Pooh Walks Two walks which take you to some of the sites of Pooh’s adventures

The shorter walk takes you to the Enchanted Place & Sandy Pit and is suitable for younger children. The longer walk descends to the North Pole and Eeyore’s Sad and Gloomy place.

With Grateful Thanks to the Ashdown Forest Centre and Conservators for allowing us to reproduce their walk leaflet (edited version below). There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre, Wych Cross.

Short Pooh Walk – 0.6 mile/1 km Long Pooh Walk – 2 miles/3.25 km Ashdown Forest is the real place where Christopher Robin, a boy, Winnie-the-Pooh, the most famous bear in the world, and their friends grew up together.

These Pooh walks explore some of the places of their best-known exploits.

From Gills Lap car park walk north, away from the road junction, on the wide ride. Pass a bench and after about 250m you reach a clump of tall pine trees (Gills Lap) on your right - The Enchanted Place. The concrete, surveyor’s triangulation point is 669 feet/204m above sea level.

To continue, turn left and descend on a narrower path to reach the Heffalump Trap, a small hollow in which a Lone Pine grows.

Some say that the hollow was Pooh’s Cunning Trap to capture that rare beast, the Heffalump. Some will say that it was somewhere else.

Readers of the Pooh stories may remember that the Heffalump Trap was close to the Six Pine Trees, not a solitary pine.

Could it be that this Lone Pine is all that remains of the Six? In the stories Piglet digs the pit whilst Pooh went to get honey to bait the trap. Could Piglet, a very small animal, dig a pit big enough to fit a Heffalump? Gills Lap, Galleons Lap in the Pooh stories, is the Enchanted Place on the very top of the Forest where they could sit down without worrying about prickly vegetation. From here their ‘expotition’ to discover the North Pole set off, but we make a diversion before following the footsteps of the explorers.

Backtrack about 10 metres, turn left and follow the ride for 250m to the Milne and Shepard Memorial in front of you.

The Memorial commemorates AA Milne, author of the Pooh stories, and EH Shepard, the illustrator. As Christopher Robin was to write in later life, this was where his father sat and where Pooh sat too; now we can see what they saw.

On leaving the Memorial turn right and in 25m is Roo’s Sandy Pit, a disused quarry, on the left (not so sandy now).

Although Baby Roo played happily in his Sandy Pit, it was the supposed site of Pooh’s dark moment, the kidnapping of Roo to force Kanga and Roo, the newcomers to the Forest, to leave it forever. As in all the best stories it ended happily.

In later life Christopher Robin was to write: “It is a real forest with giant beech trees, all dark and mysterious. You would need to be a brave explorer to venture into the Five Hundred Acre at night, and I never did”.

For the longer walk, turn left onto a path, pass through Quarry car park to the road. Cross with care onto a path opposite and in 30m turn left onto the ride.

Gently descend and bear right through light woodland before descending steeply on more open heath to reach the valley bottom, a bridge and the site of the North Pole.

The woodland on the far side of the valley appears as Five Hundred Acre Wood on the Ordnance Survey map but Pooh knew better: to him it was the Hundred Acre Wood where Owl lived. Pooh used the same route down into the valley that was, and is, used while

In Pooh’s hands (or paws) it became an ‘expotition’ and he spread the word. Led by Christopher Robin a long line started out. Pooh discovered the North Pole and they stuck the pole in the ground with a notice which read:

Follow the ride as it skirts around the rim of the valley.

Eeyore’s Gloomy Place (“rather boggy and sad”) is somewhere in the valley below on the right - even the grown-up Christopher Robin was not sure where it was.

The Gloomy Place was where Eeyore lost his house.

Continue to the road and junction opposite Gills Lap car park. Cross with care.

MERIDIAN FM PRESENTER: Jack powley “I’ve been a member of Meridian FM for about a year now and it has flown by because I absolutely love what I do, being involved with community radio. My show’s on Saturday afternoons, 12-3pm; It’s evolved over the past year into the current format which starts with the film hour where I give an unbiased overview with exclusive interviews, clips and trailers followed by a firsthand review of new films. Then from 2-3pm is the sports hour where I mention lots of local sports news and bring you reports and interviews from the East Grinstead Cycling and Sports clubs. 1. Clean behind radiators: hang a large damp cloth behind it and use a blow drier (on it’s highest, coolest setting) to blow dust onto the cloth.

2. Brighten up glass dishware by adding a teaspoon of bleach to your soapy water as you’re washing. Be sure to rinse well after.

3. Rid your hands of food odours by wetting and rubbing with 2 teaspoons of bicarb of soda instead of soap.

4. Make a ‘slug-pub’ trap for slugs or snails in the garden. These creatures love beer, bury a container (such as empty margarine tub) where you’ve seen them. Fill bottom with leftover beer and leave it overnight.

Winner of the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year

Fundraising for the Children of today & tomorrow Imberhorne Sports Hall Update

We sincerely hope all Imberhorne students enjoyed ‘Imberthon’ and that it was successful. For any sponsors out there, the school is very grateful for your support.

As this publication goes to print £120,000 has been raised so far; a further £80,000 must be raised over the next 12 months to ensure Imberhorne meets the commitment made at the start of the sports hall campaign in 2010.

Laura van der Heijden, resident of Forest Row, last month won the highly coveted BBC’s Young Musician Award out of 453 applicants!

Her performance of the rarely-played Walton Cello Concerto mesmerised the judges.

Laura, a student of Sackville School, East Grinstead, started playing recorder when she was four, followed by the piano, and when she was six began learning the cello. Since late 2008 she has been taught the cello by Leonid Gorokhov.

Another thought that has emerged is that her victory will be a timely boost to the campaign to keep music alive in state schools.

We asked her some questions: Did you ever imagine that one day you would win such a prestigious competition?

No, definitely not What was the toughest part?

To stay focused for almost a year When did it dawn on you that you wanted to be a musician?

It was a gradual process, and recently (also in connection with the BBC Young Musician Competition) I have become a lot more serious about choosing music as a career.

Would you say you were mostly self-driven when you started or did you have to have a lot of encouragement?

I had a lot of encouragement

from many different influences, and have now become more self-driven.

How can you fit everything in around your schooling?

My schools have been very helpful, flexible and understanding when it came to music.

Where do you draw your inspiration from to play as you do? from my teacher Leonid Gorokhov and from cellists Zara Nelsova, Daniil Shafran and Alexander Rudin as well as violinist Jascha Heifetz Since then how has life changed?

In July the whole PE department will be running a relay in pairs from Hastings Pier to Bognor Pier and they are looking for a local company to sponsor the event. It’s a great way to associate a business with a healthy, challenging and adventurous cause.

Baked macaroni cheese with tomatoes This recipe turns what is often a high-fat family favourite into a healthier option for everyone.

If you’re feeding children, remember that they don’t need to eat as much as an adult and need kid-sized portions. If you’re cooking for fewer people you can simply reduce the quantities, or why not make the full amount and freeze extra portions for another day?

What to do:

Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes

Ingredients: 300g macaroni 50g low-fat spread 1 small onion finely chopped 50g plain flour 600ml semi-skimmed milk 100g reduced fat mature Cheddar cheese grated 1 tsp English mustard 1 pinch ground black pepper 2 tomatoes sliced

1. Preheat the oven to 190°, fan 170°C, gas mark 5.

2. Cook the macaroni in a large saucepan of boiling water for 8-10 minutes, or according to the instructions on the packet, until tender.

3. Meanwhile, melt the low-fat spread in a large saucepan and cook the onion for 3-4 minutes until softened, but not brown. Remove from the heat and stir in the flour. Return to the heat and cook gently for about 1 minute, stirring, until the mixture has a texture like sand.

4. Remove from the heat and add the milk a little at a time, stirring well to mix together. Then return to the heat, stirring all the time, until the sauce is thick and smooth. At this point, remove from the heat and add about two-thirds of the cheese and the mustard. Season with pepper.

5. Drain the cooked pasta well and return it to the saucepan. Stir in the hot cheese sauce. Tip the mixture into a baking dish which can hold about 1.2 litres, or use individual serving dishes. Top with the sliced tomatoes and sprinkle the left-over cheese on top. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until piping hot, then serve.

Tips: 1. Use tubes of pasta instead of macaroni. Take care not to overcook it - it needs to keep a little ‘bite’.

2. Instead of tomatoes you could use a layer of sliced leeks, courgettes and peppers, lightly cooked in boiling water to soften them.

Lawns

Remove fading and dead flowers on your annuals and herbaceous perennial plants.

Removing the finished flowers will promote a longer flowering season. Perennial and biennial plants can be started from seed sown directly into the garden. Continue to plant container grown perennials. Always take time to properly prepare the soil by mixing generous quantities of soil improver compost or well composted manure with your existing soil. Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.

Greenhouse

On hot summer days ventilate as much as possible and damp down twice a day greenhouse floors and benches to prevent the air from becoming dry.

Shade plants from the midday sun and water as often as necessary.

Shrubs

Summer flowering shrubs should be pruned for shape after they have finished flowering.

Remove any dead or diseased branches.

Grasses go dormant in times of drought, but will quickly return to life with the autumn rains so a brown lawn is not necessarily a dead lawn !! If a lush green lawn is important to you, and you don’t mind mowing, water it regularly, and deeply. If a water shortage is expected, or you hate tending to grass, you may choose to just let your lawn go dormant, and water it as seldom as once a month. Raise the cutting height of the mower. Taller grass cools the roots and helps to keep the moisture in the soil longer.

Vegetables and Fruit

Now is the time to start your autumn and winter vegetables. Sow seeds of onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early in the month. Do not spray any fruit with insecticide if still flowering as this may harm pollinating insects leading to a poor fruit yield. Keep all fruit well watered during dry periods. New raspberry shoots can be tied in this month.

Miscellaneous

Keep the weeding going before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again..

Keep an eye out for insect, slug and snail or disease damage throughout the garden, and take the necessary steps to control the problem.

East Grinstead standing by

to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay Tuesday the 17th of July is the day to put in your diary, because that’s when the Olympic Torch will coming through East Grinstead on its way around the UK. After having travelled here from Copthorne, the convoy arrives in Felbridge on the A264 at Lyndhurst Farm Close. At around 10.00 the first runners will start to carry the torch on foot from here, before turning on to the A22 and following it into town as it becomes the London Road. At this stage there will not be any road closures as such, but a rolling roadblock will be in action to keep traffic away from the convoy and the torch bearers.

About 10.15 the torch reaches the shopping area of the town, and here the roads will be closed to traffic and will remain closed until 12.00 to allow the crowds to enjoy the spectacle and entertainment that will be provided.

The Torch Relay carries on up London Road and turns into East Grinstead’s historic High Street, where the crowds are expected to be the greatest. We are

promised a very special attraction here as a focus for the day and the route will be lined with bunting and banners, some made by local schools as on Olympic tribute. The torch then turns into College Lane past Sackville College and down Blackwell Hollow onto the Holtye Road and past the world-famous Queen Victoria Hospital. Here the Torch will cross the Greenwich Meridian Line, one of the few occasions that this will happen in the UK. The last runner will halt at Great Field Place and then the convoy proceeds by vehicle to Tunbridge Wells.

It will surely be a great spectacle, and there are many places along the route that you can see the Relay pass in comfort and in safety. Please remember that although the route will be marshalled, it is up to you to keep yourselves and your family safe. Leave space around you and normal road safety rules apply.

Ten days later the torch will arrive at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games in the Olympic Park in London, having travelled all over the UK. Let’s make sure that East Grinstead gives it one of the best and most memorable of welcomes.

FROM ARSENAL FC TO EAST GRINSTEAD HC This is the next in a series of articles about our Premier League leading Hockey Club’s Players. This month we profile Darren Cheesman who was voted ‘Premier League Player of the Year’ during his time at EG.

Tell us a bit about your background and how you came to take up Hockey?

I grew up in Islington, home of Arsenal FC, so it should be no surprise that I spent most of my childhood with a football no further than 1 metre away from me, and the thought of playing for Arsenal cemented in my dreams. It just so happened though that one afternoon, just before I turned 11, Arsenal came into my primary school to take over our PE class. However, instead of bringing footballs with them, they were carrying hockey sticks and balls; I instantly loved the game.

I then met the man who was to be my mentor for the next 15 years, Freddie Hudson, Head of Sports Development at Arsenal FC. He used to play Southgate Hockey Club 1st XI at the time they were English and European Champions. He has an amazing amount of skill, but an even greater capacity to bring the best of the young people.

From there, Freddie coached me up to the point of making my English Premier League debut for Old Loughtonians 1st XI aged only 15.

Why did you choose East Grinstead Hockey Club, what makes it special?

After playing a season in Holland for Oranje Zwart everyone expected me to go to Reading or Loughborough, but I had been speaking a lot with Ashley Jackson about EG. I asked to speak with some people from the club and I instantly bought in to their dream for the future. The club had only just returned to the Premier League, finished mid table, and wanted to win the league within 5 years. The atmosphere seemed very special, and they were all amazingly welcoming, so that Summer I joined East Grinstead.

Who or where do you draw inspiration from?

There are a few places I draw inspiration from. Firstly, as a Muslim, my main inspiration comes from God. Before every game or training session I say a little prayer while on the pitch asking Him to protect me from harm, to make me the best I can be, use me to make the game of my team mates as easy as possible, and also to keep me adhering to the best of etiquettes and manners. I strongly believe that out talent is God-given so I do my best to develop it as best I can.

Other inspiration come from my team-mates. We have people like Ashley and Barry in the team that are ridiculously skilful and able players, but I am also inspired by others. Andy Piper who came to us from local club Sevenoaks; he took a big gamble coming here but has become a regular in the first team, starting games at the end of the season. Wes Jackson who is very skilful, and works unbelievably hard for the team. Adam Harper who I have known since I was 12; he is the only defender I have ever worried about facing (not that I ever told him that!). Rick Gay who would literally put his body on the line for the team.

We have so many different components to this squad, each bringing something slightly unique, and that inspires me to bring my own flavour!

Any message to young potential professional sports players in this area?

To all the young sports people out there, my advice to you is that everyone has the ability to do amazing things. It all comes down to whether you want it enough, and whether you are prepared to do everything it takes to achieve it. The ‘want’ comes from your love for the sport, and if that is there, go and speak to someone from your local sports club who can tell you what you need to do to be the best you can be.

A prison in Pohang, South Korea is testing the world’s first robot prison guard.

Created in Asia, if the robot proves to be effective it might soon replace human guards to keep prisons safe!

The $879,000 robot will detect every detail of action happening inside cells through a window by using the 3D-depth camera. When there is unusual behavior, it’s programmed to analyse and reports any problem to the control system, so officers can arrives at the scene in time.

Guards are able to control the robot with an iPad, and communicate with prisoners by using the robot’s two-way cameras and microphones.

Local History Notes Dame Margery Corbett Ashby

On the 99th anniversary of the militant suffragette, Emily Davidson, being fatally injured by the king’s horse at the Epsom Derby, it seems fitting that tribute is paid to our local suffragist, Dame Margery Corbett Ashby.

Margery Irene Corbett was born on May 15th 1882 in Danehill. Her parents, Charles and Marie Corbett, were both strong Liberals and supporters of women’s rights. They often travelled to East Grinstead where they made speeches on the subject on the subject. East Grinstead was then a staunchly Conservative town and their audiences were frequently hostile. Margery was to say later in her life that “my parents, as Liberals, were at that period, as hated and distrusted by the gentry as Communists are today.”

Coming from this background it is unsuprising that Margery and her younger sister, Cicely, also became involved. Together with friends they formed the Young Suffragists. Suffragists were a less aggressive, but equally determined to enfranchise women, as the more militant Suffragettes, who made more headlines. Educated at home, Margery was accepted for Newnham College, Cambridge, where she joined the

National Union of Women Suffrage Societies. After leaving university she took a place at a teacher training College but never taught, as her time was increasingly taken up by the suffrage movement.

She became secretary of many groups and societies with this aim.

She married Brian Ashby in 1910. He was a barrister and was a great supporter of her work.

The next year she and Cicely formed the East Grinstead branch of the Suffrage Society. A survey in the same year showed that less than 20% of the women in the town supported votes for women! At a public meeting in the Queens Hall in July 1922, the Countess de la Warr was elected President of the society and Margery and her sister, now Cicely Corbett Fisher, were on the committee. The common desire of these siblings to retain their own identity through the continued use of their maiden names, (albeit, in conjunction with their husband’s surnames) is unusual at this period.

At the General Election of 1906, Charles Corbett won an unexpected victory over the Conservative candidate. It was what we now would think of as a one-issue campaign - though Corbett would no

doubt have thought his Liberal views were now being espoused by the voters of East Grinstead, all male, of course. The truth was that there was universal disquiet with the Education Act of 1902 which made the teaching of the Anglican religion mandatory in all schools, not just those run by the Church of England. This was very unpopular in East Grinstead, which had a strong non-conformist tradition. Corbett promised it would be repealed if the Liberals formed the government. It is the only occasion when East Grinstead has not returned a Conservative Member to Westminster. Once there, Charles Corbett spoke strongly for women’s rights. In 1913 he, together with the Reverend G. Riddell and the Reverend R.Strong, formed the East Grinstead branch of the Men’s League for Women’s Rights. This was disbanded at the start of the war.

In 1914 Margery’s only child, a son, Michael George Ashby, was born. Co-inciding with the outbreak of World War I, Margery’s energies were temporarily concentrated on her child and the war effort. She worked in hospitals as a volunteer, for the four years of it’s duration. The end of the war saw the Qualification of Women Act, which gave women over thirty the right to vote. This was a step in the right direction and led to the election in 1919, of the first woman to the Houses of Parliament, Lady Astor. 1928 saw the suffrage extended to all women over twenty-one.

Full political equality with men was however, the next goal. Margery, herself, stood at every election from then until 1935 and again at by-elections in 1937 and 1934. She was unsuccessful in all of them but her real aim was

to encourage other women to come forward as candidates rather than to become an MP herself.

Her interests had always been wider than just women’s emancipation. A friend wrote of her saying, “ ...she also fought for civil liberties, free trade, international goodwill and democracy.”

She went as a delegate to The Versailles Peace Conference of the International Alliance of Women. She was elected President of the International Women’s Suffrage Alliance in 1923 and stayed in that position until she retired in 1946. In 1932 she travelled to Geneva as the British delegate for Disarmament. She was a signatory on a letter asserting that war could be averted if the League of Nations took more positive action. War was inevitable at this point, however, and she quietly worked throughout the duration in many voluntary roles. After the war she became politically active again and was awarded the DBE by the Queen for her services to women in 1967. Dame Margery went on her last demonstration, in London in 1980, at the age of 98. She died the following year, just a month after her 99th birthday.

During her long and active life she used her gift of being a rousing and passionate speaker to draw others to her many causes. Her strong religious belief and her family heritage made her one of the best-known women of her generation in this area. From sharing a platform with the Pankhursts at the turn of the twentieth century she went on to work for many different causes.

As she said in one of her inspirational speeches: “Let us awake and determine women shall enter the machine to direct it for the defence of democracy.”
