“Mr Nash carried out a series of works projects that included roof tile and guttering replacement; application of hanging tiles to the rear of the property and groundworks/erection of a shed and patio area in the rear garden. “The works were finished to schedule, for reasonable fees and to a good standard. I was very pleased with the results. Throughout the contract, Mr. Nash and his colleagues behaved with care and consideration for both myself and my neighbours and were extremely professional in their conduct. “As a shareholder and director of a business for 10 years that was highly customer focused, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Nash for future projects. I found him to be organised, methodical and communicative about the progress of works with both the client and his staff and he managed the projects in a most professional manner, to budget and to time.” — Dr. C Scott

Dear Residents, Whats inside this month Welcome to the July issue. Fingers crossed the fabulous weather has continued on into this month! In this issue we take a look at the famous Sackville name and how it came to be so important in this area. A new book about the Guinea Pig's was recently released and we have a Q&A with the author, who has a very interesting view on how important East Grinstead people themselves were to the war effort. Please do send through any good local news for us to publish.

Lemon & Raspberry Trifles A fast Summer after dinner treat that takes minutes to make. Serves: 4 adults • Preparation time: 15 mins • Cooking time: 0 mins

METHOD 1. Beat the soft cheese with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy, then stir in the yoghurt. Add 1 tbsp of caster sugar with the lemon zest and juice, mixing well. 2. Put half the raspberries to one side, then puree the rest with a blender or simply mash them with a fork or potato masher. Stir them into the whole raspberries and add the rest of the caster sugar. 3. Divide the sponge fingers between 4 serving glasses or ramekin dishes and spoon half the raspberry mixture on top. Now spoon the lemon mixture into the dishes and finish off with the rest of the raspberry mixture. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve.

INGREDIENTS • 250g soft cheese • 125g vanilla yoghurt • 30g caster sugar • ½ lemon zest finely grated & 1tbsp juice • 250g frozen raspberries defrosted, fresh would also work well • 8 sponge fingers broken into pieces

Tip 1: If you make this recipe without the sponge fingers, it’s suitable for anyone with a wheat allergy too. Tip 2: Try serving the raspberry mixture spooned over fresh fruit, low-fat natural yoghurt, ice cream or hot porridge - it tastes superb!

This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life ‘Supermeals for under a fiver’ cookbook

Sackville School Win Again

The East Grinstead Music & Arts Festival celebrated its 50th year last month! Congratulations! The festival has helped to keep East Grinstead strong in the field of the arts throughout the years.

East Grinstead’s Sackville School, has won again! The school was awarded ‘Leading Edge Status’ for the second year running by the national SSAT (The School, Students and Teachers Network). The award reflects strong teaching quality and results. It’s a huge honour that the school has won this for the second year in a row. Headteacher Mr Grant and Mrs Rawsthorne accepted the award at a recent ceremony in London. This achievement is based on significant positive progress between children leaving year 6 at primary school to taking their GSCEs at secondary school. Sackville’s sixth form was also the top-performing state provider in West Sussex last year. Congratulations to Sackville for a welldeserved award!

Last month a giant of the screens, Sir Roger Moore, sadly passed away. Here is a photo of him from the early 1960s, when he visited the Queen Vic. He’s pictured in the children’s Peanut ward. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Increased Chances of Survival

Should anyone suffer a cardiac arrest while visiting the East Court Estate in East Grinstead their chances of survival are now greatly increased. A new defibrillator has been installed outside the public toilet block. The lifesaving device can be accessed by code after a call to the

emergency services should the operator deem it an appropriate course of action. There has been a campaign since 2015, spearheaded by East Grinstead's Steve Morris, to increase awareness of CPR and defibrillators. He has dedicated many hours to see

24/7 Defibrillators installed in and around the town for community use. The bright yellow boxes can now be seen in various locations including the High Street, Queen's Walk, the library and Estcots Primary School. Steve's own life was saved by one operated by quick thinking staff at the Kings leisure centre. Please support the campaign in any way you can and those wanting to be trained in the use of the defib. You can find information on Facebook "Survival Can be Shocking. The device at East Court was jointly funded by East Grinstead Town Council and Mid Sussex District Council and was officially unveiled last month by East Grinstead Town Mayor, Cllr Mrs Julie Mockford and Chairman of MSDC Cllr Bruce Forbes.

The East Grinstead Living will be printing more local good news stories in the coming months. If you have any which you’d like to send us, please email info@egliving.co.uk. Thank you.

The Sackville Name By all accounts he seems to have been of a multi-talented persona, with fingers in 'many pies'. In 1561, with Thomas Norton, he penned the first English play 'The Tragedy of Gorboduc', to be written in blank verse. This type of poetry doesn't rhyme but has a regular metre - since then it has become the most common form of poetry in the English language. The play deals with the consequences of political rivalry, of the consequences of dividing a kingdom... it was perhaps rather daringly shown to Queen Elizabeth who, at that time, still had a somewhat shaky hold of her crown. He also contributed to the 1563 edition of The Mirror for Magistrates, with the poem Complaint of Henry, Duke of Buckingham. Sackville's first important literary work was the poem Induction, which describes the poet's journey to the infernal regions, where he encounters figures representing forms of suffering and terror. The poem is noted for its sombre stateliness of tone.

Thomas Sackville (1536 - 1608) The Sackville name winds its way prominently through the history books of this area as well the greater parts of Sussex and Kent. Perhaps the most important figure in the names ascendency is Thomas Sackville (1536 1608), MP for East Grinstead, who became a prominent figure in COMMUNITY the Court of Elizabeth I. His BUSINESS DIRECTORY father Richard Sackville's seat of power crossed over territories in

both Sussex and Kent, including nearby Penshurst and Buckhurst. Richard was also Ann Boleyn's (the Queen's mother) first cousin, a fact which was not lost on the new Queen. Thomas was educated at both Cambridge and Oxford and first entered the House of Commons as a young man in 1558, and in 1559 he was elected MP for East Grinstead.

As a definite 'nod' from the Queen, in 1567 he was created Baron Buckhurst, the Buckhurst estate is of course just down the road, near Withyham. But his first very important stately mission came in 1571, when he was sent to bear Queen Elizabeth's congratulations to Charles IX of France on his marriage to Elizabeth of Austria, and most Continues over the page. THE SACKVILLE NAME CONTINUED importantly to negotiate the matter of an alliance between Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Anjou, brother of the French king. In 1586 he was chosen for the sorry but important task of telling Mary, Queen of Scots of her death sentence. In 1587 he went as ambassador to the United Provinces (the Netherlands), upon their complaint against the Queens favourite John Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Even though history recalls he performed his duties with trust and integrity, Dudley had sufficient influence over the Queen to have him recalled and ordered to confinement in his own house, for nine or ten months. Officially he received the Queen's displeasure by what she called his, "shallow judgement in diplomacy". 5 years later however, in 1591, Sackville took the prestigious title of Chancellor of the University of Oxford, better still in 1599 he became Lord Treasurer, a position he kept until his death on account of his capable, if uninspired, financial management skills. He made quite some personal acquisitions: in 1604, Sackville bought Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells. His other houses included Knole House (granted to him by the Queen), in Sevenoaks, and Michelham Priory, in East Sussex, as well as Dorset House, near Fleet Street, London - later burnt down in the Great Fire of London.

Thomas Sackville’s Armour It is now part of the Wallace Collection in London. The next feather in his bow came when Queen Elizabeth acquired the manor of Bexhill in 1590 and granted it to Sackville.

Thomas Sackville's land dealings in many counties amassed a considerable fortune for his family, he had investments in the iron foundry business which was of course the main industry of the Ashdown Forest area.

After Elizabeth's death and James I's ascension to the thrown in 1603, he was created Earl of Dorset by the new king. The name 'Dorset' duly adorns various street, pub, etc. in the Sussex area (a paradox perhaps...) and this can be traced back to this title being conferred on Thomas.

Snubbing the grand and principal house at Knole. Thomas also drew up plans for a new, far more elaborate mansion on the Buckhurst Estate, than the existing family house. The current beautiful Buckhurst mansion's origins lie in this early 17th century time period based on Thomas's plans (though later modified by his son Robert).

In 1608, he died suddenly at the council table, having suffered a stroke (referred to then as "a dropsy on the brain"). To mark his significance in the public life of this country, his funeral took place at Westminster Abbey, though he was buried in the Sackville family vault at Withyham parish Church.

In around 1587, he was granted a royal license to commission a suit of armour from the royal workshops at Greenwich. In the world of armory this finely etched, blued and gilt armour, is one of the COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY most well-loved and best-preserved examples of the Greenwich school of armour-making known to exist.

THE SACKVILLE NAME CONTINUED His son Robert Sackville, duly became the 2nd Earl of Dorset, inheriting among other estates, Knole in Kent and Buckhurst in Sussex, along with his considerable fortune. Thomas's oldest boy had been educated by Roger Ascham who had also tutored the Queen, Robert had gone onto the bar. During his life Robert also served as MP for various Sussex constituencies but perhaps unlike his father, appears not to have taken much part in the no doubt lively debates in the committees on which he served. However to his credit he was known for his philanthropy and for this East Grinstead itself will be forever indebted to him. Sadly Robert was not to enjoy his wealth and position for long, dying less than a year after his father in 1609. He is interred in the church of St Michaels, Withyham in his family's elaborate tomb, still there to this day.

Š With thanks to East Grinstead in Bloom. Photo by Andrew Taylor, Heypresto.uk

Sackville College Robert died of the plague (which was soon to be the scourge of Europe ), he was probably aware that his own death was imminent and he drew up his will only ten days before. In common with many rich and God-fearing men of the age, Robert felt it appropriate to set aside some provision for the poor. He left a sum of ÂŁ1000 to erect an almshouse for twenty-one men and ten women to live in East Grinstead. He gave very precise details of the way it was to be set up. He left the task of building the college to his executors and his son, Richard. Sackville College which stands at the eastern end of the High Street is a magnificent Jacobean house. The Earl retained one wing for his use when in the area. This has now been converted into flats and the building is still serving the same purpose as it did four hundred years ago. Now that's a legacy!

100 Years of Guiding the Girls

Classes for Drilling, 1st Aid and Signalling were being arranged and two patrols, the Buttercups and the White Rose were formed.

The first recorded meeting to discuss the start of Girlguiding in East Grinstead took place on October 19th 1917 where it was decided to form three companies of girlguides in East Grinstead. A committee was formed and called the East Grinstead Local Association. On 29th October they decided to form one company in each parish and one in Ashurst Wood.

Therefore the 1st EG Guides opened between 29th October and 23rd November 1917. Years later in August 1944 a very special moment came when Lady Baden Powell visited East Grinstead and

Standen, there is a lovely entry in the Turners Hill Robin Patrol Log book about the day including 3 photos: they had a picnic in the garden under trees. Today there are rainbows (5-7), brownies (7-10), guides (10-14), the Senior Section (14-24) and volunteer leaders/ helpers (18+). Girlguiding East Grinstead Division covers the whole of East Grinstead, Felbridge and Ashurst Wood.

On 23rd November they reported that the Ashurst COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Wood company was starting. Living living

A New book about the Guinea Pig Club:

The Beauty Shop Here is a short synopsis followed by a Q&A with the author, Suzy Henderson, who delves into some of the important heritage of our town. “A man disfigured in battle fights that battle the rest of his life.” England, 1942. After three years of WWII, Britain is showing the scars. But in this darkest of days, three lives intertwine, changing their destinies and those of many more. Dr Archibald McIndoe, a New Zealand plastic surgeon with unorthodox methods, is on a mission to treat and rehabilitate badly burned airmen – their bodies and souls. With the camaraderie and support of the Guinea Pig Club, his boys battle to overcome disfigurement, pain, and prejudice to learn to live again. John ‘Mac’ Mackenzie of the US Air Force is aware of the odds. He has one chance in five of surviving the war. Flying bombing missions through hell and back, he’s fighting more than the Luftwaffe. Fear and doubt stalk him on the ground and in the air, and he’s torn between his duty and his COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY conscience. Shy, decent and sensible Stella living

What drew you to want to write this novel about the war and in particular the Guinea Pigs?

Charlton’s future seems certain until war breaks out. As a new recruit to the WAAF, she meets an American pilot on New Year’s Eve. After just one dance, she falls head over heels for the handsome airman. But when he survives a crash, she realises her own battle has only just begun. Based on a true story, "The Beauty Shop" is a moving tale of love, compassion, and determination against a backdrop of wartime tragedy. Q &A with Suzy: Living

28

I first came across the story of Archibald McIndoe and the GPC while researching Bomber Command and something told me it was too important to leave. It wasn’t so much McIndoe’s innovative and pioneering approach to plastic surgery and burns care, but his overall attitude to the care of the servicemen involved. Where else would you find beer kegs on a hospital ward? Archie was a colonial and an outsider in a foreign country but he made sure he fitted in while not bowing down to any man, least of all his superiors. That made him interesting. The way he cared for the servicemen at the Queen Victoria Hospital during WW2 was fascinating and illustrated Enquiries: 01342 300152

an early holistic model of care as he concerned himself not only with the men’s physical recovery but with their social and psychological care too. Some of the men referred to Ward 3 as the ‘beauty shop’ and, as they said, it was “where they sent you to be made up again”. They demonstrated such humour even at the darkest of times and would continue to do so throughout their lives, especially at every annual get together which became known as the infamous ‘lost weekend.’ Their story is undeniably remarkable and one to be relayed over and over, their service, sacrifice and bravery remembered.

What was your biggest inspiration? It’s a difficult question to answer, but I’d have to say, Archibald McIndoe. When he first arrived in London in the early 1930s, he encountered disabled beggars on the streets and he discovered that they were veterans of the Great War. That image haunted him and when WW2 broke out, he swore that the men in his care would all go on to lead full lives. He was determined they would not be cast out and forced to beg to survive. When I read that, something changed, and I began to understand McIndoe the man, and what drove him, and that was both inspiring and enlightening.

It's your debut novel, was it difficult to get it off the ground? Well, I have no doubt that it would have been, had I pursued the traditional publishing route which can often take many months or years. I was ready to release the book in 2016, a year that coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Guinea Pig Club. It seemed to me to be the ideal time and so I decided to self-publish. Once I began promoting the novel I was surprised at the interest shown. Following the release, the book has received much positive feedback which has been amazing.

What message does it give to the people of East Grinstead? When I wrote the book, my main intention was to COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY highlight this remarkable story and to raise the profile of the club and the work of Sir Archibald Living living

McIndoe. East Grinstead is the ‘town that did not stare’ and will soon be at the centre of a new movie about the club which is fantastic news. I feel the book serves as a reminder of the town’s heritage and of the most wonderful acts of humanity that arise during wartime. During the war, people had to cope with so much suffering and trauma, from bombing raids to the loss of loved one's serving abroad. While the majority were keen to ‘do their bit’, the community of East Grinstead stretched themselves further and became involved in the rehabilitation of disabled and severely disfigured servicemen. This was a time when these same men were being ridiculed elsewhere, such as in London, and people were callously stating they ought to be ‘locked up.’ When Archie learned of this behaviour, he went out and gave talks to the local community and explained the work he was doing. He asked the people to take these airmen under their wings and to look them in the eye. The response was overwhelming and offers of help and support soon flooded in. This is a heritage East Grinstead will always be proud of. The town folk took the first steps towards inclusion and in dispelling myths about disabilities. Acceptance was key, and the town worked their magic marvellously and came to accept the guinea pigs, just as Archie had asked them to. Can you imagine how it feels to be handsome one day and burned to a crisp and completely unrecognisable the next, following a dogfight with the Luftwaffe? It’s horrendous at any age, but especially at eighteen or nineteen when you’re barely out of boyhood. The community of East Grinstead helped shape the lives of many burned, injured and disfigured men. It was a small step to take but one that meant the world to those servicemen. I’d like to think that The Beauty Shop will contribute towards keeping this history alive while illustrating the most wondrous and kind acts that come from such horrific, traumatic times. While many of the 649 members of the Guinea Pig Club sustained life changing injuries, the intervention of Archie, his team and an entire town was equally life changing, in a positive way. EG's Young Entrepreneurs finals. The team were up against 5 other companies from different parts of Sussex.

Imberhorne School Year 12 students reached the 'Young Enterprise' regional final with a new company. Their business idea is a revision tips book: RIPPS which stands for Revise, Improve, Practice, Perfect, Success. The young enterprise company they formed is made up of 13 students aged 16-17. The group started in September with the product's slogan, ‘a guide for students written by students’. Each of them wrote a page for the book, designed it all themselves and instructed an outside printing firm to print it. The idea was to help alleviate some of the pressures on students over the exam period. The first final was Mid Sussex, Crawley and Horsham area COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY back in March in Burgess Hill. The team won ‘Best Overall living

Company’, which meant they progressed to the Sussex finals. In addition they also won 'Best Innovative Product', 'Best Trade Stand' and 'Best Presentation'. The Sussex finals were held on Wednesday 3rd May. Here, the team won ‘Best Product’, ‘Best Presentation’ and came runner up for ‘Best Company’, which meant they progressed to the South East Regional

The South East Regional finals were held last month in Dorking. Here 7 other teams from across the South East competed to win ‘Best Company’ and move onto the national finals. Although the team didn’t win they were placed in the South East's top 3 by winning ‘Best Presentation’. The team has greatly progressed, their confidence, presentation skills and teamwork skills have strengthened so much and they are all very proud of what they have achieved. They still have a few books left to sell, so if anyone knows someone that is going into exam years next year they can email rippsrevisiontips@ gmail.com to place an order.

HANDY HOUSEHOLD TIPS Use a hard scrubber or old toothbrush, after scrubbing in leave for 15 minutes and then rinse off (of course, take proper precautions to protect yourself when using bleach). You'll have a renewed finish!

HANDY HOUSEHOLD TIPS

CLEAN YOUR MICROWAVE WITH VINEGAR & STEAM Get a microwaveable bowl or glass measuring cup. Fill it with two cups of water and a two tbsp of vinegar, add a toothpick (Which helps the water to boil safely as it breaks the surface). Place the bowl in the microwave, run it on high for 5 mins and then leave it with the door closed for a further 2 mins. Carefully remove the turntable and sponge down the inside. Voila! A clean inside without the need for chemicals.

GREASE STAINS Those grease stains on your clothes aren’t permanent – use chalk to get them out.

GROUT CLEANER Use 1/4 bleach to 3/4 bicarb soda to make an fabulous paste that restores your grout.
