All Sorts & Surprises Local Ashdown Forest resident, David Burt OBE, has just released his new book, ‘All Sorts and Surprises’. David started writing aged 80, using his experience working in various jobs and businesses: from his start on a building site, through National Service in the RAF, a national bank, selling and marketing and operational management before becoming the CEO of a major international manufacturing company supplying the aerospace industry. His short stories are all based on incidences that he has observed or in which he has been involved. All proceeds go to the local, Hospice in the Weald. We are pleased to be able to bring you one of these lovely short stories:

BREAKING THE HABIT Never once did Harry glance at his watch or the clock on the bakery wall. He knew by habit exactly where he was in the order of the day’s events. He did give a courtesy nod to the supervisor, who nodded back, neither spoke. He also nodded to one of the assembly girls, who smiled back at him but that was the only form of communication he had in the company as had been the case for many years because all the employees knew the longest serving deliveryman did not engage in casual chatting, indeed did not engage in any discussions.

Harry left his elderly grey mini car close to the railings in the van yard, exactly at 6:00 a.m. by the same rail section as he had the day before. Indeed, the year before or had he given the process any thought, the same rail section he had left his wellpolished little car each working day for the last twenty years.

Harry did not think about his working day routine as he walked to his company van in slot number one, precisely where he had left it at one o’clock the previous day after his delivery shift. In fact, he was not thinking about anything except the van keys in his right trouser pocket, the same company uniform trousers he wore every day for work.

At six-twenty-seven, possibly three minutes later than usual, Harry started his loaded van. The unusual delay had been caused by the bakery’s large black cat walking casually across the front of Harry’s van. Harry had watched the cat, impressed with its calm control and smooth action, delaying to start the motor until the cat had cleared his view. On the road making his way to his first café shop/bakery drop off, he fell easily into his habit mode of simply operating the van without the slightest thought, his sub-conscious reacting to junctions, traffic lights, crossroads, cyclists, cars on the way early to work, until he drew the van to a stop exactly outside the front door of the ‘Cosy Tea Cake and Teashop’, as he had been doing for nineteen unbroken years. As a committed loner, Harry had no interest in holidays, accepting the inconvenience of national and Christmas holidays but perfectly happy to return every day to his rather isolated single bed-roomed cottage to spend

Harry unlocked his company van and walked to the side door of the long factory building where, had he considered it, the sweet smell of cooking bakeries was filling the air. He tugged open the door and entered the depot, busy with white coated, white hatted and hair netted workers, collecting an array of bakeries from ovens and placing them with their paper cups on to wooden slatted trays. Harry, walked to Station One, clearly identified with a numbered card and his name, ten trays awaited his six o’clock arrival. As always Harry gave no thought to the process and he began to transport each tray with its range of cakes, buns, tarts and rolls of every filling and description at a steady pace into his van. COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Fitting each tray on to its slide in the order he would be delivering them to the cake shops on his round.

Kedgeree with a Kick Quick, cheerful and very easy to cook.. and very yummy!

METHOD INGREDIENTS • 300g easy-cook white or brown rice • 4 eggs • 200g skinless cod fillet (or pollock), cut into chunks • 120g skinless smoked haddock fillet, cut into chunks • 120g skinless salmon fillet, cut into chunks • 2 tsp curry powder • 150g frozen peas, thawed • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped • 1 pinch ground black pepper Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk Please mention us when responding to adverts

Cook the rice in boiling water until tender, according to packet instructions. At the same time, hard-boil the eggs for 10 minutes. Put the chunks of fish into a large frying pan and add a little water. Heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes until the fish is opaque. Drain. Look out for ready-prepared plain fish pie mix from the fresh fish counter - also sold prepacked - to save some money. Shell the eggs and quarter them. Drain the rice and add it to the fish with the curry powder, peas and parsley. Heat, stirring gently, for 2-3 minutes. Season with black pepper and serve, topped with the eggs. BREAKING THE HABIT Routine delivery followed routine delivery, following Harry’s tidy habitual routings. He did occasionally, when the traffic was light or the traffic signal was red, reflect upon the evening task of sorting the 1850 ‘penny red’ stamps in their year order within a new album he had acquired after several weeks of careful consideration over the size, suitability, durability and cost of the albums on offer.

any free time on his small but perfect garden or with his stamp collection, happy to avoid all but the minimum social interaction with people, as he had managed to do since he was a young boy. Harry shouldered the bakery tray and as usual the owner was on hand to open the door and once Harry had slid the tray on to the front counter, received the proffered customary mug of tea with a nod. “Going to be wet later, Harry,” advised the owner, who always gave Harry his first weather report of the day as he carried on. “Looks as if the PM is going to have his work cut out to get any sense from those EU politicians, and I see United are going to lose their manager,” Harry sipped his tea and nodded at appropriate points as the news was transmitted to him. Finally, with a nod and with a, “Same time tomorrow,” comment, he shouldered the previous day’s delivery tray and returned to the van, the shopkeeper happy that he had given the taciturn delivery man the day’s news.

Returning to the depot following his final delivery, Harry was unexpectedly forced to make a deviation from the main road down a country cut through lane as directed by the Water Board’s signs and the ‘Closed Road’ sign. Only slightly bothered by the inconvenience, Harry followed the lane for some minutes before he was forced to undertake a rapid stop when a small dog ran across the lane in front of him, causing him to step sharply on the brakes concerned he might have hit the dog. Harry pulled into a layby allowing other vehicles to continue their journey before he climbed out of his van.

On his way to his second delivery stop, his mind wandered for a moment over the possibility that he had not added the tomato feed to his watering can before he had watered the plants. The thought was so disturbing that Harry took out his neatly ironed grey handkerchief and vigorously blew his nose. The procedure was another of the little tricks that Harry used when he was concerned he might be getting into a state of anxiety by thinking of something in his daily routine that he might have missed doing.

Harry found a small terrier pup curled up in a ball in the hedge a pace or two back from his van and to his relief as he reached in through the brambles the shivering pup wagged his tail and allowed Harry to stroke him and carefully lift him out of the hedge, once Harry had decided nothing was broken. Cars continued to pass at a steady rate forcing Harry to push into the hedge to avoid them and he became fearful for the little chap, and so holding him with one arm inside his company jacket he walked back into the cab to decide what he should do.

Blowing his nose cleared his mind and in his case caused him to recall he had topped up the bird nuts in the box outside the greenhouse, tied the extended shoots on the gladioli plants and indeed had put two spoons of tomato feed into the watering can before watering each plant.

Several minutes later Harry was no clearer to a solution but the pup had settled on to the passenger seat in complete confidence, as if he owned it. There were no houses in the immediate vicinity and so short of any ideas Harry pulled out into the traffic to continue his route to the depot. Half a mile further down the lane the pup was sitting up and most comfortable when Harry caught sight of a sign ‘Waifs and Strays Dog Charity’ and he pulled the van over, encouraged by the thought he had found the pup’s home.

The disturbing thoughts did not disrupt Harry’s driving habits and he arrived exactly at seven-thirty as usual at his second delivery and was as usual greeted by the cake shop proprietor at her open door, where as usual he failed to attend to her tirade about her customers. On this morning it was about a certain lady customer and her wretched children who will finger the cakes before choosing one! Harry nodded in distant agreement as he deposited the goods and collected yesterday’s tray before a, “Same time tomorrow,” grunt as he slid past her, still COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY verbally protesting the indignities with which she had to contend, on his way out of the door.

With the pup under his arm, Harry knocked on the house front door which was opened by a small rather care worn lady in an overall with ‘Waifs and Strays Dog Charity’ insignia on the pocket. “This,” said Harry, “may be one of yours,” as he proffered the terrier pup forward. “Yes,” said the lady, without accepting the

BREAKING THE HABIT offered pup. “He escaped when the vet was here.” “Well,” said Harry, “would you like the little fellow back now?”“Not really,” said the lady. “All the litter were put down and the vet’s gone now.”“Put down.” Harry was startled and horrified as he pulled the pup back to his chest. “Why? What had they done?” “Nothing,” continued the lady sadly, “but the mother and the pups were dumped on us and although we found homes for three and the mother, we simply have no money or space in the charity to keep more than the forty dogs and we had no option.

Harry Higgins,” and without her asking Harry gave his address. “Well, Harry, you have really cheered me up taking the lovely little chap on, so as you don’t live very far away, perhaps you would call and let me know how he gets on? What are you going to call him?” , “Well I hadn’t thought, Mary,” replied Harry. And surprised as he realised he had called her by her first name without embarrassment, he went on. “You see, I was diverted down your lane, just by chance, and there he was in the lane in front of my van. Would you think ‘Chance’ would be a good name for him?” Mary clapped her hands, “How appropriate, look he already knows.”

"Could you keep this little chap, otherwise I’m afraid he will have to go when the vet visits next?” Harry positively spluttered as he reeled away from the thought that the pup would be killed. “But he cannot cost much to keep and this is a charity.”

‘Chance’ had stood up on his sturdy little legs on Harry’s lap, ears pricked, tail wagging, whether in response to the hand clap or his name was not really clear. Back at the depot Harry parked the van and with Chance in his arms he walked into the factory where suddenly he was surrounded by smiling bakery workers wanting to see and pat the pup, complimenting Harry on his decision to take on the unwanted dog. Harry found that all the attention did not throw him into a nervous retreat, as it most certainly would have only earlier that morning. Indeed with Chance wagging his tail and clearly loving the attention, Harry felt a warm glow of comfort that he had somehow stepped over the protective wall of disciplined routine which he had hidden behind for so many years, thanks to his new four-legged friend.

“It’s a charity with no money and forty dogs to feed,” said the lady. “To be honest I simply do not know how to keep going from one day to the next.” Harry then said the first spontaneous thing he had said in years. “I’ll keep him,” and to his own amazement he did not feel even a twinge of the sort of anxiety that normally overcame him whenever he did anything, or said anything out of his normal routine. The lady looked pleased and relieved. “Come in a minute,” she said beckoning him to follow her. “I have a leaflet which explains what he should eat and helpful notes on getting him settled in.” She led the way into a small neat office, filled with files and dog products. “Sit down I will make you a cup of tea.” Harry sat obediently with the pup on his lap. Harry was so disturbed to have moved out of his pedestrian comfort zone, he blurted out a question. “But why are things so bad for you? You are providing a service to the community.”

A week later with Chance in a bright red collar, Harry knocked on the door of the ‘Waifs and Strays Dog Charity’ which was opened by Mary. She smiled. “My goodness how well and smart Chance looks. I have told lots of people your story, Harry, and got one or two donations because of it. Now come in both of you.”

Had he given himself time to consider the matter he would have recognised this was the longest sentence he had spoken to anyone for several years. Indeed, since the day that a post van had backed into his van.

Sitting down with a cup of tea, Harry said. “Look I have thought a good deal about our meeting and I was wondering if I could help you raise money for the charity by taking Chance around and telling people our story. I take Chance out with me on my rounds in the mornings and I have seen how the customers respond to him and I thought we might do more for you.” Mary’s face was beaming. “What a lovely idea. Thank you so much, Harry. Anyway who are we to decide, look at Chance’s tail going, he obviously approves.”

The lady returned to the room saying, “Here’s your tea, do you take sugar? By the way I’m Mary Jones,” she continued. “Well we were fine until the lovely lady who raised funds for us in the area died last year and I just cannot look after the dogs, deal with trying to place them and raise money. I am working COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY every hour god gave me now. What’s your name?” She carried on writing in a large ledger. “Oh, er,

Nymans and the Messel Family

20 minutes from East Grinstead one can visit the beautiful grounds of National Trust Gardens Nymans. We are pleased to be able to bring you a look at its history: In 1890, Ludwig Messel a German émigré of Jewish descent bought Nymans estate in the Sussex High Weald. Seeking to make his fortune as a banker in London, in 1873 he founded stockbroking company, L Messel & Co. Nymans was his dream family home, a short commute from London, and a place where he, his wife and their six children, spent time relaxing with friends and family. Here Ludwig indulged his passion for collecting art and antiques and invited leading COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY artists and musicians of the day to visit and spend time

in the garden. This included W.S Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan fame and ‘Punch’ cartoonist Linley Sambourne. Ludwig’s son Leonard went on to marry Maud, Linley Sambourne’s daughter and so began the family’s enduring involvement connections with creative gardening and artistic circles. Ludwig’s love of gardening grew and he saw it as a means of integrating with local society families. He became friendly with families at neighbouring estates at High Beeches, Borde Hill and Leonardslee. With the knowledge and assistance of his Head Gardener, James Comber, Ludwig’s garden at Nymans became one of the Great Gardens of Sussex. By the start of the First World War Ludwig’s health began to deteriorate. He suffered from

depression, due in part to the growing anti-German feeling in Britain. He died in 1915 with a broken heart, torn between feelings of loyalty to both his homeland and his newfound home in England. His daughter Muriel, the youngest of Ludwig’s

children, was his constant companion towards the end of his life. Her keen horticultural knowledge was encouraged by both Ludwig and James Comber. As Ludwig’s health became more fragile, it was Muriel who took over the management of the garden. Tragically she only survived her father’s death in 1915 by three years, falling victim to Spanish flu in 1918. Her legacy was her contribution to ‘A Garden Flora’ . This was the definitive COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY work on the garden at Nymans, listing each and living

Following Ludwig’s death in 1915, his son Leonard inherited the estate. His wife Maud set about transforming the rather Germanic style of house, while Leonard lavished money on expanding the garden’s plant collections. As part of her creative and romantic nature, Maud aspired to be an artist and had several illustrations published in children’s books before her marriage. A skilled seamstress, she established the Nymans Needlework Guild giving employment to local women for supplementary income. Leonard and Maud’s daughter Anne was one of the beauties of her generation. As a young woman in the 1920s, Anne was part of the ‘Bright Young Things’ social set and was often pictured in society magazines and newspapers. Anne married firstly Ronald Armstrong –Jones and in 1930 gave birth to Antony, Lord Snowdon. Lord Snowdon married Princess Margaret and was one of the country’s leading photographers. Her

second marriage, following divorce from Ronald, was to Michael, 6th Earl of Rosse, and she moved to Birr Castle in Ireland for the duration of her marriage until Michael’s death in 1979. Anne herself was a gifted seamstress with a keen sense of heritage and preserving the past. She was also instrumental in setting up the Victorian Society in 1958. Anne’s brother Oliver was one of the most original stage and costume designers of his day with his work much in demand through the 1930s. Working on films such as ‘Caesar and Cleopatra', starring Vivien Leigh and on ballets such as ‘Romeo and Juliet’ for the Royal Opera House, he was much in demand both at work and play. NYMANS AND THE MESSEL FAMILY CONTINUED

Plans are currently afoot to open the ruins to visitors and you can read more about the project and how to get involved on the Nymans website. As you’d imagine a project of this scale costs a huge amount of money. As a charity the National Trust receives no statutory funding and relies on supporters’ generosity. You can help fund this and other projects at Nymans by buying a £1 raffle ticket when you visit, purchasing a book from the second- hand bookshop or making a donation. Visit Nymans: open every day (except Christmas Eve and Boxing Day). 11am until 5pm (4pm in winter). Please check website for admissions and opening arrangements.

exhibition features a varied selection of Oliver Messel’s portraiture. Widely revered for his ground-breaking theatre design, Oliver Messel was also a prolific portrait painter.

for health reasons where he turned his hand to architecture, designing a number of stunning beach houses for the rich and famous. An exhibition of his portraiture is currently on display in the gallery at Nymans until 3 June 2018. The house as you see it today is very much how it would have been when Anne lived at Nymans during the 1980s. In 1947 the house had fallen victim to a terrible fire which ravaged the house only 19 years after building had finished. With rationing and restrictions on building materials still in place after the end of the Second World War, it was simply impossible for the family to rebuild. What survived of the house was made safe for the family to use as a base when visiting the magnificent garden. Lord and Lady Rosse would visit here often and COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY Anne moved back permanently in 1979, living here until her death in 1992. Living

His subjects included famous friends, family and the local people he met while living in Barbados. Featuring portraits and sketches from Nymans’ own archive and items kindly loaned by members of the Messel family, the Rupert Maas Gallery and the Bristol Theatre Archive, the exhibition is a celebration of Oliver’s lesser known talent. Running until Sunday 3rd June, 11am - 3:30pm – last entry 30 mins before closing.

Exhibition: The Triumph of Hope: ‘I think that the garden may fitly be described as the triumph of hope...’

One hundred years since the publication of ‘A Garden Flora’ by Muriel Messel, Nymans summer exhibition will explore the lives of three women who influenced the garden’s design. Focussing on their creative legacy, and the social circles within which they moved, we show each of their unique contributions to the development of this well-known garden. Saturday 16th June – Sunday 28th October. 11am – 5pm (gallery closes 3:30pm).

STAR-GAZING In East Grinstead By Steve Pond Carrying on the East Grinstead tradition of star-gazing the night skies, resident, Steve Pond, runs the group 'Above East Grinstead' for those who want to know what's occurring in the skies above our town. Here he gives us the latest upcoming exciting celestial events to look out for.

Even now it is bright.

This coming summer will find the evening sky a treat for planet watchers, be it with the naked eye or a telescope. There will be four to observe as we go through the season…. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Very exciting also is a total lunar eclipse which will be observable in the early evening sky.

Jupiter will also, at this time, be bright in the evening sky as it will be at opposition, when it is opposite the sun in the sky and therefore at its brightest and closest to us for 2018. Its coloured bands will be observable through the telescope, as will some of its moon. A real treat if you’ve never seen a planet through a telescope before.

I’ll be holding events to observe the planets at various times through telescopes and also giving some background information as to what is being looked at. While it is not always possible to give exact dates ahead of time, relative to each planet, I'll be able to give details nearer the time of each event on my Facebook group Above East Grinstead (an open group but members are always welcome) and through various local social media outlets.

A big 'Wow!' on the 27th of July: In the evening, the moon will rise blood red due it being in total lunar eclipse and Mars is at its closest to earth since 2003. Either side of this time Mars will be bright red in the evening sky. Saturn at the end of June: During this time the ringed planet is closest the earth for this year and so it’s a great opportunity to look at its famous rings. This event will take place later in the evening due the time of the sun setting. Worth coming out for though.

Events to look out for….. Venus and Jupiter during the middle of May. At that time the second planet from the sun, Venus, will be incredibly bright in the North West evening sky. After the moon it will be the next brightest object in the sky. The accompanying illustration shows it in early March (the church is St Mary’s Windmill Lane) together with Mercury which is upper right to it. Venus is observable now in the evenings, COMMUNITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY look west above where the sun has set, as the sky darkens it will be the first object to appear.

International Observe the Moon Night 2018 is on the 20th October. The event details will be advertised at 'Above East Grinstead' (Facebook group) where I also give daily updates as to what is occurring in the sky above where we live. Happy observing and may clear skies come your way.

Dear Sariah... Introducing Sariah Jackson, trained midwife and mother of four and now our advice-giver extraordinaire.

Who needs 'experts' when you can get

Dear Sariah, I am a 42 year old mum of 3, the youngest is 11. I have been at home for 20 years now but feel it’s time I started looking outside of the children. I don’t want to have nothing when they’ve all left home. I didn’t do very well at school and wonder if it’s too late to go back? I have no idea where to start or what road to take. I’m interested in criminology but don’t know if I could use that interest or not. My husband says I just have to go for it and see where it takes me. Not sure I’m confident enough to be successful and I have no idea where to start. Can you help?

What an exciting new avenue this is for you. It’s a great idea to make some plans as our children get older and sometimes less dependent on us. It’s a great time to start looking into some new interests and activities. You suggest that you didn’t do so well at school but that has no bearing on how well you can do and what you can achieve in the future. It sounds like you have a supportive husband which is a great place to start. Often, our confidence in trying something new can be a little low but knowing that your family will give you support is great encouragement. The next step is finding out what your end goal is and what you need to do to achieve it. If you haven’t been in education for a while, an access to higher education course is definitely worth looking at. Locally, Crawley college has a great reputation for helping mature students begin the path to education. Take a look at their website to get some ideas that might suit what you’re looking for. If you need to resit subjects such as maths, English or science, then they offer courses in these subjects too. Normally the access courses are a year in length which gives you some time to define where you might like to study after that, be that going to university or perhaps open university. In essence, the world is your oyster. We are never too old to learn or begin a new chapter of our lives. It can be scary, stepping out of our comfort zone, but you’ve already started the beginnings of your new dream. All you have to do is follow it. Good luck.

East Grinstead's Queen Vic asks for local support

The current outdoor play area for the children’s ward, as well as the teenage corner which the hospital hopes to make more colourful and inviting, replete with new toys. Join Team QVH for the East Grinstead MudMonster Run on Sunday 3rd June

Our much-beloved local hospital, the Queen Vic, has just launched a new initiative to help improve their children’s waiting and play areas. They are asking for the local community to get involved.

Ever wanted to take part in a mud run? Well now’s your chance! The award winning 5k, 10k or 20k mud and obstacle race is offering a ten per cent discount on entry fee for anyone signing up and fundraising for the QVH Charity.

Going to hospital can be daunting for anyone, let alone children, so the idea is to create as positive and happy a space for them as possible, for children to enjoy when they visit. The hospital specialises in treating children who have experienced burns or need reconstructive surgery, including specialist hand, jaw and eye surgery, as well as treating a number of other injuries and illnesses.

You will be taken on a journey across muddy fields, up steep hills, through woods, washing off in river crossings, navigating through craters, fighting your way through deep muddy bogs, with up to 120+ obstacles and many more muddy surprises along the way. Every runner to cross the finish line gets a medal, free photos and a goody bag. Please contact Camilla Slattery on 01342 414 170 or email at Camilla.slattery@nhs.net.

Paediatric ward matron Julie Baker says, “The role of the hospital environment is really important, particularly as a means of distraction for children. We want the hospital to be somewhere they’re not frightened to go to. With the support of QVH Charity we want to make sure children get a positive first impression which will set the tone for their interaction with us. Improving these areas will make a huge difference.”

There are lots of other ways people could get involved such as hosting a tea party, bake sale, craft day, sports challenge, etc. There are plenty of ideas on www.supportqvh.org. If you would like to support this fundraising initiative please send your donations to QVH Charity, Queen Victoria Hospital, Holtye Road, East Grinstead, RH19 3DZ.

ToCOMMUNITY help raise these funds, the Queen Vic is BUSINESS DIRECTORY one of the partnership charities for the local Mudmonster run: Living

LOCAL NEWS STORIES Local Fine Artist Sheri Gee undertook an international challenge to paint 30 paintings in 30 days - the subject? seed packets. Posting the paintings daily, friends and family began to donate packets - one in particular was a variety of Sweat Pea named after local townswoman Myfanwy Townsend, in aid of the Melanoma Fund set up locally in her memory. To see the full thirty paintings, visit www.sherigee.com. Sheri is a member of EG art group Example, who staged the successful 'Townscape' exhibitions in the town in 2014 and 2016. Example will be exhibiting 'on tour' at the Oxmarket Gallery in Chichester, 3rd - 15th July. For more information visit www.exampleart.co.uk.

WHAT WOULD YOU

BRING BACK TO EG?

A fabulous question was posed on the 'Memories of East Grinstead' Facebook group which was: If you could bring back just one thing to East Grinstead, what would it be?

Chicken, Woolworths, the youth club, railways to Crawley Down & Tunbridge Wells, Grays, the Wimpy, the cinema (as it was), Fry's sausages, Tuzzy Muzzy, The push button 'You are here' outside the old cinema, the Saturday market.

There was many many replies - 480 comments and counting when we last checked!

We want to hear from you! Which one thing would you bring back to EG if you could?

The most popular answer by all acouunts was the Brooklands Outdoor Pool. Other popular answers included:

Charity Starts at Home A much loved locally born and bred charity, the Melanoma Fund (formerly the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund) is launching a new campaign this month: Don’t be Ridiculous...Watch Your Back! Aimed at gardeners.

broken records. We all know the facts, but many, especially men, lack a regular skin care habit and dislike applying sunscreen, so we have decided to give it to them straight: Don’t be ridiculous; remember sun protection when out in the garden this summer.” Skin cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK and melanoma is the most dangerous type. It is the fastest growing cancer in men and the second fastest in women, with men 70% more likely to develop the disease, typically on their backs and in areas that are hard to spot, making the warning signs easier to miss.

From its inception nearly 20 years ago, as a tiny, family-run charity, set up by all round fundraiser, gardener, community person extraordinaire Harry Townsend in memory of his wife Myfanwy, it has grown its reach across the South East to national level. With the backing of celebrity gardeners this new national sun protection campaign aimed, in particular, at gardeners will use humour to fight melanoma, with four of the biggest names in gardening agreeing to look ‘ridiculous’ to help punch the message home: David Domoney, Adam Frost, Mark Lane and David Stevens will appear in the Watch Your Back! campaign like you’ve never seen them before, to urge people to think twice about their sun protection habits in the garden.

A national competition is also being launched to help raise funds and awareness of melanoma open to all ages. The aim is to grow the tallest or biggest sunflower in the UK with prizes supplied by Landmann BBQ’s and Altruist sunscreen. Over 150 garden centres

DON’T BE

The campaign will feature in over 220 garden centres from May, warning that ignoring sun protection is simply ‘ridiculous’, specifically targeting men over 50 who are the least likely to cover up and so are more likely be at risk of the effects of excessive sun exposure.

WHEN OUT IN THE GARDEN David Stevens Garden Designer, Author & Broadcaster

Campaign ambassador Alan Titchmarsh says; “This approach may appear light-hearted, but the message is serious. Sunburn can not only triple the risk of melanoma, it looks terrible, so look after your skin, whatever your age.”

Wendy said: “We walked in memory of my husband Ken who St Catherine’s cared for. The best part was the camaraderie and the volunteer marshals were amazing, they kept us going. There’s a fantastic atmosphere and the night feels really special. Walking together as a family and having my girls take part for their Daddy was amazing.
