Good News for Local Rivers:

Otter spotted!

Fran said, “This is extremely exciting, as it was only two years ago – almost to the day - that a live otter was first caught on camera in Sussex, marking the return of this species to our county after an absence of almost five decades. Thanks to this latest sighting, we now know for certain that otters have made a comeback in two separate Sussex river catchments. “This is fantastic news. Following decades of hard work by a range of government bodies, charities and others, it shows that our rivers are now recovering from the pollution that COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY killed them off. The otter is a

©Stephen BraySussex Wildlife Trust

An eagle-eyed member of the public recently caught sight of a suspected otter in central Sussex, in an area where they have not been seen for over 50 years. Having captured it on camera, he kindly sent it to Sussex Wildlife Trust, where Living Landscape advisor, Fran Southgate confirmed that he had indeed seen an otter.

flagship wetland species and its presence indicates that the whole aquatic ecosystem is healthy – from the plants and bugs to the molluscs, dragonflies and fish, all the way up through the food chain to the otter.” Shy and normally nocturnal, otters thrive in clean, unpolluted water with a plentiful food supply and quiet, undisturbed places to rest and breed. Their diet includes snails, frogs, shellfish and eels as well as fish, and a single otter’s territory can encompass a

vast 40 km stretch of river. The otter is a native species but was driven to extinction across much of England by the 1970s, mainly due to persecution and the pollution of our rivers and wetlands. Fran continues “Having waited for the otter’s return for so long, we are thrilled with this latest evidence that they are slowly but surely recolonising Sussex. Their natural recovery marks a positive breakthrough in the restoration of healthy river systems across the county.”

HELP! New Year’s Resolutions? We desperately want our resolutions to stick but what’s the difference between winning and losing the game? Here are a few pointers… Start small. Rather than overhaul your life unrealistically to a point where you can’t maintain the changes, and just give up, start gradually and build in the changes… consolidating along the way. For instance, if you want healthier eating habits, without cutting anything out initially, ensure you have a decent portion of vegetables with every single meal, then move on to replacing the deserts with something healthy like a naked bar, etc, etc.

Change One Behaviour at a Time Unhealthy behaviours develop over the course of time and become an almost automatic habit… in order to ‘retrain’ yourself it takes repetition and being mindful. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviours with healthy ones requires time, repetition and patience until it becomes the norm. Don’t get overwhelmed and take on too many of these changes

all at once. However, if you really genuinely feel you can make the big leap all at once and succeed, then go for it.

Ask for Encouragement & Support Share your experiences with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of co-workers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey easier and enjoyable.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up Perfection is unattainable! Remember that minor mis-steps does not mean all is lost. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track and gradually build it up again if necessary.

Winter Warming Steamed Caramel & Apple Pudding By Andrew Wilson, Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Serves 8

Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

170g unsalted butter 250g caster sugar 170g self-raising flour 2 whole eggs 1 egg yolk ½ teaspoon ground mixed spice 3 bramley apples 100ml of water

Method 1. Peel, core and chop the apples into evenly sized pieces and place to one side. 2. Place 80g of the caster sugar in a heavy bottomed pan and place on a medium heat – do not stir, just let the sugar turn to a golden caramel colour. 3. Add your apples followed by the water to the caramel and cook out until all the apples have softened. Once cooled slightly, break the apples up with a fork, to create a coarse puree, and set to one side.

8. Then place a small saucer at the bottom of a deep pan with the pudding basin on top. Fill the pan with warm water ¾ of the way up the basin, put a tight-fitting lid on then bring the water up to a simmer and cook for 2 ½ hours, checking every 30 minutes that the water is still at a good level, topping up if necessary. To check it’s cooked, place a knife through the middle of the basin and it should come out clean, just like a sponge cake.

4. Take a pudding basin around 6 inch diameter, grease with butter then dust with a covering of flour. 5. Pour the apple mix into the bottom of the basin. 6. Cream together the remaining 170g caster sugar with the butter until light and fluffy, then add one egg at a time and mix together. Carefully fold in the flour and mixed spice – you may also need a touch of milk just to loosen the mix.

9. When cooked, turn upside down onto a plate, leave for 3-4 minutes then give it a shake and it will pop out. Serve with custard. Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club Wych Cross, RH18 5JR

7. Pour the cake batter on top of the apple mix, cover with greaseproof paper and tie COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY up the top of the pudding basin with string to keep the steam in and the water out.

ASHDOWN RAMBLING CLUB A brisk walk in the countryside will help to blow away the cobwebs and the lethargic feeling after Christmas. Walking with a group is a good way to make new friends and discover your local area. The Ashdown Ramblers are a very friendly local group and new members are always warmly welcomed. The Ashdown Rambling Club, based in East Grinstead, was founded in 1961 and is affiliated to the Ramblers’ Association. Despite the club name, our walks are not limited to the Ashdown Forest and our walks cover a wide area of Surrey, Kent and Sussex. Members’ cars are used to convey walkers from East Grinstead to the start of the walk.

pavilion. On Sundays we meet at the long stay car park, adjacent to Chequers Mead Car Park, De La Warr Road.

We have an annual coach outing each summer, usually to a cathedral city, with optional long or short walks.

Please see www.ashdownramblers.org.uk for more information about the club and the walks programme or phone Grace on 01342 833841 for more information.

We usually have full-day and half-day walks twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. We take a packed lunch for the full-day walks, which are between 8 and 10 miles long. The half-day walks are between 4 and 5 miles long and sometimes include an optional pub lunch. Almost all of our walks are circular and at the end of every walk we enjoy a cup of tea with cakes or biscuits. For Wednesday walks we COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY meet at the East Court, lower car park by the sports Living living

EG Paving the Way for Fairtrade Fairtrade Fortnight will return in 2019 from 25th February to 10th March and Fairtrade EG will be celebrating achievements, whilst encouraging further fairtrade commitments. East Grinstead was one of the first Fairtrade towns across Sussex and is carrying the torch for this campaign. In 2019 the focus is on cocoa because farmers of this iconic Fairtrade product have seen prices crash to crisis levels in the last few years, particularly in West Africa where most is grown. This is the first of a three year campaign to turn the situation around. Many farmers – both men and women – are underpaid and exploited. It’s even worse for the women who work in the fields and in the home, they’re often overlooked and underrepresented, and usually see even less of the money for their crop. So the voices of women farmers will also be at the heart of Fairtrade Fortnight. Whilst buying more Fairtrade chocolate is the essential first step, more needs to be done to tackle the grave injustice at the heart of this multi-billion pound industry. The good COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY news is there has never been more understanding of the living

Angus Coull of BALA Sport with Town Mayor, Rex Whittaker, Richard Tramontin, Chair of EG Town Football Club, and Steve Phillips from EG Meads FC. need to pay a living income. Fairtrade EG will join others round the country to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and is planning events in schools, churches and the communities - more details in the February issue of EG Living. Definite date for the diary - Monday 4th March - a fundraising quiz and charity meal to be held jointly with EG Museum at The Ghurka Peacock Restaurant. Get your team together now! Recently Fairtrade EG and BALA Sport were invited to a meeting of EG Sports Council to explain the concept behind Fairtrade sports balls which are made in Sialkot the Punjab area of Pakistan where 70% of the world's hand stitched footballs are made. conditions with access to union representation, are paid fairly and there is no child labour. Workers also receive an additional 10% Fairtrade Premium which has been used to fund free eye and diabetes tests, school books, free safe transport to and from work, and water purification plants for the use of the whole community, not just factory workers. There was a great deal of interest shown by council members. Locally both Imberhorne School and St Peter's Catholic Primary School use Fairtrade BALA footballs so Fairtrade EG hopes other local schools and clubs will follow suit very soon. Both Imberhorne and St Peter's are Fairtrade Achiever Schools. See www.fairtrade.org.uk or for more information call Susan Joy: 01342 835190. “In the Bleak Midwinter” LOCAL HISTORY NOTES

by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

Imberhorne Lane 1st and so on. This means that for them, Winter commences on December 1st, although the Winter Solstice, the day on which the sun is furthest from the equator, is December 21st or 22nd. Because of the tilt of the earth this means it is the coldest time of the year in the northern hemisphere and, conversely the hottest in the southern. The day in our calendar that marks the first day of winter (21st) refers to the astronomical seasons which are a result of the Earth's axis and orbit around the sun taking into account equinoxes and solstices. However, the Met Office uses a meteorological seasons definition which is instead based on annual temperature cycles measuring the meteorological (atmospherical) state and coinciding with the Gregorian calendar to determine a clear transition and equal length seasons! As already stated, these always start

This opening line in a poem by Christina Rossetti, which was set to music by Harold Darke and is now a well-known hymn, sums up the severe weather which was felt in the C19th and earlier. Shakespeare also emphasised the severity of the winter weather in “Love’s Labours Lost”: When icicles hang by the wall, And Dick the shepherd blows his nail. He goes on to detail the hardships endured by our forefathers in this season. Due to global warming our winters do not seem to be as harsh, although modern methods of heating do soften the impact of cold weather for us. However, once we enter the season of winter, we can expect the colder weather to start. The meteorologists make things tidy by starting allCOMMUNITY our seasons on the first day of the month BUSINESS DIRECTORY in which the season really starts. For example, spring begins on March 1st, summer on June

This solstice has played an important part in the history of many civilisations. Around the date of December 21st, the Babylonians celebrated the birthday of the Queen of Heaven. In ancient Arabic mythology it was alleged that the moon was born on the 24th, and the Romans celebrated the great feast of Saturnalia on the 21st, as it was the birthday of the sun. Small wonder then, as the conversion from paganism to Christianity began, that December 25th was chosen as the birth of Christ. People were used to celebrating at this time of the year and so the focus of the time could easily shift to a Christian emphasis. Customs could also be slanted in new directions. In this country Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, is usually credited with the introduction of the Christmas tree, but trees, particularly evergreens, together with plants such as holly and ivy, were a major part of most of the celebrations of whatever kind at this time of year. They symbolised the resilience of life and renewal, as they still do today. Many other rituals are associated with this time of COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY year. Wassailing predates the Norman Conquest; the word living

comes from the Saxon for “Good health”. Traditionally it took place on Twelfth Night, the evening of January 5th. Purists, however, celebrate on January 16th - the day on which Twelfth Night would have fallen before the reformation of the calendar by Pope Gregory in 1752. The calendar had gradually become out of step with astronomical time and so, in 1752, the date jumped from September 2nd to September

Living

13th (as fully covered in an earlier article… in some places people rioted crying “Give us back our eleven days!” erroneously thinking that their lives had been shortened by this move). Today, wassailing is more often associated with the Christmas and New Year period. It can take two forms. In Continues over the page. Enquiries: 01342 300152

one, leading up to Christmas, groups of the poorer people in the community would go from house to house asking for food and occasionally, money: We are not daily beggars that beg from door to door But we are friendly neighbours whom you have seen before. They were usually well received by their hosts and given treats such as figgy pudding and other sweet items. The wassail bowl was passed round. It would have contained the local cider or spiced ale with apples. Spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger were available in the Middle Ages. Imported from the East they were expensive but used on special occasions. In some places toast was floated on the top. By the end of the evening the wassailers would have been quite merry! In other places, early in the New Year around this time, the emphasis was on encouraging the fruit trees, mainly apple, but also pear,

plum and cherry to bear a good crop that season. The trees were awakened from their winter sleep and any evil spirits were driven out by singing and banging on pots and pans, as the wassailers walked round and round the tree. The actual songs varied from village to village, but the basic request was the same: Old apple tree, old apple tree We've come to wassail thee. To bear and to bow apples enow Hats full, caps full, three-bushel bags full Barnfloors full- and a little heap under the stairs. The villagers would process from orchard to orchard led by the Wassail King and Queen. The custom has not entirely died out. Some communities in the cider growing areas of the west country still wassail their trees today. However, we’ve just celebrated the new year, we are all glad that it is the period when we start to see the days begin to lengthen and the promise of spring and the renewal of life is upon us.

KEEPS SUMMER SUN IN FOCUS The winter is a quiet time for the RDA in the Sussex area but local groups continue to provide their regular riding lessons each week and carriage driving only takes a break when it gets too wet. Many of the participants have their eyes on the summer regional events where they can compete in a number of disciplines to qualify for the RDA National Championships in July. They will be trying to improve on the success they enjoyed in 2018 which was kicked off in May at the Felbridge Qualifier when five young riders from Newchapel’s East Park RDA Group succeeded in qualifying to compete in the Countryside Challenge. This event follows a simulated course where the riders put their skills to the test

by tackling obstacles and tasks they might find in the country. These include going through a gate, crossing a ‘road’, entering a farmyard, picking an apple from a tree and posting a letter. Although great fun, this also tests the young riders’ steering, balance and confidence. The event was sponsored for the thirteenth year by local architects’ practice, Cowan Architects from East Grinstead. Julia Hockin, a healthcare architect there, presented the prizes and said “It’s always such a treat and an honour to participate in these inspiring events and meet such enthusiastic young people. The weather held for us and there were smiles all round”. The East Park team all managed to finish in the top six in their classes at the RDA

National Championships which were held in Gloucestershire. Orla Wynne came 3rd, Evie-Mae Dobbe, 4th, Jasmine Musgrove, 5th and Darcy Brown and Zoe Beer both 6th amid stiff opposition from other riders who had qualified to compete from across the whole of the country. A record number of disabled horse riders and carriage drivers from the South East Region qualified for the Championships in 2018. There were 27 competitors representing 12 different groups from across Surrey, Sussex and Kent who took on more than 500 other competitors from around the

RIDING FOR THE DISABLED CONTINUED

The year culminated in the Autumn with the Regional Conference which is held locally at the Haven Centre and this year brought two of the world’s elite dressage riders to honour the achievements of volunteers and participants. A record-breaking turnout from across four counties were treated to presentations from Paralympic Gold Medallist, Sophie Christiansen and International Grand Prix rider and world class coach, Sarah Sjoholm Patience. There was also a new award from regional sponsors, Cowan Architects, in recognition of the Young Volunteer of the Year, The Cowan Challenge Trophy was presented by Chairman, David Cowan, to Georgia Budden from Quest RDA in Chobham.

UK – and nearly all (20) were placed in the top 10 of their class! All these activities come at a cost, so in order to support this RDA event the Trefoil Guild (Guiding for Adults) made the Countryside Challenge their official fundraiser of the year, at their 75th Anniversary celebrations. Plumpton’s Hope in the Valley RDA Group gave a marvellous display at the fundraiser to more than 160 people. Nationally, the guild hopes to raise more than £30,000 towards the running of the competition for the next few years.

It’s anyone’s guess what 2019 will bring to our local RDA riders and drivers but roll on summer! If you would like to support the RDA or find out more about their important work visit, www.rda.org.uk.

Later in the Summer, East Park RDA Group enjoyed more welcome attention when it received the invaluable gift of a new saddle and bridle from the Royal Warrant Holders’ Association Charity Fund, courtesy of local businessman and double Royal Warrant Holder, Kevin Giddings of Millborrow Chimney Sweeps. Kevin’s wife, Katie Giddings, is an instructor at the group, having been involved in the RDA at East Park for nearly 20 years, starting as a side walker and following the RDA’s coaching pathway to become an instructor. The annual Summer Carriage Driving Show at Felbridge came with back-to-back sunshine and made horses, harness, carriages and drivers look especially shiny in the warm rays, but John Tierney from East Park caught the judge’s eye to start the day by winning the COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Condition and Turnout with Slatyford Spartan. BURNS NIGHT him in Scotland. At just 27, Burns had already become famous across the country. An encounter with a 16 year old Walter Scott made a lasting impression on the young man who described him later with great admiration: ‘His person was strong and robust; his manners rustic, not clownish, a sort of dignified plainness and simplicity which received part of its effect perhaps from knowledge of his extraordinary talents. His features are presented in Mr Nasmyth's picture but to me it conveys the idea that they are diminished, as if seen in perspective. I think his countenance was more massive than it looks in any of the portraits ... there was a strong expression of shrewdness in all his lineaments; the eye alone, I think, indicated the poetical character and temperament. It was large, and of a dark cast, and literally glowed when he spoke with feeling or interest. I never saw such another eye in a human head, though I have seen the most distinguished men of my time’.

January is a rather bleak month, but for the 25th which is celebrated as Burns Night. An important night for Scots but also now celebrated by others across the world. We take a brief look at the life of the man himself: Robert Burns was born on 25th January 1759 in the village of Alloway, two miles south of Ayr. His parents were tenant farmers but even still he received a relatively good education. As a boy he became an avid reader enjoying the works of Alexander Pope among others. Burn’s natural poetic intuition and relationships with the opposite sex provided his initial inspiration; Handsome Nell, for Nellie Kilpatrick, was his first song.

Burns died aged only 37. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement and is celebrated across the world on Burns Night, this month. A good excuse to raise a toast on a cold January night!

Hard physical labour on the family farm was not to the taste of the young Burns, who increasingly turned his attentions towards the passions of poetry, nature, drink and women which would characterise the rest of his life. He fathered twins with eventual wife Jean Armour, but a rift in their relationship nearly led to Burns emigrating to the West Indies with lover Mary Campbell (his Highland Mary). In this New Year, Don’t get your Back Up about Backup There is a wonderfully dour trade-saying about computers: “there are two sorts of users: those who have lost their data and those that will”. Your backup is your final protection when things go wrong. Here is an introduction to protecting your data from the range of digital knocks and jars. Backup defends your data against many common issues such as storage failure, fire and flood, and the ever-evolving range of security threats. Many people make an occasional backup to an external drive using tools supplied with their computer. Sadly “occasional” can mean some time long ago in the mists of the past. Also, this backup is not itself protected: theft, physical destruction and malware can steal away your backup and your computer together.

need it. There are numerous threats such as ransomware which is an increasingly common attack that encrypts your data in minutes, often making it impossible to recover. Acronis and Backblaze are currently popular for simple backups systems. Both allow you to encrypt your data before it is sent to the store – just make sure you keep the encryption password somewhere very, very safe.

To meet these threats, I recommend also using a cloud backup. This stores backups in a number of secure professional vaults away from your premises. This system takes advantage of good internet connections to update your backup as you work, ensuring that it is current at all times.

Whichever backup system you choose, make sure that it works with regular testing so that you are confident if the heat of ‘computer failure’ is on. Good luck!

Surprisingly inexpensive, it’s popular with home users but it is businesses that definitely

The group covers a range of events including regular social nights, quiz nights, Sunday lunch, local walks, cinema trips, National Trust visits, live band nights and meet-ups for parents and their children. I also encourage members to post their own events and invite

"Mark was very professional. Arrived on time. I was nervous about using a professional as I had done a lot of the decorating in my house myself but the wall paper I chose was very expensive and I did not want any mistakes. He was friendly, reassuring and easy to talk to. He also took the time to listen to what I had to say and was very neat and tidy. Would not hesitate to contact him again.” Catherine See advert above

2019: NEWS FROM ST. CATHERINE’S 35 years ago St Catherine's Hospice was founded by local people who wanted to transform care at the end of life for others in their community. Thanks to the generosity and support of readers like you in East Grinstead and other towns of the area, the local charity has provided expert physical and emotional care to thousands of terminally ill local people and their families. Last year alone, the hospice cared for around 2100 people. But for every person St Catherine's helps there are two others it currently can't; two in three terminally ill people are being left to manage their illness and the challenges that brings, without full hospice support. That is why St Catherine's launched the Full Circle Appeal, to raise £20 million so nobody in our community faces death and loss alone. The Full Circle Appeal includes a new larger building at Pease Pottage which will increase the number of ward beds available and

allow expert teams to reach even more locals. It will also give the local charity an opportunity to work more closely with other healthcare partners, like GPs, hospitals, ambulance crews, local care home staff and

social workers, to share their expertise in end of life care. Building work has started and things are progressing well; the hospice is hoping the building will be ready in the next 3 to 4 years. More funding is still needed to complete the building, so this New Year if you would like to challenge yourself to help a good cause, or simply support the hospice in any way you can, we would be very grateful. If you would like to find out more about your local hospice or make a donation to support its work, please visit: www.stch.org.uk

SULLIVAN’S HEROES: A Home-Grown Charity that Keeps on Giving Sullivan’s Heroes receives no government or statutory funding, so is very thankful for support from local organisations, companies, charities and individuals raising and donating funds and providing services and resources. Intrepid fundraisers to date have run marathons, climbed mountains, swum rivers, driven rallies and skydived to list but a few activities. So, if this new year heralds a fundraising event for you, and you’d like to help build brighter futures for disabled children, please do get in touch with us: www.sullivansheroes.org. Sullivan’s Heroes charity provides financial grants and fundraising support to families who need to make vital home adaptations for a disabled child, to be able to continue to care for their child at home, safely and with dignity. The charity, founded and based in Turners Hill, was set up by Fiona and Richard Smith, who having been through the process of adapting their house for their late disabled son Sullivan, discovered there was little in the way of financial assistance towards this, where the costs are well in excess of council grants available. They founded the charity in their son’s memory to help other disabled children and their families going through the same arduous adaptations and requiring to fundraise to meet all the costs. To date the charity has now supported numerous children; there are many examples COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY on their website. Living living

Now winter downs the dying of the year, And night is all a settlement of snow; From the soft street the rooms of houses show A gathered light, a shapen atmosphere, Like frozen-over lakes whose ice is thin And still allows some stirring down within. I’ve known the wind by water banks to shake The late leaves down, which frozen where they fell And held in ice as dancers in a spell Fluttered all winter long into a lake; Graved on the dark in gestures of descent, They seemed their own most perfect monument.

Baileys Revolution Baldwins Hill Primary School pupil, Bailey Bocutt has taken it upon himself at the ripe old age of 9 to cycle 100KM on the 6th July 2019 to raise money for 3 cancer charities: Cancer Research, the Royal Marsden and Children’s Cancer trust. This all came from watching the Pride of Britain awards and after losing his Grandad last year to cancer and witnessing his 13-year-old cousin, currently in remission after suffering from leukaemia, he simply wanted to help. His father Andrew said “We don’t think anyone his age had ridden that much in one go... but Bailey wanted to do something no one has COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY done in the hopes of raising as much money as possible.

We told him it would be very hard, but he said it will be nothing compared to what his cousin has had to go through." Bailey is from a cycling background; his mum Hannah Searle and grandad are both keen cyclists and take part in events throughout the year. Bailey plans to cycle 100Km before he turns 10 and then in 2020, he wants to cycle 100 miles before he turns 11. A massive achievement and cracking thing to do at such a young age. He will set out from East Grinstead and cycle to the Royal Marsden and back again finishing in East Grinstead. The finish line will be huge, the local support so far has been amazing and the family expect some sort of event in itself at Living
