“Mr Nash carried out a series of works projects that included roof tile and guttering replacement; application of hanging tiles to the rear of the property and groundworks/erection of a shed and patio area in the rear garden. “The works were finished to schedule, for reasonable fees and to a good standard. I was very pleased with the results. Throughout the contract, Mr. Nash and his colleagues behaved with care and consideration for both myself and my neighbours and were extremely professional in their conduct. “As a shareholder and director of a business for 10 years that was highly customer focused, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Nash for future projects. I found him to be organised, methodical and communicative about the progress of works with both the client and his staff and he managed the projects in a most professional manner, to budget and to time.” — Dr. C Scott

William Robinson of Gravetye: The Master Gardener Gravetye’s most notable owner, William Robinson, is one of the greatest gardeners of all time, he revolutionised the very concept of the English Garden. Robinson railed against the prevalent style of the day: the high Victorian formal patterned garden with planted out schemes, based loosely on the Italian “classical” garden style. He championed the “wild garden” which lead to an enhanced concept of the English cottage garden (known and loved today), and was an early practitioner of the mixed herbaceous border of hardy perennials - which he pretty much invented. This in turn contributed greatly to a movement in gardening which paralleled the Arts and Crafts movement of the latter Victorian years, the mantra of which was a search for “honest simplicity and vernacular style”, stepping away from excessively ornate, artificial-style objects and ornaments. Robinson bought Gravetye Manor and the one thousand acres in which it stands in 1884. It was to be his home until he died, well into his nineties in 1935. It was at COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Gravetye that he realised many of his pioneering ideas

and seeds from a bag on his lap. The garden room he built at the end of the formal garden provided him with a shelter from which he could watch his beloved flowers and trees from a fresh viewpoint.

As a young man he had worked in many formal gardens in England and France but in his planning, planting and landscaping he always yearned to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens and woods. The variety and charm of the arrangements and layouts of different types of garden at Gravetye remain his creation and are today viewed as a memorial to the great man.

His story began as a young boy of humble beginnings: William was born in Ireland in 1838. His aunt, Sarah Handfield Robinson, wife of his uncle Joseph, encouraged her young nephew to become a gardener. He started work for the Marquess of Waterford at Curraghmore as a garden boy and later was the foreman at Ballykilcannan, the estate of Irish baronet, Sir Hunt Johnson-Walsh. While there, aged 21, he was put in charge of a large number of greenhouses. According to

WILLIAM ROBINSON OF GRAVETYE: THE MASTER GARDENER CONTINUED

one account, as the result of a bitter quarrel, one cold winter night in 1861 he let the fires go out, killing many valuable plants. Other accounts consider the story to be a gross exaggeration. Whatever the case, Robinson soon left for Dublin in 1861, where with the influence of David Moore, head of the botanical garden at Glasnevin (a family friend), work was found for him at the Botanical Gardens of Regent’s Park, London, where he was given responsibility for the hardy herbaceous plants, specialising in British wildflowers. At that very moment in time, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Kensington gardens were being designed and planted with vast numbers of greenhouse flowers in mass plantings. Robinson wrote that, “it was not easy to get away from all this false and hideous ‘art’”. But his work with native British plants did allow him to get away to the countryside, where he “began to get an idea (which should be taught to every boy at school) that there was (for gardens even) much beauty in our native flowers and trees.” After working hard at Regents Park to educate himself he left to become The Times horticultural correspondent in 1867. He founded eight COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY gardening periodicals and wrote nineteen books.

And by 1885 he had saved enough to buy the Gravetye estate. Robinson was living at Philpot’s Manor when he first saw Gravetye and stated: “this is the place I mean to live in”. Initially he lived at The Moat, a nearby 16th century cottage, for the first four years. During this time he refurbished it, while both renovating and extending the main manor house. For the following 50 years he developed the gardens and woods in line with his life’s mission: to direct English gardens to naturalness. He advocated dense plantings that left no bare soil, with the spaces between taller plants filled with what are now commonly called ground cover plants. Even the rose garden at Gravetye was filled with saxifrage between and under the roses. Distinguished visitors came from all over the world to see Robinson’s Gravetye. One of his great friends and fellow gardening pioneer Gertrude Jekyll was a frequent visitor. They had first met in 1875 and discovered their design principles were in full accord. Their professional association lasted for over 50 years. He helped her on her garden at Munstead Wood; and she in turn provided plants for his garden at Gravetye Manor. Jekyll wrote about Robinson that: “...when English gardening

was mostly represented by the innate futilities of the ‘bedding’ system, with its wearisome repetitions and garish colouring, Mr William Robinson chose as his work in live to make better known the treasures that were lying neglected, and at the same time to overthrow the feeble follies of the ‘bedding’ system. It is mainly owing to his unremitting labours that a clear knowledge of the world of hardy-plant beauty is now placed within easy reach of all who care to acquire it, and that the ‘bedding mania’ is virtually dead.” He employed many staff including head gardener Austin Adam Stratford who was at Gravetye from 1897 to 1901 and Ernest Markham who held this post from 1910 until he died aged fifty seven in 1937. In 1909, Robinson fell from a stile on his way to church in West Hoathly and injured his back. He never recovered and was wheelchair bound from then on. He persuaded his temporary nurse, Mary Gilpin, to stay permanently. She and many others helped to re-establish his mobility. Clem Rothwell worked at Gravetye as a house boy and recalls pushing his boss around in his wheelchair. Mary Gilpin’s niece, Iris, came to live with her at Gravetye Continues over the page. WILLIAM ROBINSON OF GRAVETYE: THE MASTER GARDENER CONTINUED

when Iris’s mother became unable to care for her five children and her husband (who was gassed in WW1). Iris became William’s frequent companion and later, Robinson built a house for Mary Gilpin in Vowels Lane, now called Holms Cottage. On his ninetieth birthday Mary Gilpin arranged for some West Hoathly school children to go to a party at Gravetye and to sing to William and receive a commemorative mug and plate. This continued each year until his death and he bequeathed £250 in his will to ensure that the annual party would continue indefinitely. It still continues to this day.

William Robinson’s memorial placed at Golders Green Crematorium when he died in 1935. He was an early advocate of cremation and was cremated here after a service at Saint Margaret’s church in West Hoathly. He had designed the crematorium gardens in 1901, as acknowledged on this memorial.

Progeny has called him one of the greatest gardeners of all time, we couldn’t agree more.

LOCAL NEWS STORIES

Children at Happy Cats Childminding run by Steve and Helen Pond and based in Lingfield Road, look after part of the Windmill Lane Community Garden. This Spring/Summer children have been growing plants, salad and vegetables in their section. This year so far they have harvested (and also planted more for late Summer) lettuce, radishes, new potatoes, carrots, strawberries, and various herbs, with tomatoes, runner beans, and cauliflower still to come. Harvested produce is taken home by the children or given away to members of the local community. They also had some very special visitors last month, as you can see from the photos. How fantastic for children to learn to grow their own so young.

Forever-a-Foraging John Wright is a well-known forager from his appearances with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on Channel 4's series 'River Cottage'. John also authored four River Cottage Handbooks, No. 1. Mushrooms, No. 5. Edible Seashore, No. 7. Hedgerow, and No. 12, unashamedly called “Booze“ (which indulges his passion for home brewing). John runs seashore and mushroom forays across the south and will be holding one in October in the Ashdown Forest area. Here we have a Q&A with the man himself:

What is the most challenging part about foraging? Nothing, really. It is our natural mode of existence and we take to it quickly. Of course we would have once learned what was edible and what was not from tribal members, but that is not really possible any more. What we do have is books and people who teach. It takes a little time, practice and study, but it is not difficult to identify most species.

How can foraging change someone's day to day living? I certainly do not forage every day or eat only foraged food. But my store cupboard is packed with foraged ingredients which will form part of most meals I prepare at home.

The more profound change, more profound that finding free and unusual foods, is in encouraging peoples' love and understanding of the natural world. Foragers look at the world more closely.

What is your best gem of advice for mushroom foragers new to the game? I suggest learning ten easy species of fungi many of which we have found at Moon Down! And the ten most dangerous species - some of which occur at Moon Down.

What is the your favourite foragable item in this area? It is a heavily wooded area and many of the trees support the mycorrhizal (growing in symbiosis with tree roots) fungi such as the superb Ceps, Chanterelles, Horn of Plenty and more. However my favourite wild mushroom of woodland is the Wood Blewit. This too grows in the area but with a different life style - that of living off of fallen leaves. Magnificent with garlic and cream.

Good luck to any new foragers! COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Orange and Sultana White Pudding There’s no need to add sugar to this easy pudding – it's sweet enough with the sultanas. Prep time: 10 mins • Cooking time : 5 mins • Effort : Super easy • Serves : 4

METHOD 1.

Finely grate 1 tsp of zest from 1 of the oranges, then squeeze the juice from the orange. Slice the second orange into segments, removing all the peel and pith.

2.

Put the milk, ground rice, orange zest and mixed spice into a non-stick saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until thickened. Add the orange juice and most of the sultanas or raisins, then cook over a very low heat for 1-2 minutes, stirring all the time. Try using ground nutmeg instead of mixed spice.

INGREDIENTS • 2 oranges

3.

Share the pudding between 4 bowls and top with the orange segments and remaining sultanas. Serve at once.

• 600ml semi-skimmed milk • 80g ground rice • 1/4 tsp ground mixed spice

This makes a delicious breakfast dish instead of porridge.

• 60g sultanas or raisins

Dear Sarah... Welcome to our new 'Dear Sarah' page. Introducing Sarah Jackson, trained mid-wife and mother of four and now our advice-giver extraordinaire.

Who needs 'experts' when you can get

Dear Sarah My son has always had a close-knit circle of friends, they are now all young teenagers of 14/15 and some of them have taken to smoking weed. Our son says he doesn't hang about with them when they're smoking and we believe him, we have always tried not to interfere with his friendship circles and we want him to come to his own understanding about people. We feel if we interfere too much, he may 'go the other way' in frustration and go all-out rebellious, as he has had these friends for so long, and besides we don't want to force a friendshipbreakup. However at the same time we are not comfortable to have this possible bad influence hanging over our son, especially at such a young age. My husband smoked lots of weed in his early teens and it really took it's toll and is a big regret... we don't want our son to go the same way. What should we do? - Mrs. B

perienced mum!

the best advice from a local, highly-ex

This is such a tricky issue to parent as it’s often quite difficult to get the balance right between being too heavy handed and asking him to cut all ties with his friends and not doing enough to safeguard him from possible temptation and peer pressure. It sounds as if you have quite an honest, open relationship with your son if he feels he has been able to talk to you about what his friends are up to so keep that up. For some, telling our children to stay away from friends who are doing things that we disapprove of doesn’t always work and, as you rightly say, could instil a sense of rebellion and lead to him making poor decisions. It is important that your son understands how you feel about him hanging around with friends who are smoking pot. Could a candid conversation about how weed affected your husband be a possibility? Help him understand what the very real consequences of pot smoking can be, especially on adolescent boys. Also make him aware that, whilst it may appear to be a bit of harmless fun, cannabis can be a gateway drug to harder substances which can have devastating effects. Of course, you don’t want to frightened him but knowledge is power. I think if you feel you have a trustworthy relationship with your son and you feel that he really wants these friendships to continue, try to instil a sense of courage in him when he is with his friends. Make sure he understands that continuing to say no in the face of peer pressure is a good and brave thing to do. Often, in a group of peers, they’ll be another kid in the mix who perhaps doesn’t want to be smoking pot but doesn’t have the courage to say no. Help your son see that he could be helping someone else by saying no. Remind him that you are trusting him to make good choices and that if that trust is broken then there will be consequences to that. It is so hard for children who face these temptations on a daily basis now but I strongly believe that open communication about how you feel and what you expect from him are a really good start. Good luck.

DEAR SARAH CONTINUED

Dear Sarah, My best friend has recently been going through a very hard time with one of her children. She's stopped answering calls or replying to texts. At first our little friendship group was very understanding but now it's got the point where we are very concerned about her wellbeing as she's cut herself off from all socialising and almost all but essential communication. Should I go round to face her and find out what is happening in a non-confrontational manner or just let her go on without prying and leave her to it to get through it as she feels fit. It's been going on for so long now that it will soon become a way of life for her. Ms H.

Sometimes, when we need help the most, we are reluctant to ask for it and can withdraw, as your friend has done. No doubt she thinks that she doesn’t want to burden her friends with her problems and will just deal with it herself. I would definitely go around and see her. Whether you want to try to invite her to yours for a coffee and a chat or just turn up at hers in the afternoon/evening with a bottle of wine and a shoulder is best left to you but you need to let her know that you are there for her. You mention that she is part of a wider group of friends but perhaps, initially, this is something that you could try to help her with alone. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to have lots of people asking you to share your problems and a one to one might be all she can handle at the moment. She may not open up to you straight away and seem reluctant to engage. Please don’t take this personally. You obviously care about her so just keep letting her know that. Remind her that, whenever she is ready, you are there to listen.

Dear Sarah, I find that after an argument, my husband can remain in a sulk for a good couple of days once it even stretched to four... I try to be tolerant and let it run its course as he's not interested in talking much... but honestly, how long is too long? - Mrs A Have you ever tried to ask him why he likes to dwell on the argument aftermath for so long? Is there a possibility that somehow he is trying to make you feel responsible for the disagreement and make you feel bad? Perhaps discuss with him what he hopes to achieve by sulking? How do you respond to his sulking? If you have children, perhaps, in a calmer moment, you could ask him how he thinks this behaviour might reflect on your children and what it is teaching them about conflict resolution. Good communication is key to successful relationships and if he was perhaps able to communicate to you why he reacts this way after a disagreement that you may, together, gain an understanding and see what you both might be able to do to try and change this habit in a positive way. It’s probably not a good idea to try to get these answers or look deeper into it whilst in the heat of the moment but when you’re both in a good place, bring the subject up and explore it a little. And just for the record, four days is definitely too long! Failing all of that, give him a 24 hour sulkfest limit and then tell him his time is up! Good luck.
