (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus!). Then in 1894, a French educator, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, laid out his vision for a revived Olympics, and thus the modern Olympics were born. ;;Quite rightly, the host Greece won the most medals (47) at the first Olympics in 1896. ;; The five Olympic rings represent the five major regions of the world – Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania, and every national flag in the world includes one of the five colours, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green and red.

;;The modern Olympic Games are based on the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. ;;In the Ancient Olympics competitors won the prize of an olive branch wreath! Well why not? It was all about honour then. ;;Greece, Australia, France, Great Britain and Switzerland are the only countries to have had representatives at every Summer Olympic Games. ;;The USA has won more Gold (976), more Silver (758), more Bronze (666) and more total medals (2400) than any other nation at the Summer games.

;; Until this year, three continents – Africa, South America, and Antarctica – have never hosted an Olympics.

;;The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics more times than any other nation, four in total: St Louis 1904, Los Angeles 1932 & 1984, and Atlanta 1996.

;;Larisa Latynina, a gymnast from the former Soviet Union, finished her Summer Olympic Games career with 18 total medals - the most in history.

;;Great Britain is the only country to have won at least 1 gold medal at every Summer Olympics. Woo hoo!

Summertime and the Living is Easy (and this can help make it even easier)

The Summer holidays can be a tricky business when it comes to entertaining children at any age, so the team here at The Creative Hub, East Grinstead, has come up with a few tips on how to keep your child busy, happy and away from the TV and game consoles this Summer: It’s all about clay – we find children (and even adults) of all ages and capabilities love using clay to sculpture models, pots and trinkets. We like to use air drying clay which dries overnight and can be moulded and painted with pre-mixed paints; all materials can be purchased for a reasonable price on Amazon.

Daily Diary Sketchbook - record each day of the summer as an illustration. We stole this idea from a 7-year-old artist who recently visited our studio from France. It is a wonderful way for children to express themselves, you can follow their artistic progression, but it’s also exciting to see what they will illustrate – it could be factual or fantasy!

Be creative and tire the kids out! Sussex is full of stunning walks so why not take a picnic, pencils and a couple of drawing pads (you have to join in too!) and go for a walk. Forest Walk between East Grinstead and Forest Row is a great path we like to use as it’s not only close to our studio but it is safe, has lots of viewing points, often a horse or two can be found along the way and it has lovely stop off points where you can sit and draw the stunning scenery and have a picnic - a win/win. 14

Mask Making – we have run a few workshops on mask making

as so many children of all ages love making masks! These can be simple and made of card or they can be more intricate and constructed of wood or paper mâché. Pinterest.com can be good for inspiration and instructions. The Creative Hub’s Summer Art Camp still has some spaces available. See their website www.createcreatecreate.co.uk or call Cheryl on 07595 360 300.

AUGUST by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

victories, notably the conquest of Egypt. The Julian Calendar, by then over one thousand years old, had become progressively out of step with the true date by planetary reckoning.

Augustus Caesar

August is a month that appears in first the Julian Calendar and, since 1752, the Gregorian one. It originally was called “Sixtus”, as it was the sixth month of the Roman Calendar in use at the time. Designed in 753 BC by Romulus, one of that famous duo, Romulus and Remus, the year was divided into ten months, starting in March. By 700 BC two more months had been added to the beginning of the year, becoming what we now call January and February. The Roman calendar was overhauled by Julius Caesar in 45 BC, naming the seventh month, July, after himself. About the turn of the Millennium, Sixtus was renamed in honour of Augustus Caesar. He supposedly chose that particular month, as it was during August that he had his greatest

16

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII decided that something needed to be done about it, as church festivals were occurring at the wrong time. His advisors calculated that the length of the year, the time it takes for the earth to complete its orbit around the sun, was reduced from 365 days and 6 hours to 365 days and 5 hours, 49 minutes and 12 seconds. In order to keep the correction in the future the leap years, which had been every four years, were reduced to every year divisible by 4 except if it

was divisible by 100. This made an over-correction and so, if the centuries were divisible by 400, it was a leap year also. Strangely the extra day was inserted into the middle of February, it being the shortest month, by having two February 24ths. It is now, of course, tacked onto the end and becomes February 29th. Most of the Catholic countries adopted the new calendar almost immediately, but Protestant nations, such as England, did not. They feared it was part of a Catholic plot. It was only a few years since the reign of Elizabeth I had returned England to the Protestant faith after her older sister, Mary Tudor or Bloody Mary, had tried to reverse Henry VIII’s rejection of the Pope as head of the Church in England. It was not until 1752 that England adopted the Gregorian Calendar. It necessitated “losing” eleven days from the calendar, so Wednesday, September 2nd was followed immediately by Thursday, September 14th 1752. No days were lost, of course, only dates. The stories of people rioting in the streets are apocryphal. The myth seems to have arisen by Hogarth printing a scene where banners bearing the slogan, “Give us back our eleven days”, appear. There is no historical evidence of any riots. We were not the last to accept the Gregorian Calendar; Russia did not change to it until 1918

and Greece was the last to succumb, in 1923. By that time they had to lose 13 dates, rather than 11. The changes led to several inconsistencies. The traditional beginning of the year had been, until 1582, Lady Day or March 25th. This now fell on April 5th and so this is now the beginning of our financial year for tax and other fiscal purposes. Similarly, May Day, May 1st, was really May 14th, when the weather was warmer and clouts could be cast. However, the date rather than the day was chosen in this case and we still celebrate May Day on the first of the month. August is the traditional month for harvesting cereal crops. Lammas Day, August 1st, is the day that haymaking finished and harvesting cereals began. The word “Lammas” is a

corruption of loaf-mass. The first wheat to be cut was made into a loaf which was then blessed in church. In the days before mechanisation, everybody was expected to help get the harvest in. People relied on the harvest to carry them through the lean months of winter and early spring. This is the historical reason for the long summer holidays from school, because even quite young children were needed to help in some way. Once the last sheaf was “safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin,” it was taken in procession to the farmhouse and all joined in the harvest supper, which was a celebration and a thanksgiving. August, therefore, plays a pivotal role in our agricultural year. It is the end of the summer in meteorological terms and its last day heralds the beginning of autumn, which marks the winding down towards winter. Squirrels and hedgehogs begin preparations for their period of hibernation, the leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs start turning to gold and red, and schools look forward to their next academic year. Perhaps we should count September 1st as New Year’s Day!

Testimonials: ‘Always ontime, good quality work, overall a good job for a good price. Would defiantly reccomend and will use again on future work’. Craig, East Grinstead “Mark was very professional. Arrived on time. I was nervous about using a professional as I had done a lot of the decorating in my house myself but the wall paper I chose was very expensive and I did not want any mistakes. He was friendly, reassuring and easy to talk to. He also took the time to listen to what I had to say and was very neat and tidy. Would not hesitate to contact him again.” Catherine Mark was punctual, polite and efficient. He did a good job, left no mess and moved some heavy furniture back into position for me, without me having to ask him. He also saved me a roll of wallpaper by being very clever with the pattern. I would certainly use him again and would recommend him. Jill, Tunbridge Wells

Mushroom risotto

Risotto is much easier to make than you might think. All you need is the correct rice (see tip) and a bit of patience. Serves: 4 adults • Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins

What to do: 1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan or saucepan and cook the spring onions over a medium-high heat for a few seconds. Add the rice and fry over a low heat for about 1 minute, stirring all the time, until it looks glossy but not brown.

Ingredients:

1 tsp vegetable oil 5 spring onions trimmed and chopped 300g risotto rice 1 garlic clove crushed 3 handfuls mushrooms (cup or button) sliced 900ml vegetable or chicken stock 75g frozen peas defrosted 1 pinch ground black pepper

2. Add the garlic and mushrooms, then pour in about half the hot stock and stir well. Cook over a medium heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring often and slowly adding the remaining stock a little at a time, until the rice has soaked up all the liquid. 3. Check that the rice is tender. It should have a nice creamy texture. If it needs cooking for a little longer, add a little more hot water. 4. Add the peas, stirring gently to mix them in. Cook for another 1-2 minutes. Check the seasoning, adding some pepper if needed. Serve. Tip: Use proper risotto rice if possible because it gives a delicious creamy texture. Types called Arborio or Carnaroli work the best.

The First and Last Foreign Holiday A local who goes under the name of Alice Wilde has launched a new blog with an honest account of life and parenthood (with no slick veneers!). The blog is specifically for people who feel that life has gone possibly a little off kilter, a little far from their original ideals... It’s a touch of solidarity and with a dose of good humour to help oil life’s cogs: As we approach the holiday season and we all get excited about the joys of jetting off to places where you don’t need the central heating and a 13.5 tog duvet in July, I thought I would share a couple of snippets of wisdom gleaned from my recent family holiday to Lanzarote with my partner and our combined 5 children. I shall pass on the lessons garnered on this first, and probably last, important foreign holiday together:

1)

2)

Do not rely on your partner to wake up at the right time for your cheap early flight. Not unless you have specifically talked about it.

tropical island off Africa’s West Coast when an off-peak return train ticket from East Grinstead to Newcastle is £222.50.

They may be relying on you to wake up at the right time.

And it’s not only due to the time you’ve chosen to fly.

Because neither of you have specifically talked about it.

You have not paid for any bags. None. Not even the two massive ones you have just hauled onto the weighy belt thing.

Do not pay to park at Gatwick’s ‘Purple Parking’ if you live in Forest Row. It’s roughly the same distance from the departure hall as Forest Row is.

3)

If you are in a new relationship you may have a different surname to your children. Your children will have a different surname to your partner. He may have a different surname to his own children. You will have a different surname to him.

You will now have to fill in a proper paper form with a real pen and pay £60.

5)

This can be confusing to check-in people before 7am.

4)

When you have the peace and quiet to focus – at the point of booking the seven return flights - no matter what unearthly time that may be, just take a moment to read the actual information rather than totally high-fiving yourself over the price. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

There is a reason why the price box on the timetable says £34.99 for a ticket to a sub24

When reaching security, people generally don’t mind if you are desperate and you say you are going to miss your flight and you lift up the tape and queue jump ahead of them. Unless there’s 7 of you. Then they get a bit angry. Especially when you drop your glass bottle of Rescue Remedy and it smashes right next to their Italian suede loafers. “Oh God, you’ve dropped your Rescue Remedy!” And they are taking the 120ml of Mac foundation that costs £26 away from you. And your partner has only seen you, thus far, in darkness without it.

6)

No matter how busy you are with your actual normal life in the evening before the holiday flights, do not succumb to the temptation to allow your children to pack their own hand luggage. You may find that your son has packed his small collection of antique brass bullets in your handbag. The scanning people don’t like this.

7)

They also dislike the image of 5 glue-sticks in a row tucked into a small bag. Apparently they look like Semtex. My daughter thought we all might like to do some cutting and sticking. You will have to wait to talk to the floor manager. She doesn’t like light-hearted jokes loosely based on how you’re not actually a terrorist.

8) 9)

Remind your son that although his own family love him unconditionally, other people find it hard to listen to requests to go go-karting more than once every ten minutes.

while their siblings scream and/or laugh at them. Dealing with this will make you even later.

11)

Throughout the flight remind your son that although his own family love him unconditionally, other people find it hard to listen to requests to go go-karting more than once every ten minutes.

12) 13)

Definitely pre-book a hire car if you need a 7-seater.

14)

If your daughter says she feels sick, don’t ignore her.

Remember that Google maps on your phone won’t necessarily tell you all you need to know about the one way systems in Playa Del Carmen. You may find that an image of your route would not be too dissimilar to the looping pattern made by the broken slinky you tried to untangle last week.

Also, when booking a cheap flight be aware that the cheap flights often depart from a gate with a number so high that your youngest child may only ever have seen it written down when she found out what age Albus Dumbledore was. This gate is situated through all the exciting, distracting, shiny shops and then over a bridge which seems only to have the Great Wall of China as a rival in length. You must be good at running and have no pelvic floor weakness.

10)

There will be those flat escalators available to mechanically propel you towards the far off end of the sky bridge, but please note that children running with loose shoe laces (as there was previously no time available to do them up) may find themselves being dragged by one leg into the thin black rubbery slit of the machinery

26

15)

Other children will refuse to sit on the seat which has been vomited on. Even if you had the wet wipes to deal with it. The refusals will last the full week.

16)

Remind your son that although his own family love him unconditionally, even they are finding it hard to listen to requests to go go-karting more than once every ten minutes.

17)

No matter how brilliant your 2-bed apartment is upon arrival, you may find some creative solutions need to be employed to ensure happiness and fairness among the 5 children. These solutions may result in you sharing a single mattress on the lounge floor with your partner.

18) COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Always check the proximity of A&E services when making that recommended trip to the isolated beach where no one else goes because it’s 3.5km down an unmade track. When your 15-year-old bites straight through her own face in a body-surfing accident exactly 3 minutes after you have sat down for the first time on the beach, you may want to get back

Living

living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk

Home into the vehicle and proceed calmly there. Make sure you are firm about who is in the vomit seat this time.

19)

Perhaps discuss what your joint ‘new family’ emergency strategies might look like before you need to put them into play. Finding out that one of you needs super quiet and calm while the other needs to whizz around taking immediate action isn’t always conducive to the most harmonious results in a car full of sandy wet children in an unknown location.

20)

Remind your son that although his own family love him unconditionally, they will now kill him if they have to listen to a request to go go-karting.

But most important of all, enjoy your relaxing break away from it all! For more fun musings go to www.halfwavinghalfdrowning.com

Where have all the offices gone, long time passing? Gone to flats, every one For years East Grinstead has had numerous office blocks standing empty or part occupied but with the Government’s recent initiative on Permitted Development, which bypasses normal planning regulations, all that has changed. Landlords are now rushing to convert offices into more lucrative flats, particularly one and two bedroom properties. In many ways this is excellent news as it generates much needed affordable accommodation in the town. However like many well intentioned Government initiatives there is an unforeseen, unwelcome downside. Flats are more lucrative to landlords than offices so now even well occupied office blocks are being stripped of business tenants so that they can be converted. The result is that here in East Grinstead there is very little medium to large sized office space available and the rents for what is left are set to soar by about 30%. Businesses are now

being forced to relocate out of town which means more commuting for residents and less footfall in town during the day. The balance between commercial and residential has been artificially skewed which is of great concern to the business community of East Grinstead. Retailers are likely to be the most affected as staff from offices generally shop where they work - East Grinstead residents who commute will tend to shop at lunch time or early evening where they work. An interesting side effect of this change is that it raises more revenue for Mid Sussex District Council as flats pay Council Tax which they receive while offices are charged Business Rates, the vast majority of which goes to Central Government. How will they spend this windfall? In many ways it is great to have more people living in the heart of our town but like in most things it is the balance that counts. Stuart Scholes, Chairman East Grinstead Business Association

Our very own East Grinstead Champion on a GRC RR Italian Race Mini Moto, down at the Angmering raceway, every single weekend for over 1 year, after which we entered Jamie into the British championship (FAB Racing). This series covers the whole of the UK. It is also the series where the likes of Scott Redding, Danny Kent and Danny Webb started, and all 3 of these riders are at the prestigious level of Moto GP.

Local East Grinstead boy and Felbridge Primary School pupil Jamie Davis has conquered the world of motorbike racing for his age in the UK and is now one of the favourites in the Spanish Junior Moto4 Championship. His dedicated parents Tom & Katrina have assisted him every step of the way from the tender age of 3. We’re pleased to be able to bring you a Q&A with Jamie’s dad Tom about his relentless ascent in the motorbike racing world:

In fact, Danny Webb is a personal friend of mine and has been Jamie’s coach since he was 6 years old.

How did Jamie get into motorcycling racing initially? Jamie started out racing karts at 3 years old at the Rye House junior training centre which is near Stanstead Airport; we used to have to take him every Sunday morning and be there for 7.30am. After about 6/7 months he was already showing clear talent but unfortunately there were other parents who made it quite

obvious that they didn’t like a 3-year-old doing well up against their 7-year-olds. So we had to take the decision to stop karting. How did he progress from there? We then took the alternative approach of 2 wheels training

At the age of 8 Jamie became British champion, the youngest to date. Then at 9 years old Jamie became 3 times the British champion on the Mini Moto, Junior Production and Metrakit 50cc Gear Box all in the same year, so you can imagine how busy we were going around the country to each race meeting! At the age of 10 Jamie was selected to race in the more challenging Junior Spanish Championship, RFME CEV series. This level is incredible and very competitive, with all the best kids from all over the world. He is now racing in Spain. What’s the set-up out there and costs/time involved for you? Currently, now at age 11, he’s been selected to race for Hector Faubel’s team (FAU55). Hector raced at Moto GP for many years but retired to set up his team. Jamie is 3rd in the championship Living

August Reminders for your Garden keep them looking fresh. If you have lavender, santolina or rosemary then you should clip these back once they’ve finished flowering. This keeps new growth at the bottom of the plant and prevents the woody appearance which can deter from the natural shape and beauty of the shrub. If you dry the lavender you can use it indoors for scent. Thuja, leylandii, beech and hornbeam can all be trimmed this month – if you use a power hedge trimmer, spare a thought for the neighbour’s barbeque! A great month for harvesting your fruit and vegetables. You can also prune your gooseberries, redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes once the fruit has finished. Tasty salads and delicious desserts are your reward for all your hard efforts - so most importantly this month, when there is fine weather make sure you sit and enjoy your garden.

I’m writing this article in the early evening on what has been the hottest day of the year so far. Sitting in the garden with a glass of chilled prosecco and a dish of olives admiring the garden – only the second time this year I’ve sat out early evening, not because I’ve been too busy but it’s either been very windy, pouring with rain or just dull! Interestingly though, the plants seem to have enjoyed the weather, growing prolifically with the wet, warm conditions and now a real burst of colour - thanks I’m sure to my regular feeding regime.

Bon appétit… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursery

For a lot of gardeners the problem this year has been slugs, perfect conditions for them. Dealing with them is not always easy. If you want to be organic then nematodes applied regularly is the answer, but you must start early season. Alternatively wool pellets can be very effective, forming a sticky mat around the plant. Both good options if you have pets or young children. As always there are jobs to do in August. Keep deadheading, watering and feeding for long lasting displays of flowers. Continue to weed the borders to
