Guttering Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Campaign for a new Sports Ha

East Grinstead Living is backing Imberhorne School’s campaign for a new Sports Hall. This is the first of several features we will be publishing during the course of the year to help get their Headteacher Jon Ford message heard. The importance of this ambitious project for the town’s children cannot be overstated, the wider community will also benefit greatly. Here we ask Headteacher, Jon Ford, to expound on the project.

Clearly, this creates a squeeze of the facilities; activities are pushed outdoors or even cancelled in poor weather. Movements in dance lessons are limited because of risk of injury on the hard wood floor of the school hall. Our vision is to be able to offer a wide range of indoor PE/sport activities; plus an up-to-date Drama & Dance Studio, designed as a performance venue. We have some amazingly talented students at Imberhorne as anyone who saw the October performance of “Oliver” will testify to. The new structure will give the space & time for them to expand upon their abilities. The “Outstanding” (Ofsted 2010) Sixth Form has undergone considerable expansion over the last few years. This has put strain

Imberhorne students love their sport and we know how sport can help develop teamwork, confidence, resilience, leadership and many other skills and attributes. Whilst we have some good facilities for outdoor sport there are very limited indoor facilities. At upper school, which serves over 900 students, we have only a small gymnasium for indoor PE, sport and dance. All students in their GCSE years have 2 hours of general PE each week; about 150 students study GCSE PE; 2 groups follow a GCSE course in Dance… and the list goes on. | January 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Imberhorne Sports Hall continued on teaching accommodation in the school so we plan to build 2 new classrooms within the sports hall building. This enables practical & theory space to be side-by-side, conducive to more flexible teaching for our GCSE & A Level PE students. We want to offer after-school indoor sports activities through the winter months. With local sports clubs these ‘extended’ school opportunities can be generated which will dovetail into the community. Local clubs and societies will be invited to maximise the use of the building at evenings & weekends. East Grinstead is well known to be a town that loves sport and appreciates the performing arts. This project will add greatly to both these fields with facilities available not only for children but for the community as a whole. Our fundraising campaign has a target of £200,000. The school will contribute what it can from the school budget (we all know budgets are tight… )

without jeopardising education. So far £70,000 has been raised through a variety of events. A wine-tasting evening on 17th March (date TBC) is planned and on Friday 1st June we plan to hold a special Diamond Jubilee sponsored walk for the whole school and “Imberthon” – a marathon relay event. Students taking part will receive a commemorative Diamond Jubilee Medal. A “walk of fame” brick path will come to fruition, leading to the Sports Hall entrance. Each brick will be engraved with the name chosen by the person who buys the brick in thanks to their generous donation. We’re asking local businesses to support us by making a donation. Plaques will be mounted in the foyer in recognition & acknowledgement of each contributor. When we started out on this project it was a hope and an aspiration. Despite being an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ School we are now the only secondary school in West Sussex not to have a sports hall. By September 2013 with everyone’s help we hope this will have been put right and some of the best students in West Sussex will have the newest sports facilities in the county. If we invest in our children, we invest in our future. So please help make this vision a reality whichever way you can. By Jon Ford

Baileys Cheesecake

! e m o h t a s i h t y r T

Recipe by Chef

Dean Samsudin

at the Brambletye Hotel

A good way of using up any Baileys left over from Christmas, this simple recipe will go down well.

Ingredients

Method

100g (3 ½ oz) butter, melted

1. To make the base, melt butter and mix with crushed digestives. Line a 8/9”spring cake tin with the biscuits (or we use individual moulds about 3” round at the Brambletye).

240g (8 ½ oz) crushed digestives

2. Next, whisk the cream cheese, baileys and icing sugar together to blend.

600g (1lb 5oz) cream cheese 25ml (1 fl oz) Baileys 100g (3 1/2oz) icing sugar 300ml (10 ½ fl oz double cream) ¼ tsp cocoa powder

3. Separately, and this is important, whisk the double cream to soft peaks, then gently fold into the cream cheese and baileys mix. Finish with ¼ tsp cocoa powder to give a nice colour. 4. Top your biscuit base with the mixture, then chill for 1-2 hours. 5. Optional: garnish with strawberry, mint and a chocolate sauce for a dessert the whole family will enjoy.

sons, his first book is based on the family’s first UK adventure in their faithful black car, Zippy. Hailing from Australia, the boys had never seen a castle before let alone stay in one.‘These were the things in story books and tales’, recalls Jarrad. ‘It was a huge adventure watching the boys take absolute delight in what some might see as everyday things now’. Told through the eyes of Monkey, an affectionate nickname for Jarrad’s son, here is an excerpt:

Zippy’s our friend, our faithful black car, He takes us all over - from near to far. He’s number one, though ever so tiny, My little police car - all black and shiny! Beautifully illustrated, The Adventures of Munch & Monkey is already proving popular with adults and children alike. Recommended for children aged between 3 – 6 years, ‘The Adventures of Munch and Monkey: A Weekend Adventure’ is available now at all leading bookstores and online at Amazon.

History Notes: Residents who left a mark on our town

Gilbert D’Aquila: The Man Who Laid the Foundations of Our Town By Dorothy Hatswell

To start this series on local residents who left their mark on the town, I am going to talk about the man who began it all. Gilbert D’Aquila was the grandson of Engeloulf de l’Aigle who came over from France in 1066 with William of Normandy. D’Aquila and l’Aigle are variations of the same name meaning “eagle”. This could have referred to an emblem on their coat of arms or indicated they were particularly sharp-eyed. William brought with him hundreds of landowners and nobility from Normandy. They supplied him with money, ships, horses and men. After defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings on October 14th 1066, William swept through Sussex laying waste to the county on his way to London where he was crowned. To reward his followers and to ensure that his route to France was secure in case the necessity for reinforcements should be needed in the early days, William gave them lands in Sussex. He divided the county from south to north into six strips called “rapes”. They were Chichester, Arundel, Bramber, Lewes, Pevensey and Hastings. Every rape contained a harbour or major river and a castle was subsequently built in each one. East Grinstead fell into the Rape of Pevensey.

Gilbert D’Aquila continued Initially, it was awarded to Robert, Earl of Mortain, William’s half brother. However, after Robert’s death his son, William, rebelled against Henry I. He was dispossessed of his lands and they were given to Gilbert D’Aquila in the very early C12th. Gilbert seems to have taken a serious interest in his holdings. He built well known Michelham Priory and the church of All Saints in the nearby village of Laughton. At about the same time Gilbert decided to build a new town on the ridge near the church of St Swithun’s in the north of his estates. In the Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086 to establish the extent and value of his kingdom, East Grinstead is only a “hundred”. This was a Saxon division of land and it contained several manors and ”una ferraria” or iron-working site. There was no actual settlement named East Grinstead. From St. Swithun’s name it can be reasonably inferred that it was built soon after 999. The real Saint Swithun was Bishop of Winchester. At that time, important people would be buried inside the church. The more important, the nearest the altar. Lesser mortals were buried outside. St Swithun was a very humble man and requested to be buried in the churchyard. However, he was buried near the altar as his congregation thought befitted a man of his standing. For forty days and nights the heavens opened and tremendous storms raged around the town. They did not stop until St. Swithun was reburied outside as he had wished. This miracle would have made a powerful impression on everyone and the story soon spread all over England, so who better to have your church dedicated at that time than him. St. Swithun’s would have served as a focal point for the area for many years before Gilbert arrived. Everyone from the surrounding manors would have worshipped at the church. They would have brought their local disputes to the moot courts held there, sold their produce at the informal gatherings and, no doubt, exchanged gossip. This, together with the church being sited on a sandstone

ridge running west to east, made it an obvious choice for a settlement (last to become East Grinstead). It was carefully laid out on both sides of a broad street, which allowed space for markets, fairs and the passage of sheep and cattle. The houses or “burgages” were a standard thirty three feet wide, with long gardens called “portlands” running for some 300 yards behind them. The houses were timber framed, infilled with wattle and daub and probably thatched. Inside was one large open space in which the whole family would live. In the centre of the earth floor, a fire would burn to provide heat and a means of cooking. The smoke escaped through a hole in the roof. Later a loft might be built over part of the area to provide a sleeping chamber for the master and mistress. Many of the residents would be tradesmen and would carry on their business at the front of the building. Again, a refinement would be to partition off a small section to devote to their trade. They could be carpenters or work in one of the leather trades, making shoes or saddles and harnesses for horses. On the land behind the dwelling a variety of fruit and vegetables were grown to provide for the family. Peas and beans were staples in their diet. Cabbages, onions swedes would give variety. Apple and cherry trees would be planted. Chickens provided eggs and meat. Many would keep a pig which was killed and salted in the Autumn. Beehives made honey. The water supply was not always pure so most people, including children, drank small beer, brewed from the locally grown barley. This would be bartered for from the local farmers in return for some vegetables or honey. The reasons for Gilbert to build a town will never be known. Perhaps he was familiar with the area as it was about half way between London and the coast and would provide him and other travellers with a convenient resting place. Whatever his reasons the past and present residents of the town are grateful that he laid the foundations of this pleasant market town.

Billy Brown

Telling us how it is

When I met Hartfield resident, Bill Brown, at the East Grinstead Arts Festival last summer, 2 minutes of chatting to him was enough to decide to buy his book, Billy Brown, I’ll Tell Your Mother. I decided to read a couple of chapters to see if it was any good and not bother to finish if it became a chore. A week later it was done and dusted – no mean feat for a mother of 3 young children. Often real life childhood stories are strewn with tragedy (the writer being the unwilling victim) yet this was no sob story. It was an uplifting, treasured and honest account of a young boy living in post-war London. With mawkish, gushing & tearful entertainment seemingly the mantra of the moment, Billy Brown was refreshingly sincere and true to life. Not all rosy but full of fun, best summed up as the opposite of a depressing read. Gaining popularity through grass roots, even when I mentioned it to the bookshop owner in Salcombe, Devon she had something good to say. I knew that when it came to interview Bill I was going to hear some gems of wisdom that would be perfect for this month of resolutions – January.

Bill starts, “My mum was the most wonderful lady (he admits everyone says this but it’s true). As you can tell from the book she used to collect sayings: “Never be afraid to try anything. The worse thing that can happen is that you’re back where you started” (and another), “Never be afraid to ask anyone anything, the worst they can say is: b**ger off”, that’s it. So I’ve never been afraid of trying anything’. Thus his foray into the writing world… His daughter nagged him for years to write his life story, ‘Before you can’t remember anymore,’ she said - though I can’t imagine that happening. At nearly 70 Bill’s memory’s as keen as the eyes of an eagle and his mind is as full of energy, ‘ age is a state of mind… your body might get a bit more tired but your brain shouldn’t’, he said. Submitting a 5000 word entry to the Alan Titchmarsh writing competition he came second out of just over a 1000 entries. Approached by a publisher, he signed a 3 book deal. The second book, Billy Brown, If Your Mother Only Knew is about coming of age in the days of Elvis & Teddy boys. The third will be about his time in the fire service. Concurrently penning

Bill and his mum

a fictional novel based on the art world (Bill owned 4 art galleries after retiring from the fire service), he’s got the writers bug good and proper! Bill said, ‘There’s been fan mail from all over the world. One lady was so thankful for reminding her what a wonderfully simple childhood she had’. Often asked what the greatest change he’s

seen through his life, he admits some changes are good and some are bad: ‘It’s difficult to simplify but I will say the worst thing that’s happened to society is the drugs... by far…The biggest change is respect. Respect for elders, for your parents, for the police, respect for other people’s property. When I was a little boy (as you know from the book) I was a terror, a rascal. But if my local policeman told me to get on home I would go, because if I didn’t he would have told my father... he lived in our flats! You did as you were told.

or you’re not…’ Bill states. ‘In all professions there are some who want to do the profession and some who come along for the ride’. He served 21 years in the fire service; for the last 15 he was in charge of a specialised rescue unit who don’t fight fires but rescue people in machinery, cranes & even firemen who get into trouble. ‘You have to volunteer to do it (you can’t be forced) and it’s serious. By the end of I was getting a bit saturated, it’s like being at war... dealing with death and destruction every day. But I loved that job’.

‘I might sound like an old grump but you’ve seen all these things. If only we had old values back, it would make such a difference’.

He pulls out a book that his partner Jane came across called: “Great Fires of London” It’s literally strewn with pictures of Bill back in the day.

Talking about his time in the fire service it becomes obvious that whatever Bill does, he does it well. As a fireman he became the most highly qualified man in the service, admittedly taking even obscure courses so he could never be in the position of being told, ‘oh you can’t do so and so, it shouldn’t be done that way… etc.’ Thus another gem of wisdom spilt out: ‘if you’re going to do something... then do it to the best of your ability’ and ‘I’ll only do something if I know I can do it well’.

Among his awards he received the Chief Officer’s commendation for bravery for what Bill thought was an uncanny reason: A drunk was throwing tiles at the police from a roof, he’d slipped down and was hanging from the guttering, if he’d let go that would have been it. Bill dragged him up, still kicking and lashing out, tied thick rope around him, slung him over his shoulder and got him down to safety. When he was untied, the drunk legged it, the police in chase. They were impressed by Bill’s non-chalant fearlessness and recommended the award.

Such things are easy enough to say but Bill puts his money where his mouth is. He started at Battersea Firestation, moved to busier Brixton (his home turf), and finally got to, at the time, the busiest fire station in the world: North Kensington. ‘Because you’re either going to be a fireman

As a retired fireman I asked him about his thoughts on Health & Safety: ’Health and Safety is a good thing but it’s been overdone’. He goes on to explain how he came out of his local supermarket, there was a commotion in

Bill as a young lad

the car park. An elderly lady had lost control of her car, it had turned sideways on her as she was getting out. The door was jammed against the lamppost and crushed her ankle. She was trapped and couldn’t move. Bill told the supermarket people that if they just lifted the back of the car and pulled it away from the lamppost she would be freed and they could get her out. But ‘oh no’ said they, Health and Safety regulations. Luckily an off-duty fireman showed up and he and Bill moved the car and got her out. ‘What many people don’t realise is that old people can go into shock, that can be the killer, not the injury itself. So you have to move fast’. In an age of ‘cover-yourbackside’ this is a refreshingly different attitude. Here’s another gem: ‘You learn as you get older (it’s very rare that a young person will learn it) just how precious life is. Life is so precious. Some young people throw it away

by taking drugs. No matter what your status is in life, you can enjoy it. Even when you get up in the morning, watch the sunrise… it costs you nothing. To look at a sunrise or sunset it’s free. Jane (his partner) grew up in Hastings. Whenever we go to a coastal place she pauses for a moment just to smell the sea… and it’s free…. A walk on the Ashdown Forest, it’s free’. He continued: ‘I mean children are going to become zombies… If they’re not looking at the

TV they’re looking at another screen. Get away from the bloody television… There’s a report in London that there’s an increase of cases of Ricketts (caused by sun deprivation), they’re stuck in doors all day… Why don’t they go out and play… ‘Don’t I sound like an old grump!’ Well I’m not that old yet (I hope) and it sounds like grounded sense to me. I realised the biggest impression Bill made is that when you talk to him, it’s just simply him. He hasn’t attached shades of others personalities onto himself. This is rarer than people might think. I left the interview with a spring in my step and an upbeat feeling, looking forward to the next book… So Happy Resolution forming! Readers can meet Bill Brown in person when he does his next book signing at Waterstones in Crawley (date to be confirmed). Billy Brown, I’ll Tell Your Mother is available in all good bookshops & Amazon.

East Grinstead Meridian Rotary Club:

An Update

The 31 men & lady members of The Rotary Club of East Grinstead Meridian are now enjoying a New Year break after much fun and fundraising over the past few months. Earlier in the year they achieved, with the help of local schools, their target to send £16,000 towards the Rotary International’s project to eradicate polio from our world. The World Health Organisation are looking towards 2014 to see this horrid disease finally defeated using the £3 million raised under this initiative to cover the costs of their immunisation programme. In September, the club held its annual charity golf day at Lingfield Park and raised over £5,000. In November, a horse race night at Imberhorne Lower School raised £2,000 shared between the town’s special needs Opportunity Play Group and Help for Heroes. In early December, with the support of Sainsbury’s, the Club hosted their Rotary Young Chef competition. Under the watchful eye of the judges, including Alexander House Hotel head chef, Mark Budd and the Town Mayor, John Saull, nine 15 year-old local students each produced a 2-course meal for under £10. The winner was Madison Cahill-Smith with Kate Robinson runner-up. Both come from Lingfield Notre Dame School and will represent the town at the Rotary District semi-finals in February. At the same time, 15 year-old, Sackville School student, Matt Hill was competing in the World Tap Dance Championships in Germany representing England. Learning that Matt would welcome some help to assist with the high costs, Meridian Rotary stepped in with some financial support. The reward was to hear Matt is now the Junior Solo World Champion, winning the gold medal and he also won silver and bronze medals respectively for the boys’ group and formation dances. This is something the whole town can be proud of. Supporting school children is an important part of Rotary’s outreach. £1,000 was given to local primary schools to help send children on those important residential trips when their families were finding the full cost too much. The Christmas collections around the town kept everyone active during December. It started with the lighting of the Christmas tree in the High Street. Then Meridian Rotarians joined other volunteers to distribute over 300 gifts to local residents who were in need of seasonal cheer. A dinner was arranged for the members of the local blind club… so, never a dull moment. In a typical year £14,000 is raised through various events and then used to help deserving causes. The majority goes to local needs but international assistance is not overlooked. Being a Rotarian is definitely worthwhile and a great way of having fellowship. We meet on a Wednesday night and if you would like a taste, contact the Club President, John Ellis on president@meridianrotary.co.uk or see our web site www.meridianrotary.co.uk. It could be fun! A Healthy Recipe sponsored by East Grinstead Children & Family Centres

Pasta ratatouille bake A lovely pasta bake that the whole family will love, with herbs, delicious vegetables and a cheesy topping. Serves: 4 adults Time: 1 hour 15 minutes Ingredients

Food for thought for the New Year

RING OUT THE OLD, RING IN THE NEW By Alfred Lord Tennyson, 1850

200g dried pasta (macaroni or similar) 2 tbsp olive oil 2 medium onions, chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped Small bunch of fresh oregano (or 1tsp dried) Small bunch of fresh basil (or 1tsp dried) 4 chopped fresh medium tomatoes 1 large courgette, sliced into rounds 200g broad beans 125ml vegetable stock made from ½ a low salt stock cube Pepper to taste A handful of grated cheese

Ring out the old, ring in the new,

Method:

Ring in redress to all mankind.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) or gas mark 4.

Ring, happy bells, across the snow; The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor,

Ring out false pride in place &

2. Cook the pasta according to the instructions on the packet and drain. Meanwhile, heat the oil in another saucepan, add the onions and then the garlic and cook slowly until they are tender and golden.

blood,

3. Stir in the herbs and tomatoes and simmer for 20 minutes, then add the courgette, beans, water and pepper to taste and simmer for 5 minutes.

Ring in the common love of good.

4. Combine the pasta and vegetables, place in a baking dish and sprinkle the cheese on top, then cover and cook for 30–35 minutes.

And ancient forms of party strife,

Cook’s tips Use strong Cheddar so you don’t need to use as much. Reduced-fat cheese is good too. Use full-fat cheese if you are cooking for under-twos. Red peppers also work well in this dish – add them with the courgette. East Grinstead has two Children and Family Centres, situated at Blackwell School and in East Grinstead Library. The centres offer support to parents and activities for children under 5 years old. For information, advice and guidance on early parenting or to find out more about our services call East Grinstead Blackwells Children and Family Centre 01342 332992 or email: east.grinstead.c&fc@westsussex.gov.uk

The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right,

Ring out a slowly dying cause,

Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweet manners, purer laws. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Want to experience a new style of hairdressing?

1

Tell us about your team. Our longest standing member is Marie, she came from France six years ago with the idea of staying for just 6 months. She is an amazing Hairdresser, in high demand and consistently the busiest stylist in the salon. Emily also joined us before we moved here. When she arrived she was just out of hairdressing college and a little shy. Throughout the 4 years she has blossomed into a real favourite amongst staff and clients.

Michael Todd and his team

With his High Street salon newly refurbished we interview Michael Todd to get the low-down. ‘How long have you been a hairdresser and why did you decide to go into the profession? Having left school as early as I could with no particular direction, I got an job interview with a double glazing firm. I thought it best to clean up my image so promptly went to a local barbers that I’d frequented as a child. Steve the Greek Cypriot barber, on hearing my plans, turned to me and said ‘Double glazing sales man, that’s not for you!’, he was right… so then and there I began working for him. I remember being mesmerised watching him spin his comb and scissors and the skill in which he cut a head of hair. I always look back at those times as my inspiration. I then attended Christopher School of Hair Design in London to complete my training. (today Michael takes regular courses with the likes of Toni Guy, Wella, etc. to keep his finger on the pulse of latest techniques). The salon has just been renovated, tell us about it? We opened on East Grinstead High Street in 2009. 2 years on, due to expansion, it became necessary to add three more work stations as we were simply running out of space. It was the ideal opportunity to freshen everything up. The salon is now a beautiful off-white with classic red.

Lee, who had been working in Tunbridge Wells and wished to come back to this area, was the first new hairdresser in our current set up. At his interview it was like meeting an old friend. He fitted the bill perfectly and is a great hairdresser. Very importantly he brings laughter to the salon with his great sense of humour. James, our Mancunian hairdresser, joined us in October 2010, anybody that knows him will understand when I say he is a force to be reckoned with… He brings a great new level of skill to the salon and is passionate about training the assistant juniors. We have two hairdressers in training Tina and Georgia who have already shown tons of potential. What do you love most about hairdressing? The best part of my job is when a client arrives obviously bedraggled and out of love with their hair & themselves and they look to me for inspiration and guidance. Just the consultation alone is enough to remind me why I am still a hairdresser, there is no greater pleasure than to see someone beaming when they leave the salon. What results are you looking to get for your clients? To help someone to achieve a higher level of selfconfidence is very important but just as important is teaching the clients to be able to maintain their new look at home. 01342 305201 www.michaeltoddhairdressing.co.uk East Grinstead Living • January 2012 29 High Street, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 3AF

ARE YOU LOOKING TO MAKE A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION? IF SO HERES AN IDEA... Could you become a buddy to a child or young person who has suffered the death of someone close to them? Jigsaw4u is a local charity with offices in East Grinstead. We rely heavily on the support of our volunteers, without them we would be unable to provide a service to the families. You would be offered training and ongoing support and work together with trained staff. Our service provides much needed support for local children, young people and their families who have experienced the death of a significant family member. We offer a 6 week support group, including a Saturday and within these groups families are encouraged to share their feelings and emotions and learn how to develop coping strategies to support their emotional needs. On-going or 1:1 support for individuals is also offered when necessary as well as advice and support for schools and other professionals. A parent who attended our groups with her 7 year old son wrote the following testimony: ‘Jigsaw4u was a life saver for us – it equipped us with the tools we required to cope with our grief and taught us to communicate again. Before we felt alone and scared with Jigsaw4u we found ways to work through our grief together. We found peace, comfort and skills to help us cope with our grief’

Qualities we are looking for in a buddy are: • Excellent listening skills and the ability to empathise • Ability to communicate and interact with children • Have experienced a loss or bereavement • To work as part of a team supporting bereaved families If this interests you, please contact us on:

The English Language:

is there method to the madness? In the seventeenth century a renaissance of the classical languages lead to the ‘b’ being inserted into the words debt and doubt. Previously these words had been spelt ‘dette’ and ‘doute’ and the new spellings were a nod to the Latin words: debitum and dubitare. These other words picked up their odd for the same reason: island, scissors, anchor, rhyme.

spellings

Sometimes words which spellings were thus ‘latinized’, also then changed in pronunciation: describe, with a ‘b’ sound, was once descrive; perfect once perfet: verdict once verdit and adventure once aventure. Millions of school children have the language meddlers to answer for extra hours of stressing over spellings! Before the 14th Century, in England, it was possible to see where a letter came from by the spelling. With the advent of the printing press this became impossible.

I am really busy and don’t have time to go to the gym. I hired 3 pieces of equipment for 3 months and Michael kindly threw in the rower for free. It has been hard work but really satisfying to lose weight and to have a new outlook on life. Even my wife says that she quite fancies me, so that can’t be bad! Thank you Hire Fitness.” Jamie, Sussex
