Testimonial: “It is with pleasure that I recommend Paul and Allzones Roofing Services. We encountered a problem at our residence over the last winter during the large snowfall with an ingress of water in two dormer window areas. We requested quotes from two well known roofing companies and were told we require a completely new roof at an exorbitant sum of money. Thank goodness we had someone refer us to Paul. He identified the problem as being poorly fitted felt and loose tiles which were pushed up by the snowfall & freezing weather. He and his men attended immediately and corrected the situation at a fraction of the cost quoted by the previous two companies It is truly wonderful to meet a tradesman who is not only extremely honest but very proud of the work he performs. I am quite confident that any who employs this company will be very pleased with the final result.” Yours truly, Richard Reuss Independent Business Consultant Forest Row

Dear Residents,
Whats inside this month
Welcome to the November issue. This month we have an exciting feature about a group of up and coming, locally based Trampolinists who are shortly set to represent Great Britain on the world stage in Portugal and Denmark. It seems a real trampoline hub is being created. We’re also pleased to be able to bring you another fashion article from Tessa Sturdy of Second Glance in preparation for the winter holiday season.

MILLS
Local History Notes by Dorothy Hatswell of the East Grinstead Museum Before the advent of the steam engine there were three main sources of power. Muscle power, either human or animal, was probably the earliest. Then the natural sources of energy, those which today we would call renewables, were increasingly used, those of wind and water and to a much lesser extent, the tide. There is only one remaining tide mill in England, at Woodbridge. East Grinstead, as I mentioned in a recent article, did not have any large rivers and most water mills were supplied by damming a small stream and forming a lake. The water supply could then be regulated. Most of the iron working sites had their hammers and bellows powered in this way. However the grinding of corn and wheat into flour was mainly done by windmills. The reason for the lack of rivers is due to the relatively high ground in the district and this of course is ideal for harnessing the wind. Windmills fall into three categories; post mills, smock and tower mills. The sails, which are usually called sweeps in Sussex, have to be tuned into the wind. In post mills the whole mill revolves, whereas only the cap turns in the other types. Smock mills are a later and lighter development of tower mills which have their bases built of brick or stone. The speed of the wind is
Windmill on East Grinstead Common before 1882. The miller is leaning from a window. important. A “fresh breeze, estimated at about 10mph, is too little to turn the sweeps. The opposite is also unworkable above 50mph the strength of the wind will wreck the machinery. The stones used to actually grind the grain are one of the most expensive parts of the mill and millers look after them very carefully re- surfacing them as necessary. There are only two types of stones used, the peak stones from Derbyshire and the burr stones from France.
living Visit: w w w.egliving.co.uk
Both are not only expensive but transporting them from a distance is also costly. In East Grinstead the windmill on the common was about a mile north of the town is the best known one in the area. It was a post mill. The road where it once stood reminds us of this. The foundations were found in the house called Millfield, but this too has succumbed to the developers’ wrecking ball and a small close of houses occupies the site, also thankfully, called Millfield. This

mill has been called, variously over the centuries, North End Mill and Old Black Mill. The original was built in 1564 but burnt down in 1757. It appears to have been rebuilt ten years later but was not demolished until the very early C20th. Within the town a windmill stood on the south side of the High Street near to the “George”. Its probable site is where Portland
Road bends to the West. Ashurst Wood also has its Windmill Road, named for the smock mill which was in operation until 1882. Cuttons Hill was also a smock mill and the mill on Pook Hill, now called Blackberry Hill, although only built in 1823 was gone by 1841.To the south west of East Grinstead there was a
smock mill on Selsfield Common. It was octagonal and painted white which made it visible for some distance. It appears on the horizon in a view from Turners Hill in 1891. Crawley Down also had its own windmill. It was in the field behind the cottage in which I live. It appears in the Rate Books for the years between 1780, the earliest Rate Book, available, and 1792. It does not appear in 1793. There seems no explanation for its early demise. Local legend has it that it was dismantled by the gypsies and the materials spirited away in just one night. Copthorne Common’s mill was “shivered to pieces in a storm” in 1795 and in the Great Storm of November many mills were damaged. Their locations in exposed sites to take advantage of the prevailing wind also meant they were vulnerable when the weather was particularly violent. The decline of windmills from the middle of the C19th can be partly explained by the rise in the popularity of steam power and the rapid expansion of the railways which meant that flour did not have to be produced locally but could take place elsewhere when the economy of scale made products cheaper than could be produced by a small mill. Those that remain whether, as an interesting addition to the landscape, or as an insight into our industrial past, are always a welcome sight on a journey through the English countryside. I am indebted to Roy Henderson from whose e-book came much of this information. He is currently revising it.

We have an excellent record in preparing students to take First Certificate in English, Cambridge Advanced English and IELTS examinations. Here are some comments from students. ‘I like the college because the teachers are very patient, and also because it’s very flexible with the times for the lessons.’
Do you have an au pair who is looking for English classes where he or she can make friends as well as improve their English? Our College is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and very effective teaching in small groups where each student gets personal attention and makes rapid progress. All levels of English are taught from beginner to advanced. Staff at care homes, restaurants, etc. are also very welcome. Lessons can be arranged to help staff with
“The classes are perfect to learn English and to improve your level. Also you have different levels and in each of them you learn grammar, vocabulary, etc. The teachers have a lot of interest. They are very good!” “I really enjoyed the whole course. The teacher was very friendly, creating a good atmosphere. I liked the smaller class size and the course I was attending was also good value for money. No need to mention I made lots of friends from different countries.” A free assessment and introductory lesson help to find the best classes for each individual student. For more information call 01342 315299 or email info@gelc.org.uk.
What does the Effective Education Centre offer parents and students? Excellent tutoring with highly experienced tutors! Our criteria for our tutors are 1) do they get results? and 2) do they raise the student’s confidence so learning can be enjoyable? The comment we hear most often from parents is ‘my child’s confidence has improved’ and this is the result of the methods we use and the patience and friendliness of the tutors. Here is one example of this: ‘L. had an end of year English assessment test last week and his spelling age has improved by four years and six months over the last school year alone, and he is now back on track and where he should be at his age (just turned 13). L has always struggled with English, especially with spelling as he is dyslexic, but with his hard work and the guidance from his tutors at the Effective Education Centre he has improved so much that he will no longer require extra English lessons at school next year when he moves up to Year 9, which is a fantastic achievement. Not only has it helped his spelling and English studies in general, it has helped to boost his self-esteem and confidence which is so important and I don’t think that would have been the case had we not taken the decision to get him extra help.’
10
Similar results can be achieved in Maths, the Sciences, languages, and other school subjects for students of all ages from 5 to 18. Tutoring for 11+ and Common Entrance examinations (including tuition in Latin) is also available. The first step is a free assessment where you can see for yourself whether help is needed and discuss options. Contact us on 01342 317417 or email services@effectiveeducation.net.

Do your passwords drive you crazy? Passwords are the modern scourge. Each website that offers you an account demands a password toll. As your mountain of passwords grows, you need to make a choice about how to handle this painful necessity. Yet imagine for a moment no longer struggling with new strong passwords, instead having them all at your fingertips on every device without giving them to the iCloud or some other hackable service. This solution is here today for free with no digital technology required. The answer lies in sandwiches. Making strong, different and easily remembered passwords is as simple as making a sandwich with the same bread but different fillings. The filling needs to be something memorable for you about the site. For example, my slices of bread could be Jack2 and 3Jill. For ebay my password could be Jack2ebay3Jill. Similarly, paypal could be Jack2paypal3Jill. You can make both the slices and filling more complicated and you will still find them easy to remember. Forgotten a password? Knowing the slices, just ask yourself what you would choose for the site and you will soon have your password back.
There are three points to using this simple system. Firstly, you need to type your passwords so that you remember the ‘slices’. Secondly, some websites set short limits on password length which is curious since this is a significant factor in the strength of your password. If your password is 16 characters you should be fine. Finally, if you want maximum security I suggest the following. There are three sorts of website: no security, medium security and high security. For those sites whose security is irrelevant to you, give them your standard ‘junk’ password, your ‘junk’ email address and no personal information. Then consider having separate password ‘sandwiches’ for medium and high security websites. For example, shopping is typically medium security, banking and tax returns are high security. This maximises your security for websites that matter to you while still making your life easy. Enjoy making your sandwiches! By Roger Lyons of RL Computer Solutions, see ad opposite.

Dressing for the Winter Season Do you dread being invited out during the winter months? As these colder, darker autumn days lead us towards Christmas, it’s hard to get excited about the way we look, but we must still make the effort when that special invitation arrives. These days, with the advent of more weddings and celebrations taking place during the winter months, there are a few practical things to consider when finding the right thing to wear. Winter weddings often take place in hotels or venues where the whole ceremony takes place indoors. This removes the need for special outer clothing for the day – one problem less to worry about. If you are local, you could even sneak in early and deposit your hooded dog walking coat in the cloakroom with your boots – nobody need know as they won’t recognise you! Then have a quick rearrange of your ‘hood’ hair and emerge, swanlike, into the reception area with your smart dress and heels, looking like you’ve just been chauffeur driven there! If you live a long way away and are staying at the venue, don’t travel in your outfit - and choose one that will travel well in a suitcase – although a quick hang of your clothes in a steamy bathroom will usually sort out any creases. And make a checklist!! Nothing worse than being miles from home and missing a pair of shoes or tights! Remember it is likely that the heating will be warm enough for you not to need anything with a heavy fabric, so you may not
14
even need a jacket. Hats can look a bit over the top if you are indoors for the whole ceremony, so if it’s something that worries you, consider a fascinator instead or maybe nothing on your head. You must be comfortable – it’s a long day! Often it is quite acceptable to wear more of a ‘cocktail’ look if the time of the wedding is later in the day and continues into the evening.
Church wedding? Is it time for a new winter coat? Why not think about buying a bright colour for a change? Want to use your old favourite dark coloured coat? Then jazz it up a bit, with a bright scarf – or maybe a fur hat or felt trilby that you can use afterwards. What if it rains? There are a lot of inexpensive pretty umbrellas out there! Office party? Tricky one if you prefer to keep the ‘real you’ private. Dress in an understated way (but still stylish of course!), so there is nothing controversial to discuss over coffee the next morning! If you are comfortable in trousers, then wear them. There are plenty of lovely tunics and tops out there that are easy to wear and hide a multitude of sins! Think about jumpsuits – a very flattering alternative. But if you want to dress up a bit, then do it – your own confidence will define what you are comfortable in. And remember this year, there are plenty of ways to add a bit of winter sparkle – gold and silver metallic shoes, handbags, jewellery – there’s even lurex in a lot of the fabrics, so get out there and shine! Hints & Tips brought to you by Tessa Sturdy of Private Collection& Second Glance. See ad on the right.

Representing Great Britain We recently got in touch with Gail Andrews, Forest Row resident, who is one of the coaches of a handful of exciting, up and coming talent of the trampoline world which includes her daughter Niamh. With their stars in the ascendance, the girls are working hard to gear up for the December World Championships in Denmark. Here is a Q&A with Gail: How did you get into the coaching trampolining? I used to compete in Trampoline when I was young so when I had kids I wanted them to trampoline but was frustrated by local classes I took them to. Luckily, I found a competitive club and went on a coaching course. This club is where I met Stella Jackson who is now head coach of Sky High Trampoline & DMT Club - Double Mini Trampoline (DMT) is a new discipline of trampoline gymnastics that has recently made its way to the UK, it is a combination of athletics, trampolining and gymnastics. Both of us wanted an improved training facility and had a vision of what could be achieved if we found the right premises for a dedicated trampoline centre, and when we finally did find it six years ago, Fun Abounds Trampoline Centre in Uckfield was born. What are the results of some of the top girls that you train? Niamh Andrews from Forest Row is currently British Synchronised Champion 2015 (15-16 age group) with her partner Louise Brownsey from Hurst Green. 16
Erifilly Heonos, Lily Robson, Niamh Andrews, Louise Brownsey Niamh is also ranked 4th as an individual in the country and is currently NDP 8 DMT Champion 2015. Lily Robson from Barcombe was a bronze medallist at the British Championships 2015 (11-12 age group). Erifilly Heonos from Lewes is currently British Champion in Double Mini Trampoline (age 13-14) and ranked 5th in Britain in trampoline (last year she was also British Champion in trampoline). Louise was a bronze medallist at the British Championships (15-16 age group). What is the plan with the international World Cup in Portugal? Due to their outstanding results

at the British Championships, all four of the gymnasts have been selected to compete in Portugal in a World Cup competition taking place from 29th October - 1st November (editor: the results will of course now be known!). Following the British, there was a trial to be selected for the World Age Group Championships. This is the big one in the competition calendar, determining world rankings. It is also a selection event for our senior gymnasts for Olympic places in Rio 2016. Only Niamh and Lily hit the scores required to be selected for this event from our club and only 3 gymnasts could be taken from each age group in the country. As a club we are doing pretty amazingly! World Championships are in Denmark 2nd- 6th December. It turns out that is going to cost nearer 3000GBP to attend both these competitions as the GB kit is nearly 450GBP alone, so some sponsorship to raise funds for this trip has begun. What has the local reaction been so far to your daughter, Niamh’s championship campaign? The local community has been really fantastic in their support. Last month Niamh put a post on the Forest Row Community Facebook group and from this she will receive a significant amount from Peter Miles, a former athlete in the area who understands the costs of supporting top level sport, he runs Broadstone Security. She is also receiving a generous donation from Nick Cooling at the Gallipot Inn, plus a donation from the Mid Sussex Martial Arts Centre who have had a hand in producing the Olympian Karina Bryant. Additionally all the girls are going to be on BBC News South East at some point soon! If you are interested in supporting any of the girls in their trampoline goals for Great Britain, please email: gailsandrews1@icloud.com.

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR AN OLD LANDMARK By Phillip Mumford, Managing Director, Cowan Architects Changes to an office or business premises can be as simple as a lick of paint and reorganising the desks or a dramatic return to the drawing board. Whatever the need, however, there is likely to be an impact on the business from the moment the decision is taken. At Cowan Architects, we know this from first-hand experience having recently completed a phased restoration of an East Grinstead Landmark, Old Stone House at the top of the High Street, which we bought last year to extend into from our own offices behind. Just as with anyone else considering a change in office space, we had to decide what was best for us as a business, giving careful consideration beforehand to the nature of our business, its pace of change, current and future work practices, and advances in technology and materials. When Old Stone Link came up for sale, it made sense for our practice to buy it as the limitations in our current office space has restricted our ability to expand. But as a neglected, Grade II listed building, requiring an extensive programme of renovation, we had to be sure that it would be worth the investment to restore it to its former glory. The task of bringing the building up to standard was a hefty project as there had been little maintenance done for some 50 years. The Practice worked closely with the Conservation Officer and 22
renovation specialists using conservation grade materials to restore the stonework, timber facade and roof outside while inside installing a new heating system and rewiring the entire building to bring it up to modern standards. Most importantly, trying to achieve the space planning needs within the listed building was always going to tricky but we have been delighted with the result. For others, finding an architect that can ask you the right questions to really understand your business drivers is essential in future-proofing the work you have done and to maximise the investment return. Any architect advising a business on its commercial space requirements, really needs to understand both your current and longer term business needs and how you operate. Managing realistic expectations against these needs, in terms of programme and cost, is a balance. They need to ensure the least possible disruption to the business while allowing the building works to revolve around it. Attention to detail, phase

planning and the integration of services provision or upgrade is key. In our case, considerations on the planning process were easily managed as it’s a speciality of Cowan Architects, but for others, negotiating the issue of what’s permitted and what’s not can be a minefield. And if you’re renovating, you may also need an in-depth knowledge of the conservation rules likely involving advice from an expert. Happily, our restoration project ended in good time and on budget, so we were able to enjoy the re-opening of a Landmark building made famous by the ‘infamous’ Hanging Judge Jeffries when it was the circuit judges’ lodgings. The Town Mayor, Cllr Dick Sweatman and nearly 100 guests, colleagues and local business partners joined us to admire once again the building’s original features such as a 16th century staircase, windows, fireplaces and beautiful oak panelling which are now restored as part of the building’s rich heritage.

Quick chicken couscous Couscous is so quick and simple to prepare, and it goes well with lots of different flavours too. Serves: 4 adults. Preparation time: 20 mins. Cooking time: 0 mins
Ingredients: 200g couscous 450ml vegetable or chicken stock 250g skinless, boneless roast chicken breasts torn into pieces 100g sweetcorn 2 tomatoes chopped ¼ cucumber chopped 1 tbsp lemon (just a squeeze will do)
What to do: 1. Put the couscous into a large mixing bowl and cover with the hot stock. Leave for 10-15 minutes to swell and cool, then stir with a fork to fluff up the grains. 2. Add the chicken, sweetcorn, tomatoes and cucumber. Season with a squeeze of lemon juice and some ground black pepper. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Tip 1: Make fruity chicken couscous by replacing the sweetcorn, tomatoes and cucumber with chopped apple, seedless grapes and raisins or chopped readyto-eat dried apricots. Tip 2: Another time, try using bulgar wheat instead of couscous. Just prepare it in the same way.
1 pinch ground black pepper
Breakfast in Fair Style The Fairtrade EG and Fairtrade Lingfield and Dormansland groups celebrated their 10th birthday over the Summer with 65 guests and friends on a lovely sunny afternoon. Councillors old and new attended and Fairtrade wine, scones, strawberries and cream, and a special birthday cake made with Fairtrade ingredients were served and enjoyed. Fairtrade is of course about local people supporting global communities and ensuring that farmers and producers in developing countries receive a fair wage for producing a wide variety of goods which we can buy in local shops and supermarkets. Looking forward to next year, our local Fairtrade group will be building on the last 10 years of promoting Fairtrade in the local community by organising a number of events in Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 which runs from 29th February - 13th March. They would like to hear from any community groups that would like to take part - the group can provide speakers, leaflets, Fairtrade stalls and help with events. The focus this year is on food security; it’s a sad irony that millions of farmers and workers in the developing world who are feeding the world are going hungry. Buying and using Fairtrade goods means a basic human need can be fulfilled, to put enough food on the table for the people the farmers care about most (their families) all

year round. So the focus for Fairtrade groups will be on encouraging Big Fairtrade Breakfasts. Martin Luther King said in his Christmas sermon on peace in 1967: “Before you finish eating Breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on half the world.” Would you like to have a Fairtrade breakfast event using Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, orange, bananas, cereals, chocolate spread, honey, peanut butter, jam? With St Andrews day occurring on the 30th November, we take a look at
A Brief History of St Andrew St Andrew, whose name means strong, was a hardy Galilean fisherman who brought the first foreigners to meet Jesus. He once shamed a large crowd of people into sharing their food with the people beside them and he also had good social skills; he is believed to have later preached around the shores of the Black Sea. As Scotland’s Patron and brother of St Peter (founder of the Catholic Church), Saint Andrew seems to have given the country several advantages, for instance, the Scots were able to appeal to the Pope in 1320 for protection against the English kings. Traditionally, Scots also claimed that they were descended from the Scythians who lived on the shores of the Black Sea in what is now Romania and Bulgaria and were converted by St Andrew before making their way to more northerly shores. Devotion to St Andrew had spread from as far apart as Constantinople in modern Turkey, to St Andrews in Fife. And as Scotland slowly became a nation it needed a national symbol to rally round and motivate the country. St Andrew was the choice of the early Picts and Scots. They modelled themselves on him
and on one of his supporters, the Roman Emperor Constantine, whose statue can be seen today in York where he visited his father, a Roman general, who was ironically trying to force the Picts to go back north. Constantine was, of course, the first Roman Emperor to adopt Christianity and went on to make it the official religion of the Roman Empire. Around 500 years later, King Angus of the Picts, was facing a larger army of Saxons at Athelstaneford in what is now East Lothian in Scotland. He was allegedly overwhelmed by a blinding light the night before the battle and, during the night, had a dream in which he received a message that he would see a cross in the sky and would conquer his enemies in its name. The following morning King Angus looked into the rising sun and saw the Saltire Cross in its blinding light. This filled him and his men with great confidence and they were victorious. From that time St Andrew and his Saltire Cross were adopted as the national symbols for an emerging Scotland. To any Scots living East Grinstead area, we wish you a very happy St Andrews day.

Thirty Years in Wilderness Wood In 1980 Chris and Anne Yarrow bought an unloved woodland, Wilderness Wood in Hadlow Down (just south of the Ashdown Forest), and created a successful forestry enterprise and a popular place to visit for schools & families. In his newly released book about the wood, Chris Yarrow, tells the story of how, against the odds, he and his wife succeeded in making a living from just 63 acres of Sussex woodland, without compromising their darkestgreen credentials. Using their professional backgrounds in forestry, countryside recreation and ecology, they transformed Wilderness Wood into a productive and award-winning example of multi-purpose forestry. Here is a short Q&A with Chris, followed by a fascinating extract from his book about the night of the great storm of ‘87: What inspired you to write this book? My wife Anne and I realised that what we did at Wilderness Wood would soon fade in people’s memories, and we wanted to record the story of how an ordinary family was able to live the dream of a self-sufficient rural life. We had bought the wood after searching for a place that would match our dream: a woodland which could produce all sorts of other benefits in addition to timber production. It was to be a place we could live in and be large enough for visitors to feel they had been 30
somewhere, whether for a picnic, a walk, or simply to enjoy outstanding natural scenery. Our wood was unique in that the school visits, sales of timber, firewood, and furniture and other products, supported a small wood in an area where over half of woodlands are neglected because they are uneconomic. Our success was recognised by

winning the Duke of Cornwall’s Award for Forestry and Conservation, as well as a number of other prestigous prizes. What was the challenging part of the whole process? There were lots of challenges. Firstly, I had done very little creative writing: a successful book has to be an interesting

read, and I had been accustomed to writing factual, (and usually boring!) reports. Anne is a much better writer, but she was very busy as a school governor and deputy churchwarden. Her mammoth task was to whip my rambling account into some order. Then there was the problem of deciding how to pitch the content to the inevitably wide range of reader, we decided it must appeal to the sort of person who had visited the wood; and there must have been over a million of them. It also had to cover the reasons why so many woods are neglected, and how we were running Wilderness Wood in a way that could be a model for other small woods. Factually, the long-term challenge was running such a diverse business, as neither of us had any appropriate experience whatsoever. From training teenagers, through insects eating our Christmas trees, to being sweet to all-comers at the end of a busy week all tested our skills and enthusiasm to the limit while we attempted to live a normal family life with our two daughters! Readers will get an unexpurgated account of the joys and tribulations over those three decades to retirement. What reception have you had so far? The reception from the people who have bought
the book has been very good, and a number have gone on to order copies for Christmas presents. Local booksellers, both chain and independent, are stocking it. We have had orders from as far away as Scotland, Switzerland and British Columbia, so we could say it is widely read! What is the best part about living in the Ashdown Forest area? Ashdown Forest is owned by us, the people, and was acquired by the County Council as open space for all to enjoy. In an increasingly crowded part of the country, access to our countryside enhances our lives immeasurably. Anne and I walk daily on the dense network of footpaths that thread through our immediate neighbourhood, but we visit the forest whenever we want wide open vistas. We are fortunate that the High Weald has an amazing topography, with views to North and South Downs, as well as the very special small scale pattern of fields and copses which have survived because our land is inherently poor for farming. It is the total opposite of the fens (the flat lands of East Anglia), for example, we’ d go mad if we had to live there - or in a big industrial city.
Extract:
THE GREAT STORM Anne had been tossing and turning with a feverish cold, listening with increasing alarm to the creaks and groans of our timber-framed house. Nearby trees screamed as the wind tore up the valley; gates crashed against their posts, and the night sky lit up as if by lightning as power cables of the National Grid shorted four miles to the south. It was the night of Thursday 16th October 1987, a date indelibly etched on the mind of every landowner and forester in south-east England. That night, between one and five am, a near-hurricane-force wind swept in off the Channel, with the eye of the storm making landfall near Worthing. Lifting garden sheds into the air, turning over caravans, taking roofs off houses, and felling countless trees, the storm headed north-eastwards across Sussex and Kent. Crossing the Thames Estuary, it swept unimpeded across the flat East Anglian landscape, slipping once more onto salt water, whence it had gained its power. The impact of the Great Storm was likened to the effects of atomic war. Communications were severed, power in all forms ceased, and citizens had to fall back on their own resources, a novel experience for many. You might think that a family living by the tenets of self-sufficiency would take it in its stride.

Perhaps we did, and the worst storm in 300 years had surprisingly little impact on our long-term direction for the wood. Unable to stand it any longer, Anne woke her snoring husband with an elbow in the ribs and “The sheep are out. They’re in the garden.” I stumbled downstairs in the darkness. Flashes in the sky lit up the silver trunks of the six-metre-high birches in the orchard, their tops bent horizontal, and leaves and small branches whistled by. But the overarching impression was of warmth. Barefoot, with only a dressing gown for cover, it felt like standing by the downheater of a large store. We later learned that the temperature had risen seven degrees centigrade in one hour, a common feature of the sort of tropical storm we were experiencing. The three sheep must have been relieved to see me, as they willingly trotted back to the familiarity of the orchard, forsaking the forbidden delights of the vegetable garden. The gate was still on its wire hinges, and only needed another piece of baler twine to keep the woollies in, so with some relief I returned to a fretting wife upstairs. By three am, the house began to voice new sounds. With mains power gone, torchlight investigation revealed that the east wall of the house, a few feet from our bed-head, was flexing away by as much as a centimetre as each gust passed. We shall never know how much more wind it would have taken to suck away the whole east side of the house, but I volubly cursed the carpenter for leaving out the wall ties which should have reinforced this point. We checked the children’s rooms, found them fast asleep, returned to bed and exhaustedly joined them in sleep ourselves, as the storm subsided into a gale. We awoke at 7.20 with the ‘phone in the office ringing insistently. Bleary-eyed, I heard Dave, our trainee woodsman, stating that there were trees blown down across the road, and he wouldn’t be in on time. I raised my eyes to the window and saw light. This was not the normal early morning glimmer descending down the gap between house and trees, but bright light shining unimpeded from the west, where a vista of clear sky smiled across a sea of fallen pines and beech. “Hell, so have we. See if you can get in.” The events of the night came flooding back. No, it hadn’t been a cheese-induced nightmare. On all sides, our world had changed. Broadleaved trees, yesterday still in full leaf, were now bare. Where once there were dense crowns, now broken limbs pointed to the sky across ragged gaps. The beech and Scots pine plantation that we had recently so carefully thinned was now a mass of leaning trunks, like dominos waiting for the signal to topple. Everywhere the ground lay hidden beneath a shambles of snapped limbs, fallen trunks and foliage. To the south, through salt-stained windows, the distant view to the Downs had suddenly expanded. Our coppice and pines had fallen in groups, revealing vistas of the Blackboys ridge two miles away. It, too, had a new jagged profile, where yesterday woods and lines of trees had stood, and beyond it on the skyline we could now see Wilmington Hill, of Long Man fame. A bright sun shone from an almost clear sky, as if to say “Have a lovely day”. Turning on the battery radio, we began to learn how widespread and devastating the “hurricane” had been. All schools in the county were closed. Travel was impossible, with railway lines and roads blocked by fallen trees. There was no electricity across the South-east. Perhaps a premonition had induced me to lay the telephone cable in a trench from the road to the house, and so we still had contact with the outside world. We ‘phoned to reassure both sets of grandparents. My parents in Lewes, 14 miles upwind, had lost a few slates from the roof and were more concerned for their elderly neighbours than for us or themselves. Anne’s parents, who had a London pied-à-terre by Tower Bridge, wondered why on earth we were calling them at eight am to tell them we were all right. “Why shouldn’t you be?” They were quite unaware of the storm that had passed by their treeless enclave of dockland redevelopment in the preceding hours.
