Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Christmas Pomanders The pomander became popular during the Middle Ages when the black death and other ailments were widespread. Sanitation during the era was lacking to say the least; the streets and often homes were strewn with filth. People thought that the cause of their problems lay in the resulting stench lingering about the city. They believed that the pleasant scent of a pomander would repel the disease in the air. The Elite Classes took to wearing pomanders and it soon became a ‘fashion accessory’. Queen Elizabeth I was frequently depicted wearing one, as were other nobles day. These scented pomanders ranged from simple ones which were made of wood to stunning examples worked in silver or gold, studded with precious stones, and etched with intricate designs. Some pomanders were divided into sections, similar to an orange, into which several scents were placed. By the 17th and 18th century, however, a pomader was more often than not a decorated orange studded with cloves. It started to be mentioned as a Christmas or New Years custom; for instance in his Christmas masque, Ben Jonson wrote, “He has an orange and rosemary, but not a clove to stick in it.” A later description of New Year’s mentions children carrying pippins (apple variety) and oranges stuck with cloves in order to crave a blessing form their godfathers and godmothers. In Medieval times some pomanders were made from a paste which usually contained ambergris (a wax-like substance previously used in perfume

manufacture) which was rolled into an apple shape. Thus the term, “pomme ambre” (amber (gris) apple) was formed and from there the anglicized version of the word came about: pomander.

you wish, leave enough ribbon to be able to hang up. Alternatively you can thread a large needle with string and run it through the orange; making a knot at the bottom.

Want to make your own? Here are some simple steps to brings some gorgeous seasonal scents of Christmas into your home.

Insert the cloves; to make it easier use a toothpick or skewer to lightly pierce the skin. Make holes in vertical lines around the orange or you may choose to make patterns instead. Your cloves should be close but not touching, aim to cover as completely as possible.

You can hang pomanders in doorways, mantelpieces, on your Christmas tree or simply place several in a bowl. You will need • • • •

An orange Sewer or toothpick Ribbon. 1-2 ounces of cloves.

Cross-tie the ribbon around the orange: center ribbon on the top of the orange, hold ribbon in place and turn orange over, cross the ribbon and pull it tight against the orange put a pin in to secure the ribbon, turn orange over and bring ribbon together at top, either tie a knot or tie in a bow. Optional: for a stronger, richer aroma, you can then roll the orange in a mixture of spices: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg, 1 tablespoon allspice. Place everything in a paper bag or tissue paper and leave the orange in this mix for a week, turning once a day. Leave the bag in a dark, dry place. They also make a simple, lovely Christmas gift.

Wassailing Wassailing is therarely seen custom of going door-to-door singing Christmas carols, it hails from ancient, AngloSaxon times. It was often done in exchange for good cheer in the form of seasonal food and drink. The word ‘wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase ‘waes hael’, meaning “be thou hale” — i.e., “be in good health”.

Although wassailing is now viewed as an olden-day, joy-bringing activity, it was not always considered so innocent. Wassailing was sometimes associated with rowdy, drunk induced behaviour wherein homes were entered and free food and drink demanded.

Although the practice is synomymous with Christmas it is likely to have its roots in the indigenous Anglo-Saxon pagan beliefs. In the Middle Ages wassailing became a way of encouraging a feudal lord into giving to his peasants by begging charity. When approaching the Lord’s manor, they would sing something along the lines of ‘We are not daily beggars that beg from door to door, but we are friendly neighbours whom you have seen before’. And the famous Victorian carol, ‘Here We and Come and A Wassailing’ demonstrates the blessing given by the wassailers to the recipient: ‘Love and joy come to you,

And to you your wassail too;

And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year’

In the West Country where cider production is plentiful, wassailing also referred to drinking (and singing) to the health of the trees in the hopes that they might thrive better. An old rhyme goes: Wassaile the trees, that they may beare You many a Plum and many a Peare:

For more or lesse fruits they will bring, As you do give them Wassailing.

The drink ‘wassail’, made of hot mulled cider (among other ingredients), was associated with this practice and held in ‘wassail bowls’... again it too became associated with Christmas time customs.

Local History Notes

The Chamberlain political dynasty and East Grinstead by Dorothy Hatswell Joseph Chamberlain, father of Austen and Neville Chamberlain, was born in Birmingham. He was a wellknown industrialist having joined his uncle’s firm, Nettlefold & Chamberlain, screw manufacturers. He became Mayor of Birmingham and later became an M.P. His first wife, Harriet Kenrick died giving birth to his son, Austen. For twenty five years Joseph was on very distant terms with his son, apparently blaming him for his mother’s death. Five years later, in spite of his lingering grief at the death of his first wife, Joseph married her cousin, Florence Kenrick. By her he had another son Neville, and three daughters. Unfortunately, Florence also died in childbirth in 1875, having what would have been their fifth child, who sadly died at same time. Joseph then married Edith Endicott in 1888 in Washington D.C. She was the daughter of William Crowninshield Endicott, US Secretary of War. Austen followed his father into Parliament. His father later said that Austen had been “born in a red dispatch box”. His abilities were soon recognised by William Gladstone, who was Prime Minister at the time, and made Austen President of the Board of Trade. Austen became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1919 and made a very unpopular budget owing to the money that had been spent on the war. He was the Foreign Secretary in 1925 when he negotiated the Locarno Treaty to try to consolidate the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which had ended the First World War, seven years earlier. For his efforts he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that year. Austen married Ivy Muriel Dundas, a distant relative of Admiral Dundas, in 1906. Their oldest child, Joseph Austen Chamberlain was born in March 1908. He appears in the 1911 census lodging at 34, Earls Avenue, Folkstone with two nurses. As his parents do not appear anywhere in the census for that year, it would seem that they were abroad. Joseph was followed in 1912 by Beatrice Diane and then by Lawrence Endicott in 1917. The fact that they

Lawrence in 1919, Thornhill is in the background named their second son after Austen’s stepmother underlines their close relationship. Lawrence was born prematurely, weighing only 3lbs 12oz and his life was in the balance for two or three weeks; though happily, he recovered. During the First World War, Austen moved his family to Thornhill, on the Ashurst Wood and Forest Row border. He did this because of his fear that they could be bombed by the Germans who were carrying out constant air raids in London. They moved there in 1916 and stayed for three years. The choice of this location may have been due to the fact that he knew the area. His personal private secretary, Oliver Locker Lampson, lived at Rowfant and Austen sometimes stayed with him. Austen also noted to have written letters from Barton St Mary’s on the Holtye Road, E. Grinstead. Thornhill, the house he let, belonged to Magens Dorien Magens an important landowner who resided at Kidbrooke Park, Forest Row. He had formerly rented it out to Dowager Lady Sheffield, of the Abergavenny family who were again rich, aristocratic landowners, well known in the local area. The Abergavennys happened to be distant relatives by marriage of the Chamberlains, which is possibly how Austen came to know about the house in the first place. The Chamberlains by all accounts enjoyed their stay at Thornhill.

In 1919 Austen’s family moved to Twytt’s Ghyll, Fir Toll Road, Mayfield, “A pretty place with a lovely view, just what Ivy has always dreamed of.” It was here that Austen was able to enjoy his passion for alpines. Austen’s half brother, Neville, also followed his father into the House of Commons. He was elected to Parliament in 1918. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1923 and held other ministerial posts. In 1937 when Baldwin resigned as leader of the Conservative Party following the abdication of Edward VII, Chamberlain became Prime Minister. Austen had died just three months earlier and so did not see the only one of the family to achieve this high office. Neville went to Munich to negotiate with Adolph Hitler and came back waving an agreement which he thought promised “Peace in our Time.” He had also entered into an alliance with Poland saying we would support them if necessary. This meant that, when Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st 1939, England were forced to declare war on Germany two days later when Hitler would not withdraw his troops. Neville Chamberlain resigned in May 1940 so that a coalition government could be formed. Winston Churchill took over as Prime Minister and Chamberlain served on the War Committee. He died of cancer only six months later.

E n d less Lo ve Based on a true stor y, b y B o n x Tr i g w e l l A call came many years ago from a neighbour in the High Street, East Grinstead that an elderly resident who was 91 was finding it hard to manage her garden and could I help. After working for most of the day she was so pleased she asked me to stay for dinner that night as she was cooking beef Bourguignon; her late husband’s favourite. As we tucked in to a most excellent meal she looked at me and smiled. ‘I remember being your age’ she said with a twinkle in her eye. ‘Do you drink in the Dorset Arms?’ she added. ‘Oh yes’ I replied. ‘Of course I remember it as a girl; twenty one I was and it was the most majestic and resplendent Hotel in the South; Persian carpets, crystal chandeliers and the most exquisite service I had ever experienced.’ ‘Sounds like fun’ I smiled.

‘For a midnight feast?’ I enquired innocently. ‘No you silly young man, to make love as we didn’t want to disturb the other guests at the Hotel’ she chuckled. ‘Oh... okay then.’ ‘The Summer house was immaculately furnished and there was a big old couch; the pattern was of huge red and while roses and it was so very comfortable as I seem to recall.’ She giggled again and took a deep sip of wine. ‘Of course no-one knew of our passionate encounters but we used to make love until the sun rise and sneak back to our suite just in time for breakfast.’ I looked at her and her face was incandescent. ‘Of course the next day Harold was shipped off as the war in France was coming to a close; He had proposed to me on the couch and we were set to marry in the coming months.’ Her face suddenly turned very sombre and a tear leaked from her eye.

‘Yes; it was dear’ she said with misty eyes, ‘Myself and Harold used to stay there during the first world war; as an officer we stayed in the Sackville suit on the third floor; the view of the garden, and especially the Ashdown forest was breathtaking.’

‘Hey, are you okay?’

‘I can just imagine’ I agreed sipping from a glass of Chateau Mouton Rothschild; the label on the bottle said 1945.

Three months later Irene passed away and her cottage was sold on; at the same time the Dorset Arms Hotel had closed and was being re-vamped as a public house and offices for a major wine distribution company.

‘And of course the summer house at the bottom of the garden... well!’ she said with excited eyes. ‘I’m intrigued; tell me more?’ She giggled lightly, blinking her old tired eyes and put down her silver fork. ‘We used to go down to the oval summer house at midnight; to... you know?’

‘He... he... he never came back you know.’ ‘I’m so sorry’ I said and reached out and took her frail bony hand which was shaking.

The garden out the back had become a jungle and was un-approachable as the storms of 1987 had caused total destruction and after tree surgeons had removed most of the broken and twisted wood I was called in the redesign the land. On a cold December morning I noticed a large holly

tree, covered in bright red berries and there was a white Dove feasting away on the succulent fruits... and behind that was an oval structure that had remained hidden for over 70 years. I trimmed the holly back and behind it was the remains of the oval summer house; three huge trees had crashed through its roof and destroyed almost the entire building. On the back wall was a tatty couch, with a red and white rose pattern; it was rotten and mildew was growing, the wooden frame had disintegrated. But next to that was a small table, and on it there stood a gleaming crystal vase; the sun broke through the cloud illuminating the ruin and in the vase was one red rose and one white rose; they looked like they had just been placed there moments ago. I took the roses and cutting them off, having left eight inches above the leaf node, I planted them in a secure place in the Portland garden where they still reside to this day and every year produce some of the most beautiful and fragrant roses I have ever seen.

Mothers’ quote It’s true, Christmas can feel like a lot of work, particularly for mothers. But when you look back on all the Christmases in your life, you’ll find you’ve created family traditions and lasting memories. Those memories, good and bad, are really what help to keep a family together over the long haul.

Sackvil le Col lege at Christmas

You don’t have to look very far to discover the one building in East Grinstead that truly represents Christmas and all that’s associated with the festive season. Seen in the snow, Sackville College is a classic backdrop to yuletide cheer and of course, home to our very own Christmas carol ‘Good King Wenceslas’. Written by the then warden of the college, John Mason Neale, and first published in 1853 the carol is one of the most popular in the English speaking world. A strange sort of affair you may think when Wenceslas himself came from central Europe. But it was Neale sitting at his study window overlooking a somewhat bleak and desolate Ashdown Forest, who set the carol against a forest background, the same as he was seeing. Around this time Christmas at the college attracted the great and good of the neighbourhood, with no shortage of Earls, Countesses and Viscounts. At times though the ceremony was thought to have gone on for too long. “The service was marred by its excessive length, one hour and twenty minutes being too much. Half an hour should have been the outside of its duration”, was the comment of a contemporary report in a parish magazine. However, perhaps the appearance of the Lord of Misrule borne in on a yule log by four stalwart yeomen might have cheered things up. Certainly the distribution of two large metal dishes filled with yule cakes known as ‘bambinos’ and made of light paste in the shape of an infant child added to the jollity. Back in the hall of the college choristers in the gallery sang glees, including a famous one composed by the sixth Earl of Dorset: ‘To all you ladies now on land’.

These days the college is still blessed with song and music at Christmas, and a regular appearance of the local Lifeboat Choir is perhaps the nearest connection we still have with the old Earl. - Simon Kerr, Tourist Officer East Grinstead

A Christmas Carol (an extract)

by George Wither (1622) So now is come our joyful’st feast, Let every man be jolly. Each room with ivy leaves is drest, And every post with holly. Though some churls at our mirth repine, Round your foreheads garlands twine, Drown sorrow in a cup of wine, And let us all be merry. Now all our neighbours’ chimneys smoke, And Christmas blocks are burning; Their ovens they with bak’d-meats choke, And all their spits are turning. Without the door let sorrow lie, And if for cold it hap to die, We’ll bury ’t in a Christmas pie,

Time for some Local Christmas Cheer Christmas kicked off a little earlier than usual this year here in East Grinstead, with the big Christmas Family Festival which took place on the last Sunday in November. If you missed it, then don’t despair as there is still the High Street’s ‘Twas the Sunday before Christmas’ event coming up on Sunday 21st of December. This is a very special traditional Dickensian take on the festive season, courtesy of all the High Street traders. Most of the shops and stores staff appear dressed up in suitable attire, and there will be special events and competitions for the children through the day. The high spot of the day is when the shop owners and staff all come out into the High Street and serenade the crowds with traditional carols; where else apart from East Grinstead would you get this sort of service!

We hope that you will also like to take a wander around town and admire this year’s Christmas lights. We really made an impact last year with a bigger and better display and this year we are going to expand them with some very special solar powered displays in Railway Approach. The Rotary Club’s Christmas tree will be back in the High Street, and the usual traditional Christmas concerts will take place around the town. If you get the chance to go to one of them, then we would urge you to try Sackville College as it is one of the great experiences that you can have in the town. Afterall, it brought the world that very special carol ‘Good King Wenceslas’.

Another McIndoe Moment were submitted to the festival. It was the toughest year ever in terms of making the selections but in the end the programme was boiled down to three distinct programmes of shorts, and four features. To be able to catch this special screening, make your way to Brighton on Saturday 6th December at 12:30pm at the Dukes at Komedia Cinema - we recommend booking in advance.

The Film, ‘McIndoe’ has been chosen as part of the final line-up selected for Brighton Festival’s Cincity. It is the story of well-known pioneering burns surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe, who rebuilt the faces and shattered lives of WW2 fighter pilots at Queen Victoria Hospital. Organisers state: ‘An enormous number of films, ranging from feature films and documentaries to short dramas, animations, and experimental films 22 | December 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Pooh’s Ponderings

 “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.”  “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”  “Weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them.”

Words of Wisdom for the holiday season, from our favourite little star of Ashdown Forest, Winnie-the-Pooh.

 “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”

 Piglet: “How do you spell ‘love’?” Pooh: “You don’t spell it...you feel it.”

 “You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.”

 “You are braver than you believe. Stronger than you seem. And smarter than you think.”

 “Promise me you’ll never forget me because if I thought you would, I’d never leave.”

 “The things that make me different are the things that make me.”

 “A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.”  “A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside.”

 “If the person you are talking to does not appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in this ear.”

 “Love is taking a few steps backward, maybe even more… to give way to the happiness of the person you love.”

 “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together keep me in your heart. I’ll stay there forever.”

 “A day spent with you is my favourite day. So today is my new favourite day.”

 “Sometimes the smallest things take the most room in your heart.”

 “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

 “Some people care too much. I think it’s called love.”

Words of wisdom from a cuddly bear. Thank you, Pooh!

Quote Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!

We would like to wish all of our readers a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

Rich mince pies Also perfect as a gift for friends. Makes: 12

Ingredients: • 300g plain flour • 75g butter, diced • 75g white fat (or butter) diced • 410g jar Mincemeat • 2 tbsp milk • 1 medium egg yolk • Caster sugar for sprinkling, or icing sugar • A pinch of cinnamon for dusting

What to do: 1. Sieve the flour into a large mixing bowl, then lightly rub in the butter and/or fat, until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Sprinkle 2 tbsp cold water into the mixture, then mix with a round-bladed knife until a dough starts to form. Draw the mixture together with your hands until it makes a rough ball. If it is too dry, add a few drops of water, taking care not to make the dough wet and sticky. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for at least 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured work surface, until it is about 3mm thick. Cut out 12 pastry discs using a 8cm fluted cutter, then 12 small discs using a 6cm fluted cutter. Line a 12-hole bun tin with the larger discs. 3. Using a teaspoon, fill the lined tin with mincemeat. Dampen the edges of the small pastry discs on one side by brushing them with a little cold water. Gently press the small discs, damp side down, on top of the filled pastry bottoms and seal the edges. 4. Whisk the milk into the egg yolk to make a glaze. Brush this glaze on the top of each mince pie. Prick the lids with a fork to allow the steam to escape while cooking. 5. Place into the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for 4-5 minutes in the tray before transferring to a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar and a pinch of cinnamon.

Help the birds this Winter Once the temperature drops and the food runs out birds will start coming back to gardens looking for some extra help to keep warm. Many small birds die of cold over the winter months. By putting out a little extra food you can really help them out and you get the added bonus of being able to enjoy watching these amazing animals close up and personal. Top feeding tips: 1. Don’t give too much. Amounts provided should allow for rapid turnover to reduce the chance of food becoming mouldy or contaminated. 2. Natural foods are best but in cold weather good leftovers with a high fat content such as bacon rind, grated cheese, cooked rice and pasta will be beneficial. 3. Don’t put out salted nuts, desiccated coconut, highly spiced food or very dry bread. 4. Food that has been contaminated with bird droppings and saliva can be a reservoir for some diseases that affect birds so clean your bird feeder, table and bath regularly with boiling water and disinfectant.

Painting & Decorating High quality, tidy, friendly service 30 Years Experience in the local area.

5. Always wear gloves when cleaning your feeders. Brushes and equipment used for cleaning bird feeders should not be used for other purposes and should be kept and used outside. 6. Some birds die in cold weather due to dehydration as water in bird baths freeze so please remember to put out fresh water everyday.

Blue tit and great tit feeding / Alan Price

7. Supplementary feeding can never provide all the natural proteins and vitamins that birds need so try to also include natural food sources in your garden. Why not plant a native hedgerow or a couple of fruit trees? Let your plants go to seed and don’t prune shrubs until late in winter... Food for thought. Think Charity this Christmas

Locally based Philippa Jacobs recently set up a charity, the response from the community has been amazing so far. Here is a ‘Q&A’ with her:

What is the mission of your charity? Although most schools in Tanzania are underresourced it would be impossible to make a lasting difference to them all. The charity hopes to make a sustainable and lasting difference to the few hundred children that attend Chanzige school and concentrate on projects that will benefit the local community as well as the children at the school.

What inspired you to start this locally based charity? In Oct 2012 my 17 year old son, George visited Chanzige primary school as part of a sixth form project. On his return I was particularly interested to hear about this part of his trip. I was made redundant in July 2013 and took a few months off work. I went to Tanzania to see for myself and was horrifed by the lack of resources. There is nothing on the walls in the classrooms, three children share one small desk, there are 50 children to each class, they share basic

resources such as pencils and rulers. Their library could only be described as pathetic and the teachers struggled to administer the required curriculum due to a shortage of text books. The children have to provide their own exercise books, for some families this is quite a challenge. I had taken some books with me, I watched a child look at the front cover of a children’s atlas for a full two minutes before he even turned to look inside. Children in the UK would have given that book a cursory glance! Regardless of the challenges these children face they are the happiest, most welcoming individuals I have ever met. They consider an education a privilege and work astonishingly hard to reach their goals. It was very easy to be inspired by these astonishing young people!

How has it gone so far? Far better than I could ever imagine! The charity got it’s official HMRC status in Jan this year. Since then we have been able to provide the school with a completely refurbished classroom. This included electricity (there was none at the school before), a new floor, painting and decorating, shelving, new furniture and with the help of an organisation called Meetings Industry Meeting Needs (MIMN) we provided the classroom with six new PCs. This classroom has also become a community learning centre in the evenings. As well as this we have replaced all the black boards with write on wipe off white boards. We have given them 100 A4 whiteboards, this has meant that

the precious exercise books can be kept for ‘best work’. The teaching staff have also said that the white boards have given the children a renewed enthusiasm and they are able to teach more effectively and at a greater pace. I have been to various local schools and talked to children about the difficulties their counterparts face. This has resulted in a donation of 400 books, 400 pencil cases and a beautiful hand made blanket, all of which are now in place at the school. We also managed to replenish the Swahili section of their library with 100 new books.

What do you hope to accomplish in the near future? When we visited in October we were horrified to find that the school had had no clean drinking water since July. Their antiquated rainwater harvesting system had been vandalised and the rest was worn out. As a temporary measure we paid for water to be delivered. However, we are now trying to raise sufficient funds to provide the school with a modern, clean and sustainable system.

What has the local response been? Astonishing! The response has been truly amazing. Friends and family have been so supportive and as time goes on I am finding that complete strangers are offering their support.

How has it affected you on a personal level? I had never given any thought to doing charity work, although I used to give a regular donation to a couple of bigger charities. However I have found this is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. My children are now at university so although I work part time I am able to dedicate quite a considerable amount of time to the charity. This is something that gives me so much pleasure I would recommend it to everyone! There is a fundraising quiz at Escots school, East Grinstead on the 5th of Dec at 7:30pm. The not-so-wholesome Greek Christmas Elves Elves invoke thoughts of ever-friendly, ever-joyful, hard-working Santa’s helpers. However in Greece it’s quite the opposite; their Christmas elves called, Kallikántzari, are more like hobgoblins which frankly hail from the ‘dark-side’. They surface on Earth only during the 12-day period from Christmas to Epiphany (January 6th), just after the winter solstice during which time the sun has ceased its seasonal movement. They have been variously imagined but many Greeks think of them as tall, black, hairy, with burning red eyes, goats’ or donkeys’ ears, monkeys’ arms, tongues that hang and heads that are huge! According to Greek legend, these creatures dwell in the centre of the earth, where their mission is to chop at the huge ‘world tree’ which symbolises Earth’s foundations so it will collapse along with Earth. When they are about to finish their toils Christmas arrives, they forget the tree and are able to come to the surface to spread their mischief. Apparently while they are on the rampage they hide in people’s houses slipping down the chimney, overturn furniture, devour Christmas foods,

contaminate water, among other naughty antics. Throughout Greece, numerous rituals are performed to keep them away. One way of deterring the Kallikantzaro would be to leave a colander on your doorstep to trick them. Since they must not count above 2 (3 is a holy number and by pronouncing it, they kill themselves) they end up sitting at the doorstep counting, 1, 2... 1, 2... each hole of the colander, all night, until the sun rises and they are forced to hide again. Some houses sprinkle holy water in each room to deter these pests. Finally, on the Epiphany, the sun starts moving again, and they must go underground again to continue their sawing. To their frustration, they see that during their absence the World Tree has healed itself, so they must start all over again.

Early illustrations of St. Nicholas make him out to be a stern symbol of discipline rather than the jolly, rotund character we know today.

Nearly all of the most popular Christmas songs including ‘Winter Wonderland’, ‘Chestnuts roasting…’, and ‘I’m Dreaming of a white Christmas’ were written by Jewish people.

An artificial Christmas tree would have to be reused for more than 20 years to be “greener” than buying a fresh-cut tree annually. We frequently abbreviate Christmas as X-mas because of ancient tradition. X is the Greek letter “chi” which is an abbreviation for the word “Christ” in Greek. Some Japanese people traditionally eat at KFC for Christmas dinner, thanks to a successful marketing campaign 40 years ago. KFC is so popular that customers must place their Christmas orders 2 months in advance.
