Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

8 ways to help you beat the January Blues
David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation presents
WILDLIFE ARTIST of the YEAR Hammerwood resident, David Shepherd CBE, is known principally for his wildlife art. With a career that spans over 60 years his back catalogue is an impressive one that includes iconic images of elephants and his stunning portrayal of a snarling tiger ‘Tiger Fire’. But it is for his services to conservation that he was awarded a CBE in 2008, recognising the contribution that he and his eponymous charity, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, have made to protecting endangered wildlife for over 30 years. The annual Wildlife Artist of the Year competition that David established in 2007 brings his two great passions together and with
spectacular results. “It is inspiring that so many like-minded artists support the annual competition,” says David
Shepherd. “Like me, they utilise their art to give something back to the animals and landscapes that inspire them and together we raise tens of thousands for conservation projects in Africa and Asia while putting on a spectacular show at the Mall Galleries in London each year.” With a revised look and feel, the 2016 Wildlife Artist of the Year competition is open for entries until 15 February 2016. There are seven new categories designed to inspire and to suit all artistic styles with everything from original prints and sculpture to mixed media and installations welcome. “In all categories the judges - made up of fellow artists, conservationists and art critics - are looking not only for beautifully executed original works but also imaginative interpretation, moving away from the purely photographic to compositions with great

Thomas Cure and the Duchy of Lancaster Local History Notes by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum A recent visitor to the museum asked the steward, “What do the initials which appear on East Grinstead’s Seal and Coat of Arms, stand for?”. The answer to that question is very simple. TC are the initials of Thomas Cure who was an MP for the town in 1572. He then applied to the Garter Principal King of Arms for a Seal for East Grinstead, which was duly granted. DC stands for the Duchy of Lancaster. The most important question (with no very obvious answer) is why the Duchy of Lancaster? That Thomas Cure, an ambitious man, who served as Master of Saddle Horses, to only three siblings to have occupied the throne of England, namely, Edward VI, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I, would want his initials on the town arms, is obvious. The reason for East Grinstead to be part of the Duchy of Lancaster is not. Most of the holdings forming the Duchy of Lancaster, as the name suggests, are in the north of England. The south, generally, forms the Duchy of Cornwall and pays taxes to the holder of the title, the Duke of Cornwall, usually held by the monarch’s oldest son. To understand it we must go back to the time of William I, William the Conqueror. After defeating Harold at Battle on October 14th 1066, William marched on to London to be crowned on Christmas Day. From that date onwards, we tend to think of him as living in England and finally surveying his kingdom in the Domesday Book twenty years later. This, however, is only half the story. William had left behind extensive lands in France. His previous title had been, and still was, Duc of Normandie. His wealthy followers, who had paid for the men, ships, horses and arms which had made his incursion possible and eventually, triumphant, were in the same position. They, too, had estates and families across the Channel which needed their attention. This meant that the routes between London and the south coast were in constant use by the king and his nobles and so had to be protected. William had divided Sussex into six vertical strips each, with its beginning in London and its southern end at the
14
channel coast. It is thought that the six martlets on the Sussex coat of arms represents these. William gave one of these to his most important allies. Each had its own castle, Pevensey, Bramber, Chichester, Lewes, Hastings and Arundel. The most important was the one which gave the most direct route to France in case of emergency, was the strip containing Pevensey. These strips were called “rapes” a word which pre-dates the conquest. In neighbouring Kent they are called “lathes”. Why the Normans would use a Saxon word is not obvious. This meant that the Rape of Pevensey was included in the Crown Lands, paying taxes to the monarch. When East Grinstead, which did not exist as a town at that period, was purpose-built by Gilbert D’Aquila more than a century later it automatically became part of the Crown Lands. The site was chosen not only because it was being situated conveniently midway between London and

January
Later, possibly in 1266, when Henry III suppressed an uprising against him by some of the barons, he seized the lands from the losers and gave them to his youngest son, Edmund Crouchback, who he then created the first Earl of Lancaster. These lands became the Duchy of Lancaster and passed through several generations until Henry Bolingbroke, son of John of Gaunt, seized the throne as Henry IV. He also inherited the title of Earl of Lancaster together with the lands known as the Duchy of Lancaster. This meant that the Duchy of Lancaster now paid its taxes to the monarch, as it does to this day. However, at some period, the Rape of Pevensey was removed from the jurisdiction of Lancaster and is no longer part of the duchy.
Recipe for a Happy New Year Author Unknown Take twelve whole months. Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy. Make them just as fresh and clean as possible. Now cut each month into twenty-eight, thirty, or thirty-one different parts, but don’t make up the whole batch at once. Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients. Mix well into each day one part of faith, one part of patience, one part of courage, and one part of work. Add to each day one part of hope, faithfulness, generosity, and kindness. Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation, and one good deed. Season the whole with a dash of good spirits, a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play, and a cup full of good humor.
I have been unable to find when this area was given up by the crown. There must have been a good reason for it, as the income from it must have been quite considerable. Possibly some exchange was done which made the administration of the duchy more manageable by its holdings being closer geographically. Whatever the reason, the duchy no longer extends south of London and East Grinstead has no modern connection with it.
Pour all of this into a vessel of love. Cook thoroughly over radiant joy, garnish with a smile, and serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness. You’re bound to have a happy new year.
I am indebted to my colleague, Olive Coombe, for the early research into this, which has been invaluable.

Championing Charity would return to the UK and help to spread awareness among our own young people. We created a “tree of hands” to create a visual link between UK schools and Chanzige. The leaves of the tree were made from coloured hands which UK children had written their hopes and aspirations on. The Chanzige children did the same and their hands were bought back to the UK to be displayed here.
Two years ago during a ‘year out’, Philipa Jacobs visited Chanzige Primary School in Southern Tanzania. She found, like many schools in Tanzania, it was horrendously under resourced, with little access to basic needs such as pens, pencils and paper; all the things that our own children take for granted. On her return to East Grinstead, she set up a small charity, Champion Chanzige, to help the school and local community in that village. The charity will remain small and will have minimal overheads with no salaries, rent payable or even the costs of flights over to Tanzania, etc. This fact is wonderful in that you can be assured that any donation made will go directly to the school, even (and this is important) the gift aid! Not many larger charities can promise the same.
for funding. With 6 members on the committee, 2 cousins recently became junior trustee member. Here is a Q&A with Phillippa about her recent visit in October: When you went out to Tanzania in October what was the main purpose of your visit and what did you manage to accomplish? By taking people that work in primary schools out to Tanzania I hoped to raise awareness of the difficulties these children face, I hoped that the staff members

Prior to our arrival the charity had raised money to renovate two classrooms, the heavy work had been done by the time we arrived and we all helped to get the rooms decorated and some displays on the wall. Andy Dobson, a teacher from Escots primary school in East Grinstead, was on the trip with us and whilst in Tanzania took film footage of what he saw. He has returned to the UK and gave the footage to his Year 6 pupils, who have made a film, comparing the two ways of life, which will be shown at Chequer Mead Theatre.

the children had an opportunity to learn but the adults in the community could make use of it too. After school, adult learners come to the school for IT lessons. They are charged an absolute minimum, just enough to cover the cost of the electricity. The same applies to the community centre, we want everyone to benefit, we hope to make it accessible to disabled people too. Tell us about the new trustees that have just come on board?
What are your immediate plans? We are now working hard to raise sufficient money to renovate the local community centre which sits in the grounds of the school. The building has no windows, doors, electricity or toilets. We want to address all of these issues and make create a building fit for purpose. What do you find most heartening about working in Changize within the community there? The children at Chanzige primary school are the happiest I have ever met: they have so little but make the best of their circumstances. The children consider an education a privilege and are desperate to learn. The community spirit within the whole community is astonishing and something that would never be seen in the UK. It is quite humbling to be able to offer a small amount of support. Any funny stories that emerged from your recent time there? There are always funny stories,
20
but they may not be fit for publishing! The ladies of the community like nothing better than ‘a girls night out’! Having asked their husbands for permission to leave the family home for an evening, they love to tell us ladies from the UK about their tribal traditions and what is expected of them as a wife. What was your highlight there? As so many of us travelled out to Tanzania this year we were able to take nearly £2000 of teaching resources with us. Watching the teaching staff unpack the resources and exclaim at what they were coming across was an absolute highlight of this trip. How has the charity engaged with the local area? Although the charity has been set up to support the primary school primarily, when taking on a larger project we try and include the whole community in our planning and thinking. When we renovated our first classroom, putting in electricity and providing PCs etc., we decided to make this a community learning centre so that not only

We have recently appointed two junior trustees, Elodie Ansell and Emma Harding. They have always been very supportive of the charity and we wanted to have a young persons perspective on fundraising, etc. We also have a Junior Committee at Chanzige as we like to ask the children directly what changes they would like to see at their school and we hope that all our junior contributors will communicate with each other. What further support do you need? At the moment it is all systems go to raise the £11,000 needed to renovate the community centre. We are making and selling candles, Escots school are holding a fund raiser at Chequer Mead and we have a quiz night in January. Looking further ahead we are having a fundraising camping weekend in July 2016 and are still looking for some musical entertainment. 8 ways to help you beat the January Blues With party season over, short days and less sunlight, the January blues can sometimes set in. So we’ve come up with 8 ways to help you beat them this month: 1. Exercise more Even a brisk walk every day will help! It boosts your energy levels and helps with the release of endorphins - naturally occurring chemicals that make us feel happier. Also be sure to get some daily fresh air into your lungs: the Victorians knew the benefits of fresh air and we are lucky it’s very fresh indeed in this neck of the woods! 2. Take care to really eat well and take a Vitamin D supplement (or eat food rich in Vitamin D). Good nutrition is essential for your body and thus your mind. Comfort food like pizza or chocolate might sound appealing in the moment, but the high blood sugar level can give you a real downer after and is not good for your body. Eating plenty of omega-3 rich food like oily fish, nuts & seeds, fruit and especially not forgetting the all important daily greens gives your body what it wants! We also need to top up on the essential Vitamin D because of the lack of sunlight during this time of year. 3. Be sociable It’s not as easy going out after the Christmas party season is over but staying tucked up at home might not be the best thing. Catching up with friends, even over an innocent coffee can 24
be exactly what you need during this cold month. Face-to-face human contact is always preferable to chatting on social networking sites. You might even like to try arranging a Burns Night celebration, see our article. 4. Join an interest/activity group. Joining a club, a gym or local sports club can be a great way to meet some new people and to have regular contact with people who share similar interests or hobbies. 5. Set yourself goals. Setting attainable goals with step-by-step plans to achieve them, can make everything feel more realistic, all you need to do is take the first step and give yourself a pat on the back with each step you accomplish! Why not treat yourself as a reward as you go along and before you know it you will have achieved your goal. 6. Do Something you’re good at Having fun is essential to life. Doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it and achieving something boosts your self-esteem and sense of wellbeing and accomplishment. 7 Get restful sleep. The benefit of a good night’s sleep can not be over-estimated. Maintain a good schedule for restful sleep, go to bed by the clock and your whole next day will look more positive. 8. Watch some comedy Laughing is great for the soul and can release pent up tension. Putting on your favourite stand up comedian DVD or making sure you hang out with that hilarious friend of yours can be a great move to keep yourself laughing through this colder month. Good luck!

Need an excuse for a fantastic night in?
How to throw a Burns Night guide January really needs a bit of brightening up so why not celebrate the life of the Scottish Bard on the 25th? Every year Scotland raises a glass in patriotic celebration of Robert (Rabbie) Burns. We all love a bit of tartan and dancing, so why you not treat yourself and your friends to a traditional Burns Night.
‘n’ tatties cake, a take on a potato rosti that’s served in wedges. 4.
Whisky Sauce: scotch-filled drams is central to Burns Night. Whisky can be used in cooking too, just one way: heat double cream in a pan over a medium heat, then add a splash of whisky and simmer to burn off the alcohol.
5.
Cranachan: Yet more whisky is called for in this traditional dessert of cream, fruit and oatmeal. You can use heather honey for extra authenticity.
6.
A master of ceremonies - a foolhardy chairman. Plus celebrants - you and your drouthy cronies.
7.
And always a good scotch drink to keep your cockles warm.
8.
For a more traditional party, add Rabbie Burns poetry readings, dancing and even some piped music if you can.
You will need: 1.
A warm, friendly place to gather (gracious host).
2.
Plenty of Haggis: love it or loathe it, haggis is the symbolic heart of Burns Night. If you’re not lucky enough to live near a traditional Scottish butcher (unlikely in the South East), you can lay your hands on traditional haggis online. It can be baked or boiled, and there are numerous versions, from vegetarian to venison. Be brave!
3.
26
Neeps to go around: this mixture of swede and potato is the mandatory Burns Night accompaniment to haggis. You can go for a coarse finish and roast the potatoes as well as boiling them. Or you may prefer to mash the two vegetables down to a smooth purée, which works beautifully with an oaty haggis. If you fancy breaking with convention, try a crispy neeps
Whatever format you decide, central to the revelry, however, is always a hearty supper. The idea is to motivate guests to be pro-active participants, rather than passive spectators. If you can get everyone taking part in a sing/song, spot of poetry, etc. then you are onto a Burns Night winner! Of course, it helps if you know your guests and can match them with a suitable reading. Happy Burns Night!

THE WORD: For the first time in history, the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year (2015) is not in fact a word. It is the ‘emoji’ above called ‘Face with Tears of Joy’. Emojis (the plural can be either emoji or emojis) have been around since the late 1990s, but with the advent of smart phones and their increased use in the last couple of years, 2015 saw the usage of these deliciously expressive faces, and use of the actual word emoji, increase drastically. An emoji is ‘a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication’. Despite many people believing it has something to do with the word emotion the term emoji has in fact been borrowed from Japanese, and comes from e ‘picture’ +moji ‘letter, character’. The similarity to the English word emoticon has helped its memorability and rise in use, though the resemblance is completely coincidental, but a useful coincidence at that. Emoticon, a facial expression composed of keyboard characters, such as ;), rather
than a stylized image (as the one above) comes from the English words emotion and icon. Emoji’s are no longer the preserve of the ‘texting teens’, they have been embraced as a valid form of expression across the generations and can often go where words cannot; they also happen to transcend language barriers, so they really are very handy! Why was this particular emoji chosen? Simply because it was the most used emoji in the UK in 2015, it made up 20% of all emojis used in the UK. The Oxford University Press partnered with leading mobile technology business SwiftKey to explore frequency and usage stats for some of the most popular emoji across the world. The word emoji itself has also seen a similar steep rise, it was found in English as early as 1997; usage more than tripled in 2015 over the previous year according to data from the Oxford Dictionaries Corpus! What a fabulous emoji to usher in the New Year, may 2016 bring you many tears of laughter and joy.

East Grinstead Museum in 2016 connected to World War One continue, as some of the worst fighting of the war took place in 1916. One battle took place, which involved the Sussex Regiment, wherein they suffered such extensive losses that it was referred to as the ‘Day that Sussex Died’.
East Grinstead Museum has a big programme of exhibitions and events planned for 2016 and fittingly the year’s first exhibition has a direct connection with the site that the museum is built on - the Old Market Yard. Markets and fairs tells the story of the town’s market heritage from the first markets held in the town’s historic High Street and the granting of a royal charter, to the markets held in Cantelupe Road where the museum is now located. There’s also the history of the various fairs held in the town, both traditional and more recent events. Luckily the museum has a huge collection of photographs and artefacts that will make this a very memorable exhibition.
It’s also a big birthday for the museum as it will be ten years since we built and moved into our present location. Of course there will be a party and there’s bound to be a cake, perhaps even another of our recent successful Big Bake Offs (you get more cakes that way!). We look forward to seeing you in the year ahead.
Following this the museum will once again be working with several partner groups who will be bringing two major exhibitions here later in the year. Details are still under wraps as we go to press, so watch, for further information in coming issues! Also planned during the year are a series of town walks led by Simon Kerr who has recently stepped down from his role as East Grinstead’s Tourism Manager. Simon’s walking tours have been a great success in recent years and are an engaging mix of performance, story telling and history. Dates coming up soon for these and also for the usual half term and Easter holiday activities for children. Coming up too will be a series of pop up mini exhibitions including the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Guinea Pig Club and featuring the collection now held by the museum from the Queen Victoria Hospital. Other anniversaries will include the 150th anniversary of the death of John Mason Neale, a past warden of Sackville College and composer of the Christmas Carol Good King Wenceslas. He was also a prolific author on a wide variety of subjects and corresponded with the great and good of his day, including the Tsar of Russia. Anniversaries 30

The Mystery of the Crowborough Poet
A little outside the EG area, but a lovely story worth sharing: “I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
Miss Haskins did not realise the King was going to quote her words, she explained at the time, “I heard the quotation read in a summary of the speech. I thought the words sounded familiar and suddenly it dawned on me that they were out of my little book.”
“’Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown’. “And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.” These are the mysterious words with which King George VI ended his Christmas broadcast in1939 to a country at war. They were penned by Crowborough resident Minnie Haskins (1875-1957) and came from a poem of hers called “God Knows”, which was in a collection, “The Desert”, published in 1908. Neither the poem nor its author was well known. After the initial famous quotation, the poem continues: So I went forth, And finding the hand of God, Trod gladly into the night. He led me towards the hills And the breaking of day in the lone east. So heart be still! What need our human life to know If God hath comprehension? In all the dizzy strife of things, Both high and low, God hideth his intention. The final section runs: God knows. His will Is best. The stretch of years Which wind ahead, so dim To our imperfect vision, Are clear to God. Our fears Are premature. In Him All time hath full provision. Then rest; until God moves to lift the veil From our impatient eyes, When, as the sweeter features Of life’s stern face we hail, Fair beyond all surmise, God’s thought around His creatures Our minds shall fill. 32
The quotation had been sent to the Royal Family by Jean Allen of Bristol, as “a message of comfort and hope in these dark and terrible days of anxiety”. They had been brought to the King’s attention by his wife (the late Queen Mother) and in fact, those lines were read at her own funeral, many years later. At the time, the source of the poem could not be found despite an immediate search on both sides of the Atlantic to identify who it was. Google was not available in those days! Minnie gave permission to her brother to reveal to the BBC that she was in fact the mystery author everyone was talking about. Thus he called them on Boxing Day. The next day the nation’s press arrived to interview Minnie, a retired tutor at the London School of Economics who was living in Ghyll Road, Crowborough with her two younger sisters. Fame found her overnight! The three sisters had come to Crowborough in 1937 and established Brooklands Pre-Preparatory School. Crowborough historian John Hackworth wrote a short biography of Miss Haskins for inclusion in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Wakehurst’s Wonderful Year Ahead Late last year the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew announced the appointment of Tony Sweeney as the new Director of Wakehurst - Kew’s country estate. In early November he took the helm, during the attraction’s golden jubilee year. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Tony has a keen interest in connections between the arts, science, creativity and learning to engage people in cultural and environmental issues. Here is an interview with Tony, with his plans for the year ahead: Congratulations, you were recently appointed Director of Wakehurst. What is your background and how did you come to have such a prestigious appointment? ©Jim Holden
I grew up among the wild hills and dales of the Yorkshire Moors, which is where my lifelong love of nature and landscape comes from. Ever since, I have been an avid traveler, and love to immerse myself in the sublime experience of nature in whichever part of the globe I visit. By trade, I have been a publisher; worked in open learning and television; then at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford I directed one of the first large National Lottery funded projects, re-inventing the museum in the late-1990s. For the past decade I have been living in the vibrant city of Melbourne in Australia, where I was Director of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. This was a brand-new cultural centre for public exhibitions, festivals and live events in moving image art, film and digital media. By the time I left, ACMI had become the world’s highest attended and broadest-ranging film and moving image centre. Though I love Australia, after a decade away from the UK and family, I missed the culture and green landscapes of the UK, and decided to return. Visiting Wakehurst for the first time earlier this year, I can only say I was completely ‘blown away’ by its inspiring beauty, and richness of landscape and plant life.

that is the link with Wakehurst: a place to connect my career developing innovative, exciting public institutions with my love of nature, place and design. 2. What are some of your tentative plans for the coming year? What are you most excited about? I see the wonderful wild green spaces of Wakehurst as a place to engage people through the senses and the mind with the environment, nature - and plants, on which all life ultimately depends. Wakehurst has several hundred acres of immensely rich and varied landscapes, organised botanically and covering many of the world’s temperate woodland regions. There are formal decorative gardens, arboreta, nature reserves, and the worldrenowned Millennium Seed Bank devoted to world plant conservation. I’d like to bring new things to add to the already varied offer at Wakehurst, so that both seasoned visitors and newcomers can experience nature through fresh eyes - and be inspired as it evolves over the seasons and the years. For example, new meadowland is being opened which we will see start to flourish from next year. Also, during our Wild Wood Weekend, we will open up coppiced woods for special public access, charcoal making and hedge-laying among other activities. People will learn how woods are managed; children and families will be able to experience and enjoy this together. I’d like to develop new live events and activities to show the landscape - and especially the botanical science underpinning our work here - from different perspectives.
in around 1365 and still looking fresh today! Fundamentally, I’d wish to carry on the pioneering spirit which has always driven and created the foundations for the Wakehurst we see today - love of nature, a spirit of enquiry, and the enthusiasm to explore and share its astonishing diversity. How do you hope Wakehurst will engage within the local area? The High Weald landscape here is of real European significance, and we are lucky to be located so centrally within this tremendous countryside, as well as being not far from London. Simply as a natural resource for all to visit, whether for a calming walk or for participating in lively seasonal events, Wakehurst is peerless. We also engage with local communities and interest groups. Recently, for example, we had apprentices from the Kent Woodland Scheme participating in woodland work. We also have strong links into schools, who use our gardens and labs to learn about botanic science and environmental issues. At another end, I also want to communicate better the major international projects we are undertaking. The Millennium Seed Bank, for instance, houses and researches rare and endangered plants to understand evolving issues in biodiversity and practical applications of crop wild relatives. We would like to wish Tony and Wakehurst all the best for a fabulous year ahead.
What part will conservation play in the year ahead at Wakehurst? Our conservational principles and practices and are centrally important, and done to very high standards. But it is not just about ‘maintaining our woodland’, not just about keeping it the same. Individual planted beds need to be kept fresh through interesting design ideas, or to incorporate new specimens. Woodland areas need constant maintenance to remove diseased or damaged trees, and to ensure light gets in to allow new growth. On a larger scale and time horizon, climate change is inevitably affecting the ecology of our entire estate. We need to be responsive to the changes in plant life this will bring. But we also need to preserve many of our iconic beauties - such as our oldest tree, planted

Is your computer running … slowly? Despite its loud threats of gigahertz speed and cavernous gigabyte storage, you may find your computer limps along, whirring while you amuse yourself waiting for something to happen… finally. If this sounds familiar, here are the common causes. There are two reasons that your computer may be slow without being faulty. Software writers are famous for demanding more resources as more powerful computers appear. Their demanding software can bring an older computer to its knees. Similarly, a slow internet connection may transform the best computer into a seeming-sluggard for whom sites and email slowly trickle in. You can check this by searching online for a speed checker. Download speeds below 2Mb/s may indicate a faulty internet connection. So much of the start-up software I encounter is unnecessary. It weighs on your computer like muddy boots on a butterfly. Culprits include unwanted start-up ‘helpers’, duplicate antivirus scanners, or nefariously active malware. Curbing this angry mass can release new liveliness. Soluto is a useful application for PCs that gives you insight into what programs start with your computer and which you can do without. Mac

users need a little more technical knowledge to use the inexpensive ‘Lingon X’. Combine either with an occasional anti-malware scan with Malwarebytes. A cluttered desk means you waste time making space to work. The same is true of your computers’ shortterm memory which constantly feeds the insatiable furnace of the main processor. Too little memory and your computer will wrangle with its hard drive while, seemingly, nothing happens. An injection of extra memory can do wonders for speed. Finally we come to hardware issues such as defective memory or a fading hard drive. This will usually be accompanied by increasingly frequent computer crashes and needs professional help. If your computer is 8+ years old this is antique vintage. You will need some especially light-weight software to treat your old friend tenderly, with a replacement peeping over the horizon. Wishing you a whizzy time!
