STOP WINTER WATER

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Index: Support Local Business

Dear Residents, Welcome to the February issue. With the day of love, Valentines Day, on our heels we’ve got a feature about it’s origins and some practical tips - see page 14. We’re thankfully inching towards Springtime and as the garden starts to rise in the priority stakes we’ve an article about planting wildflowers. There is a growing movement towards doing this, not least because of it’s assistance to nature. The world famous surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe, who worked tirelessly at the Queen Victoria Hospital to give young men injured in the war their lives back will shortly be immortalised with a statue in our town; see our fascinating feature where we hear from the sculptor Martin Jennings. Thank you for any support given to our local businesses, hopefully you can find the services/ products you need here and remember there are always new businesses coming on board. Drop us a line if have any community news/events. mums the Word... Disguise Vegetables! Chop broccoli into tiny tiny pieces and throw a couple of handfuls into the Bolognese or lasagne...

A Sweat Treat & Healthy! (minus all that sugar)

Blend berries, kiwi, etc. or whatever you choose plus bananas into a good mixture (or use a pre-made smoothie if you’re short on time) and put into ice-lolly making kit, and into the freezer. A perfect ‘treat’ for kids without all the junk, and 1 of their 5 a day!

Pocket Money? To Give or Not to Give that is the question.

A Mothers Quote of the month:

It’s always difficult to know how much to give especially when the kids are getting so much anyway! Every family will have their own system. A friend swears by this method: Every chore done around the house/garden is rewarded with money, not lots but enough for them to make the effort and build it up the kitty. On the flip side if nothing is done, there is no pocket money and cleaning their own room doesn’t count as a chore. So really it’s all down to them as to how much they get at the end of the week...

Sir Archibald McIndoe’s mother (see our other article) always stressed to him that: “you can make whatever you like of your life when the time comes, but the preparations for it you must make now” Mabel McIndoe

Screens v. Real-life In our never-ending search to find alternatives to screens here is a suggestion: Kids demanding to play hours on the DS or Wii? Get them to make yummy pancakes instead! (Pancake Day is on the 12th February) They are so easy to make, ingredients are simple (2 eggs, 100mg plain flour, 300 ml milk) and the kids love them and we love them too! So it’s a win-win. Given a bit of guidance, trust and confidence they will be cooking them in no time.* *We feel we ought to say that allowing a child to use a frying pan may not be suitable for all families or for all ages. Some children may need to be supervised (certainly at the beginning) so please use common sense.

Beauty tips for thrifty times COSMETICS FROM YOUR CUPBOARD

by East Grinstead Resident, Helen Blackman MGBT

Last year I recorded some documentaries called the Men who made us Fat and another about why our skin ages. On the face of it these are not connected, but it turns out that sugar is the culprit in both cases. We know that sugar is not good for us, but I was surprised to learn that it also ages us too, along with too much sun and free radicals which are a by-product of breathing oxygen. So, please do watch your sugar intake. Supplements of omegas and vitamin A, E and C are a good idea. However it is not all bad news, sugar can be used as part of a beauty treatment mixed with oil as it is an extremely good exfoliant. I have always had very dry hands with ragged cuticles and no matter how many times I apply moisturiser, they remain dry, but I have discovered that if I exfoliate my hands every day, they do absorb creams more readily which is a great improvement on their quality and appearance. As we age, our skin is not so efficient at renewing the cells, so it becomes dull and dry. I am always banging on about exfoliating to help speed up the process, but using sugar and oil is probably a bit too rough for our faces. However aspirin is a lot kinder. you can make a very good face mask as follows: Take 1 x dispersible aspirin, 1 tspn honey and 1 tspn

milk. Crush the aspirin between two teaspoons and put into a small container, then add the honey and milk and mix well. The mixture is fairly sloppy, but apply to the face with a brush, avoiding the eye area and leave on for about 15/20 mins. After that time, add a second coat of the mixture and then rub over the skin in a circular motion for a few minutes. Thoroughly rinse with warm water pat dry and moisturise. your skin will be brighter and smoother - sadly, this is not suitable if you are allergic to aspirin. I recently remembered a good money saving tip which I will pass on to you: If you find that you have bits of old lipsticks left in the bottom of their cases, dig them out and put into an old lip gloss pot - or similar. you can buy tiny pots from Boots which are very suitable. Then melt the bits in the microwave, very gently, and mix the liquid with a cocktail stick until even in colour. Let them set in the pot and you have a brand new lipstick which you can apply with a lip brush from the pot. Finally, take care in the icy conditions, protect your skin with a good moisturiser, drink lots of water, and try to grab a bit of sunshine (if we get any) to keep up your vitamin D quota. If you need any advice, or fancy a treatment, please contact me on the number below.

s e n i t n e l a MyV St Valentine Who exactly St. Valentine was is shrouded in mystery. There seems to be 3 St. Valentines connected with 14th February, 2 of which could have been the same person! It is often believed however that ‘the’ St. Valentine was a priest from the 3rd century who lived in Rome. He had been caught marrying Christian couples in an era when early Christians were experiencing great persecution at the hands of the Romans. At that time Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns and there was difficulty recruiting soldiers, so the emperor Claudius II cancelled all marriages within the City of Rome – married men were less inclined to leave their loved ones… It is popularly believed that St. Valentine cut hearts from parchment, giving them to the soldiers, to remind them of God’s love and to encourage them to remain faithful Christians when they left for battle.

here are some free Valentine’s ‘gifts’ for that special day:

St. Valentine was arrested and imprisoned for defying the emperor’s decree. The legend unfolds that he was brought before Claudius who was impressed by him and attempted to convert him to Roman paganism. St. Valentine refused and countered this by trying to convert the Emperor to Christianity! He was thus sentenced to death.

 use as many forms of media as possible to say I love you: text, email, facebook, twitter, youtube etc.

According to tradition before his execution, while incarcerated, Valentine fell in love with a young woman who visited him. Some sources say she was the blind daughter (possibly named Julia) of his jailer Asterius. He is reported to have performed a miracle by giving her back her sight. His farewell message to his love Julia contained the now timeless closing: “From your Valentine.” The saint was executed on February 14 in around 270 A.D., Julia and her extended family of forty-six people became Christians soon after. His legend was cemented therefore for all the future generations of ‘loved ones’ to be inspired by.

EAST GRINSTEAD & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

The Lions are all volunteers whose aim is to raise funds to help individuals less fortunate than themselves – and have some fun while they are doing it. They are ordinary people who find the time to put something back into their community. East Grinstead Lions have been serving the community for 45 years and have helped to raise up to £1m. In recent years, the Club has helped finance trips to the uS for life changing operations for children within the district and has supplied defibrillators to local First Responders.

Like other Lions Clubs in the area this year they are supporting the Sussex air ambulance night flying operation. To make this all possible, the Lions run a number of fundraisers throughout the year. Their first event of 2013 ‘A Swim Night’, in aid of the local Alzeimers Club (among others), takes place at the Kings Centre on 23rd March starting at 6:30pm.The event is sponsored by locally owned East Grinstead McDonalds. Teams of 6 swim in relay for 25 minutes having gained sponsorship prior to the event. Funds raised are split 50/50 between Lions charities and participants own nominated

charity or club. For Entry forms call: Harry Horsburgh on 01342 312711. Lions club local charities will also benefit from Bob Smith’s testimonial football match taking place on Sunday March 24th ( at 2pm) when an EG Town team take on an Arsenal representative side at East Court. There will be plenty of other attractions for all the family. The local district, the club can and does make a difference. Feel like making a difference too? Grow Your Own Wildflower Meadow! Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Wildflower meadows have become increasingly rare in our countryside.

Seeding rates are usually 4 to 5 gms per square metre.

More recently there is a growing movement towards bringing such meadows back to life in our own gardens not only because it gives you a slice of the beauty of the wild, it also attract a wide diversity of birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife and this aids their survival.

Wildflower areas can be more or less created anywhere in the garden. Some of the mixes available include Butterfly meadow, Wetland, Shady, Late flowering, early flowering, Honeybee, or for a quick splash of colour try Cornfield Annual Mix.

Here are some practical steps to help get you started on your own meadow area:

Preparing the ground It is desirable to clear the ground of coarse grasses and other perennials such as dandelion, docks and thistles. These can be dug up, or if a larger area, sprayed with a glysophate based weed killer - when using weedkiller please follow the instructions on the container. Cultivate the ground by digging or rotavating. you are aiming to produce a tilth that the seed can be sown into. No fertilizer is required. The more impoverished the soil, the better. If possible, bring the sub soil to the surface burying the top soil as you go.

Wildflower seed is available as purely wildflower or a mix of grasses and a percentage of wildflower seed. If you are starting a wild flower meadow from scratch choose a grass and wildflower mix.

Converting Lawns Existing Lawns can also be turned into a wildflower meadow. To prepare you need to stop using fertliser and weedkiller and mow the lawn on a regular basis keeping the grass very short. you will need to do this for at least a year, possibly two. Scarifying the lawn will also help as this will expose patches of soil which the wild flower seed can utilise.

Sowing the seed

Maintaining your Meadow

Seed can be sown in the autumn or, especially on clay soils as the seed requires warmth and moisture, early March to May. To get an even distribution sow half the seed in one direction and the other half over the whole area again at right angles. Seed should be sown onto the surface then the area rolled using a roller. This ensures the seed has good contact with the soil. If the area is small, walking over the site is perfectly adequate.

At the end of the summer the meadow will need cutting after the wildflowers have set seed. The best tool for the cutting is a strimmer.

GIFT VOUCHER Imberhorne Lane Nursery Imberhorne Lane East Grinstead RH1 1TZ Phone: 01342 321 175

Cut again in the Spring Leave clippings for a few days then gather up and remove so as to prevent nutrients being returned to the soil.

50% off any plant at Imberhorne Lane Nursery Valid until 28th Februay 2013 Please present voucher when paying. One voucher per customer. Does not include special offers.

Local History Notes

East Grinstead Clockmakers by Dorothy Hatswell

Many of our forebears relied on the Public Clockmakers to know the accurate time of day; the importance of their role in the lives of the townspeople cannot be underestimated. East Grinstead has had many clockmakers over the years. The earliest mention of one in the town is in 16 3 when Richard Cornish was given a contract to repair the clock in St Swithuns Church for ten years. The church clock was important to many of the residents as most of them would not have owned their own clock. Cornish married Anne and they had a son, also Richard. At the baptism, Richard senior is described as a blacksmith. This combination of occupations was fairly common. Blacksmiths would often make clocks as they were skilled in forging metal. Richard senior seems to have been in demand because he is also found working in Edenbridge and possibly as far away as Battle. Another local clockmaker was Thomas Dadswell. He, together with his sons, Thomas and Edward, were well known as clockmakers in the area. They were closely associated through marriage with the Muddle family who mainly operated in Rotherfield, nr Crowborough. Thomas senior worked in East Grinstead for many years. His nephew, Thomas, son of his brother, Edward was his apprentice and came to East Grinstead in 1757. His son, yet another Thomas, is buried in St Swithuns churchyard, as is his widow, Sarah, who lived in Sackville College after her husband died. Nicholas Bodle was a local clockmaker from the 17th century in the town. The East Grinstead museum has a good example of a longcase clock made by him around 1700. The case is thought to be later, but the movement is original and still in working order. A very similar clock by the same maker is in Ightham Mote, a National Trust property just over the border in Kent. In 168 an “Imberhorne desmesne

(grounds) called the Mill Pond in East Grinstead” was passed to Bodle, whose Christian name was not given. The family name of Bodle as clockmakers appears across the area, including Reigate. Thomas Bodle is mentioned in 1816 for example, also John Bodle, “gentleman”, two years later. The “Poetical Directory of the Inhabitants of East Grinstead” written by Thomas Palmer November 1st 17 , states that; “If clocks or watches you would buy Fowle and Palmer can supply.” I do not think that Palmer was a watchmaker, merely that he sold them along with hundreds of other assorted items in his shop. The Fowles, however, were well known as watchmakers in the area for many years and through several generations. For instance, Thomas Fowle is mentioned as a watchmaker in Canterbury in 160 . The connection between him and the clockmakers in East Grinstead is not proven but the earliest mention of the family in East Grinstead is in 1700. There seem to have been close links with Fowles in uckfield. A later ‘Thomas Fowle’ was originally a clockmaker in uckfield, where he was born, but moved to East Grinstead in

176 . He married Ann Osborn and they had several children. Their oldest son, Richard, was born in 1772 while they were living in Middle Row, East Grinstead. Richard married a Judith Hockley in 1815 and they had four sons, Henry, John, William and Richard. The first three followed the family occupation of watchmakers. Henry set up a business in Redhill, William was apprenticed to his uncle in uckfield. Richard’s second son, John took over his father’s business in Middle Row. In the 1861 census John is shown as married to Charlotte with a young boy, John William, aged two and John’s mother, Judith, now a widow, living with them. John William Fowle, married Sarah Ann in 1881 and they had two children, a daughter, Edith, born in 18 2, and a son, Thomas, born the following year. John William was still in business in 18 1 in Middle Row, but ten years later is living in Portland Road, having retired in his early forties. In the 1872 Directory, W Weller is listed as a clock and watchmaker, “near the Moat Church”. Even more recently Edwin Arthur Harding, was apprenticed to an East Grinstead watchmaker in 18 , though which one is not clear. He gave it up to become a well known photographer in the town. A temporary exhibition at the East Grinstead museum which runs between February 6th and June 2nd 2013. entitled ”Clockwork”, gives a brief history of time keeping and highlights some local clockmakers and some of their clocks.

STANGER THAN FICTION PERHAPS? THE LINCOLN/KENNEDY CONNECTION Most know that both of these famous American presidents were assasinated, but here’s some interesting facts... • Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846 and elected President in 1860 • Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1 46 and elected President in 1 60 • History remembers both for their strong stand on Civil Rights • Both lost a child while in office • When assasinated Lincoln was in the Ford Theatre, Kennedy was in a Ford, named Lincoln • Both died on a Friday

• Both of their assasins were killed before being brought to trial, many conspiracy theories of these particular assasinations abound • Both Lincoln’s and Kennedy’s Successors were named ‘Johnson’, both were Southern Democrats • At the time of his death Kennedy’s secretary was named Evelyn Lincoln • Both presidents were accompanied by another couple, the male companion of which in both cases was also wounded by the assasin

A Legacy Realised

© Norman McBeath

Sir Archilbald MacIndoe was a world famous surgeon whose pioneering work in the field of plastic surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital literally gave life back to those horrifically burnt servicemen of WW II. Martin Jennings (pictured on the left) was approached by Jacquie Pinney of the Blond McIndoe Foundation to sculpt the statue of McIndoe for our town. With well-known and much- admired statues such as the one of John Betjeman at St. Pancras Station to his name, Martin seemed an obvious choice for the commission. At the time of asking, unknown to Jacquie a personal and poignant connection was yet to unfold. Here we find out more from Martin himself: What was your response when you were asked to sculpt McIndoe? Astonishment and delight. Sir Archibald McIndoe played an

important role in my family history. My own father, Michael Jennings, was very badly burned as a young man in the Second World War. He was discovered bandaged up in Birmingham hospital when McIndoe was making one of his country-wide searches for patients and was brought back to East Grinstead.

how did you come to know about McIndoe? My father mentioned him often enough for us to know how much he admired him. He felt indebted and grateful to McIndoe for what he had done for him. After some difficult years of treatment and recuperation my father had married and went on to become a successful headmaster with many children. When my father turned 80, he could hardly believe he’d lived so long. McIndoe had warned his patients that they might not have long lives after their terrible injuries but many did nonetheless. My father was not an airman and so could not be a member of the Guinea Pig Club (formed from McIndoe’s RAF patients) but many Guinea Pigs benefitted greatly from the mutual support offered by the club.

tell us what happened when you visited the queen Vic? Remarkably my father’s medical file was still in the hospital archive. I found pictures of him as a 23 year old before and after his treatment. It was a very moving experience and it was painful to see how injured he’d been. When I showed the pictures to my son he said “so that’s where I got my curly dark hair!” – by the time my father allowed more photos to be taken of him, many years after he was burned, that hair had gone so we’d never seen it before. What do you think the statue of McIndoe will do for the town? It will not only be a statue of the great man himself but a tribute to the men of the Guinea Pig Club as well. And I hope to be able to emphasise the way in which, during the war, the people of the town helped to rehabilitate those severely disfigured young men, by so openly welcoming them

into the community. So perhaps this will be an unusual statue – a tribute not only to a single individual but to a townspeople as well. East Grinstead should be proud of what it did for those servicemen in the 1 40s and perhaps the statue will help to inform newer residents of their town’s achievement. The statue is to be funded entirely by public donations and

FAIRTRADE EAST GRINSTEAD Fairtrade Action Group meets regularly to raise local awareness. It also celebrates Fairtrade Fortnight (25 February – 10 March in 2013). Being a Fairtrade town boosts civic pride and offers an opportunity to act and celebrate together. My school, Imberhorne, is striving to become a ‘Fairtrade School’ and has to meet goals set by the Foundation such as having a Fairtrade themed event every term. For instance, just before Christmas, Imberhorne hosted a Christmas market selling over £500 worth of Fairtrade gifts. Today, the phrase ‘Fairtrade’ is a fairly common word. However, wind back the clock 20 years and this wasn’t the case. Coming forward the movement has reached the point where the uK Fairtrade market is doubling in value every 2 years - in 2011 an estimated retail value of £1.2 billion. The uK is the world’s leading Fairtrade markets with more products and more awareness on the subject than anywhere else! Fairtrade is about community - local and global. Buying such goods directly benefits some of the world’s poorest farmers and workers. But what are East Grinstead and other towns doing about it? East Grinstead received Fairtrade Town status in 2005 and is now looking to renew its application; nearby Edenbridge, Lingfield and Dormansland, and Forest Row are also Fairtrade. There are over 500 such cities, towns and villages across the country. East Grinstead’s

Some Fairtrade products may cost a little more but I see this as the proper amount we should be paying for these products; any less and we are ripping off a grower in some far off corner of the world. In this day and age we shouldn’t be taking advantage of other human-beings. What we do, buy and even think here does affect people thousands of miles away, it can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. So please consider supporting the Fairtrade movement in our town as much as you can. By Henry Grub, 14, Pupil of Imberhorne

Forgotten Years Remembered good memories. Here are a couple of extracts: ‘We were a motley bunch of girls, supposedly ranging from 17 (bet they weren’t!) to 40. There were girls who had been servants, clerks, mannequins, in fact every walk of life.’

Born in Canada, daphne tester has lived in east Grinstead with her family for over 50 years. Daphne had often reminisced about her years in ‘service’ and vaguely mentioned her diaries of that time period to her daughter, Sue Edwards. While moving house in 2008 the diaries were unearthed – a full 5 years, ’41-’46, from Daphne’s days in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).

‘During my time here I was put on two separate charges. One for taking bread and margarine out of the cookhouse, which was strictly forbidden, and the other for not having my hat on. I could never get used to the beastly thing, and more than once I was told off for not having it on. On one occasion I was going across a field to the decontamination hut to have a bath, when some upstart of a Cpl who had just got her tapes decided to nab me. The penalty for this was three days ‘CB’ (confined to barracks).’ ‘I went to flicks with girls today, fol-

lowed by a drink at the Green Man. I met Nobby there and he asked me to join him for a ride. He is a marvellously cheery chap – always happy! We had a lovely time. He kisses nicely too!!’. Sue realised the diaries were just too good to simply show the family, so she asked her Mum to publish them as a book. Having convinced her, Sue’s challenge was on! Finally in November 2010 ‘Memoirs of a WAAF’ was published and required several print runs to meet demand! The book has piqued much interest both locally and further afield, with Sue giving many talks on her Mums behalf. After the success of the first book Sue is now working on the next edition covering 1 43, which will be published this year. See: http://www.vasussex.co.uk/booksmemoirs-of-a-waaf/

Looking at them afresh mother & daughter realised these diaries were a rare find. After 60 years, however, parts had become almost unfathomable. So Sue decided to type up the contents in order to preserve the history for the family. Daphne had written about good times and bad, the friends she made and boyfriends she’d had, with lots of humour interspersed throughout which made for many

“Just wanted to say a big thank you for our lovely kitchen. We admire it every time we go into it. You transformed it in such a short space of time too. The first thing our friends comment on is the shelf under the cupboard - they all want one too! The finishing touches really make it special and are even better than we hoped for. So thank you again for giving us just what we wanted.” Mike & Sue - East Grinstead
