Flat roof repairs

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.”

The McIndoe Statue “The most important thing is he got East Grinstead to accept them, which they did.” And one of Sir Archibald’s patients, Des O’Connell, said: “We had the feeling right from the very beginning that he would mend us.” The idea to bring this memorial to our town was initiated by Stuart Scholes of the EG Business Association and subsequently supported by the Blond McIndoe Foundation and the town council.

Last month saw the unveiling of the maquette (a small scale model, see front cover) of McIndoe’s Statue that will soon become a gem in East Grinstead’s crown. Martin Jennings, the Sculptor, explains his thoughts behind the vision: ‘I want to make more than just a statue of the great surgeon. McIndoe’s story is inseparable from that of the Guinea Pig Club, his burned ‘boys’ for whom he was a cross between compassionate parent and strict figure of authority. So I have represented him with a patient (though not a particular person) who has burns to his face and hands but still wears his RAF uniform, as McIndoe insisted his patients should be allowed to. The pilot is turning his head to look back up to the sky in which he can no longer fly but also towards his doctor for reassurance. McIndoe’s hands are on the younger man’s shoulders, suggesting the communication of his extraordinary confidence - his patients always refer in their memories of him to his absolute certainty that they would go on to lead productive lives despite the traumas they’d suffered. Many of McIndoe’s patients suffered terrible injuries to their hands

and “main en griffe” (claw hands) frequently resulted. After his wartime burns, my own father’s hands were fixed in a claw shape for the remainder of his adult life. I can remember when growing up how tentatively he sometimes used to hold them and how he used to stretch them when they ached. This is something I want to record in that one small part of the statue.

The unveiling of the maquette also marked a fundraising drive to raise £140,000 to make statue. Supporters can donate at www. mcindoememorial.com or at www. justgiving.com/McIndoeMemorial

McIndoe encouraged the people of East Grinstead to involve themselves with the social rehabilitation of his patients. I’m proposing that the statue should have a continuous crescent of stone seating encircling it, so that when the people of the town sit down around it they will be helping symbolically to complete it. It seems to me to be important that this monument should be seen not just as a tribute to a great man but to his heroic patients as well and to the community that did so much to support them’. At the unveiling Sir Archibald’s daughter, Adonia Montford Bebb, said: “He got beer into the wards, he got pretty girls to look after them and he got people to entertain them.

London 2 Brighton Challenge

Local resident Chris Parfitt participates in aid of Cancer Research UK.

J W Carpenter

What inspired you to take up this particular challenge? Many of us have lost family or friends to cancer or certainly know of someone that has been affected by cancer, one of my most difficult memories is from my days as a trainee submariner over 30 years ago, a friend & fellow trainee submariner, “Dollyâ€? Grey, we were serving on our 1st submarine HMS Olympus, he began complaining of pains & constipation, the medical staff unfortunately didn’t spot the early warning signs & 3 months later he died from the complications arising from bowel cancer, he was 21. I was a 20 year young man at the time & it was quite a shock to lose a friend that way, he was so young‌ How does this one compare with other challenges you’ve undertaken in the past? I successfully completed a 100 km walk in 24 hours last year but as part of a 4 person team & raised over ÂŁ4000 for Blind Veterans UK. This year I will be attempting to complete the 100 km but I will be entering the event as a sole participant. I couldn’t persuade my previous team mates to enter as they are only just getting over memories & injuries sustained at last years event - lost toenails that have only just fully grown back! I have already proven I can complete the challenge so to “up the stakesâ€? I have set myself a goal of completing the 100 km in around 20 hours‌!

What was the reaction of your family & friends? My family and friends have been wonderful in supporting me in my latest challenge, they have sponsored me generously in donating to this very worthwhile cause. My wife Karen has been very understanding while I yomp off on 20 or 30 mile training walks at the weekend, even meeting me at my destinations with refreshments & to pick me to take me home.

Black Peters Bar & Restaurant at the B R A M B L E T Y E H OT E L • F O R E S T ROW

The scandal of the missing Pie In search of the lost Top Notch Quality Pie the determined couple bound the train to the quaint village of Forest Row. “I do not doubt, my famished friend, that we may well encounter that deep filled butter pastry encased Pie for which we have long searched” the detective comforted his august companion with no fear of conjecture. On their arrival in that village they hastened to the Brambletye Hotel and enquired within on the availability of “Pie”. A most charming Lady led them to a table in the Black Peter Restaurant. Tel: 01342

824144

Offering a welcoming ale, she then spoke most candidly to that which they alluded. It appeared that the chef (himself a lover of pie) had gathered fresh local meats & produce and taken it upon himself to rectify this lack of “Proper Pie”. Menus were handed to the pair. Skimming through the delights on offer until their glances fell on the selection of pies. Traditional Fish, Steak & Guinness, Cottage Pie and Pie of the week! The silent despair, once so obvious, was now just a distant memory. “My dear friend,” our rapturous sleuth declared, “I doubt that even our much respected cook herself could better this!” Content in the knowledge that he had found his perfect pie, yet fearful that common knowledge would result in a pie stampede, our sated Sire considered his dilemma...

mums the Word... Anyone for Mud Pies? Choose a specific part of the garden, give the kids a little trowel/fork (or do this part yourself ) and loosen mud.Provide a watering can, sprayer, bottle or container of water. Let the children gather up leaves, twigs, etc. around the garden to make the ultimate Mud Pie (or Mud Castle). You could give them a little container for their ‘lake’ and possibly also some sticks with material to make a ‘flag’ to place in the pies/castle.

A Mothers Quote of the month:

Hungry for Hulk Juice? “It’s as if, in the mother’s eyes, her smile, her stroking touch, the child first reads the message: ‘You are there!’” Adrienne Rich

Would like an alternative to bleach spray/strong chemical spray? Try this: take an empty spray bottle, add just a drop of washing up liquid, a couple of drops of Tea Tree oil (natural disinfectant), and a couple of teaspoonful of lemon juice (natural cleanser). fill bottle with water - of course! And try it out. You could use lime instead if you prefer... 10 | May 2013 • Please mention East Grinstead Living when responding to adverts

My sister came up with this, it’s especially good for fans of incredible Hulk (boys)... And is sure to get lots of greens down without the kids cottoning on. You need a juicer for this. Juice 4 apples (pineapple if you have some) and lots of green veg e.g. an inch or 2 of cucumber, couple of handfuls of spinach (I find soaking for a few seconds in warm water helps get the spinach ‘juice’ out), 1/4 green pepper, half stick of celery even an inch of 2 of courgette (uncooked of course). You can then go so far as to blend (in a blender...) the resulting juice with a 1/4 or 1/2 avocado, a few cubes of ice and (this if for the really health conscious among us...) a little wheat grass too if you wish. I’m assured that the avocado doesn’t taste “avocado’y” but turns the juice into more of a smoothie without the need of a banana - which is not as high as the avocado in the ‘healthy’ steaks.

Slow cooked lamb, leek & lentil bake Serves: 4 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 1 hr 25 mins It takes about 20 minutes to put this casserole together, then you can enjoy the mouthwatering aromas as it slowly cooks.

What to do: Ingredients:

This recipe has been taken from the Change4Life website

w A F he ss R n e E EG you ssm E Liv m ent in ent g io n

1 tsp vegetable oil 350g lamb neck fillet trimmed and sliced 1 large onion sliced 1 leek sliced 2 carrots sliced 100g dried red lentils 50g frozen peas 750ml reduced salt vegetable or chicken stock 2 tsp tomato puree 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground paprika 1 pinch ground black pepper 400g potatoes peeled and thinly sliced

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, gas mark 4. 2. Heat a large flameproof casserole dish on the hob and add the vegetable oil. Add the lamb chunks, letting them sear and brown before turning them over. Cook for 3-4 minutes until browned on all sides. 3. Add the onion, leek, carrots, lentils, peas, stock, tomato puree, cumin and paprika. Season with some pepper and stir well. Bring up to the boil, then remove from the heat. 4. Arrange the sliced potatoes in an overlapping layer to cover the surface of the lamb mixture. Cover and bake for 1 ¼ hours, removing the lid for the final 30 minutes to brown the potatoes. Tip 1: Dried red lentils don’t have to be pre-cooked as they soon become tender. Tip 2: The cumin and paprika add extra flavour and spiciness, though you could leave them out if you prefer.

Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the

Borde Hill Garden Visionary

This year, the award-winning Borde Hill Garden celebrates one and half centuries of gardening history. The vision of one man Colonel Stephenson R Clarke (1862-1948) and his love affair with nature led to the establishment of one of the most beautiful gardens in Britain. Today plant enthusiasts can visit Borde Hill and still experience the passion and knowledge which led Stephen R Clarke and the Great Victorian Plant Hunters to collect flora and fauna from every corner of the globe. History of Borde Hill House The House was originally built in 1598 by Stephen Borde who was the grandson of Andrew Borde, one of Henry VIII’s courtiers. He was a great land owner of the times with 29 other manor houses to his name and property in 69 parishes. As a leading physician of his day, the rather modest inception of the now famous Borde Hill Garden was as a home to medicinal species. In the main drawing room of the West Wing of the house is preserved a truly magnificent Elizabethan decorative plaster ceiling, complete with royal fleur de lys among other treasures from the period. Moving forward to 1720, having changed family ownership, Borde Hill House was extended considerably, still later with ensuing owners in 1840 and the 1890’s. Each extension was added with meticulous consideration so as the original character of the house remained unspoilt. The Stephenson Clarke family purchased the house in 1892 and built the East Wing, altered and restored the central southern bay windows & added the present porch to the north front door, the family’s fourth generation still resides there today (visitors are able to explore the history and splendour of the house by group pre-booking between May and June).

The Col. Stephenson Clarke commenced on a process of extending the acreage from only 8 acres to, 21,000 acres across 50 years! Creating in that time both the formal gardens and planting extensively in selected woodlands around the estate where varying microclimates were especially suitable for more tropical flora and fauna. The Col, being a great naturalist, gave equally important roles to botanical interest and garden design. Planting of the garden began in 1893 and then in 1898 he extended the South Lawn and created the Ha-Ha. Many expeditions were sponsored by the great plant collectors to China, Burma, Tasmania and the Andes. From these, numerous plants were gathered and placed in the best suited areas of the grounds at Borde Hill. Still today, collections of magnolias, camellias, and many unusual trees can be enjoyed. Some of these have grown to ‘champion’ size and Borde Hill contains 82; about 8,000 trees and shrubs are listed in the Tree Registry. Evolution of the Garden Borde Hill Garden was planted in a series of intimate outdoor ‘rooms’ which include the Azalea Ring (1912), Garden of Allah (1922) and sub-tropical Dells. Later were added Jay Robin’s Rose Garden, the Mediterranean and Italian Gardens. The Rose Garden, created in 1996, was planted with over 600 scented David Austin roses! Borde Hill Garden has received numerous awards. To celebrate this sesquicentennial anniversary, Head Gardener Andy Stevens will re-introduce a number of the original varieties established by the Col which have since been lost to harsh weather. What’s more, a unique exhibition of his life and explorations will be open to visitors throughout the year.

How do I know if I have a frozen shoulder? A frozen shoulder is also known as adhesive capsulitis, which as it infers, a sticky shoulder that doesn’t want to move. It is often caused for no reason or can coincide with stressful periods in your life. It is painful and slowly gets worse, causing pain and greatly restricting the movement and use of your arm. When you have a frozen shoulder, simple movements such as doing your bra up, reaching for the wallet in your back pocket or simply combing your hair. The diagnosis is usually made by watching the range of movements you struggle with. Here are a few simple guides to see what you can or cannot do: Raise both arms parallel then above your head, the frozen shoulder arm will cause pain and the shoulder blade will raise with your shoulder up towards your ear, in order to help the arm. Try lifting your arm up sideways and compare with the other arm. Finally, stand with both arms at your side and keep hour elbows bent to 90 degrees. While keeping your elbows tucked into your sides, try and move your lower arms out. This can equal: Pain, lack of sleep and restriction. If you think you may have a frozen shoulder then give Tracy Wilkinson a call on 07787 981614 and she can help. (also see advert on the right).

The High Weald Forest Ridge East Grinstead is historically known as the Capital of the High Weald. In modern times we may have somewhat lost touch with what this means though most of us do appreciate the unique landscape in which we live. Here is some more information about the special landscape of the High Weald, specifically the northen part named the High Weald Forest Ridge which we, in East Grinstead, border:

©James Cope; Field Kitchen

“The Weald Forest Ridge, historically part of the Weald, has a scenic quality of its own. The high country, much of it between 400 and 600 feet above sea level, runs almost unbroken from the county boundary near Tunbridge Wells to Horsham, and includes the breezy, treeless heights of Ashdown Forest and the forests of Worth and St Leonard’s. It is famous for its far-ranging views South to the Downs and for its magnificent gardens like Wakehurst, Nymans and Leonardslee.” Crouch, M, (1969) The Heritage of Sussex, Macdonald Stunning Sandstone Hidden away in the High Weald Forest Ridge is one of its most iconic features – Sandstone outcrops. It all started around 140 million years ago (when dinosaurs still roamed) when sediments formed at the bottom of shallow lakes, or were carried by rivers and deposited on floodplains. Then around 100 million years ago, sea levels rose and the remains of billions of tiny sea creatures formed another layer of sediment above the sands and muds. Over time, this layer became chalk. Later, around 30 million years ago, massive earth movements began to push all the compacted layers of sediment up, creating a giant, chalkcovered dome.

Toad Rock

Over time, water eroded most of the chalk away, revealing the older sandstones and clays beneath - the High and Low Weald. The chalk at the edges of the dome has remained - forming the North and South Downs. In fact the countryside gets its ridges, valleys and rolling landscape from these underlying bands of sandstone plus clay: The harder sandstone forms the high land and ridges, which generally run east-west across the High Weald; and the lower land between the sandstone ridges is the result of the softer clays having been more easily eroded. This has left the steeply ridged and folded countryside that survives today. The resulting formations are now inland sandstone cliffs up to 15m high. A great example of which is Stone Hill Rocks near Weirwood Reservoir.

In addition, fast-flowing streams have carved out characteristic, steep-sided ravines called gills in the steep sides of the sandstone ridges. These porous, moisture-holding sandrock and sheltered, damp gills provide ideal living conditions for ferns, mosses, liverworts and lichens. Many of these species are more characteristic of the mild and humid oceanic climate of Wales and Cornwall than that of the South East. Most famous is the tiny, and extremely rare, Tunbridge Filmy-fern. The High Weald’s sandrock cliffs have attracted humans for thousands of years: for varying reasons. Early hunter-gatherers venturing into the High Weald’s dense wilderness used them for shelter. Later, the rock was dug for building and road stone – creating even more exposures in the abandoned quarries. The Victorians admired the cliffs as marvels of creation: often holding elaborate tea parties in

elegant dress beneath the outcrops. Individual rocks were named after objects they resembled;“The famous Toad Rock is to Tunbridge Wells what the Leaning Tower is to Pisa” said the writer E.V. Lucas in 1904.

Minepits Past

Nowadays, rock climbers flock to the outcrops; the next nearest climbable cliffs are in Dorset or Derbyshire! But it’s not only humans that appreciate the stunning sandstone. It is home to many rare mosses and other small plants found nowhere else in the south-east.

Gardening in May Article by Michael Dongray,

Imberhorne Lane Nursery Proprietor

Bulbs

Shrubs

In late May, after the soil temperature has warmed, plant summer flowering bulbs such as Gladioli.

Early flowering shrubs such Azaleas and Rhododendron should be pruned after blooming and can be fertilised at the same time.

Dahlia tubers can also be planted now. Remove dead flower heads from Daffodils, Hyacinths and Tulips.

It is still an ideal time to plant shrubs. Dull showery weather is most suitable, so long as the soil is not “sticky”. Farmyard manure or Soil Improver Compost can be added to improve the soil. Any acid loving plant requires ericaceous compost.

Fruit Remove surplus raspberry shoots, leaving only the strongest and give plants a good mulch. Spray tree and soft fruit against pest and diseases. Be careful not to spray on open blooms, as pollinating insects may be present.

Greenhouse More ventilation will be needed on hot sunny days and shading may need to be installed. More frequent watering will be necessary. Tomatoes making new growth need to be securely supported, any side shoots appearing need to be removed as soon as they appear except bush varieties.

Lawns Grass should now be cut at least once a week. Feeding the Lawn will be beneficial. If weeds are present then use a combined weed and feed. Seeding bare patches can also be carried out.

Roses Fertilise and spray roses for pest and disease. A continuous rose maintenance programme throughout the summer will ensure a beautiful display all season long. There are some very good organic sprays now available. Spraying is best carried out in the evenings.

Pot grown shrubs are most ideal for planting, as the roots do not get damaged. It is better to plant as soon as possible to enable the new roots to have as much time as possible to establish themselves before the end of the growing season. After planting, water the shrubs and then mulch with chipped bark or similar. If there is a dry spell after planting is may be necessary to water. Faded flowers need removing from Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias. The plants may now be cut back as far as the old wood (do not cut into old wood) and then fed with an ericaceous feed. Forsythia and other spring flowering shrubs need to be given a hard pruning straight after flowering. Hollies, Laurels, Bays, Rhododendrons and Conifers can be moved or trimmed.

Vegetables Main crop potatoes not yet planted must be put in as soon as possible. Early potatoes may be “earthed up”. Continue to make sowings of Lettuce, Radish, Beet, Carrots. Runner and French Beans may be sown, along with Spinach, Swede and later in the month, Sweetcorn. Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage and Celery plants may be planted out when they have been “hardened off”.

How do the East Grinstead Ladies do it?

The East Grinstead Ladies Hockey Team set their targets five seasons ago: Promotion to the national league in five years both Indoor and outdoor. This was met with a certain amount of ridicule yet quite amazingly they hit their targets! The team started in Sussex Premier Division (Outdoor) which they had been in forever; they were then promoted to South League Division 3, then division 2, then division 1. The ladies have just won division 1, thus advancing into the National league. It has always been a real fight, with the last three promotions having all coming down to the last game! The former Captain Vicky Griffiths (prior the last game of the season) explained to the squad at the time: “For those of you who have not been around for the last five years, EG ladies were still playing in the Sussex county league as recently as 2010. Yes, the Sussex county league. It was in 2009 that the then ladies committee put together a master plan which mapped out a route into the national league within 5 years. This plan was incredibly ambitious. And, to be honest, was laughed at by some club members

chatting around the bar. It was greeted with ‘good luck with that’ and ‘we’re right behind you’ comments. Luckily, enough people really did get behind us, ranging from players to coaches to sponsors to managers to supporters to parents to the press. And, over the years, the EG ladies’ snow ball has steadily gathered speed, interest and support. And here we are, 70 minutes away from the national league, in 2013.” The squad itself is a mixture of youth and experience which has served the team well in its meterioric rise. The club as a whole has worked very hard over the last few years on player development which is now paying off as they have a thriving junior section. The bulk of the team is local but there are a few experienced players from outside the region. The goal next season is to initially aim for a top four finish and later take a big step up, going one higher to the Premier League. The support along the way has been prolific as evidenced by those coming ‘en masse’ for the final game of the season.

Local History Notes

Dorabella & the Composer Edward Elgar Edward Elgar is perhaps best known for composing music for “Land of Hope and Glory” which of course is a leader of Britain’s patriotic anthems. So where is the connection to East Grinstead? Well as it happens the tenth variation of Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” (Elgar’s best-known large-scale composition) is dedicated to former East Grinstead resident “Dorabella”. “Dorabella” was Dora Mary Penny, the daughter of the Rev. Alfred Penny and his wife, also named Dora Mary. Born in Swindon on February 8th, 1874, she was brought up by her maternal grandmother, as her mother died when she was 6 days old. Her father went to the Solomon Islands as a missionary and returned in 1895 when he was appointed as Rector of Wolverhampton. Dora thus moved to Wolverhampton to live with him. Soon afterwards her father remarried, his new wife, Mary Baker, was the sister of William Meath Baker, who was amiable with several of Elgar’s friends who were themselves later featured in the fourteen Enigma Variations. The close relationship that Dora’s stepmother had with Elgar’s circle led to Elgar’s close friendship with Dora herself. They often went on walks and flew kites together; one of Elgar’s passions. She went on to be a help to him in many

ways and thus he included her in his Variations at number X. interestingly her stutter is interpreted by the woodwind section of the orchestra. The ‘Enigma’ is not the identity of the persons portrayed, as those are known, easily identified by their initials. The mystery is what is the hidden theme that is, in Elgar’s words, “not played”. A letter to Dora, written in July 1897, is in code. In it Elgar is said to have revealed the secret. No one was been able to crack the code for many years. The ‘Dorabella Cipher’ was the subject of a competition in 2007, the 150th anniversary

of Elgar’s birth, but sadly there was no success. A solution was eventually discovered but did not reveal the secret which Elgar took to his grave. The Elgars moved to Hampstead in 1912 and the almost daily contact they had had with Dora and her step-mother, was lost. Dora was married in January 1914 to Richard Crofts Powell. He was the son of the Rev. Clement Powell, the Rector of Newick. After the newly married couple’s move to Oak Croft in Moat Road, East Grinstead two years later,

she appears by this time to have lost touch with Elgar completely. Dora’s interest in music carried on, however. She had sung with the Wolverhampton Choral Society while living there and went on to study at the Royal College of Music under Sir Henry Wood. Six years after moving to East Grinstead Dora became one of the founding members of the East Grinstead Operatic Society – still extant today. Their first production was Gilbert and Sullivan’s “HMS Pinafore”. She was the musical director and conducted the twenty-three strong orchestra at the performances. In addition to the Operatic Society Dora co-founded the Music Club and ran a choir. Always immaculately dressed she was a familiar sight around the town, often being driven around by her husband in his open-top Bentley car. He was a distant relation to Lord Baden-Powell (founder of the Scouts movement) and renamed their home “Poel’s” to reflect the correct pronunciation of his surname! The modern block of flats which now occupies the site is called “Poel’s Court”. Their house

had originally been built in 1873 and was one of the first houses to be built on Moat Road. Dora Powell’s interests were wider than just music. A keen member of the East Grinstead Lawn Tennis Club she organised tournaments on the Ship Street courts for many years. These attracted several well known players in the run-up to Wimbledon. The Powells continued with their pleasant life in East Grinstead for the next four decades. When Richard died in January 1962 Dora

moved out of “Poel’s” and went into St. Agnes Nursing Home, Garland Road. In increasingly poor health, Dora only survived her husband by just over two years. She died in the nursing home on May 27th 1964. Her funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Church in Windmill Lane. Dora’s death severed all living connections of the fourteen friends who gave their names and personalities to the Enigma Variations, to one of our best loved English composers, Edward Elgar. by Dorothy Hatswell

Come be merry and dance and sing, Greet the newborn birds of Spring, Apple blossoms, pink and white, are bursting into flower, Hawthorne bright and gorse of gold, enriching Nature’s bower. All the hills and dales and woodland Hug the warmth of the golden sunshine, Forgetting all their cold and wintry pains, They are blessed with sweet and gently falling rains. Across distant fields the cuckoo, The flying messenger of song proclaiming Spring, By his call invites us all to Let our hearts and all our hopes and joys take wing. ‘Neath a rainbow’s brilliant sheen Rabbits play in meadows green. Woody woody pecker, he goes rata tata tat, Baby fieldmice, first time out, run pita pita pat. Anenome and primrose mingle, Bluebells in every dell and dingle. Little lambs look up and sniff the air.
