Guttering Building Refurbishment Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Dear Residents, Welcome to the March Edition of the East Grinstead Living. This month hails in Spring which is a time to start sprucing up the house and straightening the garden. On that subject, the garden theme can be seen throughout this issue. We are very lucky to have a fabulous article by Simon Kerr about Elsie Wagg who lived in East Grinstead & who was responsible for initiating the now omnipresent National Garden Scheme. Have you ever wanted to grow your own? If you do but don’t know where to start, turn to our Growing Carrots article. We have also re-introduced our popular monthly Gardening Tips by Micheal Dongray of Imberhorne Lane Nursery. Stuck for what to do with the kids in the upcoming Easter Holidays? See our feature about Easter activities in the area. Plus much more. Thank you for supporting our local businesses. We welcome all your feedback, events, community news, etc. All the best for a good start to Springtime. Tally & Chris

get on d n a P U T I GLAM ! S M R O F T A YOUR PL By Peter Turnbull

We are staging a reunion for anyone who attended Sackville School, East Grinstead between 1970 and 1980 on Saturday 21st April 2012.

There is also and event page on Facebook – log-in and type ‘Sackville 70’s Reunion’ in the search bar.

HOW DID THE REUNION GET STARTED?

In the afternoon they’ll be socialising/catch up, meet old staff members, tour of the school, etc.

Ex-Sackville Pupil Duncan Wheatley, started a Facebook page to investigate the possibility of a reunion for his school year (5th form class of 1978). A large number of ex-pupils from many different years registered their response. At the same time (and a complete coincidence) Ex-Pupil Mark Pope (from the same school year as Duncan) had started his own ‘Sackville class of ‘78’ Facebook page, again with a very popular response. Duncan and Mark then joined forces with old school chums Steven Haynes and Peter Turnbull and the reunion was born. Due to the wide range of school years keen to participate, it was decided that the reunion should be for anyone who attended Sackville in the 1970’s. Recently retired Sackville teacher Penney Bell is helping us to track down ex staff members...

WHO’S INVITED? Any ex-staff member or pupil who was at the school for any part of the 1970’s is eligible to attend. This is a large event! We already have hundreds of confirmed RSVP’s, including those from as far afield as North America, Japan and Australia and the website has full details covering travel and local accommodation. If you know anyone who wants to attend, please point them in the direction of the website where they can R.S.V.P. For those not on the net call: 07887 645994.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

‘School Dinner’ refreshments served in the school canteen throughout the day, paid for at the till. Spam Fritters may be available – for those of a robust metabolism! There will be a photo studio on site where guests can pose to have their pictures taken. We plan to exhibit of old school photos on the day, including a plasma screen slideshow, so any old photos would be gratefully received at info@sackvillereunion. org.uk. In the evening they’ll be an authentic 70’s School Disco. Legendary Sackville DJs of yesteryear: Robbie Dee, Simon Willis and Simon Lane have been invited to spin vinyl. Although this is not a fundraising event, all profits will be donated to the school.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED We have a growing list of people offering to assist front of house at the event, but we would welcome more. Anyone who could spare an hour or two on the day please get in touch by email: info@sackvillereunion.org.uk or call 07887 645994.

Gardening Tips for March

Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Bulbs

Lawns

Plant summer flowering bulbs. The soil should be well prepared. If you have wet soil place a layer of grit in the bottom of the planting hole.

Fruit If your rhubarb is pushing through, cover it with an upturned bucket to exclude light. This will encourage the plant to produce tender pink shoots. For an early crop of strawberries bring potted plants into the greenhouse. Water well and feed. Mulch fruit with your own compost or well rotted farm manure but ensure it does not touch the stems of each plant as this can cause them to rot.

Greenhouse You can start begonia tubers and canna roots. Begonia is best started by laying the tubers in a tray of moist compost. Once the shoots show, pot them individually.

New lawns can be made using turf but it is best to wait until late in the month or even into April before sowing grass seed. Towards the end of the month feed the lawn with high nitrogen fertilizer. Continue aerating your lawn and rake to get out debris, dead grass and moss. If moss is a problem use Sulphate of Iron.

If the weather is suitable sow beetroot, broad beans, carrots, leeks, lettuce and other salad leaves. Also onions, parsnips, peas, radish, spinach, summer cabbage and cauliflowers. Ensure the ground is friable. Follow instructions on the packet for sowing depths. Plant onion sets, shallots and garlic.

Shrubs Prune summer flowering shrubs such as Buddleja, Lavatera, Hardy Fuchsia and Perovskia. Remove plain green stems from variegated shrubs otherwise they will eventually revert to all green.

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Imberhorne Lane East Grinstead RH19 1TZ Phone: 01342 321 175

Raise the mowing height for the first cut of the season.

Vegetables

Sow seeds for summer bedding in your greenhouse or on a warm, bright windowsill in the house or conservatory.

GIFT VOUCHER

Check your mower is in good working order.

At the end of the month plant early chitted potatoes and put maincrop potatoes in trays or boxes to chit. Regularly hoe vegetable beds so weeds are not taking available moisture or nutrients.

Rose buttermilk pudding with raspberries Serves 8

A fresh, light recipe to welcome in Springtime.

Method When roses are at their headiest and their scent is strong you can use fresh petals instead of rosewater, just leave the petals to infuse in the cream. Likewise, you could place a few petals in the bottom of each mould for decoration when turned out. If you are are not confident about unmoulding then set the pudding in pretty glasses. 1. Place gelatine in shallow bowl and cover in cold water Recipe by Chef

Dean Samsudin

at the Brambletye Hotel

Ingredients 3 leaves of gelatine 400ml (4floz) double cream 250gm (9oz) caster sugar 4 thinly pared strips lemon rind 600ml (1pt) buttermilk 2 tsp rosewater raspberries & rose petals(optional) to serve

10%

2. Gently heat half the double cream along with the sugar and lemon rind in a saucepan over a ‘low heat’. When it’s just about to boil, remove, cover pan with the lid and leave to infuse for 15 minutes. 3. Whisk the gelatine into the infused cream and strain the mixture through a sieve into a bowl. Add the buttermilk and rosewater. 4. Gently whip the remaining double cream and fold this through the buttermilk mixture. Pour into 8 dariole moulds or nice glasses and leave to set. 5. Garnish with raspberries and, if available, rose petals, with shortbread biscuits on the side.

Help at hand for your

Weddings & Special Occasions We interview Mother & Son team Sue & Simon Stewart who recently opened their new shop, Weddings & Special Occasions in East Grinstead:

Why did you decide to go into business together? Simon already had an established photographic business in East Grinstead working from a studio on Coombe Hill Road. After taking early retirement Sue decided to realise a longtime ambition of opening a specialist clothing and accessories shop. The unique layout of 2 Railway Approach allowed us to combine the two businesses, allowing us to offer a bespoke service to our customers.

What was your original vision for starting the business? Having lived in East Grinstead for over 20 years we wanted to bring something new and different to the town. Our aim was to create a shop which offers a complete service for a couples Wedding Day and for that special Occasion, prom, etc. without having to travel to different locations for everything they need.

What services do you bring to the local area that people might not be able to get elsewhere? We offer a personal service to all our customers. Whether you are looking for an outfit and accessories for that special occasion or Wedding and Family portrait photography, we take the time to find out what your exact requirements are.

What has been the highlight of your new venture so far? The highlight of our business venture has been the positive feedback from local customers. They are delighted to see something different in East Grinstead and the customer service we offer has been very much appreciated. We have had many comments on how the window display enhances the look of the town due to our location. Give them a visit and see if they can add that little bit of sparkle to your Wedding or Special Occasion? See their ad for more details.

Elsie Wagg By Simon Kerr

I’m sure there can’t be too many residents of East Grinstead, past or present, whose portraits are valued between $1.5 and $2.5 million, but the smooth porcelain skin and rich tactile fabrics depicted here belong to one Elsie Wagg, spinster of this parish. Painted in around 1893 by the renowned American portraitist John Singer Sargent, it was last seen in 2008 being one of the auction lots at Christie’s of New York. Previous owners showed it at the Royal Academy in 1926, and more recently in Tokyo at the Sargent Exhibition in 1989. Now its location is unknown, and sadly it would seem unlikely that Elsie’s portrait will return to East Grinstead anytime soon. That’s a shame, because besides being a fine example of Sargent’s work, the picture itself is rich in anecdotes. When the painter met Elsie and her family some years after the portrait was commissioned, her brother Alfred recalled that when Sargent saw the portrait again. “He didn’t like the frame or the background and with great kindness, therefore, he presented us with a new frame and also painted in a new background.” So who was this Elsie Wagg whose portrait was painted by the same artist who also depicted the rich and famous of his day, such as Actress Ellen Terry and billionaire John Rockefeller? Together with her brother Alfred, Elsie lived at a house known as the Hermitage in East Grinstead, today sadly the house no longer exists, but local residents can guess its location if they know Hermitage Lane. Elsie was part of London society mixing with the famous of the day such as Sir Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert & Sullivan fame) who wrote to her in 1899. ‘Dear Elsie, Yes I am coming on

Sunday, and this is an official confirmation of the fact given under my hand and seal. Yours affectionately, Arthur Sullivan’. The Waggs were a wealthy family and Alfred was an important figure in the international banking world, with the family company being based in London. He played a major part in averting some of the worst excesses resulting from the great stock market crash of 1929, being honoured by the Icelandic government with the award of the Knight of the Falcon. Elsie was obviously not content merely to be part of the leisured classes, frittering her time away arranging dinner parties. She became deeply involved in fund raising for various good causes, one such being the Queen’s Nursing Institute. In 1926 at a meeting of

the Institute, Elsie Wagg came up with the novel concept of opening private gardens and charging admission. So began the National Garden Scheme in June the very next year with several hundred gardens opening, among those were the royal estate of Sandringham and William Robinson’s gardens at Gravetye, as well as the Wagg’s family home, the Hermitage. The result was ‘a splendid sum of £8,191 raised’ and an enthusiastic King George V suggesting that this should become an annual event. Country Life, that magazine beloved by the hunting and shooting fraternity, joined in. ‘Considering the enormous pleasure that the visits will give to thousands of persons and the very inconsiderable nuisance that is involved for the owners, it is to be hoped that many will continue the opportunities’. Many of Elsie’s contemporaries were delighted by the public’s reaction to their private gardens being opened, with novelist and passionate gardener Vita Sackville West writing in the New Statesman. “These mild gentlemen and women who invade one’s garden after putting their silver token into the bowl ... are some of the people I most gladly welcome and salute. Between them and myself a particular form of courtesy survives, a gardener’s courtesy, in a world where courtesy is giving place to rougher things”. From the original entry fee of a shilling (5p today) the prices may have risen to between £2.50 to £5 a head, but are still remarkable value. In the following years leading up to the outbreak of World War Two a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of the nation’s landed gentry joined the scheme led by names such as Princess Mary and her husband the Earl of Harwood

and the Duke and Duchess of Kent. As the storm clouds of war gathered in August of 1939 Winston Churchill opened his home at Chartwell raising the sum of £56. The outbreak of hostilities in 1939 saw the suspension of the scheme, as many gardens’ flowerbeds and lawns were dug up and turned over to the production of valuable foodstuffs. Post-war the gardens were re-opened to the public, and since the introduction of the National Health Service meant that the Queens Nursing Institute was now state funded, the National Garden Scheme pledged their funds for retired nurses and other worthy medical causes, a tradition that continues to this day. Today the scheme includes gardens great and small, and from a modest start in its first year, the charity has now raised nearly £42million, £25 million alone in the last 10 years.. Elsie continued her close involvement with the organisation until her death in 1949. Her brother Alfred lived on into the late 1960’s and was a great benefactor to East Grinstead, giving part of the land on which the Queen Victoria Hospital now stands, and at the end of the war also setting up a charitable trust to purchase the East Court Estate and establishing it as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the conflict. Elsie’s memorial must surely be the bright yellow posters that each year announces the opening of the properties taking part in the National Garden Scheme. A fitting tribute indeed, but how appropriate it might be to see her portrait on the wall of the mansion at East Court, so that townsfolk were reminded of both her grace and achievements.

Growing Carrots If, like me, you regrettably paid scant attention to grandparents/ parents who tried to teach you gardening then you’ll welcome this springtime feature. Growing your own has many benefits: brings down supermarket bills, is a trusted food source, gets you & the family reconnected with nature - away from the screens... We took vegetable favourite, carrots, and asked Micheal Dongray of Imberhorne Lane Nursery to give us a step-by-step helpful guide:

Carrots prefer a light soil grown in full sun but will tolerate some shade. Growing carrots in a heavy soil or one that is stony will cause the roots to become deformed. A soil PH of 6 to 6.8 is desirable for best results A deeply dug, light sandy soil is best for growing the longer varieties. If your soil is heavy or stony simply grow the more stumpy varieties of carrot. 1. Start preparing the bed two weeks before sowing the carrot seed. Break down the surface to a fine soil by using a garden fork to turn & then breaking clods using a rake and work in a general fertiliser. Note: do not plant carrots into soil that has had compost recently dug into it as this can damage roots; wait at least 2 weeks. 2. Carrots can be sown from mid February to July so harvesting can begin in early June right through until October. Below is a list of the average sowing and harvesting dates that will act as a rough guide on how to grow carrots at the correct times. 3. Sow carrot seed thinly into prepared beds, in rows 15cm (6”) apart. Thin out the seedlings when they are large enough to handle, about 7-10cm (3-4”) apart. 4. Hoe as necessary to keep down weeds. Water on a regular basis, enough to keep the ground damp. Water with a liquid feed every two weeks. 5. Start pulling your carrots from June onwards. Use a garden fork to loosen the soil around them. 6. If you intend to store some of your crop of carrots then October is the month for this. Lift the maincrop varieties, clean off any soil - use only undamaged carrot roots - cut the foliage back to about 12mm (1/2”) above the roots crown. Using a strong box place the roots on layers of sand - making sure the carrots do not touch each other. Store in a dry place and inspect regularly to remove any that may have started to rot. They should keep until March.

Sowing Times Mid February: cover with a cloche (small translucent cover for protecting outdoor plants) Grow an early variety which you can harvest in early June.

March: cover with a cloche. Grow an early variety which you can harvest in June/July.

April: No cloche required. If you grow an early variety harvest July/August. A maincrop variety will be ready in August.

May: Grow a maincrop variety and harvest in August. June: Grow a maincrop variety and harvest in September. July: Grow a maincrop variety and harvest in October.

Varieties Early Varieties

Maincrop varieties Stumpy Varieties

Bambino Mokum F1 Jeanette Amsterdam

Eskimo Ulyses Flyaway Chantenay Royal

Early Scarlet Horn Sweetheart Red Cored Supreme

Handy Tips 1. To increase soil ph (make more alkaline) garden lime needs to be added to the soil. To decrease ph (to make more acidic) add sulpher powder and/or dig in organic matter in the form of compost or manure. PH tester, suphur & lime available at your local garden centres.

2. Carrot fly is this vegetables worst enemy. It is a small black

fly which lays its eggs in the soil at the base of the plant. The tell-tale signs are reddish leaves which droop in sunny weather. As the maggot eats out the carrot root the foliage turns yellow and the root is liable to rot. The fly tends to be most common in May. There is no treatment so preventive measures are the only options: Cover seedlings with a plant fleece in spring and destroy thinnings. If carrot fly infestation is bad in your area then harvest early varieties no later than August and do not sow maincrop varieties until June. Infestation seems worst on dry soils so keep the ground damp.

This is our second in a series of profiles of EG Hockey Club Players in the run up to Summer 2012. Barry Middleton, named athlete of the year for 2009 by GB Hockey, takes a moment out of his jam-packed schedule to give us an insight into what might be in store for GB Hockey this year...

Tell us about the buzz in the run up to the Olympics. The Buzz is building around the Olympics and it is a very special time to be involved in British sport and we all know how lucky we are. Our selection isn’t done yet for the Olympics so nobody is getting too carried away yet though. Once people know they will actually be involved then I think we will see the excitement raise up again within the squad. We definitely feel more of a buzz around hockey from people all over the country than we ever have before and that is making things special for our sport.

What is your goal for the British team? Goals for the British team are to perform to the standards we believe we are capable of and if we do that then we will have a chance of being involved in the big games at the end of the tournament.

© Photographs John O’Brien: www.johnobrien.yourcllr.com

GB Hockey Captain Barry Middleton eyes the Olympic dream

What are the extra pressures of being the British Captain? I don’t really feel there are any extra pressures, maybe I have to be more careful what I say to the media.

Why did you choose East Grinstead Hockey Club, what makes it special? I chose East Grinstead due to the style of hockey they look to play at the club. And also because I have some very good friends who play for EG and I wanted to be in the same club side as them.

What is your greatest challenge in preparation for Summer 2012? Dealing with the expectations and pressures from people outside the squad.

Who or where do you draw inspiration from?

Profile questions: Year of Birth & Birthplace? 1984 / Doncaster First professional team joined? HGC, Holland When did you join East Grinstead Hockey Club? 2010 indoors - 2011 outdoors When did you become Captain of British Hockey? 2009

My parents have always been my inspiration.

Major Honours? European champions 2009

Any message to young potential professional sports players in this area?

Highlight of the last year? winning the German Championship with Club An Der Alster.

My best advice is to find the sport you enjoy if you want to pursue it professionally. It makes all the hard work easy (easier) if you love what you are doing.

Favourite hobby? Wii Mariokart Favourite Film? The Shawshank Redemption Favourite Song? Wordplay, Jason Mraz - White America, Eminem

WITH COMPLIMENT www.kitchensbespoke.co.u

Kitchens Bespoke, based in East Grinstead, is the brainchild of Rachael Workman a designer for over 17 years. Three years ago she decided to set up a ‘one stop shop’ to help clients create their perfect kitchen and she has not looked back. Rachael has found that being a female designer gives her an edge. “I design from a practical view point. Most people who use kitchens are women and I can relate to the need to balance aesthetics with function”. She works to her client’s budget and is always testing new products and materials to see what works, saving time and money for her customers. Kitchens Bespoke can also attend to lighting, decoration, flooring and building works if necessary. Arthur Conan Doyle in the Ashdown Forest area

Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is one of the world’s most enduring characters. Portrayed in countless ways on our screens over the years, his popularity never wanes. Conan Doyle lived By Brian W Pugh in nearby town Crowborough and regularly roamed our beloved Ashdown Forest. Brian Pugh, the curator of The Conan Doyle (Crowborough) Establishment, gives us an insight: Some background to the life of Arthur Conan Doyle is required before we look at his time in Crowborough and the Ashdown Forest. From 1897 he was living with his first wife Louise at the purpose built house Undershaw at Hindhead, all of his other residences were existing properties. Louise had been diagnosed with what was then called galloping consumption (TB) in 1893 and was not expected to live longer than a few months, in fact she lived for a further 13 years. During 1897 Conan Doyle met Jean Leckie. She became his tour and lecture organiser and a friendship blossomed, and in turn they fell in love but their relationship was purely platonic. It appears that the first time that Conan Doyle visited the Ashdown Forest was during January 1901 when he stayed for a few days at the Ashdown Forest Hotel and played golf. He did return in March 1901, for the census, taken on 31 March, shows that Conan Doyle, Miss Jean Leckie and his mother, Mary J. Doyle were staying at the Ashdown Forest Hotel - Forest Row, his mother perhaps acting as a chaperon. Louise finally passed away on 4 July 1906 and her funeral took place on 6 July at St Luke’s Church at nearby Grayshott. Obviously Conan Doyle was deeply affected by her death, but by late 1906, Conan Doyle was visiting Crowborough, staying with the Leckie family at their house in Lordswell Lane known as Monkstown. It does appear that this may have been the first time he felt well enough to go anywhere, as he had been so distraught by the death of Louise. Just down the lane from Monkstown was a cottage owned by a Mrs Scott-Malden, this was known as Little Windlesham; Conan Doyle fell in love with the house and soon purchased it. It was turned into a large family house, many extensions being made, and so the name was altered to Windlesham.

On 18 September 1907 Conan Doyle married Jean Leckie at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster, London. They took their honeymoon, travelling to Paris, Dresden and then a Mediterranean cruise. It is not known exactly when they moved on to Windlesham, they were still in Turkey on 1 November 1907, so it must have been late 1907 or even early 1908, but 1907 is the accepted year. You may ask, why did Conan Doyle decide to live in the Ashdown Forest area for twenty three years from 1907 until his death in 1930; this being roughly one third of his life - he lived in Crowborough longer than anywhere else. Of course finding Little Windlesham was the obvious the main reason, as golf player, perhaps the close proximity to Crowborough Beacon Golf Club was another reason, or perhaps the area reminded him of Hindhead. Whilst living there Conan Doyle wrote many Sherlock Holmes adventures, The Valley of Fear published in The Strand Magazine from September 1914 to May 1915. Much of this novel takes place at Groombridge Place, near Tunbridge Wells, on which fictional Birlstone Manor is modelled. In a

letter from Dame Jean Conan Doyle, (daughter of Arthur Conan Doyle) to The Conan Doyle Establishment she wrote “My father went over there (Groombridge Place) whenever we had guests staying at Windlesham who hadn’t stayed before. He was fascinated by the old house and felt that by showing it off to visitors from overseas he was introducing them to the very essence of England.” In The Valley of Fear the drunken garden is described by Dr. Watson as: ‘Rows of very ancient yew trees, cut into strange designs…’ and the secret seat is described, again by Dr. Watson: ‘…concealed from the eyes of any one approaching from the direction of the house, there was a stone seat.’ Both of theses features can still be seen at Groombridge Place. The Adventure of Black Peter a Holmes short story was published in The Strand Magazine in March 1904. During his visit to the Ashdown Forest in 1901 Conan Doyle must have taken walks around the area, for this Holmes story is based in Forest Row. The story is set in the fictional village of Woodman’s Lee, near Forest Row, (probably based on Coleman’s Hatch). Dr. Watson describes their arrival: ‘Alighting at the small wayside station, we drove for some

miles through the remains of widespread woods…’, without doubt this would have been the Forest Row station. Mentioned also is the Brambletye Hotel and playing golf; the hotel still exists and there is of course the Royal Ashdown Golf Club where Conan Doyle played golf during his visit in 1901. In 1912 Conan Doyle introduced another hero, Professor George Challenger in The Lost World; the second Challenger story The Poison Belt published in The Strand Magazine from March to July 1913, is based on Rotherfield, near Crowborough. In this adventure the South Downs, Lewes, Crowborough, the golf course, Jarvis Book and the Courier (the local newspaper) are all mentioned. The following is from the story: ‘ The sun had burst through the grey mists which veiled it, and the whole broad Weald was washed in golden light’. During the story Conan Doyle describes the view from the window of Challenger’s house in Rotherfield, but it is clearly describing the view from a window of his own house Windlesham as: ‘…vivid green stretches of the Crowborough golf course, all dotted with the players.’ Conan Doyle did like a good walk and would very often walk from

his home into Crowborough. One of his favourite walks was going up to Crowborough Cross and down St. Johns to the millponds on Ashdown Forest and back home. On 7 July 1930 at 08.17 hrs Conan Doyle died at his home Windlesham from a heart attack in his bedroom, next to his first floor study at Windlesham. On 11 July he was buried near his writing hut at Windlesham, the original headstone of his grave was of British oak.
