Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Fascinating Facts about Winter’s most famous bird the
Robin
by Vicky Whitaker of the Sussex Wildlife Trust During the winter months you can still enjoy the sounds of birdsong outside your window including bursts of song from robins, one of our most familiar and popular garden birds. • Juvenile robins have no red feathers - they develop much later. This is to prevent them being attacked by adult birds in territorial battles. • Despite their cute appearance, they are aggressive and will defend their territories to the death. • They sing nearly all year round to hold their territories and even sing at night stimulated by light from street lamps. • A popular visitor to gardens and well-known for their tameness. They are particularly fond of fruit and have a ‘sweet tooth’. • Around Christmas/New Year time they start looking for a mate. If you have a wildlife query ring Sussex Wildlife Trust’s information hotline - WildCall - on 01273 494777.
“You’ll like this ... not a lot, but you’ll like it.” Paul Daniels will be appearing at the Chequer Mead this January on his First Farewell Tour: From Legend to Leg End. He will be joined by his wife Debbie McGee for a show full of magic, comedy and amazement. We’re lucky to be able to bring you a ‘Q&A’ with the famous television magician: What has the highlight of the tour been so far? The reaction to the show on Twitter and Facebook. The public ‘critics’ have loved it and that pleases me enormously because I decided not to do any of the material for which I was known and all the new stuff has gone down really well. What are you hoping to bring to audiences that they may not witness in other magic shows? Me :) Oh yes... Debbie does some routines of her own as well. The answer is that it is ALWAYS the presenter that makes the show, not the trick or the song. After your long career in magic, who, would you say, has been your biggest inspiration? Nobody ‘inspired’ me as such. I taught myself from books and for the first 7 years I did not know there was another magician on the planet! :) What was the highlight of your time at the BBC? Persuading them to put the show up for the Golden Rose of Montreaux, and then winning it.
Do you have any plans to teach the next generation some of your best tricks? I do hold seminars for magicians all the time. How do your tricks go from concept to reality? That’s an impossible question to answer because the tricks vary so widely. Some come in a flash, others murkle around in my brain for years. What prompted you to make the decision that this was your final UK Tour? It is always wise to read the small print and I think you will see it is the First Farewell tour. Who knows? It might be, it might not be.... but if the Stones et al can have Farewell Tour after Farewell Tour, I thought that perhaps I should have one. (Secret... I have already written most of the next one). The show is on Friday 24th January at 7:30pm. To purchase tickets phone 01342 302000.

2. Sift the flour into a bowl, add the almonds & mix. 3. Finely chop the chocolate, place in another bowl with the cocoa, sweetener and 150ml boiling water and mix well. Then whisk in the egg yolks and brandy. 4. In a third bowl, whisk together the egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff, then fold in the flour mixture. Using a metal spoon fold a quarter of this into the chocolate mixture and then gently fold in the rest. Spoon the torte mixture into the prepared cake tin, level the surface and bake for 35-40 minutes. 5. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for about 10 minutes; the torte will sink on cooling. Loosen the edges with a knife, carefully remove the paper and transfer to a serving plate. Lightly dust with icing sugar and serve cut into wedges with very low fat natural fromage frais and fresh fruit wedges.
Tip: Store the torte in an airtight container to retain freshness and it will last for up to one week. Enjoy! For details about your local Slimming World Group , please contact Maria on 07936 285037. 10 | January 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Local History Notes
JOHN FLAMSTEED By Dorothy Hatwell
John Flamsteed was the first Astronomer Royal. He was born in Denby, Derbyshire on August 19th 1646, the son of Stephen Flamsteed, a maltster, and his wife Mary. His mother died less than four weeks after giving birth to a daughter, who also died. Flamsteed was only three years old at the time. His father remarried but Flamsteed never really got on with his father and step-mother, in spite of the fact that they supported him thoughout his school life and afterwards at University. Flamsteed suffered from a rheumatic condition which affected his education. He attended the Derby Free School and, much later than he had hoped, went to Jesus College, Cambridge. It was while there that he heard a lecture given by Isaac Newton which strengthened his interest in astronomy. This had been his hobby since observing a partial eclipse of the sun in 1662. He correctly predicted solar eclipses in 1666 and 1668 and also discovered Uranus, although he thought it was a star which he called 34 Taun and only recognised it as a planet until some years later. He also asserted that the two comets observed in 1680 were really only one which was seen on its outgoing and return orbits. He was in dispute with Newton about this. Flamsteed was proved right as Newton had relied on information given to him by Edmund Halley himself, which was not completely accurate! When he left Cambridge he was ordained as a deacon in March 1675. When King Charles II pursued the idea of setting up an observatory, first mooted by his father Charles I, Flamstead made the king a barometer and a thermometer. Thus he appointed Flamsteed by Royal Warrant to be the King’s Astronomical Observer. Charles consulted him at the Tower of London to discuss building the observatory. The building was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, who thought that ”Observatories are the temples of science”. The foundation stone at Greenwich was laid in July 1676 by Flamsteed himself and he moved there when it was finished. Now, as Astronomer Royal, he was paid £100 a year, a sum he always found difficult to live on. This was made worse by the fact that he had to supply all his own instruments. The following year he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and Lord North gave him the living at Burstow (near Copthorne) in 1864. The salary which came with this appointment went some way to relieving his financial position, plus he gave tuition in astronomy and maths to private pupils for an
additional income. Living at Burstow for the next thirty five years, he carried out his duties as a parish priest while also working at the Greenwich Observatory. Flamsted was particularly concerned that the lack of accurate maps of the stars presented great risks to ships as the navigators had no precise basis on which to work. Latitude was comparatively simple to determine but longitude was impossible without accurate timing. The problem of ascertaining the longitude was not solved until John Harrison perfected his sea clock, or marine chronometer, some years after Flamsteed’s death. In his forty years of observing the heavens, he recorded nearly 3000 stars. As a perfectionist he refused to publish his catalogue because of his reluctance to stop revising the work. Shockingly Newton and Halley, who seem to have been unable to forgive him for being right about the comet, pirated his work and issued a printed version under their own names. Flamsteed was able to obtain 300 of the 400 copies they had printed and burnt them. His own book, Historia Coelestis Britannica, was published postumously by his wife, Margaret.

Ring Out, Wild Bells by Alfred Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty lightsky The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more, Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind.
He died on December 3rd 1719 and is buried in the churchyard at Burstow. There is a stained glass window to his memory in the church which depicts the Adoration of the Magi, featuring a prominent star. He left money to be used to “buy new coats for two poor Christian people” every year. When his wife, Margaret, died in 1728 she, too, left money for “clothing for two poor women”. On the corner of the road at the crossroads in Smallfield there is a pair of cottages named for him. His portrait hangs in the Painted Hall at Greenwich. There is a crater on the moon which bears his name, as does an asteriod. He was succeeded as Astronomer Royal by his old adversary, Edmund Halley, whose name is immortalised by the comet. Halley was also responsible for encouraging Harrison to continue to develop his marine chronometer. Isaac Newton, as the discoverer of the Laws of Motion, is of course even more widely known as a world renowned scientist. However, Flamsteed deserves more recognition than he has had for his painstaking observation and recording of the night sky. A perfectionist and sometimes difficult to get on with, his work as the foundation of modern astronomy was at least recognised by the late Patrick Moore, our other local astronomer. 14 | January 2014 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts
Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out thy mournful rhymes, But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease, Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Auld Lang Syne
NEW Group for a NEW YEAR
A N ew Y ear ’s Scotti s h G ift to the W o rld Born of the Scottish Lowlands, this Old Scots ballad permeated across the world as an ushering in of the new year, thanks to the brilliance of the great bard, Robert Burns. However, the phrase “Auld Lang Syne” (meaning literally ‘old long since” or “long long ago”) had been used as a phrase in poems of the rich-storytelling country of the lowlands since the 16th century - and likely existed earlier. Just as “Once upon a time...” is used in English fairy tales so was, “In the days of auld lang syne” used in the Scots language fairy tales. Burns, in a letter to George Thomson of September 1793, explained that he’d collected the song by noting it down from an old man’s singing. There is no doubt though that he put his own flourishes on the finished article. Eventually, it was published in James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum in 1796.
A newly formed theatre company for adults in the local community, Rising Stars Theatre Company, presents an evening of songs and dances from popular Musical shows including Copacabana, Les Miserables, Singing In The Rain, The Wiz, Godspell, Hairspray, Sweet Charity and much more! Here is the beginning of the one of the original versions (translated to English):
Should Old Acquaintance be forgot, & never thought upon; The flames of Love extinguished, and fully past and gone: Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold, that loving Breast of thine; That thou canst never once reflect On Old long syne. chorus:
On Old long syne my Jo, On Old long syne, That thou canst never once reflect, On Old long syne. ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is a nostalgic, sincere expression of friendship past. It’s interesting that at the point of welcoming in the NEW year, we would reflect on OLD friendships, family and loves. So it goes by considering endings, this leads the way to new beginnings. There is probably not one straight answer to it’s popularity, it has certainly been embraced universally and it was likely propelled forward as much by its melody as by the expression of words. Perhaps, in his wisdom Robert Burns knew we all needed extra cheering up after the crescendo of Christmas was over and the prospect of the cold months loomed. So he ensured this song was recorded for progeny and celebrations for many moons to come. And, although he didn’t know it at the time, his birthday on the 25th of January would give further cause for celebration and merriment in this coldest of months.
Oh for a Dark Haired Man at New Years! ‘First Footing’ is an old Scottish/North East English custom, still practised in places today, which dictates that the first person to cross a home’s threshold after midnight on New Year’s Eve will determine the homeowner’s luck for the new year. If a ‘male, tall, dark stranger’ appears at our door with a lump of coal, cake or coin you would have yourself a lucky year. You would in turn offer him sustenance and a drop of the strong stuff (whisky). However blonde, red heads and ladies would have been a bad omen - though I’m sure they would have all been welcome to the party shortly after! It was believed that the fear associated with blondes, came from the terrorizing Vikings who had an intermittent presence in that neck of the woods hundreds of years earlier. As ‘male tall dark strangers’ were in high demand, they no doubt received a good share of merriment!

Local History Notes
A Brief History of Ashdown Park Ashdown Park was once part of the large area of the Ashdown Forest enclosed under the decree of 1693 and over the following century passed through the hands of several land speculators. The forest mansion house known here was built by either Thomas Bradford, who had Ashdown Park in 1815, or by Rear Admiral the Honourable Jacob Henniker who owned and occupied Ashdown Park from 1822. At the time the estate comprised 3563 acres and included Pippingford Park, Old Lodge and the army training ground. In 1867 Mr Thomas Charles Thompson, Member of Parliament for Durham, bought the estate. After purchase, he demolished the existing Henniker mansion, except possibly the cellars, and built the house which forms the central section of the building as it is now. The grounds were then laid out and some fine specimen trees planted. The stream, which originates near
Wych Cross, was dammed to make fords.
and is presently used as staff accommodation.
Being a philanthropist, Thompson employed a great many workers for his estate. Houses were built for his employees and a school which collectively formed a little ‘village’. As an example of his generosity he provided free lunches for the school children. The school closed in 1943
Thompson had three children, but sadly one died in infancy and another at eighteen, consequently he undertook to build the Church of St. Richard de Wych in their memory, to the east of the present estate. This also meant the residents could worship there and so save themselves the three mile trek to Hartfield. Unfortunately it fell into disrepair and vandals stripped the roof of lead and smashed the windows; it was thus demolished in the 1970’s. Mr Thomas Charles Thompson died in 1892 leaving in his will a black suit to each of his employees in order that they would be smartly dressed for his funeral. Ashdown Park was bequeathed to his daughter (his sole heir) who had married the vicar of Forest Row, George Carnack Fisher - the Fishers had lived in a house on the estate which is now the Roebuck Hotel, nearby Ashdown Park. in honour of Richard Towneley): the East Wing was completed in 1938. The church, consecrated in 1927, was particularly beautiful with marble from Italy, Switzerland and Sweden. The Stations of the Cross were sculpted in Bruges.
they had eight children and it was their son G K T Fisher who inherited the estate. He left it vacant in 1914 to join the war effort, becoming a Captain. During this time it was taken over by Lady Brassey who turned it, together with her own house at Chapelwood Manor, Chelwood Gate, into a hospital and convalescent home for Belgian army officers serving in the Great War. Sadly Captain Fisher was killed in Palestine in 1917 marking the end of his family’s connection to Ashdown Park. In 1918 the Oxcroft Colliery Company purchased the estate and felled most of the mature trees, which were used for pit props. Then in June 1919 the estate was once more put up for sale, and in July, Sister Marie Saint Agnes of the Order of the Notre Dame visited Ashdown Park and considered it ideal for convent purposes. Sister Marie had been born into the wealthy Towneley family of Burnley. She entered the Order of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Namur in Belgium in 1872 and stayed in Namur
until 1915 when she returned to England. In 1919 she was requested by the mother general to find a property suitable for a training establishment for the novices and was able to purchase Ashdown Park for the order quite cheaply as most of the trees had been felled. In the Spring of 1920 the first Sisters of Notre Dame, together with 33 novices, arrived at Ashdown Park. Although the house was too small for convent purposes, stone was quarried from the grounds and the extensions to the building were planned. The money for this venture was forthcoming from the Towneley estates (which were bequeathed to Sister Marie when her elder brother Richard died) and from the Honourable Mrs Edward Petre (formerly The Honourable Laura Stafford-Jerningham, the daughter of Lord Stafford) who on the early demise of her husband, joined the order and gave her large fortune to furtherance of Catholic education. In 1922 the West Wing was completed, the Church of Our Lady and St Richard (so called

Harry Clarke of Dublin designed and manufactured the sanctuary windows where 35 Shades of blue were used in addition to other colours. Geoffrey Webb of East Grinstead executed the stained glass windows in the Lady Chapel. The eight windows that Harry Clarke created for the former chapel are based on the life of the Virgin Mary. The tower window shows Mary surrounded by angels in a deep blue sky, it is signed Clarke Dublin. The other seven windows are signed J. Clarke & Sons, Dublin. The nuns remained happily at Ashdown Park for almost fifty years until the United States International University took over in 1971. The Roman Catholic Church deconsecrated the chapel, and the USIC renamed it The Anita Oliver Lunn Chapel. Mrs Lunn was a benefactress of the University and patroness of many American educational, cultural and scientific organisations. The University did not stay long and in 1974 Ashdown Park was conveyed to Barclays Bank for use as a Management Training Centre, which remained until being sold to its present owners on 1st February 1993. The grounds now consist of approximately 186 acres which is divided into 95 acres of landscaped woodland and 40 acres of grazing land where wild deer roam freely just as they always have in the Ashdown Forest.

Friends of Chernobyl’s Children We are the local Mid-Sussex branch of Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (there around 30 branches across the UK). Our group was set up in 2001 and we bring around 14 or 15 children, aged between 7 and 12 from the Mogilev region of Belarus over to Sussex every Summer for 4 weeks. Each child comes for 4 consecutive years and stays with a local host family. While they are here they attend a daily activity programme which includes all sorts of experiences they don’t get to do at home such as swimming, trips to the sea, horse riding, visits to local schools and loads more. We also go camping for 3 nights! Additionally they visit the dentist and optician and receive treatment and glasses where needed. The children are dropped off and picked up each day in Horsted Keynes and are accompanied by two interpreters who spend the day times with them, and are on call 24/7. The kids come from one of the areas that was badly polluted by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, much of the radioactive dust created by the explosion was blown in the direction of Belarus and settled on the land and in the rivers in the days following the accident. Lots of the food our children eat is grown locally in contaminated soil and there is
also pollution in the air from the huge chemical factories in the city of Mogilev. Apart from the pollution there is a lot of poverty, wages are incredibly low, but food and clothing prices are similar to here in the UK. The children and their families live in very cramped, poor conditions, some of them live in dilapidated apartment blocks with families of 5 or 6 often living all together in one room. Others still live in dilapidated wooden houses with no running water or indoor sanitation. Most of our kids come from single parent families and many live with 3 or even 4 generations of one family in a single home. On top of this there are serious problems with alcoholism so some of our children have been fostered or are cared for by grandparents or other relations. Raising funds is always an uphill struggle (it costs about £600 to bring each child) but next year is the first time we will have to pay for the children’s visas. It will cost us £86 per child each year which will result in a 22% increase in our overall costs each year. Previously the UK government have waived the visa charge as we are a charity but in the last 12 months this has

changed and it’s already putting enormous strain on our finances. We sometimes struggle to find host families, and helpers for the programme and fund raising. We greatly appreciate offers of activities for the children while they’re here, as well as donations in the form of money, clothes, toys or toiletries. We offer individuals and businesses the opportunity to sponsor a child either for a year or for the duration of their time on the programme. Quote from Sheila Nash, Mid-Sussex Coordinator: “I think the aspect that certainly attracted me and I think many other past host families to support our charity, is the fact that we actually get to meet these children and over the years, form strong bonds with both them and their families back in Belarus, they aren’t just a name and photo in a far away country. Most people find their connection with the children a hugely rewarding and enjoyable experience.” For more information please contact Sheila Nash 01444 892149 sheilanash_@hotmail.com

A Daredevil Challenge in 2014? We are looking for people both locally and from all over the country to make a sponsored 10,000 feet freefall parachute jump to support the Queen Victoria Hospital Charitable Fund. In return we are willing to pay for it! We raise money to enable the QVH to continue its pioneering work into new treatments and surgical techniques, purchase state of the art medical equipment and also provide those extra touches that make a good hospital great. We will ask you to raise £395 in sponsorship money in order for you to jump for free and in turn we will receive an average donation of £140. In addition to this, every extra pound that you raise over the minimum comes straight to the charity, so please try to raise as much as you possibly can! Imagine standing at the edge of an open doorway in an aircraft flying at 10,000 feet - the noise of the
engines and the wind ringing in your ears with only the outline of distant fields below. Now imagine falling forward into the clouds, diving down through the air as you start freefalling at over 120mph! Then comes the peace and quiet as the canopy opens, the steering toggles come down either side of you and you begin a tranquil parachute descent from a mile up in the air, steering yourself back down to the centre of the drop zone below. Imagine being able to do this for FREE whilst harnessed to a professional freefall parachute instructor and plus helping our very own Queen Vic! Stop imagining, this could be you. We sincerely hope you will decide to give it a go. QVH Charitable Fund For more information call 01342 414511 or visit: www.supportqvh.org

East Grinstead Foodbank
January Blues? Some schools of thought have come up with Jan 24th as being the most depressing day of the year, but fear not! Here are some antidotes: 1. Eat a decent breakfast: don’t skimp on this key meal of the day even if you’re dieting, low blood sugar affects energy and mood. Try porridge, eggs, etc. and get some fruit in there as well if you can. 2. Keep socialising: even though the party season is over try to make at least some time to meet with friends. The companionship will help you and it will be worth the effort. 3. Fresh air, exercise and a good night’s sleep: do not under-estimate a good sleep, lack of it affects both the mind and body. Even a small amount of regular exercise will help with the January lethargy. If nothing else, try taking a short walk every day; you could tie that into getting some fresh air - the Victorians steadfastly believed in the health benefits of fresh air and they had a point. 4. Good mood food: apparently Omega-3 fatty acids is what we need to cheer us up. It can be found in oily fish, flaxseed, nuts and seeds.
East Grinstead Foodbank has now been operating for one year, having opened on December 10th, 2012. During that time we have provided emergency food to more than 700 people. Before opening, people asked, ‘Is there really a need for a foodbank in East Grinstead?’ Each one of those 700 people make it clear that the need is there, there are families and individuals in our community who simply do not know where their next meal is coming from. The foodbank can provide a nutritionally balanced food box containing breakfast, lunch and dinner for three days. It also contains a small treat. As well as the food box we have also been able to provide nappies, baby formula and basic toiletries such as toilet paper, toothpaste and shower gel. One of the most important things foodbank volunteers can offer is a listening ear. We have met many people who are facing a period of crisis in their lives. It is especially scary how quickly things can spiral downhill when people lose their jobs and face financial difficulties. We feel very privileged when people share their stories with us and a great sense of joy when people have returned to say that their situation has improved and their lives are back on track. Thanks to the dedication of each one of our volunteers we’ve touched the lives of many individuals and families over the last twelve months and pray that by God’s grace and the on-going generosity of our local community that we’ll be able to continue this ministry for as long as it is needed. Anniversary celebrations will be taking place this month. As building work begins at Trinity Methodist Church in the New Year, the distribution centre, where clients come to collect their food, will be moving to the Jubilee Community Centre, Charlwoods Road, from Friday 3rd January 2014.

5. Helping others: this can keep your mind occupied and off ‘dwelling’ and can return great personal satisfaction. 6. Book a Holiday: something to look forward to always helps lift the spirits! 7. Celebrate Burns Night on the 25th: with no other significant dates on the horizon this can yet be a good dose of winter cheer! Find a Scottish friend to show you the ropes...
