John Mason Neale LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum
The major impact made by John Mason Neale on the town of East Grinstead was his founding of the Sisterhood of the Society of St Margaret’s. This made a significant difference to the well-being of many of the poor residents well beyond the people who lived on Ashdown Forest, as it reduced the spread of infection to the public at large. Born in London on January 24th 1818, after a mainly private education, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge gaining a first class degree. His health was never good and he went to Madeira for several winters to see if the warmer weather would improve it before taking up a permanent position. He was appointed as a vicar in Crawley, but had to give up after only a few months. When he was offered the wardenship of Sackville College, he gladly accepted at a salary of £27 a year. He moved into the Dorset private lodgings within the college, with his wife, Sarah, and his oldest two children in May 1846. Sarah would give birth to three more daughters over the next few years.
and paintings of saints. In the view of the residents of East Grinstead and the Bishop of Chichester, these were “popish” elements and as such were not welcome. This was also confirmed later, in their view, by the founding of the first sisterhood since the Reformation and although it was an anglican order it was perceived as catholicism by the back door.
Neale played an important role in the town. He looked after the welfare of the residents of Sackville College with great understanding of their needs, both spiritual and material. He established daily services in the chapel, preaching there himself on Sundays. He also repaired the building with his own money, improving the resident’s quarters and restoring the chapel. He was particularly against the enclosed box pews, which he thought, divided the congregation, and had them removed. He even took an axe to some of them himself. The changes Neale made to the resident’s quarters were well received: the changes in the chapel were not. The chapel had previously been very simple in design. Neale was influenced by the Gothic revival. He COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY extended the nave by 8 feet and introduced a rood screen, stained glass windows
Neale was very concerned that the poorest of his residents did not eat well and so, much to the annoyance of his wife, who had to do the cooking, he wrote, “Our dinners cannot begin until Whit Monday. The intense trouble of my kitchen restorations to that end, nobody can tell” Mrs Neale was not so sure, she thought that the idea “was pleasanter in theory than in practice.” Continues over the page.

JOHN MASON NEALE CONTINUED
The good work being done by the sisters was gradually recognised but three years later, the death of the daughter of the Rector of All Saints, Lewes, from scarlet fever caught from one of her patients, brought accusations of Neale benefitting, financially, from her death. She left £400 to the college. It was even rumoured that Neale had deliberately sent her to the most infectious cases in order that she might succumb and so hasten the legacy. Neale’s work was gradually appreciated and money was raised to build a convent. A site was found in Moat Road and the foundation stone laid in 1865. It was not finished until 1870. Unfortunately, Neale had died three years earlier. Neale’s frail health also had its positive side. He was able to spend time on his writings and translations which benefitted the whole canon of religious work, not only East Grinstead, but in the wider world as well. He spoke several languages fluently and was able to translate many others. This enabled him to access writings from countries across the world.
Neale was particularly, very concerned with the plight of those who dwelt on Ashdown Forest. Without money their diet was poor and they had no help when they were sick. Cholera and dysentery ran rife. This was a period when the streets of East Grinstead still had open sewers, with rivers of waste running down them.
He was fond of children and wrote books for them which were popular at the time. They all emphasised the importance of being good neighbours and the pleasure to be had from service in the community. His impact on the town were not really recognised until after his death. His religious views were not in accord with the bishop at the time and anti-Neale feelings were out of all proportion and took no account of the humanitarian side of his work.
“One dreary autumn afternoon… looking out on that vast tract of country which is overlooked by my study windows along which the November rains were then driving in lines almost horizontal I saw the poverty of those who scraped a living on Ashdown Forest”
His lifelong attitude seems to have its basis in the following quotation;
His answer was to found the Anglican Sisterhood of St Margaret. These nuns went onto the forest and treated the people living there. They actually stayed with some families for several weeks and shared the hardships with them. The sisters were originally lodged COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY in a house in Church Road and then later above the shops in the High Street.
“Forward, when all seems lost, when the cause looks utterly hopeless;” A principle that we can all adopt, especially in this new year. The museum has an exhibition on Neale to mark the bicentenary of his birth. It runs from January 10th 2018 until April 29th.

Front Cover artist: Oliver Pyle As a landscape artist, Oliver places much importance on being outdoors. “This area is an artist’s dream, there is never a shortage of subjects to explore. And the county’s landscape is so varied; the rolling hills of the South Downs, ancient woodlands with carpets of bluebells and the wide-open heathland of Ashdown Forest. Not to mention the many charming villages, fascinating coastline, and steam trains of course!” Oliver is also running a workshop this new year: An Introduction to Watercolour, “You would be surprised how many people find they can paint. Throw in an abundance of practice and patience for a thoroughly engaging hobby!”. Something for the new year?
Growing up in this area, Oliver Pyle is an established local landscape artist. Entirely self-taught, his work is growing in demand: for instance, last year Medici Cards launched a new collection exclusively featuring Oliver’s work.
Oliver will be exhibiting in the Ashdown Gallery in Forest Row this January for its cityscape exhibition.
Oliver is self-taught, spending many hours drawing to gain the skills of observation and draughtsmanship; while his paintings are loosely worked, with the aim of creating an impression, its the accuracy of his drawing which underpins his style.
If you would like to find out more about Oliver’s paintings, commissions and his online shop, please visit www.oliverpyle.com for more information.

Dame Judi Dench: My Passion for Trees Last month British Wildlife Centre founder and owner, David Mills featured in the BBC’s Dame Judi Dench – A Passion for Trees. Dame Judy, who lives near Lingfield, filmed the production in nearby Surrey, which is surprisingly the UK’s most wooded county! This beautiful film sees her embarking on a magical journey to uncover the mysteries about one of her greatest passions – trees. Told through the narrative of the changing seasons and filmed over the course of a year, Judi Dench: My Passion for Trees uses innovative filming techniques and the latest cutting edge scientific technology to unlock the remarkable secret lives of trees.
nonchalantly through a woodland again without thinking about all of the incredible work that is going on under there. We think we live in a society, but it is no comparison to what goes on between trees, and how these chaps live.”
Reflecting on new insights gained, Judi commented: “I shall never be able to walk
She continued: “It’s mind-blowing. It’s wonderful and very exciting. I don’t know how I lived so long without knowing more about my passion, but I know now.” The Radio Times also featured an interview with David Mills which explores David’s involvement with the programme and his relationship with Judi Dench. The good news is you’ll still be able to catch the programme on iplayer! Sports and deep tissue massage treatments

Venison Shank
Venison is, of course, the local meat of this area. Therefore it seems fitting to bring you this recipe which is well worth a try this new year! By Head Chef Byron Hayter at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •
0ml vegetable oil 3 4 venison shanks Salt 3 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, diced 4 garlic cloves, crushed 250ml red wine 2l chicken stock 400g chopped tomatoes 4 sprigs of rosemary 2 bay leaves 150g unsalted butter, cold and diced • 1 tbsp caster sugar • 3 tbsp red wine vinegar
Method: 1. Begin by setting your oven to 200°C/Gas mark 6. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan. When you feel a good heat rising from the pan, season the venison shanks with salt, and carefully brown each of them on all sides. 2. In a large casserole pot, heat the olive oil. Add the onion and garlic and gently sauté until golden brown. 3. Pour the red wine into the pan and bring to a boil. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Reduce the wine by twothirds living
4. Add the stock, tomatoes, rosemary and bay leaves, bring to a simmer and add the venison shanks.
8. Whisk the butter into the sauce, add the sugar and red wine vinegar and check the seasoning.
5. Cut a cartouche (a large round of silicone paper) to fit tightly inside the pot on top of the venison shanks. Place the pot in the oven for two hours, checking the shanks from time to time.
9. Pour the sauce over the Venison shanks and serve with mashed potato and optional beetroot pureé – enjoy!
6. If the liquid seems low, top it up with a little water. Once cooked, the meat should be tender and come away from the bone easily. 7. Transfer the venison shanks to a serving dish. Bring the braising stock to the boil, skim off any fat and leave it to reduce until thickened to a light sauce.

New Years Resolution: Give Up Plastic Straws day. Worldwide figures must be immeasurable and many of these wind up in the sea.
Many of us would have seen the BBC's Blue Planet last month, which ended with a demonstration of the harmful effects of our plastic consumption. It seems almost inconceivable to be able to give up all plastic, but at least we can make a start by giving up plastic straws (and bags). Apparently in America alone 500,000,000 COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY plastic straws are thrown away every day— that means 1 billion plastic straws every other Living
living
Straws do kill marine life. In the ocean, they start to break down and ocean wildlife, like sea turtles will consume them, thinking it’s food. As statistics go, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. Okay this can make for depressing reading, but if we all make a commitment to shun straws wholesale, just maybe we can start to reverse these statistics. So please make 2018 the year you give up plastic straws as part of your New Year's resolutions - and any other form of plastic you can. And good luck with any and all of those resolutions this new year.

Funding Available For Community & Voluntary Groups By Martin Faulconbridge Mid Sussex District Council is encouraging notfor-profit community and voluntary groups working in and around East Grinstead to apply for grant funding, so they can fund more projects that will benefit the local community in the area. The council has allocated £90,000 for projects in the north of the district so far this year but it only received one application from the East Grinstead area when the last round of grants were considered in November. Community and Economic Development Grants of up to £5,000 are available for activities and equipment which will benefit the community or contribute to the local economy. The council also provides Facility
Grants for projects to improve existing community buildings in areas where Section 106 developer contributions have been received to increase facilities for local people. The deadline for applications to the next funding round is 10th January 2018 and Mid Sussex District Council would welcome applications from not-for-profit community and voluntary groups working in East Grinstead and the surrounding area. Guidance notes for applicants are available on the Mid Sussex District Council website at www.midsussex.gov.uk/my-street-mycommunity/people/community-andvoluntary-groups/corporate-grants-andexternal-funding/

Art to lift the Heart which provide a wealth of research possibilities. 'My dad was also an artist and painted locally too, having an exhibition annually in the Rose and Crown pub in Fletching during the 1970s'.
Burgess Hill born Lyndsey Smith describes herself as 'an artist with a passion for drawing and painting in watercolour, bringing life to everyday scenes with busy people and bright colours'. Buildings are the biggest feature in most of her heartwarming paintings, always with a nod to their history and the stories held within. She has painted all over Sussex, including East Grinstead. We asked Lindsey what inspired her most about
painting in Sussex, 'Having lived in Sussex all my life, and brought my family up here, I enjoy both the countryside and the coast. I am fascinated with finding out the history and tracing development, from picking up worked flint in the fields, tracing roman roads and disused railway lines, and visiting archaeological sites. 'Buildings develop over the centuries and there are often clues to their past to be found, from faded painted ghost signs to notches in the brickwork, pubs and shops
This last Chrismas Lindsey donated Christmas images to the Sussex Charity SASBAH (Sussex Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus), which are printed as Christmas cards and sold through Sussex Cards for Good Causes shops. She told us 'Last Christmas alone, 3000 packs of my cards were sold, raising ÂŁ8000 for the charity'. She has also been elected as a full member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art, a UK society dedicated to drawing, with annual exhibitions in London at the Menier Gallery and Bankside gallery. “My Darling Clementine” By Katherine Carter, National Trust Project Curator and Collections Manager at Chartwell
Not half an hour from East Grinstead is Chartwell, which many readers will know is the former home of Sir Winston Churchill, he bought the property in 1922 and lived there until shortly before his death in January 1965. This new year will bring an exhibition of the life of Churchill’s extraordinary wife Clementine. We are very pleased to be able to bring you a fascinating in-depth article about her: This winter marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Clementine Churchill, wife of Sir Winston Churchill. She was a truly remarkable woman who has all too often been overlooked in the history of the twentieth century. Her strength, charm and determination earned the
respect of all who knew her and her role was so vital that, according to Churchill’s own Chief of the Imperial Staff, were it not for her, ‘the history of Winston Churchill and the world would have been a very different story’. Though she travelled extensively in her role as a
prime minister’s wife, she always returned to Chartwell, the Churchill family home just down the road near Westerham. Clementine and Winston’s partnership was one of the greatest of all time, but who was the woman who, Winston himself would later say, made ‘my life & any work I have done possible.’ Early Influences Clementine’s family, much like Winston’s, were of aristocratic origins. The Earls of Airlie were a Scottish dynasty whose nobility dated back to the fifteenth century. Clementine’s grandparents, the 10th Earl of Airlie and his wife Henrietta, lived at Airlie Castle and their daughter Blanche, Clementine’s mother, was seen by her parents as a

After returning from France, Clementine was enrolled in the Berkhamsted School for Girls where she excelled, particularly in French, but her mother made it very clear that she did not want her daughter to become an intellectual. Her feelings were so strong that Clementine would go to a graveyard in secret, not far from their house, to do her homework, with her books laid out on the flat tombstones. Meanwhile, Blanche asked her relative Lady St Helier to launch Clementine into London’s society, taking her to balls and parties. The hope was to distract Clementine from her studies, which seemed to work and it was at one of these parties where she first caught the eye of the rising young politician, Winston Churchill. Love and Marriage
‘wayward spirit’ with a strong character but unpredictable temperament. She married Colonel Sir Henry Hozier, an ex-cavalry officer who was twenty-five years her senior but their marriage was a disaster, with affairs and illfeeling on both sides. It is widely believed that Colonel Hozier was not Clementine’s biological father, though he was the only father she knew growing up. When they separated, Blanche was left to care for her four children Kitty, Clementine, Nellie and Bill. She was deeply in debt and their finances, alongside the instability of her early years, made Clementine later refer to hers as a ‘very difficult childhood’
In the Spring of 1908, a dinner party was held which both Winston and Clementine were invited to. Having only met briefly once
When Clementine was 13, the family moved to Dieppe where they lived on a very limited income. It was during their time in France that Clementine’s elder sister and closest companion, Kitty, contracted typhoid and passed away. She had always been the most confident and favourite child, and it was said that their mother was never the same again. Following Kitty’s death, and with Clementine having lost her closest childhood companion, COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY the family returned to England.

before, the pair were seated next to each other as virtual strangers but quickly became captivated by each other and barely spoke to anyone else all evening. They courted over the following months, during which time Winston went away to stay at Burley-onthe-Hill with his cousins. In the early hours the 6th of August, a fire broke out that was so severe that a whole wing of the house burned to the ground. When Clementine heard news of this she was frantic with worry, but read in The Times that he had escaped the blaze, though had bravely returned to COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY rescuing paintings and other valuables. It was on that Monday that the pair went for a walk, taking shelter in the Temple of Diana as it began to rain, where Winston proposed and Clementine accepted. They were married at St Margaret’s Church in Westminster 12th September 1908, which according to Winston’s book ‘My Early Life’ was ‘when I married and lived happily ever afterwards’. During the ceremony, Bishop Welldon, who was giving the address, gave among the most prophetic words in our history when he said:

From the outset of their marriage, Clementine undertook all duties common to MP’s wives at that time, from being a political hostess to her constituency role and supporting Winston in his election campaigns, but Winston’s star was rapidly rising and less than two years after their wedding, he was appointed Home Secretary. They found themselves at the forefront of national and international affairs. When war broke out in 1914, she set a precedent by accompanying Winston, by then First Lord of the Admiralty, to inspect battleships and personally congratulate admirals on their victories. However, when the failure of the Dardanelles campaign saw him excluded from the War Council, he made the brave decision to resign from government and go fight at the Western Front. Whilst apart, the pair corresponded frequently with Winston sending wish lists of items required at the front. Enquiries: 01342 300152

Meanwhile Clementine lobbied newspaper proprietors, Cabinet Ministers and Military Chiefs to boost her husband’s reputation. She also headed a campaign for housewives to make emergency gas masks for the front and organise canteens for munitions workers. For her efforts she was made a CBE and nicknamed ‘the queen of wives’. Her devotion to Winston never faltered and when the Second World War came, Clementine’s calm defiance made her a figure of admiration. This time as wife to the Prime Minister, Clementine efforts ranged from visiting bomb-damaged areas and being a fire watcher at Downing Street to diplomatic works, gaining the respect of world leaders. Perhaps most importantly, she tempered her husband, offering wisdom and counsel alongside the love and tenderness he needed, writing even at the height of war ‘Never forget that when history looks back, your vision and your piercing energy will all be part of your greatness.’
Quick Quiz
Their marriage of over half a century wasn’t without its trials and difficulties, but Clementine knew how to cope with Winston’s temperament, his changes of mood and his way of life like no other. Throughout all the political upheaval, his wilderness years and the horrors of war, Clementine never doubted that he was destined for greatness, and it was her support that gave him the strength to go on. An exhibition at Chartwell, the Churchill family home, focuses on the extraordinary life of Lady Clementine. Clementine Churchill: Speaking for Herself is open daily to 18 February, 11am–3pm. A House Made By Chisel & Mouse model they intended. This combination is reflected in their name, Chisel and Mouse (as in computers, not furry animals).
Robert and Gavin Paisley probably didn't know what they were in for when they packed up their IT business to focus on making, 'things with their hands'.
Each model is a very precise replica of a real building or city landscape, whether it’s a landmark such as Battersea Power Station (their most popular model) or someone's home - frequently requested.
The Nutley based brothers were inspired by the up and coming revolutionary 3D printer and decided 'models' was their craft-to-be. However their initial 3D printer model results fell short of their high 'luxurious' standards, as they couldn't get the finish they were after. Their aim was to 'make something beautiful, achieving the finish we want'.
The reproductions must be exact, there is nothing abstract about these models, Gavin and Robert use architectural drawings, Google Earth, satellite info and photographs to create CAD drawings. The boys even achieve the exactitude they're after by counting each brick alongside the window panes!
After various experimentation, they settled on a combination of plaster-moulding 'analogue', and 3D printing 'digital', to get the perfect

Ring out, wild bells
Congratulations to the Bluebell Railway for winning 'Leisure and Tourism Category' at the Sussex Business Awards held at the end of last year. Hundreds of applicants had been whittled down to a shortlist of just 40 finalists covering 17 categories. Amongst those present were the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex. A team from the Railway attended the event; the award was received by Gordon Owen, General Manager, who gave a small acceptance speech acknowledging the commitment and hard work of the volunteers and staff. It was a record year for entries received so the Bluebell has beaten stiff competition making the win even sweeter still.
By Lord Alfred Tennyson
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light; The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out a slowly dying cause, and ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, with sweeter manners, purer laws... Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more, Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring in the valiant man and free, the larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace.
