“Mr Nash carried out a series of works projects that included roof tile and guttering replacement; application of hanging tiles to the rear of the property and groundworks/erection of a shed and patio area in the rear garden. “The works were finished to schedule, for reasonable fees and to a good standard. I was very pleased with the results. Throughout the contract, Mr. Nash and his colleagues behaved with care and consideration for both myself and my neighbours and were extremely professional in their conduct. “As a shareholder and director of a business for 10 years that was highly customer focused, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Nash for future projects. I found him to be organised, methodical and communicative about the progress of works with both the client and his staff and he managed the projects in a most professional manner, to budget and to time.” — Dr. C Scott

The Grinsteadian Father of Waitrose: Wallace Wyndham Waite LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum
The founders of Waitrose, Wallace Wyndham Waite, Arthur Rose and David Taylor opened a grocery shop in Acton, in 1904, known then as Waite, Rose and Taylor. However, when David Taylor left the business three years later, the remaining partners renamed it Waitrose Ltd, combining their two surnames to form the now, familiar name of the supermarket chain. Wallace Waite was born in Moat Road, East Grinstead on March 29th 1881. He appears on the 1881 census at five days old as “infant under one month”, as yet unnamed. His parents William and Sarah already had five children, the eldest three were born in Herefordshire. John Wallace senior by a year was born in East Grinstead as would be the next addition to the Waite family, John and Wallace's sister Bertha. By 1891 the family had moved to Shepton Mallett in Somerset. Sometime before 1895 The Waites moved yet again, this time to Wandsworth, where their youngest child was born. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY led to Family circumstances Wallace being apprenticed to a grocer on his thirteenth

birthday. By 1901, Wallace gives his occupation as a grocer’s assistant. He is a visitor staying with Katherine Cuthbert in Spring Street, Hyde Park. The fact that he is described as a visitor and not a boarder seems to imply that she was a relative or friend of the family. At the same time, his future partner, Arthur Rose is working as a warehouseman in a wholesale provisions outlet in Walthamstow. He was Living

living with his wife, Sarah, and his father-in-law, James Holderway. The two men were obviously working in similar retail areas, although how they met and decided to join forces is unknown. David Taylor is difficult to trace, over two million people with that name appear on the 1901 census. His involvement with the company was short lived, Continues over the page. THE GRINSTEADIAN FATHER OF WAITROSE: WALLACE WYNDHAM WAITE CONTINUED
however, and he does not play any part in the future development of the company, from one shop in Acton to the major supermarket chain it is today. By 1911, Wallace Waite is married to Kathleen with an eighteen month-old daughter, Barbara Kathleen. He gives his occupation as managing director of a general store. They are living in Wallingford. Strangely, Arthur Rose still describes himself as a warehouseman, although he must have been a co-director. Waite was responsible for the buying and Rose looked after the accounts, their policy was keen pricing but high standards. They gradually acquired more shops and in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War were awarded the contract to supply the army camp at Catterick. Arthur Rose joined the Royal Horse Artillery at the beginning of the war and was part of the British Expeditionary Force. He was wounded in the thigh by a bomb on March 23rd. 1918 and took no further part in the conflict. He seems also to have lost interest in Waitrose and left all the business in the hands of Wallace Waite, finally resigning in 1924. In the capable hands of Waite, the business thrived. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY The Waitrose shops were in affluent areas, Waite living
now introduced a string of shops in less wealthy places, called Wyndhams (after his middle name). He was keen to introduce and promote foreign foods, especially from the British Empire. For his work in this field he was awarded the MBE. In 1937 Waite met Michael Walker from the John Lewis Partnership. Waite decided to put Waitrose into their hands. He stayed on for three years but retired in 1940, convinced that his business was would thrive under the partnership. Indeed, under the leadership of John Lewis the Waitrose stores have continued to innovate. They were the first supermarket chain to sell organic food, and formed a link with Prince Charles and his Duchy Originals. They have also brought in Heston Blumental recipes. Their green token scheme, which supports charities in each shop’s local area, has
been successful in helping their communities. In 2007 they opened their first shop abroad in the United Arab Emirates. Their advertising over last Christmas was based on a poem about a robin, by Michael Morpurgo, who by co-incidence spent six years of his life at school, about three miles away from our East Grinstead branch of Waitrose. Wallace and his wife Kathleen moved to a house called Kinross in Gerrards Cross. Kathleen died in a nursing home in October 1949. Wallace continued to live there until his own death in 1971. He must have died content that his dream to “lift the food trade to a higher plane” had developed within the John Lewis Partnership, to heights even he had not envisaged.

June Gardening Tips
Annuals, Bulbs & Herbaceous
month. Raise the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass cools the roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer.
Remove fading and dead flowers on your annuals and herbaceous perennial plants. Removing the finished flowers will promote a longer flowering season. Perennial and biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden.
Roses
Continue to plant container grown perennials. Always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of soil improver compost or well composted manure with your existing soil.
Shrubs
Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.
Vegetables and Fruit
Continue feeding roses with a general rose fertilizer. Spray against pest and disease preferably with an organic product. Dead head faded blooms on a regular basis.
Summer flowering shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering. Remove any dead or diseased branches.
Now is the time to start your autumn and winter vegetables. Sow seeds of onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early in the month. Do not spray any fruit with insecticide if still flowering as this may harm pollinating insects leading to a poor fruit yield. Keep all fruit well watered during dry periods. New raspberry shoots can be tied in this month.
Greenhouse On hot summer days ventilate as much as possible and damp down twice a day greenhouse floors and benches to prevent the air from becoming dry. Shade plants from the midday sun and water as often as necessary.
Miscellaneous
Lawns
Keep the weeding going before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again. Keep an eye out for insect, slug and snail or disease damage throughout the garden, and take the necessary steps to control the problem.
Water regularly, and deeply. If a water shortage is expected, or you hate tending to COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY grass, you may choose to just let your lawn go dormant, and water it as seldom as once a Living

Travelling back to the 60s ‘On the Buses’
© ginoandsharonphotography.co.uk Last month Tunbridge Wells Photographer Gino Cinganelli arranged a hugely entertaining 60s/70s style photoshoot, 'On the Buses' in East Grinstead's High Street during a vintage bus running day. Here he tells us all: I like to create large scale photo shoots with lots of people involved, with local company CDH Events we've recreated The Exorcist, The Rocky Horror Show, The Dark Circus and in February 2017 we put on our biggest most challenging photo shoot to date, The Walking Dead, with a huge team of makeup artists. I am lucky enough that when I announce a shoot I have plenty of willing actors and models who volunteer their time. The result was amazing and has given us COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY a great deal of coverage and interest!
East Grinstead held a Country Bus Rallies day. With this in mind I tracked down the organiser Alan Charman and explained my plan was to fill a bus with people dressed in 1960's and 70's costume, for an 'On the Buses' sitcom-style photoshoot. He was wonderful and made all the necessary arrangements!
But how could I follow that? I always wanted to do a vintage shoot on a vintage double decker bus so I started researching bus hire and learning about old buses. As we all do these shoots on a budget of £0 and its all just for fun, I could not pay the £1000 to hire such a bus for the day. It was then I discovered that

TRAVELLING BACK TO THE 60S ‘ON THE BUSES’ CONTINUED lady who was to tell everyone about her health problems, a vicar who had to bless people while swigging from a flask of brandy, a magician and his partner on their way to an interview, doing Tommy Cooper style tricks which all went wrong and a man on his way home after spending time in prison for a crime he did not commit, the twist was he only had a pair of union Jack Y fronts under his long rain coat! All in all our characters pulled this off perfectly.

I had 3 singers from a 1940's vocal group and I asked them to learn the "On The Buses" song; they had the whole bus singing along. Our job as photographers was to capture the mood, the fun and the laughter and I think we did this well. We are hoping to come back to East Grinstead for an event on 1st October, this time we want to bring with us 50 actors and models all OAP's dressed as punkrockers, we hope to have many on walking sticks, zimmer frames and a couple in wheelchairs, with a team of around 20 makeup artist working with us! All the images from the "On The Buses" are on our website. Thank you to the cast and photographers Robert and Stephanie Sceal. And special thanks to all the bus crews, the Mayor of East Grinstead and everyone who helped make this a great event. For more information about our photography see www. ginoandsharonphotography.co.uk.
Using Facebook and the site Purple Port, within a few days we had a full cast of models. To make it more interesting several cast members were given a task and character to play including: an old

Elisabeth Eckersley has been
teaching German to us Brits for over 20 years now and she is an expert if ever there was one! With GSCE's in languages shortly to become far more challenging. For students to gain a good grasp of the language will be more important than ever. Here is a short Q&A with one of her adult students whose whole family have taken her classes: Why would you want to learn German? The main reason is I want to be able to do business with Germans after we leave the EU. Do you think that being able to “schprecken Deutsch” will get that to happen? I know it will. My whole success has been brought about by being able and willing to communicate with others.
Then of course there's 15 year old James. He knows about the upcoming change in the 9 to 1 German exams and he wants some tutorial to help him interacting effectively in speech and writing for a variety of purposes from the start.
GERMAN TUITION Adults & Children I teach REAL-LIFE, CONVERSATIONAL German in groups and one-to-one EASY - FUN For more info call:

Clever as he is, he understands that he cannot leave it all up to last minute practice before the final exams!
How about the rest of the family?
Some other good reasons: German food, wines and beers are great, as well their countryside, and the fact that German is the most widely spoken second language across Europe.
Our daugher Jenny also wants to speak German, and if I say “boyfriend” that should explain just about everything.
If you would like further information about learning German, call Liz for a friendly chat on 01342 811099.

Returning to the wild In recent months we've seen programmes such as 'The Doctor who gave up drugs', air on our screens, showing well-being therapies such as outdoor swimming given as an option. It is no wonder then that there has been a rise in popularity outdoor swimming. Aldo Frisgualt, who runs outdoor swimming pop-up meets at Weirwood Reservoir gives us an insight: "Having watched and looked after 100's of open water swimmers, I have witnessed a multitude of physical, and more surprisingly, mental manifestations. Often people come to the lake to practice for that big triathlon race. They may well have never tried it before and only swum in a pool, but one thing is for sure, they all fall in love, something happens in the wild water that turns the driven athlete into a chilled out, relaxed person. Is it the cold water? maybe the exposure? maybe the wild experience? maybe the rhythmic meditation that happens when you swim long distance? maybe all of this combined? One thing is for sure, when they leave the water, their shoulders are loser, their smiles are wider and most strikingly, they talk, you'll find strangers sitting together on the jetty and really getting to know eachother. I have no doubt that this is part of the therapy that open water swimming gives you. I've never known an ice breaker like this, a sense of achievement
that brings us together and allows our selfesteem and confidence to rise. In todays society, where everything is driven towards comfort and risk avoidance, this experience allows us that little bit of adventure that reminds us that we are human. When people start they are often incredibly anxious, and ritualistically delay their entrance to the water. The first obstacle is the cold water so when they eventually enter, they screech! their blood circulation, heart rate, and breathing all increase. They then laugh as adrenaline is released and they get moving. As they swim, the exercise hormones are of course released. This type of independent freedom and close contact with nature is hard to explain, and hard to come by. Some people swim long distances, and achieve an almost meditative state, others swim out to the middle and just float on their backs, chill, and look up at the sky. they all eventually come out a revived with the therapy of nature." For more information see popupopenwaterswims.vpweb.co.uk or phone Aldo on 07734476901.

Hot Smoked Salmon, Asparagus, New Potato Salad & Raw Fennel Serves 2
By Pete Howes, Pastry Chef at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club
Ingredients
• 350-400g hot smoked salmon • 200g new potatoes • ½ x fennel bulb • zest and juice of 1 lime • 4 asparagus spears • 1 bunch watercress • 100g mayonnaise • ¼ bunch of chives, finely chopped • handful roquette leaves • 150ml olive oil • 1 teaspoon wholegrain mustard • 3 tablespoons honey
Method
6. Place the asparagus, fennel and watercress into a bowl and add a small amount of dressing, just enough to coat the ingredients.
1. Boil the new potatoes in slightly salted boiling water for approximately 10 minutes; when cooked strain off the water and leave to cool down naturally.
7. Place some new potatoes in the middle of the plate, place the salmon on top of the potatoes, followed by the fennel mix finish with some more of the dressing.
2. When the potatoes have cooled, add the mayonnaise, lime zest and juice and also the chopped chives.
8. This is a great summer dish to enjoy with a chilled bottle of English white wine!
3. Then very carefully using a Japanese mandolin or a sharp knife, cut the fennel into thin slices and place into a bowl. 4. Take a vegetable peeler to create ribbons from the raw asparagus.

I was nervous about using a professional as I had done a lot of the decorating in my house myself but the wall paper I chose was very expensive and I did not want any mistakes. Mark was punctual, polite and efficient. He did a good job, left no mess and moved some heavy furniture back into position for me, without me having to ask him. Discovering a Bug's Life
The National Trust at Sheffield Park need your help! As part of their plans to restore and improve the section of the River Ouse that runs through the Sheffield Park estate, they are holding a ‘Bioblitz’ event on Saturday 1st July 2017. This completely free event gives families the opportunity
to try their hand at worm charming, ex-stream dipping, bird spotting and bug hunting, with National Trust Rangers on hand to help you identify the different species you find. The results of the Bioblitz will help Sheffield Park to monitor the changes to the local ecosystem as the river restoration project develops. Recent funding from Viridor and from raffle ticket sales onsite have enabled the National Trust to start a project to improve the channel shape and connection to the floodplain, benefiting water quality, wildlife habitats
and alleviating flooding downstream. Plans also include building a bridge over the river, linking the Sheffield Park parkland with the Ouse Valley Way. Details of the plans will be available for visitors to see during the day. There is no charge to take part in the Bioblitz or any of the activities on the parkland, so take this opportunity to enjoy a fun family day out while helping us increase our knowledge of the wildlife living in and around the river. For further information see www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ sheffieldpark.
Google: Now where did I see that? Searching online is like playing charades only instead of miming, your words are waving towards what you would like with a hopeful grace. While some searches are straightforward, others may require a more interesting route to your goal. Here is how to get there. If you are searching but not finding then ask yourself this: what unusual words or phrases are used by people who talk about it? These are good starting points for your search. For physical objects, try adjusting your search using the Images section of Google; you can literally see when you are getting closer. Google’s genie can sort the massive internet haystack better with some direction from you. Try removing the chaff by using “-“ to eliminate pages with words you do not want and “+” to insist on having a given word. For example, David -cameron will only give youDIRECTORY pages that do not mention Mr COMMUNITY BUSINESS Cameron. Want pages about David Davies? Search using +”david davies” to insist on having the phrase
Living
living
“David Davies” in each result. The phrase inside the quotations is used to whittle results rapidly to what you want. Can’t remember the whole phrase? Simply put in what you can remember, using a * for the part you cannot. For example, I can't * away produces results that have phrases that start I can’t and end with away such as I can’t stay away. Want results for particular years? For information relating to 2008, simply add ..2008 to your search. For example, golf cup +scotland ..2008 will tend to give you pages on scottish golf cups for 2008. Want a range of years, say 2008 to 2010? No problem, just change it to 2008.. 2010 only remember to watch out for the space after the two dots. Finally, how about searching a particular website? Nothing could be simpler. To search the entire BBC for frogs use site:bbc.co.uk frogs. You can replace frogs with any search you prefer. RL Computer Solutions: See ad on page 4

MCINDOE: IMMORTALISED IN FILM © East Grinstead Museum, reproduced with their kind permission
along. The difference? He treated them like humans and they reciprocated his clear intention. All these years since he gave those RAF men their lives back physically, mentally and spiritually, the extraordinary man will be being honoured on the big screen, with Richard E Grant lined up to play him.
One of East Grinstead most famous 'sons', Sir Archibald McIndoe will soon be deservedly having his life immortalised in a film named The Guinea Pig Club. The film is described as “the true story of maverick surgeon Archie McIndoe, who, at the height of World War II, defied the British establishment with his radical methods aimed at healing severely burned bodies — and more importantly the tortured souls — of Britain's heroic Royal Air Force pilots. “In so doing, he risked his career, reputation and marriage.” As most of us know, McIndoe was best known for saving COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY the lives of the 649 Second World War “guinea pigs”
as they were named, with his pioneering, trailblazing plastic surgery methods. His story is already well documented for progeny both locally and elsewhere and his legacy continues to ascend well into the 21st century with a stage play a couple of years ago, a memorial statue in front of Sackville College and now this high profile film. The 'rebel' McIndoe instigated drinking and sing-songs on the wards of the Queen Vic - jolly men would of course heal faster. They were also to wear their military uniform to restore pride, and pretty nurses were employed to encourage them! East Grinstead townspeople were famously told to 'never stare', helping the reintegration process

His indelible contribution to medical history, to the unique overcoming of the new and difficult challenges he faced will be represented by this project, due to begin filming in February. There have been various attempts over the years to make films of his life which have never left the launching pad. This time however there is a script, director and actors lined up, it's assured. Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), will play the part of Richard Hillary, a dashing pilot who was shot down and rescued from the North Sea having received extensive burns. He wrote a book of his experiences and recovery after which he was returned to duty but was tragically killed in '43. Years later recognition of his book and his experiences continues to grow making him arguably the most famous of the guinea pigs. Enquiries: 01342 300152 Please mention us when responding to adverts
