Guttering Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

EG Hockey Club’s Olympian

Ashley Jackson

With Olympic fever rising month on month in the run up to Summer, we profile Ashley Jackson, the first British Player ever to win the Federation of International Hockey’s Young Player of the Year award in 2009. A leading light in the world of hockey, he also plays for our town’s incredible Premier-league winning Hockey Club.

You’ve been a member of East Grinstead Hockey Club for a while, why did you choose it & what makes it special? When I was around 14 years old I (and my father) had a decision to make, it was time to move on from my first hockey club Tunbridge Wells HC and the chosen destination was East Grinstead HC. It is special to me because of how welcoming they were and what friends/family I have around the club, it is my home really.

Personal Profile questions: Year of Birth & Birthplace? 1987, Kent When did you joined East Grinstead Hockey Club? 2005, rejoined professionally: 2010/11

What are your personal hopes for the British team? Well obviously my hopes are that we will end up with a gold medal and that everyone from team mates to my girlfriend and family members can enjoy the moment.

Who or where do you draw inspiration from? I guess its more who do I draw it from, we spend so many hours, days, weeks, months and for some of the group 6-10 years together; it is very easy to look around and be inspired by the person standing next to you in your squad. That person or persons are more than just team mates. For this group we have had a lot of experiences and I’m sure like many other teams more bad than good but it’s the sharing of the experiences and getting out the other side together stronger that inspires us. Outside of the group my girlfriend Eli and my brother Wesley are always there for some inspirational chat and a different perspective that comes from outside the squad. Also mum and dad have been there from the very start.

Major Honours? 2009 European Champions, 2009 World Young Player of the Year. 2009 and 2010 World All-Star Team Highlight of the last year? Many hours spent with Michelle Pearson (strength and conditioner) and Laura Hanna (physio) while being out injured and then returning from injury after 8 and a half months out. Eli (girlfriend) returning after 6 months travelling.

Any message to young potential professional sports players in this area?

My first under par round shooting 70, -1. (golf).

Take each day as it comes, no regrets. Love what you do and who you do it with. Work hard and enjoy yourself.

Golf.

Favourite hobby? Favourite Film?

Who are your Local Sponsors? BMW cooper Tunbridge Wells who are an absolute pleasure to work with, would like to say thank you to Nikki Pipe and to everyone down there. Also to Sweetwoods Park Golf Club, and Grays my equipment sponsor.

Hangover, Remember the Titans, Any Given Sunday. Favourite Song? Love Walked in by Thunder.

GET FIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME Michael Wall, established his Hire Fitness business 3 years ago & has built up a large portfolio of clients hiring & selling fitness equipment for use in the home He also supplies commercial equipment to gyms, offices, salons and studios. People are increasingly choosing to hire in their homes for many reasons, most often for convenience & lack of time or inclination to go the gym. Parents can also look after their children whilst they exercise at home. All Hire Fitness models are of the highest quality, robust, good looking, with excellent computer functions. There is a hire- to- buy scheme where clients can try a machine prior to making a purchase. The Power Plate is his most popular model, it can burn 350 calories in 10 minutes. Other benefits include cellulite busting, improved blood circulation, stronger bones but most of all – improved toning.

Call Michael at Hire Fitness on 0845 094 2292 or 07932 139386 or email on mwall@hirefitness.co.uk www.hirefitness.co.uk “Before I contacted Hire Fitness, I was not feeling good about myself, and was rather overweight. I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex

Off The Beaten Track Thursday’s 6-8pm

Local Radio gives you a freedom to communicate to the listener not found in any other medium. If what we’re saying or playing is not right, then we can be informed so much more immediately than a national or even a regional Radio Station. Our remit is to serve the community in an engaging, direct way and to encourage close interaction. Every Thursday I bring you an eclectic mix of Rock, Blues, Americana & Easy Listening, along with some rarely played oldies. It’s a diverse, unpredictable two hours with no boundaries. I try & play music that you won’t hear elsewhere, yet is accessable to all ages. I prepare what I’m going to play very carefully & try to create what I call the ‘wave effect’ of light & shade. I’ll feature Album tracks both new & old from all musical genres and Singer/Songwriters are always a prolific part of the mix. There is so much good music out there just bubbling under the surface that never gets played on mainstream radio; I try to redress that & give you a radio experience that is both unique & local. … listen in and judge for yourself! Women Inspiring Action and Transforming Lives:

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL EAST GRINSTEAD Soroptimists are a network of 90,000 diverse, dynamic women world-wide “working together to make a difference”. Soroptimists’ vision is that they are “committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide.” Soroptimists are proud to be a “global voice for women”. The name Soroptimists loosely translates as “best for women”. They tackle a breadth of issues affecting women, at a global and local level, including human rights, education and health. As an example at a national and international level lobbying for legislation to help women victims and supporting local women’s refuges. Soroptimists are privileged to hold General Consultative Status with the United Nations which

means representative member are consulted about issues affecting women and girls. They have fun too, as these images demonstrate: Soroptimists from East Grinstead Club stood on Pooh Bridge, Ashdown Forest joining hundreds of other women on bridges worldwide marking International Women’s Day supporting women’s rights in peace negotiations across the world The East Grinstead Club is running another very exciting project in partnership with the East Grinstead Rangers, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows. A sewing project, led by Soroptimists, was proposed in which all Guides, no matter what their age, could be involved in. Together they are making dresses from pillowcases to send out to Africa. This involves tacking, pinning, cutting, machining and sewing. Soroptimists take their sewing machines and trimmings with the aim of helping the girls

make a dress. Guides need only bring a bright coloured pillowcase. Sewing skills are taught by the Soroptimists and a lovely dress results which will be excitedly received in Africa!

East Grinstead Living • February 2012

East Grinstead Town Fairtrade Steering Group The Group, founded in 2005 as an East Grinstead Town Council initiative, has always operated independently. East Grinstead is recognised as a Fairtrade Town, a status conferred by the Fairtrade Foundation. Our purpose is to raise local awareness of Fairtrade labelled products, encourage local shops, schools & businesses to sell these and/or to stock them for their own use and to represent the Fair Trade movement through local town fairs. A good opportunity to showcase this is during the annual Fairtrade Fortnight, in 2012 running from 27 February to 11 March. Local supermarkets offer a growing range of Fairtrade goods for sale and we hope this trend will continue. Additionally, a majority of our individual committee members are independent Fairtraders who continue offering many products for sale through local church and school premises. Fairtrade’s focus is on tackling poverty and helping farmers and producers from the developing world improve the quality of their lives and take more control over their futures. By providing stable prices for their goods, Fairtrade reduces the uncertainties of market fluctuations and provides stability and hope. For most Fairtrade products, buyers must pay at least the Fairtrade minimum price, or the market price if higher. Also, producer organisations are always paid a social premium, a mandatory amount above the cost of the goods. Local producers decide how to spend this, agreed democratically within local communities for their benefit, not for company owners. Often invested in farm improvements, processing facilities, schools and medical centres; these can change the whole community.

Want to know more? See www.fairtrade.org.uk. Local information from Ali Hill tel: 07941303326. Watch out for us at the May Fair, during Jubilee Week, at local churches, and The Meads and St Peter’s Schools.

You may know about these tips, but it’s always helpful to be reminded...

1. Try very hard to shop just once a week in the supermarket. For your mid-week shop buy your milk/eggs/bread, etc. at your small local shops (or use your local milkman who now often provides other products to your door as well). Going back to your supermarket for the ‘mid-week shop’ inevitably makes you spend over and above budget as you end up getting more than you intended - they are very clever at luring us to spend more than we should! 2. If a tiny hole appears in clothes, get out the thread then and there. If you catch it right at the beginning, you can fix it fast & no-one will be able to tell it was there. If you don’t have the perfect colour thread it doesn’t always matter, get as close to it as possible but the key is to catch it as soon as it appears. 3. Ring around your toilet? This is caused by alkaline deposits. Pour one or two cups of white vinegar into the toilet once a month.

Imberhorne Sports Hall Update Plans for the Imberhorne Sports Hall are gathering pace. The school is confident that planning permission will be granted by early February and the next stage will be to put the project out to tender. A group of staff – supported by the Parents’ Committee – are making plans for our Diamond Jubilee Celebration Event “Imberthon” which will take place on 1st June. This will involve a sponsored walk, giant picnic and a team marathon. Meanwhile, a staff group is planning to climb the 3 Peaks in the same weekend and PE staff are hoping to run from ‘pier to pier’ along the south coast. Mr Jon Ford, Headteacher Please support them when possible, thank you – Tally, East Grinstead Living

Baileybridge is run by Sue Risley who has over 30 years experience in the field. Sue provides exceptional attention to detail and is personally involved with all projects. Sue’s fundamental approach to the service the company provides “is to provide a service as good as, or better than, one she would wish to receive herself and always to go that extra mile” Baileybridge is in the service industry – the business is all about offering exceptional service in every respect.

Tel: 01825 714 922 www.baileybridge.co.uk

Here we ask Sue a few questions about her business:

What started you off in the refurbishment and construction business? I was born into it. My father bought and renovated properties and my first recollection of being interested was at the age 4 when, in my mind, I designed and then began to build a ‘house’ in my parents garden, out of some old bricks I found laying around – I got no further than 5 along and 2 high – not surprisingly! I then made a proper attempt with my first property aged 18, which was a total refurbishment which I largely did myself, learning as I went. I have always had a good ‘eye’ and can see the finished result right at the outset. I bought and sold a few more properties and experienced plenty of bad service and bad manners renovating these; which was a very easy lesson in ‘how to treat a Client’ – mainly the opposite to what I had often being on the receiving end of.

What services do Baileybridge provide? We provide a turn-key service – starting with a Client’s vision we can ‘put this down on paper’ (drawings), take it through planning and building control, build it, fit it, decorate it and provide the soft furnishings. Clients can hand their project to us at any stage and we hand it back finished. If they don’t want to – Clients do not have to do, or organise anything what-so-ever. Our aim with every project is perfection, which we achieve. We provide all skills in-house which is efficient, convenient and cost effective for Clients. Sue hand-holds the Client and manages the project, from first introduction to completion of the work.

Thursday’s Ghost by Gary I David

Tommy stopped outside the gloomy, building and stared up at the attic. A young girl appeared at the window. He trembled. The gate swung open and Tommy entered. The gate latch clicked like a mousetrap behind him... a cold shiver scuttled along his spine. At the rear of the house an open grid beckoned. His heart raced as he lowered himself into the dark cellar. A feral scream filled the air and a young boy with a ghostly white face leapt towards him. Tommy squealed and fell backwards. The pale boy stood over him, holding a hatchet above his head. Tommy wet himself. Suddenly, the boy burst out laughing. He reached a hand out to Tommy and through his fit of giggling managed to speak. ‘Hello there; I’m Phillip.’ He glanced at the wet patch that was spreading over Tommy’s crotch. ‘Oh, I say, sorry old boy; I didn’t mean to frighten you quite that much.’ He grabbed Tommy’s hand with an ice cold grip and helped him to his feet. ‘Come on,’ he shouted.

‘Playing,’ he said. ‘What are you doing here... apart from trespassing that is?’ He smiled slyly.

Tommy followed the boy upstairs. It was like stepping back in time. An oil lamp cast an eerie glow across the room.

‘Oh, I see. Weren’t you afraid?’

‘What do you fancy playing?’ he shouted enthusiastically, ‘Jacks, dominoes, chequers, marbles?’ Tommy stared around the room. A massive family portrait dominated. The man in the painting looked very grand and his wife and daughter were resplendent in their fine silk gowns, but it was the boy in the painting that caught Tommy’s eye. ‘Is that you?’ he asked Phillip. The boy laughed. ‘Don’t be silly, that picture was painted more than a hundred years ago; do I look a hundred?’ ‘No, of course not; but if you were a ghost...’ said Tommy. The boy grinned. ‘Do you live here?’ Tommy asked; his throat was dry and it came out as a strained whisper. ‘Honestly, does it look as though anyone lives here?’ Phillip said. ‘Look,’ he ran his finger along the piano lid; it was black with decades of dust. ‘No-one’s lived here for years.’ ‘So what are you doing here then?’ Tommy asked.

‘I just wanted to see what the house was like.’ ‘No... what’s to be scared of?’ ‘The ghost, of course,’ Phillip laughed. ‘Did you think that I was the ghost when I jumped you in the cellar? I bet you did... I’ve never seen anyone that frightened before.’ ‘Anyone would be frightened; you were wielding an axe.’ ‘True; but you asked me if I was a ghost... you must have been expecting to find a spook.’ Tommy fidgeted uncomfortably. ‘Well, okay, I was looking for the ghost.’ ‘Well, you’re in luck; I just happen to know when and where the ghost appears.’ ‘No way... honest?’ ‘Of course... I’ve seen her hundreds of times. Have you ever seen her, Tommy?’ ‘Yeah... I saw her at the attic window. She was smiling at me.’ ‘Smiling? Wow, that’s unusual; she’s usually staring, wild eyed and nasty; with blood running from the wound.’

Tommy gulped. ‘So where does she appear... and when?’ Phillip whispered. ‘Her name’s Lydia... she’s the girl in the painting... she walks through that wall over there at exactly five thirty every Thursday... she was killed on a Thursday... at five thirty.’ ‘But it’s Thursday today.’ ‘So it is,’ agreed Phillip, ‘and its twenty nine minutes past five. She’ll be here any second now.’ ‘Oh my God,’ exclaimed Tommy. ‘Will she be able to see us?’ ‘Well, they say that if she can see you,’ he paused for effect, ‘then she can kill you.’ Tommy paled. ‘But she saw me... from the attic window.’ ‘Gosh,’ Phillip looked worried. ‘Are you positive?’ ‘I think so.’ ‘Well, we’ll soon find out; here she comes.’

Thursday’s Ghost continued A fine grey mist seeped through the wall and suddenly there she was. Lydia stared at Tommy. Cold sweat chilled his body and he shook uncontrollably. She screamed and ran at him, a huge knife in her hand. He cried out, curled up in a ball... and wet himself again. He waited for the sharp pain of the cold steel and thought of his mother. Tommy peeped through the haze of his tear filled eyes and Lydia and Phillip collapsed in a fit of laughter. ‘What have I told you about playing games like that?’ a woman’s stern voice cut through the laughter.

‘Come here this instant.’ The children walked over to their mother, heads hung, but still giggling. ‘Apologize to Tommy,’ she ordered. ‘Sorry, Tommy,’ Lydia smiled. ‘Me too,’ said Phillip. ‘It was just a bit of fun.’ ‘Please accept my apologies,’ said the lady, ‘I’m afraid they don’t have much opportunity to play these days. Come children,’ she said. The boy and girl took their mother’s hand and they all walked straight through the wall. Tommy sank back and watched, gobsmacked as a disembodied hand waved, then disappeared.

this year…

2012 is the Centenery of Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition to Antartica. In January 1912 Scott & his 5 man team reached the South Pole, only to discover he had been preceded by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen 33 days earlier. Although the return journey started well, by the end of February the temperatures plummeted. By March time the worsening foot condition of team member Lawrence Oates was slowing his companions, he stepped outside their tent in a raging blizzard, saying, “I am just going outside and I may be some time”, he did not return. This act of sacrifice with his famous words has since then entered the world of literature and art in various guises. Scott’s diary entries states: ‘We knew that Oates was walking to his death... it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman’. However, his sacrifice was not enough to save the others. They struggled on to a point 11 miles south of their supplies Depot, their efforts dashed by a fierce, unrelenting blizzard. In the end their supplies ran out. Scott’s last diary entry, dated 29 March 1912, the presumed date of their deaths, ends with these words:

‘Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more. R. Scott. For God’s sake look after our people’. Athough ill-fated it is nevertheless one of most well-known & celebrated expeditions in history. It will be marked this year with many events across Great Britain. Visit: www.scott100.org to find these events.

Gorgonzola cheese with thyme-infused honey & roast peaches Serves 8

Recipe by Chef

Dean Samsudin

at the Brambletye Hotel

A very simple and pretty dish, the elements work together brilliantly. It’s important all components are served at room temperature.

Method

Ingredients

1. Pre-heat oven to 200 C/400 F/Gas Mark 6 2. Halve and stone the peaches and sit them comfortably together, cut side up, in an ovenproof dish. 3. Place a generous knob of butter and some whole branches of thyme on each peach half. Drizzle with honey and roast until the flesh seems to just about to collapse and the peaches are nicely caramelised. The length of time depends on how ripe the peaches are, roughly 15 minutes. 4. Going on 1 tbsp per person and ½ branch thyme each, put more honey in a saucepan with thyme and gently heat, do not boil, for 10 mins. Cool. 5. Place a piece of gorgonzola on each plate, drizzle with cooled infused honey and place half a peach on each plate, serve.

4 Peaches 3 oz unsalted butter 16 sticks of fresh thyme plus 4 for infused honey 8 tbsp honey, plus 2-3 tbsp for drizzling 8 slices gorgonzola cheese, or quantity according to taste
