THE CHRISTMAS CARD

Maketh Christmas We take a look at the beginnings of the Christmas card and how it came to be our national obsession: The first recorded Christmas cards were sent by Michael Maier to James I of England and his son Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales way back in 1611, it was discovered in 1979 in the Scottish Record Office. The card read, "A greeting on the birthday of the Sacred King, to the most worshipful and energetic lord and most eminent James, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and Defender of the true faith, with a gesture of joyful celebration of the Birthday of the Lord, in most joy and fortune, we enter into the new auspicious year 1612" – being laid out to form

COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

The first Christmas card was designed in 1843 by John Callcott Horsley for Sir Henry Cole [Wikimedia Commons] a rose. This would have been a significant, grand gesture and not the Christmas cards that we popularly think of today. The birth of the modern Christmas card sending tradition as we know it can be credited to Sir Henry Cole with illustration done by John Callcott Horsley in London on 1st May 1843. As you can see in the image, the central picture showed three generations of one family raising a toast: on either side are scenes of charity, with food and clothing being given to the poor. Allegedly this image of the family drinking wine together proved controversial, probably due to certain people's reactionary throwback to Living

more puritanical Christmasses when celebration was all but banned or certainly frowned upon – Thank you Mr Oliver Cromwell! Cole had personally helped to introduce the Penny Post three years earlier before coming up with this clever new business idea: two batches were printed totalling 2050 cards and sold that year for a shilling each. Henry Cole could not have foreseen what his enterprising idea would eventually lead to and it’s still going strong two centuries later! Early British cards actually reminded the recipient of the approach of Spring, favouring fairies and flowers Continues over the page. Enquiries: 01342 300152

and other Spring related images. Humorous and sentimental images of children and animals were popular. In 1873, the American lithograph firm Prang and Mayer began creating greeting cards for the popular market in Britain (as there was not yet an established market in America). However, off the back of their success, the firm began selling their Christmas cards in America in 1874. Business owner, Louis Prang, became known as the "father of the American Christmas card." By the 1880s, Prang and his partners were producing over five million cards a year by using the chromolithography process of printmaking! However, the popularity of his cards led to cheaper imitations that eventually drove him from the market.

Throughout the 20th century, many stationery manufacturers found

Christmas cards a most profitable business. The design of cards continually evolved with changing tastes and printing techniques. The famous Hallmark Cards was established in 1913 by Joyce Hall and his brother Rollie Hall to market their selfproduced Christmas cards. Artistic, nostalgic, sentimental, humourous, religious and Christmassy themed images have continued in popularity, and, in the 21st century, reproductions of Victorian and Edwardian cards are easy to obtain and have become more popular. SKETCHING THE BEAUTY OF EAST GRINSTEAD CONTINUED

‘I work as an IT manager in Central London and try to sketch most lunch times. A lot of my work is based around Holborn and Kings Cross where I work. ‘Having recently moved to East Grinstead I’m determined to sketch a lot more in and around my fantastic new home town, so watch out for me when you are out and about! ‘Most of my work is done quickly with waterproof fountain pen ink or gel pens and watercolours. I try to carry a pen and sketchbook with me at all times for when the urge takes me. ‘I’ve always wanted to sketch but felt that I was terrible at it, so never tried it till around 5 years ago when my girlfriend (now wife!) convinced me that sketching, like any other

skill can be learned. From then I vowed to learn by making at least one sketch a day, no matter how big or small. My early sketches look really amateurish to me but I enjoy looking through them to see how far I’ve got. ‘I don’t paint for commercial reasons but I do get asked to do paid commissions. I’ve done everything from buildings, still-life work and even someone’s cat in Australia. ‘I always post my work on Instagram and Twitter unless they are commissions. You can look me and and contact me, even just for a chat’. Instagram: lefthandeddrawer, Twitter: RolandN.'

THE HOPE JOB CLUB If so, The Hope Job Club would love to hear from you and can be contacted on 01342 488282, contact@thehopejobclub.co.uk or full details are available via the ‘Community Expressions’ page of The Hope Church’s website www.rceg.church.

Was launched at the Jubilee Community Centre last month, by the Town Mayor, Cllr Rex Whittaker and the Club’s Director, Ade Awonaike. The Job Club’s services will focus on increasing confidence and ability by way of a series of online courses, ranging from very basic to advanced, applying for jobs, support with CV writing, preparing for interviews, etc. The club will be free, accessible to all, and will open at the Jubilee Community Centre in January. As the organisers are looking to further their links with local businesses: could you give someone who is committed to giving of their best some work experience? Or is your company able to help fund this much needed initiative? Do you have a heart for volunteering, for giving something back to your community? Would you consider becoming a jobseeker-buddy/mentor? Or are you looking for work and would appreciate some practical help and encouragement?

Lingfield Film Club: Flix in the Stix by founding member Paul Pirie community centre office or if closed from Robert Leech Estate Agents, High Street, Lingfield. The film this month is PADDINGTON 2, staring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins and the voice of Ben Wishaw, the regular cast is joined by a wonderful performance by Hugh Grant as the villain of the piece. At the Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre, Sunday 10th December, 3:30pm. Tickets £5. For more info: 01342 833893, enquiries@ lingfieldcentre.org, www.lingfieldcentre.org/ flix

This is our 7th Season and we are thrilled that on every second Sunday of the month we get a great crowd of local cinema-goers to our film choices. But there’s always room for more though. We offer quality films at affordable prices, right on your doorstep. For many of our movie-goers this is the only chance they get to see a film on the big screen with other people. For some, it’s the chance to see a film they have either missed when on general release or an opportunity to see a film they know very little about. Thankfully, we have become pretty good at mixing up our selections and 9/10 we hit the spot. Moviegoers are advised to arrive in good time as our home-made cakes are the talk of the neighbourhood!

Flix in the Stix has been supported by Coop and the BFI who have supplied funds and equipment for state of the screen and projection facilities.

For December, Lingfield Film club are offering free tickets to children with every full paying adult ticket purchased in advance from the

Stitching up

Merriment at Standen

some

Jamie has been inspiring hundreds of stitchers from the local community and further afield to work together to create Standen’s annual 20 foot designer Christmas tree.

One man, one tree and a community of stitchers have come together this Christmas to produce a contemporary art showstopper, bringing mirth and merriment to Standen. Jamie Chalmers, aka Mr X Stitch, the Kingpin of Contemporary Embroidery, is the designer of this year’s Christmas art installation ‘The Xmas Tree at Standen’. Jamie is one of the world’s most well-known male embroiderers, an internationally exhibited textile artist and curator. His recent exhibition at Standen, the Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch, showed how this humble craft is alive and kicking and not limited to COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY images of cute kittens and country cottages. living

“When we launched the Xmas XStitch Bauble project I didn’t know what the response would be, but it’s fair to say that I’m overwhelmed by it. To have received over 500 baubles from an international community of stitchers is truly humbling and I hope that the visitors to Standen will feel the stitchy love that’s been generated by all these wonderful people!”, said Jamie Chalmers. Jamie has been working with local community groups in East Grinstead creating bold and colourful cross stitch baubles to hang on the tree. Members of local WI’s, girl

guides, hospital workers and even a vicar have joined fans of cross stitch from across the world in creating beautiful baubles to be included in this festive art installation. Over 500 hand stitched mini works of art are included on the tree. Each one individual and reflecting the character and style of the stitchers themselves. Richard Grudzinski, Visitor Experience Manager for Standen, explains, ‘We wanted to invite the community to get involved and create a truly collaborative art installation. The fact that members from the local community and across the world have donated over 7,500 hours of their time creating these mini pieces of art is both Continues over the page.

All About our Hazel Dormouse The South being a final ‘stronghold’ for these furry, friendly-looking rodents means knowledge about them is more important than ever: The hazel dormouse is well-known for being a sleepyhead, and rightly so. It will spend about six months of the year in hibernation, curled into a little golden ball of fur in a cosy nest of leaves, and once a dormouse has entered its deep winter sleep it won’t wake up for anything but Spring. Dormice usually hibernate from November until April or even May, depending on the weather, but before they can think about going to bed they must first focus on fattening up.

up looking like a miniature clog. In contrast, mice and voles are much messier and leave obvious tooth marks, creating holes with edges that resemble a milled coin.

Autumn provides a bounty of nuts and berries perfect for this purpose. Dormice feast on blackberries, sloes, sweet chestnuts and – best of all – hazelnuts. Each one is packed full of fat and protein, providing a highcalorie reward that’s well worth the effort of gnawing through its tough outer shell. Dormice nibble hazelnuts in such a distinctive way that the empty shells are reliable clues to the presence of these elusive little creatures. They carve a neat, circular hole COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY with a smooth inner rim so that the discarded shell ends

Dormice themselves are much harder to find, mainly because they are nocturnal and secretive but also because they are now quite rare. Numbers have plummeted in the past hundred years and dormice have disappeared from half of their former range. Thankfully, southern England remains a stronghold but even here, dormouse distribution is still very patchy and remaining populations are often isolated. Dormice are almost entirely arboreal (living in trees) and rarely come down to the ground, so

they need plenty of diverse deciduous woodland, ideally with stands of their favourite hazel coppice, and a dense understorey of honeysuckle, bramble and shrubs to climb through. They can only ‘commute’ between woodland patches via suitable hedgerows, which provide safe passage through the landscape as well as a source of food and shelter. By restoring and reconnecting dormouse habitats across Sussex, this sleepy little character will be able to thrive once more - and a wealth of other woodland wildlife will benefit too. Dormice are slow breeders and poor dispersers and generally live in older woodlands with a welldeveloped understory often linked by old hedgerows. In the majority of woodlands in Britain the management required to maintain a well-developed understory has ceased, making them

less suitable for dormice, luckily for us we still have historic woodland in this area. Inappropriate management of hedgerows, or their removal, has meant that woods that have lost their dormice and will not be repopulated.

Conservation methods include managing existing woodland in a dormousefriendly way and providing nest boxes for the species to use (these can then optionally be monitored to gain an insight into population trends). If you think you have a suitable spot for a nest box, you might like the idea of gifting a Christmas present of a dormouse nest box to our British Wildlife this year?

What’s Happening in East Grinstead? Q&A session, where a panel of councillors discussed topics with an audience of 100 of our members. It was a highly successful first meeting and we will continue building strong and useful connections with the councillors. We have our next meeting planned for February 2019.

There is more happening in East Grinstead than you’d imagine. Our Facebook group, founded in May 2018 by local residents, has over 5000 members from all walks of life young and old. We share information, discuss matters that are important and relevant to our community. We all learn more about our neighbourhood and the people we share it with.

Our group doesn’t just discuss serious matters though. We welcome your local photos, your questions, and general chat and some humour too!

Our members include a number of councillors from EGTC, MSDC and WSCC. When they are able to, they engage directly with us, helping us discuss issues with first-hand information rather than us relying on rumours.

QUICK CROSSWORD

What’s Happening in East Grinstead group is run by a small team of voluntary moderators. Join us and share the Facebook community that spills out into real life too.

WORLD WAR 1 IN EAST GRINSTEAD LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

The first impact of the First World War on people in the town would be the sight of troops marching up the High Street on their way to barracks near Forest Row. They would have been used to the fact that young men flocked to enlist, before conscription was introduced in 1915. In the early days, men in their thousands enlisted. They were encouraged by the slogans “For King and Country”, and,” It will all be over by Christmas.” I find it difficult to understand the enthusiasm to join up. would remember is the Boer War in South Africa, possibly the last fought with rifles and without tanks and heavy guns, it seems reasonable to suppose that the early recruits thought that this war would be the same. Whole streets, football clubs, workers in the same factory, any group with a common interest, often joined up at the same time. West Street is a case in point. It is not known how many actually enlisted, but the memorials tell us the names of those who did not return. Men were exhorted on every Living

side to enlist. Major Beale of Standen, published a pamphlet telling that it was, “their duty to replace the wastage”! The Rev Youard, vicar of St Swithuns preached sermons from his pulpit with the same message. Even women who I would have hoped knew better gave white feathers to those of a suitable age who were not in uniform. I do not have any evidence of this happening in East Grinstead. Women took the place of men in many areas and the Continues over the page. Enquiries: 01342 300152

WORLD WAR 1 IN EAST GRINSTEAD CONTINUED

realisation that they could do the work of men was recognised at the end of the war by granting the vote to women over thirty. However, this did not always work. Streatfields Greengrocery business had to close during the war, not because the women in the family could not run the shop but because none of them could drive to London's markets to collect the fruit and vegetables.

be put to and the Royal flying Corps was founded. Musgrave was seconded to it and developed a new form of wireless telegraphy which allowed communication between planes and ground batteries thus improving the targeting of the guns. Unfortunately, once his new system was set up, he was sent back into the army and was mortally wounded on June 2nd 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal.

Some women were not content to do the work of men but decided that they had to guard the innocence of the younger girls who were excited by the soldiers who were stationed in and around the town. They set up patrols in the evenings looking out for anyone behaving in a manner they disapproved of.

William Argent signed up for the Royal Naval Air Service and trained in wireless telegraphy. He was posted to the Isle of Sheppey and later won the DSM for sinking a U Boat. Bill survived the war and died in East Grinstead aged 100 in 1999.

Most men who enlisted went into the army but some joined the navy and even fewer, the newly formed Royal Flying Corps, later to become the Royal Air Force. Local man, Maurice Bagot served on HMS Monmouth and was killed near the Coronel Islands off the coast of Chile.

The war memorial was dedicated in the High Street on July 23rd 1922. It was an event, which judging by the photographs, was attended by a large proportion of the population. Even one hundred years on, it forms the focal point of every Remembrance Sunday.

Edmund Hills served as an able seaman on board HMS Bulwark which blew up near Sheerness in 1914, he lived in Old Road and was twenty-one. Another casualty at sea was John Brewer of the Rifle Brigade. The troopship carrying him to Egypt was torpedoed of the port of Alexandria in December 1917. He lived in College Lane. It was even more unusual to be in the Royal Flying Corps but George Heasman died as the result of an accident in January 1918. Major Herbert Musgrave of East Grinstead had been an early champion of the use of aeroplanes in wartime but had not been listened to by the powers that be. He had witnessed Bleriot's landing at Dover and had been immediately struck by the potential ofCOMMUNITY such machines.
