Testimonials: “It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row “Allzones have now skillfully performed 3 build contracts for me over the last few years; covering a range of activities from roofing/hanging tiles/guttering to outdoor landscaping, log cabin erection, building a bridge and interior refurbishment including flooring. They are certainly very experienced, know what they’re doing, are excellent trouble shooters and won’t cut corners.”

Dear Residents, Welcome to the July issue, Summer is truly here... and hopefully we can breath a sigh of relief - the sun is certainly shining as this goes to print. This month is jam packed with lots of local articles of interest from the latest about the Imberhorne Sports Hall fundraising to Olympic Dreams of both 2012 (see the Hockey article) and of 1936 (see our Local History Notes article). If there’s anyone out there with a pastime or hobby they’d like to share with other residents, please drop us a line. Supporting local charity and community is something we’ve done throughout our 7 years of publishing this magazine. So drop us a line if we can help publicise an event. ‘Support Local Businesses’ is very important, but why? To give a greater insight into this we’re very lucky to have an article written specifically for this publication by Clare Rayner, the national retail expert. Thank you for supporting any of our local businesses. Have a good Summer & Good Luck to our Guys & Gals of Team GB!! With Best Wishes,

narrower ride . Ignoring other rides, remain on the widening ride, passing a pond on the left after about 600m. The ride With Grateful Thanks to the Ashdown Forestbears Centreleft and Conservators for allowing us to side reproduce their walk leaflet. and passes along the left hand of pine woodland. There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre, Wych Cross. In a further 150m it joins with the main ride by the A22. Turn left to return to Long car park.

Valley Garden & Water Walk – 2.75 miles / 4.5km Another walk in this series explores the area west of this car park. A walk that starts with great views over open heath to the South Downs, then descends into the valley of Millbrook stream to the Chelwood Vachery Forest Garden and Braberry ponds. Starting in Long car park, head south-eastwards from its southern end onto a wide ride and continue parallel with the A22 road for about 150m. Turn right onto another ride towards trees and bear left on a gently descending ride. At the junction of tracks turn sharp left and gently ascend across heathland. Cross over a tarmac drive and continue to a second drive. Turn right and follow it for 300m to reach the entrance to some houses, part of the former Chelwood Vachery estate . One explanation (there are others!) for the word Vachery is that it is derived from the French ‘vache’ (cow) and from the practice, and right, of Michelham Priory (near Hailsham) to send cattle up onto the Forest in the 14th century. The area was ‘disafforested’ (i.e. removed from the common land of the Forest) by a decree in 1693.

© Dave Brooker: mappingideas.co.uk

The estate became covered by woodland and in 1905 a large house and spectacular grounds were created by the new owner, banker and MP Sir Stuart Samuel.

In 1994 the Conservators acquired half of the estate comprising woodland and what is now called the Forest Garden. Turn left onto a woodland track that gently descends and bears right. After 500m pass through a gate on the right and descend to reach the stream and ponds of Chelwood Vachery Forest Garden. Follow the watercourse upstream........... The four lakes and ponds, each with a weir and sluice, were created shortly before 1910. They were all dredged in 2008 and 2009 as part of the Garden’s continuing restoration, with the support of the Vachery’s previous owner British American Tobacco. Additionally, volunteers have cleared extensive thickets of invasive, purple-flowered Rhododendron ponticum, taking care to leave the planted species (notably R. loderi) that dot the valley landscape. The aim is to open up views beneath the canopy of mature trees, a mix of native oaks and beeches and ornamental red oaks, maples and juneberry (Amelanchier). Halfway along, the valley is crossed by a small stream. The so-called Gorge up the slope, shaped by limestone boulders from the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, was installed in the 1920s by Col. Gavin Jones, a well-known landscape designer, at the behest of FJ Nettlefold whose family owned the site from 1925 until 1955.

After about 400m is a stone Folly Bridge. Pass through it and cross the stream by stepping-stones (or use the footbridge to the right). The Folly Bridge was built in the early 1930s. Its main use now is to cross the bridleway that passes beneath it! Continue ahead ascending steeply on the bridleway. At the top of the ascent after 500m, turn right at the cross-rides . Cross over a drive and after another 200m turn right on a steep narrow descending path to reach Braberry Ponds Braberry Ponds are fed by the Millbrook stream that descends to the Vachery and eventually exits the Forest at Newbridge, Colemans Hatch. With funding from Natural England under the Higher Level Stewardship scheme, the Conservators dredged these ponds in autumn 2009 and cleared encroaching scrub from the adjacent heathland. Bear left and follow the path along the line of ponds and stream to reach a bridge. Turn right over the bridge and ascend to a track junction . Follow the main track towards the crest of the hill. About 75m before the crest, turn right onto a narrower ride. Ignoring other rides, remain on the widening ride, passing a pond on the left after about 600m. The ride bears left and passes along the left hand side of pine woodland. In a further 150m it joins with the main ride by the A22. Turn left to return to Long car park.

Another walk in this series explores the area west of this car park.

Krys O’Brien I’ve been part of 107 Meridian FM since May 2007 and have done and still do a myriad of jobs vital to the smooth running of a radio station, as well as presenting my two shows per week on a Saturday morning 10-12 noon and a Wednesday evening 6-8pm. I am now Community Access Officer (WSCC), Head of Marketing and Sales, Advert and Radio Play Production and Book Reviews. I’ve recently introduced features to the station, including a sports show, a film review show, a monthly gardening feature, restaurant review, comedy club night review, a Meridian FM Book Club in association with The Bookshop on East Grinstead’s High Street, and Radio Plays - our first one produced by Meridian

FM Productions is in it’s postproduction stage and will be aired shortly. I’m also part of our busy and vibrant outside broadcast team and hence am often out and about. I’ve got an eclectic taste in music but particularly love bouncy rocky music and hence was a Rock Chic for quite some time - known by one and all as Starlight because I did that show between 11pm and 1am! She still occasionally comes out of the woodwork on a Wednesday evening but now plays mostly classic rock. I also do a show on a Saturday morning, during which I play generic music and enjoy chatting with my many and varied guests. My life with 107 Meridian FM

Raising the flag - raising fun and raising cash towards Imberhorne School’s state-ofthe-art Community Sports Hall. The 1st of June 2012 will stay in the memories of everyone at Imberhorne for a very long time. It was a day where the whole school came together to raise money by challenging themselves to either a 7 mile walk or 26 mile team marathon and to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. There was a great atmosphere about the school that day and not least when the walkers arrived back at school to cheer the marathon teams over the finish line. All participants were given a commemorative medal. It was a great way to celebrate this historic event and raise money for the sports hall at the same time. Work begins on 23rd July for the £2 million project which will provide much needed sporting facilities for our deserving students and East Grinstead community. Thank you for all your support. 10 | July 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Imberhorne Sports Hall

The Next Step! East Grinstead Living has been supporting the Imberhorne School Sports Hall fundraising efforts for the last few months. We’ve now decided to take it one step further and become the sponsors for their next event, the pier-to-pier run. Here, we interview Paul Byrne, event organiser & head of the Imberhorne PE Department:

Please explain the ‘pier to pier’ run? What does it entail? Imberhorne school is still the only school in West Sussex not to have a Sports Hall and so we are trying to raise money to build a brand new one at Imberhorne Lane. I racked my brains to try and come up with something sporty and extremely challenging that had not been tried before. I looked at a map of Sussex and noticed that Hastings was the furthest place in the South East of East Sussex to have a pier and Bognor Regis was the furthest South West in West Sussex to have. It just made perfect sense to run from one to the other! What is the greatest challenge you face? The route is not the shortest route but follows the coastline to make the course more challenging – it is 66 miles long, or the equivalent to 2 ½ marathons. It would be like tying up your laces, leaving school at Imberhorne Lane and not stopping until you reach

Portsmouth! There are not too many “runners” in the PE department so rather than run the whole 66 miles we will run in pairs over 5 mile legs. This causes the biggest worry as it means that runners will finish a leg and then sit on bus for 3 hours before they start their second and third legs. Anyone who runs will know that this will make the legs of every runner very sore and very tired but I’m sure my team will prove their worth. What are you most looking forward to about it? We are all really excited about the run but also extremely nervous and it’s hard to know how your body will react especially over the 12 or so hours I’m expecting it will take. I think the sense of achievement at the end will be excellent and I can’t wait for a paddle in the sea and an ice cream in Bognor! We have been contacted by some ex students, many of whom are now training to be PE teachers themselves and it will be good to join up and run with them too.

12 | July 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

What are you least looking forward to about it? Apart from the very early start, the constant stopping and starting and the muscle fatigue, I’m dreading running up Beachy Head! I’ll do my best to find another teacher to take my place for that part! Dan Celani is probably our best runner so I’ll see if I can nobble him to do it instead! Tell us about the progress being made towards the Imberhorne School Sports Hall Fundraising? Other teachers from the school have climbed the three Peaks and our students raised money by running a 26 mile relay and we are well on our way to raising the money required for the sports hall but we still need more. If any readers would be interested in donating towards this worthy cause then they can do so at virginmoneygiving.com/team/ imberpier I would also like to thank EG Living for sponsoring the event and I look forward to telling you how we get on.

East Grinstead Living • July 2012

We Celebrated in Style! East Grinstead got together as a town for a week long series of events to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee, demonstrating a real strong community spirit.

Events ranged from street parties, flower displays, museum exhibitions, dinner dances, literary competitions and civic church services. The highlight of the Jubilee weekend itself was the Jubilee Parade through the town on Sunday, with over 500 taking part in front of a crowd of thousands who lined the route.

©Simon Kerr

© John O’Brien

Although many of the events were coordinated through the Town Council it still needed the help and commitment of the towns many community groups along with individuals to make the celebrations something everyone would remember.

© John O’Brien

©Simon Kerr

Then on the Monday we had the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon at East Court by the Town Mayor, Cllr Liz Bennett, which was followed by an incredible Giant firework display, which almost the whole town came to watch. Gardening as a Therapy Stone Ness Walled Garden Project in the village of Ashurst ( between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells) is run by Jean Burgess, a woman with both a vision and a certainty in the implicit health benefits of gardening. Here is the story: Over a century ago, our lovely walled garden was the kitchen garden supplying fruit and veg to a small mansion. Three very high brick walls protected half an acre of productive beds, an orchard, two heated greenhouses and a potting shed. Over the years, the garden fell into disuse, the walls crumbled and parts fell down, the greenhouses collapsed, and weeds outgrew the cultivated plants. That is a potted version of the full history of the walled garden – a lot more happened within those walls during the 20th century, but we shall fast forward to 2006 the Stone Ness Walled Garden Project was born. The aim was to develop a productive market garden following organic principles (where possible) and to provide social and therapeutic horticulture for people of the community with learning and mental health difficulties. The bulldozer moved in, and the western half of the garden was dug deep, trees felled, skipfuls of glass carted away, hedges of ivy hacked from the walls and the potting shed dismantled. The orchard and the south east corner (now the “wild garden” ) were left undisturbed. Then, we terraced the most sloping section, built back the fallen walls and restored the potting shed – sounds simple when you put it like that, but it

was quite a journey! Volunteers, donations, grants, and encouragement from new friends who visited and saw the potential of the garden – all these things helped us press forward, so that we reached a certain day in the Autumn of 2009 when our very first gardening client arrived. Two and a half years on, and I am writing this at the start of a typical week when we shall be holding six separate gardening sessions as well as being joined on Mondays by an energetic group from “The Hub” in Tunbridge Wells and on Fridays by the Oakley School work experience team. Our friends with learning difficulties come from a variety of home lives – some are in supported living in their local community, others may need 24 hour assistance, a few are at home with their families. They come to our walled garden to share in the pleasures of messing around with seeds, plants and compost, to enjoy the birdsong and see what’s growing, to sit around the table in the potting shed and chat over a cuppa and a biscuit (or two!).

16 | July 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Every session is planned, so that members of the group can tackle jobs suited to them: sowing big seeds if you find that easier; weeding the raised beds on the terrace if bending is difficult; carting logs for the woodburning stove and home made compost for the fruit cage – if that is what you like doing. And, most important of all, groups are very small, so we are all friends together for those few hours, sharing our garden and being ordinary people doing ordinary everyday things and enjoying each others company. Because the groups are small, for the time being we have no spaces for anyone else to come. But, if you, or someone you know, would really like to find out more, then do please give me a call. Just to add, unfortunately the lie of the land makes it impossible for us to invite people who use wheelchairs – the walk down to the garden follows a steepish path and steps, but these do have a nice grippy surface. Fabulous fish pie This fish pie is warm and comforting and can be made with any type of fish. It’s also a great way of getting kids to eat fish. If you’re feeding children, remember that they don’t need to eat as much as an adult and need kid-sized portions. If you’re cooking for fewer people you can simply reduce the quantities, or why not make the full amount and freeze extra portions for another day?

Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 50 minutes

Ingredients: 700g potatoes peeled and diced 425ml 1% fat milk 25g low-fat spread 25g plain flour 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped 100g frozen peas 1 pinch ground black pepper 300g coley fillet thawed if frozen, skinned and cut into chunks 25g reduced fat mature Cheddar cheese grated

What to do: 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. 2. Boil the potatoes for 15-20 minutes until tender, then drain them and mash with 2 tbsp of the milk. 3. Put the remaining milk, low-fat spread and flour into a saucepan and bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring continuously with a small whisk or wooden spoon until the sauce bubbles and thickens. Stir in the parsley (if using) add the peas and season with pepper. 4. Place the chunks of fish in an ovenproof dish, pour the sauce over, then top with mashed potato. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the surface. 5. Bake in the centre of the oven for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Serve with steamed or boiled broccoli. Suitable for freezing

Tips: 1. Use your choice of fish, such as cod, haddock or salmon. Look out for fish pie mix from the fresh fish counter, which is economical to buy. 2. If you like, make in individual ovenproof dishes to make serving simple. 3. Always grate cheese for cooking to make it go further. It will melt more quickly, too.

What can we do to help the Bees? Even though more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of the honeybee as an essential partner to human agriculture and a keystone of the environment, few people feel able to keep bees themselves. So what can you do for the bee? • Use your consumer power - Remember everything bees make royal jelly, propolis, honey, wax or pollen, they make for a reason so think and buy responsibly from local beekeepers. Local honey is thought to be better for you as it is made from the flora in your local environment, and you can ask the beekeeper about how their bees are kept. A worker bee will produce about a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime, so use it sparingly and treasure it! • Try to eat locally and organically – field studies have found that compounds found in some agrochemicals are accumulated in hives by the bees as they gather pollen and nectar, and that this is a factor in their present troubles. • Avoid using pesticides and read the labels on all your garden products. Insecticides can even be found in some types of compost. • Find out what plants suitable for your garden are also bee friendly and plant some. Bees need a diverse range of forage. Some seed packets have a bee friendly logo which can help you choose. • Keep an eye out for swarms in the spring, these are a real natural wonder to see. The bees are generally very docile while swarming but do call a local beekeeper who will try to find a hive to offer them. • Spend time observing bees – they are the best teachers about their needs. They can tell you what plants they like. If you have a hive nearby you can learn a lot from just watching the entrance. • Attend a course – learn about the life of the honeybee and how to be a bee guardian, or how to become a natural beekeeper on a course with the Natural Beekeeping Trust. You may like to attend the Natural Beekeeping Conference “The Future of Beekeeping” which promises a programme packed with prominent speakers and workshops for anyone with an interest in bees. Go to www.naturalbeekeepingtrust.org to find more information and courses, or to support our work and become a friend of the Natural Beekeeping Trust. Why Support Local Business? As we’re a local community magazine, we generally stick with local matters. However we decided to get in touch with ‘Retail Champion’ Clare Rayner. She’s spear-heading a national campaign, ‘Independent Retail Month’, which goes hand-in-hand with supporting local business. It is always good to be reminded of why this is important. She kindly agreed to tell us more: EG Living: What is Independent Retail Month about? How did it get started? Clare Rayner: Independent Retailer Month is a global “Shop Local” campaign that runs throughout July. The campaign highlights the important role smaller, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve, the local economy they contribute to, and in the retail sector as a whole. It was co-founded in the US in 2009 by Kerry Bannigan, CEO Nolcha Fashion Week, and Tom Shay, principal of Profits Plus. In 2011 I was invited by Kerry, to launch the campaign into the UK, taking it transatlantic. With Canada launching in 2012, and with conversations taking place

in Australia, Independent Retailer Month has grown to be a global movement to support ALL smaller, independent businesses who serve the consumer, be they online only, market traders or store based and across the wider sectors of retail, hospitality, leisure and travel. The initiative aims to: • impact the independent retail sector globally with relevant support, expertise and insights • connect consumers and communities with local retailers, reminding them of the benefits of shopping local; and • engage small business organisations, networks and thought leaders to promote the importance of independent retail to the global, national and local economies. EG Living: Why is it important that we support local businesses and the local high street? Clare Rayner: It’s no secret that the internet, particularly fuelled by the growth of mobile, the global economic downturn, and various other factors such as increasing rates and rents, lack of accessible parking and ease of access to out of town developments have had a profound change on the way consumers shop, increasing migration AWAY from our high streets and local community retail areas. In spite of the well-publicised difficulties on the high street there are still over 169,000 independent retail businesses in the UK, equating to 92% of all retail businesses. From fashion boutiques and art galleries to convenience shops and DIY stores, independent retailers form a valuable and treasured part of many communities. Smaller retailers are often the only route to market for start-up and independent designers, makers and producers, enabling them to

24 | July 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Clare Rayner

showcase their work and bring creativity, uniqueness and diversity to the high street. Of course retailers also need to buy services from a whole range of other businesses – shop fitters, graphic designers, accountants, electricians etc – so Independent Retailers are an integral part of local economies, servicing local people’s needs, generating local employment and buying products and services from local suppliers. EG Living: What benefits will we see in the community if we do so? Clare Rayner: More money spent locally means more support to the local economic eco-system. This leads to more thriving businesses, more employment opportunities, more business for other businesses. This then creates an upward spiral that ultimately makes your community a better place to live. With that in mind, try and support your local independent retailers throughout this July and beyond –find out more via www.independentretailermonth. co.uk or seek out your local independent shops using www. independentretailermonth.co.uk/ukshops With Thanks to Clare Rayner, The Retail Champion, Mentor & Author

The Olympic Dream!

As part of our series of articles about our fabulous Hockey Club, we ask Glenn Kirkham of Team GB his thoughts of a once in a lifetime event.

Profile questions:

Tell us about the buzz in the run up to the Olympics.

What is your goal for the British team?

Year of Birth & Birthplace?

It really is unbelievable, everybody wants to talk about it and we feel we are in a very lucky position to have the chance to play in a home Olympics. I really feel that London will stage a fantastic event and the British public will support it massively.

We feel that we have a really good chance of making the medal matches. We are going in to it aiming at Gold and until that goal isn’t achievable then that’s what we will target.

Why did you choose East Grinstead Hockey Club, what makes it special? After I left Loughborough University and moved to Essex I was faced with the task of choosing a new team. At the time East Grinstead had only been back in the Premier league for one season but you could see from the outside that there was great ambition. I met with Phil Coote (club captain), Mark Pearn (player coach) and Matt Jones ( manager) and I was left convinced that this was a hugely ambitious and professional club that were going places and I haven’t been disappointed.

What is your greatest challenge in preparation for Summer 2012? I think it’s the challenge of focusing on our team goals and performance during what will be a really hectic and pressured few months. It’s easy to get lost and carried away with all of the glitz and glamour of an Olympic Games and especially that of a home Olympics.

Tell us about the added pressures of 2012? This time we go in to the games with a real chance of winning a medal. In Beijing this wasn’t the case, we were very much an outside shot and in the end were really pleased with our 5th placed finish.

Who or where do you draw inspiration from? My parents. They sacrificed so much time during my childhood to help me achieve my dreams, forgoing holidays and time to themselves to taxi me all over the country. I will never be able to thank them enough.

Any message to young potential professional sports players in this area? There are some fantastic sports teams in the East Grinstead area with the central hub of the Saint Hill Sports Club providing fantastic facilities. I would say to make the most of these facilities, work hard and don’t expect anything to come easy.

The English Language:

is there method to the madness?

The word ‘peek’ was originally a dialect word in England that existed in only 3 pockets of East Anglia. It ‘travelled’ to America (some of the first immigrants came from East Anglia), gained popularity and eventually a few hundred years later became a well-used English word. 3 words which we believe to be exclusively ‘Australianisms’: ‘fair-dinkum’, ‘cobber’ and ‘no worries’ are more likely to have come from English dialectal expressions. The tendency for New Yorkers to pronounce words like ‘dog’ as ‘doo-awg’ apparently comes from second generation American Jews. In an effort to distance themselves from their parent’s Yiddish accents (which shortened the vowel sounds), they over-compensated by elongating these vowels sounds. So that coffee became coo-awfee, door became doo-ah and cab became kee-ab, etc.

Local History Notes DAISY STYLES & THE OLYMPIC GAMES OF 1936 by Dorothy Hatswell

As the Olympic Games comes back again to London for the third time, it is perhaps appropriate that we remember Maresfieldborn Daisy Styles, who was selected to compete in the Olympic Games of 1936 in Berlin, but was not allowed to go. Lilian Daisy Styles was born on June 20th 1905 in the parish of Maresfield – just north of Uckfield. Her parents Thomas and Caroline farmed at School House Farm, Stumble Wood near Birch Grove, Harold Macmillan’s estate on the edge of Ashdown Forest. The youngest of four children born to her parents after three boys, she was christened Lilian but seems to have always been called by her second name, Daisy. The family moved to Lingfield to the Bays, a smallholding growing fruit and vegetables for local markets. They were living there at the time that the

Lingfield Marathon was being developed. This is possibly where Daisy’s interest in long distance running was encouraged. Helping on her parents smallholding and having three older brothers to compete with, no doubt helped with the development of her stamina. She began to run half miles and was soon competing all over Sussex becoming a noted performer at this distances - the equivalent today of the 800 metres. She also competed very successfully in many cross country events and was the Sussex champion six times during the 1930s. The high jump was the discipline on which she was selected to go to Berlin and represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games of 1936. However it wasn’t to be. Her parents, particularly her father, strongly

DAISY STYLES continued disapproved of Hitler and the regime of the Third Reich – quite understandably we might add. He not only did not want to appear to support the event, as it could be taken as support for Hitler, but he was worried about Daisy’s safety. He refused to give his permission for her to go, which, as a minor, she needed. She actually reached the age of twenty one a few weeks before the Games themselves, but by then it was too late. One can only guess at Daisy’s reactions to this ultimatum. She must have been bitterly disappointed. However, it did not seem to breed any lasting resentment in her, towards her family. She continued for many years to help with growing the vegetables and then selling them in their small shop at 44 East Grinstead High Street, just behind Middle Row. However, she did have a reputation for being rather short with the customers…Perhaps it did affect her after all. While watching the start of the London Marathon this year, I was very interested to find that it was officially started by Dorothy Tyler. On August 9th 1936 she had the Silver medal in the High Jump Competition at the Olympic Games held in Berlin. Whether she took Daisy’s place or if they would have been together in the team, I have been unable to discover. Tyler, or Odam as she then was, jumped 160cms using a straight forward straddle jump. She was in later years to accuse Dick Fosbury of cheating saying “in my day your feet had to go over the bar first, not your head”. The winner of the Gold Medal in 1936, a Hungarian athlete by the name of Ibolyo Csak, cleared 162 cms (about five feet four inches) on her fourth attempt. Three athletes, including Tyler, had tied at 160cms and were all equal on countback, where previous failures were taken into account. All three were allowed a fourth

jump. Csak, the eventual winner, was the only one of the three to do it. Where Daisy would have come is impossible to predict, but it is fair to speculate that she might have won gold. The women’s high jump record now stands at 209 cms (seven feet). The Fosbury Flop being the preferred method, of course! It is interesting to note that this event could well have been watched by Winifred Wagner, the wife of the composer Seigfried Wagner, who were both friends of Hitler’s and certainly attended some of the Games. Winifred was orphaned at eight and brought up in St. Margaret’s Convent in East Grinstead. She may even have known the Styles family who were well known in the town at the time. Daisy continued to run and win crosscountry events until the start of the Second World War. When the war was over, she did not seem to have taken any further part in athletics. She worked in the family shop for many years, selling the fresh vegetables and fruit grown at their smallholding in Lingfield. Later, in the 1960s, the family purchased part of the Orchard Estate on the Holtye Road. They gradually found it difficult to compete with the prices in the supermarkets which were beginning to spring up all over the country. The smallholding began to diversify and concentrated on plants rather than produce. It became known as Orchard Nurseries which supplies their award-winning hanging-baskets to the East Grinstead Town Council. Daisy died in 1992, at the age of eighty seven. She never married but she had nieces and nephews, one of whom now continues the family tradition of plant-growing as proprietor of the nursery.

Surrey Spring Show 2012 NOW TAKING PLACE IN SUMMER! The Surrey Spring Show, the equine event held at Felbridge Showground, was postponed until Summer for obvious reasons: we all know how our Spring went… The New date is 21st July - from 9am. The Show was established last year by a group of friends & family who have all been touched by cancer and share in common a love of horses. The idea to raise money with a charity show began when dear friends Sam Holland & Sue Alkin were both diagnosed. A committee was formed and it went from there. Funds are being raised for The Royal Marsden Hospital and St. Catherine’s Hospice – much beloved by the people of East Grinstead. Amazingly Last year the inaugural Surrey Spring Show raised a staggering £16,000 which was donated to these charities. The event promises to, yet again, be a fantastic family day out, with show jumping, eventing competitions, raffle with superb prizes, a cake stall, hog roast, etc. For more information visit: surreyspringshow.org or phone: 01342 837688

EG4KIDZ Each summer the Tourism Initiative organizes a children’s competition encouraging a closer look at our Medieval town and what it has to offer. We hope to inspire children to go on to study the history of East Grinstead by introducing some child friendly historical facts and encourage them and their ‘adults’ to discover something they might not have known before. This year there are fun activities to complete, a word search, a dot to dot and a spot the difference all with an East Grinstead theme. The challenge involves a short trail along the London Road and High Street and for those children who complete the entry form and return it to the Tourist information desk in the Library, there will be a chance to win one of 3 cash prizes. Our three lucky winners will be invited to receive their prize from the Town Mayor in her parlour. The competition is suitable for children up to 11 and will be launched at the beginning of the school summer holiday on 16 July 2012. 38 | July 2012 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1890 Last month we asked residents with pastimes or hobbies, who were keen to let other residents know about these, to get in touch. Ian Morgan is a local dedicated art-lover, here he shares his love of art with this article about the woeful yet profilic life of one of the world’s greatest artists:

Fine Art however, sadly his teachers rejected his work. Having moved to Paris, in 1886, he was living with his brother Theo. That same year he met Paul Gaugin (another post-impressionist artist) and they become good friends. Two years later he left for Arles in the South of France. His move to Arles was prompted by a number of reasons including his failing health but it was also because he wanted to develop his art. His dream was to establish a “Studio of the South” in the Yellow House “la petite maison jaune”. In October of that year he was joined by Gaugin. Being opposite personalities, it was only a matter of time before they clashed. Gaugin was horrified by Van Gogh’s disorganised ways and untidiness together with his inability to handle money. Faced with the prospect of eating a hot meal or buying paint Van Gogh would often choose the latter. Having two individuals who were both opinionated and volatile was bound to end in trouble. In December 1889 the arguments reached a head which resulted in Van Gogh cutting off part of his own ear. There are many different accounts of how this happened, including Van Gogh threatening Gaugin with a razor, but ending up cutting himself. However, we will never be sure of the precise truth. After the turmoil he recovered but suffered with bouts of mental illness with hallucinations, hearing voices and seeing visions. Whilst at a mental institution he was free to paint and his work took

Van Gogh shot himself, “for the good of all” in a wheat field in Auvers in Southern France where he had moved to in 1890, he died 2 days later. Theo, to whom he had written almost every week since he had moved to Arles, said about his brother, “He has found the peace he never found on earth.” Theo died within months and the two brothers are buried side by side at Auvers. “When I started my plastering business at the beginning of 2010 I decided to advertise in ‘East Grinstead living’ as the cost was reasonable and it seemed like a good publication. Little did I know just how much of a good idea that was!! Over the following 6 months I would say that around 70% of my leads came from that one 1/4 page advert and when I heard that there was going to be another publication (Ashdown Forest Living) by the same people going out to another area, it was a no brainer to advertise in that one too!” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

Congratulations Chris A couple of months ago we ran an article about Chris Parfitt’s challenge to raise money for Blind Veterans UK. He got in touch with some feedback - below. The walk100 was last weekend & our team reached the 100km point in 22 hrs & 42 mins, we crossed the finish line at the Blind Veterans UK Centre in Ovingdean in 24 hrs & 16 mins. As a team we have raised over £2300 for the charity so far, www.justgiving.com/teams/pride-runs-deep. The last few hours & 15 miles or so really pushed us to the limit and it was just sheer guts & determination that got us to the finish. We all crossed the line with a great sense of achievement. 1: 2: 3:

Is your weight affecting your health? Weight problems are often triggered by puberty, pregnancy, menopause or simply ageing. In addition medication, stress, change in lifestyle, bad eating or drinking habits can also play a major part with weight problems. The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme addresses these issues resulting in clients losing weight at a rate which is very motivating. Key points of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme • Expected average weight loss of clients, 10-14lbs a month • Easy to follow • No pills, diet shakes etc. • One-to-one personalised support The most popular aspects of the programme are the quick weight loss, easy to stick to (clients constantly remark that they don’t feel hungry or have cravings) and the one-to-one support which is available 7 days a week.

Pam lost 4 stone, Andrew lost 2 stone “No previous diets

had ever worked – I

have an under-active thyroid, which didn’t

help. Rachel encouraged us all the way and her advice and suggestions were really easy to

follow – we didn’t find ourselves hungry or getting cravings.

The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme very quickly re-educated our diets but it wasn’t at all difficult to keep to. One happy side effect was Andrew‘s indigestion problems disappearing, while my blood pressure improved. We reached our target weights in less than five months but far more than that has been the way it has changed our lives and how we feel about ourselves. A very big personal thank you to Rachel for turning us around.”
