Hedgehogs are one of Britain’s most treasured animals with an important role in our heritage and environment.
earthworms and caterpillars also make up their diet: the perfect pest-controllers! The first step in helping hedgehogs: you need creepy crawlies.
Over the past 50 years, we’ve seen various declines in Britain’s plant and animal species and the hedgehog has not gotten off lightly. Hedgehog numbers have fallen by 30 percent in just over 10 years to about 1 million.
Breeding During the breeding season amorous hedgehogs can be found circling each other with snorts and grunts. Their young are usually born from May onwards in litters of up to five and leave the nest after four weeks. Baby hedgehogs (or hoglets) are born with their spines sheathed beneath their skin which then emerge a few hours after birth.
The plight of the prickly creatures in rural areas is particularly bad, as hedgerows and field margins have been lost to intensive farming with large-scale pesticide use greatly reducing food sources – they are disappearing from our countryside as fast as tigers are worldwide.
Hedgehog Delicacies items you’ve seen Tick off the menu
But! A glimmer of hope with populations in urban areas starting to recover as people take proactive steps to reverse the trend. We are hoping some of our readers in the East Grinstead area, whether rural, semi-rural or suburban can give them a small (or big) helping hand, even a single simple action could assist. Incredibly hedgehogs travel between 1-2km per night over homes with gardens as big as 10-20 hectares; they range over entire housing estates and neighbourhoods. Gardens, hedgerows, parks and cemeteries are all important habitats. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY They are famous for eating slugs and snails, but eat many other invertebrates: beetles,

Plus: Check bonfires before lighting; Keep your gardens green – paving and decking over gardens reduces hedgehog habitat; Keep plant netting, tennis nets and household rubbish above ground level to prevent entanglement; and help hedgehogs out by putting out small amounts of wet cat and dog food. Keep an eye out for people doing work on their gardens, or using fencing contractors - this is a prime time to get a hedgehog hole put in and influence connectivity.
Hibernation
wildaboutgardens.org.uk
While many animals have adapted to cope with the harsh conditions of winter, hedgehogs are one of only a handful of UK mammals to truly hibernate, along with bats and dormice, feeding intensively beforehand.
How can you help? Avoid the use of pesticides: please ditch the slug pellets and avoid pesticides, let hedgehogs do pest control for you. Leave a ‘wild corner’ in the garden: Create nesting opportunities by creating log and/or leaf piles. Hogs love apple and cherry leaves, and hawthorn and honeysuckle prunings make good structural supports. So please don’t clear all of these away!
and a wide range of plant types. Particularly those that help our insects… Don’t be afraid to let your grass grow a little wild in areas and leave some leaf litter. Small hedgehog holes can be cut into fences to allow them to pass through gardens during their necessary nightly journeys. Make water safe: hedgehogs are great swimmers but can sometimes struggle to climb out of steep-sided ponds
We hope our readers can do a little something to help these lovely creatures out. For more information see: hedgehogstreet.org. We would like to thank the RHS for providing information to put this article together.

Championing Education a much more comfortable space.
5 years ago, Phillipa Jacobs visited Chanzige Primary School in Southern Tanzania. She found, like many of the schools in Tanzania, it was tremendously underresourced, where pens, pencils and paper were a bonus few could obtain. With no electricity, the school struggled to deliver even a basic curriculum. Despite these hardships, the children were very happy, desperate to learn and viewed education as a privilege. When she returned to East Grinstead, she set out to try and make a small difference to these children's lives, by setting up a small local charity, Champion Chanzige - the charity will incidentally remain small with minimal overheads, no salaries or rent payable; so almost 100% of donations can go straight to help the children.
made in the past 5 years which we’ve previously reported on, but here is the latest update:
‘Secondly we managed to create a library. Chanzige primary school is made up of two schools, A and B, and is situated very close to the secondary school. A building was chosen to renovate and, as always, once work began it was completed very quickly. The library is open five days a week and is in constant use. It was officially opened by a national minister and is the first library to be constructed in this district’.
‘Over the last year Champion Chanzige have undertaken a couple of large renovation projects. They have managed to renovate three classrooms, giving the students a safe, bright space to work in. The floors were levelled and the roof replaced, but the thing that made the biggest difference was the windows being enlarged, creating a great deal more light and allowing a breeze through the classroom, thus providing
If you think you would like to help make a difference, the children of Chanzige would be very grateful. You can follow the charity on Facebook and find out about all their local fundraising events, for instance this month they are having a fabulous camping day in Kent with 55 pitches. www.championchanzige. com, Tel: 01342 323360, Championchanzige@gmail. com.

COLOUR & TEXTURE ABOUNDS
This Year’s Soft Furnishing Trends By Nikki Mitchell, Sofas & Stuff Well this year minimalism has been well and truly shoved out the way by maximalism! Chintz and clashing colours and patterns are all the rage and velvets don’t show any signs of being a passing phase. This may well sound a bit daunting particularly when it comes to choosing large items like sofas that you want to keep and adapt to future colour schemes. Fortunately there are ways to achieve this look; you can’t go wrong by applying layers and layers of colour and texture. Start with pastels (another hot trend) as a base, use soft sage, sand or very pale pink and then add oversize, squashy scatters in bold colours or prints.
You can do the same with walls, keep them pale but interesting and then add colourful blinds or even just trims to curtains. Pom-Pom fringing is making itself well and truly seen on accessories.
COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY
Botanical prints are very popular this year and work perfectly with colourful velvets, take a look at these gorgeous ones on the cushions and chairs we are doing in collaboration with The Pink House. Living

THIS YEAR’S SOFT FURNISHING TRENDS
Fortunately, this look is possible to achieve and would still be practical as there are lots of stain resistant, hard wearing fabrics available that won’t break the bank! Choosing a colour scheme can be a bit daunting if you are starting from scratch, so our advice is don’t stray too far away from what you already love. Take a look in your wardrobe and see what colours you choose to wear and build from there.
Add some throws in clashing patterns, some bold, bright accessories and a statement rug and you will be embracing the current ‘more-is-more’ approach to decorating. If colour is not for you then focus on texture, start with warm greys and mix with natural earthy tones. Contrast linen with woven scatters or velvet fabrics with chunky knitted monochrome throws.
Alternatively come in to see us at Sofas & Stuff in Eridge, near Tunbridge Wells (20 mins from East Grinstead) with some photos of your home and we will happily help you.

NO TIME TO CLEAN? Follow our speed cleaning tips for more free-time (or me-time): • The best way to start a fast clean is by clearing clutter off all surfaces and floors and tucking everything away (even if some has to re-emerge later), then always start cleaning ‘from the top down’. • When vacuuming, start at the far end and work your way out of the room, this set procedure will save time on overlapping work. • Vacuuming your furniture instead of using a cloth: use the crevice attachment for the back, sides and trim and the soft brush attachment to clean leather. • Give your bath and shower a quick spray down after each use… this will stop dirt building up and keep it hygienic…but most importantly save on lots of scrubbing later. • Fast dust! Using your vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment can give you a fast dust in corners of the room and ceilings and anywhere where dust has really built up – for a proper dust however, finish surfaces with a large cloth duster, keep folding it to get maximal use but remember to shake it out well away from the house! • Use a good quality micro-fibre cloth to freshen up marks on walls…this can surprisingly make a room feel a lot cleaner in a short space of time. • Finally investing in a good vacuum cleaner can COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY revolutionise your weekly clean and make it much faster! And no we don’t have shares… Living

Curated by Shrinking Space, The Wonder Project will deepen your connection to this historic landscape and challenge you to become more mindful of the intricate relationships within nature. Unfolding along a two-mile journey towards sunset you will encounter new soundscapes, sculptures and art installations inspired by Wakehurst’s botanic plants and the scientific research carried out in the Millennium Seed Bank, and across Kew’s global network. This quest for knowledge, and much of the research undertaken at Wakehurst is underpinned by an endeavor to keep humanity from the brink of ecological collapse. The Wonder Project will explore how our sense of wonder can help protect our collective future – by listening to indigenous communities, searching for crop wild relatives to safeguard domesticated species, and banking billions of seeds, whose homelands are in decline. This unique evening will question our evolving and complex relationship with nature and invite you to wonder, to reshape assumptions. To wonder is to be curious, to be inquisitive - to uncover the how and why; the scientist wonders, the artist wonders. Leave your preconceptions at the door, venture off the beaten track and seek out the surprising in this awe-inspiring landscape - from rare seeds to the tallest, enigmatic trees. Beth works the full day every Wednesday including setting up and clearing up and at the time of nomination she had contributed over 119 hours in total. Sarah Howland who runs the café said: ‘Beth has proved to

Richard Leman EAST GRINSTEAD HOCKEY LEGEND
Last month, East Grinstead’s very own Olympian Richard Leman, one of the town’s longest serving players was awarded Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's 2018 Birthday Honours List, receiving the honour for "Services to Hockey".
Richard was a member of ‘that’ gold medal winning team in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games - when golds for Great Britain were not quite as lucrative as they are in this day and age! They beat Australia in a thrilling semifinal and went on to beat West Germany in the final, during which the famous Olympic quip was voiced by BBC commentator Barry Davies: ‘Where were the Germans — but frankly, who cares?’. Richard went on to Captain Great Britain and England from 1988 to 1990, finishing in the Pakistan World Cup in
5th place. Having amassed 228 International Caps, at that time he was the most capped England and Great Britain player ever. In tandem with his international career, Richard was pivotal in East Grinstead's emergence as a solid homegrown club, winning the National Cup with them in 1983, the National League in 1985, plus being a member of EG’s first National Indoor title team in 1986. The club has gone on to win the title 11 times for the men's side and recently for the first time with the women. Richard's dedication to
Richard’s involvement in Hockey is nothing short of immense and spans decades: Richard went to his first Olympics in 1984, securing bronze alongside fellow East Grinstead team-mate Ian Taylor, beating Netherlands in a thrilling match for which he was awarded ‘Player of the Year in 1984’. Two years later, he won silver with the England squad at the 1986 Hockey World Cup in London, COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY narrowly losing to Australia in the final. living

RICHARD LEMAN CONTINUED
our local club was no less committed off the field, than on; he took the chairmanship of the hockey club for 5 years in the 1990's, subsequently forming EG Sport's Club's Charity which owns the land and infrastructure across what is our multi-sport site at Saint Hill - including cricket, lacrosse, netball, squash and of course, hockey. Richard subsequently served as Chairman of the EG Sports Club in the noughties from 2003 until 2010, a driving force behind its scaling and modernisation. Notwithstanding his local involvement, Richard has also served as President of Great Britain Hockey for 10 years until 2017, including through the London 2012 Olympic Games. At the same time representing hockey at the National Olympic Committee. Richard’s selfless, volunteering-spirit, willingness to guide the helm and enjoy the successes of all teams he is involved in is nothing short of immense. A most deserving award to a local hero! We are very pleased to bring you a Q&A with Richard, exclusively for our readers:
What was your reaction to receiving the award and why do you think COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY it was bestowed particularly now? living
Running through East Grinstead with the Olympic torch in 2012 for the London Olympics It was a feeling of great surprise and gratitude to England Hockey for putting me forward. I recently concluded my ten year term as President of Great Britain Hockey which was perhaps why the award was bestowed at this point. Whilst it is a personal recognition for me as someone who particularly enjoys giving time back to sport in general, it really is an acknowledgement to all those people who do what I do and volunteer their time for the benefit of others. I have been lucky to work with some amazing people.
Having dedicated so much time and effort to the East Grinstead Hockey Club, what do
you feel the future holds for the club and why is it so dear to you? East Grinstead Hockey Club has very close family connections for me and it has been an amazing place to play top quality hockey as well as enjoying the sociable aspect of taking part in team sport. My father was involved in buying the land where the hockey club is now and when he played there were always people who made the sandwiches, cut the grass and built the pavilion all for the love of it. I think that spirit is as strong now as it ever was. I sincerely hope this continues long into the future. Continues over the page.

RICHARD LEMAN CONTINUED
How do you feel Hockey has progressed as a sport from the late 80s to the present day?
What would you like to see local people do to support their famed local hockey club?
Hockey is a very different sport to the one I played in the 80s. My first full cap was on the outfield at Lord’s Cricket Ground in 1980 but now all matches are played on all weather pitches and the game is much faster and more skilful as a consequence. It is more exciting with more goals and less interference from the umpires which is much better for the spectators. The players are now genuine athletes and full time, whereas we were all working during the week and then went off to train at the weekends.
Hockey is a team sport and we are lucky to have a very large junior section at the EG Hockey Club. I would like to encourage anyone, young or old, to give hockey a go, the club is open to all. Like all the other community clubs in the town it needs financial and volunteer support from local businesses and supporters, so help is always welcome. Come and watch a game if you don’t fancy actually playing, there are matches most weekends including both our Men’s and Women’s 1st XIs who both play in the top leagues in the country.
Perhaps it is a good time to ask, what you would like your legacy to Hockey in England/Britain to be?
What does the future hold for you as regards the sport?
It would be fantastic to think that all the foundations which hockey has put in over the last 15 years do give the players a better chance of success on the international stage. As President of Great Britain Hockey I was in Rio when the women won gold and even managed to smuggle myself onto the team bus back from the pitch after they won which was an amazing COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY experience. My claim to fame is I was also on the gold medal winning bus in 1988!
In the very near future the Women’s World Cup is being held in London which will be a fantastic event. Beyond that I would simply like the sport to continue to develop so it is more televisual, allowing fans to follow their favourite top players. Personally, as well as watching events I hope to be able to continue to enjoy playing the occasional game for a good few years yet!

RECIPE CONTINUED
5. Take a non-stick pan over a medium heat, add a touch of olive oil, then oil and season the skin side of your fillets of bream, then place into the hot pan and leave to cook on the skin side for 4-5 minutes. When the skin is crisp and caramelised, turn over and switch off the heat, as the fish will finish off cooking in the residual heat of the pan. 6. Place the asparagus on the plate first, then add your crushed new potatoes with the sea bream on top, then add the fennel and pickled carrot to finish.

EXPLORE OUR NEARBY COUNTRYSIDE IN STYLE The ‘Boris Bikes’ of London are coming to the countryside with a new countrybike hire scheme. The idea is to encourage people to get into cycling whilst supporting rural tourism and local rural business. There will be small amounts of bikes, but in many places.
If you can’t get your bikes on the back of your car, this can be a perfect alternative! The response from people using the bikes so far has been fantastic. In order to use the bikes, you simply download the ‘Linka Go’ app. It is £8 for the first hour and then £2 each ½ hour after.
Our countryside is full of stunning vistas, woodland, rolling hills, meandering rivers and other hidden gems. People will be encouraged to use the venues as a base for the day and hopefully go in before or after their ride. All the bikes are also fitted with baskets and it is hoped that users will be encouraged to visit the local farm shop, bakery, village shop or rural businesses along their adventure.
A few of the places to find the bikes: Penshurst Place in Penshurst, The Spa Valley Railway in Groombridge, Tablehurst Farm in Forest Row, The Anchor Inn in Hartfield, The Nevill Crest & Gun in Eridge Enjoy the glorious Summer while it lasts! To find out more visit: www.countrybike.co.uk.

NEWS FROM FOREST ROW
A Village with no Children….Until it Snows
At a recent meeting in the village hall, a man stood up and took issue with me over the number of children in Forest Row.
club for those who can make it to the Community Centre and a delivery service for those who can’t. A Community Transport group take and return elderly people to clinic and hospital appointments and there is a wide range of clubs, churches & societies of all types for adults.
I could see his point of view. If you don’t go out until after the school bus and you’re not home until early evening, you’re unlikely to see many children. Until it snows.
Until now there has been no place for the children to play.
Forest Row village is thought by many to be largely middle aged, middle income and middle class. Indeed, the talented Julian Johnson who gave us the stunning mural on the charity shop said much the same thing. He saw the village as the three ‘M’s. He was right on one point. The mean age of the population here is 42yrs*.
There’s a growing groundswell of opinion that as our youth are welded to screens and social media, this isn’t healthy. This is why Venue on The Green was set up six years ago to provide them with a safe, social space in the heart of the village.
A newcomer to the village, it wasn’t until he took his morning walk one snowy winter’s morn. As he rounded the bend he was astonished to see, on the banks of the 17th, hundreds of young people hurtling down the white stuff on flash sledges, tin trays; even pieces of cardboard. At the top of the ridge, their parents, most of whom couldn’t get to work, stood muffled up, with mugs of coffee and snacks. One enterprising soul even brought street food. A party was in progress.
A management committee will oversee the running of it all and at last it won’t have to snow before we see the next generation enjoying themselves in our lovely village.
The fact is that the young here comprise 25%*. Total village population is 5,278*. You do the maths. And if you can’t be bothered, that’s 1,319 children under 19 years of age.
Monica Brown. Chair, Forest Row Youth & Community Company Ltd

You may know by now that we have fully funded this project. The Venue Implementation Group are working on the nuts and bolts of the proposed youth centre and there will be spades in the ground this summer. To complete our dream, the MUGA will be installed, the Green Gym and the Skatepark refreshed and what little space is left will be landscaped to welcome families into this much needed facility for everybody to use.
