Lazy-Summer Recipes Anyone want to take it super easy this August? We thought so. These recipes are so simple you might want to get the kids involved too.

Choc Cherry Popcorn Cakes METHOD

INGREDIENTS

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, gas mark 4. Put 14 paper bun cases into bun trays.

• 2 tsp vegetable oil • 100g popping corn • 2 egg whites • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder • 65g dried cherries, chopped You could use sultanas or dried apricots instead of cherries. Or a combination of all.

2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large heavy-based saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Add the popping corn, put the lid on and shake the pan to coat the kernels in the oil. Put the pan over a medium-high heat. The kernels will begin to pop, and when they do, carefully shake the pan occasionally. 3. A few popcorn kernels might not pop – just remove them. 4. When the popping subsides, remove from the heat. Cool for 5 minutes. 5. Whisk the egg whites and cocoa powder together in a large bowl. Stir in the cooled popcorn and dried cherries. Share the mixture between the bun cases, then bake for 8-10 minutes until set. Cool.

Creamy Hummus Dip Serves 1, just multiply to serve extra.

INGREDIENTS • 2 heaped tbsp tinned chickpeas • Juice of ½ lemon • 1 tbsp Greek style yoghurt

METHOD

• 1 tbsp olive oil

1. Put the chickpeas, lemon juice, yoghurt, oil, spices and garlic in a bowl.

• ¼ tsp paprika (or to taste)

2. Using a hand blender, mix together until smooth.

• ¼ tsp cumin (or to taste)

3. Serve with the pitta bread strips and carrot and celery sticks or anything that takes your fancy.

Celebrating 50 years of Help

East Grinstead & District Lions Club has been serving the local community for 50 years. In that time the club has raised and donated well over ÂŁ1 million to local good causes including organisations, clubs, schools and individuals.

Over the years the club has staged many types of fundraisers. In the early days, a week-long carnival was replaced by a one-day event in the 1970s. The annual May Fair was introduced in 1979. It gives the opportunity for not only the lions to raise money but also other local charities who are joined by commercial stalls, small rides and live entertainment, bringing local residents together for a day of fun in the historic High Street. Lions have helped Santa make an annual visit to the town for almost all of its 50 years. The original trolley dash and more recent Christmas COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HELP

raffle have funded the popular senior citizens party for over 45 years. The 1980’s saw the beginnings of the book stall, originally set up to fund holidays at the lion’s caravan. Although no longer in the town centre, book stalls are now firmly established in local train stations.

The club supports EG’s own 10k run, the schools’ cross country and the town council’s “music in the park” events by providing refreshments with those mouth watering homemade cakes and biscuits for which the lions are famous.

There have been fashion shows, raffles, stalls at school fetes and even a sponsored 24 hour knitting event. The annual sponsored swim celebrates its 30th year in 2019.

The list of those helped is a long and varied one. The club supports both young and old people. It has supported the Tadpoles for over 30 years by funding additional equipment. Lions have funded 3 defibrillators for First Responders with a further 3 placed at strategic points around the town. Local ambulances

In 2013 the club re-introduced the donkey derby to the town after a long absence. This traditional day of fun has quickly become a COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY favourite with local families.

In recognition of 50 years of local support, the town council has dedicated one of the High Street flower beds to the club. The blue and yellow flowers used there and in the hanging baskets around the town represent the club’s colours. All club members are volunteers who give their time freely. No deductions are made from any of the funds raised, with running costs paid by members. Approximately 95% of funds raised locally are donated locally, with 5% used to help national and international crises.

CHEMICAL FREE CLEANING Cleaning the Dishwasher It’s advisable to clean your dishwasher every six months or so. Run a cycle with one cup of vinegar in a bowl on the top rack. Then sprinkle a bit of bicarb of soda on the bottom of the washer and run it again - can both be run on short cycles. The vinegar and bicarb of soda chemically combine to help to clean out any food particles and leave it smelling fresh and clean. Oven Cleaning Mix these ingredients together to form a thick, spreadable paste: bicarb soda, salt (preferably coarse), washing up liquid, and a sponge. The paste should be thick. Spread over the oven and leave for a few hours. Then clean off with a sponge and lots of water. Cleaning Grout Mix 1-2 tsp cream of tartar with lemon juice, apply with a toothbrush, and rinse. BILLY MONGER DRINKS CHAMPAGNE FROM ARTIFICIAL LEG DURING SPA PODIUM Congratulations to the incredible Billy Monger (nicknamed Billy Whizz) from Charlwood (near Gatwick). Double amputee Billy celebrated finishing third in last month’s British Formula 3 race at the Spa Francorchamps circuit by drinking champagne from his prosthetic leg during the podium ceremony. Billy said the “leggy” was inspired by F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, who has a tradition of drinking champagne from a racing boot in a move called the “shoey”. Billy’s return to racing after losing his legs in an horrendous accident last April is nothing short of miraculous, making a podium finish even more incredulous. Only 30,000 were printed in the first run. It is understood the purchase was made from rare book seller Peter Harrington in Kensington, London. A Market for a Market Town East Grinstead is one of the oldest market towns in the country, with its charter being granted way back in historic, olde-times… to be specific: 1247. So it’s only fitting we still have the luxury of being able to buy something a bit different and (as they’re mainly food stalls) a lot tasty and better still fresh. There is also something lovely about shopping at a market, out in the open air buying guaranteed ‘real’ food, away from queues. East Grinstead Farmers’ Market is held every Thursday on the Market Square in our beautiful historic High Street from 9am ‘til 2pm. The town council initially took over the running of the market in 2011, when there were five regular stalls; eventually due to a lack of footfall, this number fell to only two stalls remaining. This remained the case for approximately 18 bleak months. However, as the footfall has slowly started

to increase, so has interest in the market leading to a resultant increase in size. Here are the current stallholders: • Chris Veasey & Sons – fishmonger. • Lovetts Nursery – plants & flowers. • Sussex Biltong – biltong, olives, bread etc. • Hello Naturalle – honey, oils etc. • Nose2Tail Butchers – assorted meats, plus cooked burgers. "Customers are key to our continuation," said Jonathan

Hopefully, if you haven’t been already, you can take a little moment during a Thursday in the not too distant future, to sample some of the delights of the market.

Congratulations to East Grinstead's Tom Mitchell, Captain of the England Rugby 7s England Rugby 7s team finished second in the Rugby 7s World Championship in San Francisco last month. England reached their third World Cup Sevens final but New Zealand proved too strong in San Francisco, as they ran out 33-12 winners.

Congratulations to local resident Krys O'Brien on her appointment as a BBC Surrey & Sussex Reporter!

29 year old Tom, who was brought up in East Grinstead, said: "I think a lot of people wrote us off coming into this and didn't even give us a shout. The boys have fought and scrapped, not just this weekend, but the last few months and all the way through this season which

Bush Davies School Commemorative Statue Last month, Charters Village, former site of East Grinstead’s famous Bush Davies School of theatre arts, unveiled a statue which has been commissioned to celebrate the history of the former school site, created by sculptor Steve Jolley, who famously worked within the props department at the Royal Opera House. Three ex-pupils of the renowned school paid an emotional visit to their old haunt, to unveil the beautiful statue. The old school, that established an enviable national reputation for dance, closed back in 1989 and has since been converted into Charters Village – a retirement development exclusively for the over 65s. One of the school friends who attended was Myra Tiffan from Milton Keynes. Myra was head girl at the Bush Davies School from 1973 to 1975 and went on to start up her own successful dance school in 1978:

Forest Row’s

HARRY THURSTON WINS BAFTA 10-year-old Harry Thurston from Forest Row won a Bafta in the ‘Game Making Award’ (10 to 14 year old category) for his computer game Maggie. He is this year’s youngest winner in Bafta’s Young Game Designers competition. Maggie is a minimalist puzzle in which you guide Maggie, a cute red cube, through a series of levels using only her ability to stretch. The player explores Maggie's world by growing and shrinking. The ten levels in the demo are easy to start with but get more and more challenging as Maggie moves through them. Maggie is Harry’s first program using Unity. After receiving the prestigious award at Bafta’s home in London’s West End last month, we asked Harry: What was the basic idea behind your game? ‘I like puzzle games and wanted to create one myself but I wanted to think up a different idea. So, I came up with the idea that instead of moving normally, Maggie could only shrink or grow. Then all I had to do was come up with level designs. Along the way we added different features, like switches and gravity blocks’.

What was your reaction to winning a Bafta? ‘I was really thrilled and excited, especially when I walked up on to the stage to receive the award. I hope this is the start of something big!’ And as part of his prize Bafta will provide Harry with a bespoke mentoring package to support him in his future game making. He will also receive other benefits including studio tours, and perhaps most importantly free games.

What made you decide to develop a computer game? ‘I love programming in my spare time and at school. Then two years ago my brother Charlie won the Bafta YGD, which inspired me to have a go myself’.

In a written message to attendees, Bafta’s President HRH the Duke of Cambridge said: “The variety of themes that have been tackled – and with such ingenuity and creativity - shows just how versatile games can be in representing who we are and what we believe in.”

What has the response been so far, from users of the game? ‘My friends and teachers at school were all really impressed with the game and some of them are even queuing up to play it at break COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY time! I think people find it a fun puzzling challenge’.

Congratulations Harry!

THE PRIEST HOUSE

In the year 1392 Pope Urban VI gave the Cluniac Priory of St. Pancras in Lewes permission to appropriate land in the parishes of West Hoathly, Patcham, Ditchling & Wivelsfield to compensate the priory for revenue lost during raids on the Sussex coast by French & Spanish marauders. The manor of the rectory of West Hoathly was created from land that had previously formed part of the manor of Lindfield. However, the manor lands were sadly neglected & in 1426 the parishioners petitioned Pope Martin COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY V about the priory’s management. living

It was possibly as a response to this that the Priest House was built, as an estate office, in the late 1420’s. Then in 1524 the priory leased the rectory manor to John Browne, a “husbandman” of the parish, thus the Priest House became a family home. In the nascent days of the reformation, 1538 Henry VIII seized all the property of Lewes Priory and so the Browne’s Manor was given to Thomas Cromwell, the king’s new secretary & chief adviser. He was succeeded by his son, Thomas. After the death of Anne of Cleves the property reverted back to the crown and rent was paid to Queen Mary for a year & then to Elizabeth I. In 1560 the queen sold all the property that had once belonged to Lewes Priory, (supposedly to pay her dressmaker’s bills!), to two London land speculators, Nicholas Pynde and Thomas Reeve. THE PRIEST HOUSE CONTINUED

John’s son, Thomas who then set about modernising it. The house was originally an open hall, with a living room & upper chamber on the north end & a service end with a buttery, pantry & solar to the south. The roof was probably thatched. However, Thomas had begun to mine iron ore on his land for the foundries working around West Hoathly. He now styled himself “yeoman” & needed a house to match his new status. The ground floor level was lowered to accommodate the massive stone chimney that replaced the medieval open hearth. The chimney

enabled two new rooms to be created upstairs, each with their own fireplace. A new front doorway had to be created to match the new floor level, replacing the impressive, but rather impractical, medieval arched door. The thatched roof was replaced with Horsham stone but the new tiles were so heavy that the roof timbers had to be reinforced to take the weight. The hard work paid off as by the end of the 16th century the Priest House was probably the finest building in the village & Thomas Browne could call himself “squire”.

The house remained in the hands of the Browne family for another hundred years but their fortunes were in decline & in 1695 the house & manor lands had to be sold to pay off their debts. The new owner was Mrs. Anna Hooper of Barbados. She never visited West Hoathly & took little interest in her property. The house was split into two cottages & rented to George Payne & Samuel Parks. In 1731 the land was sold to Robert Bostock of Otford, Kent. The Bostock family held the land for 150 years but did little to maintain the Priest House itself, which was lived in by the carter & cowman

Using photographs & documents from the West Hoathly Local History Archive, the West Hoathly branch of the British Legion & the men’s families the exhibition also aims to bring together the sometimes conflicting information on the men who served from the memorials, records and rolls of honour around the parish to create a definitive record and a permanent resource for future generations of a remarkable generation who saw horrors they would never forget and the end of a way of life, the end of an era. The exhibition runs until the end of October. The house & garden are open from 10 to 5:30pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays & 12pm to COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY 5:30pm on Sundays. The Priest House, North Lane, West Hoathly, West Sussex, RH19 4PP. Tel: 01342 810479. www.sussexpast.co.uk.

Musical Talent on our Doorstep East Grinstead is blessed with many talented musicians and a wide range of activities through which they can follow their performing star and develop their skills. One such star is former Imberhorne student George Clifford, born and raised in the town who is making a name for himself as a specialist in baroque violin playing. Playing in internationally recognised ensembles, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra and a host of others, he recently recorded a solo disc and is in great demand for his specialist skills.

Both Simon Austin and Nick Nye are long-established East Grinstead artists, Simon a composer and Nick a poet and librettist. Their collaborations go back over 26 years and together they have written six major choral works and a host of smaller, bespoke pieces. The subjects of these secular cantatas range from the story of the Balkans war, St Augustine’s arrival in Britain, the new millennium to more recently a fine set of 9 poems about Sussex, Sussex Born, set to music by Simon for the choir, the Sussex Cantorum, he and his wife, Penny, established in 1992. The group has performed in many local venues including St Swithun’s and Worth Abbey and most frequently St Barnabas College, Dormansland, where, for over 22 years, they gave the Advent Carol Service. In October, Crowborough Choral Society will perform This Human Shield as part of their Armistice week, which uses First World War songs as a framework for setting

Nick’s poem about child soldiers. The choir has re-named itself Sussex Occasional Singers and, with an array of other local talent on show, present their third Autumn Colours concert in All Saints, Highbrook on Saturday, September 22nd at 7:30pm. George’s wonderful baroque violin playing will feature, when he leads Autumnal Strings in accompanying the choir in Gabrieli’s Jubilate Deo, Purcell’s Jehovah and Handel’s The King shall rejoice and who will make their own solo and ensemble contributions. Sussex Occasional Singers give their first performance of Simon’s Night Music, written to a text by Nick with Brahms’ lovely A Cappella motet, O Heiland reiss. A very varied and exciting evening of music making. SOS supports St Catherine’s Hospice and tickets, £10, are available from choir members and Bullfrog Music 01342 315602 and on the door. Your LOCAL Choice at the Best Prices! Last month East Grinstead’s The Bookshop once again showed how generous its staff and customers are, with the latest donation of books to the patients of the Queen Vic. Part of their ‘buy a book for a stranger’ campaign, customers were encouraged to buy a book and gift a book at the same time. As you can see there was a lovely array of adult books for c-wing and children’s books for the Peanut ward. Each lovingly wrapped in brown paper with just a few clues on the front as to what it might be!
