Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

The Leap Year Rules Okay Why is February the poor cousin of all the months? Like many other notfully-justified historical occurrences, it suffered at the hands of someone’s ego. Roman emperor Caesar Augustus felt it was unfair that his predecessor Julius Caesar’s month, July (named Caesar Augustus after the great general) had 31 days. Augustus’ namesake-month of August had only 29 days... the injustice of it! So he decided to steal 2 days from February which originally had 30 days. Of all the things that happened during Caesar Augustus’ reign, this one probably passed with the least complaints.
impractical when it came to feast days (let alone birthdays, etc.). It was a convoluted solution to the problem and holidays began sliding into different seasons, this must have aggravated the general populace no end who probably needed (like we all do) regularity to the seasons. Thus Caesar ordered his astronomer, Sosigenes, to simplify things. He needed to base the calendar in use around the actual solar year - the time that the sun takes to return to the exact same position in the cycle of seasons; this is just over 365 days: 365.2422 days, give or take.
However, February has its own speciality by being the only month to be given an extra day every four years. As we know the 29th of the month comes round once every 4 years and it is indeed a special day.
The calendar was later refined further during the reign of Pope Gregory XIII (1582) because adding a day every single four years in fact overcompensates! Therefore there is not strictly speaking a leap year every four years, only 97 years out of every 400 Pope Gregory XIII years are leap years. The rule goes that any year that is divisible by 100 (but not by 400) is not a leap year. So the year 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 100
But what is the history of the 29th? Why a leap year?
Julius Caesar
Going back to the almighty Julius Caesar. When he first came to power, people observed a 355 day calendar, with an extra 22-day month every two years. As you can imagine, this was pretty
Sosigenes opted for the 365-day year with an extra day every four years to cover the extra hours. Hence the 29th February was born and regularity of the holidays of the seasons could proceed unhindered.

and 400) as was the year 1600. But the years 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, neither will 2100 be a leap year. Traditions grew up on this auspicious day and the 29th became a welcome respite for women from the domination of the world of men when the tradition grew up of woman being able to propose on that day. One theory goes back to the time when the leap year day of the 29th was not recognised by English law. The premise went that if the day had no legal status, it was acceptable to break with the convention of a man proposing. What other conventions were “justifiably” broken on that day, we can only guess at! Of course these days women proposing is far less taboo and it is most usually discussed before the question is even popped in any case - still the majority of proposing, as we know, is done by the man.
A precursor to the suffragette movement perhaps? Women proposing in a leap year is different around the world. For instance, in Denmark, it’s the 24th of February that proposals must take place and a Danish man who refuses the proposal must give the woman 12 pairs of gloves to wear to cover their embarrassment of not having an engagement ring! In Finland, it is not gloves but fabric for a skirt. We’re not sure of the reasoning here but probably just a little something to make up for the heart break... I’m sure either of these gifts were not gratefully received! In Greece a whole new tradition arose that marriage in a leap year was considered unlucky, this lead many couples to avoid it. No doubt these superstitions are rarely regarded these days but I would still conjecture that slightly less marriages occur in Greece in such years...
This tradition of the 29th is also disputed to be attributable to St Bridget in the 5th Century. She is said to have complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose (sigh...). St Patrick thus St Bridget gave women a single day during a leap year to pop the question. Yet another theory is the story that Queen Margaret of Scotland brought into law a setting of fines for men who turned down marriage proposals put to them on a leap year. Sceptics have pointed out that Margaret was five years old at the time and living far away in Norway! So this seems unlikely.
The 29th February 1504 certainly lent a helping hand to Christopher Columbus who purportedly used his knowledge of the solar system and movement of stars to his advantage. The story goes that during his final trip to the West Indies. After months of being stranded in Jamaica, relations with the indigenous population broke down and they refused to continue to help him and his crew with food and provisions. Columbus, knowing a lunar eclipse was due on the 29th, gathered the native chiefs and forewarned them that God was going to punish them for their lack of assistance by painting the moon red. Then during the eclipse, he said that God would withdraw his punishment if they starting co-operating again i.e. giving him the supplies he needed. The panicked chiefs agreed to give him what he wanted and the moon began emerging from its shadow. They say that knowledge is power and this, though unfair, is a good demonstration!
The tradition in practice is not thought to have become commonplace until the 19th Century when some daring women took fate into their own hands.
The chance of being born on a leap day is one in 1,461. So Happy Birthday to any readers who are born on this most special of days.

East Grinstead the Market Town Local History Notes by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum East Grinstead Museum has been in Cantelupe Road now for ten years. We relocated from our original premises in East Court when we were given Heritage Lottery Funding to build a more conveniently situated museum which allowed us better control over the environment for the artefacts on display or in store. Although we did not open to the public until September 1st 2006, the-behind-the-scenes crew, led by our, then, curator, Rachel Hurst, were hard at work on transferring all the items and arranging the new displays within the new building. Our latest exhibition, which opened on January 13th and runs until May 22nd is named, Markets and Fairs in East Grinstead. The present museum stands on the site of the livestock market which was held in Cantelupe Road for many years. This made me think about what else had happened here, going back to the founding of East Grinstead as a new town in the C12th. The land on which the museum now stands was then part of two of the portlands, or gardens, behind each of the original houses. These were the houses directly to the left of the church. The occupants would probably have been workers in leather or in one of the many timber related trades. The
10
portlands would have provided them, and their families, with vegetables and fruit and protein in the shape of a pig or chickens. The location of the town, halfway between the capital and the south coast, was chosen originally because the necessity of quick communication for the Norman lords who often needed to return

to France and their interests there. This, over the years, became less and less the reason for travelling but others found the convenience of having a halfway house useful. And regular coaches began plying along the, now, established route. Once East Grinstead had become a staging post for more general

travellers between London and the coast, coaching inns opened to provide them with food and drink and perhaps a bed for the night. The coachman would need to either rest or change horses. The stable yard behind the Crown Inn (now the Bar Kuba) was where their horses were kept. The livestock market had, for centuries, been held in the actual High Street, and indeed, even into the early C20th, horses and cattle could been seen there. In 1884,William Rudge, the auctioneer, started a livestock market in the stable yard which lasted for nearly a hundred years. On the exact footprint, now occupied by this museum, the later addition of a building on the market site, was used as an auction room. During the Second World War, because of food rationing, there were regulations issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which had to be strictly adhered to. After the war ended the market continued. The pens and enclosures stretched down towards and along, Cantelupe Road. Thursday was market day. From early in the morning cattle started arriving in large specialist lorries. Sheep and pigs, being smaller, were mostly brought in by the farmers themselves, as were the rabbits and chickens. Day-old chicks came by rail and had to be picked up from the station, often by taxi. Occasionally small items of farm equipment were also accepted for sale. The buyers soon arrived to look over the pens and decide what
12
they intended to bid for later. The start of the auction was signalled by a hand bell, rung at 11am. Pigs were the first to be auctioned, followed by calves, poultry and then sheep. The cattle were last. They were paraded in the ring next to their shed. The weight of each animal was announced along with a suggested starting price. Bidding followed, either by a nod or a wave of the hand. This latter method led to the auctioneer warning the children, to whom the animals were a regular attraction during holiday times, not to wave at the auctioneer or his clerk as they might end up buying something! The auctioneer’s clerk stood beside him noting the buyer’s names and the prices paid. The
living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk
clerk then returned to the office and issued the tickets which confirmed the people who were entitled to collect their purchases. No-one could obtain their ticket until the clerk was satisfied about payment. On Friday mornings the money was banked and the vendors’ cheques were made out. The livestock auction was over for another week. Now the site is used for car parking for the museum volunteers and for various offices around. The Bar Kuba’s customers also use the area to park their cars, a far cry from the horses once stabled there. The stables may be forgotten but the livestock market is commemorated in its address, the “Old Market Yard”.

Computer Tips: Fradulent Email & Scams There are many stories of cyber attacks in the news affecting governments, companies and individuals. What can you do to stay safe? Apart from interest from the major governments of the world and possibly your neighbour, you are unlikely to be the target of a directed attack. You will already have software on your computer to protect you from the usual crowd of opportunistic assaults including malicious websites and obvious email-based attacks. There is more that you can do here such as blocking adverts, profiling websites and being jolly careful what software you run. However, the protection you install will not prevent two common approaches: fraudulent email and the venerable telephone scam. Is that email you received genuine? The easiest test that catches most email fraud is to take a careful look at the sender’s address, particularly after the @ sign. For example, if a Paypal email does not come from …@paypal.co.uk, @e.paypal.co.uk or …@paypal.com, be very wary. Similarly, if your friend sends you a one-liner with a link, pause for a moment. Check it with your friend. Is clicking
16
on that link worth the cost of calling for computer support? The telephone-based scam, by contrast, can be fun if you have a few spare minutes to chat. It starts with an unsolicited telephone call claiming to be from a well-known company such as Microsoft. The pleasant voice warns that your computer is at risk, infected or worse. These calls can be convincing. When they offer to help solve your ‘issues’ your problems truly begin. To avoid this scam, remember that the telephone call is unsolicited and hence highly suspicious. Bluntly, do not give a stranger access to your computer. If in doubt, end the call and seek independent advice. If you find yourself caught out, the first step is still to end the call. Then immediately unplug your router. Then keep your computer off the Internet until it has been checked independently to make sure you are safe. RL Computer Solutions See ad on page opposite

Things to do this February 2016 is a leap year which means February has an extra day. For those of you with a birthday on the 29th you know what you’ll be doing; a celebration to make up for the three parties you’ve missed! Perhaps some of you ladies will be planning to propose marriage, something which traditionally women can only do in a leap year. But what about the rest of us? How can we fill this month with that extra day? After a month of scheduled works, the Bluebell Railway resumes services, so why not treat yourselves to a gentle steam through the country 22
side and during the half term holidays, children can travel for a pound. There’s plenty going on at Chequer Mead Theatre and for those days when you’d rather stay inside, the museum has children’s activities and a special exhibition on East Grinstead markets. Talking of markets, please support your local producers who will brave the cold to bring you the Farmers’ Market every Thursday. Plenty happening locally to keep everyone busy. It’s Valentines Day soon and a chance for us to show our other (possibly better) halves how much we love and appreciate them. Love encompasses many emotions and is a fabulous word. The Ancient Greeks however were keen to differentiate between the various ‘types’ of love. We take a little look:
Philia was seen as a deep but non-intimate bond, as between close friends, family members or a bond forged by soldiers as they fought alongside eachother in battle. It implies that it must be mutual. Ludus describes a more playful affection found in fooling around or flirting. It can also indicate a
love that ‘won’t settle down’ and ‘moves on’ very quickly... Pragma, as the word implies, is a more pragmatic/mature love that develops over a long period of time between long-term couples that rely on eachother and share their lives together. It involves goodwill and commitment, compromise and those who have common goals. Agape is a more generalised love, it can be love for all of humanity. It implies more self-sacrifice and a generous love. Eros is literally the love of beauty. It is a highly sensual, passionate style of love. And is all about “chemistry.” and falling in love at first sight. Though interesting, I’m unsure if the Greeks had it right, perhaps just ‘Love’ is a simpler, better word to describe what we all feel and hopefully especially on February 14th.
Quotes “Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.” Oscar Wilde 26

Reaching for the Stars Each year the Royal Astronomical Society recognises significant achievement in the fields of astronomy and geophysics through its awards. Last month the Patrick Moore Medal for Education 2016 was awarded to Sackville’s Curriculum Leader for Science, Steve Bush. This award is particularly poignant because Patrick Moore was, of course, an East Grinstead resident for a good part of his life. Here is a ‘Q & A’ with Steve Bush about the Sackville Observatory and the background to this award being given: When did you arrive to take on this role at Sackville School and what is your background? I started teaching at Sackville in 1998 having taught science in Ringmer, East Sussex for a couple of years. When I graduated from Sussex University I was keen to share my love of physics with others, so teaching seemed the perfect choice. As I grew up in Bolton, the students laughed at my Lancashire accent but now it has almost disappeared! What did you envision when you became head of the Science Department? I became Curriculum Leader of Science in 2004 when we became an engineering college. I was keen to use our additional funding to provide our students with a huge variety
28
of experiences that would open their eyes to the exciting world of science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM). As part of this, we became a Leading Space School, one of only a handful in the country to be recognised for their work in space education. This enabled us to buy resources and equipment such as solar telescopes and meteorite sets, and spurred us on to enter competitions such as Mission Virgin Galactic. Taking our winning team to New Mexico to watch Spaceshiptwo fly whilst chatting to Buzz Aldrin and Richard Branson which was a real highlight! So far how has your goals for Science teaching at Sackville become a reality? A large number of students

continue studying in science in our thriving sixth form, where their achievements in some courses, such as A-Level physics, were the best in the county last year. We also had great success guiding students to and through the regional heats of the National Science and Engineering competition in the summer, where two groups won awards. One finalist, Nick Barham, is now in the national finals with his project modelling the discovery of exoplanets - a planet that orbits a star other than the sun. Seeing students enjoying science and achieving their best is a real thrill, and I feel privileged to be part of this. How did you come to receive this prestigious award? One of our ex-students, Dr Katie

Joy, went on to be an expert in meteorites and returned to open our new observatory in 2012. She contacted the school to suggest I met the criteria for the medal which is awarded by the Royal Astronomical Society, of which we are both fellows. I’m very grateful to Katie and those at school who felt I deserved the medal, made even more special knowing that Sir Patrick lived in the town. What was the criteria? Were you up against many others? The medal is awarded for a particularly noteworthy contribution to astronomy or geophysics by secondary school level teachers. I have no idea how many people are nominated each year, but there is only one winner each year and so to even be nominated is a great honour. Did it take you by surprise? What was your reaction and the reaction of the school community as a whole?
It was a real shock! I had no idea I was nominated, so finding out I won was a huge surprise. What has also stunned me has been the response on social media. Our observatory facebook entry (www.facebook. com/SackvilleObservatory) has reached nearly 1700 people, whilst over 300 shared the story when it broke online. To think that many people might wish to share this news is very humbling indeed. From here, what is your next strategic plan for the department? Science will always be exciting and inspiring as long as we have the best teachers, we’ve worked hard to ensure our school has superb science teachers who continue to work with students and their parents to achieve great things. Congratulations to Steve Bush and to Sackville School’s Science Department.

A New World Record for a New Year Phil said, ‘we originally built a motorbike that set the record as the UK’s quickest electric motorcycle. We were, fairly soon after, beaten by our main rivals (Kingston University) but rather than challenge again for the UK record I decided to go a step further and try and beat the quickest bikes in America and set a world-record’. Former East Grinstead resident Phil Edwards, who now lives in Uckfield, intends to speed into the record books with the world’s fastest electric motorbike. Phil is the director for the ‘Fast Charge’ project which is the UK leader in low-carbon automotive technology and world-beating motorsport. The project is currently working on developing a bike to break the world record of 6.94 seconds by travelling a quarter of a mile at 200mph in six seconds with 1000 horsepower and zero emissions from a standing-start. Phil plans to see the bike make its debut on a race track in the very near future.
Generous Phil will donate six per cent of all Supporter Club subscriptions and 10 per cent of all merchandise sales to national charity Canine Partners which celebrated their 25th anniversary last year. This charity trains dogs to perform tasks such as opening and closing doors, undressing,
Phil already holds the title of the UK’s fastest electric motorcycle having designed and built one in 2011. In the last three years he’s planned and fundraised to build a new bike to take on the American constructors and bring the world record to the UK.

pressing buttons, retrieving items, unloading washing machines, taking card and cash from ATMs and other everyday tasks that disabled people find difficult, painful or impossible to do for themselves. Here Phil gives his personal reason: ‘Our project gets a lot of publicity and I wanted to reflect some of that to support a charity that I really felt was doing incredibly worthwhile work. I found out about Canine Partners and met them to understand more about their work. I was amazed at the work they are doing to train assistance dogs and the great

people that work with them. I now donate a percentage of our merchandise sales and supporters club subscriptions to them as well as taking collecting boxes and leaflets along to the events we get invited to’. Kay Gilmore, South East Regional Fundraiser for Canine Partners, said: ‘What Phil is aiming to achieve is phenomenal and we are grateful to him for allowing us to be a part of his journey. His help will enable us to transform even more people’s lives through our amazing assistance dogs. ‘Canine Partners doesn’t receive any government funding and relies solely on donations and legacies so it really will make a difference.” We asked Phil what the hardest part about preparing for the challenge is: ‘Technically it is a very difficult challenge and the more we get into the detail of it, the more problems we are finding that need to be overcome. Then again, we’re trying to go one better than anyone else in the world so it won’t be simple, but
the dream of being the best, and showcasing UK engineering, drives us on. ‘As well as supporting charities, one other thing that I’m really passionate about is showing how exciting careers in engineering and technology are. I give talks to schools and colleges to inspire youngsters to consider a career in engineering as the UK desperately needs more of them.’ The motorbike which broke the UK record for the fastest electric motorcycle spent 2014 at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu as part of their special exhibition ‘Record Breakers’ – for
Britain and the hell of it. And what does the future hold for the widespread use of the electric bike? Phil had this to say: ‘The electric bike market has been a bit slow to take off, mainly because batteries are still quite expensive. Having said that the electric-assist bicycles (pedelecs) are really taking off. The products, whilst not really getting any cheaper, are improving in quality and performance all the time. It’s only a small step from taking the parts found on the highest quality pedelecs to make components for a small motorcycle or moped, so there is certainly technology coming through that will make this possible in only a couple of years. We are in fact working on a prototype electric bike that fits between a bicycle and a moped at the moment’.
