“Mr Nash carried out a series of works projects that included roof tile and guttering replacement; application of hanging tiles to the rear of the property and groundworks/erection of a shed and patio area in the rear garden. “The works were finished to schedule, for reasonable fees and to a good standard. I was very pleased with the results. Throughout the contract, Mr. Nash and his colleagues behaved with care and consideration for both myself and my neighbours and were extremely professional in their conduct. “As a shareholder and director of a business for 10 years that was highly customer focused, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Nash for future projects. I found him to be organised, methodical and communicative about the progress of works with both the client and his staff and he managed the projects in a most professional manner, to budget and to time.” — Dr. C Scott

Michael Morpurgo LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum

Michael Morpurgo is one of our best known and loved modern writers. His name appears on the covers of over one hundred and thirty books, mainly written for children but enjoyed by adults too. While his name is a household word, what is not generally realised is that he lived for six years of his life at boarding school in Ashurst Wood. Michael Andrew Bridge was born on October 5th 1943 in St Albans, Hertfordshire. His mother, the actress Catherine Kippe, was living there during the Second World War while his actor father, Tony Van Bridge, was away in the army. His mother met Jack Morpurgo and married him in 1946, after divorcing her first husband. Tony Van Bridge moved to Canada shortly afterwards and remarried. Michael, who was about three at the time and probably would not have seen his biological father for some time and his older brother, Pieter, took their stepfather’s surname. Michael was nineteen before he knew the identity of his real father. He was watching the film, “Great Expectations”, on the television with his mother when he learned that the actor playing Magwitch, was COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY his father.

Michael had attended a small primary school in London and was then sent as a boarder to the Abbey School in Ashurst Wood. The Abbey School was in the building which is now converted into apartments. It stands high up, with panoramic views to Ashdown Forest. The East Grinstead museum has a photograph which is entitled “St Andrew’s School, East Grinstead”. When the school changed its name is not clear, nor whether it changed hands at this point in its history or merely changed its name. Michael hated being away from home. His only consolation lay in singing and on the rugby pitches. He then went to Kings School in Canterbury. He entered Living

Sandhurst but did not appreciate being shouted at. He then went to Kings College, London to train to be a primary school teacher. He met Clare Lane, the oldest daughter of Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin books, about this time. In spite of their youth, they soon realised that they wanted to spend their lives together, and were married in 1963, when Michael was only twenty. Their three children, Sebastian, Rosalind and Horatio arrived during the next four years. On finishing his training he found a post in Wickhambreaux, Kent. It was through reading daily to his pupils that he ran out of suitable stories and so started to make up his own. Michael wrote in bed, not at a desk, a habit he has continued with to this day. By this time Clare was also teaching. He and Clare soon realised that living in the country the children they taught were more fortunate than the city dwellers. Leaving their teaching posts, they purchased a house in Iddesleigh, Devon called Nethercott. With the cooperation of a nearby farmer they soon had a steady stream of visitors. children were given a sense of rural life, learned that milk came from cows and not the supermarket and thrived on the fresh air and locally grown food. The whole project was so successful that two more farms were acquired at Lower Tregennis in Wales and Wick Court in Gloucestershire. All three farms are still in operation today. In the forty years it has been in existence, more than 90,000 children have benefitted from the experience. Michael and Clare have now stepped back from the day-to-day running, while continuing to take a keen interest in it. Michael was made the COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Children’s Laureate in 2003. It was a project on which he living

had worked with his friend Ted Hughes some years earlier. His work has always been well known but his real fame came from the stage play of his book, “War Horse”, in which the horse was brilliantly performed by a skilled team of puppeteers. Michael’s wide interests are reflected in his numerous stories. They range from telling the story of Toto- the Amazing Dog-Gone Story of the Wizard of Oz, to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, with its origins in Arthurian legend. Kensuke’s Kingdom tells the story of Japanese survivor from the Second World War, who is still unaware that the war is over. the trenches in particular. It is this breadth of subjects that makes his body of work so impressive. His personal tastes are also diverse, from favourite author, Rudyard Kipling, to Mozart, elephants and prawns. Michael sums up his reasons for writing: “For me, the greater part of writing is day dreaming: dreaming of my story until it hatches out - then the writing down of it I always find hard. But I love finishing it, then holding the book in my hand and sharing my dream with my readers.” Long may he continue to share his dreams with his army of admirers. Enquiries: 01342 300152

LOCAL GOOD NEWS STORIES

We were sent these beautiful Spring Garden photos from Gravetye Manor gardens. Aren't they lovely!

Lacrosse Ladies Win Big! Lacrosse is another sport East Grinstead is excelling in. Having formally joined the men's club to create an integrated East Grinstead Lacrosse 4 years ago, the ladies side has gone from strength to strength. Their second year in a league has been hugely successful, having only lost one game the entire season (a narrow 11-9 defeat with only 9 players against a full team of 12). With these results the ladies team have finished top of their league with automatic promotion into the South East Division 1 next season. The team have shown huge dedication, preferring to play rather than concede a match. This has meant playing regularly with fewer players than the opposition. However, this has not stopped the goals flying into the net, with the team scoring an impressive total of 178 goals. Congratulations ladies!

Champion Chanzige Champion Chanzige, a small EG based charity, recently arranged for primary school teacher Hannah Jubb and her partner Sam Hearn to visit the school in Tanzania. They spent a week teaching English classes as well as taking a number of books and other resources with them. When Hannah returned to the UK she was able to use their experience to raise awareness in the school that she works in here. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Anne the Survivor Tudor times, perhaps the most obsessed over time period in English history, with more twists and turns than a Line of Duty plotline and more dramatic moments than an episode of EastEnders. Perhaps because of Henry VIII's love of hunting in the forest hereabouts, or perhaps because of the Boleyn connection, it is a fact that this particular area of Kent and Sussex are important sets of the Tudor stage. One such character of the stage was Anne of Cleves, Henry's fourth wife, who was gifted several properties in this area. She lived out her final years in Hever Castle but she also owned the Priest House in West Hoathly. History has brushed her off as the ugly duckling and insignificant wife who left no mark on history. Far closer to the truth is that she was a wily survivor in a court of a notorious maker and breaker of people. Such was Henry's capricious nature, he could be singing someone's praises in the morning and be signing their death warrant by supper and the worst to suffer were of course those closest to him.

Anne of Cleves, by Hans Holbein the Younger moon.” Henry had his doubts and sent renowned portrait painter Hans Holbein to "paint her likeness" and was delighted with the results (apparently he caught her at the most flattering angle!).

The German princess Anne of Cleves, was a pawn on a volatile political stage. Europe was in the grips of reformation and counterreformation fever and Henry's two great rivals, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (of Spain) and French king Francis I, had forged a treaty. Worse still, Pope Paul III had reissued the bull of excommunication against Henry. Although the then Duke of Juliers-Cleves, Johann (Anne’s father) was not a Protestant per se, just as Henry had done so he too had expelled papal authority from the region. This alliance was to provide a major boost to the Reformation in England and it was Henry’s chief minister and 'talisman' Thomas Cromwell, who championed it so enthusiastically.

When they finally met, Henry was horrified by Anne's appearance, proclaiming, 'I like her not! I like her not!' to Cromwell. Ultimately this engineered marriage would be Cromwell's own downfall. Anne was tall, big boned and had pitted skin from small pox, to be fair to Anne though, previous accounts of her looks were complimentary so perhaps she was simply not Henry's type; his previous wives had all been petite. Henry was no looker himself by this time. A dashing young man, his good looks were long gone by then. Apart from extreme obesity, he'd developed Dorian-Gray-portrait-style sly, cynical

The famed strategian Cromwell said this of Anne's beauty, “Every man praiseth the beauty of COMMUNITY the same ladyDIRECTORY as well for the face as for the BUSINESS whole body… she excelleth as far the duchess (of Milan) as the golden sun excelleth the silver Living living

ANNE THE SURVIVOR CONTINUED

kisses me, and biddeth me, Farewell, darling. Is this not enough?”... eekk. The Countess of Rutland clarified to Anne that no, this would not be enough! The English ambassador to Cleves described Anne as being of “lowly and gentle conditions”, and noted that, “she occupieth her time most with the needle”. It seems her awkwardness and lack of sophistication rendered her an embarrassment in the scheming and back-biting world of the Tudor court. However Henry did ensure he appeared in public jubilant with his new queen as, just a few days after the wedding, a celebratory tournament was held in Greenwich. The contemporary chronicler Edward Hall, while recording the event praised the new queen effusively, “She was appareiled after the English fashion, with a French hood, which so set forth her beauty and good visage, that every creature rejoiced to behold her". Of course Tudor England was on tenterhooks about keeping their king pleased at all times so one wonders at the truth of this account!

The Priest House, West Hoathly features. No one would have dared to broach a compromise with Henry on that basis! Alas it would have been a diplomatic faux pas of magnitude had Henry reneged on the treaty with Cleves. Thus the wedding took place on the 6th of January 1540.

Alas the marriage was doomed. By the spring of 1540, Henry had fallen madly in love with Catherine Howard, a pretty young lady-inwaiting in his wife’s household. His lust spurred him into action. Thomas Cromwell had by this

Their wedding night was a disaster... the account of the day after the night before is well documented. He bemoaned to Cromwell: “She is nothing fair, and have very evil smells about her.” He claimed there were “tokens” to suggest that she was no maid, “the looseness of her breasts”, which he had apparently examined closely. He confided to a manservant, his bride was “indisposed to excite and provoke any lust” in him and he “could never be stirred to know her carnally”. He had, “left her as good a maid as I found her”. One of Henry's other complaints was that Anne was not well bred or knowledgeable enough and had only learned simple housewife skills... this may have at least some credence, as of her marriage Anne confided to her attendants that she believed she might be pregnant, telling them: “When he (Henry) comes to bed he kisses COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY me, and taketh me by the hand, and biddeth me, Goodnight, sweetheart: and in the morning Living living

ANNE THE SURVIVOR CONTINUED

She had not only survived her marriage somewhat unscathed, she retained a very high position of power.

Hever Castle

© Christoph Matthias Siebenborn

Later still Henry granted her additional manors, including Hever Castle, the former home of Anne Boleyn, and The Priest House in West Hoathly plus the Anne of Cleves House in Lewes. Hever was to become her principal residence, and she lived very comfortably in this beautiful Kent home, just down the road from us, on the fringes of public life. Henry even visited her on several occasions and always welcomed her graciously to court. She adapted to her new life with dignity.

time been disgraced and arrested for treason, he was bidden to give evidence from the Tower in support of an annulment which he gave willingly in the hope it would spare him the chop.

Henry and Catherine Howard were married in 1540. A short lived marriage Catherine was a flirtatious girl and 32 years younger than her husband, she had an affair with a gentleman of the privy chamber and was tried and beheaded for treason.

Anne was instructed to leave court and go to Richmond Palace. There she was told her marriage to Henry had been called into question because Henry was "concerned" about her prior betrothal to the Duke of Lorraine, and had therefore refrained from consummating the union.

Speculation began at once about who would be the king’s next wife. Incredibly Anne of Cleves was considered a very possible candidate, maybe because theirs was now a warm and convivial relationship. Anne had shown no signs of resentment at being humiliated, the pair had exchanged New Year’s gifts, among other social graces. As we all know unsurprisingly Henry choose the newest court beauty Katherine Parr.

An ecclesiastical inquiry was commissioned, and a delegation of councillors arrived at Richmond to seek Anne’s co-operation. Per accounts Anne fainted from shock and refused to give her consent to the inquiry. However what makes Anne a survivor is that perhaps through good advice or divine intervention before long she realised only a fool would take on a fight with a tyrannical narcissist as Henry, in true German pragmatic style she gave in to his wishes. The marriage was declared illegal and annulled. Anne wrote a letter of submission referring to “your majesty’s clean and pure living with me”, and offering herself up as his “most humble servant”. To say Henry was pleased is an understatement, which was always a good omen in the Tudor period!

By that time, Anne was comfortably living at Hever with all the riches and honours of being a kings sister, but none of the disadvantages of being married to the ageing and increasingly sporadic, iron-fisted king. She remained there for the rest of her days, outliving Henry, who died in 1547 and his son Prince Edward. She even attended Mary I's coronation despite the fact she was a known reformist and Mary the opposite - as we know Mary was to attempt to make England Roman Catholic once again.

Anne was rewarded and honoured. She was given Richmond Palace and Bletchingly Manor for life, together with a considerable annual income. Allowed to keep all her royal jewels and given goods to furnish her new properties, incredible still, she was graced with the exalted status of "the king’s sister"; taking precedence COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY over all of his subjects, with the exception of his children and any future wife. Living living

Anne died at the age of 41 from a short lived illness. By the day's standards she had not lived a short life. She survived Henry and all of his other wives. Anne the Ugly? No, Anne the Survivor!

Smoked Salmon, Scallop and Dill Terrine with Bitter Lemon Purée Serves 4

By Pete Howes, Pastry Chef at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

1kg sliced smoked salmon 8 scallops 500ml double cream 1 bunch of dill, chopped 6 lemons 375ml white wine vinegar 275g caster sugar 250g crème fraîche 1 bunch coriander

Method

until you are ready to use – repeat until you have used all of the salmon, mousse and scallops.

1. Chill the bowl of your food blender in the fridge before you start cooking. Once cold, remove from the fridge and add 500g of the smoked salmon and blend to a smooth paste.

7. For the bitter lemon purée, put the vinegar and sugar into a pan and bring to the boil, cook out for 3-4 minutes and leave to one side.

2. Slowly add the double cream into the blender to form a mousse. Add the zest of one lemon and season with white pepper (no salt, as the smoked salmon is already salty) then place the mousse in the fridge.

8. Put the lemons into cold water with a teaspoon of salt, and poach for 1 hour and leave to go cold 9. Remove the lemons from the water and cut in half. Remove the pips and flesh, place the skin into a blender with the pickling syrup and blend until smooth, then place in the fridge.

3. Take your scallop meat and dice into 1cm pieces and cook off in butter and olive oil, this will only take 3-4 minutes, then allow to go cold.

10. Serve with a bowl of crème fraîche and a dressed salad and enjoy!

4. Chop the dill and stir it into the salmon mousse, then put the mousse in a piping bag.

11. Leave to cool until warm, but not completely cold, then serve with clotted cream and your favourite preserves.

5. Place a square of smoked salmon on a large piece of cling film and pipe some of the salmon mousse at one end, then place a few of the cooked pieces of scallop on top, then top with a little extra mousse.

National Cats Protection Centre, 1927-2017 We have a come a long way from our inauguration in 1927. Back then cats were viewed with indifference. The concern of just a few cat lovers heralded an organisation that has since grown into the UK's largest cat welfare charity. Since then Cats Protection has achieved so much: In 1928 CPL (Cats Protection League) set out to be an educational body. In 1931 the first magazine was created, The Cats Mews Sheet. In 1950 CPL's main aim was to establish shelters and this was aided significantly by receiving a legacy for this sole purpose. CPL were also actively seeking changes in legislation so that the plight of cats might be improved. 1955 saw the 21st anniversary of The Cat Magazine. 1978 Current headquarters closed, and was moved to Horsham. 1990 One of the charity's main objectives has always been to inform the public about the care of cats and kittens, and packs were handed out to school children as the cat owners of the future. Penns in the Rocks Penns in the Rocks is a beautiful country home in the nearby village of Groombridge (20 minutes drive from East Grinstead) it is in private ownership, however there will be ONE opportunity to view it this year, in May when it opens for the NGS. Here is a little history about this fascinating estate: Penns in the Rocks takes its name from William Penn, the famous founder of Pennsylvania, who came into the property in 1672 by marrying Guiglielma Springett, heiress to a wealthy iron founding family from Ringmer. Rocks Farm, as it was then called, was her dowry. It is therefore not surprising that hidden in the woods not far from the house lie the remains of RomanoBritish and Medieval iron workings, since these woods and indeed the whole of the Ashdown Forest area were the scene of extensive iron founding operations for centuries before the seventeenth century. The name also includes its most dramatic feature: the rocks. An extraordinary assemblage of great boulders, formed of white sand, which was once, many thousands of years ago, part of a sea bed. The sea receded leaving these sandy deposits which have developed a grey rocky crust. As Vita Sackville

West wrote of them, “The trees grow out of the fissures in the rocks so that their roots twine and twist over the stone”. Guiglielma and William are thought never to have lived at Penns, but it was left to their son, William Penn IV, who did live there, and it remained in the family for the next 100 years or so. In William Penn’s day the house was a typical farm house, built on an east facing slope with a large farmyard surrounded by barns and stables below it, occupying the space which is now the cedar lawn. However, in 1732 the house was upgraded by the addition on its south side of a new wing with a handsome

classical facade, looking across at the romantic rocks. The farm house had become a gentleman’s residence, and changed its name from Rocks Farm to Penn’s House in the Rocks, sometimes abbreviated to Penns in the Rocks, or just Penns Rocks. In 1762 Penns was sold to the Osbourne family, who lived here until they in turn sold it to a Mr Beeching at an auction in Tunbridge Wells on October 10th 1832 (an advertisement for this is kept in the house today). This gentleman had even grander ideas. He enlarged the South front with the addition of extra bays to the left and right of the facade, Continues over the page. bought it and lived there until her death in 1956. Here she held court to many of the major literary figures of the mid 20th Century, especially the great WB Yeats, with whom she enjoyed an intense poetic and romantic relationship. She also did much to improve the garden, laying out the walled garden as a flower garden, creating the swimming pool and pond gardens. One would guess that as a close friend and neighbour Vita helped her bring this poetic paradise into being. In 1938 Dorothy built a special “Temple of Friendship” at the top of the glade looking down on the house, which she dedicated to the “Poets who loved Penns”.

WB Yeats and Dorothy Wellesley by the south front of Penns. and four dormer windows in the roof. He increased the size of the farmhouse behind by extending its east front and raising the level of the roof. He built a new block to the north side, incorporating a grand ball room on the first floor with handsome bedrooms on the second. He did not wish to look out onto a farmyard, so he demolished its buildings and laid down a lawn with a cedar tree each side (only one survives, on the rocks side) and finished it off with a ha-ha to protect it from the farm cattle in the field beyond ( a ha-ha is a recessed landscape design feature that creates a vertical barrier-like wall to block cattle from entering, while preserving an uninterrupted view of the landscape beyond).

The Duchess died in 1956, and my parents bought the Penns estate from her executors. They refurbished the house as a comfortable family home, and continued to develop and improve the garden with the help of their great friend, Lanning Roper, one of the leading garden designers of his day. When my mother died in 2012, I inherited Penns. A year later my wife and I moved here, after spending 43 years in the peak district of Derbyshire, back to my boyhood home. Hugh Gibson, Owner of Penns in the Rocks

Lastly he built a splendid stone-walled garden on the west side above the house, so that now Penns could claim all the accoutrements of 19th century gentleman’s country mansion. In 1852 Mr. Beeching sold Penns to the Pryce family, who lived there until the 1920s, when once again it was put on the market. Vita Sackville West and her friend Dorothy Wellesley (later Duchess of Wellington) went to see it in April 1928, and fell in love. “It was absolutely fantastic” wrote Vita to her husband Harold, “a mixture of the most absurdly romantic age, and Shakespearean COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY scenery, especially Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Walter de la Mare, and Piranesi....”. PENNS IN THE ROCKS CONTINUED

Last year Penns in the Rocks opened for the National Garden Scheme for the first time, this year it is open again on Sunday 14th May (2 - 6pm). As well as the beautiful gardens you’ll be able to see sculptures too. Last month Frances Gibson’s brother, Richard Strachey, delivered two major pieces of his stone sculpture for display in the garden. They look wonderful in situ, and will, they hope, greatly add to the pleasure of visiting the garden. The first is “Foxgloves” which they commissioned for the pedestal in the walled garden, in memory of Hugh’s

parents, Pat and Dione Gibson. The second is “Hazel”, which they have placed in the corner overlooking the courtyard. Richard Strachey’s sculpture is represented in several private collections, and last year he exhibited a number of pieces at the prestigious “On Form” stone sculpture exhibition, which is held every other year in the garden of Asthall Manor in Oxfordshire. Richard’s sculpture will not only be visible to garden visitors to Penns in the Rocks this year, but he is showing four of his works at nearby Borde Hill Garden Sculpture 2017 exhibition, which opens on

12th May until 2nd October. Admission £6, children free. Home-made teas. Refreshments in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Restricted wheelchair access. No disabled WC. Dogs on lead in park only. Address: Groombridge, Tunbridge Wells, East Sussex, TN3 9PA. Directions: 7m SW of Tunbridge Wells. On B2188 Groombridge to Crowborough road, just S of Xrd to Withyham.
