Roofing

Book Now!

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

‘Explore, Dream, Discover’ (Mark Twain)

What will the hardest part of your journey be?

East Grinstead resident Daryl Farmer is undertaking an inconceivable, once-in-a-lifetime challenge next year, here he explains: Please describe your challenge In June 2014 I will be rowing solo across the Pacific Ocean from san Francisco to hawaii. no engine, no sails, just me, my boat Bojangles, and some oars! This is a distance of 2500 miles in a straight line, although I will be rowing much further as I will be pushed and blown off route on a regular basis. It will mean I will be out at sea, with no support, completely selfsufficient for around 3 months. I am using Weirwood reservoir for training and testing in the lead up to the crossing. You’ll be supporting ‘the shark and Coral Conservation trust’, ‘earthrace Conservation Organisation’ & ‘ the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer’. What was your reasons behind this support and the inspiration for this ‘row’? a few years ago two documentaries changed my life, The Cove, about the Taiji dolphin hunts, and sharkwater, about the scale of the shark finning problem. They made me get up and try to make some noise about these two cruel and very well hidden crimes against our precious ocean life. as for the actual row, it’s something

I’ve always wanted to do, and a few events last year gave me the final ‘push’ to actually commit to it. One was the sudden loss of my Mum to Kidney cancer, and the other was meeting some really inspirational people, mainly Pete Bethune from earthrace Conservation, who really inspired me to raise the bar and make a bit more noise for our oceans. Ocean awareness, and in particular shark finning and the Japan dolphin hunts is an easily hidden problem and it needs more exposure before it’s too late. People need to realise that we are an ocean planet, and we need healthy oceans for our survival. removing an apex predator from an ecosystem will always have a disastrous impact. sharks have been on this planet for over 400 million years, and in the last 50 years we have hunted many species to the brink of extinction. The kidney cancer link is obviously a very personal one to me since losing my mum to misdiagnosed kidney cancer last year. had I known what I know now (the earliest signs of this disease), I am convinced she would still be here to see me achieving this dream. I felt I needed to try to turn this loss into something positive, and hopefully this row can raise the profile slightly of the disease and it’s symptoms.

6 | June 2013 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

There are several aspects to this expedition which will be tough. Psychologically I think it will be very tough to row 10 miles in a shift, then get some rest and sleep, to wake up to find I’ve possibly drifted back 15 miles! It is very much an endurance event, to keep going, day after day, through blisters, salt sores, back problems, etc. is what will get me to the other side, and that is hopefully where my previous endurance running events may help me out. I also think it will be quite hard to adapt back to a ‘normal’ life after 3 months of isolation at sea. What support have you had? I am getting great support locally from Meridian FM to Weir Wood sailing Club and local schools. My aim is to get more schools involved, as this is the generation who can change the way we treat our oceans and the life within them.

‘Explore, Dream, Discover’ continued What further support are you looking for? I am also looking for some local companies to get behind this adventure, and take advantage of some incredible Pr that will come in the build up to this challenge. here is a fact to understand the enormity of this event and how it will be viewed: More people have gone into space than have rowed across an ocean. Black Peters Bar & Restaurant at the B R A M B L E T Y E H OT E L • F O R E S T ROW

The mysterious case of the complimentary meal “Come Watson, foul play may be afoot at Black Peters Bar & Restaurant.” “Mrs Hudson has often spoken of the fine foods at that establishment. Inexplicable it would appear that on completion of your chosen dish if ‘The Sign of the Hound’ appears, at random at the bottom of the plate, that dish will be ‘on the house’ so to speak. Not so much ‘Pot Luck’ as ‘Plate Luck’.” “Now if you would kindly hand the smelling salts back we may well catch the next carriage and chance our arm on this fiendish offer.”

On June 30th 1963 J.F. Kennedy, the 35th US President, came to Forest Row whilst visiting Harold Macmillan in Chelwood Gate, less than four months before his assassination. We are fairly secure in the knowledge that the President did not actually visit the Brambletye Hotel. However, we are serving a commemorative dish – JFK Clam Chowder served with corn muffins, one of his favourite meals.

LEMON POSSET TRIFLE simple seasonal recipe - serves 8-10

“It is, of course, a trifle, but there is nothing so important as trifles.” Sherlock Holmes, The Man with the Twisted Lip

Method 1. Peel the rind off the lemons with a vegetable peeler then squeeze juice from the lemons. 2. Put 1 litre of the cream in a pan with the rind and stir gently over low heat until the mixture steams, add sugar until dissolved.

Ingredients

3. Turn off the heat and add the lemon juice, then strain to remove rind. Put the ‘posset’ (mixture) in fridge to chill to room temperature.

7 unwaxed lemons 1.5 litres double cream 500 g caster sugar sponge fingers strawberries or fruit of choice

5. Chill in the fridge for at least 4/5 hours

4. Place the sponge fingers in the base of your serving dish and along the sides, when your posset is chilled as above pour onto the sponge. When ready to serve layer sliced strawberries on top, whip the remainder of the cream and cover. Optional: whip the cream with a little icing sugar and teaspoon of orange rind. With Grateful thanks to the Brambletye Hotel for providing this recipe.

Is your oversized fashionable handbag worth the pain?

C

hIrOPraCTOrs are warning about the risks to Women’s health posed by big hshoulder bags.

Oversized bags may be popular, but they can be a great source of pain as you tend to pack more in them. The straps, especially thin or chained ones can dig into your shoulders, interfering with circulation and causing tingling, numbness, and weakness in your arms and hands. Wearing a bag on your shoulder regularly or for long periods of time can lead to poor posture, as the body tries to compensate for the extra weight by leaning to one side. In addition to affecting your posture, bags that weigh more than 10 percent of your body weight can cause improper balance by interfering with your natural movement, thereby making you walk lopsided and increasing your risk of falling. Below are some tips to protect your back from heavy handbags:

• don’t carry your bag on the same shoulder all the time. Change the bag to the other shoulder frequently when walking. • Clean out any excess “stuff ” from your handbag. Less weight in your bag equals less pain for you. • Choose a bag with a long, wide strap. That way, you can put the strap over your head and wear the bag across your body, messenger style. This can distribute the weight of the bag more evenly. • Focus on your posture. Walk upright and don’t slouch – this will help keep your body balanced, despite carrying a heavy load. When choosing the latest fashion trends to follow, don’t forget to take your spine into consideration. you are welcome to call Family Chiropractic sussex, based locally, for further information and advice see ad on page opposite.

the rotary Club of east Grinstead Meridian has

reflected on what has been taking place over the rotary year - commencing July 2012. We’ve had a wide range of speakers & topics at our weekly meetings: Betty houghton from Bletchley Park, richard Leman (local Olympian) and the rnLI eastbourne coxswain among others. also young people, who we’ve sponsored, have talked about ryLa (rotary young Leaders awards) plus a Guide’s playground project in Borneo. For activities, we’ve had evenings of bowls and skittles. Our fundraising events have included a harvest concert with 100 school children in st. swithun’s church, a golf day at Lingfield Park, a Murder Mystery play, a presentation by a young man who visited the wreck of the Titanic in a submersible and a race night. In total over 1000 people attended these different events raising around £8000. The main beneficiaries have been Crawley Open house for the homeless, Mary’s Meals in Malawi, the Peanut ward at the Queen Vic and KidsOut. Local schools have been involved with the young Chef competition, young enterprise, Mary’s Meals, ryLa, additionally help has been given to poorer families to send their children on residential school trips. We had the pleasure to welcome Maya, a rotarian from Malawi, into the Club this year and induct two new members into rotary. Would you like to come and see if you would enjoy rotary? Golden Lion Children’s Trust east Grinstead resident Paulo dos santos was born in Lisbon and has been living here since 1999, now working as cabin crew for Thomson airways, Gatwick. he’s undertaking the London to Brighton Bike ride 13/14 July in aid of the Golden Lion Children’s Trust and is hoping to get some local support and sponsorship. The Golden Lion Children’s Trust is a Gatwick based charity, which was founded in 1973 by the employees of British Caledonian airways and others who worked at or were connected with Gatwick airport. The charity helps bring hope and happiness into the lives of underprivileged children and children with special needs in this area. The origins of the Trust go back to the early seventies when an aeroplane carrying only disabled children and their helpers went to Jersey for the day. none of the children had ever flown before or realistically could ever have expected to do so. since those early days, several thousand children have enjoyed an unforgettable day out thanks to the Trust.

Paulo says: ‘Working with Golden Lions Children Trust as a helper for the last 3 years has been amazing experience. It’s a huge privilege and gives happiness in my heart, a sign of a goal complete and the dedication and the positive energy you learn from it. It’s an amazing feeling when one single child smiles with happiness, it’s a light at the end of the tunnel that gives you strength for life! This is my 3rd year cycling the London to Brighton Bike ride. It’s such an amazing atmosphere, a personal achievement. The night Bike ride is a superb experience, leaving London at midnight and cycling all night long. In some places the only light is from the lights on the bikes and helmets. nearly halfway the sunset arrives behind the sussex hills with Brighton in sight on the horizon’. Paulo’s fiancé is organising a Tea and Cake open day afternoon, with Back shoulders Massage and nail Varnish to help to raise more fundraising for GLCT. Hotline for Turtle Doves The gentle purr of the turtle dove was once the sound of summer, enjoyed for a few brief months from early May until the birds’ departure back to africa in august. But their evocative call is becoming increasingly rare following rapid and perpetual population declines. Turtle doves were once widespread across much of england and Wales,

but the most recent figures show that the population in the south east, one of the last remaining strongholds, has fallen by 84 per cent since 1995. at this current rate of change, if we don’t help this species, scientists calculate there will be fewer than 1000 pairs by 2020.

To help reverse the fortunes of the turtle dove, Operation Turtle dove was launched last summer by the rsPB, Conservation Grade, Pensthorpe Conservation Trust and natural england. now in its second year, the project partners would like to remind members of the public to report their sightings of turtle doves to a special hotline, either by phone 01603 697527 or email turtledove@rspb.org.uk Last year, there was a great response and the hotline had over 425 calls reporting the elusive bird, which has helped map where the birds are breeding and highlight any hotspots to focus the project’s conservation efforts. Please spread the word in the ashdown Forest area this year - Thank you.

The East Grinstead Living has grown from strength to strength with 83% of our customers continually renewing because our advertising has proven results.

“When I started my plastering business at the beginning of 2010 I decided to advertise in ‘East Grinstead living’ as the cost was reasonable and it seemed like a good publication. Little did I know just how much of a good idea that was!! Over the following 6 months I would say that around 70% of my leads came from that one 1/4 page advert and when I heard that there was going to be another publication (Ashdown Forest Living) by the same people going out to another area, it was a no brainer to advertise in that one too!” Matt Merrell, MRM Plastering and Building

mums the Word... Need to De-Clutter? If the kids don’t want to get rid of their old toys try striking a deal which should work, tell them you’ll sell the best of their toys on ebay for them and they give them the money for their piggy banks but in turn they must agree to give the other old toys to the charity shop! (but only toys they no longer play of course...)

Gardening: Growing Snapdragons

A Mothers Quote of the month: ‘I love my mum. no matter what we go through, and no matter how much we argue, I know in the end, she’ll always be there for me’

Things to do on a rainy day Marble runs use old cereal boxes, loo rolls and other empty containers to make a home-made run. Build up as high as you want to - glue and sellotape should be enough to hold the pieces in place and you can use sturdier cardboard on the base to ensure it holds the upper levels securely. This is a great activity as you can add to it each day, creating new sections, slides and tubes as you go!

Dolly parachutes use old pieces of fabric and string to make dolly/teddy parachutes. Once they’re stitched together

snap dragons are brilliant fun for kids once they are fully grown. Be warned, they may well get snapped off and used as puppets... They smell lovely too. To start from seed, plant them in a tray and leave on a sunny window-sill. Cover the tray with clingfilm to keep in the heat and moisture. Plant out when they are big enough to handle. They grow best in full sun. as we’ve had a late spring this year you should still be able to sow in June for late blooms.

stand all of them on the window sill and launch them out to see which one wins.

Margarine tub boats Make margarine tub boats. you can do this in the sink, bath, pond. Card and old lolly sticks make great sails and if your little one is feeling creative let them paint and decorate them too.

Make a crazy cress head Get some dried out egg shells, paint a funny face on the surface, Once dry, fill wiith damp cotton wool and cress seeds and watch their crazy cress hair start to grow!

Gardening in June Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Annuals, Bulbs and Herbaceous remove fading and dead flowers on your annuals and herbaceous perennial plants. removing the finished flowers will promote a longer flowering season. Perennial and biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden. Continue to plant container grown perennials. always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of soil improver compost or well composted manure with your existing soil. spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.

Greenhouse On hot summer days ventilate as much as possible and damp down twice a day greenhouse floors and benches to prevent the air from becoming dry. shade plants from the midday sun and water as often as necessary.

Lawns Grasses go dormant in times of drought, but will quickly return to life with the autumn rains so a brown lawn is not necessarily a dead lawn !! If a lush green lawn is important to you, and you don’t mind mowing, water it regularly, and deeply. If a water shortage is expected, or you hate tending to grass, you may choose to just let your lawn go dormant, and water it as seldom as once

a month. raise the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass cools the roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer.

Roses Continue feeding roses with a general rose fertilizer. spray against pest and disease preferably with an organic product. dead head faded blooms on a regular basis.

Shrubs summer flowering shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. remove any dead or diseased branches.

Vegetables and Fruit now is the time to start your autumn and winter vegetables. sow seeds of onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early in the month. do not spray any fruit with insecticide if still flowering as this may harm pollinating insects leading to a poor fruit yield. Keep all fruit well watered during dry periods. new raspberry shoots can be tied in this month.

Miscellaneous Keep the weeding going before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again. Keep an eye out for insect, slug and snail or disease damage throughout the garden, and take the necessary steps to control the problem.

Local History Notes

Beeching With the recent opening of the extension of the Bluebell railway from Kingscote into east Grinstead, I thought this was a good time to write about dr. Beeching.

richard Beeching was born in sheerness, Kent, but when he was only a few months old, the family moved to Maidstone. richard, together with his three brothers, attended Maidstone Grammar school. he then went on to study physics and engineering at Imperial College London. after gaining a 1st Class honours degree, he commenced studying for his Ph.d. richard went on to assume various research posts, joining ICI. during World War II he was, at one point, loaned to the Ministry of supply. While in research he had made his mark and had come to the attention of sir Frank smith, a distinguished enginee. sir Frank was asked by ernest Marples, the Minister for Transport, to sit on the advisory board of the British Transport Commission. Though he declined he recommended richard Beeching for the position. Beeching accepted and became the first chairman of the British railways Board on June 1st 1961. his appointment was controversial, mainly because his salary was to match his salary at ICI. It was alot more than any other comparable government post carried and certainly far in excess of that of the Prime Minister’s. however, his appointment was ratified and he was given five years of absence from ICI to fulfill it.

they saw as draconian cuts. The loss of jobs resulting meant 70,000 people were now unemployed. This on top of the deprivation in the more rural parts of the country where there were limited ways to travel. Ten per cent of the country might have been car owners but it left a good deal of the other ninety per cent stranded. In spite of everything the cuts went through and Beeching himself was unrepentant. “I suppose I’ll always be looked upon as the axe man, but it was surgery and not mad chopping.” his second report in 1965 proposed a further loss of 7,500 miles of track. however it was a step too far for the Government this time, and so Beeching returned to ICI. he was made a Life Peer later that year and

at that time, in the early 60’s British rail were losing £42 million a year. Beeching established that 10% of the public owned a car and the railways were losing business because of it. he decided that the only course open to them, to halt the losses was to drastically cut the network. after the recommendations in his first report in 1963 were accepted and implemented, over 5000 miles of track were closed (about one third of the total) and over 2000 stations were shutdown. The Labour Party and the Trade unions fought bitterly to oppose what

took the title Baron Beeching of east Grinstead in the County of sussex. he and his wife, ella, had moved to east Grinstead a few years earlier and his use of the town’s name in his title suggests a certain affection for it. he lived in Brockhurst, on the Lewes road. It was the former home of Lord hanbury, a director of the pharmaceutical company, allen & hanbury. noted for its magnificent gardens, which Lord hanbury had improved greatly, Lord Beeching seems to have also taken a pride in them. he lived there for the rest of his life dying on March 23rd 1985 in the Queen Victoria hospital. The Beeching axe fell on east Grinstead, despite his affection for the place. The Tunbridge Wells to Three Bridges line was closed in 1966. The two lines were declared as ‘Linear Parks’ (part of which is

now Forest Way and Worth Way). The section which ran through the town, st Margaret’s Loop, was transformed into the relief road to take through traffic away from the London road and the historic high street. When names for it were discussed, ‘Beeching Cut’ was suggested. This was a particularly apposite name as it reflected both the fact that the road did in fact run through a deep cutting but it also made reference to the manner of its demise. however, it was thought not politic to use that name and the more prosaic Beeching Way was adopted.

catch, but soon there will be none.

at that period many jokes, comic sketches were based on dr Beeching. a popular song from the previous century was parodied in the following verse:

although the Bluebell railway line was closed prior to Beeching’s cuts, it was a precursor to what was soon to come.

“Oh, dr, Beeching, what have you done? There once were lots of trains to

I’ll have to go and buy a bike, ‘cause I can’t afford a car. Oh, dr. Beeching, what a naughty man you are! The railways are now having something of a revival, and some of the lines axed in the 1960s could now be well used again. and ironically for east Grinstead, after years of sweat, blood and tears a line that lay unused for over half a century has just been reconnected to our town The Bluebell railway.

so our town has strong ties to both sides of the spectrum: on one side Lord Beeching and on the other the Bluebell railway.

Sackville House By simon Kerr, Tourist Officer for east Grinstead

The sackville name isn’t exactly unknown in east Grinstead, what with the famous College, and also of course the secondary school bearing the same name. They are so named for their connection to the sackville family; Thomas sackville becoming the 1st earl of dorset in 1604. The sackvilles were very active in acquiring what were known as burgages*, the ownership of which entitled the right to vote and thus acquire more power and influence. One such burgage is sackville house, which most of us will have walked past in the high street. It’s the one with the intriguing ‘spy hole’ set in its courtyard doorway. east Grinstead was laid out as a borough in the early part of the 13th century with its wide high street, it was flanked by 48 plots (the burgages) and each one had a house on it with a piece of town land or ‘portland’ running behind it, the main purpose of which was to provide food for the occupants. sackville house’s plot at just over 40 feet, is wider than the norm (33 feet) for the town and unusually long at 630 feet!

despite its association with the sackvilles, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that it acquired its present name, although the house itself is dated back to around 1525. The first major alteration must have been the addition of the brick chimney stack in 1574,

the date of which can be seen carved into the lintel of the middle bedroom. Originally, for reasons of fire safety, it is supposed that the kitchen was detached from the house itself, of which part overlooking the garden still survives. The next detailed history of the house came after it was acquired by Geoffrey and Joan Webb in 1919 from her father, Frederick hanbury who had made a considerable fortune in the pharmaceutical industry and lived in the town at ‘Brockhurst’ on the Lewes road. The house was in a sad state of repair, but the Webbs carried out a full restoration and laid out the garden, no doubt assisted by some of the 43 gardeners employed on Mr hanbury’s home just up the road…

*Burgage is a medieval land term meaning town or ‘borough’. It meant ‘rental property’ owned by a king or lord. The property ‘burgage tenement’ usually consisted of a house on a long and narrow plot of land, with a narrow street frontage. 34 | June 2013 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

Geoffrey Webb was a well-known stained-glass artist, and he converted the top of the house into his studio. Today this is preserved and can be seen much as it was then, thanks to the efforts of the Webbs daughter ursula. It is due to her unstinting efforts defending the remaining portlands of the high street from development that we still have the unspoiled gardens today. she went much further though, and bequeathed sackville house to the Landmark Trust on her death in 1995. Founded in 1965 the Trust buys and restores buildings at risk and restores them for public

use, in this case as self-catering accommodation. The original wagon way which gives access to the rear leads to the small courtyard area you see today when the doors are open. at other times you can take a peek through the ‘spy hole’ that was created on the orders of Geoffrey Webb who wanted to allow others the opportunity to see the delightful view even when the gates were closed. On occasions the Trust hosts an open day, when the public are invited into the house and garden, these are infrequent

events of course as it is occupied by visitors for most of the year. The first thing you notice entering the large wood panelled sitting room, is the air of stillness and quiet that prevails. The busy high street outside seems quite detached, almost like it was projected on a screen for a movie, and the scent of log fires lulls you into a state of complete relaxation. exploring the house reveals a series of rooms leading off the two staircases; on one occasion when I was lucky enough to escort a small party of school children around, they thought it was even better than being on board a pirate ship! There are surprises too like that in the eastern bedroom, where the removal of some tongue and groove boarding has revealed extensive remains of a brocade pattern wall painting, painted onto the plaster with red ochre, and it is thought that originally this formed part of a much larger scheme for the whole room. Outside, the 630 foot long gardens descend in a series of terraces each one with its own themed garden, being much like a series of outdoor rooms. It contains two remarkable specimens – a Persian ironwood tree and a calico bush whose delicate pink flowers are a delight.

at the end of the garden there is a small natural grassed area with a trickle of water and a small pond, it’s hard to sit there and believe that you are right in the middle of a modern town. If you don’t get a chance to look inside, there is still much to admire from the street, the massive horsham stone roof and the delightful dormer windows with

clumps of moss sprouting forth. In the courtyard you can also look down into the inky blackness of the well and wonder just how deep it is. For the really curious you need to look beneath your feet as you stand outside on the high street pavement. here you will see two iron gratings set in the pavement up against the wall of the house. This is where logs are delivered to tumble through directly into the cellar beneath, just think of it as part of a Medieval central heating system. Over the years I have met many people who have come to stay at sackville house, and all without exception have fallen in love with it, as indeed so have I.

help us win GOLd this year This year the Britain in Bloom judges will be visiting east Grinstead on the 17th July. We would like to ask every resident and business to help do their bit so we can win our first GOLd award. In the weeks running up to the visit we want to encourage front gardens and premises to look tidy and seasonal. Please help clear up any rubbish, report graffitti and fly-tipping to the council or maybe work with neighbours to clear communal areas and get them looking as good as possible. Thank you for helping our town to look lovely for everyone to enjoy this spring/summer.
