Flat roof repairs

Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

May is a perfect time to do upgrades in your home and garden and hopefully one of our many local businesses can be of use to you. This month we are able to bring you a wonderful walk in the beautiful Ashdown Forest which starts not far from West Hoathly. You may not have heard of the Oasis Nature Reserve which is an incredible but rarely seen reserve right within our midst, you’ll have a chance to visit it very soon, see page 7. Local resident Steve Cook is set to walk the entire coast of the UK, see our feature about his incredible feat on page 18. If you are a community group or local charity or are an individual undertaking any charity work, please drop us a line. Thank you for all your feedback, it is always welcome. Tally & Chris

Nettles...Naturally Historically in Northern Europe, the fibre from the stems of nettles was woven into “linen”. In fact in Scotland, a material made from nettle fibres was used right up to the seventeenth century, and was claimed to be one of the most durable of fabrics. Nettle fibre was used by both Europeans and Native Americans to make strong ropes and fishing nets. Although cotton is easier to harvest and spin, nettle fibre is both softer and more hard wearing. Spring is definitely here and what a spring it has been so far. My bees are returning day in day out with their pollen sacks filled and the colony is steadily growing. It’s not hard to notice that the hedgerows and gardens are starting to burst forth with new shoots and the scenery is daily changing. So at this time of year number one on my foraging list is the stinging nettle, Urtica dioica. This humble plant is a mainstay in my larder and medicine cabinet and it is the perfect time to start picking it. Later as the season turns to summer and the plant goes to flower, the lower leaves develop a crystal which irritates both the kidneys and the urinary tract. Unfortunately we live in a world that is obsessed with the latest fad or trend. “Superfoods” have become a national and media obsession. It seems that everyone is searching for the next vegetable grown by a small tribe on the side of some far and distant mountain that will be the saviour of all our dietary needs. Well I’ll let you into a little secret, look no further than the end of your garden or the closest hedgerow. Nettles are not only abundant, local and sustainable, they are packed full of goodness. They are the equivelant of spinach on steroids. They are a powerhouse of a vegetable containing: • Vitamin A, C, E, F, K, P • Vitamin B- complexes as well as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, B-6 all of which are found in high levels and act as antioxidants.

Nettles have been used medicinally for over two thousand years. Uses historically have been to stop all kinds of internal and external bleeding. Nettle tea has been used to help nursing mothers produce milk and it also stimulates the digestive glands of the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder. Applied externally, nettle tea can be used as a rinse to help strengthen hair and treat dandruff. Nettles provide excellent support for complex metabolic disorders especially when connective tissue is involved. Allergies, arthritis and eczema respond extremely well to treatment with nettles. It is a soothing medicine for urinary irritation and has the ability to soften and dissolve hard deposits like kidney or bladder stones. It is a wonderful blood tonic and helps with treating a number of menstrual conditions, being both supportive and tonifying, due to its ability to increase red blood cells. It is incredibly versatile as a vegetable and only requires crushing or heating in order to nullify the sting, thus allowing you to use it to make a great wild pesto sauce. Nettle soup is a wonderful way to utilise this vegetable as an edible and a medicinal at the same time. NB: Remember to always consult an expert when foraging and self medicating. Always ID plants 100% before consuming and seek a professionals advice. Any medicinal uses described above are only a general guide and diagnosis and treatment is far more complicated than explained in this brief article. Always seek the advice of a practitioner or doctor for any ailments.

“Refreshingly different”

The Oasis nature reserve, gardens, and education centre has often been described by visitors as “refreshingly different”. Hidden within beautiful surroundings near West Hoathly the Oasis has also been described as “one of Sussex’s best kept secrets”. This quiet seclusion is aided by the fact that the Oasis is only accessible to the public on four open days each year, with places needing to be booked well in advance to avoid disappointment. It is owned and managed by ‘The Wildlife For All Trust’. Iain Scott, the director, says “The Oasis is to nature reserves what Glyndebourne is to opera although I’m more of a Status Quo fan myself to be honest!”.

think that you’re inside an aviary. “We do ‘no-nonsense’ wildlife gardening which it really works”, Iain adds. Oasis Woods is semi-natural ancient woodland, a reminder of what England used to look like in times gone past. Mass displays of bluebells lead downwards through old oak and ash trees, with herds of wild deer often seen on open days, to old hornbeams and an unpolluted stream inhabited with trout and visited by kingfishers. Woodpeckers and owls are heard many times daily. Captive-bred groups of meerkats (always popular) and bat-eared foxes can be seen close-up in

The Oasis Gardens provide a stunning introduction for visitors. “We have one of the best collections of perennials anywhere,” says Becky, head gardener, “and my high standards mean that we only have the best of the best plants.” On a sunny day, there are butterflies everywhere - and the bird song can make you

The Beauty of Biking local road network – although as we all know – some hills are involved! We hope that this new facility brings the best of both worlds to visitors to this part of the world. By combining the ability for people coming down on the rail connection from London and the having the option of a day on the Bluebell’s magnificent steam railway or a rather more active option of cycling through this intriguing and beautiful part of the world. A longer term plan is to open up the path network and make improved access and surfaces so that more and more people can visit the many various tourism attractions that the Kingscote Valley has to offer. A facility that we think is unique having a host of facilities that are all in fact connected by a network of walks and trail! The new bike hire facility has come about as part of the work of the Kingscote Valley Project. This is a new tourism and attractions group based around the KIngscote Valley and the area surrounding Weirwood Reservoir.

Just some of the Kingscote Valley attractions and activities are: • A network of public footpaths and bridle paths, • The Gravetye Woods (Forestry Commission), • Bluebell Railway (Kingscote Station is 0.6 miles from Kingscote Estate),

One of the aims of the group is to encourage the various partners to launch joint projects and help promote each other which the bike hire scheme does.

• Blackland Farm: 120-acre site and multi-purpose site activity centre, • Deers Leap Bikes: 240-acre mountain bike park, • Weirwood Reservoir: sailing club and protected Nature Reserve and much more!

The two partners are Deers Leap Outdoor Adventure, who are bringing their skills and experience in the field to work with the Bluebell Railway at their Kingscote Valley station. So it will be possible for a two-way hire and return of bikes between the two locations. The options are for Bluebell Railway passengers to hire bikes at the station or at Deers Leap’s site at Saint Hill Green and they can then explore the surrounding area’s off-road network of trails, which in fact connect the two locations or to explore further, both through the Gravetye Woods, which have a host of trails or indeed further afield on the

A WALK BEYOND THE PALE 2.5 miles / 3.8 km

With Thanks to the Ashdown Forest Centre and Conservators for allowing us to reproduce their walk leaflet (edited version below). There are other walk leaflets available at the Forest Centre.

Start from Goat car park and, with the road facing you, walk towards the entrance. Turn right and walk along the grassy bank for about 15 metres up the road towards the cross roads to a wooden post. Pause here and look across Legsheath Lane where it joins the junction and you will see a giant redwood tree planted to mark the centenary of the Meridian Line in 1984. Turn right at the post and follow the ride that goes straight ahead between the trees. Follow the ride as it quickly emerges on to a small patch of open heath where gorse grows along the edge of the ride. You will now be walking parallel to the road on your left and at this point you will cross the Meridian Line. Once you cross a tarmac drive, continue straight ahead into the woods. Stay on the wide track all the way until you come to a T-junction. Turn right and, after a short while, the ride emerges again on to open heathland. Follow the main ride through the middle of the heath and bear right at the next junction of the rides and then the path descends

into the woods. After a short distance you will pass the second Meridian giant redwood tree on your left (as you are now crossing the Meridian Line for the second time) and continue on the path as it descends gradually downhill through the trees. At the next junction, in a woodland glade of mature beech trees, turn left. Turn right at the next path and on your left are now the remains of the old forest boundary.

You may not realise that the term ‘forest’ does not mean a landscape covered with trees, but derives from the name for a royal hunting park with special powers to protect the deer within it. The historic area of the hunting forest was considerably larger than the area within the present Ashdown Forest boundaries (which were mostly set after a large-scale sale of land at the end of the 17th century) and was enclosed by a ‘Pale’- a ditch and a bank with the ditch to the inside, with a wooden

fence built on top of the bank to prevent the deer escaping. The medieval Pale (part of which is now on your left) was first referred to in records from the 13th century. Access through the Pale was by “gates” or “hatches” and some of these survive today in place names such as Chelwood Gate and Chuck Hatch. (Just along this path, you will see a small footpath marker sign on the right, pointing to the start of a footpath opposite, that leaves the forest and takes you to Weir Wood reservoir). Continue downhill as more of the pale and possibly an old sunken cart track is revealed on your left and cross the stream (or Ghyll, which may run red due to the presence of iron deposits) at the bridge at the end of the path. Now follow the path up the hill to

where it joins a cart track where you bear right and join a tarmac drive. Continue forward and follow the tarmac track all the way to the road. Cross the road taking the small sunken path diagonally opposite, which then runs along the bottom of the open heath. The narrow path eventually drops down into a hollow which is thought to be a marl pit (marl is lime-rich mud containing clay). Come out of the hollow and follow the path until it meets the ride where you turn right. Follow the wide ride through open heath until you come to a junction. Just before a memorial stone complete with compass points (in bushes to the right of the path), take the right fork and continue across open grassy heath until you reach the road again. Cross the road and turn left along the other side of the trees and you are walking parallel to the road on your left. At the far end of the heath follow the path as it carries on into the woods and over a small stream. Now climb on the main path that shortly emerges on to open heathland again. Walk through some birch trees and emerge next to the seat just below Goat car park. A pub called the Goat once stood at the crossroads at Goat car park. The pub was an infamous destination for smugglers coming up from the coast. Tea and brandy were the main commodities smuggled during the 18th century. Changing People’s Health Naturally East Grinstead based Dr Simi Khanna has been practicing in the field of medicine for over 30 years and initially qualified and worked as a conventional hospital doctor. She then trained extensively in various forms of advanced natural health care and has provided assistance to vast number of people over the years, both locally and elsewhere, on their road to good health. She is introducing ‘Anergy therapy’, a new and effective therapy based completely on natural groundbreaking technology which can change your health by boosting your body’s own ability to recover and restore itself. Increased stress, environmental and dietary toxins, illnesses, surgery, constantly weaken the body’s ability to maintain healthy metabolism over time which has a negative impact. Anergy therapy is based on a unique natural technology (which does not involve breathing of concentrated oxygen) that sparks the energy producing “factory” within the cells and also provides greater amount of utilisable oxygen to the body so it can start to heal itself.

Although the responses to treatment differ depending upon the person’s unique biochemical individuality and lifestyle factors, some of the main effects which can be produced are: significant increase of energy, speedier removal of toxins, decrease in free radicals, improved blood circulation, visual capacity, nervous system functions especially those which are involved with relaxation and digestion, regulation of metabolism boosting of immunity. The treatments are gentle, noninvasive and painless lasting up to 30 minutes per treatment. Conditions that have been addressed by Anergy therapy are: Tiredness and Fatigue, Sleep difficulties and disorders, Visual disorders especially Macular Degeneration, Retinitis, Glaucoma, Respiratory difficulties including Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease), Circulatory and Heart disorders, Migraines, Tinnitus, Low metabolism, Effects of Stress on the body, Oxygen deficiency, Memory and Concentration problems, Recovery from Injuries, Pain, Regulation of Blood

Come Hell or High Water:

Walk the Kingdom Local resident Steve Cook will be undertaking the most daunting of challenges by walking the entire coast of the UK starting May 1st. Based on 20 miles a day and over 200 days on the road, he estimates that he will walk over 4000 miles in total. Here he explains what prompted him to take on, at 63 years of age, this most physically demanding of challenges: What made you decide to walk the entire coast of the UK, was it a hard decision to make? I wanted to help former British Martial Arts Champion Pete Dwan’s tireless charity work in the field of drug education. Pete’s mission statement is to ‘reach the kids before the dealers do’ and I decided that the best way I could do this was to do something ‘huge’ and walking the entire coast fitted the bill (a massive undertaking for a man of my age, or indeed any age) to raise

awareness for Pete’s vital work. To explain, Pete gives his ‘say no to drugs’ talks to children in schools across the whole of the UK and receives a fantastic response from teachers, children and parents alike. His successful approach is taught to parents and teachers too and in my opinion this educational approach is the way forward. It was not a difficult decision to make, although to be honest it was only as I began to prepare for this walk and got as better idea of exactly what it involved that I realised I had committed myself to a massive task. This is not something I would do unless the cause was important enough to justify putting myself through this hardship. It is a chance for me to make a personal contribution to a very worthy cause and also to my country.

What training have you undertook in preparation? I’ve done lots and lots and lots of walking! I did not start out as a particularly fit or energetic guy and I’m now 63 years old. But I need to walk about twenty miles every day for over two hundred days in order to get around the entire coast in a decent time so I had to build my fitness up and pretty much re-invent myself so as to stand any chance of pulling this off. I can now walk twenty miles carrying a ten kilo backpack and am confident I can do what I set out to do provided I pace myself sensibly. What has the highlight been so far? The warmth and good wishes of so many people, the kindness of donations and the indications that the community both locally

and across the nation will get behind this crusade. It has been the confirmation of what I always believed: that our country is populated by millions of good and generous people.

Sowing the Seeds of Change

How do you think it will all play out? I start my walk on the first of May in East Grinstead High Street, walk south to the coast, turn left at the sea and just keep walking with the sea on my right. Saying goodbye to my friends and family will be very hard but the encouragement of well-wishers will help me feel less lonely out on the road. What support and media coverage have you had so far? I’ve had good local press and done a number of radio interviews both here and in the States. Strong interest from The Liberty Beacon, a US-based global alternative media network, has been a big and very pleasant surprise. How will people be able to follow and support your adventure? I will be taking an iPad with me and making daily video updates as well as taking lots of pictures. These will be uploaded to my website and Facebook and Twitter pages. I will also be making two radio shows a week via my mobile or iPad – one in the States and one in the UK – possibly more as this adventure unfolds and these too will be posted on my website. I recently made a show for the States, along with Pete, and you can listen to this through my website. How can people help make this crusade a success? They can make a donation through the website. Anything people can afford will be very much appreciated. All donations will go to Pete Dwan’s Drug Education Campaign. How can people contact you? Anyone can email me at walkthekingdom2015@gmail.com. For more information see: www.walkthekingdom.co.uk

Local resident Lucy Doyle initiated the Windmill Lane Community Garden Project by contacting EG in Bloom and formulating a plan of action to turn an unused piece of land into something the local community can be proud of. Along with Julie Mockford, Chairman of EG in Bloom, she approached WSCC about the project who have given their full support. Here is a Q&A with Lucy about the project: What prompted you to initiate this community project? As a parent and local resident I became concerned about the use of the area, as extending parking for school runs. Not only was it being parked on and causing obstructions, but vehicles were using it to drive over, which of course pedestrians are not expecting making it a serious hazard. I think it is important for communities to take pride in their surroundings and the area was becoming unsightly as the tuff was regularly being churned into a mud bath. What local support have you had so far? Well the project would not have developed from being an area that was secured and protected from vehicles, to a Wildflower community garden without the East Grinstead in Bloom team, namely Julie Mockford who has just been incredible. We have had fantastic support from both local volunteers, some from St Mary’s Church and council volunteers from as far away as Worthing. Sir Nicholas Soames has pledged 4 fruit trees to the project and Haskins have donated compost, plants and even a couple of members of staff to help. Looking ahead, how do you think the gardens will all take shape? Once completed we will have a garden that is accessible to all and will serve as a secure area

(from vehicles) in which the local community can get involved in planting, growing and just enjoying sitting in it, as we have funding for benches. Julie has come up with so many ideas to make the area interactive and being a nutritionist myself edibles are high up on my agenda, so we are keen to make this garden one that can be useful, not just beautiful. What effect are you hoping this will have in the local community? I hope that it will become a place that people feel they can actually get their hands on, rather than just admire from a distance. We already have older volunteers who will soon be mixing with child volunteers, scouts groups and schools. I really hope that it will become a hub of activity and a place that doesn’t become a forgotten bit of wasteland as it is on the main pass through for traffic into the town. The opportunities for using the garden as a learning and exploring hub, are endless.

Gardening in Spring start to show off their glorious colour and we are rewarded with months of splendid blooms. Of course things in the garden don’t always work out quite as planned. I grew what I thought were Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ flowers from seed, last year they didn’t flower and this year they were full of buds that gave a fairly impressive display of deep red flowers. Oh my goodness, what happened to the various subtle shades of mauve and purple that had been chosen specifically to complement the rest of the planting? – jolly good job I wasn’t aiming for a Chelsea Gold! Exciting and inspiring ideas will be in abundance this month with the Chelsea Flower Show taking centre stage on our televisions, in magazines and newspapers. In fact some years the effect has been as daunting as it has inspirational – all the perfectly planted gardens, everything just flowering at the same time, even interesting combinations that in our own gardens are months apart. Imagine the pressure of being the team responsible for getting all the plants to perform at their very best for a specific date in May – each and every plant having to earn its place in the garden - all we have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

But these mistakes are the joy of gardening, they prompt new thoughts and ideas, serendipity inspiring new combinations – be brave and plant new species, be bold with colour and structure - create your very own piece of Chelsea. Happy gardening… Clare Parkinson Horticultural Manager and Garden Designer Imberhorne Lane Nursey

And that is the beauty of our own gardens; we can work as hard as the mood takes us. Not for us that all the plants have to flower for a set date – unless of course you have agreed to have your daughters wedding reception in your garden in which case the pressure’s all yours! Garden Testimonial for J.H. Vartan Like all things, if you want to get a job done professionally, go to a professional! Its really important to use someone who knows what they are doing and has considerable experience, especially where the use of heavy and potentially dangerous equipment is part of the need. Tree stump grinding is not something for an Amateur to undertake!! The risk of personal injury or damage to adjacent property makes this service something unique to a first class and trusted professional and one such, that I am happy to recommend is Jonathan Vartan. In my case, he came highly recommended as being the right man for a particularly hazardous area of stump grinding on a hillside, on an uneven and muddy surface with limited access. To be honest I didnt think it was going to be possible in the circumstances but despite all the problems, it was!!. Jonathan arrived, surveyed the area, determined a safe pattern to move the equipment around and set to work. Before the day was done, it was finished to my great satisfaction and the site left tidy and safe with the equipment removed and no damage done to the surrounding area. Brilliant! If You have a stump grinding situation of your own to deal with I cheerfully recommend JONATHAN VARTAN.

This month’s recipe is provided by Peter Bayless, Masterchef Winner 2006

Summer fruits in a Rosé Wine Jelly served with strawberry jus and clotted cream Nothing heralds summer like the arrival of summer berries and here is a dish that makes the most of their freshness, colour, flavours and beauty.

Ingredients

Enough for 12 – 14 portions Large punnet of strawberries (400g) 150g raspberries 150g blueberries 150g blackberries 100g red currants One bottle rosé wine

12 plates of gelatine 1 ½ tablespoons caster sugar For the jus Juice of one lemon Tablespoon caster sugar

Method Wash all the fruits under running water and drain thoroughly. Cut the green tops off the strawberries and halve them top to bottom. Strip the red currants from their stems using the tines of a fork. Set 250g strawberries aside and gently mix the remainder with the other washed fruits. Place the gelatine leaves in a bowl and cover with cold water. Place the sugar into a saucepan with a splash of the rosé wine and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Now add the remainder of the wine and warm through. Remove the saucepan from the heat, squeeze out the now soft gelatine and add to the wine stirring to dissolve completely. If there are some stubborn stick bits of gelatine carefully re-heat the pan while stirring, but on no account allow the mixture boil or the jelly will not set. Leave the saucepan aside until the rosé jelly has completely cooled down. Lightly oil a 12 inch terrine dish and scatter a little of the fruit into the base. Cover with liquid jelly and refrigerate until set. Repeat this process 4 times and when the final layer is set add another layer of liquid jelly to completely cover the fruits. Not only will the jelly preserve the fruits but also the solid layer of jelly will prevent your fruit jelly from collapsing when cut. Once fully set, turn out onto clingfilm and wrap it up completely. Keep the terrine in the fridge and try to minimise the

24

time it spends out of the fridge before serving. Cut with a serrated knife removing the clingfilm just before serving. To make the strawberry jus, put the 250g saved trimmed strawberries into a metal bowl together with the sugar and lemon juice. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and place it over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Leave for 3 hours. While still hot, remove the clingfilm from the top of the bowl and pour the contents through a colander into another bowl. Do not squeeze the pulp as this will make your jus go cloudy. Discard the pulp and decant the jus into a suitable container or squeezy bottle ready for serving. The jus will keep in the fridge for over a week. To serve, place a slice of the fruit jelly in the middle of the plate, squeeze a couple of circles of jus round the outside and top with a quenelle of clotted cream. ©Peter Bayless 2015 Peter Bayless will be holding a Morroccan Evening at Perryhill Orchards (see ad on right) on Friday 22nd May which includes a 3 course meal prepared for you. During which he will also have a chat about his experiences on Masterchef and his experiences following on from that. The Moroccan evening sold out very quickly last year. Tickets are £39 per head. At 7:15pm. For more information about Peter Bayless’s upcoming courses see ‘The Kitchen Academy’ on page 21.

Local History Notes

Warrens by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

The reason for the word “warren in a place name is fairly obvious: it is a place where rabbits lived. What is not generally realised is that they are not native to England and their presence here dates only from the twelfth century. The Normans introduced them into this country from France. Warrens, now a general name for a colony of rabbits, was originally specific to areas which were controlled and belonged to a wealthy individual. We are familiar with the severe punishments meted out on those who poached deer from the estates of the gentry but for many decades rabbits were as highly prized. All hunting rights belonged to the monarch and he alone could give permission for the hunting of any animal. Rabbit meat was a luxury, as was their fur. Only aristocrats were allowed to eat the meat or wear the fur. Anyone from the lower orders 26

caught with either product was severely punished. Warrens were often to be found in deer parks. The warrens themselves would also be enclosed within, sometimes this would be by means of a simple pale or fence but more often this would be strengthened with the addition of a ditch or moat around the area. Rabbits, like most animals, can swim if desperate but do not like getting wet. Rabbits were not used to the cold and damp of the English climate when first introduced and had to be well loooked after. A warrener would be employed to make sure that their conditions were good and so they would thrive. He also served as a deterrent for any who had designs on the rabbits. Rabbits need soft ground to dig out their burrows. The heathland of Ashdown Forest was an

living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk

excellent environment for rabbits and there were several thriving warrens on it These survive only in the place names: Broadstone Warren, Hindleap warren and Wrens Warren. Between Felbridge and Crawley Down there is the remains of a furnace connected to the iron industry in the area called Warren Furnace and there is evidence of another warren between Crawley Down and Turners Hill. The fur was very important. Usually called coney, it lined and trimmed the everyday cloaks and hoods of the well-to-do. Apart from the obvious decorative and warmth giving properties it made the status of the wearer immediately apparent. Until comparatively recently the name rabbit applied only to the young animals. Adult rabbits were called conies. The farming of rabbits was at its peak in the mediaeval period when animal husbandry

of all species was becoming more prevalent and scientific. In spite of all the precautions and severe punishments for being caught poaching, it was rife. In the countryside the common people were often starving and the sight of a plump rabbit must have been very tempting. Traps would be set or the more sophisticated might use greyhounds or ferrets to catch their quarry, but this was unusual. In spite of all the efforts to keep the rabbits within the warren some inevitably escaped. They destroyed crops and were thus not popular with farmers and cottagers alike. The dilemma was that if they left the rabbits alone they lost a part of their produce but if they caught them how could they prove that the animals were escapees and not poached from a nearby warren.

soft under fur of the beaver was used to make felt which was, in turn, made into hats. Beavers had died out in Europe by the end of the sixteenth century and an alternative had to be found. The under fur of the rabbit, although not of such a high quality, was used instead. In North America beavers were still plentiful, and to own a beaver hat was a sign of wealth. In the areas where warrens were still under the control of local landowners, the punishments for poaching continued as before. As recently as the nineteeth century

people were being deported to Australia for having been caught in possession of just one rabbit! Rabbits are now bred for meat and fur in more industrial surroundings. The wild rabbit population has recovered from the dreadful disease, myxamatosis. While they still eat crops they are not in such great numbers to be that harmful to farmers. Most of us enjoy seeing them in the fields at dawn and dusk coming out to “silflay” just as Hazel, Fiver and Bigwig and their friends did in Watership Down. Long may they continue to do so.

Gradually the importance of rabbits lessened and many warrens fell into disrepair. The rabbits, by now adapted to our climate, thrived in the wild. Some warrens were kept on in the seventeenth and, even eighteenth centuries. Their pelts were used extensively in the hat making industry. Earlier the

Imberhorne gains Fairactive School’s status

Imberhorne School was recently awarded with the highly coveted FairActive schools’ status in recognition of their hard work promoting and fundraising for Fairtrade. This award follows the school winning the nationwide Margaret Demidecka Fairtrade Award (secondary schools category) last year, and with that the prize of £350. The school had already gained FairAware status, which showed the students had understanding and awareness of the Fairtrade movement. However, to gain FairActive starus, the school had to complete several challenges, host events and assemblies, formulate an action plan, etc. Most of the activities centred on Fairtrade Fortnight (23rd Feb – 8th Mar), which included the Imberhorne Fairtrade Day, when students set-up Unfair game stalls, and there was an Unfair Teachers vs. Students dodgeball match.

During that fortnight the school managed to raise £431.30. Steering Group Chairman, Henry Grub, said: “we have been working for a long time to achieve this status. It’s great that our work and achievements are now recognised. I’m very proud of the school and the work done by the Steering Group, and the school’s students! We hope now to go even further with Fairtrade.” The award is the second level out of three, the third, FairAchiever, being the most prestigious. The Steering Group say they will attempt the FairAchiever award when the applications open later this year! Well done to all involved!

ASHSTOCK IS BACK!
