Flat roof repairs

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Attracting Bees and Butterflies We’d all love more wildlife in the garden and what better way to start than planting bee and butterfly friendly plants. With their bright colours and rich pollen or nectar source they create the perfect habitat for these important pollinators. The best approach is to plant a mix of species so that you can provide habitat from early spring through to late autumn. The pollinators are important for a lot of plants because without them they wouldn’t seed and/or fruit. Sadly our bees and butterfly’s are in decline so every little effort we make in our gardens, however large or small can help reduce this downward trend. Below are just some of the plants that are good for pollinators but you can visit the RHS website on their ‘Get Your Garden Buzzing’ page where they are providing comprehensive lists for you to choose from. Open Wireless Networks: the Wild West on Your Doorstep Have you shouted your bankcard’s PIN while paying? No? Yet many of us do the digital equivalent when blithely using public wireless networks found in coffee shops, airports and elsewhere. Here is some digital protection for when you swim with wifi sharks. There are three main issues when using coffee shopstyle open networks. These are snooping on your communication, infection from another machine and, most challenging, hotspots created to be digital traps. On an open network other computers can read the insecure data sent to and from your computer. Many websites still do not secure all their communication with you leaving your stream of data open for others to read and modify. Fraudsters may impersonate you to take over your accounts at these websites. A virtual private network (VPN) makes your data unreadable on the wifi network, safe from snooping and modifying. Heard of the plans to force your broadband provider to monitor your browsing? A VPN prevents them knowing what you do online. Public networks often allow traffic to flow between users. This means that an infected machine could pass on this infection to your computer. Your computer’s

Finally, malicious wifi hotspots. These may invisibly redirect you to fake websites in order to collect your login details or plant malware on your computer. Wifi protocols still leave you unable to confirm the identity and safety of open networks. Frankly, why do we use them at all? Safety tips: • Turn off automatic connection to wireless networks. • Clear your wifi network connection history. • Watch out for signs that you are being targeted such as firewall warnings combined with VPN connections that keep failing. • If in doubt, you may prefer walking away rather than potentially mopping up after digital havoc. As for internet banking, save it until you get to a secure environment. Did everyone catch my PIN number? RL Computer Solutions See ad on page opposite

Looking good in 2016 With the new spring colours beginning to show in our countryside, it’s time to look into our wardrobes and make a few changes.

pictures and those are the colours available this season. Muted greens, mint, various blues, lemon, pinks, all gentle on the complexion and easy to wear. And while we are on the garden route, be prepared to wear a flock of birds, budding branches, leaves and flowers within the prints of your dresses and tops – not the big floral prints of 2015 but more gentle botanical studies. Prefer something a bit more vibrant? You’ll find citric green, vibrant yellow, bright red, cobalt blue – plain, or contained within vibrant geometric prints.

2016 is a leap year, when traditionally, if only for a day, a woman can propose marriage, thereby wearing the ‘trousers’. Most modern day women would argue that we have earned the right every day, but we are not here to debate that point. The fashion question here is, wide or narrow, short or long? And the answer for 2016 is that anything goes. For those wanting a change from the skinny look, you can wear a flare or wider cut with pride, but this year consider the easier styles of elastic waisted, harem type pants in a bright print: an easy holiday look, teamed with a baggy top and either a cork wedge shoe or flat sparkly sandal. Trouser lengths remain fluid: calf length to very long are all acceptable. Fancy culottes or long shorts? This is your year!

Look out for the inevitable patriotic blue, white and red of an Olympic year – and of course, for those who wish to follow the trend, the athletic look with flat trainers and plimsolls. But bling them up – with metallic colours, a bit of sparkle or a bright colour. With Easter arriving early this year (end of March), maybe consider the yellows and oranges of the season in lightweight knitwear or maybe statement jacket. If the weather stays chilly, these work very well with the navy, black and grey of the winter season but if it’s warm, then team them with white and neutrals – either way you’re still Easter chic!

Worried about those extra pounds you’ve gained from comfort eating this winter? No worries. Tuck them away under the easy fit tops of the season: long line shirts and jackets, layered knitwear, with round and v-necks. Put a faux suede/ chamois jacket on top – maybe quilted jacket or gilet. Trying to get away from trousers? Dresses are still a major look, teamed with a cardigan for cooler days.

A local view of the Titanic disaster Local History Notes by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum Two people who have connections with the East Grinstead area were drowned in the Titanic disaster of 1912. One of them, Charles Shorney, lived with his parents in the grounds of Heron’s Ghyll, a large estate just south of East Grinstead on the Ashdown Forest. Charles Joseph Shorney was born in 1889 to Austin, a cabinet maker, who lived in Oak Cottage, Heron’s Ghyll and Margaret Nelson. Margaret Shorney died in 1904 and Charles’s father remarried, his new wife was Mary Anne Naughton. Charles was sixteen at the time and whether the decision to leave home was partly connected to the arrival of a step-mother, is conjecture, but he did spend the next few years travelling the world as a gentleman’s valet. He spoke fluent French and worked in Paris, Cannes and Biarritz. On one visit to America he became engaged to an American, Marguerite Morphy. He wanted to set up a taxi business in New York and returned to England to collect his share of family money to help in this enterprise. He voyaged back on the Oceanic, but had a very rough crossing and he decided to not use the same vessel for his return. He booked on the maiden voyage of the Titanic and sailed on April 12th 1912. On the day he sailed he sent his father a postcard saying : “This is the boat. She is a peach.... Get to New York next Thursday. Will

Road. Albert Winser served on the Urban District Council for several years. He was also a keen marksman and regularly won prizes for his shooting. He often shot with his friend, Captain Oxley, of Fen Place, Turners Hill.

Charles’s photograph appears on a family tree website, along with his father and stepmother, Annie. He is described as “visiting” in early 1912.

write again later. Sea quite calm.” Charles did not reach New York “next Thursday” or indeed ever. His body was never found. His father went on to work as farm bailiff at a private mental hospital on Ditchling Common. The second person who went down with the Titanic when it struck an iceberg and sank, was born in East Grinstead. He was Rowland Winser, a watchmaker and jeweller who lived and worked at 214, London Road. His father, Albert had also been a watchmaker. Born in Brighton in 1846, Albert married his wife, Emily Day, who was born in Felbridge, in early 1873, and moved to East Grinstead. They had three children, Emily Kate, Rowland and their youngest child, Frank. His business premises were at 17, London

living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk

By 1901, Rowland, now married himself and with a four-month old daughter, Jessie, had followed in his father’s footsteps and opened a jeweller’s shop at 214, London Road. Although both he and his father described themselves as “ watchmakers” the likelihood is that they merely repaired them and did not actually make the watches themselves. Shortly afterwards Jessie had a sister, Gwendolen, born two years after her. They were followed by three sons, Rowland Hibberd in 1905, Norman Eric in 1907 and Jack in 1910. His younger brother, Francis James (Frank) was also married. In 1911 he and his wife, Kate Wood, a schoolteacher, also from East Grinstead were living at 88, Putney Road, Balham. He was a dispensing chemist. For some reason Rowland does not appear on the 1911 census, but his father has retired now to Tenterden, Kent, with his wife, Emily, and their daughter, Emily Kate, also makes an appearence. Tenterden has a lot of “Winsers” living there at the time. In fact, Rowland does not appear in any records again, until he is listed as “presumed drowned” on the crew

list of fatalities from the Titanic. What he did in the twelve years between these two references, is of course, not known but it would seem reasonable to suppose that he was at sea for at least part of this time. His reasons for a change of career are also unclear but in 1911 his wife is named as a visitor at her married sister’s house in Southampton, together with her youngest two children. Rowland’s brother-in-law, James Law, gives his occupation as “ships steward” on the America’s Line. Whether his experiences made Rowland think of a change of occupation is a possibility.

Ethel Badham, (nee Hibbert) and her husband who is a fruiterer, also living there is Lillian Hibbert, yet another sister, who is working as an assistant in the fruiterer’s business. Rowland signed on the Titanic on April 4th 1912, giving his address as 2, Nightingale Grove, Southampton. Whether this had been the family home before he sailed in not known. He had previously served as a steward

aboard the Majestic. The majestic was replaced by the Titanic and so Rowland was, presumably, transferred too. He boarded at Southampton and was earning £3.15s pcm. He was known on board under two names: Rowland Winser or George Evans! Again no reasons for this double identity are known. Along with about 1500 others he went down with the ship on the night of April 12th 1912. His body was never recovered. His widow, Jessie did not remarry and died in 1961.

The three oldest children are not living with their mother but were living with various close relations. Jessie Ellen and Rowland Hibbert were living with their maternal grandparents, Tom and Annie Hibbert in Basingstoke. Gwendolen, aged 8 is staying

Strange Easter Customs Finland

You couldn’t be accused of confusing Finnish Easter traditions with Halloween. In times gone by it was thought that evil spirits and witches would roam around the country, doing mischief on the Saturday before Easter. This throwback belief is a good reason for a bit of fun. Kids wear old and oversized clothes and headscarves, painting freckles and rosy cheeks on their faces, and whisking birch twigs decorated with feathers and crepe paper. Knocking on doors, the children cast a good spell on you and kindly ask you to put some sweets and money into a pot. And they thank you with a twig. At Easter, Olde Worlde Finns would ignite large bonfires to keep the mischievous spirits at bay. These days the fires still get lite but just as an excuse for a community get together. Corfu Corfu’s Easter celebrations are famous, attracting tens of thousands of tourists, from mainland Greece, and beyond. A crazy custom that would never be allowed in health and safety conscious Britain is to hurl 20

earthenware pots half full of water, from great heights, at precisely 11am on the Saturday while other people look on. This noisy custom originated in Corfu towns but has extended to the villages. Apparently it was taken from the conquering Venetians who, on New Year’s day, used to throw their old things from the windows in order to receive new ones for the New Year. The Corfiots drew on this tradition to celebrate the most important Greek holiday, Easter. Nowadays, the ‘old things’ have been replaced by pots and jugs full of water, which make for an even louder noise upon impact. If you plan to visit, stand back people - the street cleaners must be very forgiving after that much merriment! It is also thought that the peculiar custom may also have partial roots in the biblical passage “Thou, O Lord, raise me up, that I may crush them as a potter’s vessel”, and as Easter falls in the beginning of the plantation season, the time when newly-harvested produce from the land was stored in new pots and the old ones were destroyed.

Garden Guide this March

What a mild winter it’s been this year, so many daffodils already in flower, competing with the crocus and the snowdrop, but on a blue sky and sunshine day it all looks absolutely gorgeous. The other benefit of a mild winter is how beautiful the camellias are looking, perfectly formed rosettes of colour rather than the brown blobs of frost bitten petals. Each day I look at the lawn and say, when there is a dry spell, I must get out and mow the lawn… February does seem somewhat early for lawn mowing but the grass is so long - a mix of the wet and mild conditions – that if left it will become mossy and its condition will deteriorate. There’s always plenty to do in March and it’s worth investing your time now in the garden to tidy everything up and prepare for the months ahead. If you are

planning new hedges now is the time to buy the bare root stock. Prepare the ground by digging it over and digging in a good compost such as farmyard or horse manure, then plant your bare root stock straight into the prepared area, give it a good watering to bed it in. Likewise with any new shrubs you are planning – now is the perfect time for planting. This is the last opportunity (until they lose their leaves in the Autumn) to move any deciduous shrubs. Dig them up with a large root ball and transplant into a well-prepared (as above) planting hole. Ensure they establish with plenty of water during a dry spell. Evergreen shrubs are best moved after they have flowered e.g. rhododendrons, the method is the same as moving the deciduous shrubs. This then gives the shrub a growing season before its next flowering. As well as new plantings you need to get stuck into your borders now to tidy them up and sort them out before everything starts growing again. Remove the weeds, cut old stems back down to ground level, taking care not to damage any new shoots.

Large clumps of perennials can be divided and transplanted and new self-sown seedlings can be moved to more appropriate positions in the border. Gaps can be filled with new plants. Fork over between the plants and then apply a good thick mulch. Always work from the back of the border to the front. Sheds can be tidied and greenhouses scrubbed, the patio can be cleared of moss and weeds. Tidy your patio pots and add colour with spring bedding (only if mild) or flowering bulbs. The gardening season has definitely started…

Business Profile: Q&A with local Garden Designer, Gail Peel of Nightingale Garden Design What inspired you to become a garden designer? Having been an obsessive gardener for over 20 years, I took my years of experience and set up a maintenance business helping others to look after their gardens. I have always loved designing borders and creating exciting planting combinations. I was often asked to redesign aspects of my clients gardens, so I trained at Plumpton Horticultural College, gaining a Diploma with distinction in Garden Design. What do you pride yourself on most in terms of customer service? I want my clients to feel they have a detailed, comprehensive service from a knowledgeable designer and plants woman. I listen carefully to all their likes (and dislikes) and get a very thorough view of what they want. I can then use this to create an individually tailored design that meets their needs. Some may want a colourful, flower-filled garden that they can potter and relax in. Others want a low maintenance garden to entertain friends. Many clients want a great-looking, family-friendly garden which can double up as a children’s play area with an adult-relaxing space. Good garden design can achieve a great balance of function and form which creates a garden that can be used all year round.

What is the most challenging aspect of garden design? Trying to get several different areas into a tiny garden or to create a useable space out of a steeply sloping plot; it is very satisfying to take a neglected, tired site and create a beautiful garden. What service could you bring a customer that others could not? I have a huge plant knowledge and really enjoy putting together great planting combinations which will look good for months at a time that enhance the hard landscaping and in the style the client prefers. For more information see ad below.

For instance Lisa and her daughter Olivia undertook the brave fundraising challenge last month to ‘swim the channel’ at Kings Centre, with her sister-inlaw and her sister. And Lisa’s not even that keen on swimming!

Lisa and Olivia

One of the mothers at the Turners Hill Primary School where one of Lisa’s children goes to school, Vicky Crawley, is also undertaking a triahlon challenge to support MDS UK with her friend Rob Summerfield. On the weekend of the 12th/13th March their programme starts at East Court at 7am, then they cycle down Worthway to where it meets the road at the bottom of Tulleys, then take the Balcombe Rd cycle to Horley. From Horley they cycle to Charlwood, then across and back of Ifield, coming out on A264 Wimlands just north of Horsham. Across Horsham pick up Downslink either at Christ’s Hospital or Southwater. Steyning, following lanes west to Washington. There is a lane here that heads up to South Downs just west of Chanctonbury Rings. Walk from here to Eastbourne Pier - South Downs way. This is exactly 50 miles. The cycling should take about 5 hours and they’re hoping the walking will take 22 hours, then an hours drive to East Grinstead and one hour in the pool and they are done! Lisa and her daughter will then join them in the pool for the final swim. Courageous people indeed! To support Vicky, visit her fundraising page on uk.virginmoneygiving.com.

Weirwood Reservoir:

History and Nature Reserve Society

Weir Wood Reservoir\View of Nature Reserve from the layby © Bob Johnson

Before human intervention, the Weirwood Reservoir was a valley of the River Medway. By their nature, river valleys are ancient sites, and this valley is no exception. The warmer, wetter climate that followed the last glaciation meant a much greater flow of water into the river. Thus sometime between 6000 and 2300 BC, when people of the Middle Stone Age hunted in the area, they might have seen a broad deep river filling the valley, closely surrounded by a thick forest of oak and alder. Two Mesolithic flint implements were found in the exceptionally dry conditions of 1976, showing that people were in the area, both were small cutting tools of primitive design.

There is a great gap in the records until the use of the site as an iron works in Roman times. A large slagheap at Walesbeech (beside an inlet on the south bank) marks the precise location. The slag was the residue of an iron smelter or bloomery, which may have been worked for a period sometime between 70 and 210 AD. There was also a late 16th Century iron furnace and forge named “Stone” located by the river at a site now under the west end of the reservoir. The actual reservoir itself however, originated in 1954 when a stream from the River Medway, in the valley south of Standen House was dammed. Some of the agricultural land became water

meadows, hedges grew and un-grazed fields started to revert to scrub. This created a set of different habitats for wildlife. The reservoir was, at that time, the largest area of open water in the whole of Sussex. Naturally bird watchers were soon attracted to the site by the sheer numbers and range of species one could see. In autumn and spring passing migrants pause here; while in winter flocks of duck, geese, etc. find shelter. Then in summer there is a rich variety of breeding birds; in fact it has had the largest colony of

East Sussex council became the sole contractor. These days the eastern end of the reservoir is given over to sporting activities, sailing, canoeing and fishing in the spring/summer months. In 1988 the western end was classified as a Local Nature Reserve [LNR] which extended in 1994 to the whole of the reservoir; this LNR is managed by a committee of interested bodies including English Nature - two local nature observers joined this group as they had been recording

Great Crested Grebes in Sussex. In 1966, this extensive birdlife led to the reservoir being given the status of an area of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI].

In those days the two Sussex counties employed ecologists who recognised a potential nature reserve site and contracted with the water company to maintain the wildlife of the area. Countryside rangers were employed, assisted by trainee rangers in a scheme to prepare them for a career in wildlife management - in 1974

sightings of the wildlife. The western part of the reservoir is shallower and in dry periods extensive mud banks are exposed which attract water birds and waders. Summer drought can lead to a small meandering stream representing the original course of the River Medway. These muddy fringes become a blaze of colour with extensive swathes of Purple Loosestrife. In 2005 and 2011 when severe drought struck the old road actually became visible crossing the central area.

The reserve extends beyond Whillet’s Bridge [Grinstead Lane] where grassland is crossed by streams feeding the river and liable to continuous flooding. In the mid 1990’s some of the observers started assisting the ranger in maintaining the reserve which led in 1996 to the formation of the Friends of Weirwood Society. Increasing volunteer numbers enabled more extensive work in the reserve. Then in 2013 council cutbacks and financial stringency at Southern Water (the reservoir owners) resulted in maintenance of the reserve being fully taken

over by the Friends of Weirwood Society members, assisted only by a ranger who carries out machine work. Over time the friends have built up their natural history knowledge and expertise in habitat management, however they always welcome new members especially those with specialist knowledge. The best observation point is at the Hide Car Park. The land is private but the friends arrange a public open day in July and a Members’ Day in May when visitors can enter areas of the reserve.

Forthcoming event: Friday 8 April 2016 at 8pm. Friends of Weirwood Nature Reserve Society: An illustrated talk about Broadstone Stream, Forest Row. Guy Woodward and Alan Hildrew from University of London. Probably the world’s longest running, 40 years, continuing detailed study of a stream. A fascinating insight into the effect of environmental changes on the invertebrates and on food chains in this Ashdown Forest stream. Specialist biological knowledge not necessary. Entrance fee - a donation. At the Community Centre, Hartfield Road, Forest Row, RH18 5DZ. See www.weirwood.me.uk for details of how to join, sightings and a fantastic photo gallery.
