Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

A New Kindergarten at Hoathly Hill! Hoathly Hill Trust is proud to announce a new kindergarten at Hoathly Hill! Four Seasons Kindergarten will open in September 2014 and provides a beautiful setting and high quality care for children aged 3 to 6. The new kindergarten is located at Hoathly Hill, a rural community situated between Sharpthorne and West Hoathly, near Forest Row and East Grinstead. The children will have the benefit of a purpose-built building and a stunning, natural environment.

Our kindergarten teacher is highly qualified and experienced. There is a focus on the Steiner Waldorf curriculum emphasising play as the ‘work’ of childhood. The children experience a rhythm for each day and throughout the year. Their activities include singing, painting, baking, crafts and storytelling. The children spend a lot of time outside walking, playing and gardening. Four Seasons Kindergarten is run as a project of Hoathly Hill Trust, a charitable company supporting community and environmental educational projects. There will be a management committee composed of trustees, parents, the kindergarten teacher/manager and staff and a commitment to ongoing investment in staff and facilities.

Four Seasons Kindergarten will provide early years care for one group of children. Please register your interest early as spaces will fill up quickly. We welcome you to our Open Morning on Saturday May 3 at 10am. Get in touch to find out more!

Mum, I Love You!

May Day Flower Cone May Day is a great time for crafts in the home. The holiday falls on the first day of May and is a celebration of the reappearance of flowers in the Spring. Here’s one crafty suggestion for the bank holiday: Materials: Decorated paper, Glue, Hole punch, Ribbon, Paper towel, Plastic bag, Fresh flowers Instructions: Roll a piece of decorated paper into a cone shape, and glue the edges together to seal. When the glue has dried, punch two holes on opposite sides of the cone. Tie the ends of a piece of ribbon through each of the holes to make a handle. Gather some fresh

flowers. Put a wet tissue paper or kitchen roll paper around the flower stems and cover the towel with a small plastic bag or sandwich bag. Tie ribbon (or elastic band, string, etc.) around the plastic bag to seal it, and set the flowers inside the decorative cone. Suggestion: hang the cone on a family member’s bedroom doorknob or on the front door of a neighbour or good friend as a Springtime greeting.

CS Craven

A Man Before His Time

A

n important football pioneer, Charles Samuel Craven, who spent his latter years living in Felbridge, was recently remembered at a thanksgiving service and wreath laying in March at St John’s churchyard. Here is some of his history explaining his impact on Football in the North East: Charles Samuel Craven was the visionary behind the formation of the Northern League, the world’s second oldest, in 1889. Six years later, when just 19, he had helped form Darlington FC. Anticipating its 125th anniversary, the Northern League determined to discover more about its founder – no longer quite a needle-ina-haystack job thanks to the wonders of the Internet. An amateur genealogist in Co Durham tracked Craven’s grave to Felbridge. After a visit last September by Northern League chairman Mike Amos, the

genealogical gauntlet was picked up by local resident John Sisley who determined to find out more. After months of meticulous research, John discovered that Craven – who married again after his first wife’s death – had granddaughters in Berkshire and in Somerset. They, in turn, led the league to Bob Rogers, a grandson in Hong Kong. Bob flew to England for five days of Northern League celebration. He was joined in Felbridge by his sister, Liz Husbands, and by her husband and daughter.

horticultural society. The service was attended by senior officials from the Football Association, Surrey FA and the Northern League and by several villagers.

The 15-minute service, just four days from the exact anniversary of the Northern League’s formation, was led by league chaplain the Rev Canon Leo Osborn, chair of the Newcastle upon Tyne Methodist district.

“The Felbridge community has been wonderfully hospitable and John and Mary Sisley magnificent,,” said Mike Amos. “We wanted Charles Craven not just to be acknowledged in the North-East but remembered in the village where he lies.”

Mike Amos laid a wreath on a grave that had been tidied and beautified by Mary Sisley and colleagues from the Felbridge

Bob Rogers and his family had known nothing of their grandfather’s sporting connections. After a later career in the Colonial Service, principally as water works engineer on the Gold Coat, he retired to the Isle of Wight and, in 1927, moved to Kingates, Felbridge, because of better educational opportunities for his daughter. Craven had been a church council treasurer on the Isle of Wight, and bought communion wafers from a convent in East Grinstead where the sisters also ran a school. It was to the convent school that his daughter was sent. His grandson, Bob Rogers, said that the Felbridge service had been greatly moving. “It was

amazing to be able to do this for my grandfather. Everyone made us very welcome. I hope he will continue to be acknowledged in some way.” Looking back to where it all started, the founder of the Northern Football League was a man ahead of his time. Innovator, administrator, visionary and trail blazer, CS Craven would probably have found it appropriate that almost everything we know about him today is down directly or indirectly to the internet. What would the Victories have made of it all? How different a world was it in 1883 when a public meeting was called to form a football club in Darlington and C S Craven, just 19 years old, was appointed the first secretary - “pro tem”?

feared another war, partly because of ill health. In later life he seldom left Kingates. When he died in 1940, aged 77, the house was taken over by the Army and Ella moved to Oxfordshire. The Northern League, which owes him so much, has formally applied for his induction into the Football Hall of Fame. We are much indebted to Judith Turner in Co Durham and John Sisley in Felbridge for their wonderful work in tracing the CS Craven story and to his family - in particular Liz Husbands and Bob Rogers - for their enormous help. Mike Amos MBE Chairman, EBAC Northern League

When he left Darlington in April 1890, the month that he married Mary Elizabeth Gillingham, an illuminated scroll spoke of his “long and able service”, of how Darlington’s gates had increased from a shilling to £120, and both facilities and football greatly improved. There was a “purse of gold” too. None doubts that he was also the force behind the Northern League, the world’s second oldest. The inaugural meeting was held on March 25th 1889, the first matches played on September 7th. Even when he moved to Leeds the following year, to become secretary of the cricket and rugby and the man chiefly responsible for the development of Headingley, he continued as Northern League secretary. In North-East England, folk just called it The Craven League.

He was born at Staveley, in Derbyshire, and moved to Darlington at 16 to be apprenticed to his uncle Robert Pease - a member of the great Quaker family responsible for Darlington’s development and prosperity - also played tennis and cricket and must have been a singer, for it was through the music society that he met Mary Gillingham. After Headingley, he took up similar work in Maidstone before joining the Colonial Office in 1896. He was given responsibility for building the water works on the Gold Coast. Mary died while he was there, in 1910. Craven retired in 1915, returned to London in 1917 and married Ella Goody, whom he had met at a dinner party. On November 18th 1918, seven days after the end of war, their daughter Margaret was born. Her father wanted to call her Armisticia; other counsel prevailed. While living in Felbridge during the 1930s CS Craven became increasingly anxious, partly because he

Can be an inexpensive stain remover. Just pour a can on the soiled areas, and let it soak for a while, wash as normal. It can help deodorize the clothing. Remove rust To remove rust from objects, soak overnight, then scrub in the morning. The Coke helps break up the rust, making it easier to remove with a little elbow grease. Relief from stings and bites Can help ease the pain of different types of stings. Try pouring Coca-Cola on bee stings & mosquito bites. Ease stomach ailments Provides temporary relief for stomach ailments such as indigestion and heartburn. Drinking it flat can be helpful with both nausea and diarrhea. Toilet cleaner Pour a bottle of coke into the toilet bowl before cleaning to help ease up the dirt. Let it soak a bit, then clean as usual. Clean your windows Just be sure and clean off with a damp cloth to remove all the sugary substance so that it is not sticky. Gum in hair remover Totally soak the gum area in coke and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, slowly start removing the gum. It still could be a long process, but it can better than having to cut off your hair.

Buffing As the summer approaches it would be wise to turn our attention to buffing and polishing!!! This is not advocating slaving away spring cleaning the house but rather exfoliating and nourishing our skin!

&

When we are younger the skins renewal process takes about 28 days however this increases as we mature causing skin to appear sallow and lack lustre. By exfoliating we can reveal new fresh glowing skin beneath. By dry brushing or using a loofah mitt in the shower then moisturising we can promote supple radiant clear skin. Using a gentle microfine scrub for the face acts by sloughing off the build-up of dead skin cells that are stuck together with the skins natural body oils resulting in less noticeable fine lines!

Polishing!

a “scrub and rub” away preventing minor skin imperfections creating the buffed and polished look of a healthy fashion accessory All year round, but especially at this time of year as we begin to reveal more skin exfoliating and nourishing is extremely beneficial as it helps in many other ways as well: By providing the best surface for fake tanning, preventing ingrown hairs to get the most from our waxing treatments and revealing smooth skin on our hands and feet to best show off our mani/pedi. Our faces radiate keeping breakouts at bay, minimising blocked pores and promoting fresh new skin with a healthy glow. In only a extra few minutes a day a scrub and rub routine can bring major benefits that your skin will thank you for in the short and long term.

Nourishing with an appropriate moisturiser after exfoliation allows it to be more easily absorbed and more able to maintain the balance of your skin to prevent excess moisture loss and dehydration.

Fruity banana bran cake

Serves: 12 adults Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 55 mins

This fruity cake is so easy to make, so don’t worry if you haven’t done much baking before. It doesn’t use any added fat at all and it’s high in fruit and fibre, making it a healthier choice.

What to do: 1. Put the bran flakes into a mixing bowl and add the milk, apricots and sultanas. Stir well. Cover and leave to soak in a cool place for 1 hour, stirring from time to time. 2. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, gas mark 4. Line a 900g (2lb) loaf tin with greaseproof paper. 3. Add the sugar, flour, beaten eggs and mashed banana to the soaked mixture and stir thoroughly. Spoon this mixture into the prepared tin.

Ingredients: 100g low sugar bran flakes 250ml milk 75g ready-to-eat apricots chopped 50g sultanas 40g light muscovado or soft brown sugar 150g self-raising flour 2 eggs beaten 1 banana mashed

4. Transfer to the middle shelf of the oven and bake for 50-55 minutes. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out carefully and cool on a wire rack. Tip 1: You could ring the changes by using dried cherries or dried blueberries instead of apricots, and replacing the sultanas with raisins. Tip 2: Keep the cake in an airtight tin and use within 1 week. If you like, freeze individual slices in small freezer bags, ready to take for a packed lunch - they will have defrosted by midday.

It’s about time. At NFU Mutual we believe in taking the time to get to know our customers face to face. That’s why, when you visit our branch at Hayward’s Heath, the first question we might ask you is “would you like a cup of tea?” NFU Mutual was founded in a teashop in StratfordUpon-Avon over a century ago and, during that time we have grown and diversified to provide insurance, investments and pensions for people who have their home (or their heart) in the countryside. As an insurer who understands the risks and rewards of living in the countryside, we realise that your home is more than simply bricks and mortar: it’s where you raise your family, entertain your friends and keep some of your most treasured possessions. That’s why we take the time to work closely with you to tailor your home and contents cover to your individual needs, so that your home and possessions are properly protected against the unexpected. To help you protect the things you value, NFU Mutual has just launched a new insurance product package for those with high-value homes and contents over worth £100,000. Whether you have a contemporary home full of modern art or a listed manor house filled with antiques, we can help you correctly value and insure your home and its contents, together with any land or outbuildings attached to your home.

As the recent storms and floods highlighted, the true test of any insurance policy comes when you have to make a claim. Whilst relocating families is always a priority in situations like this, we also understand that domestic pets, horses and even fine art and antiques may also need to be moved to a place of safety in the event of a major fire, storm or flood. Water can ruin fine art and antiques and items of value might need to be removed from the premises and placed into secure storage until the property has been dried out and repaired. In some cases, this could take up to three years, particularly if the property is listed or requires complex repairs or restoration. In the event of a claim, our strong local presence means we can respond to your requests and instructions quickly. We also have a specialist claims team on-hand to help and support you through the claims process. At a time when many businesses are moving out of towns and villages, NFU Mutual is committed to maintaining a local presence and providing a traditional face-to-face service where our customers and their families are known by their name and not just their policy number.

Competition To celebrate the launch of our new policy for high value homes, and, in recognition of our longstanding affinity with tea, we’re giving away a Fortnum & Mason tea hamper containing two tins of loose-leaf tea, clotted cream thins, a Fortnum & Mason tea-strainer and a pretty china mug. To enter, all you have to do is email you name and address to info@egliving.co.uk and tell us the answer to the following question:

Gardening in May

An abundance of colour will delight us all this month as the rhododendrons and azaleas take centre stage with their glorious flowers. For all the months we curse the clay on which we garden, it does reward us now with its acid properties being the perfect home for these lime-hating plants.

A busy month in the garden, not just for the gardener and the plants but for the garden pests that start appearing to feast on the fruits of your labour – keep an eye on them and if needed use controls – preferably biological so as not to harm other wildlife.

GIfT VoUCHER

£5 off when you spend £20 or more on PLANTS. offer includes all plants in stock including Special offers. Coupon must be presented with your purchase. Coupon can be used only once on items stated. 1 coupon per customer per transacton.

Borders – Get the borders ready for the bedding plants, which I recommend planting out from the middle of May onwards. Keep weed growth under control. Apply a general fertiliser and gently fork it into the soil. Hedges – Now is the time to trim hedges and if you haven’t already done so establish the shape of the hedge. A good cut now will last the year. Shrubs and Trees and Roses – Forsythia and flowering currants have finished flowering so now is the time to prune them to give them the rest of the year to grow and flower next spring. Cut back to young sideshoots that haven’t flowered. Any plants that are climbers need tying in, any wayward shoots can be trimmed back so you establish the shape you want. Perennials – These will be growing well by now and some may well need supporting or staking – try to use supports that are half the eventual height of the plant so they will be well hidden when the plant is in flower. If you have dahlias and other tender plants these can be planted out after the middle of the month. You can prepare your hanging baskets and patio pots at this time as well. Fruit and Vegetables – Do a bit here everyday otherwise it will become too much, daily watering is essential for plants not to dry out. Any plants raised in the greenhouse can go out now. Regularly sow seed for a continuous crop. Buy small plants ready to plant out. Lawns – Now you will be mowing your lawn once a week. Newly laid turf will want to establish so ensure it is well watered and rooted before you start cutting it. Newly seeded areas are fragile so when use a pair of shears to take the tops off and encourage it to thicken out before the first mowing. A few jobs each day in the garden helps you to keep on top of what needs to be done and then of course gives you time to enjoy it…Happy Gardening. An Amazing Local Nature Reserve ‘Wildlife for All’ trust is perhaps West Hoathly’s best kept secret. With nature reserves both locally and in South Africa, they aim to have a different approach to protecting endangered species and threatened habitats. The Oasis and Oasis Woods is a 15-acre nature reserve and education centre on our own doorstep. There are three basic purposes: a local nature reserve, an education centre, and a practical training ground for team members. Established 32 years ago in the autumn of 1981, the idea for the Oasis came from the director, Iain Scott, whose original training was biology/ecology/ psychology. An amazing collection of colourful perennials provides the main focus: there is a dedicated hosta bed with over 70 varieties, a gravel garden, a “hot” bed full of the brightest colours, a daylily and geranium bed, and much more. There is a Japanese garden, rockeries, a rose garden, a “best for butterflies” bed, beautifully planted ponds, and more; standards are high. Captive-bred groups of meerkats (always a favourite) and bat-eared foxes in large naturalised enclosures link with the trust’s work in South Afrca. On open days one can see these animals close-up. Oasis Woods was later purchased in 1998. This beautiful section of ancient woodland provides a glimpse of what ancient forest looked like before most of it was cleared for agriculture and other human activities long ago. There are mass displays of

bluebells in May, leading downwards to a beautiful woodland stream inhabited by trout and visited by kingfishers. Woodpeckers and owls are heard daily. Since 1991, Wildlife For All has been working in co-operation with others to increase numbers of natterjack toads in the wild with a large breeding enclosure at The Oasis that produces thousands of tadpoles each year. These are then released at suitable nature reserves across southern England. The trust has worked in South Africa for over 20 years. Their biggest of two reserves is Komsberg Wilderness Nature Reserve which is huge at 30,700 acres in size or 17 miles across. It is situated within South Africa’s upland succulent karoo - widely recognised as one of the world’s 25 most important conservation hotspots for biodiversity. Many species have been re-introduced there, including the Burchell’s zebra, absent since 1811. The next target is to re-introduce cheetahs, this involves a lot of hard work further strengthening, then electrifying, many miles of perimeter fence. Anyone wishing to visit The Oasis in West Hoathly can email Becky at wildlifeforall@hotmail.com for an e-leaflet with details of their 2014 open days.

Home

Make your home beautiful without spending a fortune It had always been a dream and ambition of mine to own my own business with all the challenges and success that can come from hard work along with the satisfaction of creating a unique and bespoke product to order. I have a fascination and enthusiasm for fabrics and interiors, inspired by my grandmother who was an outstanding seamstress and handicrafter, and when an opportunity arose to change my career path I decided that this was a chance not to be missed. The prospect of being able to make a living doing something that I really enjoyed, whilst being challenging, was also very exciting. I pride myself on providing quality, handmade products, while also feeling that it is essential to ensure value for money, along with excellent customer service.

Testimonial I was very impressed with the high quality of sewing in the making of my roman blind. Nicky provided a friendly and very efficient service and I thoroughly recommend her to others. Ms C P, Hampshire.

Local History Notes

SARAH CROWHURST by Dorothy Hatswell

Sarah Crowhurst was born in 1876 to Henry and Eliza Weller who lived in the Old Tanyard Cottages in Ashurst Wood. She was one of several children and although she had wanted to be a school teacher, the family circumstances meant that she had to leave school at the age of ten. At the age of fifteen she left home to become the caretaker to an elderly, blind man who lived in Slab Castle Cottages in Ashurst Wood. This early example of her caring nature was to be echoed through the rest of her life. She married James Crowhurst in August 1899 and they had one day’s honeymoon as it was the Bank Holiday. James was the second child and eldest son of James and Mary Crowhurst who lived in Speldhurst Stone Cottages, Withyham. In the 1901 Census, James junior was a groom to Sarah and the family were living in Lower Glen Vue, soon to be renamed the more mundane, Railway Approach. By 1911, James junior (now a grocer’s carter) and Sarah had six children. The youngest was named William Bramwell Crowhurst, an indication of their commitment to the Salvation Army which was to influence the remainder of their lives. In total they had eight children of whom five were to emulate their parents, who both became officers in the Salvation Army. In 1905 General William Bramwell Booth (the first Chief of Staff and the second General of The Salvation Army) himself passed through East Grinstead on his way back to London from the continent. It must have caused great excitement in East Grinstead and in particular in the Crowhurst household. The Crowhursts were, by then, living in De La Warr Road in East Grinstead, they were to move, subsequently, round the corner to Chequer Road. That

was Sarah’s address when she wrote a poem called “The War” in September 1914, in which she pleaded for peace. The first verse reads: “Our Empire waging war, O God can this be true? Is peace on every hand By cruel sword pierced through?” Poetry had been Sarah’s way of expressing her thoughts and concerns throughout her life and she continued to write poems on a multitude of subjects until her death in Pembury Hospital in 1958. In spite of her large family, she was always ready to help others. As a neighbour, she often helped with the care of other peoples’ children. She was a member of the Labour Party and campaigned tirelessly for better conditions for the poorer members of society. At one time there were protests against the Labour Party holding meetings in the Parish Hall on a Sunday. Sarah wrote a letter to the local paper which started: “As I am one of those dreadful Labour Party members who have been holding meetings in the

Parish Hall on Sundays, I should be glad ...to say that...I absolutely deny that those meetings were of a purely secular character.... Some two thousand years ago, there lived a man although he was God, was also human. I have tried hard to live my life according to his example. In St. Mark’s Gospel he tells us that it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath Day. And my conscience in no way tells me that on those days when we met together to help each other to think out some of the great problems which are vital to the greatest gift God gives us, Life, we are doing other than God’s work” She stood for election to the Urban District Council and became the first woman to serve on it. Again her main aim was to better the lives of the working classes. She was the driving force behind the provision of social housing in the town. Sackville Gardens was the earliest estate in East Grinstead to provide decent homes for those who could not afford to buy their own. She was involved in the care of infants and young children. She worked at clinics in the town

which gave advice to mothers. When National Baby Week was held in 1929, being Sarah, she expressed some of this advice in a poem, “The Mother’s Welcome”, of over twenty verses, which ended “One parting shot I’ll fire at you E’re clocks say I am too late I should have a good bit of wisdom For I am a mother of eight.”

Peoples’ Bungalows, Holtye Road. Her funeral was attended by councillors and officials from the town and the wider district. Many of the ordinary people she had helped over her long and active life also turned out to mark their respect. She left a husband, eight children, twenty grandchildren

and six great grandchildren, most of whom had connections with the Salvation Army. These, together with the houses which were the first installment of many in the area, form her lasting legacy to the town where she lived and worked so tirelessly for so many years.

The Crowhursts were living in Dallaway Gardens when she wrote this. In 1948, when the Queen Victoria Hospital was subsumed into the National Health Service, and was no longer financed through public donations, she was presented with a barometer which is now in the East Grinstead museum by the East Grinstead Working Men’s Hospital Fund, to acknowlegde the support she had given over many years. A (Dande) Lion of Nature In this day and age there seems an insatiable appetite for all things exotic, much to the expense of shunning what is thought of as common. We always being fed (literally), by the media, a never ending list of “super foods” that somehow seem to be the next cure all. All the while, there is an abundance of “super foods” growing quite literally on our doorstep. So without much further ado, may I please re-introduce you to the lowly yet staggeringly beautiful - DANDELION. Insert applause. It is one of the earliest spring plants to emerge and the vivid, yellow flowers are almost like mini suns dotted around the English landscape. Hopefully as a good omen of the Summer to come. This innocuous little plant has long been both the scourge of the gardener and the mainstay of the herbalist. The plant is part of the Asteraceae family, the largest family of flowering plants in the British Isles after the grasses. The “flower” is in fact a capitulam made up of tiny florets. In other words it is not one flower but many tiny flowers grouped together. And it is these tiny florets that provide a vast supply of nectar to pollinating insects, in fact it is believed that up to 93 different insects visit these flowers, so you

can understand their importance within the fragile ecosystems they inhabit. the most important of these pollinating insect being the Honeybee. Dandelions provide a source of nectar in early spring, no matter the weather and have a steady succession of blooms well into the autumn after all the fruit tree blossoms have disappeared. I have never met a beekeeper that dislikes the Dandelion. The leaves and flower stem produce a white latex when picked, not unlike the latex produced by rubber trees. In Germany they developed a variety that produces far vaster quantities, they are currently testing a tyre for production that is part Dandelion rubber! Not such a lowly “weed” now is it? So how do I use this plant as a wild food or medicinal herb then I hear you ask? Well first lets look at the flavour of the plant. The leaves a very bitter, which in Oriental medicine has a tonifying effect on the kidneys and controlling water in the body. The leaves are

strongly diuretic, but very high in potassium. So unlike western diuretic medicines, which have to have potassium supplements prescribed at the same time, dandelion replenishes the potassium lost at the same time as flushing the body of excessive water. In Western herbalism it has been used to treat the liver and gallstones. The leaves make a great addition to salads, and are a staple for me when making fresh wild salads. No different in taste in fact from lettuce. Steamed with nettles they make a great accompany to poached eggs. The roots can be roasted and ground to make a caffeine-free coffee substitute. And on a last note who can forget as a child blowing the seeds off into the wind and making a wish. Magical. The EAST GRINSTEAD CONCERT BAND

East Grinstead is fortunate in being one of the few towns in the UK that can boast having a highly competent concert band: The East Grinstead Concert Band, founded in 1974 from the original town band. It attracts a diverse membership throughout the area and beyond of all ages and experience. They also play under the banner of the ‘Bluebell Railway Band’. Under their current Musical Director the band has gone from strength to strength. Stuart, a Londoner by birth, spent his early years in Uganda and Kenya. He obtained a Master of Music degree followed by a career as a concert soloist in oratorio and opera, singing baritone repertoire, as well as studying both piano and the clarinet. With many “strings to his bow” from interior design consultancy, web page designer to music teacher, he now has career as a successful published author. The band regularly perform at local charity events and have a proud tradition of fundraising; they recently played in Lower Beeding for BBC Sussex & Surrey’s “Local Heroes”, with a repertoire from traditional toe-tapping military marches, classical favourites, selections to Jazz, Big Band and modern pop/rock. They always finish every performance with a rousing march and unofficial

anthem of the county - “Sussex By The Sea”. Highlights of the band’s 40th Anniversary this year will include being at the unveiling of a statue in East Grinstead dedicated to pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe in June. Then in October, in this the centenary year of the outbreak of World War I, they will be performing a series of concerts in Belgium, culminating with the honour of performing at the famous and moving “Last Post Ceremony” at the Menin Gate, Ypres. The band are exceptionally proud to represent the people of East Grinstead in Belgium. A band member said recently, “playing in a local band is great fun, and such a rewarding experience. I’ve not been a member of the Band long, but I’ve enjoyed so many concerts, and helped to raise a lot of money”. As a self-funding organisation the band is reliant on funds raised throughout the year, they always welcome donations/sponsorship – especially for their forthcoming Belgian concert tour. For more information about booking the band for an event, donating/sponsoring and joining see: www.egcb. co.uk and www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/band or contact Gerry Harris 01342 716992.
