Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Index: Support Local Business

Welcome to the March issue! The last lap of Winter is finishing and Spring will soon be here, hurray! A fabulous time to get your home and garden up to scratch and hopefully we have plenty of local businesses to help you with all your projects. Mothers Day occurs this month and it is, as we all know, a very important day! See our potted history for a little inspiration. Sackville College needs help to get its snow leopard back to its former self. Read our article on page 6. We all know and love ‘Mount Noddy’ but where does the name come from? Local history expert Dorothy Hatswell provides a fascinating insight - see page 24. We hope that you can find all the services and don’t forget you can also locate our tradesmen services by looking at our website, www.egtradesmen.co.uk. Have a wonderful start to Spring. Nick Kellett. Master Jeweller. I am a master craftsman with over 40 years experience in the trade. Tired of the daily commute, I recently decided to close my prestigious retail shop in New Kings Road, London, to operate on my own from a studio nearer to home. So now I am able to offer my skilled services locally. I specialise in one off commissions for engagement, wedding and anniversary jewellery. I also offer a remake and alteration service. From the comfort of my local studio I can sit with clients to arrive at a bespoke design that fulfils all their expectations and fits their budget. Using an advanced computer program I can show images of exactly what the piece will look like from all angles. All items are hallmarked, marked with my trader logo and come with a full written valuation. Many years in the trade have enabled me to forge solid relationships with some of the foremost diamond and gem suppliers in the business.

Master craftsman with 40 years of experience

I have significant experience in training young apprentices who have gone on to achieve their own successes. So I plan to offer jewellery making courses for those aspiring to learn the craft. I will also be running ‘make your own wedding ring’ workshops, to make the exchanging of rings even more special.

Specialising in precious metals & gemstones.

Nick Kellett has relocated from his Fulham shop to the locality and is accepting jewellery commissions, alterations and repairs.

Fully insured and guaranteed work carried out to the highest of standards.

The Sackville’s Snow Leopard East Grinstead’s familiar landmark, the heraldic snow leopard, on top of the bell tower at Sackville College, has to be taken down for expensive repairs to the tower roof, mountings and surrounds. Gales this Winter caused the leopard to lean over at a very dangerous angle.

made in 1609, 17 days before he died. The almshouse was eventually built, for 21 poor men and 10 poor women.

The snow leopard is sometimes mistaken for a spotted dog. In fact the snow leopard or ‘ounce’ is part of the Sackville coat of arms. This does not mean that the Sackville family owned leopards, but the leopard symbol shows their high status, just as the lion denotes royalty. During the time of the Norman Conquest, Herbrand de Sauqueville came to England. His descendants married into other landowning families such as the Dalyngrigge family of Bodiam castle, or the Bakers of Sissinghurst. John Sackville married Margaret Boleyn, aunt of the more famous Anne Boleyn. This made the Sackvilles cousins of Queen Elizabeth I, who trusted and employed her cousins. Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset founded Sackville College almshouse in his will, which he

The almshouse still serves its original purpose and provides affordable accommodation for elderly local residents of limited means. Sackville College is also a Grade 1 listed building and an historic attraction in East Grinstead. It is thought that there was a leopard on the tower from the eighteenth century. Visitors can see the predecessor of the present leopard, inside Sackville College. After standing out on the tower for 130 years, he has been brought inside. Although his ears, tail and tongue have been mended and he looks rather battered, he is much loved, especially by children of roughly the same height. The present leopard was put up on 10th January 1986, thanks to the generosity of Mrs Davy, a former Assistant Warden. He was carved by Glyn Foulkes of Burledon, Hampshire, a sculptor of ship figureheads. The leopard is made of laminated mahogany, protected and painted with epoxy systems (a type of resin). The leopard will have to be removed by crane as it is very heavy, then an assessment of the repairs needed for the tower roof, mounting and support will be carried out, before any work can begin. This will all be very expensive. The leopard on the tower is a landmark in the town, and represents a tradition of at least 160 years. It would be sad if he has to be taken down permanently. Please support the Sackville College Repair Fund by visiting for a guided tour when the college is open in the Summer, or by supporting fundraising events that will be held there this year. Details of opening times and events are on the website: www.sackvillecollege.org.uk. Donations can be sent to Sackville College, High Street, East Grinstead, RH19 3BX, or handed in at the office on weekday mornings. If you would like to arrange a group visit, phone 01342 323414, or email admin@sackvillecollege. org.uk.

A Walk on the Wild Side Would it be presumptuous to say that we are starting to see the back of Winter... And as the days start to lengthen slowly, the first spring shoots emerge. It makes sense then that one of the first to arrive is the pungent: Wild Garlic. Pungency being the flavour of Spring. Imagine the energy that is required to break through those first chilled, frosty mornings to reach skyward; this is pungency in action! And you can feel this if you consume something pungent, as you feel it warm from the inside to the surface just like spring shoots pushing forth from under the ground. The stillness of Winter is slowly being replaced with a frenetic energy as birds, insects and animals begin their natural courtship. Spend enough time outdoors through this time and you will notice the tempo as it rises and rises with lengthening of the days and the rising of the temperature. The air will start to fill with the heady fragrances of cherry blossoms, meadowsweet and elderflower. Warm days and intoxicating fragrances. Wild garlic is probably the easiest of all the wild foods to identify and is one of the earliest of spring plants to arrive. It is usually that you can smell it before you can see it. Always growing in such numbers that the air is filled with its pungent aroma. Once located, just by simply crushing its leaf will be emitted a wonderful pungent garlic aroma. Wild Garlic, Allium ursinum, is a member of the Liliaceae family. It is generally found in open

woodlands or hedgebanks, and in my experience very close to a source of water. Either close to a stream or on the bend of a road where the tyres splash water as they pass. I would only use roadside plants for learning to ID and not for consumption due to the risk of being contaminated with heavy metals by the local traffic. The leaves are broad and and taper, almost bladelike. The bulb underground is a singular bulb, unlike shop bought garlic. Only in early Spring just as the shoots are rising, are the bulbs worth eating. As a forager, once the leaves are resplendent and plentiful, it is these I am after. Garlic’s use and benefits in some of the most chronic ailments such as hypertension, high cholesterol, thrombosis, arteriosclerosis, diabetes and cancer have been well researched and publicised. But what probably is less known but as well understood is its use for treating respiratory, gastrointestinal and epidermal system infections, both acute and chronic. This is due to its anti-fungal, anti-viral, antibacterial, anti-parasitic and immunostimulant properties.

Therefore wild garlic is a beneficial addition to the diet, promoting the general health of the body when used regularly. It is particularly effective in reducing high blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels. All parts of the plant can be used and the juice can also be applied externally to rheumatic and arthritic joints where its mild irritant action and stimulation to the local circulation can be of benefit. Wild garlic is incredibly versatile as both a food and a medicine and grows in such abundance that one could be considered almost criminal not to add this to your diet. The volatile oils in the leaves will evaporate if it is cooked for too long so I suggest making use of it in the following ways: It makes a wonderfully pungent pesto sauce, mixed through with chicken in pasta is divine. I also preserve the leaves in salt to make a great garlic salt or by adding just a little salt they can be lacto-

fermented and preserved to use in the wintertime. Some brave souls add it to their juicing recipes! Generally where you would add garlic you can use wild garlic. Just go easy, add a little at a time as it is very powerful in flavour. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

Chicken & vegetable parcels Wrap chicken breasts and finely sliced vegetables in their own little packages to steam to perfection. Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 15 mins. Cooking time: 40 mins

Ingredients: 4 skinless, boneless uncooked chicken breasts 4 spring onions trimmed and sliced 1 carrot cut into matchstick strips 1 courgette cut into matchstick strips 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder 1 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp reduced salt soy sauce 1 pinch ground black pepper

What to do: 1. Cut 4 pieces of greaseproof paper or baking parchment, each measuring approximately 30 cm square. 2. Put each chicken breast onto a separate square of greaseproof paper. 3. Mix the vegetables together and place an equal amount on top of each piece of chicken. Sprinkle with five spice powder (if using), the ginger, soy sauce and black pepper. 12

4. Fold up the paper to wrap up the chicken completely. 5. Put the parcels into a steamer (see tip). Cover and steam for 35-40 minutes. 6. Check that the chicken is properly cooked. Unwrap one parcel and insert a sharp knife into the thickest part. The juices should run clear with no traces of pink. 7. Serve the chicken in the parcels, along with vegetables and noodles, rice or potatoes. Tip 1: You don’t need a fancy steamer to make this recipe. A fold-out steamer tray or a colander that fits inside a saucepan will do nicely. Tip 2: It’s important when steaming to make sure that the water never boils dry. Check from time to time and top up with extra boiling water if needed.

Earn your place Every plant in the garden has to earn its place, it must give some reward for the time and care put into its being there and this is especially true in Winter. On the cold short winter days, my brisk pace is sometimes slowed to peek into an interesting front garden, a beautiful Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ - known more commonly as corkscrew or twisted hazel – looks stunning in its detail of finely corkscrewed branches, the low sun reflecting in the dewdrops, soon it will have pretty catkins and then it will fade from view as the other plants and shrubs that surround it begin to grow. On warmer winter days a slight scent arouses interest; I followed my nose to a shady corner where I was confronted with Daphne aureomarginata, not a lady who had lost her way but a mature shrub covered in highly scented flowers, heartwarming on a cold day.

Hamamelis, known to many as Witch Hazel is perfect for the winter garden. It has a spicy fragrance and fine spidery flowers in reds, orange and yellow. It can be the centrepiece of a border, shining in its glory when all that surrounds it lays dormant. If you garden on a slope, is there a more perfect flower for the top than Hellebore? With no effort you can gaze up into its perfectly formed flower, if you cut away the old and shabby looking leaves then the flower can really show off its beauty – they are the perfect transition from Winter to Spring. So when you’re planning your planting, spare a thought for all the winter beauties that can brighten the dullest, coldest winters day – they certainly earn their place in your garden. The not so humble Daffodil complete irony, the etymology of this word is unknown but may relate to a ‘darker side’... It is frequently linked to the Greek myth of Narcissus who, of course, became so obsessed with his own reflection in water (he would have been on ‘selfie’ overload in modern times...) that he eventually fell in and drowned; the narcissus plant then sprang from where he died. There is no solid evidence, however, that the flower was named after him and it had been around long before the myth. Narcissus poeticus which grows in Greece, has a fragrance that has been described as ‘intoxicating’ and some suggest that the plant was named for its scent (and not the youth). From the Greek word: ναρκάω, narkao, “I grow numb”, narkao sounding a little like Narcissus... Yet others maintain the names comes from the daffodils bending over streams representing the youth who so long admired his own reflection, a far more romantic theory. It is worth remembering, however, that the name Narcissus was not uncommon for men in Roman times, so perhaps it really had nothing to do with the Greek legend. Who really knows? Although not the most spectacular of flower-world, daffodils yet hold a special place in our hearts & minds. Perhaps only those in the North of the Northern Hemisphere, who must grit their teeth and live through the cold months of Autumn/Winter, truly appreciate the symbolic joy that the first daffodil blooms offer. Not only do they give the first cemented welcome of Spring, they repeat the message everywhere by their colourful and sudden omnipresence. This sentiment was firmly cemented in the English psyche by William Wordsworth with his famous poem: ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze’. Daffodil’s official Latin name is ‘Narcissus’. By

18

The word ‘daffodil’ itself comes from ‘addodel’ which comes from the word asphodel. An asphodel is in fact a different flower! But the two flowers seem to have been confused in common speech and the one lent its name to Botanical drawing, c. 1659 the other. To us Brits daffodil was obviously a preferred term to Narcissus! There were other terms for the plant such as ‘Lent lily’ but these have all faded away. If it hasn’t happened already, I’m sure we’ll soon all welcome in a burst of yellow daffodils which will usher in Spring at last.

Mother’s Day: A potted history

In the 1500’s people would return to their ‘mother church’, the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday - the fourth Sunday of Lent. This would have been either a large local church, or more often the cathedral of the area. This activity was commonly called going “a-mothering”. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their own mother church, most usually with their mothers, fathers and other family members. Sometimes it was the only time that the whole family could gather together, since on other days they were prevented from doing so by conflicting working hours as many were in service. Later, young people who were in service were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families (whether returning to their ‘mother church’ or not). Some would pick wild flowers along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers.

she had started and to set aside a day for everyone to honour their mothers: “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world’. Anna’s own mother, Ann Jarvis, had been a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War and had created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Due to Anna Jarvis’ campaign efforts, several US states officially recognized Mother’s Day. Then in 1914 the president, Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day as the second Sunday in May, ‘a national holiday to honour all mothers’. Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother’s Day, when the holiday was, inevitably, commercialised she became resentful and angry that companies would profit from the holiday - what would she have thought of modern holidays! By the early 1920’s, Hallmark and other companies had started selling Mother’s Day cards. Jarvis became so embittered she even tried to rescind Mother’s Day - the day she had worked so

By the early 20th century the tradition of Mothering Sunday had started to wane. However in the US a campaign, for an official ‘Mother’s Day’, spear-headed by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia, was well under way by 1908. Anna wanted to honour her own mother by continuing the work

hard to establish. From her point of view, it was supposed to be about sentiment, not about profit. Her original intention was that a show of appreciation should be made to mothers with a personal letter expressing love and gratitude. Jarvis started organising boycotts and threatened lawsuits to try to stop this the tide of commercialization... all in vain. The established Mother’s Day holiday was later assimilated into other countries as well as our own, as we know. Here, it came to be synonymous with Mothering Sunday. In modern consciousness they are now seen as one and the same occasion. Perhaps spare a thought for Anna Jarvis, who worked so hard to establish Mother’s Day, and her original intentions for the day; and this year as well as the usual card, flowers, etc. why not write a letter to your mother as well... food for thought.

Mothers’ quote

As it is Mother’s Day this month we’re dedicating this featurette to mums and mums only!

God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Rudyard Kipling

Ways you can be pampered this Mothers Day! You may need to drop a few hints but here are some ideas you can present to your kids for the little things they can do to make your Mothers Day very special:

Breakfast in Bed Even if it’s a bowl of cornflakes brought to you, it’s still a luxury that costs nothing! Pancakes are also always a winner.

Flowers The kids can pick some from the garden and or make some out of tissue paper! And of course a bouquet is always welcome.

Slippers! They can warm your slippers on a radiator and bring these to you just before you get out of bed... comfy.

Chocolate Hand-dipped chocolate-covered Rice Krispies treats, easy and fun to make and all for you! (well maybe they can have one too...).

Cleaning your bedroom Yes! What a wonderful present... even if they simply vacuum your carpet, it all helps.

Local History Notes

Mount Noddy by Dorothy Hatswell

A name which is frequently asked about is Mount Noddy. It is the name of the recreation ground and the cemetery at the end of St Johns Road in East Grinstead. However, the name is not unique to East Grinstead. There are at least seven or eight in Sussex. The name occurs in Chichester, Danehill, Anstye, Worth, Ifield and West Ashling. Two others, I also know of are just over the county borders, with one at Charlwood in Surrey and another at Hever in Kent. There is even a house with the name in Western Australia. Probably built by an emigrant from Sussex, as we do seem to be at the epicentre of its use. The word “noddy” has been in use from early times as meaning a fool or simpleton. It occurs frequently in Shakespeare and other works with that meaning. 26

It also was the name for the Jack or Knave in playing cards and there was a card game in which the Jack was the highest card in each suit, called “Noddy”. Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote in his A Christmas Carol Poem: “Wise Men playing at Noddy”. There lingers a hint of this in the still popular card game of cribbage where the Jack of the same suit as the card turned up when the pack is cut scores “one for his head” and if a Jack is the card that is cut the dealer gets “two for his heels”! In some parts of the north an April fool is referred to as an “April Noddy”. It has been suggested that it is an old name for a slag heap and certainly many instances occur near to known iron working sites. However no-one has ever, as far as I can ascertain, found the name in any old documents

living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk

relating to the industry. As it has been extensively researched by the Wealden Iron Research Group who have accessed thousands of original documents mostly in record offices but some still in private hands it does seem strange, that if this is the meaning why no proof of it has yet been found. However, the theory that the name relates to the iron industry is somewhat strengthened by the fact that there is at least one example of the name in France. It is to be found on the banks of the River Seine between the coast and Rouen. Rouen is in the Pays-de-Bray, the area in France which is closely linked geographically and geologically to the Weald of Kent and Sussex which was the one of the first areas in England that produced iron on an industrial scale. its height during the C15th and C16th ordnance (mounted guns;artillery) was being produced in the Weald in vast quantities for use in the Hundred Years War. The connection with the meaning “fool” could be extended perhaps to “useless” which might be applied to slag, but it is rather tenuous. Michael Leppard has traced the source of the word, meaning slag, back to Rev. J.M.Neale (famous Warden of Sackville College) via W.H.Hills. Leppard conjectured that it is possible that Neale, born in 1818, was within living recollection of the iron industry hereabouts and could have recalled its use as another word for the waste from the furnaces, from his early years. Another suggestion is that this was an elaborate joke. Rich people in the C18th who built themselves large houses in the countryside were apt to call them rather pretentious names. Often they were prefixed by the word “Mount”, as it suggested a more imposing dwelling than it might be, at the same time romanticising the name. This was the era, of course, when the younger generations of well-to-do families were sent on

the Grand Tour of Europe which no doubt gave some of them delusions of grandeur! As a gibe at such behaviour you can see how the poor would find pleasure in mocking them by attaching the prefix “Mount” to their own cottages and adding the “noddy” which was a common name for a fool or simpleton. This theory only holds good if there were no earlier examples of the name used for fields rather than dwellings. It has to be said that the examples of early field names quoted are usually spelled very differently. Of course this was age when spelling was not standardised

and it has been inferred that a reference to a “Mow Knotty” in 1773 was an attempt to write “Mount Noddy”. This could be, but so could other variations. For example there are instances of the word “mow” being used for a hayfield. I tend to think that the reason for the name may never be proved satisfactorily. It is of such local usage and the slag theory, while not disproved, is definitely not proven. In any case I like to think that our Sussex ancestors were having a quiet joke at the expense of their “betters”. Good Luck to them!

Interior design: A self-made Journey (continued)

Renovation, large or small, can be costly and time consuming. Often the thought of changing your home is too daunting to contemplate. Your loved ones who have undertaken this will have told you about the mess and inconvenience, the dust that gets everywhere, poor workmanship or builders that turn up when they feel like it, or worse don’t turn up at all. All of these things can be true, but it doesn’t have to be if you prepare well. FOCUS ON THE END RESULT. Something in your life must need to change for you to consider renovation in the first place, so think seriously about this and focus on it. How will it enhance your life? Will it stop arguments about space? Will you be better off financially in the long run? Are you just bored and feel like a change? Once the work is finished you will forget the bad and appreciate the good. USE PEOPLE YOU CAN TRUST. I know this is easy to say, but you probably know someone who can recommend who they used. Go and have a look – closely – and ask questions about timescales, cleanliness and problems that arose. Ask for a couple of clients of theirs that you can call. People are often only too happy to share their experiences and will be honest. Ask the right questions – if being on time is important to you then make sure you find out about their time management. Also remember local tradespeople are less likely to let you down if they are around the corner!

SET A BUDGET and be upfront about it. Don’t give your builder free reign with materials and suppliers if your budget is tight. Make sure they are aware about how much you have to spend as they need to be paid too. There will be areas where corners can be cut but this will ultimately affect the final finish so have a frank discussion and compromise where necessary. Include things like rubbish removal and delivery costs as these can add up. Understand the difference between an estimate and a quote. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. There are infinite choices in furniture, accessories, fabrics, wallpapers and paint colours. Choosing the wrong thing is costly and will feel like a compromise. Take advice from retailers, decorators and suppliers and consider the proportions in your home. Draw a floorplan and mark where everything will go. Alternatively employ an interior designer to do this for you as this stage is highly time consuming and often frustrating! RMEMBER THE SMALL STUFF. Fixtures like taps, wall sockets and switches can make a huge difference to the finish. Consider the style of your home and create a cohesive look. Think about the positioning of your lighting as this is expensive to change once it is fixed and ensure access to change lightbulbs. Stick to your plan, weather the storm & relish the end result.

Wakehurst Place in the 21st Century

Here is our Q&A with Simon Allen, Plt Off RAFVR(T), Officer Commanding 1343 (East Grinstead) Squadron ATC:

Pinging Tree Stories Across the Sussex Countryside

What are the Air Cadets all about? How do they relate to the RAF?

There’s a whole new way to explore one of the region’s best-known tourist attractions as Wakehurst embraces the latest mobile technology in a groundbreaking project. The widest implementation of outdoor iBeacons means visitors to Kew’s country garden in Sussex can now have information at their fingertips in a matter of seconds. By downloading a free ‘app’ (either at home or when they arrive at the gardens), the humble mobile phone or tablet can unlock a host of cool facts and activities every time visitors pass one of the special beacons which are hidden across the 500-acre estate at Ardingly. “We have over 50 iBeacons across Kew’s two sites, Wakehurst and Kew Gardens”, explains Jon Little who headed the project. “This technology has been used to great effect in indoor setting such as museums and shopping malls, but we decided to test its capability in the wilds of our botanic gardens. The initial results prove most promising as we can unlock many of the secrets about some of our rare and beautiful plants.” Currently the Discover Kew app is available, free, for iPhone users with the Android app due for release shortly. Just search for Discover Kew in the app store. “Phone or iPad in hand, visitors can explore Wakehurst’s new Brilliant Bark Trail”, says interpretation producer Astrid Krumins. “You can meet eight of our fabulous North American trees exploring their stunning bark and uncover some of Kew’s science stories behind these trees. There’s something for everyone whether you crave facts about the species or enjoy hands-on challenges.” The app doesn’t need wi-fi to find each location; the beacons simply ping necessary information to devices running the app. A GPS map shows where the user is in relation to the brilliant bark trees and key features at Wakehurst such as the Millennium Seed Bank, restaurant, toilets and the visitor centre. The pilot will run for three months before being evaluated. If successful it could expand into seasonal trails and visitor information.

The Air Training corps was formed on the 5th February 1941 originally to train young men for service in the RAF. The rank structure is the same as the RAF and the drill performed by cadets is the same as the regular air force. The aims are: a. To promote and encourage among young people a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force. b. To provide training which will be useful both in the services and in civilian life. c. To foster the spirit of adventure, and to develop the qualities of leadership and good citizenship. How did the local branch get started? 1343 Squadron East Grinstead was formed on the 1st April 1941 and has been going strong ever since. How would young people benefit from being members of the Air Cadets? The young people who join the ATC get to experience a number of activities including flying, gliding, shooting, various adventure training activities such as hill walking, canoeing and climbing. Cadets can take the Duke of Edinburgh Award and assist at the Remembrance Parade collecting for poppy appeal and the Battle of Britain appeal. All these activities help develop confidence, team working skills and leadership skills. They also take part in an aviation academic program leading to a BTEC qualification. As well as all these things that look good on a CV they have a lot of fun! What do you hope to achieve both locally and across the region? The aim for the squadron, Sussex Wing and the corps as a whole is to increase the number of cadets, so raising the number of young people enjoying all these opportunities. Another benefit of this is the more cadets we have on the squadron, the more support we can give to local activities. The squadron is holding an open evening on the 19th March to allow prospective cadets and staff to come to the squadron to see what we do. The Squadron parades Tuesday and Thursday evening between 7:15pm - 9:15pm and always welcome enquiries on those nights.
